jarkti November 8th, 2010, 12:55 PM ...moving on, I love Pierre Herme macarons!

I am soon going to attempt to make these, and I am going to fail :)
ryan79 November 8th, 2010, 01:54 PM All of that discussion spurred on from Mincy posting the pic of that guy was gold my friends, gold :)
Let's be honest though, in Perth your options are more limited because of the weather. I've bought so much good stuff over the past two years but it's pretty much going to be t-shirt and jeans the entire time I'm over there simply because of the weather.
Still, most guys in Perth even manage to get t-shirt and jeans wrong.
Also shorts just don't look good. Ever.
Mincy, I saw a really awesome red coat on Saturday at Selfridges and I actually contemplated getting it after our discussion, but for reasons discussed earlier, it's just not worth the outlay for one more winter.
I got a whole bunch of cool jackets that get worn only a handful of times. Shame really.
I also have a cashmere long coat, leather gloves and some scarves that NEVER get worn. So sad.
BTW I disagree with you about shorts. Shorts are a fashion unto themselves.
Nate Von Longneck II November 8th, 2010, 02:11 PM S&T Thai...
Mincy!...they do make a nice Som Tum! I also had to prod them a bit, to get it how I liked, which is the classic Bangkok street food version. Its really close to the real thing, and just as good.
..I've also had the pork neck. The flavour and sauce were spot on, the neck strips were not as tender as I imagine they could be. ....but, not being an expert on pork neck, is it ever really tender?
Kelli November 8th, 2010, 02:22 PM I get wear out of my long wool jackets in Perth. Pretty much between May and September I don't go out without gloves, jacket and a scarf (have the latter two on now). I marvel at how lightly people dress actually...the wind chill factor is a killer.

Well you're just a freak :) Normal people don't get that cold in Perth! I never needed more than a t-shirt with a jacket/jumper over it.

Serious? I can get away with shorts (yes shorts acc) and a t shirt during half of winter.
Matt B November 8th, 2010, 03:53 PM Gratinated is a word that should only be found in a Women's Weekly recipe not the menu of a fine dining establishment.

GAbE27 November 9th, 2010, 01:56 AM yeh Acc, you'll remember how awesome shorts are when you com pack to Perth and dont have to look at those British pale and pasty legs!!
miensie November 9th, 2010, 03:06 AM We really must do that soon, there always seems to be something keeping us apart. In a week I will have lots more free time :)
On another note, these exams are going to be the death of me. I really am seeing a difference between UWA and Curtin.
Im off to buy myself some unhealthy exam food...
Haha, I know - we were meant to meet back in August, remember? Jarkti, you and I.
So you mean next week you'll be free? Do you like the idea of copious amounts of coffee and chin-wagging?
I love me some unhealthy food :D
What did you end up getting? Could go for a sesame ball right now...
pretentious much? jking!!
It not only had carrot in it, Gabs, but broccolli.
I have been eating yum woon sen since I was a little kid and not once have I seen it with either in it. Nor is it supposed to have that in it.
The stupid thing is the picture they have of it on the menu is actually what it's meant to look like - yet what you get doesn't resemble it at all.
What day did we agree on to catch up this week?
Aiya.
Friday after work.
Know any places we can go to?
Then you can be home and have your shoes off by 7.30pm like the old married man you are :tongue2:
thanks, will definitely try it
mincy - with papaya salad etc when you eat out, do you specify for them not tto use fish sauce?
Yep. Soy sauce is not that foreign to Thai people or cooking ;)
Still, most guys in Perth even manage to get t-shirt and jeans wrong.
This.
Also shorts just don't look good. Ever.
And this.
I love you, accy-acc.
Mincy, I saw a really awesome red coat on Saturday at Selfridges and I actually contemplated getting it after our discussion, but for reasons discussed earlier, it's just not worth the outlay for one more winter.
I don't quite understand how you can't wear those coats here in winter? Winters here are very cold! Albeit not as cold as England but still cold. I suppose it'll feel like Autumn to you when you get back though.
I would've bought it ;)

Yeah, I have to admit the one I had last Friday was really good. I just have to remember to ask them to not put carrot in it next time. Always forget something :ohno:
In regard to the pork neck, no, not really. It is supposed to be quite chewy.
Have you ever had a Grandma chicken (literal translation)? That is one tough bird but it is really, really nice. Meant to be like that though.
Fantastic with som tum.
Jeans > shorts.

lawl, wat.
Chopsticks are obviously a Chinese influence, Gabs, and would've been introduced as a result of the influx of Chinese immgirants, but some Thai dishes are typically eaten with chopsticks (kway teow for example).
Not your standard day to day cutlery used but as I said, it is used for certain dishes.
It is hardly bias when it's true.

