Just a bit of back ground history on this place taken from its website ;).......

The history of Carcosa Seri Negara is integral to the development and history of Malaysia.

In 1895, four Malay states were governed by hereditary Sultans, with the help of British advisors. Sir Frank Swettenham, then the British advisor to the Sultan of Perak, suggested that the four states form a single Federation. His suggestion was accepted by the Sultans and the British Foreign Office. Sir Frank himself was appointed the first Resident-General of the Federated Malay States.

Kuala Lumpur then was a simple village inhabited mainly by Chinese tin miners. But Sir Frank had loved the site ever since 1888, when he visited a jungle area on the western outskirts. Feeling that the town needed a public area, he supervised the damming of a stream on that jungle site. The stream became a lake and the jungles became what is today the Lake Gardens.

In 1896, Sir Frank started constructing his official residence above the Lake Gardens. This was Carcosa, probably a stylization of the Italian cara cosa or "dear place".

In 1904, Sir Frank moved to Carcosa, at the same time finishing a building called "King's House" on an adjacent hillside. King's House, today Seri Negara (which means "beautiful country"), was to house the Governor of the Straits Settlements as well as other illustrious guests of the Malay Federation.
From 1904 until the 1941 Japanese invasion of Malaysia, Carcosa was the official residence of the highest British representative to the Malay States. The titles have varied over the years (Resident General became Chief Secretary, which became British Resident, Selangor State), but Carcosa always remained "the house on the hill". Receptions, formal balls, holidays were always celebrated here. When guests arrived, they were housed at the King's House.

A point of pride with the residents has always been the Lake Gardens. Malaysia has over 18,000 indigenous plants, trees, and flowers. Added to these, the British planted flora from their previous postings, many of which thrived in this privileged spot.

During World War II, Carcosa became the Japanese Senior Officers' Army Mess. In August 1945, the British Army used the mansions for their own Senior Officers until a Chief Secretary was appointed. With the independence of Malaya in 1957, Carcosa became the official residence of the British High Commissioner, while the King's House - now renamed Seri Negara - was the official guesthouse for Malaysia's most important visitors.
In 1987, Carcosa was returned to the Government of Malaysia. In 1989, after Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II stayed at Carcosa during the meeting of the commonwealth nations - Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), both mansions were administered together forming what is now called Carcosa Seri Negara.

Internally, they have gone through several changes. What had once been drawing rooms, studies, and small guestrooms are now suites and function/banquet rooms. Externally, Carcosa Seri Negara preserves its original outlines. The mansions, set against the manicured lawns and the lake gardens, show a part of Malaysia which seemingly can never change.

CARCOSA SERI NEGARA RELAUNCHES SERI NEGARA MANSION

As the invitation stated, there was truly a regal "return of elegance" with the re-launching of Seri Negara on 25th October 2002. After two years of meticulous restoration, this mansion resumed its rightful place as part of Carcosa Seri Negara, the only colonial boutique hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

The lawn of the palatial Seri Negara was the venue for hospitality in the style to which Carcosa Seri Negara has long been accustomed. Over 500 guests were present for the occasion, which was celebrated with non-stop entertainment that included jazz and brass band performances, singing by "the Malaysian Tom Jones" and a showcase of Celine's latest Spring / Summer 2003 collection. A lavish spread of food and drinks was served during the event, and complimentary stays at Carcosa Seri Negara's 13 exclusive suites were given away during the lucky draw as the party's finale.

Built in 1904, Seri Negara was originally called the "King's House" and was designated as the official residence of the Governor of the Straits Settlements. King's House was vacated by the British High Commissioner on August 31, 1957, and returned to the Malayan Government. It was then opened as a state guest house, known as Istana Tetamu, hosting many a visiting dignitary. In accordance with its elevated status, the building was renamed Seri Negara. Newly restored and refurbished to the highest contemporary standards of comfort, safety and convenience, this splendid residence has been universally recognised as an integral part of the national heritage.

