shanghai beijing shanghai beijing shanghai shanghaishanghai, shanghai too much in the world. once chinese talk about their hometown is shanghai in english countries, the answers will be modern modern, very modern many times. china is a poor country, only shanghai is modern[secondly beijing probably], shanghai people living well in china. that's very common feel for the foreigners.coz who knows in china, the annual income of shanghai is not the best, the freedom the media the percapita gdp, the social environment, not shanghai. actually i look up a heap of place the economy consists of the most local private companies. this is the advantage shanghai people will never have. shanghai people, dont be arrogant anymore overseas. unstudied people, dont shanghai too much. china still got a lot of place for u discover. they are not bigger than shanghai even though.

Shanghai itself is not overrated on this forum. But it does overshadow other cities in the country causing them to be underrated.

Here's why:
Beijing has international recognisation, but it lacks modernity and it's poorer than shanghai.
Guangzhou and shenzhen has higher standard of living than shanghai and they don't lack modernity, but they lack international recognisation.

By the way, shanghai is not "the city" in china.
1. China's banking capital is in Beijing, all 4 major banks in china are located in beijing.
2. China's media capital is also in Beijing, such as CCTV and many other movie production companies.
3. China's richest large city is shenzhen, richer than shanghai in per capita gdp by 15000CNY
4. China's air hub is not in shanghai, its flagcarrier "air china" is headquatered in beijing.
5. Shanghai is not china's only finanical powerhouse, shenzhen is just as competitive in the financial sector.

The OP is not completely wrong. In terms of modernity and standard of living, shanghai is not any better than the southeastern coast cities. Xiamen, Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, are also very very modern and advanced.

Don't mistakenly believe shanghai's position in china is like bangkok in thailand or kuala lumpur in malaysia, where the two cities are decades ahead other cities in their country

Having come from Shanghai, I can vouch for that it can be too dense, noisy and even dirty compared to some smaller cities.

To an extent that's also true for London in the UK for example.

I agree with everthing you said, except #6. Shanghai has the highest salary compared with large chinese cities, but wenzhou and dongguan has higher salary.
Also, I do not disagree that shanghai is #1 in china for many aspects, I just want to point out that shanghai is not the only advanced city in china. Guangzhou, shenzhen and xiamen are too overlooked by foreigners.
Many foreign people think shanghai in china is like bangkok in thailand, where a rich urban oasis setting amid of poor farmers, which is not true at all. Bangkok's GDP is 10 times (1000%) higher than thailand's second largest city Chiang Mai. Yes, Shanghai has the highest GDP in China, but only 15%-20% higher than the second largest urban centre- beijing.

你说的在大企业里员工的税前收入, 我讲的是城市所有人口的可支配收入. 上海富人多, 可是穷人也比广东城市多,所以整个城市的平均收入应该不如深圳珠海.