Kelli November 9th, 2010, 09:33 AM Well you're just a freak :) Normal people don't get that cold in Perth! I never needed more than a t-shirt with a jacket/jumper over it.
You'll get karma for being mean, it'll be 42 degrees the day you fly in. I agree regards jeans vs shorts, it's more about breathability than coverage anyway in terms of summer comfort, jeans are pure cotton.
Serious? I can get away with shorts (yes shorts acc) and a t shirt during half of winter.
Oh, you're one of those, you must have an internal furnace! I'm serious, I can't even look at people with exposed skin in winter without feeling a deadly chill. But then I hate doonas because they are too stifling even in winter, everyone uses them though.
acc521 November 9th, 2010, 10:05 AM I didn't say that I don't wear shorts. I'll probably wear shorts more than jeans when I'm over. The weather demands it.
Milan Luka November 9th, 2010, 10:05 AM So um Kelli. Do you mind if I ask how you sleep in winter if you dont use doonas. :creep:

acc521 November 9th, 2010, 10:08 AM I don't quite understand how you can't wear those coats here in winter? Winters here are very cold!
I can count the number of times that I would wear a proper coat each year in Perth on one hand. Often during winter it was too hot to even wear my leather jacket.

I hate doonas enough to bring it up as a topic of discussion, even though I know I'm on thin ice, especially when Bart gets in . It needs a skybar poll, what bedding do you use! I just use fleecy sheets, a wool blanket and a light cover.
Kelli November 9th, 2010, 11:06 AM I’ve been trying to think of ways to preserve dill, I have just tried trapping its essences in oil and as dill mayonnaise. Dill is my favourite herb I think, we relate to each other. That’s the problem with vegetable gardens, if you manage to get anything to grow at all, it is in vast quantities which ripens all at once. Jackets are very useable - esp when a Perth breeze is blowing in non-summer months, particularly in the evening.

Jackets, yes. Coats, no.
BartBart November 9th, 2010, 12:09 PM I thought my cashmere coat (knee length) was pretty handy last winter. Unless you mean a different type of coat.
edit: Stupid me - Perth coats wouldn't be anything like European ones as far as warmth goes.

GAbE27 November 10th, 2010, 01:41 AM Had Seoul Korean BBQ last night in Vic Park! 40 bucks per person for all you can eat!! And I eated all I could eat!! :)

went to a korean buffet not that long ago, i think it was about $14... omg. i ated so much... such bad idea. i sometimes forget korean food has its moments... it's still not a mainstream as tha others, kinda like filipino cuisine...

You must be one of those guys that just doesn't feel the cold that much.
I get cold extremely easily, it's quite annoying.
Come winter, I wear about 3 - 4 layers, stockings (I don't do pants), a wool coat and lined leather gloves.
Have also just found two white coats I fell in love with straight away. Perfect length, beautiful quality and in this gorgeous warm white. I love very feminine clothing. The white coat I already have is an off white and gets worn to death in winter so these will be a welcome addition :)
miensie November 10th, 2010, 03:11 AM Also went to Lanna Thai for dinner last night.
All I have to say is bad, bad, bad. Just awful. Definitely not worth the $65 total.
This is exactly why I rant about crap whitey bastardised food. Let me in the damn kitchen and I'll make it myself.

Yep.
I had tom yum which had carrot and broccoli (ARGH! :wallbash:) and was very weak. The yum woon sen looked good but was devoid of all taste. Dry and so Goddamn bland even Samby would find it wanting.
ckf had massaman beef which I could tell was far too milky just from looking at it. He wasn't very impressed either.
Do they not know what it is meant to taste like? Are there monkeys doing the cooking?
It's Dusit Thai all over again.
For crying out loud, if this is the level of Thai food around we have no hope.