Today, after a two-year renovation, Seri Negara presents its six historic suites enhanced by modern facilities. Retained in all its glory is the magnificent view of Kuala Lumpur's skyline. Traditional English afternoon tea with scones and strawberries is served at the famous Drawing Room on a Victorian silver three-tier carrier. As the only restaurant in Kuala Lumpur to feature fine-dining Malay cuisine, The Gulai House provides dining options at the revamped Seri Negara mansion. For conferences, meetings and seminars, guests needs can be catered to in style at Ledang I and II, and Jerai Suite.

The memorable event was graced by numerous leading lights of local society.

Here's an article and some pictures I found on Carcosa Seri Negara:

Text by WENDY KHADIJAH MOORE

http://www.sojourn.com.my/archive/2001/12/images/carcosa_tpic_r3.jpg

The elegant Carcosa Seri Negara is set in its own tropical garden.

CHAMBER MUSIC tinkles in the background as pampered guests, society matrons, expatriate wives with time on their hands and tourists looking for a touch of history with class enter the drawing room for afternoon tea. Contemplating the cake rack as a uniformed waiter pours tea, the guests relax on Regency chairs in an alcove lined with bay-windows draped in floral chintz. They could well be sitting in an upper-class English residence, so authentic is the reproduction, if not for the view outside the window where palms and century-old rain trees draped with ferns shatter the illusion. But the contrast between the tropical surrounds and the elegance and ambience of a 19th-century mansion is what makes Carcosa Seri Negara so appealing.

http://www.sojourn.com.my/archive/2001/12/images/carcosa_stairway.jpg

A hotel only since 1989, the 19th-century mansion boasts a
grand entrance hall and staircase.

Kuala Lumpur’s grandest hotel, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1998, can be counted on to provide an atmospheric colonial experience with impeccable style. No wonder, given its illustrious history.

http://www.sojourn.com.my/archive/2001/12/images/carcosa_tea.jpg

A sumptuous afternoon tea is served
in the drawing room.

Unlike Asia’s other “grand hotels”, however, which have always been hotels, Carcosa has only taken paying guests for little more than a decade. Built on a hill top overlooking the Lake Gardens, by Sir Frank Swettenham, the first Resident-General of the Federated Malay States, this handsome, palatial house served as the colonial governors’ residence until Independence, except during World War II when it housed senior officers of the Imperial Japanese Army. After Independence in 1957 it became the British High Commissioner’s home until it reverted to the Malaysian Government in 1987. Two years later it became a luxury hotel and, true to its genteel reputation, the first guest welcomed was HRH Queen Elizabeth II. She was so delighted by her experience she became Carcosa’s most famous return guest.

Edwin Le Prince, executive housekeeper and Carcosa’s most experienced personal butler, recalls her stay with fondness but with the circumspection required of those serving the rich and famous. He gives guests undivided, 24-hour service, a feature of the hotel. At 7am on the dot he would provide a boiling kettle of water for the Queen to make her own tea, a practice that he particularly admired; while no-one, Edwin declares, can match Mel Gibson for jokes and a hard workout, recalling a particularly gruelling tennis match on the hotel’s hard courts. Other guests he’s been fortunate to serve include Yassar Arafat, Jacky Chan and John Major.

The hotel’s exclusivity means that there are only 13 suites, of which the Queen’s Suite, is the most expensive at RM3,500 per night, or almost US$1,000. Besides the bedroom, bathroom and dining room, it has an antiques-filled audience room which opens to a spacious verandah overlooking the lush 40-acre gardens with a view of Kuala Lumpur’s skyscrapers beyond.

Dining at Carcosa Seri Negara was always, as it is now, an exclusive event for a select clientele. In the colonial days, dinner guests were formally attired and entered the dining room in pairs as a band played the “Roast Beef of Old England”. The only way to secure an invitation to dinner was by entering one’s name in a book at the guardhouse and then waiting to see if one would be selected by the Private Secretary. These days, the only credentials you need to dine, or indeed stay, at Carcosa are a gold credit card or a bulging wallet.

Weekend palace by the lake

By GEETHA KRISHNAN

THE grey mansion in a distance across Putrajaya Lake often attracts attention. Its bearing is regal yet no indication is given of its importance save for a giant Selangor flag flapping majestically over the glistening waters of the man-made lake.

On the other side of the lake, a nondescript sign simply stating Istana Darul Ehsan is wedged between roads leading into the residential area of Precinct 8.

