Latest pic of a Penang mansion..last time it was painted yellow..now white much better :)

http://www.tomcockrem.com/library/asia/malaysia/peninsularmalaysia/penang/images/mansion%20in%20northam%20road.jpg

Sorry I came to this thread so late but on my last trip to Penang, this mansion was in excellent shape (at least exterior). The back even had a gate to the sea, and there is a statue of the owner in the back verandah. I stayed opposite this mansion and had a chance to wander in. The thing I liked most was the porch is actually covered with glass tiles. Beautiful.

Pity about Woodneuk, pity about Bok House. Now...macam mana?

I'm trying to write a letter or something. I fear Woodneuk might crumble anytime, now a haunt for photographers and illegal people.

Was ravaged by fire in July last year. Arson.

Apparently, Dato Jaffar's Residence (Istana Bukit Senyum) in JB was based on Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire, England.

It is quite a prominent mansion, seen from many angles in JB.

Terengganu historic mansion being restored
Friday August 7, 2009

A HISTORICAL mansion in Kuala Terengganu which houses the Malaysian History Association Terengganu branch’s office is being restored by the National Heritage Department.

National Heritage Department principal assistant director Mat Nasir Baba said the two-storey `Rumah Limas Bungkus’ which was almost 100 years old was once owned by a Terengganu royalty, Tengku Teh Dungun.

He said Tengku Teh was the wife of Tengku Seri Bijaya Raja Tengku Chik Ahmad Abdul Rahman, who was Terengganu religious affairs commissioner from 1924 to 1929.

The building became the Kuala Terengganu Municipal Council office from 1946 to 1979, he told reporters after visiting the mansion recently.

Mat Nasir said after Tengku Teh died, her son, Tengku Abdul Rahman sold the stately home to Tengku Bijaya Wangsa Tengku Hitam Ali, who was then Terengganu heritage and education chief.

He said Terengganu Islamic Affairs Office had also used the building as its office from 1937 to 1938.

The 557.4 sq m mansion is made of concrete lime while the wooden doors and windows and concrete staircase handrails were decorated with engraved motifs, he added.

“The building will be handed to the Malaysian History Association Terengganu once the restoration work is completed next month,” he said.

The mansion, which has three wings, also houses the Terengganu Literary Association (Pelita) — Bernama.

Heritage building in Terengganu being restored
Tuesday August 11, 2009
By TUAN AZAM TUAN JOHAN

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2009/8/11/southneast/se_01restore.jpg

KUALA TERENGGANU: Resto-ration work on a century-old mansion here, once home to Terengganu aristocrats, has uncovered carvings on the concrete walls, wooden doors, windows and staircase.

The carvings were discovered beneath many layers of paint that workers had scraped off, said Mat Nasir Baba, principal assistant director of the archeology and conservation division of National Heritage Department (NHD).

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2009/8/11/southneast/se_02original.jpg

Historical value: Renovation work in progress at the
building in Jalan Tok Lam, Kuala Terengganu, recently.

NHD is restoring the two-storey building in Jalan Tok Lam, belonging to the Terengganu branch of Malaysian Historical Society.

The building originally belonged to Tengku Teh Dungun, wife of Terengganu’s second religious affairs commissioner Tengku Seri Bijaya Raja Tengku Chik Ahmad Abdul Rahman.

Tengku Cik Ahmad held the post from 1924 to 1929.

Following his demise, his son Tengku Abdul Rahman sold it to Tengku Bija Wangsa Tengku Hitam Ali, Terengganu’s head of treasury and the head of education then.

The building, which is more than 100 years old, had also housed the Terengganu Religious Affairs office from 1937 to 1938.

It later housed the Kuala Terengganu Town Council’s office from 1946 to 1979, said Mat Nasir when he visited the building recently.

Since last January, the limestone-concrete structure with a floor area of 6,000 square feet, has been undergoing restoration work expected to be completed by the end of the month.

It is divided into three sections, and due to its shape, the Malays called it Rumah Limas Bungkus.

NHD is taking the trouble to restore the building as it has intrinsic beauty and value yet to be relished by anyone.

“We found that the building had been renovated a number of times. As such, it was difficult to identify the original front portion and kitchen.

“I believe the walls had four to five layers of paint,” said Mat Nasir.

Workers also found a closed-up well at one end. It was then dug out and restored to its original state.

“Houses of Terengganu in the early days had a well in the kitchen,” said a worker.

Mat Nasir noted that, with the considerable amount allocated for the work, the department could restore the building to its original state.

“When ready, we will hand the building over to the Malaysian Historical Society’s branch in Terengganu.

“We hope the organisation will go all out to collect historical items, conduct research and invite the participation of schoolchildren,” he added. — Bernama

partly true about the architectural part, but at least if they really want to have a 'bumbung panjang' or 'tebar layar bertingkat' (the character of west coast), they have to make BOLD of these elements, not a 'weak' identity like the one they have now.

yeah i think they overdid the size and the numbers of domes
too overpowering those dome, and the kelabu purple atap is ?????
like i said,it ok to have dome in kl on account of kl station,n abd samad builing than the melawati 3tingkat roof system

palace should be mostly white as it the color of the sultan,

best example of a good malay style palace architecture is still nurul iman,

its really awkward to built a palace just in front the hill which i think not very stable. The location is not right and dangerous too. The good location for this palace is should be in:-
1. front of the sea, beach e.g Pantai Batu Burok
2. wide open green field
3. beside man-made lake, e.g nearby Masjid Terapung Terengganu
4. above hill
5. along Sg Terengganu near KT e.g Taman Tamadun Islam