samboy November 10th, 2010, 03:27 AM LOL I didn't even see that. Don't be so sure though, I have a habit of adding random veggies into a dish to bulk it up ;)
miensie November 10th, 2010, 03:32 AM I am so angry.
I have not been this angry with something I've eaten since Divido.
Before that, it was Dusit Thai.
Never again.
Sanj November 10th, 2010, 03:36 AM speaking of divido, i plan on going there in the next month or so. had a fantastic dish at the largesse dinner cooked by jason whateverhisnameis.
if the rest of the food matches up to it (and so does the service) i will quite happily pay the prices you were unhappy with
miensie November 10th, 2010, 03:41 AM Nothing wrong with the food per se - indeed, it's some of the tastiest I've had - it's the portions that piss me off.
The suprise factor probably played a large part in me hating it too. I don't like surprises as it is, let alone when I'm hungry.
Would probably be fine if you're ok with spending a bit more on a three course meal but as I said the last time we discussed it, I can get a three course meal at Perugino for a little bit more than the cost of that serving of rotolo.
Sanj November 10th, 2010, 03:44 AM that's hard to believe mincy
the rotolo from memory is around $35. you telling me you can get a full 3 course dinner for anything near that?
incidentally the guy i got my white truffle from also sold some to perugino so this week would be a good time to go there
miensie November 10th, 2010, 03:47 AM You better believe it.
Our company has Christmas lunch there every year and we all have a three course meal for $45 per head.
Entree, main, dessert and coffee for $45 and I leave very, very full.
My boss told me the other day they also do something similar for dinner, which I have to look into.
This is from the set menu. If you ordered from the a la carte menu, it'd definitely be a lot more.
No, it's not a huge grouping, nor do they require a minimum number of people to do this.
Sanj November 10th, 2010, 03:50 AM that is exceptionally cheap but you cant compare a set lunch menu with limited (i assume) choices with an a la carte dinner menu
also, is the lunch set menu available throughout the year or just a christmas thing? ive never been a huge fan of perugiono but at that price it is definitely worth doing
Sanj November 10th, 2010, 03:54 AM just checked their website, i was wrong in this case. the set lunch menu is now $48.50 but you get a lot of options and appears to be fantastic value
miensie November 10th, 2010, 03:56 AM It's available all year round.
Just looking at the website, there is a choice of a good 11 options for entree and 9 for mains. That's not too shabby at all. That's about a similar amount of options available from memory last year. There are a few new things which I might try this year round.
It's been increased to $48.50 but food and service at Perugino is impeccable and most definitely worth a lot more than that.
- EDIT -
Ah, you saw for yourself.
miensie November 10th, 2010, 04:00 AM I like how you thought better of your wording there, Sank.
Much appreciated :)
Sanj November 10th, 2010, 04:04 AM i changed it pretty much immediately, im not nearly as much of a c**t as i make myself out to be
re perugino, there arent many veg options though, do you request something special? i remember you saying youve had the same ravioli (i think) for the last few years, which one was it again?

The homemade spinach and ricotta ravioli which is cooked in a sage, butter and mushroom sauce. You know my attitude towards the token vegetarian dish but this is soooo good. I've had it every year but it doesn't get old. I am very much looking forward to it again this year.
And yep, I get something made. The chef is a good friend of my boss' so they always discuss it between themselves about what I can/can't eat.
That dessert tray is divine...
GAbE27 November 10th, 2010, 04:22 AM I need new work shoes!! I know what I want but dont know where to find them...
I almost bought a pair of Bally's, they were exactly what I wanted, but they were $700 and since I walk 3kms a day to and from work they would get wrecked pretty quick...
Help!
miensie November 10th, 2010, 04:33 AM $700 for men's shoes??
What, why?
You know I'm just gonna tell you that if you really like them then you should buy them.
Just wear your sneakers on the walk to and from and change into them when you get to work.
Since when do you have to dress up for work, Gabs?

I dont dress up for work, I just need new shoes and they were the shape/style I wanted... but I would prefer to spend a bit less... So I need suggestions for work shoes. max $400 spends!! I want a rounded toe and I hate the pointed clown shoes that most dudes wear...
p.s I will never be on of those sneaker and work clothes guys! I would rather hang myself!!

I wonder if we like the same shoes. I had by heart set on a pair of Ballys but could not come to terms with paying that amount for work shoes.
If you want cheap but comfortable I buy Julius Marlows. They aren't great but not bad and about $100-$120.
crazyknightsfan November 10th, 2010, 06:48 AM ^ I've got a pair on right now
Am tempted to start wearing suit + sneakers as my feet are getting rather sore from walking in these shoes every day...

True but niether are most of the shoes in that "range". They're the best of an average bunch.

Don't suppose you know what it's called?
Most guys I know wear Julius Marlow to work or something similar. They're not great but they're better than a fair few around.
Men's shoes are quite uninspiring in my opinion. The sneaker fascination, I get.
Do you guys really care though?
And God knows trying to take a guy shoe shopping is like pulling teeth.
jackso November 10th, 2010, 08:18 AM I think it was Aquilla or something Miensie. I walked past very briefly (after im not sure how many drinks) but I only remember seeing mens shoes.

miensie November 10th, 2010, 08:30 AM Aquila?
They're not bad actually. I like these two:

They're both round toed, Gabs. Especially like the first pair. Simple, classic. Love the stitching detail on it too. Have always been a fan of the lace up over the slide in style.
Oxfords = ♥
Also love that cognac colour.
$269 for both.
Quality looks fantastic, but I'd go in and check it out in person :okay:
GAbE27 November 10th, 2010, 08:40 AM hmm I do like.. Simple, classic and not shiny!!
where can I find these feet covers???