Stately iron gates soon appear, bearing royal crests – just as unassuming as its royal owner who has won the hearts of his subjects with his humility, sportsmanship and above all, charisma.

Istana Darul Ehsan is the weekend palace of the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

It is the sultan’s fifth palace, the others being Istana Mestika Shah Alam, Istana Bukit Kayangan in Shah Alam, Istana Alam Shah in Klang and Istana Selangor in Kuala Lumpur.

Work on Istana Darul Ehsan began on Nov 22, 2000, during the reign of the sultan’s late father Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah who assumed the throne as the 11th Yang Di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia in 1999.

Sadly, the King passed away in 2001 before work on the palace was completed last year.

Comptroller of The Royal Household to the Sultan of Selangor, Datuk Zakaria Abd Rahman, said the construction of Istana Darul Ehsan was based on an agreement between the late King and former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“Sultan Sharafuddin only assumed control of the palace when it was 60% ready. But he decided to retain the building’s style and theme for the interior, furnishings, furniture and fixtures in memory of his father,” Zakaria said during a brief tour of the palace.

“Tuanku who is also sad that his late father never lived to see the palace completed only requested for two changes to be made.

“He asked that the flagpole be raised 100 feet and the palace be renamed Istana Darul Ehsan for it was formerly known as Istana Selangor. This was done to avoid confusion over the existing Istana Selangor,” he added.

Built Tudor-style with a light and deep grey facade, the palace is more of a mansion.

The crowd frequenting Dataran Putra and Selera Putra located across the lake are often caught gaping at it in sheer fascination.

It is extremely difficult to contain one’s excitement as well when given the golden opportunity to tour the palace as it is not open to the public.

Opulent to the highest degree, the interior is done in gold, cream and subdued yellow. The grand doors open to a large lobby constructed in a semi-circle.

The marble floors offer a mirror image and are spotless. Ten staff work around-the-clock maintaining the palace.

Three regal portraits of Sultan Sharafuddin hold fort over the lobby while handcrafted boat and yacht models from around the world are placed sparingly around the spacious area.

It goes without saying that the sultan is an ardent seaman, having sailed around the globe in the yacht S.Y. Jugra in 1995 and returning home a year later a national hero.

Istana Darul Ehsan is split into six storeys and serviced by lifts. There are a number of rooms within the palace including the sultan’s well-guarded private quarters. Sultan Sharafuddin is also extremely fond of his personal library.

The living area just before the library holds keris paintings by famous local artist Azman Yusof. The sultan is also a collector of artist Datuk Ibrahim Hussein’s works.

The grand reception area located one floor below the lobby looks out to a splendid view of Putrajaya namely Putra Mosque, Selera Putra and the Prime Minister’s Office. It also offers a great view of the palace’s well manicured lawns and private jetty.

Huge columns support the area and the furnishings, all local, for the sultan takes great pride in home products, are magnificent.

A corner of the area has even been dedicated to music recitals with a baby grand piano stealing the limelight.

More models of boats and yachts are placed strategically here and some are of historical importance. The Friesland 1663 for instance is a replica of the first Dutch ship to arrive in Malacca.

Then there is the scale model of an armed trading Bugis perahu circa 1880, presented to the sultan by the Royal Selangor Yacht Club.

A portrait of the late King Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah looks over a portion of the hall and is placed above the family photographs of Sultan Sharafuddin where the sultan is featured in a relaxed pose with his children, daughters Tengku Zerafina and Tengku Zatashah and the Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah.

Anyway this Carcosa Seri Negara is so exclusive that not many locals knew it existed and when I actually drove my friends there just to take a look....they are often mesmerized! Certainly it is one of KL's best kept secret! :D

In fact Carcosa's sister hotels (all super luxurious ones) are not too well known abroad like The Datai and The Andaman (both located at the Datai Bay - which is one of Discovery Channel's top beaches and 'best kept secret beach') :D

"The famous former residence of a rich mining towkay named Chua Cheng Bok.It was occupied by a famous french restaurant called Le Coq d'Or for several years until it was closed down in 1999.

