Nate Von Longneck II September 30th, 2010, 03:45 PM Thanks mate. I'll keep it in mind for sure. Can't believe they aren't open Saturdays.
They will be. They have great coffee, nice food, but in their own words "we don't know how to run two businesses at once".
Easing themselves in, and it seems to be working, they are getting busier and busier on word-of-mouth.

Thats good to hear. I have a lot of respect for people who admit their limits or better yet work within their limits.
samboy September 30th, 2010, 03:49 PM so where exactly is this small willy place on william st? The dancing goat has pretty good coffee and fruit toast so keen to check this place out too.
Sanj September 30th, 2010, 03:52 PM where that terrible tiny italian place used to be, next to gingers garage/burlesque lounge
Nate Von Longneck II September 30th, 2010, 03:54 PM It still says "Il Vero Gusto" on the front.
Opposite Outre.
samboy September 30th, 2010, 03:58 PM ah thanks chaps. I've walked past it a million times and didn't realise it had changed.

WA Independent Grocers Association president John Cummings, a critic of weeknight trading reforms, today called the changes "the Coles legislation".
"The only stores that are going to be open are Coles and Woolworths," Mr Cummings said.
"If you look at shops in places like Perth, Subiaco and Fremantle, which have been able to trade until 9pm on weeknights since December 1, only Coles and Woolworths are open late, so if it doesn't work in Fremantle why will it work in Morley?"
"I would have thought the main reason why people in WA have a problem with the extended trading hours is that the big get bigger and the small get smaller."
Kelli October 1st, 2010, 02:40 AM I have a lot of respect for people who admit their limits or better yet work within their limits.
I agree with that sentiment, that is at the crux of a lot of problems. It is the reason I've gone out on my own work-wise, to be able to make the decision to do a couple of things well rather than get caught up in the industry standard of doing a hundred things badly.

miensie October 1st, 2010, 03:45 AM Huh? $19 for lasagne is pretty good in my opinion.
I've eaten in Sydney many, many times and it's a matter of knowing where to go. Some places are shocking and some are really good value for money and really tasty.
Best lasagne? The one at Springwood which was $23 from memory. Fantastic. Worth traveling all that way for.

Is my dream. I will go out on my own one day (have a few good workable ideas already) simply so I can focus on what I do well instead of being continually hassled for what I do badly or be expected to be an imposter.

BartBart October 3rd, 2010, 08:22 AM Ok - my sister's birthday in about 3 weeks (coming over from Melbourne where she's been for 10 months). Looking at where to go. Any suggestions?
At the moment, possibles are:
The Quarter
The Greenhouse
Soda Cafe
(Hard to get in to Galileo's that w/e)
Andaluz

what night? i would stay away from andaluz on a friday night, it is stupidly busy
how many people, what sort of food does she like, does it have to be fancyish, budget etc?
is galileo really booked 3 weekends from now?
BartBart October 3rd, 2010, 08:38 AM ^^ Sat preferable or Sunday. Galileo's is meant to be booked for a function (I think it is the Sat). Not too fussed on the budget - probably not Frasers, etc. level - more casual, I guess. I mentioned The Greenhouse, since we are going to The Quarter the week before for one of my brother's birthday. Type of food doesn't really matter.
Dilaz89 October 3rd, 2010, 10:07 AM Go the quarter. You won't regret it. Can't say the same for greenhouse which is hit and miss IMO
Sanj October 4th, 2010, 04:18 AM has anyone been to that newish korean bbq place on beaufort st just down the road from the court?
i walked by on the weekend and popped in to have a look, definitely looks promising. pretty small menu, effectively 3-4 each pork or beef bbq options and i think maybe another 8 dishes but that's it.
also, kitchen is open til 11pm weekdays and 12am weekends which is always nice. was full of azns too which is always a good sign
crave October 4th, 2010, 04:33 AM ^^ i think i saw that place, was good to see other shops open up... i'd like to see beaufort st, northbridge end start to hot up as an alternative strip...
:>