The black pair are definitely round toed but the second pair do look pointed, don't they?
That's what the description tells me though ;)
From memory of what that section of the mall looks like, it'd be in the Queens Building, Murray St side. Jackson said they're next to Industrie.
So, should be: Jurlique --> Industrie --> Aquila. If you hit the jeweller then you've gone too far :okay:

perthgazer November 10th, 2010, 09:07 AM you could just order some from topman online gabe. pretty cheap, they won't last too long but you can buy a whole heap for the price you will pay for one at aquila

GAbE27 November 10th, 2010, 09:52 AM Ok changing subject now.
I think the Bird is struggling! I keep getting annoying facebook emails from them almost every fricked day, even after I deleted them of my groups list!! anyway back to my point, they send out emails at 830ish promoting that nights activity, reaks of desperation!!
And personally, I dont like the place, it has such a horrible lay out that pushes everyone to the front and crowds the entrance and bar, then there is a massive empty space at the back in front of the stage, which is always empty... just put some tables and chairs to encourage people to move back and not clog up that tiny area!! BAAAAH!!
rant over!

samboy November 10th, 2010, 10:20 AM +1 aquila. I bought a pair 8 years ago and still looks new. Very comfortable (worn extensively). I also bought a pair of Florsheims at the same time and gave it away after a week as it was bloody uncomfortable.
Of course it may vary between different models but that's my experience.
samboy November 10th, 2010, 10:22 AM hmm Bird. Yeah. Step 1 clean up the entrance, windows etc. (or move it to some dingy alleyway if that's the look/feel you're going for)

Kelli November 10th, 2010, 01:45 PM crave's idea is a good'un
what about making some compound butters and freezing them? could be a good way of using up your excess dill
i normally make up a batch and it lasts a while, eg anchovy butter for steak etc
Oops, just saw this...that is an excellent idea, thanks, I've got some chives, sage and garlic as well, that sounds like a plan for them too. Dried herbs just aren't the same.
BartBart November 10th, 2010, 01:58 PM And we all know why Sanj knows how to make compound butters to preserve "herbs" to cook later...
Sanj November 10th, 2010, 03:04 PM i think the bird is good. yes theyve saved on the fitout but the staff are friendly, there are no dickhead door bitches to deal with and booze is cheap. hendricks and tonic for $9 or so is extremely cheap by perth standards
re the setup gabs - the often have gigs or just local nights there and so the dancefloor is used a fair bit, or at least has been in my experience
Dilaz89 November 10th, 2010, 03:30 PM The Bird is ok but i've only been there once. From what i've seen it does get busy fri and sat nights which is the main thing. Weeknights/days is another story that has to do with our good friend population density.

acc521 November 10th, 2010, 11:00 PM If you go overseas get some work shoes from Zara. I've got a few pairs of boots/shoes from there and they have all outlasted any others that I have had.
Ted Baker, which I love, let me down in the shoe department.
I saw some really aweseome Rockpool x Adidas work shoes once in HK but have been unable to find them anywhere!
Ipggi November 11th, 2010, 12:02 AM If you go overseas get some work shoes from Zara.
Give a couple of years and I am sure there will be a Zara in central Perth. So no more shoe woes :)
A Westfield executive, Robert Jordan, told Fairfax: "We're very excited to have the first Zara store in Australia, it's a great coup. Our deal is not exclusive and I am quite sure they haven't come all the way to Australia to open only one store."
acc521 November 11th, 2010, 12:17 AM ^^Possibly. Good news about the 4-5 story one opening in Melb next year, however you must remember that the primary reason for not opening in Aus years ago was because it's hard to translate their business model to Australia because of the distance. I'd be very interested to know how they have decided to adapt for the Australian situation and whether Perth fits into this adaption or if distance still remains an ''unsurmountable'' issue as far as Perth is concerned even with the Australian adapted model.
GAbE27 November 11th, 2010, 01:33 AM i think the bird is good. yes theyve saved on the fitout but the staff are friendly, there are no dickhead door bitches to deal with and booze is cheap. hendricks and tonic for $9 or so is extremely cheap by perth standards

The set up is fine (love the fitout), its the lay out I have an issue with... it just doesnt work, especially in a quiet time and there is no band... I am sure they could invest in some more tables and chairs. Just pack em up when there is a band on and the D-floor is required.
The bar proposal for 91 James will be located just off Nicks Lane. See Google maps.

