Pretty decent in comparison to the pea coat I mentioned - $199.

$199 for a coat, wool and cashmere blend, is a bargain. Well done!

Samby, have you been here?

funny you should say that mincy. I drive past that place all the time and seen the signs but never occurred to me. After reading that article the other day I checked out their website as well. The poor bugger is really trying to be different and it's great to see someone to take the initiative but I really doubt he won't be out of business soon. 'Innovative' doesn't seem to work in Perth. Also not helped by his location. The shops next to him have been for lease for ages!
I really hope he succeeds though. Might give it a try today/2moro before it closes down ;)

So where from BartBart. I tried buying a jacket in London last year - H&M, Zara and a number of other places but to be honest all crap (in my price range). I figured buying a summer jacket in the UK would be perfect for Perth winters. This post a good reminder that I'm still in the market for a jacket.

Unlike articles in The Voice, The Guardian Express does hit it now and then re places to eat. Let me know what you think of it ok :)

I like you, Matt. You funny.

I don't think we came to any kind of conclusion when we had the discussion about good places to buy coats last year.

I have problems finding a good quality, good value jacket too.

haha sanj, I laughed on the inside but didn't want to sound my usual cynical self (see I'm trying). As for the texting stuff, these guys are actually doing it better than mini. You can sign up etc thru their website and send an email which would be easier than texting 23 coffee orders. +2 points for trying. -8 points for mentioning melbourne

people shouldnt be given praise for doing the absolute minimum that should be done by everyone but unfortunately we are so used to shit that when someone does the minimum it is somehow good and praise worthy

i've got no problem with paninis, muffins, banana bread etc but is that in any way different to say 100 other cafes in perth? where is this supposed melbourne influence?

ultimately though my problem isnt with the ppl who own this cafe, im glad they're trying something new. it is typical shit community newspaper writing, andrei buters would be proud of it

checked out the little pantry the other day (shenton park). Coffee is very average for my taste but for $2.5 not a bad place to chill out with the paper. They seemed quite friendly and unpretentious.
(For you sanj) There was a lot of hype about these guys ordering their coffee from italy and getting it shipped here quickly blah blah. I say they're getting ripped off, harris coffee from woolies tastes the same.

yeah ive had 3 coffees there, one pretty good and 2 average.

i dont know enough about coffee to really comment on this but it doesnt make sense to me to go to the effort to import coffee and get it airflown etc when u have people like fiori and five senses in perth who seem to do a good job

i suppose it could still be cheaper

Nowhere fancy - Tony Barlow in HarbourTown. My one is around knee length. They had others that were a little longer that were cheaper ($149) because they were pretty much wool (no cashmere) - they are similar in the look of the jacket. I went the cashmere because it is softer and after having worn it a couple of days am very happy with it (warmth, looks, etc).

I'm not saying this is it in your case as the jacket looks like it may be worth that much but it seems that lately with all the sales hypes the RRPs and 'original' prices have become a new ploy to suck people in. I'm seeing this everywhere with BS original prices with supposedly massive discounts. Even the RRPs don't seem to match for the same products between different shops.
One of the biggest cons are the kitchenware (scanpan etc) stuff that are always 40-50% off. Almost up there with carpet people.

I expected the two cakes to be hard the way cake gets when you leave it out for too long but these were soooo soft. The knife slid through them so easily. Very nice and smooth but definitely not something you'd be able to eat by yourself.

I notice this a lot as well. Best thing to do is compare prices online and then in store. Forget how much the discount is and look at what your actually paying.

Yes the name Infinite is good. Did you just answer the question  I still don't know why is Infinity / Infinite funny? I may be missing something, but I just don't get it..

Is the cafe small yet the name makes it sound like it's big or something?
or is the cafe supposed to sound like it will constantly churn out food but really it is open during the day time?

Agree. The cynic tells me RRP are always fake. I do research before buying anything even moderately expensive so I know what I am deciding and know what a decent price is. Another example of the continuous "big discount" is crystalware (like Royal Doultan)

(Which is why the soon-to-be-opened second CBD venue from Bar One owner Steve Scaffidi - in the heritage-listed Newspaper House building - is being eagerly awaited. Scheduled to open in November, the new Scaffidi venture is the worst kept secret in Perth. It's going to be upmarket, stylish and, as Scaffidi puts it, "adult" with proper linen, glassware and a big bucks fitout).

lulz @ mota aloo. was that you who put it in the tags?

glad u liked it, both my dad and i are big fans of it. did you have the iced lemon tea? im guessing probably not as it isnt the weather for it but they do the best iced lemon tea that ive had in perth.

