Herning is the 12th largest city in Denmark with a population of 45.470 (2009) and the municipality has 85.217 (2009). Sizewise it is one of the largest in Denmark with 1.323 km2 resulting in a population density of just 64,5 pr km2. Last year (2008) the city grew with 707 persons or 1,57 %, making it among the fastest growing Danish towns, despite forecast from Danmarks Statistik expected it to be a lot lower - in fact it took just 1 ½ year to reach a population that was expected to be reached not until 2013 be recent forecasts. Some "unnatural" growth could also happend in the future since there's now less than 3 km between the western Herning and eastern Ikast - a town with a population of 14.785, and parts of the "betweenland" is already build up with the industiral area "HI-Park". There's also the little satellite town of Gullestrup just 500 north of Herning with some 2.107 souls just waiting to be swallowed. The 3 towns combines has a population of 62.362.

With the relative small population in mind, Herning had kind of a construction boom in recent years and it doesn't seem to end right away. Many projects has been completed the last years, many are under construction at the moment and even more are proposed. The global crisis has of course also hit Herning with projects being stopped or on hold, but there's still a lot going on. The economy of Herning is also quite good compared to many other Danish cities at the moment. This is partly because Herning sold it's energy company some years ago for many hundred millions. Some of the money was used paying debt which today results in huge amounts saved on interests.

I'll now go through all the biggest projects, first the ones under construction, then all the proposed ones and finally a little overview of the ones completed here in 2009. Let's get going:

The location is not within the city of Herning, but some 1½-2 KM from both Tjørring and Snejbjerg which is both part of Herning. If the hospital is build, the next "project" will also be realised.

Should anyone be interested in some of the crazy thoughts going on in my head, then I've just written a little futuristic storey about Herning in the year 2035. It can be seen here, only in Danish though:

Funny, but in the seventies we had a socialdemocratic mayor here in Esbjerg, he presented some similar plans for Esbjerg. They planned a city with about 200.000 people, a huge area for a new Univercity and everything....what became of it all.

Nothing.

But it is of course allowed to dream.

mlm
December 10th, 2009, 08:34 AM
^^ So your 70s mayor wanted Esbjerg to grow together with Ikast? No wonder it didn't work out.

As I wrote though, it shouldn't be taken too seriously and it's far from a "plan" although many parts of it is actually in the planning. Others has been metioned by someone "important" at some point and others again are just pure imagination. :)

Some cool news: A new localplan is up for preapproval by the planningdepartment on tuesday. It'll allow 2 building each with 45 meter and 12 floors. Both will be located very centrally very close to "Queens Corner". It seems to new localplan has been underway since early 2008, and I've heard of one of the two proposals before, but I kind of though they were placed on hold (which they still can be of course). However, when the localplan is made now it atleast suggest the plans are still alive somehow.

Here's a "rendering" I just made looking west along the railtracks and Dronnings Boulevard. The two blue structures are the new ones. The two red ones are part of the "Byoasen" where localplan hering ended yesterday. Queens Corner is also just a selfmade rendering on this one.

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/ny/nyehojhuse.jpg

There's also another localplan up for pre app on tuesday, it's for the "Højhus Godsbanevej" descriped in post one. It has however gone from 10-14 floor to now 8-10 floors. That one will be located just to the left of the above photo right where the trainstation is.

A rendering/model and a sketch of the two 12 stoey buildings on Dalgasgade, first Dalgasgade 13-15:

Another new big project was presented yesterday. They're planning to transform a rather boring 113.000 m2 industrial (mostly) area in northwest Herning into mainly a residential area. There will also be stores, offices and education though. When fully "rebuild" they expect some 400-500 new homes. First part, the orange box in the upper right corner, is already under construction. It's the 10.000 m2 "Herningsholm Gymnasium" which you can see in post 1. They also plan a 12 storey highrise (lower right corner).

There's no timehorizon yet, but I estimate that it could take atleast 10 years before everything is transformed, also considdering the many other new projects here. There's a lot of similarities with another project in southern Herning, which has been build during the last 10 years or so, and now are going into the final phase.

