Yes it's Hind Street where the University want to build the Hotel and also Students accomodation, -----I think it's the next phase in their £75 million plus programme, --I don't think theres a start date yet, ---there will probably be a announcement, --maybe next year.

Nice one, lets hope its happens as our track record on hotels actually being built is very poor.

There's quite a number of proposed Hotels being given planning permission this year alone, ----and some were due to start in the summer gone, --we know it's the Economic downturn to blame for most, --lets hope it picks up next year, and we the start of building work, ---we can only hope.

At present It's hard to say which of all the proposed Hotels have the best chance mate, ----but out of the City Centre proposals, ----the University seems committed to their plans on the City Campus Hind Street ---plus maybe the one at Joplings and the High Street West one, we might see progress on those next year, --- ----of course there's a couple on the out skirts of the City which could progress too, ---they are the Turbine Business Park, just off the A19, --and the Rainton Gate Park just off the A690 Houghton.

Wearside is to become a major international centre for medical research with the opening of a £7.5million science complex.
It will allow Sunderland University to research new drugs and therapies, and play a large role in targeting the health problems plaguing the city and the rest of the North East.

The centre will allow health businesses and organisations the use of leading science experts and some of the most up-to-date facilities in the UK.

Professor John MacIntyre, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, said the university was already recognised for its high standards in subjects such as pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences, biomedical sciences and environmental sciences.

"The research and work be carried out in the new facility will complement the work of Newcastle Science City and will significantly develop our collaborations with key regional, national, and international partners," he said.

"We are particularly keen to see our work used to help companies in the North East."

"The latest figures show total investment in research and development (R&D) in the North East is half the national rate. A strong R&D base is essential to encourage companies to invest in the region, as well as providing a catalyst for the improved performance of existing businesses."

The new facility is part-funded by regional development agency One NorthEast through the European Regional Development Fund and will draw high-quality students from across the world. Many are expected to remain in the region.

The whole project, which is due for completion this December, will see more than 4,000 square metres of university buildings turned into high-quality, accessible science facilities.

The plans have been widely welcomed and it is hoped the centre will play a significant role in tackling health problems most relevant to Sunderland

According to the Health Survey for England, about 18 per cent of children aged two to 15 in the UK were obese, with the North East being above average at 19.5 per cent.

The region also suffers because of conditions like Type Two diabetes and a higher than average smoking population.

The way I read it was that existing university buildings on the Chester Road campus will be converted and upgraded to house the facilities. This probably also links into the proposals for new public square in the centre of the campus.

Uni pioneers life-saving transplant procedure

‘benefits incredible’: Dr Noel Carter.

Lives will be saved by a pioneering procedure that will see medics "cool" organs to preserve them for waiting transplant patients.
As demand for donations continues to outstrip supply, scientists from Sunderland University are hopeful they have found a way to expand the donor pool.

A potential source is people who have suffered heart attacks, but the organs are starved of oxygen and can be damaged and therefore unsuitable for transplant.

However, work to preserve these organs is taking place at Sunderland.
Research shows that rapidly "cooling" the kidneys minimises the damage and preserves organs.

This has led to the development of new medical devices to rapidly cool the organs, which have been approved by the NHS and are now being used.

Ray Downey, from Sunderland Kidney Patients Group, welcomed the work but said proof of the benefits would come in the improvements to patients' lives.

"I take my hat off to them," he said. "Any kind of improvement like that is brilliant."

Dr Noel Carter, senior pharmacy lecturer in the Sunderland University's Faculty of Applied Sciences, said: "The primary aim is to expand the donor pool – if we can achieve this, then the benefits will be incredible.

"One of our PhD students, Alex Navarro, has based his thesis on the development of new medical devices to allow the rapid cooling of the organs."

The university research focused on "non-heart beating donors" – cases where patients have suffered a heart attack either in intensive care, A&E or outside, and there has been an extended period of time in which the body is warm and there is no oxygen being supplied to the organs.

Dr Carter said: "Our research focuses on minimising the damage to the tissue and on regenerating it before you get the organ working again and transplant it into a recipient."

The biomedical science team is collaborating with a German pharmaceuticals company to assess an anti-inflammatory drug to assist the organ cooling.

A great athlete honoured, ---and an award created in Patrick Lavelle's memory, ---this from the Sunderland Echo, ----

Sunderland Uni honours Olympian legend

Published Date: 13 July 2010
Wearside has honoured one of the world's greatest-ever athletes.
Four-time Olympic champion Michael Johnson received an honorary doctorate from the University of Sunderland for his outstanding contribution and ambassadorial role in the world of athletics.

