Thanks for the suggestions guys - they are appreciated. When i lived in Perth i generally ate out in the Northern suburbs (where i lived) and its a bit of a hike to get over there now (and i am so glad that i will never have to do the 130k round hike accross perth daily like i did at one point)

Let us know where you end up and what you thought, James :)

i have absolutely no idea what youre talking about re tomorrow? is there another food fair on?

Aiya.

The Vegan Festival, remember? As I said, I can't guarantee the quality of the rest of the food but can guarantee the sticky rice and mango.

At the very least, you'll have something to mock next week on SSC ;)

Can I come? I will be at the East Perth basketball ring at some point during the day and will need some sustenance to keep me performing at my best.

Of course you can, Gabs. 10am - 2pm, are you free?

I would just add that Sienna's in Leederville is terrible. Truly, terrible.

Possibly the worst sit-down restaurant that I have eaten at anywhere in the world (well actually the Oxford branch of a chain over here Bella Italia probably takes that crown - I knew it would be terrible and warned my friends but they didn't listen).

acc521
October 29th, 2010, 11:21 AM
This is why I love you, acc.

We need more men like you, who actually give a damn about what they put on.

From memory, I have:

1 x Teal
1 x Red
2 x Beige
1 x Grey
1 x White
1 x Black/White/Grey
2 x Black
1 x Silver/Grey

Am on the lookout for a good Navy coat but I am picky about them. Want a good quality wool coat with gold buttons.

+10 points for owning a red coat :okay:

Maybe you and I can go shopping when you're here?

Thanks, although they were the coats on the rack, not all mine! Mine was the nice cream Burberry one though - easily the best on the rack ;)

Do you get cold easily? I want a new coat, something darker than what I have however am questioning the value of purchasing one when I might only be spending one more winter over here.

I've already done far too much clothes shopping over the past few weeks!

Red is definitely not my colour lol.

Shopping could work - I don't need to buy anything but a tour of all the new retail would be nice :)

But yeah, that was me, and you've summed up the reasoning behind my "weird look" perfectly.

I would just add that Sienna's in Leederville is terrible. Truly, terrible.

Harsh assessment IMO. I mean obviously it's not top end fine dining but the pizzas are good enough and the pasta. It's better than fatbellies was:) I do struggle to go on non-cheap nights.

I'm taking a niece (5 years old) to Frasers tonight. Kid friendly? I forgot to ask.

It'll cost you less, and she'll have a better time, at Siennas;) kids pizza, drink and ice cream deal is a godsend. Plus a playground!

Sanj
October 30th, 2010, 09:29 AM
i can somewhat understand why you would choose to go to siennas if you have kids but if not then fuck that, the food is terrible. ive had 2 absolutely vomit worthy pastas from there, surely we have moved on in perth from overcooked pasta drowned in heaps of shit sauce?

Nate Von Longneck II
October 30th, 2010, 10:44 AM
Harsh assessment IMO.

We went to Frasers last night, the kids menu costs $7.50, with adult sized portions. This is for a complete kids meal. The waiter even made a pink coloured "kids champagne" for my niece, for which we were not charged.

Sienna's is truly shit. Now that Jus Burgers is opening on William, I will never need to go to Leederville.

Last time I went to Sienna's I was truly appalled.

It's like the 80's never died, it lives on in Leederville!

You need to contemporise, man!

I thought the 80s were back in style? Lol in the 80's even to mid 1990s it was Fatbellies and maybe having eaten there still makes me feel Sienna's is a step forward! I say the Pizzas are good and now I think about it it must be years since I had anything other than a pizza.

It is like people who bag Anna Vietnamese... well it's not my fault they don;t know to get the stuffed chicken wings and the special lamb curry.

if ever a word described a likely bad eating experience it is "contemporary" so I'm unlikely to contemporise.

annas is pretty damn average sorry and i could be wrong here (unlikely though) but lamb curry doesnt sound very vietnamese to me either

tra vinh > annas

toto > annas

lido > annas

viet hoa > annas

probably in that order too with the first 2 being a fair bit better than lido and viet hoa IMO

I gather that many people, when they move to different countries, adapt their cuisines to suit availability of local produce? No? I just love lamb myself.

Anyway it wasn't a defence of Anna's (which I do like btw), it was more a comment that local knowledge helps make the best of a menu. Hmm none of those places sound like they are walking distance from my place either.