i havent been online much as i still dont have the internet at home 2 weeks after moving and ive been busy at work (am still here which is extremely gay)

foodwise - went to estia on beaufort st, inglewood first for breakfast and then for a quick dinner.

is a new greek place, prices pretty reasonable, service a bit slow, food mostly quite tasty without being amazing.

breakfast is pretty good value, 4 of us ate including coffees etc and it cost me a touch over $15 a head from memory. i had a grecian baked beans with fish and poached egg and it was really nice but you got a bit sick of it after a while. a friend had a spinach and cheese filled pastry (different to a spanakopita though) and it was pretty good, i enjoyed the bit i tried

dinner - entrees were better than mains, which were a little pedestrian

also had breakfast at harvest on the weekend, had the chorizo spiced bean stew with goats labna, very nice but a bit too rich towards the end (portion was a touch too big, certainly nothing to complain about). their side order of potatoes was pretty average, normally really good.

usual things i bitch about with harvest though, very expensive sides (for the amount given) and expensive juice ($8 for apple juice).

lastly - new place (tina's place) opened up in south perth offering predominantly takeaway malay food, stuff like lamb and chicken biryani, mee rebus, mee siam, nasi lemak etc. they've only been open 4 days, i had the mee rebus for lunch and biryani for dinner. definitely recommend them both, very good value for $8,50 and pretty damn tasty. rice couldve been better for the biryani but the chicken was beautiful. It is in the carpark next to the pizza express place is, where the kebab store used to be. note - mee rebus might not be for everyone but im fairly confident most people would enjoy the biryani, provided you enjoy a bit of spice.

oh yeah, had the burrata with some jamon i bought recently, god damn it was amazing.

edit - had the corn chowder from flying taco on sunday (they've now sold out), very very good soup. highly recommend both this as well as the tortilla soup they had 3 weeks or so ago. they tend to alternate specials (ie one week a burrito special then a soup special the following week) so it is worth calling them to find out when they'll have soup. I ended up calling up 4 times before having luck but it was worth it, especially in this weather.

Yes. That Bart, he started it though. I wasn't even sure what it meant, it just came from a news item about that chubby cricketer. Do you speak Hindi or did you google it?

glad u liked it, both my dad and i are big fans of it. did you have the iced lemon tea? im guessing probably not as it isnt the weather for it but they do the best iced lemon tea that ive had in perth.

.

I was wondering where you'd got to.

How do they get the pork like that, they must cook it very slowly for a very long time. My brother had the sambal fish and that was good too. It is a huge menu. Do they add sugar to the iced lemon tea? I generally don't order that type of thing because they are usually hideously sweet. I saw the coconut milk milkshake there too, which was tempting, but didn't go for that either, for the same reason.

Sanj
June 15th, 2010, 06:44 PM
Yeah the pork is intriguing cos the bones/tendons are beautifully soft and almost gelatinous but the meat hasn't gone to mush like u'd sort of expect.

There is sugar syrup in the ice lemon tea but I think toto has the balance of tart from lemon and sweet just right.

Speaking of tart and sweet combo, sherbet has been doing a passionfruit and lemon sour cream cake which is out of this world. Up there with the best I've hsd from them and I think just the sort of thing you'd like. Was going to msg you when to tell you but got distracted and forgot. No icing (although there is a passionfruit glaze), only 1 layer but it is a beautifully made simple cake

I tried some Beef tendon somewhere in the world in the last month or so... gotta say, I am not a fan. Consistency was almost exactly like silicon. Is that normal sank?

Been having some classic Turkish food over the last few days, Lamacun, Pide, and of course Turkish Delight of many flavours (they just call it Delight here), also some amazing baclava.

Cherries are in season, a kilo we bought yesterday was less than $2 Australian, and thats in the heart of the city (Istanbul).

Mind you, I fell off the wagon and had Sanj's soft bone pork noodle soup tonight at Toto's for dinner. Gosh that man has an uncanny eye, it was very nice.

Nah - quite the opposite (re: first question). More I just got into a habit of eating and drinking rubbish - esp. since my exercise is still limited due to the knee surgery/recovery that still has just over 2 months to go. And I could probably have lost 4/5 kg from when I first started 3 weeks ago.

btw - I didn't know what the tag meant 'til it was discussed just now - so I looked it up. Very cleaver* Sanj.

* as some would say

btw2 - I am surprised your 2nd last sentence hasn't been selectively quoted in deranged signature yet.

Midland, Armadale next for late shop hours
DANIEL MERCER, The West Australian June 16, 2010, 10:34 am

Midland and Armadale will be rezoned as tourism precincts as part of the State Government's push to deregulate shopping hours.