Behind the plans are current land-owners, MT Højgaard, Aarstiderne Arkitekter, Cowi and Herning Kommune. A bit more here on my website: Ny bydel på vej (http://www.herningshuse.dk/nyheder.php?nid=62).

Here's a overview from the masterplan, it's of course just the volumes and not detailed architecture. Grey = stores, blue = office, green = housing, orange = education:

Nothing major yet, but a new localplanproposal has seen the light. It's in the southwestern outskirts of Herning, close to MCH Messecenter Herning, and fully build it can include up to 108.986 m2 office buildings. The entire area will be 4 floors high with slim 10 floor high "towers" (40 meters) a bunch of places. Infrastructurewise the location is pretty good, with it's own little trainstation (trinbræt) and the motorway just a few hundred meters to the south. I expect it will take many years before fully build, but we'll see. A little more on my website: Stort nyt erhvervsområde på vej (http://www.herningshuse.dk/nyheder.php?nid=65).

Little overview from the localplan:

Some other news, "Højhus Godsbanevej" (seen in post one) has been approved, and construction can hopefully start soon on the 10 storey, 43 meter high building.

"Byoasen" is also up for final approval now, it will include a 12 storey building.

^^ Looks fine, but I hope they will make some variations in the facades, and I wish they would make som variations in the height of the towers. Still I am very impressed with all the visions, ideas and actual constructions going on in Herning.

mlm
May 28th, 2010, 12:52 PM
^^I'm pretty sure you can expect variations in the facades since there's no way it will all be build at once. I have no idea what the current owners are planning to build, but I imagine it's only a small portion. It's most likely though as a kind of a long term localplan.

I don't know if it is big as such but I guess the Royal Institute of British Arcbitects should know what they are doing nad since not that many are handed out each year I guess it's pretty impressive for a fairly small museum in a small town.

I guess it was a bit stupid to start this thread since I'm too lazy to update it. Since the first post only this school has gone UC:

Tjørring Ny Skole

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/ny/tjorringskole.jpg

There's a bunch of project about to start soon though, all these are very likely to start construction in 2010:

Føtex P-Hus
Construction will start in august:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/ny/fotexphus.jpg

Bilka
Yes we still have a A-Z warehouse. :D It will now finally be converted into a Bilka, then's there's only A-Z in Hjørring left. Construction will start in fall:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/ny/az.jpg

New Courthouse
Construction will start in november or december. Demolishion of existing buildings are completed:

Twins
Construction of the first tower will start "late summer", the second to follow in 2011:

Hus på Hus
Construction to start in fall 2010:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/ny/huspaahus.jpg

Højhus Godsbanevej
Not 100% sure about this one but late last year they said they would start late 2010 and that they had already found tenants for 60%. It was approved a few months ago, 10 floors, 43 meters:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/ny/godsbanevej-ny.jpg

Guess that's the biggest new projects to go UC in 2010 although something can always pop up. :)

Architecturally this is surely nothing to write home about, but construction has just been started on these 3 projects within the last two weeks:

Re-construction of A-Z warehouse to Bilka:

This last one came out of nowhere, re-construction of the oldest part of HerningCentret (right next to Bilka). When completed in about a year the entire centre from 1978 has been either re-constructed or newly build within the last 5 years. A few new shops will also be made since the Kvickly is getting a bit smaller, total will be around 80:

..and btw, there're several infrastructure threads for this, it really dosn't belong here.