Also - I was in North Perth Sat night to see a gig at the Rosemount and was astounded at the total lack of food options in the area. Flying Taco was packed and we ended up eating at the pub which was surprisingly nice and surprisingly cheap (that does not mean awesome food for amazingly low prices btw but I had no expectations). Anyone know what bar 459 next door's food is like? There was a private function otherwise would have given it a go. It reminded me of a bad date in the mid 1990s where she lived in a suburb and I just figured there would be places to eat (not at that stage being aware of the total dearth of food options outside the inner city). Maybe I'm just old enough to remember how bad things once were!

Speaking of contemporary, I'm not sure over-priced, over-hyped burgers and tapas that neither resemble or have any of the appeal of the real thing are any better than a cheap and cheerful pasta. 'Cheap' used as a relative term here :).

I never understand in Perth why of all the immense possibilities there are with food, everyone copies everyone else. You'd think people went in to the food business for the creative part of it, else why else would you do it?

Anyway, I'm about to post something very 80's...I love dragging up old favourites. I love my mums 1970's CWA cookbook which I've got as well, food-stuff stains and all.

An onion, cheese and dill quiche I made for Pink Ribbon Day morning tea. I would have made it a quiche lorraine, because bacon is pink, but there were vegetarians to be considered, so red onion it was instead.

Don't usually photograph what I cook, but this was quite an event with pastry involved, so it had to be documented for posterity. I hate making that hideous stuff, although i've excellent pastry hands (which really just means they're as cold as a frogs bum).

within walking distance wouldve only been flying taco (good), that little mexican place (redefines hit and miss), kebab place, dodgy looking chinese i havent been to and saowanees thai which is your typical whitefella thai food but quite tasty.

there are a lot more options during the day with little pantry, milkd and il circolo.

also the place where piccolo used to be (next to flying taco) is currently being worked on, will hopefully be something good

So the red coat is not yours? Boo :tongue2:

And I was actually quite surprised that even you would have so many coats as it's not that far from the amount I have! Makes sense now!

Get cold very, very easily. I don't have enough padding to keep me warm, you see.

Even if you're gonna be there for only one more winter, you can still wear it back home, no?

Yep, that sounds good. We can do that.

Only 11 more days!!

Nah.

Cool, just checking ;)

he also said he likes Siennas, he likes the playground, and a TV, and the ham and olive pizzas.

I think that's more than fair enough, Matt.

Kids can be extremely fussy when it comes to food and if both of you are happy with the current set up then all the more reason for you to keep going back.

I don't like the place personally but I know a couple people who do.

The playground and TV would be perfect for keeping the kids occupied while the adults ate. Most definitely.

You know what I have noticed. Since the NB Piazza has opened 3 businesses surrounding it have gone out of business. Dome, Fish monger/Branded Burgers and the Chinese/Indian restaurant two shops over. And there have been no additions to that James-Lake Street intersection. The Piazza is turning one this month, so my question is: Has the Piazza lived up to its hype?

miensie
November 2nd, 2010, 04:30 AM
As far as I know, the Dome is still undergoing renovations and Branded Burgers closed down cos they were crap. Not sure what happened to that Indian place.

I was walking home yesterday after work and I think a new tenant is moving in (ex-Branded Burgers site) as a few men were unloading things from a van into the premises.

In other news, the Taj Mahal on Lake St has its grand opening on November 11th. The fitout is really quite lovely - they've taken a fair amount of time and effort to put it together. I especially like the carved horses at the front.

Sanj
November 2nd, 2010, 04:44 AM
that indian place was a special kind of shit and deserved to close. incidentally they did some pasta dishes too. yes, all on the same menu

branded burgers also crap by all accounts and the seafood place before it looked really average.

dome - has been closed for ages but hey, it's dome so enough said

i dont think it is anything related to the piazza and also dont think they should have been propped up by the piazza. if anything i find this heartening as places might now need to be good in order to survive

miensie
November 2nd, 2010, 04:50 AM
If that were true then the cafe that's within the Piazza will also close down because it is truly and utterly crap.

But I don't think the Piazza really affects the surrounding establishments in terms of determining whether they do well/badly.

It's a vast improvement from the grass that was there before and also a great sitting place during the day. Apart from its opening, I don't think I've attended an event at night so can't really comment on that.

noice!

btw how was frasers?

Firstly, so pissed I couldn't get to cube, but I wasn't going to run out on my 85 year old grandma... (I know you especially understand this!).

Frasers.

Not too much to report, because I had a very simple meal. Steak - had a Scotch Fillet (300g), I would say it was pretty close to perfect. Can't even remember the sauce, there wasn't much of it - it wasn't needed, the steak was really that good. They offered a selection of mustards to go with the steak.