It does look pretty good in there, The smell when I went past was intoxicating and very inviting!!

usual pissy deal... start up in mt lawley with leisurely cocktails/drinks in a couple of bars then make your way down beaufort street trashier and trashier, as you walk your way down and end up with stank ass moves at ambar... :)
miensie October 4th, 2010, 04:57 AM There is also a Korean Bubulgi place opening on Hay St next to The Golden Hay. They're still applying for their liquor licence though. Used to be a bike shop a couple years ago.

jonwil October 4th, 2010, 05:31 AM The government has released the discussion paper on Sunday trading:
http://www.commerce.wa.gov.au/ConsumerProtection//PDF/Publications/Durable_goods_issues_paper_WEB.pdf
Interesting. Having read the paper, I think the best answer is to say "Any retail store that devotes more than x% of floor/shelf space to selling consumer durables gets to open on a Sunday"
The actual definition of "consumer durables" I think will be the hard part (and likely subject to lobbying/submissions from all sides of the debate)
Personally I wish our government would stop pandering to the vested interests and just allow across the board Sunday trading for every single retailer in the metro area that chooses to open on Sunday.
eugenius October 4th, 2010, 05:34 AM This Korean sounds good - I am moving to a new place on the corner of Beaufort and Newcastle (above the new Coles) this weekend and will check it out. Hopefully there will be more activation along that section of Beaufort.
I think it is a shame the Design Centre for the Tafe really seems to turn its back on Beaufort St - just a concrete wall.

Welcome to the neighbourhood....
..and I agree, Beaufort activation closer to the city would be great, but lets not hold our breath.

Thanks Nate - although wasn't that far away before (Bulwer St near Lake St).
And yes - I am not holding my breath... I have been in Perth long enough for that!
edit - and this may be as good a place as any - anyone have any recommendations on internet suppliers? Don't do too much downloading, but play PS3 online, skype, stream TV, browse a lot etc. Don't really want to be tied in to an extended contract (I would pay more to not be in a contract) as there is a possibility I will be moving overseas next year. Was with Bigpond, but left them a couple of months ago when I moved out of my last place and won't be going back to them!

That is the policy the Liberal party will be taking to the next state election. Its the opposition and the Nationals that aren't allowing it at the moment.

You're probably right :(
btw when is the next food fair?
This Sunday! Starts at 10am and runs until 3pm. I will message you the address.
ckf and I land at like 8am so I will probably come home for a nap before I go. It will probably be after noon before I get there. All depends on how I feel/how tired I am.
Are you free after noon?
Sanj October 4th, 2010, 09:38 AM yeah ill be there. sorry no time for a nap mincy i want to get all the good stuff, you know how kiasu us gooks are. where is the food fair again?
im serious btw, if you nap im going to keep ringing the doorbell and calling your phones till you wake up and come with me to the food fair

Sigh. This has crossed my mind several times. You are right but we will be dead tired.
As I said, it depends how the flight goes. Sometimes I can sleep, sometimes I can't.
If we get home at say, 9am, an hour long nap should be fine. If we get there at 11am that's perfect. You also know how Asians are always late, don't you. My Mum will still be setting up at 10am ;)
where is the food fair again?
Ummm...good question.
I'll send you the address tonight as I don't have it on me. It's at a new hall/community centre too so I've got no clue.
im serious btw, if you nap im going to keep ringing the doorbell and calling your phones till you wake up and come with me to the food fair

There's some heritage shopfronts on Beaufort st near Newcastle that would make awesome neighbourhood bars and cafes. The rent there would be pretty cheap and they are mostly vacant from memory.