I'm all for minimalism when done well, crave, but in general, men's shoes (sneakers aside) are pretty uninspiring.
Can't be helped I guess, considering you guys don't really have much to turn to.
Probably partly why the androgynous look is appearing more and more in fashion and lines between male and female attire are blurring.
Probably also partly why guys like Bryanboy have resorted to wearing heels and sporting Chanel handbags ;)
+1 to both sneakers and work clothes and hate of pointed shoes! The latter probably shows my hate of things that are meant to be fashionable but are really just plain stupid (see platform shoes, et al)
It's not the pointed shoe per se that looks ridiculous. It's generally the OTT nature of the outfit or the particular pair of shoes a guy has chosen.
Example: tacky white, cheap textiles, faux-croc, and pointed. So common on your Industrie/Elwood wearing type.
See my point?
miensie November 11th, 2010, 03:24 AM Speaking of uninspiring, these are anything but:

sneakers on the other hand... if it were legal I would marry them!!
miensie November 11th, 2010, 04:00 AM It's just a word, Gabs, ie. boring.
While you may be more of a sneaker buff, I'm sure there are many guys out there who prefer dressier shoes.
I find flat shoes very uninspiring. High heels, on the other hand, that's one of my two loves.

I expect the pointy shoes (especially those that take it to the extreme) to curl up at the tip and have a little bell on the end.

acc521 November 11th, 2010, 05:53 PM Hey guys
Was great to check out all of the improvements to Northbridge and to finally meet Nate. Some really cool pieces in there mate, my bro is considering buying that long city themed one that was just to the left of the counter.
Hopefully once the William Street upgrades are done, they do the same with the equivalent section of Beaufort Street between Francis and Newcastle. Some really cool similar places that are all empty at the moment which could be great. I was really impressed with the scale of the developments - I didn't realise it went along so much of the street. The theatre was underwhelming from the outside.
I got a Winter Love Bubble tea with Sago from Hi Tea and then continued into the CBD. Was great to see places like Ezra, The Bird etc for myself even if just from the outside. In the CBD (and Northbridge, Mt Lawley and Leederville) I must say that I was really surprised at just how dead the streets are. I guess it's just a matter of adjustment having come from London but wow, I really didn't expect things to be as quiet as they were. It was really sad as there are lots of new places but no people!
Loved 140 William Street and have to say that having seen it in person, I think leaving that little space rather than putting a building was a good idea. It is a great place to sit and look at the backs of the heritage buildings which are awesome in themselves. This will be great once all the tenancies are open. Murray Street between Barrack Street and Lord Street is in desperate need of rejuvenation. Hopefully Equus kicks off development in this area because I forgot how much of a shocker it is. Primarily one and two story, crappy buildings with even crapper shops inside. Huge potential here. Equus is a behemoth! Treasury should really help that end of town too.
Enex - the less said the better. I felt like I'd walked into a bad, stock standard 90s design. Really uninspiring and nothing of much note in there. Greenhouse on the other hand was great. I really liked the vibe and the service, and the flat white was perfect.
The Apple Store. No worse or better than any other around the world. Smaller in size but identical in design and has everything you could want so can't really complain.
Wolfe Lane - still a work in progress. Wolfe Lane the bar was clearly wanky just by looking at it, I'll be interested to see what the lane itself is like when all the new stuff opens - did it always extend all the way to the back of Holiday Inn or did that used to be blocked off?
Jean Pierre Sancho - bread and cakes looked decent, macarons looked terrible.
I then walked into Mt Lawley. Again, where are all the people? So many cool little places - all empty, along with the streets. I thought the Brisbane was closed until I peered in!
Beaufort St Merchant - I like what they've done with the place, the retail section was never that great and the expanded dining/drinking suits the space much better.
Vinyl at Planet - they've improved from what they were. Smaller in size, but a much better selection, which my brother tells me is updated often.
I then walked into Leederville. Apart from Little Ceasars, not really much new of note. I walked past Kitsch and that looked pretty cool. Jus was busy as usual, but mum made lasagne so it was off home for dinner :)
Overall, I was shocked by how quiet everywhere was, the streets and venues in general. Lots of positive improvements though compared to two years ago - there really is a lot more variety than before as regards bars/cafes/restaurants.
Confirmation that when/if I come back to Perth permanently, I need to live somewhere between Northbridge and Mt Lawley. I was genuinely excited walking through here and it's so obvious that this is where it's at in Perth.
Lots of Asians and hardly any Indians and Pakistanis. Nothing racist, just very noticeable and the complete opposite of London. As to be expected, Asians provided most of the vibrancy, and I loved the smells of the food coming out of all the Asian shops - I really miss that in London.
It took all of 2 hours out and about in Perth before I was accosted for change by an Aboriginal.
Fashion = non-existent.
Leederville = still crap.
Potential. So much potential. Especially walking between Mt Lawley and Leederville, there is so much space for increased density. With zero high rise and no loss of any character homes/streets but just small 4-5 story apartment complexes, the whole population of ToV could be increased tenfold so easily.
Going to Galileo next week for my Auntie's birthday on my recommendation. Excited!
Tomorrow = Sherbet and Jun and somewhere new for coffee in Northbridge.
Sanj, Gabs, Nate and anyone else who was interested - we gonna hook up dinner at the new Korean BBQ place? I think I passed it - is it the one near the Court? Do they do vego options for Mincy?
Will have to do Jus burger night as has been in the pipeline for over a year too!
acc521 November 11th, 2010, 06:00 PM Mmmmm kebabs. Best kebab place I have been in Perth is at Broadway shopping centre in Nedalnds near UWA. SO GOOD, though I am generally drunk when I go there.
Their pide is the bomb too. I think I bought enough Chicken Katsu dons and bubble teas from Nagano next door to keep them in business for years to come lol. My fave Kebab is Stalactites in Melb. I still have a soft spot for Peters by the Sea too.
Nate Von Longneck II November 11th, 2010, 06:11 PM Perfect summary acc.
To be honest, in the ten weeks I have been working in NorthBridge, I have never seen it so quiet (this week). Dunno whats up with that....
But, yes, it's all about potential. I think these quieter days are a reminder that NB is not quite there yet.
haha @ Leederville = Still crap
..and count me in for Korean!