Good wine list, not too ridiculously priced.

Entree had some scallops with a pea sauce, they were good, no complaints there. Also tried the white bait, I have had better, I guess it just felt a bit heavy - but, again, no real complaints.

Looking around, the one thing I noticed was that everybody's portion sizes were quite large.

The atmosphere was spot on for a "fancy" and yet casual dinner with a family group. Service, whilst not outstanding, was very good.

The one kid we had was very well looked after.

As we were leaving, there was an auction going on upstairs. We walked past, and I heard "12 thousand dollars.... going once...." ... that was enough for me to shout out "TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS!"... all I could hear was the sound of an audience gasping as I walked away with my Grandma. She got a giggle out of it...

I don't think any of us actively sits there and think of what's good/bad about it while we're out.

I do remember what worked well and what didn't, how the service was etc. It's not a conscious thing at all. And you can't really make a decision until the end of the meal.

I just don't believe in eating food that isn't nice. And it's actually really very refreshing to be able to discuss it with other people.

And I don't want to inflate his ego even more but I especially enjoy talking about food with Sanj because he knows what he's on about (unlike most people) and he's probably just as fussy as I am. None of my friends can have the same kind of conversation about food with me as I can with Sanj.

 of all the things i have been accused of not enjoying food is certainly not one of them

i enjoy food immensely, hence my passion for it and why im always curious. it is also something that soonish i will be involved in financially so i constantly ask questions

btw im just as quick to dish out praise as i am to criticise, surely all my gushing in this thread is testament to that?

Are you talking about the tunnel?

If so - yes, I was around. A giant scar appeared through Northbridge - it wasn't just backyards, a LOT of buildings were destroyed.

You can see where it occurred, all the newish developments around Aberdeen and Newcastle, are all a result of the tunnel.

It took a LONG time to get new buildings, as you can see, there is still land available as a result of the tunnel.

CBD restaurant set for renaissance

Perth's CBD is on the cusp of a dining renaissance with the opening later this month of a new high-end "icon" restaurant on St Georges Terrace and the start of construction for a mega-restaurant venue with four floors of restaurants, bars and function rooms in the former newspaper press hall of The West Australian.

Both developments will bring back high-end dining to a city centre that, with few exceptions, lacks restaurants at the higher end of the dining spectrum.

Sentinel, a 100-seat restaurant at the corner of William Street and St Georges Terrace, is the brainchild of Steve Scaffidi, who owns the celebrated Bar One. Mr Scaffidi says it will usher in a new era of dining for the CBD.

"It's French bistro meets New York grill," he said. "We've got lots of casual dining opportunities around town but Sentinel will be much more traditional."

Sentinel is part of a redevelopment that surrounds the AXA Building and extends into the former Newspaper House site.
Work is underway on Colonial Leisure Group's multi-restaurant business Press Hall, which is expected to open late next year.

ABORIGINAL DOLLS

These gorgeous Aboriginal Dolls [though not made in Australia - made in India] are a wonderful collection for any family and perfect for any Childcare Facility as they are quite affordable. They are ideal as birthday or Xmas presents. They are a perfect tool for Cultural Education - we encourage people who purchase these dolls to contact their local Aboriginal Community to find names for their dolls and thereby getting a better understanding of Aboriginal Culture...

Claisebrook, was great in theory, but epra let the market dictate and the vision was ultimately compromised. I am referring to the social equality and distribution of amenities... Thus it never truly reached its full potential.

That is my 5000 word case study of the claisebrook redevelopment paraphrased into a few sentences.

Ok well I normally make random suggestions with tongue in cheek, more for my own entertainment really. But if I notice that she has zeroed in on a couple of things she likes but is unsure then I'll give her my serious opinion (if asked). If that doesn't work then I might suggest she buys the whole rack (again, just to be a smart arse)

But when the boot's on the other foot I usually listen to her opinion (which she gives freely). If I'm about to buy something to wear that may make me look like a tool, I'd expect and want her to say something. It depends what it is too, formalwear definately needs a female objective opinion. tees, jeans, shoes etc - not so much.

Am I off the hook yet?:tongue2:

lawl, you were never put on the spot, Stu. I am merely curious :)

I'm guessing you're not fazed by her giving advice?

My honest opinion is that the majority of guys need some kind of helping hand when it comes to apparel and accessories. Not quite sure what it is about a typical straight guy that renders him incapable of putting things together nicely.

Three examples I saw just this morning:

- Indian guy in skin-tight grey pants with a satin hot pink/purple striped shirt tucked in. Holy crap. Even I don't own pants that tight and that shirt? My sis nearly crashed the car cos we were laughing so hard.