When Chua was just a poor boy, he fell in love with a beautiful rich Chinese girl who lived next door. He wanted to marry her but the girl's father forbade it. Chua, who ran a bycycle repair shop, vowed that he would make the girl's father regret his desicion. From then on he devoted his full energy to making money. From bycycle shop to tin buying to tin mining. As can be expected, he became rich and famous. He then built this house to overcome that of his wealthy neighbour which has long since dissapeared.

It was a sad day when the restaurant was finally closed, I have some good memories of it. The restaurant staff was always mighty friendly. The food is good and in such huge amount per serving. Not only they serve western food but also Chinese and Thai. The restaurant occupied only some part of the ground floor of the house and if you are not interested in dining there but just want to have a look at the house, they would gladly let you go straight to the first floor. The house is truly amazing. There is still a marble statue of a woman in one of the bedroom. It is sad now that the house is in the state of unkept, the front gate are locked and we are forever deprived it of its beauty. I wonder how it was like when the Boks were there."

http://www.cheongfatttzemansion.com/0splash.jpg

INTRODUCTION

A Unique Heritage Experience

Located in the historic inner city of George Town, the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, dazzling in its original indigo-blue, is the mysterious Orient's best preserved paradigm Chinese courtyard house. Painstakingly restored in recent years, the myth behind "China's last Mandarin & first Capitalist" is revealed in the architecture that incorporates 38 rooms, 5 granite-paved courtyards, 7 staircases & 220 vernacular timber louvre windows. The winner of UNESCO's Asia-Pacific Heritage 2000 Award for Conservation, the building's eclectic character is a reflection of the times at the end of the 19th Century when the myths & magic of the Chinese Kingdom embraced the glory of the British Empire in a whirling pool of cross-cultural energies.

110 years of history resonates within its cool, secluded, tropical spaces. 16 uniquely themed bedrooms of generous proportions echo the interior styles of various periods of human endeavour in Penang. A talented team of local & foreign artists lovingly crafted plans as interpretations of an ambience that evokes images of the days of wives, concubines & handmaidens aplenty, coyly hiding behind gilded Chinese lattice screens & gossamer silk curtains. To stay is to discover the beauty of "Jian Nian", "Feng Shui" & other lost arts within. The legacy of the consul of the Ching Dynasty in Malaya & Singapore beckons to you.

The Owner-hosted Home Stay

The Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion owner-hosted home-stay offers short and long-term residential stays in 16 uniquely themed bedroom apartments. These vary in size from the Scholar's Suite to the Straits Suite and others of equally exotic disposition. All rooms are fully air-conditioned [or ceiling fans if you wish] and come with an en-suite bathroom and a personal valet. Common facilities include 2 archive rooms, a reading room, a TV room, an alfresco breakfast area in the courtyard, landscaped gardens, private car-parking and 24-hour security.

ABOUT THE MANSION

Architecture

The Mansion, dazzling in its original indigo-blue, incorporates 38 rooms, 5 granite-paved courtyards, 7 staircases and 220 windows. Master craftsmen were imported from China, in the 1880's and again in the restoration in the 1990s. The paradigm Chinese Courtyard House has been embellished with Chinese timber carvings and porcelain cut & paste decorative shard works as well as Gothic louvred windows, art nouveau stained glass panels, Stoke-on-Trent floor tiles and Scottish cast iron works. It is an edifice of impressive delicacy, awesome in its "feng shui" subtleties and is an extraordinary tribute to the construction and design skills of the past.

The inner city mansion was acquired in 1990 in an extremely dilapidated state. A Grade One restoration has been carried out and has culminated in the project being judged the winner in the UNESCO Heritage 2000 Awards. 'History was preserved by meticulously applying extensive research on the architecture, traditional artisan skills and materials to the restoration' - has had enormous impact and influence on the preservation movement in Penang - and serves as a model for the restoration projects throughout the city of Georgetown and indeed, the broader region.'

HISTORY

The Owners

In 1990, a small group of Heritage preservationists led by Laurence Loh, an architect, acquired the Mansion to ensure that it would be maintained & conserved for posterity. Insensitive development would have ruined an irreplaceable cultural asset.

Why Restore?

The mansion was then in an extremely dilapidated state. In respect for its unique qualities, it was necessary to restore the building as closely as possible back to its original fabric & form in order to preserve its cultural significance.

