what's the lake's real name?

Historically the Luo of Kenya used to refer to it as Lake Sango before it reverted to Lake Victoria -Christened by the British. Thanks Mwafrika for those explanations.

Lake Turkana - Northern Kenya

The most saline of Africa's large lakes, Turkana is an outstanding laboratory for the study of plant and animal communities. The three National Parks serve as a stopover for migrant waterfowl and are major breeding grounds for the Nile crocodile, hippopotamus and a variety of venomous snakes. The Koobi Fora deposits, rich in mammalian, molluscan and other fossil remains, have contributed more to the understanding of paleo-environments than any other site on the continent. The Committee inscribed this property on the basis of natural criteria (viii) and (x) for the discoveries of mammal fossil remains in the site which led to the scientific reconstruction of the palaeo-environment of the entire Turkana Lake basin of the Quarternary Period. The Lake Turkana ecosystem with its diverse bird life and desert environment offers an exceptional laboratory for studies of plant and animal communities.

Before this it was known as Lake Ukerewe in Tanganyika (Tanzania)
Lake Nalubaale in Uganda and Lake Nyanza in Kenya :)

Since E Africa is coming together and nothing in England is named after an E African, why continue to call it Victoria? Afterall this glorifies colonialism and too many things in E.A have english names instead of Swahili. It should be renamed to reflect its location-LAKE KENTAZUGA-which is kenya, tanzania and uganda. No more colonialism.

I would suggest any of the ethnic names that were being used to refer to the lake prior to Britsh conquest of EA be reviewed.

You'd create a new problem though.Adopt an ethnic name and any of those communities might feel like they don't matter or they are the only ones that matter all around the lake.Better yet,it better not come from kenya as it might feed into the already widely held view that you are out to dominate the EAC.At least that kentazuga name stays neutral and has something for each country.

Well, Rwanda and Burundi are still left out. Changing names can be difficult. The Aberdare mountains in Kenya were to revert to their original name (Nyandarua mountains) but generations down the line, most Kenyans still call them the Aberdares.

I do not think the origin of the name really matters, some of the names as with tribes are cross national. i.e L. Nyanza the name[Nyanza] is used in Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda.

On the whole I think the name L. Victioria will still live on as their is currently no animosity between Britain and EA States whatsoever that may bring about nationalistic conciousness. And also with some borders issues already in place like Migingo and 'illegal' cross border fishing I do not think the border states are ready for another heart wrenching task of replacing the name L. Victoria.

i don't think it should have anything to do with animosity. i think its illogical to keep a foreign name over an indigenous one, that was imposed by invaders who for all tense and purposes are now gone. i mean you'll never find a lake or mountain or river etc. in europe named after an african like say Menelek II or Kwame Nkruma will you?

btw, that last picture is really great!

Thanx. About the African names in Europe -C'mon I mean thats historical their is nothing much that can be done about the past happenings besides dealing with the colonial powers at the time was brutal. The reason I believe the name will stay is simple, its because people see no reason for that to happen atleast for now both in the grassrots and govt levels.

Not all colonial names remained. For example, Kenya had a lake called Lake Rudolf, but later that changed to its local name L. Turkana. In most cases, if the locals grew up knowing a certain area by a local name, chances are the local name prevailed after independence. For example Port Florence became Kisumu, Fort Hall became Muranga. If L.Victoria was called L. Nyanza today, that name wouldn't stick simply because everyone got used to calling it L. Victoria.

As for the snow, I guess we may have a few more years to go before the glaciers disappear. Then I will sit my grandchildren down one day and tell them how I used to wake up and see the glistening white peaks of Mt. Kenya. (A million thanks to global warming)

The snow will be there alright. What gives Mt. Kenya its beauty is the glaciers that cover the peaks. Same goes for Mt. Kilimanjaro. Without them, they will just appear like rocks with some white sprinkling of icing sugar on top when snow falls (unless its very heavy snowfall).

It doesnt matter! as long as it is an interresting picture of an East African mountain, go ahead. In the city galleries, you are allowed to post pretty much anything related to said city. Dont take it as if we want to exclude Ethiopia, because last time i checked, Ethiopia was part of east Africa. Just show us the pictures, and if someone objects, then tell them to shut up, this is a free thread.

How do you call these plants in Africa?!. :uh:

I´m curious as we have a very similar plant in the venezuelan andes. We call it "Frailejón" and as you can see they are very much alike! :uh: :

http://i39.tinypic.com/2z4n70m.jpg

http://i41.tinypic.com/imuty0.jpg

http://i43.tinypic.com/5p3jq1.jpg

Some of the scientifc names I could find for these plants in our continent are: Espeletia argentea, Espeletia schultii, Espeletia moritziana, Espeletia timotensis and Espeletia spicata (it seems there are some 80 species of frailejon in the Andes region). Frailejones also grow in Northen-Ecuador and Colombia. It's quite interesting to see similar plants in the african continent as well! :uh: . Perhaps, they are remnants from ancient times when both continents were linked together. The curious thing about it however is the ecuatorial Andes are much younger geologically than the jointed continental shields of that time. Btw, frailejon plants grow between 2,000 and 4,300 meters above sea level which seems to be similar as in Africa. How could it be such a similar plant grows some 12,000 kilometers appart in such unique high mountain conditions?; Mountains which are geologically young and suposedly not related to the african continent?. Perhaps high altitude wind-carried pollen as both continents were separating and the Andes were forming along the way?. Any ideas?.