- 3/4 pants worn with sneakers and socks. What do you get? A patch of bare skin that just looks ridiculous.

- fluro orange shirt, soccer shorts, red striped socks AND Timbalands. Seriously, what.the.hell.

Just this morning.

One more thing: have you noticed that your sense of style has improved/changed? Has she started dressing differently too, even if it's a gradual change over a long period of time?

Not really. Although you women have an ability to mind read which is amazing. eg If she puts something on and I don't immediately blurt out "I love it!" then straight away she knows I don't like it.

Hey Mincy, you'd be interested to know Monza has closed down (no surprises I guess). At this rate Leedie 'ent strip' (LOL) will become even worse. Cafe 130 still closed, Old Cino to Go shut and Stuzzico will very likely close up soon.

Well, no bloody wonder. They are terrible.

Is Cafe 130 any good? I've heard some good reviews about it.

What did you think of the coffee at the Greenhouse, Samby? I've had three from there so far - two very good, yesterday's was burnt

Ah, good to have you back :)

Monza could/should have been a great place. those horizontal wooden strips on the front were ahead of their time, but the menu was never there, moreso the sour attitude. Ahh well. Did actually have a few nice meals there to be honest but it was always a case of what might have been. I'd always hoped for something like Cicciolina in St Kilda.

Samboy, view Oxford St as a landscape of potential or opportunity! Shame Stuzzico is struggling there I like it. Being so close to the very popular Little Caeasar's probably doesn't help. I've not been there yet which is a disgrace - always so busy (them not me) and I prefer to spare them putting up with my kids.

Miensie - Cafe 130 - the ultimate trailblazer Perth cafe, existed before most in Perth even knew there was a city called Melbourne;) If I didn't like poached eggs on toast I'd probably have a lesser opinion, but a fairly solid quality coffee. It used to be managed by Claire who runs the show at Tiger Tiger and it managed to keep things up in the years since she left. Closed due to termites in the floor, but rennovations seem to be progressing if at a snails pace. My guess is that they are stretched what with also being the leasholders for the old Cino to Go. I asked the owner to hurry up last council meeting (he was in the gallery) as I have poached eggs on sourdough toast withdrawal symptoms!

Probably the worst 'service' I've had, ever.

Poached eggs are actually quite hard to make so that they don't splatter and so that they get that just right consistency. The poached eggs at Zekka and Sayers are really good, I just prefer a bigger breakfast myself.

No idea when they're reopening then?

Bloody hell man I'm getting old and 'potential' aint doing it for me any more ;).

You're right about 130. It used to be the shit when Perth was still drinking Blend43 and their philosophy of bread any time of the day/night is after my own heart. I've had quite a few poached eggs there. Although it did go downhill quite a bit and the shitty chick (barista) behind the counter was a turnoff for me. More importantly though their 'rustic' approach was completely unhygienic. I reported them to the health dept after seeing some nasty shit with my own eyes after that time I stuck to coffee only. Hopefully things will improve if/when it reopens.
I had no idea Claire used to run the place. She's a strange character for sure.

Bloody hell Samboy I'm sure they only found the termites while trying to do a few things for the Health Dept... it is probably your fault it is closed. I will tolerate a bit of poor hygiene myself. I even still use public BBQs despite what I've read on these pages.

haha probably. I'm not actually that anal about cleanliness, rather, try not to think about it when it comes to restaurants but I'm sure you've seen how dirty the floor used to be behind the back counter right next to rubbish bins etc. I saw them drop a buttered bread on the floor while making a sandwich. She simply picked it up and put it back on the plate. On the same day we had also seen quite a few cockroaches on the walls.
I'm sure a lot of places do it but it's different when you see it.

On a completely different note do you know when the lot next to Kailis will start construction? I remember Catania listed that as one his achievements (god knows why) but I haven't seen anything for a year since it was announced.

Samb, a question, being that you've got a fine tuned eye towards hygiene (and by all means, I'm not saying that's a bad thing), assuming you've been, what's your opinion on Antz inya Pantz over in Vic Park? While every time I've been, I've found the coffee to be great, the hygiene/order of the place has always been so underwhelming, that I've dropped it down quite a few spots on my list.

hey vick I've been meaning to try that place as I've heard some mixed reviews. Rarely get to go to Vic Park these days so I'll have to make a special trip. TBH I'm not obsessed with hygiene but if the place looks shabby it reflects poorly on the owner and I typically vote with my feet.