Premier Colin Barnett this morning said Commerce Minister Bill Marmion would introduce legislation into Parliament this week to allow businesses in the City of Swan and City of Armadale to trade late on weeknights and on Sundays.

It follows similar moves to expand existing tourism precincts in Perth and Fremantle to neighbouring suburbs such as Subiaco, Mt Lawley, West Perth, North Perth, South Perth and Victoria Park.

A bid to extend trading hours in Joondalup is also before Parliament, with Mr Barnett saying it would be passed "shortly".

According to Mr Barnett, the new arrangements had strong support from the affected local governments and retailers and could be in place by Christmas.

"I know there will be people now in Armadale and Midland running around their kitchen dancing and cheering - they will be very, very happy," he told ABC radio.

"That is what people want: they want the choice, they want to be able to shop at night after work because people now shop frequently during the week."

Responding to criticism that the State Government was introducing extended trading "by stealth", the Premier tried to apportion the blame to the Opposition.

"This is not the perfect way," he said.

"My preference and the Government's preference was to have weeknight shopping introduced across Perth and then we would look at the issue of Sunday trading across Perth on an equal basis for every householder and every shop keeper.

"The Labor Party opposed that so we have had to do it in a slightly piece-meal way.

"But the response is people are voting with their feet."

Weekend trading extended to Midland, Armadale
Joe Spagnolo, political reporter
From: PerthNow June 16, 2010 9:37AM

MIDLAND and Armadale are set to become tourism shopping precincts.

The Barnett government is expected to announce as early as today plans to add Midland and Armadale to a growing number of tourism shopping precincts in Perth, which allows shops to open to 9pm on week days and from 11am to 5pm on Sundays.

The Perth central business district and Fremantle are already designated as tourism shopping precincts, and Joondalup is also earmarked for extended shopping hours.

Premier Colin Barnett has decided to introduce the tourism shopping precincts after Labor and the National party opposed his plan for 9pm weeknight trading throughout the whole metropolitan area.

Labor is sticking to it's 2008 state election policy, which said it would extend weeknight trading until 7pm and back the tourism shopping precincts in Armadale, Joondalup and Midland.

Mr Barnett has indicated he will move towards 7 day trading throughout Perth at the next election.

In the meantime, he will extend shopping hours in Perth by introducing tourism shopping precincts, as long as local government authorities agree to the changes.

LOL. They will just keep introducing new tourism zones until it becomes unfair to those outside of the zone. Surely Joondalup wont be far away, then they will extend it to the whole City of Joondalup and so forth.

Perth light drives $10m restaurant bid

If you've got what it takes to be a "custodian of the Rockpool ethos", then Neil Perry has a job for you.

Perry - whose Rockpool restaurants in Sydney and Melbourne are unquestionably Australia's most prominent - yesterday officially announced his plans to open a $10 million Rockpool Bar & Grill at Burswood Resort complex in January.

And it won't be a scaled down version. Perry is sparing no expense or effort.

"At any one time we'll have five tonnes of specially grown and butchered meat hanging in our purpose-built ageing rooms at Burswood," he said. "You'll be able to buy a $29 aged, grain fed rump, a $110 aged Wagyu and a range of cuts in between."

"We'll be hiring 100 staff and one very special local who'll be our restaurant manager - someone who embodies the Rockpool ideals; a custodian of our brand," Perry said.

With a weekly wages bill of nearly $100,000 Perry will have to sell a lot of beef to break even. But he remains undaunted at the magnitude of the project, despite it being Perth's largest and most expensive restaurant to date.

"We'll seat 180 in the restaurant and another 60 in the bar," Perry said.

"There'll be a private dining room for ten and an open kitchen, crowned with a massive nickel canopy."

Construction begins next month and be finished about Christmas.

In the meantime Perry will begin the search for the best WA producers to supply produce to his exacting standards.

"We'll be bringing in our specially aged Cape Grim beef from Tasmania but we're also looking for locally grown yearling beef, pork, lamb and poultry," he said.

Sourcing great produce is a task he clearly relishes.

"I'll be back soon to travel around the regions meeting growers and producers," he said.

And the Rockpool experience?

"Hopefully people will have a very grand experience when they come to Rockpool."

"Although it will be embodied with the Rockpool DNA, Rockpool Perth will be different," Perry said.

"Melbourne has a sort of darker, moodier New York steakhouse look. But we love the light in Perth and it's driven our design - a lighter, fresher, airier approach."