Oh My God Chicken Katsu don is my favourite drunk food ever. I've spent many a friday afternoon drinking at the tav then stumbling over to Nagano for Chicken Katsu don. I am always devastated when I get there too late..
Ipggi November 12th, 2010, 12:31 AM On the quietness, it has been raining the past few days for the first time in a while? Rain seems to scare people.
Actually I think the quietness is a symptom of all Australian cities. I call it The Castle effect, where during the week most Australians seem to rush to their comfy suburban homes after work and stay there for the night rather than going out to shop, dine or drink.
It is a problem in the largest Oz cities too, and I think helps suggest why most shops in those cities still close early even though they have deregulation. The new Sydney City Westfield had to really fight to get retailers to stay open until 6.30pm for example.
GAbE27 November 12th, 2010, 01:38 AM Acc- count me in!! Also how are your legs? walk much??! :)
If you are coming back into NB, try Zebba for coffee! I will be in Mt Lawley tomorrow lining up at HAL for kicks but after that, I can come down for a coffee.

ryan79 November 12th, 2010, 04:13 AM Hey guys

Welcome back mate. Enjoy the buzz because soon you'll be missing London. You pretty much did the same thing I did when you got back. Just a massive walk around to see the changes. I also spent some time in Kings Park. When you've been away from it for so long you realise just how amazing it is.
Agree with you on the place to live in Perth. Its the closest you'll get to that vibrant inner city life. But it is a great area.
I worked in Leederville for a year - fed up after half a lunch break. Better than Belmont though.
I think the one exciting thing about all the shit there is in Perth is the potential of it all. We've got a great long grid lay out and plenty of blocks to develop.

desperaterobots November 13th, 2010, 06:13 AM I went to the Burmese association fundraiser food fair thing this morning. Fucking hell there was some tasty, tasty shit on offer. My fridges full of it now ... :D
Second Saturday of the month cnr Bulwer and Stirling. Anyone else been?

Thanks for nothin, Burmese people of my street!
samboy November 13th, 2010, 09:13 AM Went to the "fez" today for breakfast. It's a new cafe along walcott st Mt Lawley (The art deco bdlg).
The place was absolutely packed which we thought was a good sign. It's not the most comfortable brekky joint as the tables are very small and cramped together. Not somewhere to kick back.
The service was good and staff friendly. Coffee wasn't bad but definitely overpriced ($4.30 for a SMALL Long Mac) which isn't really justified.
The eggs benedict were cooked well and not too heavy ($16). The bread portions were VERY thin which is pretty much an instant turn off for me as a bread lover. We even ordered additional toast ($5) which looked like were cut using a ham slicer (slight exaggeration!).
I didn't have any major complaints but came away quite hungry ($36). By comparison we typically have something similar + more at Zekka for $30 which really fills me up.
Worth a look (may be for dinner?) but I don't think I'd be rushing back.
desperaterobots November 13th, 2010, 09:33 AM Those prices are fucking ridonkulous.
Nate Von Longneck II November 13th, 2010, 09:41 AM hahaha
People are stupid in Mount Lawley.
samboy November 13th, 2010, 09:50 AM yeah after brekky we simply walked into town and had some dim sum. That hit the sport for sure. Should have had that instead. Only if those bastards did coffee.
Sanj November 13th, 2010, 10:28 AM hi kids, menu for tomorrow
freshly shucked coffin bay oysters