Thought this was pretty funny in the UK forum :)
It's from the Bishopsgate Tower thread, they were talking about the restaurant at the top of the building :)

Restaurant (and public museum?) will be higher i believe. Dig deep into your pockets though as that eatery will be classy, and prices will match. bet a pint will set you back £6. even so, an expensive pint at +250 metres beats a £2 happy hour pint at ground level!!

I don't want to harp on too much about having just been in Australia for a month but I went to a Belgian bar in Perth where I paid $22 - that's about £15 for a pint of Hoegarden with a $5 deposit for the glass and that was on the dullest of street corners.

£6? Bargain..

Step away from the fact that he's a guy and is obviously dressed in what is typically a feminine outfit.

I can look at his outfit alone and tell you it is put together suberbly. Not just because they're quality items but that does seal the deal. Quality wins any day in my book.

had the panfried gnocchi with roast tomatoes, basil butter and parmesan and the baccalao croquettes with red cabbage. both small plates, was perfect for a light lunch, $24 from memory including coffee i believe which was fair value. would return for the quality of food and those prices

they did have some ridiculous items in the display fridge like frittatas for $16.50 though, youd want it to include a reacharound at that price for a damn frittata

Bars, boutiques put beat into Beaufort
LINDSAY MCPHEE, The West Australian November 8, 2010, 6:10 am

When the first Beaufort Street Festival kicks off this month, it will be a celebration of 15 years hard graft by locals that has turned the street into one of Perth's best-loved entertainment strips.

Although it stretches from the city to Bedford, Beaufort Street's hub is Mt Lawley and Highgate, where dozens of small bars, boutiques and restaurants have popped up over the years.

On Saturday, November 27, the artists, musicians, publicans, business owners and clientele who have made the area what it is will spend the day revelling in what the strip has to offer.

"Beaufort Street has always had an eclectic mix of shops, bars and family-owned stores," festival chairman John Carey said. "It has a sense of community; the people who live, work and play here are all really passionate about it. There are blogs and a Facebook group that has just grown organically because people love it.

"People complain that Perth is boring, which I think is unfair, but Beaufort Street is a standout."

Beaufort Street particularly has benefited from Perth's thirst for small and niche bars, which are joining the dots between Northbridge and Inglewood.

Later this month the Malt Supper Club will open its doors and a boutique beer bar is due to open next month.

Despite the fast pace of development over the past few years, the Beaufort Street phenomenon started 15 years ago when the Queens Hotel, owned by Australian Leisure and Hospitality, underwent a radical and award-winning renovation.

"Redevelopments of pubs like The Queens were cutting edge in their time and led the industry to innovation," ALH State manager Colin Gourdis said.

"They were the catalyst for building up places like Beaufort Street and revitalising areas that had subsided in time."

Russell Blaikie's Must Wine Bar, which celebrates a decade on the strip next year, followed a few years later, along with the multi-award-winning late night Luxe Bar.

New kids on the block Clarence's, the Beaufort Street Merchant and the Ellington Jazz Club have all added to the fabric of the strip, but old timers such as Luxe Bar and The Flying Scotsman have not rested on their laurels.

In 2008 the Scotto opened its upstairs Chesterfield-stuffed bar Defectors, with a long balcony giving views across the city. The same year Luxe opened its revamped outdoor venue BamBOO, a multi-purpose amphitheatre which hosts dance events, screen works, experimental music, exhibitions, plays and music festivals.

When the grand old dame, the heritage-listed Astor ended its time as Mt Lawley's only cinema, it was reborn as a unique venue catering for live music, performance and movie goers, attracting national and international acts.

"Beaufort Street has become a real destination now," Defectors manager James Connolly said.

"It's got all its bases covered from cocktails, a quiet pint and a pub lunch to fine dining and coffee houses. You can travel all the way along the street and find plenty of places to go and you'll find something different in every venue."

Bell rings in new supper club for vibrant strip

When former Dockers captain Peter Bell and his business partner, Tony Tricarico, open the doors of Malt Supper Club this month, years of work will come to fruition.

Although the pair came up with the concept of a Hollywood-style, late-night supper club five years ago, it took time to find the right venue.

Once found, however, that proved to be the easy part. Despite the venue having a liquor licence to trade until 3am, wrangles with Stirling City Council, which wanted to impose a midnight curfew, proved long and costly.

Two years after buying the building, Mr Bell and Mr Tricarico are finally ready to reveal their grand design.

"It took a long time and we were frustrated but that's the process that a lot of hospitality operators have to go through. Thankfully, we got the all-clear and we are ready to rock and roll," Mr Bell said.