I love the sweet and tart combo too, that sounds very good with the cream as well. I actually prefer the syrup toppings, especially when they put it on when the cake is warm and it soaks into the crevices. Lucky you didn't let me know though, no cake for me until my pants fit. It's a torment, living so close to a nice cake shop.

Art makes a retail transition
by Inside Retailing Online on June 16, 2010

One of Perth’s most prestigious shop fronts will be transformed into an artist’s studio this week.

Landscape painter Jacinda Bayne will relocate her studio to a vacant boutique on the podium level of enex100 from June 18.

Shoppers will be able to watch Bayne work on her latest collection, a series of bold landscape works inspired by the evocative beauty of the Pilbara.

Bayne said she was excited at the prospect of opening her practice up to the public and sharing the creative process with a wide audience.

Her studio will be located next door to Dangerfield.

Was at Subi today and ended up going to FAB. The chicken burger was really nice. Large portion with a pretty good relish. They've changed the bread to a more Brioche like really soft bun. Normally not a huge fan but this was very tasty and morish. Good value for $9.50. They even had a burger/chips/coke lunchtime special for $9.95 which is unheard of in Perth! Probably going out of business.

The new IGA there looks alright. It has a 'fresh provisions' feel and not suprisingly gouging on prices. $15/kilo for mushrooms!!

After reading all the hype about 'Mooba' down the road I figured I'd try it out. Very disappointed. The place is ok and comfortable, the service cold and the coffee very average. They use 5 senses but can't make it for shit. The long black was scorching hot, weak and no crema. Not to mention the stupid cups; couldn't get my finger through the handle (my fingers aren't that chubby!!). Don't think I'd be rushing back.

Have jus burgers changed their Gromit burger offering? I recommended it to a friend last time we were there - she didnt want to eat much - but when it arrived it looked wayyy smaller than it used to be. I felt like a jerk for suggesting it, and she was taken aback by how small it was too...

Either that or the contrast with my regular burger just made it look extra small by comparison... But I don't know. They also didn't oil the bun. The place can be frustratingly inconsistent sometimes.

Sanj

samboy
June 20th, 2010, 05:04 AM
it's been inconsistent from day 1. They've changed items on the menu, with or without updating the menu sometimes. Oil on the bun is only there 60% of the time. Their garlic and herb chicken has neither (unless my tastebuds are completely shot). It doesn't matter though as they're always packed and the public is starved for mediocrity. So F U everyone!
PS: No adult should be ordering a grommit anyway ;)

I do agree that jus can sometimes be inconsistent but I think it's still very good the vast majority of the time. Grilld is more consistent but it is consistently goodish without ever being amazing. I'm happy to cop the occasional low for the regularly higher highs at jus vs grilld or flipside

I hadn't realised there was a bar upstairs in addition to the garden. It was empty when we checked it out (aside from someone watering the plants), but looked like it had potential. Does it get busy on weekdays? What about evenings?

Apple store to open in Perth
MICHAEL HOPKIN, The West Australian June 22, 2010, 6:56 am

For Apple's army of acolytes, the wait is almost over. The computer giant yesterday confirmed that its long-awaited Perth retail store will open its doors at 9am on Saturday.

The opening of the store, at 790 Hay Street, will end months of speculation over when Apple's keenly-anticipated WA shop would make its debut. Apple was tight-lipped about its plans until yesterday, with the premises still covered by black hoardings. Networking sites buzzed with rumours over when Perth shoppers would be able to get their hands on products such as the latest Mac computers and iPods, direct from the inventors.

The Perth store, the eighth Apple store in Australia, will have the same features that have proved successful throughout the world. It will be equipped with a "genius bar", which aims to troubleshoot customers' problems with their computers, iPods or other gadgets. It will also offer one-to-one tutorials, which pledge to help customers learn anything from how to set up an email account to how to edit a movie on Apple products. The sessions are priced at $129 for a year, which allows for up to 26 visits.

The store will also do free demonstrations of its latest sought-after gadget, the iPad.

CBD surge in global brands
ADRIAN WATSON, The West Australian June 23, 2010, 7:03 am

http://l.yimg.com/ea/img/-/100623/a_190707busgucci3-1622h25.jpg

The boom in high-profile brands setting up flagship stores in Perth's central business district is changing the dynamics of shopping in the city, according to expanding retail property leasing agent Metier.

In the past five years there has been a surge in exclusive international fashion brands opening stores in Perth's CBD, particularly along King Street and the west end of Hay Street, with elite Australian brands joining the trend.

International fashion outlets Burberry and Emporio Armani have been the latest addition to the long list, which includes Gucci, Hugo Boss, Kailis and Tiffany & Co.