Samby, Nate, Bart, Jackson, Gabs - if you guys are interested in coming to the food fair, please message me (two of you have my number or otherwise send a PM). If it's after 4pm, I most likely won't reply so you can ask Sanj. I'd rather not have it up on the internet for everyone to see.
Look forward to seeing some of you there if you can make it :)

Dilaz89 October 7th, 2010, 10:01 AM Gave Herdsman a shot at lunch today. $10 for a continental roll which is quite steep. Wasn't anywhere near the size of a Re Store roll and the bread used was hardly continental. My biggest gripe was they put relish/chutney on roll. WTF.
Herdsman is not the sort of place to go if you're looking for value for money. Plus they stopped stocking Dr Pepper :(
samboy October 7th, 2010, 10:33 AM The relish (and the price) is the only thing that separates them from the dodgy asian lunch bar across the road. Me thinks it's time to boycott.
perthgazer October 7th, 2010, 10:35 AM i'm reguarly getting a lot of their pre made meals for dinner or lunch, i think they're great.
haven't tried the rolls/sandwhiches yet etc though
jackso October 7th, 2010, 10:37 AM I probably would not be buying the rolls, but if I was in a rush and wanted a proper meal I wouldnt have a problem buying those. They are relatively good quality too.

I went there the other day and picked up the Chocolate Mousse on your recommendation. Was fantastic, then I looked at how fattening it was. That shocked me.
Haven't really tried any of their other food but the prepared meals they had looked on par with what you'd get at M&S.
Shame they haven't got their deli section right, although I thought their deli section in their other store was quite average as well.
The store is well designed though and the whole retails area of the building has been done really well. The heritage on Wellington looks great.
Sanj October 7th, 2010, 10:58 AM yeah one thing that the boatshed absolutely owns all competing stores at is the deli and premade meals section
shame about the prices, everytime i go i feel like punching someone

I should be so lucky to have a girlfriend who is a professional!
stuwa October 11th, 2010, 05:32 AM Had breaky at Vans Cottesloe yesterday. It was ridiculously busy but we arrived just as someone was leaving so we got a table straight away. The food was ok but nothing to write home about and I had the hip pocket pain of around $60 for two which seems to be the norm now in these types of places. We had smoked salmon w potato cake, scrambled egg w mushrooms on toast, 1 mixed fruit juice and 3 coffees. (The first coffee was nice and rich but the others were too milky)
I like peace and tranquility at breakfast and I also like to hear myself think (about nothing) but the atmosphere was noisy and harsh, too many wannabees wearing Prada. The service started attentive but it dropped off from there, it was pretty loose by the end which gave me the impression that they didn't want us to linger.
All in all, meh and the view of the train track wasn't helping. I think I'm just over the whole expensive breakfast thing.
NEXT.
samboy October 11th, 2010, 06:57 AM never really understood the appeal of that place. People pack it in like sardines, you can barely hear each other and the food is meh. For some reason the perth public enjoys paying more for the inconvenience. (there's a whole business/marketing angle there that should be exploited ;))
stuwa October 11th, 2010, 07:12 AM Alot of people just don't give enough attention to the detail of what they're actually eating, comfort/noise levels, price/value for money etc. They feel its more important to find a parking spot right outside the door so that they can be seen climbing out of their Cayenne. Its quite amusing. There was a bit of eye candy around though i'll have to admit.;)