"Beaufort Street is a wonderful area, it's really vibrant, has great people and great businesses and we were really keen to establish here. It's been a long road from what was in our heads to finally sitting here with it in front of us."

The venue, with its retro glamour design, has four bars, private rooms and an upstairs private lounge for VIPs and events called The Highlands, which will serve the best whisky from around the globe.

Aimed at a mature clientele, the 250-capacity supper club will open from November 27 from 6pm to 3am, Wednesday to Saturday.

"We just think there is a gap in the market," Mr Bell said.

"Young people have many places where they can go but mature patrons don't have that same variety.

"We are really happy to be here in the Mt Lawley community and positive that the Mt Lawley community will receive us well.

"At the end of the day we need it to be liked by people here because we will rely on them for it to be successful."

Reserve picks high-risk strategy
Shane Wright
Economics Editor

In the week the Reserve Bank decided to lift official interest rates, two high-profile purveyors of high-quality junk food went into voluntary administration.

The two are not unrelated and together suggest the economic road ahead is getting bumpier.

The Reserve's move to take the official cash rate to 4.75 per cent has been obscured by the Commonwealth Bank's decision to supersize its mortgage rate increase to 0.45 per cent.

Every politician and homeowner, including the overwhelming majority who won't be bothered to leave the Commonwealth Bank despite its efforts to gouge them of every last cent, had something to say about the bank's actions.

But among the economists and Reserve watchers, the real action was to be contained within Reserve Bank governor Glenn Stevens' statement accompanying the central bank's rate hike.

The Reserve's decision took markets and analysts by surprise.

The bank had decided against lifting rates last month when there appeared to be more reason to do so and the September quarter CPI result showed underlying inflation falling to sit in the bottom half of the Reserve's target band.

So instead of taking in the spectacle of the Melbourne Cup, analysts and watchers ploughed through Mr Stevens' prose - and came away almost as dumbfounded as those Australians who thought So You Think was a lay-down misere to win last Tuesday.

The Reserve has been worried about the inflationary effects of the current resources boom ever since it was clear Australia had weathered the global financial crisis.

It has been itching to lift rates to head off a repeat of 2006-08, when consumers (aided and abetted by Federal tax cuts) parlayed the last boom into soaring property prices, strong retail sales and inflation.

The problem reading Mr Stevens' statement is that it appears to be the only reason the Reserve moved on rates.

Among other issues the bank raised, almost all suggest inflation is under control.

According to the Reserve, the economy is growing at trend, public spending is falling, there has been a "degree of caution" in private spending, asset values are not moving either way, the high dollar is putting downward pressure on inflation and overall credit growth is "subdued".

So suprising was the decision compared with the statement that economists not prone to hyperbole effectively accused the Reserve of losing the plot.

"I think the Reserve Bank is losing touch with the common person," CommSec chief economist Craig James said.
Which brings us to junk food. It was revealed last week that Krispy Kreme - maker of fat-filled doughnuts which cost more than $2 each - had called in administrators.

The US-based chain started on the east coast in 2003, with its boxes filled with 12 or 24 doughnuts a common present from people who had gone through Sydney Airport on their way home.

High rents and falling sales in some of its outlets were blamed by Krispy for going from doughnuts to doughnut holes.

Two days later, the franchise holder for ice-cream business Baskin-Robbins also went into administration after it lost its licence to operate the firm's 92 outlets across the country.

Allied Brands, the company behind the franchises (which also includes Cookie Man) said expansion plans had collided with an "uncertain economic environment".

There has been plenty of concern in the general retail sector that since the Reserve started lifting rates late last year, and the Government's stimulus cheques washed through the economy, shoppers simply do not want to shop.

The Reserve itself has noted the emergence of the new "conservative consumer".

It appears that the conservative consumer has lost the appetite for high-priced doughnuts, biscuits and ice-cream rather quickly.

As last week's retail figures suggest, despite high consumer confidence, booming employment and rising household income, Australians are not spending. That may be the Reserve's aim, but the concern is that the bank may have gone too far.

Those concerns were confirmed by new housing approval figures that suggested the property sector was in free-fall.

Approvals in September fell 6.6 per cent nationally to be down 31 per cent over the past six months.

That would not be so much a worry if there were far too many houses and apartments across the nation. But Australia is facing a housing shortage.

In WA, the State with the fastest growing population in the country, private home approvals were down 10.7 per cent in September and more than 25 per cent since the start of the year.

This is the problem facing the Reserve.