Apple is opening a store at 400 Hay Street, west of the mall, on Saturday and Prada is believed to be planning to open a store on King Street at the corner of Hay Street.

Metier associate director Ben Tana said retail confidence in Perth had been growing since the start of the year and the surge in flagship stores was creating a culture of high-profile shopping in certain parts of the CBD.

"If you look along from Milligan to William (streets) on Hay Street you can see a massive change," he said. "People are saying 'we need to be in the city'."

He said internationally acclaimed Australian fashion label Sass & Bide - which opened its King Street store last month - was an example of "Perth's ability to sustain top-tier retail".

Sass & Bide chief executive David Briskin said the decision on where to open its flagship store had been influenced by the surrounding outlets.

"We're very happy to have established our brand presence in Perth via the new King Street store," he said. "The location and proximity to other high-end fashion labels along King and its adjoining streets added great weight to our decision."

Where pedestrians go in the CBD has also been changing. A survey released by the City of Perth, the Public Life Survey, focused on malls and surrounding areas and showed foot traffic had migrated north to Murray Street and west to William Street.

Pedestrian traffic along the Murray Street mall and on William Street between Hay Street and Murray Street had increased by more than 25 per cent from 1993 to 2009 and there had been a corresponding fall of 25 per cent along Hay Street mall, the report said.

Just Group national leasing executive Megan Wilkins, who worked on the re-opening of Dotti's store in the city, said the fashion outlet had migrated from the eastern end of the CBD to the western side of Murray Street mall because of the increased foot traffic.

"Our new flagship location on Murray Street mall provided the right opportunity for the brand to reinstate itself in the CBD because the location was the right fit for the direction Dotti intends to take," she said. "The Just Group has seen an increase in pedestrian traffic and general activity at the western end of Murray Street mall."

The survey found the Perth Underground train station had been a major factor behind the shift and Mr Tana said other projects, including the Wesley Quarter, one40william and Raine Square, would encourage further growth at the western end. "We believe that the trend of multi-brand owners, national and international brands looking to refresh their CBD exposure through a shift in location or expansion will continue with new retail projects such as Raine Square enjoying renewed interest," he said.

Sunday trading detail needs work: Ripper
ROBERT TAYLOR, STATE POLITICAL EDITOR and AAP, The West Australian June 23, 2010, 9:15 am

Opposition Leader Eric Ripper has conceded that the "detail has to be worked out" over a confusing deal etched with the Government for limited retail trading on Sundays, as the business lobby stepped into the debate this morning to say it "would not rest" until shops across Perth could open when they wanted to.

The Labor and Liberal parties struck a deal yesterday to extend retail trading hours to 9pm Monday to Friday across the metropolitan area and to white goods stores such as Harvey Norman on Sundays, sparking fury over the "confusing" proposal.

After months of talks with the Liberals, Labor dumped its commitment to its 2008 election policy of 7pm closing time on weeknights yesterday to embrace Colin Barnett's favoured 9pm position.

In return, the Premier promised to establish a small business commissioner, a register of shopping centre leases and Sunday trading for "durable consumer goods".

But the conditions of the deal have attracted fire this morning.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry argues that all retailers should be allowed to trade on Sundays, not just white goods stores.

In a statement chamber chief executive James Pearson asked why WA politicians remained afraid of giving Perth people the Sunday trading they wanted.

"The reform, which only allows shops to open on a Sunday if they sell durable consumer goods is a dog's breakfast, creating confusion for retailers and shoppers as to what they can sell and buy on Sundays," he said.

Mr Pearson said there was no good reason for WA politicians to stand in the way of Sunday trading and the chamber would not rest until shops across Perth could open when they wanted to.

Earlier Mr Ripper admitted that the details of the deal needed work.

"The detail has to be worked out, we have an in principle deal with the Government, we need to recognise that there is a lot of work to be done here," Mr Ripper told 6PR this morning.

Mr Ripper said he had "copped a lot of criticism" for not previously supporting Colin Barnett's move to deregulate shopping hours, but had gauged public opinion from the results of a 2005 referendum on shopping hours.

"I take that referendum seriously and that's why I've been cautious on trading hours, I didn't immediately jump to support Colin Barnett's 9 o'clock, I have copped a lot of criticism for not joining that bandwagon but the reason we didn't immediately is precisely because of that referendum," Mr Ripper said.

"That's why I won’t support 24-7 deregulation."

Rather than being a simple move towards deregulated shopping, the long-running saga took another twist yesterday when Mr Ripper said the ALP would vote today with the Nationals and Greens to return expanded special trading precincts in Perth and Fremantle to the pre-Christmas boundaries.