The U.S. sprinter received his award from Chancellor and
ADVERTISEMENTfellow ex-athlete Steve Cram, alongside hundreds of students at the graduation ceremony at the Stadium of Light.

Michael broke records in the 200m, 400m and 4x400m relay and was a nine-times world champion. He became known as the fastest man in the world in 1996 when he completed the 200m and 400m Olympic double in Atlanta, in world record times.

He retired from athletics in 2001 and is now an award-wining BBC broadcaster, Times newspaper columnist, motivational speaker and mentors some of athletics' top runners.

Michael said: "I am delighted to be associated with the University of Sunderland and I feel proud to have received an honorary award, my first one, from the institution, especially from Chancellor Steve Cram.

"I have always been involved in athletics at the elite end and the support that universities generally give to future stars while they are at college is excellent. Sunderland is no exception – you just have to look at the campus.

"But, I value the importance Sunderland places on grassroots sport and community engagement. Talent isn't like cream – it doesn't always rise to the top.

"You have to go find it sometimes and it can be hard to find. By widening out opportunities to all, regardless of background, you have a much greater chance of finding it."

The family of ex-Echo journalist Patrick Lavelle were also there, where they met the winner of an award created in his memory.

Vicki Newman, 21, from Hebburn, was the first person to be awarded the Patrick Lavelle Journalism Prize for outstanding commitment to the profession.

She was presented with the award during her graduation ceremony.

Patrick's widow Maureen and his youngest son Tom were invited to the event.

Patrick was one of the most respected reporters in the region and was working as a lecturer at the Sunderland University when he lost his battle with cancer in March, aged 50.

Vicki said: "I was extremely proud and honoured to be awarded this prize. Patrick will be sorely missed, he was a brilliant lecturer and a
genuinely nice man."

The Quad Development - major changes from 16th August
August 13, 2010

http://blogs.sunderland.ac.uk/campusprojects/files/2010/03/sciences1106_v01_01c-new.jpg
Pasteur Building

As part of the on-going development of the Quad, major works are to commence on Monday August 16 at the north end of the Gateway building to level out the road and parking area.

This will mean that the car parking bays next to the Johnson building and the Design Centre will be out of use for the duration of these works. The disabled bays at the rear of the Design Centre will be temporarily relocated to the side of the Pasteur building.

Hutton Bank will become a 2-way system for delivery vehicles only, to allow access to the Gateway building. As a result, the car parking bays on Hutton Bank will be out of use, with the exception of the disabled bays which will remain in use during this period.

Executive and reserved parking at the side of the Gateway building will also be
out of use for this period. Whilst reserved parking cannot be pre-booked during the course of these works, a supply of free parking permits will be available for visitors to the University to allow free parking at the main City Campus car park.

To ensure safe pedestrian access to the Gateway building during this period, a designated walkway will be reserved alongside the Johnson building and the Design Centre.

The works are expected to take between 3-4 weeks to complete.

Facilities apologises for any inconvenience caused by these works and thanks students and staff for their continued co-operation and patience.

A NEW development in Sunderland has clinched a prestigious national award.

The 2010 LABC (Local Authority Building Control) National Building Excellence Awards, which took place in the City of London, awarded CitySpace, Sunderland, the award for the Best Large Commercial Building.

The judges say they chose CitySpace as the winner because it is an iconic design combining social, sports and events facilities in a single building and because of its use of sustainable technologies.

The University of Sunderland’s £8.5m four-storey CitySpace building forms part of the ambitious £75m master plan to upgrade its Chester Road facilities.

A NEW £8.5million science complex at Sunderland University has been officially launched by Lord Professor Robert Winston.

The top scientist, broadcaster and influential peer attended the opening of the centre, off Chester Road, which, it is claimed, will bring major health benefits to the North East.

University chiefs say the complex – part of a multimillion pound redevelopment of Sunderland’s City Campus – will deliver research with a “real world impact” in areas such as drug discovery, new therapies and improved health practices.

Lord Winston, pictured, said: “It’s wonderful – the labs are brilliantly set up. Students who come here will benefit from fantastic facilities and will get experience of using industry-standard equipment, which is very important.”

The peer, best known for popularising science and medicine on television, said science was an important area in the North East for improving health and creating new jobs in related industries.