ryan79 November 13th, 2010, 05:33 PM Went to Amuse for dinner tonight. Was pleasantly surprised. I thoroughly enjoyed everything on the menu except the Yabbie.
I still give the service and ambiance to Jacksons though.
Wouldn't go back to Amuse again but was good to go to once.
acc521 November 14th, 2010, 05:17 AM +1 to Sanj finally intending to post photos of his food for once!
Had breakfast at Tarts today. Toast with Avocado, Tomato and Feta cheese. $14 + I can't remember what for a flat white. Food was simple, fresh and tasty and the coffeee was good, slightly weak though. Service was really good. Overall I was happy.
vic-k November 14th, 2010, 02:48 PM ah ok if you liked tetsuya you might like ezard then (which i recommended to vicky and he loved).
check out www.ezard.com.au for menu etc
Mr Sanjipoo speaks the truth. Ezard is a great place, and all things considering, not really all that expensive. A place I'll be definitely going back to.

my mate didnt bring her SLR but she brought a point and shoot so ill get the photos off her soon. the only course we forgot to photograph was the truffled honey, macadamia and pistachio ice cream with apple tart
7 courses, lunch went from 12.30 til nearly 8pm (i think the dessert plates were cleared at 7.45). cleaning up was a bitch but overall a massive success if i say so myself. definitely will be planning something more simple the next time i have people over but it was a real treat with all the white truffle etc.
some really nice booze drunk as well - monteiths apple cider, bollinger and piper heidsieck champagnes, marchand and burch chardonnay, picardy tete de cuvee pinot noir and merlimont and lamont's black monster.
not bad for 6 people eating, only really 4 drinking

huh, I havent been keeping track, but do you now live in perth Mr kfc?
jackso November 15th, 2010, 01:43 PM ^^Possibly.
Perth will fit into it eventually I'm sure. While they are still establishing their business in out part of the world they are continuing their distribution and logistics from Europe. Once they have more of a presence here they have indicated they will establish a distribution and logistics centre somewhere in the Asia Pacific region.

miensie November 16th, 2010, 03:39 AM The haloumi there is good but talk about a ripoff.
$6 for 4 slices of halaoumi is mental. You could buy a whole packet of haloumi and grill it yourself at home. Had some yesterday and it was fantastic - better than 399 as theirs is a tad too salty.
crave November 16th, 2010, 03:43 AM i could eat haloumi everyday... :~
crazyknightsfan November 16th, 2010, 03:46 AM the little lamb koftas are pretty nice too...again a rip off at $6.50
btw rajesh, there's no mulled wine anymore. they got rid of it as its 'too hot' for it now...
GAbE27 November 16th, 2010, 03:51 AM Who'd you go with?
Did you manage to talk to the events coordinator at Town Hall?
Hold on, you decided on UWA, right?
I dunno who the photographers are, recommended to us by a friend.
never really considered UWA (sorry to who every suggested it)
we are going to have it at Town Hall :)
mmm i went to 399 twice yesterday lol. can't get enough of the haloumi and the dates wrapped in bacon
man that is commitment... I can never do the "walk back in" !!
I will get me a slice of that!!
miensie November 16th, 2010, 03:54 AM we are going to have it at Town Hall :)
Awesome! I have lots of questions which I can pepper you with tonight.
Gotta get my butt in to gear and actually do some of the associated jobs that comes with being given the Maid of Honour role.
acc521 November 16th, 2010, 03:59 AM I'm a big fan of 399. I got Green Jasmie Milk Tea with Grape Jelly. So good :)
miensie November 16th, 2010, 04:02 AM I am too. Just not for the food they have on offer.
Jelly > sago. They get it wrong more often than they get it right.
acc521 November 16th, 2010, 04:08 AM I find that jelly goes better with the fruitier type ones or the ones without milk, and that sago goes better with the milk based ones and flavours like hazlenut, milo and chocolate. It's a very precise science ;)
I also had a grape one with lychee jelly and normal sago a few hours later courtesy of my friend.
Gotta try and fit as much bubble tea in as I can before going back!
I haven't tried the food at 399. I really rated the service. Between that and Greenhouse I've been very impressed service wise - def not what you'd expect from the Perth of 2 years ago, hopefully it's a sign of things to come and raises the bar more generally.
Re halloumi, I've become hooked on the stuff since moving to the UK PG. Grilled halloumi, moroccan cous cous and falafel with hummous is a dinner I have often. So good.
miensie November 16th, 2010, 04:12 AM You're gonna make yourself sick.
I went off bubble tea for a good two years purely cos I drank too much of it.
Have you ever had the purple dream? :puke:
acc521 November 16th, 2010, 04:14 AM Yeah not a huge fan. I like Winter Love and Summer Love as far as ''unidentifiable'' flavours go.
miensie November 16th, 2010, 04:18 AM lawl. Yeah, what is winter/summer/spring love anyway.
From memory, summer love was my favourite out of the three.
This brings back some good memories - being able to have a conversation with you in real time on SSC :)