It is petrified of a new resources boom inflation breakout and so is lifting rates at the same time as consumers continue to show they are not convinced the economy is going gang busters.

At the same time, the Federal Government is winding back its stimulus (and is under pressure to go harder sooner).

The Reserve's position is colliding with a housing market that is a long way from going gang busters.

The result of that collision, however, could be a shortage of homes that in turn forces up property prices, which would then require action from the Reserve.

There would also be "collateral damage" of many people unable to buy their way into the housing market, and those people who bought into the market when rates were at 50-year lows.

The dangers, to put it bluntly, are enormous. If the Reserve gets it right - as it did from 2006 until at least now - then the economy will grow steadily, unemployment will fall, the mining boom will drive WA to greater heights and all of us will share in the wealth.

Get it wrong, however, and the Reserve will stop the economy, drive up unemployment and cut housing affordability for hundreds of thousands of Australians.

And no amount of Baskin-Robbins will ease the pain of that.

looks like our bogan friend mincy has taken her velour covered ball and gone home.

lawl. Was at lunch. Even I need to eat ;)

I said 'step away' from the fact he's a guy, not ignore it. Of course you can't ignore it. What you can do, is admire his outfit on its own.

Not only has he got the mix between classic and fashionable right, he's also chosen a colour scheme that works together well. But above all that, he pulls it off.

Jeans and a tee are unisex pieces but a leopard print scarf, studded clutch and gold tone cuffs with statement gems/stones are not.

Saying any bogan in Midland would be able to put an outfit together that well and look that flawless is ridiculous. I have [unfortunately] been to Midland and I did not see one person (male or female) dressed nicely or with any kind of style.

To also say the pieces of jewellery he is wearing even resembles anything you'd find in Kmart or Target is ludicrous. Some of those cuffs are YSL and are bloody expensive. You get what you pay for and when you pay close to $500 (or more) for a cuff, it is bound to be made from superior materials. Not to say that some designer stuff can't look tacky (cos it can) but each item he has on, are of impeccable quality. That coat is to die for.

Every one can buy things but whether they know how to put them together well is a completely different matter. That's where style and personality comes in. This guy has both in spades.

I don't believe it's about what pieces reflect what era because most items come back around (hello, strong shoulder blazers, tie dye, stone wash etc.); nor is it about trying to appeal to the standard norm.

I expected exactly this reaction (with the suspicion that someone like Jackson might get it). A lot of it is highly subjective but when it comes to fashion, I don't (and never will) expect the majority of men to have any kind of clue. Girls (and probably some metrosexual men) wear things that confound you, make no sense to you, because of this reason. Girls with any kind of fashion sense or personal style will never listen to you, because of this reason. You have no clue.

A lot of metrosexual or gay men dress a lot better, have some semblance of style because of this reason. They have a clue and they have a great eye for detail.

As I said, hits you smack between the eyes and still no clue.

This brings it back to the discussion that everyone in Perth dresses the same. Is it any wonder when any kind of style is met with this kind of reaction. Shorts, t-shirt and thongs on almost everybody - that's boring. But that's 'normal' so it must be ok, it must be right.

HAI MINCY - from my part, the reaction is not to what he is wearing - I see more gay and more outlandish outfits almost everyday in Perth.

The reaction is that its not particularly stylish, nor interesting.

It's a very conservative outfit, bar the feminine coats and accessories.

The jeans, tee, and coat could all be picked up from various outlets.

There is nothing confounding about the outfit, apart from the rather dubious accessories. There is nothing challenging about mixing black with tan.

Lets say it gets hot. He takes his coat off, and puts his bag down.

What you are left with is black jeans, and a black tee.

Duufus even has his tee tucked into his jeans.

Yeah, I am actually. I like the tan and off-white/cream ones. Not sure if I ever will though cos I always pick them up and put them back down. As is always the case when it comes to buying flat shoes ;)

I have several pairs of heeled brogues in several colours. A have a pair of black patent ones which are divine. I've worn them to death though as they need to be reheeled and resoled but they're great for winter.

We will always be friends, hon

Oh, meant to tell you, I went to S&T Thai for dinner again on Friday night with ckf.

A few of the dishes there are really bad and whitey (the yum woon sen I had for example) but that som tum finally has my stamp of approval.

Asked for it without sugar or peanuts and for it to be very hot.

Damn, was it hot! I had two mouthfuls with sticky rice and my eyes started to water. Let me tell you, my tolerance for chilli is pretty good.

Mix of sour/salty/hot was also just right.

But that chilli is something amazing. Now that, is what I'm talking about.