That is in no way limited to Perth. Theres plenty of examples all over the world where people put up with shit service, long delays, bad product, whater just to be in the "in" crowd.
Its a strange part of human behaviour.
Nate Von Longneck II October 11th, 2010, 09:21 AM I am a big fan of noisy breakfast places.. go to any Dim Sum, and you will see there are a LOT of people that like a noisy breakfast.
Also, Vans has been around for at least 25 years in Cottesloe. I can remember going there in the 80's.
You don't stay in business for 25 years if you're not keeping your customers happy.
Just sayin.
Sanj October 11th, 2010, 09:58 AM went to the suite in shenton park/subi on thursday night with my folks. it is owned by the same guy who owns the cabin
most dishes are smaller than mains but bigger than tapas and overall it was pretty good
the room is quite nice and service was overall pretty good, only fault being that the guy tried a little too hard which is still better than not giving a fuck
we shared:
- softshell crab with wasabi mayo and some kind of salad - very nice, not greasy, good value for money at around $15 for 3 soft shell crabs
- field mushrooms with stilton rarebit - was tasty enough but definitely the weakest dish of the night.
- pork belly with green papaya salad - very very good. i know pork belly is bloody everywhere but this was seriously good. again was quite good value at $17
- barramundi with braised fennel and an orange and witlof salad - flavours were very good but the barramundi was a touch too muddy for me which i suppose can happen
- chocolate parcel in brik pastry with persian fairy floss - nice, not too sweet, good end to the meal
overall meal for 3 without booze was $97 which i think is pretty good. definitely a good suburban restaurant well worth trying and kitchen closes at 10 on most nights which is handy as well

True. But keeping customers happy does not necessarily involve good service or good food.

Yea I can't argue with that Nate, it's completely subjective. Wat your really saying is if you don't like it, don't go, quit your whining and make room for others that do like it.
Am I right? ;)
jarkti October 11th, 2010, 01:57 PM Have people seen the adverts for Iron Chef Australia?
One of the chefs going up against the "big names" is the chef from Green House :)
BartBart October 11th, 2010, 01:58 PM ^^ Haven't seen the ads, but there have been articles about it the last couple of months.
acc521 October 11th, 2010, 02:12 PM Iron Chef Australia = fail. What makes it so good is that it's Japanese!
Speaking of cooking shows, I've finally started getting into Masterchef. The most recent Aus series just started here last month. It's not too bad, but what's the deal with the bald guy who is one of the hosts. I want to shoot him.
jonwil October 11th, 2010, 03:29 PM The problem I have with Iron Chef Australia is that it completly changes the format.
Iron Chef Japan (and those episodes of Iron Chef USA that I saw) were about finding the "best of the best" to challenge the Iron Chefs. Not putting "ordinary people" up against the Iron Chefs.
Its really a lame attempt by Seven to challenge the Masterchef dominance after the flop that was My Kitchen Rules.

i have no idea what the exact format is for iron chef aust but 2 things have already ruined it for me.
1) grant denyer being the host despite him admitting that he knows nothing about food
2) the scotch college chef (yes a school chef) being one of the contestants
i love iron chef america but 2 things i really enjoy are alton browns encyclopedic knowledge of food and the quality of the challengers and it looks like this will fall short
by the way what do u mean ordinary people?

omg. yes!
grant denyer ruins everything.
jonwil October 12th, 2010, 01:17 AM The fact that they are using Grant Denyer for this show seals its fate.
Surely there must be SOMEONE at Seven that they could have used that actually KNOWS something about good food...
About the only thing that could make this series WORSE is if it was on Nine, if it was on Nine, they would have given Eddie the job.

yup it's just diagonally opposite HJs. IIRC there used to be a seafood place for a while and a side entrance to the market as well.
miensie October 12th, 2010, 04:49 AM Well, at least it'll be something to draw me there. Even the Thai place there, which is run by a friend of my Mum's, is shocking.
Was pretty happy to hear about Jus opening in NB though, especially when I thought it wasn't going to happen. It's the only reason I go to Leederille and now, I won't even have to :okay:

i think jus is going in near the bird but dont quote me on that
Nate Von Longneck II October 12th, 2010, 05:24 AM Jus is down near the bird somewhere...
Flipside ...not 100% sure, I think it will be on the same side of William as Outre, but much closer to the city.
Also, I noticed the signage for New Edition Bookshop was up - opposite Brass Monkey.
Sanj October 12th, 2010, 05:26 AM mincy - serious question - how can that dish be called kway teow considering kway teow = flat rice noodles but u used vermicelli?
is there another name for the dish? also, is it a typically thai/lao dish? i definitely enjoyed it, hook me up with some of the pork crackle pls

Yes, if it is near the bird I know which shop it will be in. there was a deli/internet cafe near the korean hair dresser that has just vacated... That would be my bet for Jus' location...
seems like that lil section of William will be a skinny jean breading ground, especially when the state theater opens and Il drino move back to their old shop.