Labor would support today’s disallowance motion because it had legal advice that the use of regulation to expand the Perth and Fremantle tourism precincts was illegal.

That decision means businesses which have been able to trade on Sunday and weeknights since Christmas under the expanded precincts will shut on Sundays until the new legislation can pass in the spring parliamentary session.

"There are people who have quit their jobs to go and work for people like the Good Guys and Harvey Norman in O’Connor who have for the past four months been trading seven days a week," Jandakot Liberal MLA Joe Francis said.

"Petty politics is going to mean these people are going to get laid off if this disallowance goes through because they used to be able to trade on a Sunday and now they won’t be able to trade on a Sunday until the new law comes in. It’s madness."

The mayors of South Perth and Subiaco also said Labor's decision to support the disallowance motion would cause massive disruption to businesses which had become used to opening on Sundays.

But Mr Ripper said the ALP could not as a responsible Opposition support an illegal act by the Government.

A spokesman for Coles said the company would employ 300 more full-time, part-time and casual staff in the metropolitan area as a result of the extended trading deal.

But IGA's John Cummings said the expanded tourism precincts had not delivered benefits to shoppers or retailers and it was hard to see what extending the regime across the metropolitan area would achieve.

Yep John Cummings is a tool and is just fighting for his pathetic existence as an unwarranted big player in the WA grocery market. I love it how he is speaking on behalf of shoppers in the last paragraph in the above article. Pretty sure I am a shopper and since the expanded tourism precinct bill have been on average shopping at my local Wollworths twice each week between 6pm and 9pm and do my large weekly shop on a Sunday. Pretty sure I'm better off now that I don't have to pay more for inferior product at IGA on weeknights and venture into the city for my weekly shop on a Sunday.

http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/wa/7451449/retail-trading-disallowed/

Retailers in the expanded Perth and Fremantle tourism precincts won a last minute reprieve last night when the State Labor Party sided with the Liberals to defer a parliamentary vote that would have seen them banned from Sunday trading.

In a deal hammered out just hours before the so-called disallowance motion to wind back the Fremantle and Perth special trading precincts was due to be considered in the Upper House, Labor agreed to defer the vote after the Government said legislation to establish a tourism precinct at Joondalup would clear up any legal concerns the ALP had.

it's been inconsistent from day 1.

Just saw this.

They may be inconsistent now and then, I myself have experienced it a couple times. But I'm more than happy to put up with these inconsistencies because their burgers are the best in town, hands down. They are anything but mediocre. Really Samby, don't kill my love for you :tongue2:

Check out the bar 'Robot' down Bligh Place. You'll like it given the whole Japanese pop culture theme they have going on. One of my fave bars in Melb. Also get some mulled wine from Section 8 down Tattersalls Lane (there is a dirt cheap not half bad (but nothing special) Chinese place next door for food), and check out the $4 pizzas at Lucky Coq on Chapel Street.

Brother Baba Budan is my favourite coffee place ever (359 Litte Bourke Street), and you can't go past Brunetti on Faraday Street in Carlton (just off Lygon), for some of the best cakes anywhere in the world imho.

Supposedly the wagyu beef burger at Rockpool Bar & Grill on Southbank is supposed to be amazing, but I haven't tried it.

yeah I don't think Jus is opening up on william, they'll be in freo soon.

Contrary to popular belief I don't think flipside is that great but I definitely prefer their bread. More importantly as a business they have shown more humility and are more grounded than jus which is somewhat following (slowly) the perth tradition of believing in their own hype. My opinion anyway and I'm quite weird about the criteria I use to choose establishments to spend my money at.

Its Branded Burgers. In the place right next to the Piazza with the mural of the Swan on the side wall - used to be a fish restaraunt but that didn't last long.

Can't see these lasting either - place is far too big to just be a burger joint... unless they are amazing.... which by all reports, and looking in, they do not appear to be.

Ok. I went to check it out at lunchtime and it wasn't too bad. About on par with Fab Burgers, maybe a tiny bit better.

The bun is definitely reminiscent of the supermarket buns but I prefer it to the buns at Grill'd.

I got the Veggie Delight burger, chips and coke for $20.50. Monster is better value as you get the same deal for $14/$15 and their burgers are slightly bigger.

The burger was pretty tasty but needed a touch more aioli/mayo.

Chips were soggy and sprinkled with oregano which made me think of the oregano fiasco at Grill'd. But these weren't as OTT.

Apparently their 'thing' is that they do 18 different burgers. Fitout hasn't changed and place was empty bar one table.

Overall, wasn't too bad but for a burger that's just as tasty and of better value, I'll stick with Monster.