Time for a little construction update, this time a flying one. :)

1. Herning Lufthavn, which is located some 4-5 kms north of Herning, opened their newly extended runway today. It has been extended from 900 to 1200 meters, so now it'll be able to handle larger fligts...:

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/flyvetur2010/001.jpg

2: ...like this one, it wasn't able to land before:

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/flyvetur2010/002.jpg

3: I managed to get a very short flight over Herning. It was gray and very windy, so the quality of the photos are quite bad. Here's an overview of the little airport, you can clearly see the extended runway:

4: Here again:

5: Suburbia, here Gjellerup:

6: Birk with the new Heart museum:

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/flyvetur2010/006.jpg

7: Now looking towards central Herning, here in the outskirts of it we find a new area known as "Engholm Søpark". KPC is developing it, and they plan on building some 400-600 homes and a few office buildings. They started "making" the area this spring, but for now only a Netto has been build:

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/flyvetur2010/007.jpg

8: A little closer to central Herning we fly by the new "Herningsholm Gymnasium". This new 10.000 sqm, 171 million DKR building will be opened in 2011:

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/flyvetur2010/008.jpg

9: Just a little north of central Herning:

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/flyvetur2010/009.jpg

10: DGI Parken, it will open in December:

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/flyvetur2010/010.jpg

11: Queens Corner in the middle of the "Wall Street" area. Coming new buildings in this area include a 12 storey highrise in the lower right corner, a 3 storey expansion to the right of Queens Corner, a 4 storey building on the parking lot to the left and a parkeing house in the upper left corner (UC now):

12: Here a closer look of the Parkring house construction site:

13: Really bad quality photo of the new Multiarena. First event is actually tonight, it's a big closed party though:

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/flyvetur2010/013.jpg

14: Fuglsang Sø, and what has been build until now. I think they plan to sell the next plots soon (if someone wants to build of course). A new elderly home is also in the works here:

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/flyvetur2010/014.jpg

15: View of central Herning:

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/flyvetur2010/015.jpg

16: And finally the eyesore called Gullestrup just north of Herning. This big ghettolike project from the 60s is right now undergoing a major renovation, hopefully it will make the area better. Atleast it has now been removed from the "Ghetto list" so things must be going better than a few years ago:

It is so interesting - all what is happening there should be near impossible, yet it is a great example of how far talented, strongly-willed locals - knowing how to play their cards the right way - can get. @ Fab5:

Hard to say, but I'm sure Herning "collects" quite a lot of young people from west/northwest like Ringkøbing, Skjern, Holstebro and so on. It's a fact that it's hard to make people move west, no matter if it's from Århus to Herning or from Copenhagen to Århus so I doubt that's where the main part comes from. It has helped a lot in recent years that HIH has become part of Århus Universitet, just like TEKO also has been growing in number of students for some years. And finally there's also quite a lot (relatively) foreigners both studying and working here.

Although Herning got a decent population increase in recent years, the trees aren't growin into the skies of course. Personally I have a hard time seeing how they are gonna fill all the planned new homes, but as we know not everything will be build. Still better to have tons of plans and build half, than have no plans and build nothing though. :)

Herning has really also been in a construction boom more or less since the motorways came. It's surely not everywhere they work as a catalyst for development, but here I'm sure it's a big part of it. Always impossible to say how big of course...

Anyway, while we're at the photos I also have a handfull or two from yesterday. It's not so much construction updates, but there's too few to start a new thread. It's from the top of the 42 meter tall Højskole building between Herning and Birk.

1. First a skyline view, it's starting to look a little like something, atleast from this altitude:

2. Looking south along Midtjyske Motorvej:

3. Same road, here towards north where it turns into a motortraficway:

4. Closer look at the Bilka construction site. A bit hard to see what's going on from this angle:

5. Opposite direction of Herning, here towards Hammerum:

The new multiarea in Herning is going to be called 'Jyske Bank Boxen'.

Not only do we already have a place with the name 'Boxen' some 30 kilometers up northwest in Holstebro (my avatar picture), but with the brand name Jyske Bank in front, it just sounds silly. If they had to name-sponsor it, why not just Multiarena after? It would be much more appropriate - at least in my opinion.

mlm
October 4th, 2010, 06:44 PM
^^ Personally I glad they have dropped the "multiarena" name. Already before they started building I was sick and tired of hearing it, simple because everyone was talking about a multiarena. Also, more or less all newer big arenas over the world are more or less multipurpose arenas, but you don't see any with the name multiarena in it.

First when I heard the new name I though it was a little strange, but since then it has grown on me and I actually think I like it. Had it just been called "Jyske Bank Arena" it would just be one of many "Sponorname Arena"s.