You remember you called me a princess when I told you that every time Mum makes kway teow for us, I always ask for it with vermicelli and no tofu? It's a preference thing really, even though 'kway teow' does mean flat rice noodles.
That is what it is called in Thailand. Not a Lao thing at all. Even if you buy it from a cart on the street, they usually have those three types of noodles you can choose from. I like the vermicelli cos the flavour soaks in better.
Got some of that pork crackle in my freezer somewhere. I have something kind of similar in my pantry which you deep fry - it's fantastic. I have a feeling you'd love it. Will give you some to try next time I see you as I have two 1kg bags of it at home. Can only be found in Thailand. Unless you wanna go to Sri Melaka and buy a pack of 6 pieces (!) for $5.
Was good huh. I wish I'd gone back for that sukiyaki sooner. Bloody Asians.
Sanj October 12th, 2010, 05:56 AM ah yes i remember now. also, hook me up with some of your mums chilli powder, that stuff was great
she should do catering or soemthing, the woman can cook
miensie October 12th, 2010, 06:03 AM She has toyed with the idea of opening a restaurant in NB actually but the food industry is bloody hard work. You remember I told you she's the kind of person who doesn't want anyone else to help cos it's not how she does it. Imagine having to do all of that cooking on her own, non stop. It'd be successful but I think she's decided it's not worth it.
Will give you a share of the chilli powder when I stock up next. I am running low too. She has containers of it at home. Should be in the house when she's making it, the smell is insane.
Sanj October 12th, 2010, 06:07 AM yeah she would work herself to the ground that way, not worth it. also the trek everyday would be pretty tiring i think
serious question though - would she do one off catering etc? she's vegetarian as well isnt she?
miensie October 12th, 2010, 06:16 AM Yep, she's vegetarian too.
Ummm...I don't know if you'd call it catering as such but people do request certain dishes and she'll make one large pot of it and put it in containers for them. Usually for similar prices as the food fair. Mainly things like laab, tom saab (the soup you tried), the duck and mint/coriander dish and narm pick etc.
She only makes the kway teow for the food fair or for dinner at home. I only get to eat it when I go down for dinner. She usually makes enough that we get to take a bit of the soup base home though. The lady boss at Sri Melaka has asked her several times to make the kway teow for them to sell at the restaurant but she's declined.
I can maybe let you know when she's cooking things in bulk for people and get you some if you like?
acc521 October 12th, 2010, 08:39 AM Love the pics mincy. I'm hungry!
Sanj October 13th, 2010, 10:51 AM going to a mates place for dinner tonight. so far we are having:
brisket - he started cooking yesterday
pork belly
some kind of coleslaw
some kind of rolls
home made bbq sauce
i may or may not overeat tonight
checked out little willys this morning, coffee was great (although a bit expensive at $4.30 for a long macc), the guy was extremely friendly and breakfast burrito tasty. overall definitely positive
Nate Von Longneck II October 13th, 2010, 10:58 AM Nice one Sanj... I talk to Rob (one of the owners) regularly... what is the usual price for a long mac? I will let him know.
Sanj October 13th, 2010, 11:03 AM yeah i think rob was the one i met, had a brief chat with him. seems like a really cool guy, we briefly chatted about the aging hipster who works at the gallery across the road
no idea what the usual price is or if there even is a standard price across perth but it is $3.80 at sherbet and that seems to me to be about fair. i would want it to be definitely sub $4 but then again most of perth seems happy to pay more
acc521 October 13th, 2010, 11:09 AM Where is this place Sanj?
samboy October 13th, 2010, 11:10 AM I was at dancing goat yesterday and they seem to charge the same price there as well. it's good but 4.30 for a small cup is excessive even by Perth standards. They'll probably get away with it in the western suburbs but $4 for that hole in the wall is my limit.
PS: Their service is very good
Nate Von Longneck II October 13th, 2010, 11:12 AM Where is this place Sanj?
Opposite Outre Gallery on William Street.
Still says "Il Vero Gusto" out the front.
Nice coffee, nice people.
Sanj October 13th, 2010, 11:12 AM william st, northbridge next to theburlesque lounge
pretty basic cafe, not a lot of options foodwise but i suspect it will be the kind of place that will do most things well and with smiles on faces which is always nice
a good addition to the strip
acc521 October 13th, 2010, 11:13 AM ^^Cool, will have to try the breakfast burrito when I'm there.