Jus > Monster > Fab/Branded > Flipside/Grill'd

Funnily enough I was thinking about this earlier (I know it's pathetic) and I think one of the reasons for the discrepancy is because we tend to order different items on the menu. I almost exclusively order chicken burgers and not a fan of mayo. I'm assuming most others would be ordering beef (vego in mincy's case).
e.g Jus has a habit of not resting the chickens (probably because they're bloody busy) which makes the buns quite soggy.
Anyway a few years ago we wouldn't even be having this discussion in Perth so it's all good.

PS: Mincy I agree with you. The buns at Grill'd are pretty average. Tastes like 2 day old bread. I can't remember whether they used the same one in Melbourne. Need to check it out next time I'm there. Oh and that branded burger joint will be out of business in less than 6months.

More than 500 people braved the coldest night of the year to be among the first to walk through the doors of the new Perth Apple Store this morning.

As the temperature plunged to a freezing -0.6C in the city about 7.30am, Apple enthusiasts sat excitedly outside the Hay Street store waiting to check out new offerings, including the iPad, and the sleek interior of the store.

By noon, more than 800 had visited the store.

View the picture gallery (http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/galleries/a/-/article/7467450/image/1/apple-store-opens/)

Yagan Kiely, 21, was the first to queue at 8 o'clock last night and said despite the cold it was definitely worth the wait.

"It was just one of those things you have to be at," he said.

His mother, Marian Kiely, joined the queue at 5.10am but said she would not be buying anything today. "I have it all," she said.

About 80 Apple staff cheered and chanted with the crowd for about 10 minutes leading up to the official opening, hyping up the crowd before they flooded the store.

The first people through the door received high-fives and backslaps from staff.

The queue of waiting customers stretched along Hay Street and into King Street and, at 10am, customers were still waiting to get a glimpse of Apple gadgets on offer.

http://l.yimg.com/ea/img/-/100626/260610genapple10-162b329.jpg The long queue in Hay Street.

The Apple Store lets users browse the web, read and send email, view and share photos, watch videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and more.

Customers experienced Apple's entire product line hands-on including the updated Mac mini, MacBook and MacBook Pro with the new NVIDIA processor and the popular iPod touch and iPhone 3GS with access to more than 225,000 apps offered on the App Store.

yet another example where no effort is put into making something slightly special because there's no need. Perth will accept anything mediocre with a 'better than nothing' attitude.

The only good thing to come out of this is the fact that it will attract more people to the area which is typically lifeless on the weekends. They also open until 8PM on weeknights.

I'm hoping the back will be something other than a loading dock.

Come on guys, I think you are being a bit harsh about the Apple Store.

Sure its not nearly as impressive as the Sydney store, nor does it have the glass roof & trees like Bondi, but I think our store has something much more important - CHARACTER!!
And at least we have a stand-alone (dare I say 'flagship') CBD store, and not a shitty one in a shopping mall like Vic/QLD.

Apple took a very run-down heritage building - retained and restored the heritage facade and built a modern store front within - and I think they complement each other beautifully.

I think Apple should be commended for not taking the easy route of finding a blank site and building a stock-standard glass & aluminium box. They gave Perth a wonderful and unique store and have hopefully revitalised a pretty average part of town.

There is a US based site that is full of info/news about Apple Retail Stores - ifoapplestore.com and they ran a story about the Perth store. Somebody (presumably American) posted a comment about the story and this is what they said:

"What a beautiful facade! Famous for communicating with the US Astronauts, the Perthians will now have the latest gadgets! That is what I call a beautiful Historic Storefront. Georgetown city planners take note! This is a storefront worth saving!"

Oh and I just love this pic taken by Simon Blears:

That render makes it look like a fully blown road out the back. But thanks for the info PG. Although the drainage down the centre of the pavement should make it obvious that it is a laneway.

Pics on Monday.

Good to hear you had a good experience there. As our hindu friend mentioned, I wasn't impressed with the place. Remind me, are they the ones with the "borat" burger, and the menu that looks like it was printed with the inkjet round back?

If the place was half the size, or smaller, then the ambiance of the place... well... the place would actually have some ambiance. Mins, did you have to wait long for your pretend burger? I remember mine took a pretty long while, which made me even more cynical about the place.

In other news, finally got a chance to go to pata negra last week, and even though it was about as unkosher is a place can get, fuck is the place nice. Dropped a fair bit of scratch at the place, but on the whole, it was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. Going again in the coming week, so I'll try to sneak some photos then.

On the flipside, had coffee this morning with a friend at Lincolns in Highgate. Ehh.