He added: “Ensuring science is accessible and that research is relevant to society is vital. Sunderland, as it regularly shows, does this exceptionally well

Have a little more info'. The uni is considering 3 possible sites for their sports development: a place called 'Downhill' - evidently a rough area but with space, a plot near the Sunderland library and the Silksworth area site. The idea seems to be that the Uni wants to do a 'land swap' with the council - some sort of cost sweetner deal.

I don't know the area that well -esp city centre. The reference to the library was a quote, but it might have been in error. Silksworth has the pool, ski slope, skatepark, tennis, there are 2 astro pitches and a track and athletics kit. However I seem to remember there being probem with the astro. It might be just one of those 'stories' but the person telling me is in a position to know.

I looked on the University site to see if there is any info/news, --but there's nothing, -------but reading about their Sports Programmes, --and they are already in partnership with the Council and SAFC, --and they have a list of extensive facilities across the City, --including the 50m pool, training pitches at SAFC, --the Ski slope LTA indoor Tennis Centre and many other facilities, --so if the Uni wanted to have a Sports Campus with most facilities on one site, -then Silksworth would be an ideal site, ----so your source could well be correct.

Ashburne House, Backhouse Park, Sunderland.

Published on Saturday 28 April 2012 08:31

A HISTORIC building is to shut its doors to students after nearly 80 years.

Ashburne House in Ashbrooke, Sunderland, has been a base for education since the 1930s.

But bosses at the University of Sunderland said the Grade II-listed building is out-of-date and a consultation has begun over its future.

A spokeswoman said: “As part of our strategy to meet future academic and business needs, Ashburne House sadly now no longer meets the modern-day requirements and is due to be vacated by the end of the year, with the aim of concentrating academic activity on to the two main campuses, City Campus and Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s.

“We are continuing to look at future options for the site and last year began an extensive period of consultation with all interested parties involved, including local residents and the Friends of Backhouse Park.”

Thomas William Backhouse was the last private owner of Ashburne House.

Refurbishment of Priestman Building is progressing well. A new entrance has been incorporated into the west-facing wall to improve connectivity with the rest of City Campus. New signs have been installed at the subway entrance and the yellow dull lighting has been replaced with bright white lights. I must say it's a vast improvement. I used to feel uneasy walking through this subway at night because it is fairly remote but the new entrance to Priestman is almost directly on the other side of the subway so it feels a lot safer already. Shrubs have been cut right back, new turfing laid, and more seating areas have been put in to make the area feel much more welcoming. I think the interior is pretty much finished, the contractors are just finishing up on the outside. I got a photo today.

GREEN campaigners are hoping their latest scheme will be a big turn off.

University of Sunderland has launched The Big Turn Off campaign to encourage its 17,000 full and part-time students and 1,400 staff cut their energy usage.

The university has already exceeded its targets in slashing the amount of carbon emissions across its campuses by almost a quarter in just six years through a range of measures, including improving insulation and installing smart meters.

Now, they want individuals to join in with everyday things ranging from switching off computer screens and phone chargers to sharing the cooking of meals to cut domestic fuel costs.

Collectively these small measures can have a massive impact on the amount of carbon produced by the university and help it meet bold government targets of slashing carbon levels by 48 per cent before 2021.

Sunderland University wins world-class rating

Published on Monday 29 October 2012 08:40

SUNDERLAND University has been awarded world-class accreditation for its highly-rated media degree courses.

Following rigorous assessment by experts working in the creative industry, Sunderland’s MA Media Production, MA Radio and BA Hons have been given the industry kitemark of quality.

Newscaster Alastair Stewart, who is an honorary graduate and has hosted the student media awards ceremony at Sunderland, said: “This is another fine feather in the University of Sunderland’s hat.

“Our media studies students are among the brightest in the land.

“That our courses are recognised for their practical excellence, as much as their academic rigour, is great news for the students and for their potential employers.”

The Tick award came from Creative Skillset, the industry body which supports skills and training for people and businesses in the UK’s creative industries.

STUDENTS were in the hot seat as they helped to produce and develop a TV quiz show pilot.

The Sunderland University undergraduates helped to create the pilot of quiz show Hot Seat for top North East production company Standing Stone.

The 45-minute episode is being developed for a UK broadcaster and was shot in the university TV studios at the David Puttman Media Centre on the Sir Tom Cowie Campus on the banks of the River Wear.

Students were involved in every stage of the production, from casting to the filming and editing.

Michael Gorse, 19, a broadcast media production student, worked as a runner on the production and came up with ideas to change aspects of the show, which is presented by TV host Kirsten O’Brien.