Whether or not there's a building in Holstebro called "Boxen" doesn't make much difference to me, I've hardly heard that name used to be honest. Isn't it used as a theater or something? It's not like it's two competing venues in any way.

October 5th, 2010, 03:02 AM
^^ No, it is not quite true that more or less all newer big arenas over the world are more or less multipurpose arenas. Another thing is the ugliness of this building, I just don't get it :ohno: And what is up with the new name for it?? :ohno: Not my intention to be rude, but it is the worst example of architecture I have ever seen (It looks like a warehouse) and I have visited alot of sportarenas in Asia, USA and Europe, in connection with my work. To bad for this danish town :( I just hope other danish, european, asian and american cities don't copy this style of ugly architecture, when they build indoor sportarenas.

mlm
October 5th, 2010, 03:12 AM
^^ Maybe now as "multi" as this one, but most new big arenas are used for both sport and concerts so some kind of multi yes.

About the architecture, I don't think you'll find many people who think it's beautiful, I surely don't. I know the facade was supposed to be a lot nicer than what it is now (a lot of glass etc), but it was cut to keep budget as low as possible. If this arena was was in central part of town that would be absolutely unacceptable, but this is placed next to the Messecenter complex which is pretty ugly already, and which is why I have no problem with. Basicly it was this or nothing and I'll still take this over nothing anyday.

I think that is just a nickname for the ugly building, because the theatre group "Black Box Theatre" is located there.

I don't think so, in local dailylife and the newspaper it's being referred to as Boxen. It used to be Dansens Theater, but Peter Schaufuss is long gone, so that's dropped.

And honestly, I wouldn't call it that ugly. Surely, it has a very dominant look, but with the new permanent big-screen and surroundings, it's not that bad at all. Plus, the sunlight reflecting on the building in the morning creates a unique look, and people are beginning to use the space around it, creating a vibrant city life. I think it fits good.

Either way, I think that the multiarena is a great addition to the country and region in general - and looking at the events that already are decided to take place, I'm sure the city of Herning will benefit greatly from it. Still think the name is dull and inappropriate though. It's not ambitious enough, for a project this size.

By the way, Herning is to do paid parking. It's a first, for a city this size and in this region of Denmark. It'll hit the close parking spots in the city centre, plus at MCH. The empty-ish parking basements will remain free, with good reason.

mlm
October 6th, 2010, 10:21 PM
^^ It would surely not call it Boxen either if it was up to me, unfortunately it's not. However, this is a massive investment and chance MCH/Herning has taken, and a sponsorname was already part of the daily budget to begin with. If this was the best they could get so be it. Atleast it could be worse, the new arena in Louisville, Kentucky is called "KFC Yum! Center":D

About the paid parking then yes, I think they plan to implant it around newyear. I would of course always prefere not to, but as most other municipalities Herning has to make budgetcut for next year, so it was either this or something else like schools, roads, etc. And with the many free spaces in the parking garages/houses it won't be too bad.

Actually they'll also get paid parking in Viborg (don't know the details) and in Silkeborg they've had it for some years. Did they completely drop it in Holstebro? if I remember correctly they have also talked about it earlier.

As an addition to the parkingsituation here, they are right now also installing new electronic signs all around the central city. Here's a maps with all of them:

Five consortiums has been chosen for the masterplan and first stage of the new Hosipital, DNV Gødstrup. Deadline for the projects is 18/02/2001, and the winner will be announced in spring or summer 2011:

1 - BDP (UK) (http://www.bdp.com/) with Groupe-6 (France), Arkitektfirmaet TKT, Arup DK / Ove Arup & Partners Intl (UK).
2 - White Arkitekter A/S (http://www.white.dk/) with White Arkitekter Sweden, KHR Arkitekter, Dall & Lindhardtsen, EKJ, WSP Sverige, Midtconsult, Arkitec, Lindgaard, Bisgaard Landskabsarkitekter.
3 - C.F. Møller (http://www.cfmoller.com/) with Cubo Arkitekter, Rambøll, Alectia, Lohfert & Lohfert, Søren Jensen Rådgivende Ingeniørfirma.
4 - Niras A/S (http://www.niras.dk/) with Friis & Moltke, Henning Larsen Architects, SLA, SINTEF (NO), Sweco (SE), Orbicon Leif Hansen.
5 - CuraVita (http://www.curavita.dk/) with Arkitema, NSW (NO), Hospitalitet (NO), Grontmij Carl Bro, aart a/s, Ove Arup & Partners (UK), Moe & Brødsgaard.