The sales staff have these combination iPod touches with a case on it which includes a barcode scanner and a card reader. The counters are only necessary if you're paying cash.

Not sure if they have a Borat burger as I zoomed straight in on the vegie options. Menus were ok, pretty standard as other places around.

It's the chicken scrawl all over the windows in pink and white that gets to me, ugh.

And I wouldn't say it was a 'good' experience. Good is giving them too much. Jus is good.

The guy said 10 mins. It came out in about 15. How long did yours take?

Here it is:

Speaking of having to wait a long time for a burger, we were waiting about 45mins (in the cold) for a table last Friday at Jus. Ugh. It's a good thing the burger is worth it.

Had a Mocha from Milk and Honey Friday and today.

Fridays Mocha was great and up there with the best, todays was very average but not the worst I've had.

Is consistency really that much to ask for?

Also, if anyone ever complains there is no where to park in the city I'll scream. At around 8:45 Friday and today I parked in the cultural centre car park and it was almost empty both times. Just a 5 minute walk from the city.

Had the haloumi burger from Monster for lunch today.

Was pretty tasty - there's something about that mayo they use - but I still prefer the falafel feeder. Couldn't eat all of it cos the haloumi got too strong after a while. Not a big cheese person, mind you. You'd probably like it though, Sank.

Haloumi ftw!

Worst 'restaurant' experience for me was at the Brisbane. Service was so shocking, rude and dismissive that I ended up walking out. Went to the Queens instead and had a great pub meal with great service.

Edit: Just behind that incident was the King Street Cafe. Again, service was not only non-existent, but they seemed to be going out of their way to be rude. Funnily enough a week later they got panned in the West for giving the reviewer almost the same experience that they gave me.

Stephen Scaffidi to open new bar and grill

PERTH restaurateur Stephen Scaffidi (who launched Subiaco's landmark Alto and now runs the CBD's acclaimed Bar One) isn't going to let Neil Perry at Burswood hog the west's grill limelight.

Scaffidi is developing a new CBD site for Sentinel Bar and Grill, due to open in November at the corner of William Street and St Georges Terrace.

Perry and Crown have some lavish plans for a new Rockpool Bar and Grill in Perth to open next year. Scaffidi, however, will get to market first. "Sentinel is a mix of traditional French bistro cooking and modern American grill house flavours tailored to the rhythm of Perth's CBD style," the restaurateur says.

Designed by Perth's Taylor Robinson Architects (Must Winebar, The Brisbane Hotel), Sentinel will include three dining areas linked by a bar. Scaffidi is scouting for a head chef. Stay tuned.

G'day guys. Just thought I'd touch base from Sydney!

First of all - food is dirt cheap compared to Perth. Excellent coffee at places like Mecca and campos are $2.80. In newtown where I live there are so many restaurants with mains under 15 bucks. So many pubs do $7 steak or cheap pub meals. Groceries seem cheaper too!

I'm working at a cafe called Le Monde in foveaux st. Really reminds me of Sayers. Possibly cos I'm working with 5 senses over here. Nice small place away from the main crowds. Great food, terrific coffee. We are running 3 single origins as clovers and one as espresso, plus a $25 brekky degustation on fri and sat. It's amazing. If you're in town make sure you come say hi!

have heard mostly good things about bouchon bistro in wembley on cambridge st opposite the wembley food court which incidentally has easily the best fried kway teow in perth (malaysian stall only, dont touch the singaporean one)

also, if youre looking for bistro-ey food maybe check out george st bistro in east freo? have only been once for a degustation dinner but i had a really good meal and remember the chef being really nice as well. from memory the menu is similar to galileo in that it is simple rustic european food (not exclusively french though)

lastly chez pierre in nedlands has some pretty good value deals at the moment, 3 course lunch for $42 or 5 course dinner for $55. i was checking up on it recently, menus etc available on their website. ive been twice and enjoyed both visits, food is pretty good without being spectacular but i suppose it isnt trying to be spectacular. i think it would probably hit the mark for what you're looking for.

in my opinion there is NOTHING in perth for non asian food that is as good value as galileo although the prophet probably comes close considering how good and cheap it manages to be at the same time. went to galileo last week, co owner is off as she has just had a baby, head waiter had hurt himself so wasnt in and still no complaints. amazingly consistent (have been twice since you had the stupidly long wait for your meal and both times didnt have to wait too long so im hoping it was an anomaly)

Considering the prices perhaps the poor should not be buying this stuff (thanks to credit they do of course) but I agree with you that in terms of concept and what it will do the area it's very good. I just don't like the mediocre (imo) interior.