Btw, beautiful pictures of Africa !!! a really beautiful land !!!!

^^Do you study plants DELCROID? you seem to have a good understanding of them

The highlands of the rift valley have some interesting features like you see in the Ethiopian Highlands in those pictures. I had no idea that similar plants like those were found in the Andes, thanks for posting. You are correct in that the plant life looks somewhat similar, I am only guessing but it might have to do with the Afro alpine climate. I am not sure about how the species spread to each region though. I will see if I can find more information about that

That tall one, scientific name Lobelia rhynchopetalum, is visible in both locations for example:

http://i42.tinypic.com/slh174.jpg

Here is some literature about the Ethiopian Highlands (Simien):

These highlands were formed over 75 million years ago, a large dome propelled upwards by volcanic action. Eventually the dome was split by the development of the Rift Valley which threads its way north-east between the southern and northern massifs. This volcanic period ended 4 to 5 million years ago, succeeded by severe climatic fluctuations in the Pliocene and Pleistocene. During the last Ice Age, the higher areas of the Ethiopian Plateau were glaciated and surrounding areas were covered with montane vegetation reminiscent of the Eurasian tundra. As the climate warmed the broad belts of sub-alpine vegetation contracted, and became restricted to higher altitudes. The ice cover on the peaks of these highlands retreated only a few thousand years ago; therefore, vegetation has only relatively recently colonized these areas (Kingdon 1989).

Phytogeographically, the entire area is part of the Afromontane archipelago-like regional center of endemism (White 1983) and is mapped as ‘altimontane vegetation in tropical Africa’.

The vegetation around Mt. Kenya is pretty much the same as the ones in South America exept probably the stockiness due to variations in seasonal climatic conditions. Here's an Interesting quote about the Vegations.
[QUOTE] Vegetation

Vegetation varies with altitude and rainfall, with a rich alpine and sub-alpine flora. Juniperus procera and Podocarpus spp. are predominant in the drier parts of the lower zone (below 2,500 m), with rainfall between 875 and 1,400 mm. Cassipourea malosana predominates in wetter areas in the south-west and north-east (over 2,200 mm/year). However, most of this lower altitude zone is not within the reserve and is now used for growing wheat. Higher altitudes (2,500 m-3,000 m with rainfall over 2,000 mm/year) are dominated by bamboo Arundinaria alpina on south-eastern slopes, and a mosaic of bamboo and Podocarpus milanjianus with bamboo at intermediate elevations (2,600 m-2,800 m), and Podocarpus at higher and lower elevations (2,800-3,000 m) and (2,500-2,600 m). Towards the west and north of the mountain, bamboo becomes progressively smaller and less dominant. Hagenia abyssinica and H. revolutum predominate in areas of maximum rainfall 2,000 m-3,500 m with up to 2,400 mm/year. Above 3,000 m, cold becomes an important factor, tree stature declines, and Podocarpus is replaced by Hypericum spp.. A more open canopy results in a more developed understorey. Grassy glades are common especially on ridges. The lower alpine or moorland zone (3,400 m-3,800 m) is characterized by high rainfall, a thick humus layer, low topographic diversity, and low species richness. Tussock grasses Festuca pilgeri, and sedges Carex spp. predominate. Between the tussocks there are Alchemilla cyclophylla, A. johnstonii, and Geranium vagans. The upper alpine zone (3,800 m-4,500 m) is more topographically diverse, and contains a more varied flora, including the giant rosette plants Lobelia telekii and L. keniensis, Senecio keniodendron and Carduus spp.. Senecio brassica is found in both the lower and upper alpine zone. There are a variety of grasses on well-drained ground and along the streams and river banks such as megaphytic Senecio battescombei and Helichrysum kilimanjari. Continuous vegetation stops at about 4,500 m although isolated vascular plants have been found at over 5,000 m. There are 13 species endemic to Mount Kenya listed in Hedberg.

Lake Tana (also spelled T'ana, Amharic: ጣና ሐይቅ Ṭānā Hāyḳ,"Lake Tana," an older variant is Tsana, Ge'ez ጻና Ṣānā; sometimes called "Dembiya" after the region to the north of the lake) is the source of the Blue Nile and is the largest lake in Ethiopia. Located in Amhara Region in the north-western Ethiopian highlands, according to the Statistical Abstract of Ethiopia for 1967/68, the lake is approximately 84 kilometers long and 66 kilometers wide, with a maximum depth of 15 meters, and an elevation of 1,840 meters. Lake Tana is fed by the Lesser Abay, Reb and Gumara Rivers and its surface area ranges from 3,000 to 3,500 km² depending on season and rainfall. The lake level has been regulated since the construction of the control weir where the lake discharges into the Blue Nile, which regulates the flow to the Tis Abbai falls and hydro-power station...

I don't really know what its name was in those two countries, but being a Luo from its shores I can tell you with all confidence, its name was Lake Sango

Actually it was known lake Nyanza in Tanzania in Sukuma tribe