Strange to see Ove Arup & Partners in two of the consortiums, although it's two different divisions. Beside from that it looks like a stong field, but that's probably expected with a project this large. Personally I've never heard of BDP before, seems like a huge company though.

While most focus here at the moment is on Jyske Bank Bank Boxen and DGI Parken, a bunch of other things are going up right now. Here's a little update from the southern part of central Herning.

I've mention it, and the most interesting projects before, and I really think this area will end up quite nice when fully build. Not because all the projects are fantastic, but more because of the location which has "knudmosen" and it's nature directly to the south and just some ~800 meters to the town hall square to the north. The transformation of this old industrial area started some ~8 years ago and now it has reached the final stages. When fully build, it will include some 300-400 homes of all different kinds like rentals, owned, luxury, student, handicapped and elderly homes. 3 projects is going up right now, another should be just around the corner.

First a panorama from the edge of Knudmosen:

And an old map from the localplan:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/ny/knudmosen00.jpg

From left to right on the panorame these are the projects:

1 - Twins. Two 11 storey 36/38 meter buildings with a total of ~61 apartments. First one started construction about a month ago, second should follow soon:

2 - Hus p å Hus. Next to Twins we find the "Hus-på-Hus" project which consist of two attached 9 storey buildings around the same elevator core. An indetical 2nd stage is also in the planning. First stage should go UC within 2010:

Update Knudmosen

First a panorama from the edge of Knudmosen:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/ny/knudmosen01.jpgA little update with some news from this area. They are now doing the foundations for another handfull of buildings here, most on the right side of the panorame above where you see a demolished warehouse. In the last week foundation has been made for two 6 storey building and one 5 storey. They are also making the foundation for stage 2 and 3 of the UC building to the left of the panorama, the new buildings will be located behind the one we see. Here's a scanned rendering (hense the poor quality) of the 6 storey buildings (and more to come behind them). Archiect is Årstiderne:

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/ny/grondahlsvej.jpg

Not too far away, and still on the south side of the railway, another building will go UC in the coming spring. It's the 43 meter tall building at Godsbanevej, just south of the railstation. It'll be 10 floors with a total of 7000 m2 officespace and tenants are found for 5 of the floors until now. The site was sold to the developer on dec. 15. and it was approved back in may. If construction start as planned it will be ready in the fall 2012:

Another little photo update from the "knudmose" area in suothern central Herning. The area really feels like one big construction site, although "only" 3 buildings are actually UC and some 4-5 foundations ready.

First all 3 buildings UC. The first of the two 11 storey "Twins" in the background has reached 8 floors now:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/ny/knudmosen11.jpg

Here a view from east. On the right side you see the single "twin" in the background. To the left of it another 6 buildings between 8 and 11 floors are planned (where we have some old houses today). On the area to the right there'll be a bunch of buildings between 4 and 7 floors. All residential:

And here with my back the the Twin, looking towards the citycenter. The street in the middle, Thrigesvej, will be the central axis of this entire new residential neighborhood once fully completed:

Yeah, nice update with high quality photos. I just wish that the buildings on Thrigesvej would all face the street and would be multifunctional with room for shops etc. in the bottom floor (not necessarily all over, but at least here and there). That would make the area more urban, but unfortunately that just is not the way new areas in Denmark is planned.

mlm
April 12th, 2011, 10:55 AM
^^ Ideally, that would be optimal, but I doubt it would work in reality. This area is less than 1 km from the pedestrian street, which is having a hard time competing with the ever expanding Herning Centret/Bilka area in easten Herning. Many more shops outside these 2 areas are not what the city need at the moment. A Fakta, at the bottom of a residential building, is being planned though, at the very end of Thrigesvej, just across the street of the Twins.

