There been a fair bit of prep work in recent weeks. It fills a gap and should add significantly to what will be a very impressive one side of Upper Brook St, as far as the end of the hospital; the borders of Victoria Park.

As an aside for this area, the housing around Victoria Baths is complete and the area feels much improved.

Work begins on new chemical engineering building

28 Jun 2010

The first ground has been broken for a state-of-the-art facility to house the growing chemical engineering school at The University of Manchester.

Staff and students gathered on site earlier this month for the official ground-breaking ceremony on the site of the five-storey, 11,500 square metres, building. The £16m first phase of the new building is due for completion in the autumn of 2011.

Situated on the corner of Booth Street East and Upper Brook Street, this will hold research facilities, teaching laboratories for postgraduates and undergraduates, enquiry-based learning (EBL) facilities and academic offices.

Contractor Galliford Try has started construction of the new 123,500 sq ft Chemical Engineering Building for Manchester University.

The £30m project will be built in two phases and is part of the university's £650m estates redevelopment programme. The £16m first phase of the new building is due for completion in the autumn of 2011 on the corner of Booth Street East and Upper Brook Street.

The chemical engineering department at the university has 650 undergraduates and 130 taught masters students and this number is due to increase.

Prof Mike Sutcliffe, head of the school, said: "As one of a small group of elite chemical engineering departments within the UK, it is vital we have the facilities to match.

"Our broad research base in which engineers and scientists work seamlessly together enables us to study the design, operation and integration of different complex systems - particularly industrial, biological, and instrumentation - and apply chemical engineering in a 21st century context."

The new building was designed by Manchester-based architects Halliday Meecham. The practice has had 30 commissions in four years from Manchester University.

The rest of the project team is made up of quantity surveyors Gleeds, M&E consultants Jacobs Engineering UK, structural engineers WYG Engineering, project managers Davis Langdon, CDM Coordinators KOK and acoustic engineers Sandy Brown.

The steel frame is on it's way up. Once again, I'm going to promise to get some pics, but as has previously been the case they may fail to turn up.

It may not be that exciting, buts gotta be so much better for the city than a 33 floor accomodation block. Got to say the transformation of this part of the city, with all the other man uni buildings and the super hospital are so good for the city in the long run. I just hope the old Umist campus can be retained as some form of knowledge economy asset.