yeah like i said i think 3.80 is fair (taking into account high perth prices already) because in all fairness even 3.80 is a bit high but i suppose that is a discussion involving perth coffee prices i/o what little willys should be charging

Sanj, have you been to/heard of Serendib on Great Eastern Hwy? Thoughts?
Nate Von Longneck II October 14th, 2010, 04:51 AM Hi Mincy... Tu is on William Street, same side of the road as me, closer to the city. Between Francis and James.
They have a good reputation, but seriously, I have no idea about them at all. Would be good to hear an opinion from you! ...they are the next shop to open after us, in the redevelopment of William St.
miensie October 14th, 2010, 06:29 AM Thanks Nate, will try and have a look on my next free lunch. And maybe pop by to say hi :)
If it's a pretentious vintage/op shop that stocks overpriced pieces, I ain't gonna be impressed. Vintage is vintage, not designer items and should not be priced as such.
Sanj October 14th, 2010, 06:37 AM mincy - havent heard of it, what is it?
Sanj October 14th, 2010, 06:38 AM just had a look, i have driven past it but never stopped in. indian and thai seems like an odd match but then again it could work i guess, all depends on the chef.

pop in and say hi *after* you have checked it out, give me the low-down...
miensie October 14th, 2010, 08:26 AM Went there for dinner last night and it was pretty tasty. I'm not very knowledgeable about Indian food as I've only just recently got into it but I somehow doubt the authenticity of the place. Not sure if I actually got the bombay potatoes I ordered though. Was very tempted to order from the Thai section of the menu but talked myself out of it.
One thing's for sure though, what I had does not agree with me today.
Here's the [takeaway] menu, Sanj:

Pretty similar though the mock meat masala was not there last night. Dammit.
Is Sri Lankan food similar to Indian? Do they cross over in some ways?

