szehoong April 17th, 2004, 04:09 PM New site needed for detainees in Pudu Jail
By DALILAH IBRAHIM
DRUG addicts arrested in Kuala Lumpur will be placed in a new detention centre next year when Pudu Jail is returned to the property owner, Federal Territory Minister Tan Sri Isa Abdul Samad said.
Isa said, however, the police and City Hall were still discussing the location of the new detention centre. Pudu Jail can hold between 700 and 800 detainees, who currently comprise mostly drug addicts and illegal immigrants.
“The police will continue to take action against drug addicts and all the parties involved will be looking for both short-term and long-term solutions to this problem,” said Isa at a press conference after a briefing by city police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mustafa Abdullah at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters on Thursday.
Also present were deputy minister Datuk Zulhasnan Rafique and Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Mohmad Shaid Mohd Taufek.
UDA Holdings is the property owner of Pudu Jail, which was turned into a detention centre for addicts rounded up during the 10th Organisation of Islamic Conference Summit in October last year.
The prison was closed down in November 1996 and was briefly turned into a tourist attraction.
Isa said the police and City Hall would continue to work hand-in-hand to reduce crime in the city and find ways to make the surrounding areas safer.
“We plan to employ more police and City Hall is looking into the possibility of connecting one building to another so that people could walk from one place to another in a more controlled environment,” he said.
Isa also said the proposal to ban motorcycles in the city had to be discussed thoroughly as it would cause many problems for city dwellers who depended a lot on motorcycles.
“As it is, there are now fewer illegal races in the city,” he said, referring to the reason the proposal was made in the first place.

You know what....I was thinking of applying for an ASP position and every single one of my friend give me this weird look. Wonder why. I don't think there is anything wrong to work in a police department though....

Any recollection on how that proposal would be. Any picture?
tomkat April 20th, 2004, 04:42 AM More malls? What else are in the proposal?
This site has so much potential as it is close to monorail and star stations. Hopefully the development includes an intergrated covered walkway to these stations.

Hobodog December 25th, 2004, 06:22 PM Ok...from 10000miles away...I say tear it down...double the size of BTS with a building that spans the road between the two properties and has an multi-lane avenue that goes through it...think big...then again this isn't the UAE...so I guess money might actually matter.

haze May 3rd, 2006, 03:46 PM source from : KL structure plan 2020
Development around transit stations
809. To help reduce vehicular traffic within the City Centre, office and commercial employment clusters at the outer edges of the City Centre adjacent to rail station transit nodes at the KLCC, Kampong Bharu, Chow Kit and Titiwangsa shall be created. Development shall include public transport interchanges and cultural and community
facilities.
810. The Stadium Merdeka represents the historical proclaimation of Malaysia’s Independence. However the areas in its vicinity can be developed for residential and commercial purposes in which its design concept should take sympathetic consideration of the historical values.
811. The site of the former Pudu Jail shall be developed as a high density and high quality residential development incorporating service apartments. Part of the site which is closely linked to the Hang Tuah LRT and the PRT stations shall be developed as a neighbourhood park.
812. Some of the older public housing areas now occupying valuable inner city land are under pressure for redevelopment. A comprehensive development plan for San Peng and Loke Yew Flats shall be implemented to create an integrated high technology mixed development catering for the needs of the New Economy and incorporating medium density, high and medium cost housing. The development shall be closely integrated with the Hang Tuah and Pudu LRT stations and incorporating open space connections between the cemetery to the south and the new neighbourhood park at the former Pudu Jail site. The site is on the prominent axis from the south of the City and the redevelopment shall be a significant landmark building to complement the Petronas Twin Towers and KL Tower.
813. The Tuanku Abdul Rahman flats at Jalan Tun Razak, another area of dilapidated public housing which extends to cover an area to the north of the City Centre, shall be developed to create a self-contained comprehensive mixed development closely integrated with the Titiwangsa LRT and PRT stations.
airspeeder May 3rd, 2006, 08:28 PM maybe they can renovate it into a shopping mall.. hehe
with lrt & monorail stations next to it.. accessibility wont be a problem..
we can call it 'the Cell'.. sound futuristic, isn't it?
Lastresorter May 3rd, 2006, 11:12 PM ^^ I think shopping mall is not a good idea yet as there are many existing competitors nearby. Building medium to high end residential area is a good idea as it will boost the retail sector in Bkt Bintang. Maybe build a mall in the very last phase. A park is a good idea!
The Cell sounds cool!! But then again, the residents may not be so willing to tell others "hey I live in The Cell!" :D
Manila-X May 4th, 2006, 03:16 PM Didn't Pudu had the longest mural painted by a single inmate?
andyf May 4th, 2006, 09:40 PM Is there anything special about the piece of green land between Pudu Jail and Hang Tuah LRT, it seems like no one ventures onto it?
Lastresorter May 4th, 2006, 09:48 PM Didn't Pudu had the longest mural painted by a single inmate?