A Grade One restoration was carried out. This culminated in the project being judged the winner in the UNESCO Heritage 2000 Awards cycle. The citation read, "History was preserved by meticulously applying extensive research on the architecture, traditional artisan skills & materials to the restoration….. has had enormous impact & influence on the preservation movement in Penang …. and serves as a model for restoration projects throughout the City of Georgetown & indeed, the broader region". The international guidelines for conservation with authenticity were followed & where necessary traditional materials were imported from China.

About the Man
http://www.cheongfatttzemansion.com/images/4pic-man.jpg
Epitomizing the rags-to-riches story, Cheong Fatt Tze left China, a penniless 16-year-old in 1856 and grew to become a one-man multinational conglomerate.
Dubbed "China's last Mandarin and first capitalist", Cheong was honoured with the title of "Rockefeller of the East" by the New York Times. Consult General for China, Mandarin of the Highest Order, director of China's railway and first modern bank, flags were ordered to be flown at half-mast by the Dutch and the British in their colonies, to honour this man when he passed away in 1916. Although he had homes throughout the East, he chose Penang as his operational base and built a late 19th Century architectural legacy of the highest order. It was designed to reflect his stature as well as to embody his ability to successfully combine an eclectic approach to life.

CONSERVATION

The cycle of life has been restored to the Mansion, to reactivate the intrinsic meaning of the place. As a private, inward-looking home, the values of family life & filial piety were nurtured by Cheong Fatt Tze who led by word & deed. Except for the incorporation of modern sanitary & ventilation amenities in the bedrooms, the original building fabric has been lovingly restored in pursuit of authenticity.

High ceilings timber floorboards on joists, ventilated rooms with open cast iron fanlights, sheltered verandahways around courtyards open to the sky, hand-plastered walls, lime-wash in Indigo Blue & Chinese lacquered doors & windows are some elements that pay respect to the traditions of a distant past. The ambience is as it was.

A door will slam with the breeze. The thud of footsteps on floorboards will transmit a rhythm. The sounds of human voices will travel within the house, expressing the whole range of human emotions. Handcrafted windows will expand in the rainy season. Colours will fade under the hot tropical sun & painters, carpenters & artisans will labour continually to maintain the high quality of traditional craft, even whilst breakfast is served.

The human rhythms of the place will be the core of its existence. This is the essence of the life & times of Cheong Fatt Tze in his favourite home in Asia, the seat of his Nanyang Empire. This experience is yours to share. Expect it to be different, for sometimes it can be unyielding to modernity & contemporary values.

Blessed by the spirit of great architecture & a sense of community, the place invites us to take a step back into the past.

Malaysia got so many istanas! Each royal family had a dozen and some are museums. And we have 9 royal families :D

Putrajaya (being just 6 years old) alone had 2 istanas :D

KL got many.....I think got 10.....but I only know the location of 6 of those :D

They ruined Kelly's Castle! Why did they have to paint the outside part that is not finished?! And why did they have to finish the upstairs part?! It's awful! Actually, if it's to stabilise the building, I don't mind and I like that they finish in different colour so that you know what's new and what's old, but the outside part painted yellow is awful!!!

Uhhh ... unfortunately, so many buildings slated for demolition have actually been destroyed, szehoong!

The PAM building was lucky to escape its planned fate, and we can call be happy and grateful for that. :okay: And if it's still around (and considering TYW is not happy with the old photo), would it be possible for one of you guys with a camera to go by there one of these days (or in a month or 2) and take a current picture of it? :)

Btw, I don't mean to indicate by the above that I'm TOTALLY OPPOSED to demolition of ALL old buildings. While I'm sure a lot of irretrievable beauties have been permanently lost, not EVERY old building merits preservation.

YUp......the PAM Centre are formally known as the Loke Mansion and it is the secondary residence of one of KL's richest tycoon - Loke Chow Kit. It is stated for demolition when the estate of Loke sold to a developer in 1981 but a quick intervention of PAM (which is the Architect Association of Malaysia) saved the building. PAM requested our mayor to stop the demolition and subsequently the building had been accorded a heritage building status...phew! :D

Royal retreat a sight to behold

By GEETHA KRISHNAN

http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2005/4/p21istanathb.jpg

An amazing building perched on a hill greets those who drive into the heart of Putrajaya, often leaving them wondering if their eyes are deceiving them.