I used to go there on my way home from work for a coffee maybe 2 evenings a week at about 530-6, but now they close early EVERY night of the week... :ohno:
I had Sizzlemania for dinner last night, cos I had never been there and I always get their flyers in my mail box... eh, apart from a decent looking waitress there wasnt much mania about the place.
Sanj October 14th, 2010, 08:52 AM mincy that (to me at least) looks fucking terrible
green curry, kheer, butter chicken, satay, creme caramel and sri lankan curry should NEVER be on the same menu
crazyknightsfan October 14th, 2010, 08:53 AM it was good tho and mincy liked it ;)
have u eaten at the red cray (about 2min walk towards the airport) before?
Sanj October 14th, 2010, 09:00 AM heard mixed things about red cray but definitely more positive than negative. havent eaten there though
btw a little tip for you - you are going to have to get out of the habit of having a fair few pub meals because by and large we do them TERRIBLY in perth and also charge you a fair bit for the priviledge
this is obviously in ref to your clarmeont hotel lunch
what did u guys have at this place?
crazyknightsfan October 14th, 2010, 09:05 AM Beef burger with the lot and beer battered chips for $15. The menu only has about 6 primitive things on it, the burger being the most gourmet
The cafe next to the Post Office on Bayview Tce seemed quite popular with Latte-in-Lycra brigade.
Out of the pubs I've been to for dinner in Perth (not many):
- Grosvenor on Hay St is massively overpriced. $22 for a pad thai from a pub? wtf?
- Brass Monkey at Northbridge was pretty good pub food but expensive
- Bobby Dazzlers was reasonable value from memory but no vego stuff
- The pub we went to in Midland was decent value iirc, it was the one on the old GNH
The elephant might remember a few more?
Pub food in Sydney isn't always good quality and value - the North Shore particularly has a dearth of decent pubs.
miensie October 14th, 2010, 09:08 AM mincy that (to me at least) looks fucking terrible
green curry, kheer, butter chicken, satay, creme caramel and sri lankan curry should NEVER be on the same menu
Yeah, I hear you. It felt like a part of me died going to such a place.
When has Thai and Indian ever been put together. Seriously.
Funny you say that though - the creme caramel did get an eyebrow raise from me.
We didn't have much choice though as the Red Cray did not have a table until 8.30pm.
I used to go there on my way home from work for a coffee maybe 2 evenings a week at about 530-6, but now they close early EVERY night of the week... :ohno:
Ah, so it is every night then. Maybe no one goes there that late. At least they have an actual sign so people know a cafe's there though.
GAbE27 October 14th, 2010, 09:12 AM it was good tho and mincy liked it ;)
have u eaten at the red cray (about 2min walk towards the airport) before?
heard mixed things about red cray but definitely more positive than negative. havent eaten there though
btw a little tip for you - you are going to have to get out of the habit of having a fair few pub meals because by and large we do them TERRIBLY in perth and also charge you a fair bit for the priviledge
this is obviously in ref to your clarmeont hotel lunch
what did u guys have at this place?
my friends bro owns it.. It is pretty good.
Sanj October 14th, 2010, 09:12 AM i actually was referring to what u ordered from this jackofalltradesmasterofnone azn restaurant

If there were enough of you ethnic f**s to keep these places in business they wouldn't be resorting to a mish mesh of bastardised menus.
miensie October 14th, 2010, 09:18 AM Beef vindaloo, bombay potatoes, dhal, paratha, pappadums.
The bombay potatoes and chicken satay looked very whitey from what I could see.
The potato dish was tasty though and the dhal was ok. I like it a bit stronger though, not as nearly sweet as it was. The dhal I had at Chutney Gardens was great.

Kelli October 15th, 2010, 04:48 AM If you're looking for decent pub food KFC, the Mighty Quinn in Tuart Hill. Reasonable prices (by our standards) and interesting and relaxed atmosphere as well.

I did see it but didn't read it. I follow too many blogs to read them all and really, I only check them out for the photos ;)
She does have a very interesting way of writing though. A lot of bloggers (who are nowhere near as well known or talented as Garance) are quite pretentious but she's very down to earth.

No one does opulence as well as the French ;)
Anna Dello Russo is quite tragic in my opinion. A lot of what she wears is very tacky and not at all elegant, let alone suitable for someone of her age. She could definitely take a leaf out of Carine Roitfeld's book in regards to how to dress.
But Tommy Ton would definitely be my favourite photographer and his photos are always stunning - well above Scott Schuman and Garance.

For me personally it's a complete and utter BORE!! More like a large garage sale.
I went down there once and did the whole tour in 65 seconds. Slightly better than the one up the road at the catholic school (45 seconds).
TBH I have somewhat given up on markets in Perth.
PS: Good for Matt though. The $270 wouldn't even stock the coke fridge at TOV. although katrina's approach was somewhat cynical. A more tactful request may have produced a different result (probably not)

Maybe I was a bit hasty in saying that. I had a really nice squid salad there recently, but now I've been pulled up, I remember seeing my dads steak and thinking it was a bit sad looking, considering the price. There was a deep fried moth in my salad, so they gave me a free dessert and the cheesecake was gorgeous. They probably weren't made on the premises though. The clientele can be quite interesting :).