April 12th, 2011, 07:17 PM
^^ Well, it does not have to be a regular shopping street. Just the facades of the buildings facing the street, a super market or two, and maybe a couple of shops/kiosks would make the street feel much more urban.

Today the winner for the new Hospital in Gødstrup just outside Herning was chosen: CuraVita

CuraVita is a Danish/Norwegian corsortie, mainly made for all these new hospitals that are on the way. It's consist of Arkitema Architects K/S, NSW Arkitekter & Planlæggere A/S, AART architects A/S, Grontmij, Moe & Brødsgaard and Hospitalitet.

The hospital will be ~135.000 sqm, cost ~3.15 billion and construction was start summer 2012.

My first impression is pretty good:

The 4 losing projects will be puclished later today, will be exiting to see those too.

EDIT: Here's a PDF with a 5 proposals. Seems like the right winner to me, although the first one also looks interesting: Det nye hospital i Vest (http://www.dnv.rm.dk/files/Hospital/Vest/Administrationen/DNV/Billeder%20-%20Grafik/ID-skilte/Dokumenter/DNV_G%202809.pdf)

I find it difficult to choose a clear winner. They are all good. Though after seeing the original proposal from CuraVita, I think I prefer that one. If I should choose the one I least like then it would be the C. F. Mølle proposal.

The CuraVita proposal before and after alteration looks nothing like each other. Strange they were allowed to alter a competition entry that much.

September 30th, 2011, 12:39 AM
^^ Strange indeed. They were supposed to pick the winner on june 28th, but appearently CuraVita and the White team had the exact same score and therefore were allowed to adjust their proposals and enter a 2nd round of some kind. I don't know the details of a competetion like that, but there's probably clear rules of what to do in a situation like that.

I'm happy they were allowed though, since I find the final CuraVita proposal much better than the first. The choice of materiels seems much warmer and I'm just a sucker for dark bricks like those.

I also find the BDP proposal interesting, although it has it's problems. Seems like it would be quite hard to expand in the future, which is of course very problematic.

It more or less, seems like the high-rises died for this heavily debated new hospital, seeing the final proposals.

And to be honest, out there west of Herning, space is not a problem, so why build high.! Hopefully the people in the whole West-Jutland area, will accept the project, just as much as the forumers here at Skyscrapercity.

^^ Building a hospital tall has nothing to do with lack of space or not, atleast not in Denmark. It's a question about the hospital infrastructure, and if done right, it can be very effective with all the beds on top of everything else. That's also what you see in the winning proposal, although not that tall since it's spread over 4-5 building sections. The tallest part has 10 floor, which probably equals ~40-45 meter.

Two new Herning projects, both for the old folks. A lot of money are being spend these years upgrading the homes for the elderly.

First up was Vesterled (http://www.friis-moltke.dk/siteFM/projectdetail.asp?x=&detail=2250) a few years ago, then Lindegården (http://www.friis-moltke.dk/siteFM/projectdetail.asp?x=&detail=2380) (still ongoing), and now it's time for the next two.

Construction began today for the new Lind Plejecenter, which will have 64 homes and a price of ~120 million kr. Will be completed in the spring 2013. Architects are GPP Arkitekter and Arkitec

Also today, the winner for the new Fuglsang Sø Centret, was announced. This is a new 11.114 sqm, 112 appartment elderly center located at Fuglsang Sø in northern Herning. Constrction will start in the fall and first part will be ready august 2013, the last in february 2014. The pricetag is ~ 230 million kr. The winner was C.F. Møller, unfortunately this is all that has been published until now:

Today, many of the future residents of Fuglsang Sø Centret lives at Nørregades Plejehjem in central Herning. That one will be converted into 98 youth apartments when Fuglsang Sø Centret is completed. Here a rendering of the coming re-contruction (a few months old):

Time for a little update from the residential area facing Knudmosen (last update in post #70).

