Everyone hates bad sidewalks- they have to be fixed!
Rickshaws are ok- but they ought to be the less polluting diesel types, or even better electric.

Sidewalks have to be wider and better maintained. Bole road is a relatively new area but a good example how the city lacks planning. There is not enough parking so cars park on sidewalks were people are supposed to go:bash:

We need to establish parking ramps, a way to create revenue, free up space, and add to the city's density to boot.

You know what, we need to give our streets better names. Go look at google maps to see what I mean.

How about ,closing piazza for cars from cinema empire all the way to Aratkilo , and making shopping district open only to pedestrians. with nice lamp poles park benches in the middle trees.and removing old buildings and building a new neoclassic buildings.street with cobblestones etc...

We don't need to be a rocket scientist to make this happen in Addis!
1) We have Plenty of water,
2) It's not expessive to construct,
3) It's easy to maintain.

There are several fountains now, but they don't turn them on (the ones in the park in front of UNECA and Palace; the ones in front of Tikur Anbessa Hospital).

There has to be development of parks, real parks! With grass, trees, benches, fountains, even ponds. People need a place to relax. Addis is a stressful city.

The Woyane people like building monuments- here is an idea for them!
Menelik Avenue would be extended all the way down to middle of Cherkos, preferably renamed the Menged ye-Ityopawi (Way of the Ethiopians). It would be widened to its widest point, which when it passes Africa Hall, which would require the demolition of a couple of buildings. However, the park in between the avenue would be removed entirely, and the avenue would simply have one two way road. This road would be lined with large (4m) tall obelisks on which lamps are mounted (like the Via della Conciliazione in Rome), with a wide sidewalk, a thick row of trees, and then a smaller sidewalk. The avenue would be lined with say 10-15 story buildings, and at the end you would have a monument.

If you do that, the people of Addis will shoot you....:)

Addis ababians line up and wait for hours to take a taxi or a bus from Arat Kilo to Piazza - complaining about the public transportation. Isn't that just a 15 minutes walk? How lazy can we get!:ohno:

Vildana,
Anyways, good idea & I think it is really quiet easy to do and achieve that!