Awesome :okay:

pretentious much? jking!!

man our puff pastry dominos was amazing! almost gourmet standard if not better!!

What day did we agree on to catch up this week?

Sank, I had the bbq chicken and the pork neck and both were fantastic. Given my penchant for servo pies and pub steaks that probably means f*ck all to a food nerd but just thought I'd put it out there ;)

Btw, I was too knackered to come round last night for the game and forgot about you...

awesome, ive been keen to try the pork kneck for a while.

not sure if your comment was entirely tongue in cheek but i always appreciate recommendations

all good re the game, it was fantastic. pretty sure i woke up some neighbours when the second goal went in. good to see torres playing with a smile on his face again, he definitely makes my heart skip a beat (no homo)

The BBQ chicken didn't look that amazing but the pork neck looked good.

The sauce that came with it (tamarind, fish sauce, chilli and lime from the looks of it) looked fantastic.

thanks, will definitely try it

mincy - with papaya salad etc when you eat out, do you specify for them not tto use fish sauce?

hey sanj (or any non-sanj plebs) can you recommend me a restaurant in melbourne. i.e If I were to go to one place while I'm there. It's a few months away so I can book ahead no worries.

Budget: $200 for 2 (without alcohol)
Taste: Nothing too complicated or heavy/greasy. (Keep in mind I'm a boring old man)

what sort of food do you like (im aware you dont like anything too crazy, no gook etc)

eg what would be your favourite restaurants in perth and say syd or melb that youve been to?

the first 3 places that came to my mind were movida (will be fairly noisy and also tapas, not sure if you like it but fantastic tapas if you do), rockpool bar and grill (hard to beat in terms of quality of simple food done well, something on the menu for just about anyone, casual-ish atmosphere, great service) and grossi florentino (italian restaurant, like perugino only not stale and done better). it is fine dining though but meant to be really good.

rockpool menu - http://www.rockpool.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Download-Rockpool-Bar-Grill-Melbourne-Menu-PDF48.pdf
GF menu - http://www.grossiflorentino.com/docs/Restaurant%20website%20menu.pdf
movida - http://movida.com.au/hosier.html

FYI - when i went to rockpool b&g sydney recently 2 of us spent around $420 there but that included around $150 in booze and we also ordered the 2 most expensive steaks plus 2 entrees, 2 sides, 2 desserts and oysters and i doubt you would eat that much. $100pp should be fine

I can eat Japanese 7 days a week but probably best to try something different.
I keep going to back to Satsuki in perth although that doesn't give you much to go by. I haven't been to any 'known' restaurants in Melbourne but have really enjoyed Tetsuyas and Wildfire in Sydney for different reasons.
Happy to try some degustation menu to prove to my Mrs that I'm not as predictable as she thinks I am (ok I am) so not too fussed about breaking the budget to some extent. Someone said 'fifteen' is pretty good but they're not foodies so grain of salt.

edit...thanks! Just saw your list. let me check it out.

ah ok if you liked tetsuya you might like ezard then (which i recommended to vicky and he loved).

i suppose like tetsuya it can be broadly described as modern australian, proper whitey techniques with asian influences (japanese, chinese and thai). nothing over the top, very tasty food. have been there twice and also recommended my folks go there and they really enjoyed it. mum in particular doesnt like anything too crazy so that would fulfill that part of the brief too.

check out www.ezard.com.au for menu etc

there is good japanese in melb too, a number of izakaya places have opened up

Foster's is actually considered "drinkable" in England.

Say no more.

Fosters in Europe is the same as Crown Lager in Aus. Doesn't make it any better though!

I was really surprised at just how popular it is throughout Europe.

...moving on, I love Pierre Herme macarons!

All of that discussion spurred on from Mincy posting the pic of that guy was gold my friends, gold :)

Let's be honest though, in Perth your options are more limited because of the weather. I've bought so much good stuff over the past two years but it's pretty much going to be t-shirt and jeans the entire time I'm over there simply because of the weather.

Still, most guys in Perth even manage to get t-shirt and jeans wrong.

Also shorts just don't look good. Ever.

Mincy, I saw a really awesome red coat on Saturday at Selfridges and I actually contemplated getting it after our discussion, but for reasons discussed earlier, it's just not worth the outlay for one more winter.

You are so so wrong re shorts. There is nothing better than a good pair of legs in shorts, my friend.

I said they weren't good from a fashion point of view. As for perving, that's another matter altogether ;)

Oh and on food related topics, my grandmother has just bought some lamb from one of the farms and will be slow cooking a roast in her wood fired oven for when I get home :)