The first 6 buildings of the current stage has been completed. These 6 buildings are a mix of rentals, owner and elderly appartments, and of the 118 appartments there's only about 10 left.

First of the two twins. The second is not likely to go UC before next year:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/ny/grondahlsvej101.jpg

Here 5 completed buildings + one new UC:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/ny/grondahlsvej102.jpg

Closer view of the 3 similar looking buildings. All 52 appartments are fully sold/rented:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/ny/grondahlsvej102-1.jpg

And here a closer view of the building UC. It's the first out of some 7-8 buildings, which will contain ~85 appartments. This one just has one appartment on each floor and 2-3 identical buildings will be build. Not too crazy about the white concrete facade, but I guess it creates a little variation from the many brick buildings:

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/herningprojects/ny/grondahlsvej103.jpg

And finally 2 renderings of these new ~85 appartments. As you can see, the style from the third photo is continued in these buildings. For some strange reason it looks like these buildings are build in the middle of a forrest, but in reality there'll be other buildings on all sides:

While we're at it, here we have another 3 brand new projects. All within 100 meters of "Torvet".

First up the new Library, which will be moved into this old concrete monster (http://www.herningshuse.dk/bygning.php?id=158) from the 60s. Before that, the building will get a complete renovation. The building and renovation cost the municipality ~93 million. Will be completed in spring 2014:

© Arkitektfirma Kristian H. Nielsen

Next up a little 400 sqm building, directly on Torvet, partly in front of Herning Kirke. There has been a heated debate locally about it, but the site has been waiting for a building since the localplan for the new Torv was made in the early 1990s. Most people just had no idea a building could be build on this site.

Anyway, the building will be home to one of the first of Bang & Olufsens new "Premium Stores", which is a new luxury concept which will also be incorporated in many of their largest stores world wide. B&O plans to use the Herning store as a showroom for many of their Struer visitors. Should be completed in fall this year:

And finally a new Residential / Office building on "Brandstationsgrunden", which has been empty since the firestation moved to the outskirts of Herning some 10 years ago. Will contain 1347 sqm office space, 36 youth appartments, 26 regualar appartments and 101 parking spaces. Will be completed within 1½ - 2 years:

Today "contruction" was started for Hernings newest arrtificial lake, Holing Sø. With it's 45 acres it will be significantly larger than the ~28 acres Fuglsang Sø just on the other side of the road (to the south).

First phase includes 9 acres on the western part and it should be ready next year. I don't know the exact timeframe for the entire lake. The green areas north of the lake is for housing.

I really think this is a great project for Herning. Since Fuglsang Sø was completed some 10 years ago, it has been a huge asset to the city, specielly as a recreational area. This new lake should boost the area even more. It will also offer some new options for lakeview housing here, which hasn't been possible here until now.

^^ It will just be single family houses, as you can see on the render below. The more architectually interesting things are supposed to be over at Fuglsang Sø, although new construction has been on a standstill since the crisis hit. A new 5 storey elderly home is now UC, hopefully some residential buildings are to follow soon.

Back to the houses at the new lake: The municipality has been selling grounds since last fall, but not that many has been sold yet. First ones are the 20-25 to the left on this render, which shows about 1/4 of the total planned houses there. I'm sure they'll start selling more as the lake construction progresses.

I definitely understand the motives behind creating the new area and it itself it is a great idea, but I do feel it is a bit rushed, as the Fuglsang Sø area to me comes across as massively underdeveloped.

mlm
May 3rd, 2013, 03:46 PM
^^ Yes there's surely still a lot of construction to be done at Fuglsang Sø, that was hit hard by the crisis. But the two lake projects are still targeted towards different "customers" with single family houses at Holing Sø and larger developments at Fuglsang Sø.

Another reason why they're starting now is because the sand they dig up will be used for the extension of Vesterholmvej (to the new hospital in Gødstrup), which went under construction a few months ago. The soil will be used for landscaping around the lake itself. When the lake is completed, a whooping 140.000 truckloads has moved 1.400.000 cubic meters of sand and soil.