You'd think that there would be more things around that area. Living in the vicinity means I'm a kind of shuttle service for the airport and the number of times that people arrive hungry, because they flew in on a budget airline is something of a phenomenon really. I never know where to take them!
Even when you work in West Perth and Subi it doesn't take long to get sick of what is there, it's all the same stuff anyway. That is why I like hearing about things tucked away in unlikely places. I've been in Leederville for a couple of months and am already underwhelmed. I'm in no danger of starving though.

The whole Gt Eastern Hwy strip from the airport to say Burswood is a real embarrasment. Such an opportunity to have a real thriving retail and entertainment strip and its just full of offices empty after 5 and run down shit holes.
West Perth, Subi and Leederville all get tiring after a short while but they are MILES ahead of Belmont. The thing I enjoy the most about where I work is the fact that I am forced to make my own lunch which is cheaper and healthier. Oh and I really enjoy going down to the river areas and going for walks. So nice and peaceful.
BartBart October 16th, 2010, 03:44 PM Just came back from The Quarter. Very nice food. We had the sourdough bread to begin. There was the complimentary prawn bisque with burnt butter (at least I think that was what we were told). I had the lamb three ways (Shepherds pie/lamb shoulder/piece of lamb rack) and mango cheese cake/mago icecream. All the meat (sorry Miensie) was very nice, but needed the salad we ordered as a side to break it up a little.
eugenius October 18th, 2010, 04:42 AM I work out by the International Airport and nothing around here - have to go into Belmont or the new Aroma Cafe (rip off) and Kewdale Tavern (bogan/tradie central) in Kewdale for anything to eat around here.
A good country type pub with good food is the Mt Helena Tavern out past Mundaring - big garden where you can even tie your horses up outside, and the bottled beers are all sitting in a bathtub full of ice! Just a shame you have to drive to get there as its the kond of place you could easily wile away an afternoon with a few drinks.

They have some nice things but it is waaaaay overpriced. Not vintage but $349 for a simple cotton maxi dress? I think not. Does not belong on William St, at all.
samboy October 18th, 2010, 05:02 AM That pizza base looks nice though (to my taste). I know it's expensive mincy but not really by Perth standards considering $20-25 seems to be the norm for most 'avg' size pizzas these days.
lol I have those blue plates at home. Can't beat the 60% off at DJs!!
The real ripoff is that $18 haloumi + some olives!! Bloody hell the perth public really needs to educate themselves.

lawl. Had a feeling you'd say that about the pizza base. It was sourdough and tasted/felt like multi-grain. Ugh. Went well with the topping though.
That pizza isn't average by any stretch of the imagination though. It is tiny. More a snack than anything.
I like the blue plates :)
acc521 October 18th, 2010, 09:16 AM The greenhouse looks really good inside. Shame about the lack of anything resembling value for money.

Just how packed it was - queues were back to back:

That was a really great event, thanks for posting it.
We just ended up eating at the places with the shortest queues. By the end it was better though, I got some of the takoyaki balls I'd been eying all evening.
BartBart October 18th, 2010, 02:52 PM ^^ So you got lucky then?

BartBart October 18th, 2010, 03:49 PM  one of my brothers beat you to that joke, but I'll pay it - even though I am not a kiwi.
Kelli October 18th, 2010, 03:55 PM On that night actually, I didn't know what they were called, I just saw people walking around with little tasty looking deep fried round things (aka balls). So I asked a fellow where he got those balls from and he just smiled and walked off. It was a serious question ffs, come back, I want to know! I asked a nice lady next, she didn't bat an eyelid.
Sanj October 18th, 2010, 04:02 PM haha for real?? dirty gooks keeping the good stuff to themselves