Istana Melawati, the retreat of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Raja Permaisuri Agong, is indeed a magical sight. While the palace isn’t open to the public, tourists rarely stifle the urge to photograph the splendour of the building from afar.

http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2005/4/p24pool.jpg

One of the rising turrets cast a shadow on the pool area of the palace.

Modelled after ancient Malay palaces, Istana Melawati bears close resemblance to Istana Kenangan in Kuala Kangsar, Perak. Other influences were derived from the magnificent architectural elements of the Malay Archipelago.

Spread over a 6.9ha site with a lush garden and a view that is hard to beat, Istana Melawati lives up to the general grandeur of palaces by leaving its own distinctive marks.

Driveways leading to the palace are dotted with streetlights featuring birdcage designs. Light fittings within the Reception Lounge are based on the less-inverted grasshopper cage design.

Understated opulence thrives within the airy lounge where timber works and elaborate carvings blend with contemporary Czech chandeliers and Indonesian sandstone columns.

Located within the third wing, the lounge also looks out on a ceremonial courtyard flanked by traditional wooden gazebos built over water. Away from the lounge is a replica of a balai nobat made entirely from cengal wood by master craftsmen from Terengganu.

http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2005/4/p24istanamewalati.jpg

The interior reflects the splendour of the exterior.

The Royal Wing houses the private quarters of the King and Queen as well as VIP suites. The Main Wing is where all ceremonial and official functions are held.

Official investiture ceremonies take place at the Bilik Singgahsana, which is grand in every aspect.

The Rulers’ Conference Hall is where rulers of each state converge annually to discuss matters of national importance. Each chair bears the royal crest of each state, while smaller chairs are reserved for each Mentri Besar.

The main banquet hall seats 250 guests, while a smaller hall is reserved for the royal family to dine in privacy and comfort.

Hmm…that won’t be too easy, unless of course you’re royalty as well! There are strict protocols and official procedures involved. Calling up LKY would probably be a lot more easier. :D Redstone, you could try contacting the Royal Abu Bakar Musuem in Johor Bahru instead.

Abu Bakar Royal Museum Johor,
Istana Besar,
80000 Johor Bahru, Johor.
Tel: 07-220351

Or, you could also call up the people at the Johor branch of the National Archives of Malaysia.

Arkib Negara Malaysia,
Cawangan Johor,
Tingkat 7, Blok B, Wisma Persekutuan,
Jalan Air Molek,
80000 Johor Bahru,
JOHOR DARUL TAKZIM.
Tel : 07-2282052 / 2230539
Fax : 07-2232171

I'm not too sure about the significance... apart from the name "Royal Blue" given to that particular tone of blue. The Johor state flag also has a blue field with a red canton :)

But looking at old pictures, it seems that the roof of the Johor Istana has not been blue always. Even the walls had an off-white-cream sort of color. ;)

Istana Woodneuk, Tyersall Avenue, Singapore

An abandoned istana, formerly the biggest private house in terms of plot size here. Had been abandoned by the last caretaker since the late 1980s.

Now visited by photographers. Last time by drug addicts and illegal workers. :runaway:

A 43 room (all rooms counted, that is) mansion with attached servants' quarters.

A grand staircase in the grand hall. 2 servant access stairs (servants can't use grand stairs I suppose?).

3 kitchens. 2 for servants themselves.

3 chimneys

1 garage for 2 medium sized cars.

1 (suprisingly small) porch

15 toilet/bath/shower rooms (some room within room separate bath/toilet area), which 6 are for servants. One bathroom even has attached balcony!

7 balconies, 2 verendahs, 1 terrace (no roof covering)

Istana Woodneuk is not really considered 'big' is it?

It looks big to me, but remembering of course the Johor Sultanate built many more istanas in Johor itself. And most of them were built quite beautifully. I think that there are atleast 4 old ones in JB itself. There were also many within the Istana Gardens itself.

(info in last paragraph wrong)

Was built circa 1932, designed by Swan & Maclaren