Bar 399 are our bar friends on William. They help us out a lot, and deserve all the success they get.
Greenhouse, I was also really impressed last time I went there. Absolutely zero complaints.
Acc - you checked out Icey Ice?
(serious question!)

my favorite place in all of Northbridge!! Love the amine looking staff they have working there!! :-)
(serious statement!)
miensie November 16th, 2010, 04:34 AM Icey Ice is good.
They really need to downsize though. I asked for a small and was told the smallest is a large.
It's too much even for two people.
acc521 November 16th, 2010, 04:37 AM I haven't had Icey Ice yet. Had so many people telling me to go!
Yup miensie, it's great being on SSC real time. You can tease me about your great morning teas in real time again :P

Yes, but in this case, you are at home where I'm sure your Mum whipped you up some yummy breakfast, no? Not the same effect :P
Try the latte flavour! The fruity ones are too much in my opinion.
P.S. I made French toast for breakfast this morning. Topped with slices of banana, cinamon and a drizzling of maple syrup ;)
The fat man in me wept with joy.
jackso November 16th, 2010, 04:54 AM How on earth do you make time to do that before work?

Yeah mum has been making me some great breakfasts. Today I'm eating nutri grain, which I haven't had in 2 years. It's a novelty :)
Agreed re fruity milk teas - they are more miss than hit.
The French toast sounds awesome. Here's another one I like. Toast with ricotta cheese drizzled with honey and sprinkled with cinnamon.
miensie November 16th, 2010, 05:03 AM How on earth do you make time to do that before work?
Get up at 6.45am, finish cooking by 7.20am, very full by 7.35am, that's how.
I generally don't eat breakfast at home but at the office. I usually just make breakfast for the other half but this French toast is something special and is better eaten warm :)
Plus, I just like cooking.
At this rate, something might actually stick!

No Nutri Grain in England?
Ricotta and honey and cinamon??? *dies*
Really? I'm generally not a fan of sweet and salty together.

Nope. No cherry ripes either!
Don't knock the toast combo either until you've tried it :P Fresh ricotta isn't very salty at all.
miensie November 16th, 2010, 05:21 AM Nope. No cherry ripes either!
Another reason for you to not go back ;)
Dilaz89 November 16th, 2010, 05:48 AM Get an Icey Ice!!!
Awesome pics acc! Really hope you get a lot out of perth this time round. If you'd like to meet up for a walk one day soon that could be arranged :)
Sanj November 16th, 2010, 06:07 AM No worries, the buggers are bursting forth now with this warmer weather though :ohno:.
Hope it went well, pork, fennel and apple is a nice combo, that's where the zucchini flowers went too wasn't it? Looking forward to seeing the photos.
changed the puree to a parsnip puree simply cos one of my friends doesnt eat pork and so i did a scotch fillet for him with parsnip puree (fennel and apple wouldnt have worked) and couldnt be bothered making 2
went really well overall, 7 courses, 7 hours. definitely the longest meal ive had
You can post photos from facebook on here Sanj. No pressure or anything :).
yeah would rather not share my full name etc on here, vicky might be tempted to break the VRO
Sanj, the pics aren't on your Facebook :(
are u sure? damn it i went through the pain in the arse of tagging myself in all the pics my mate put up of the lunch. i also shared her album of the pics.
MINCY - CAN YOU FIX THIS FOR ME PLS? COMPUTER + SANJ = FAIL
Sanj November 16th, 2010, 06:49 AM popped into Mrs S this morning, new cafe in maylands at cnr eight ave and whatley crescent.
looks like it has potential, similar to sherbet in that it is casual, has homemade cakes etc but without as much of a focus on the cakes. apparently they will be expanding the menu soon, for now just simple things like muesli, banana breads etc but from the date and coconut cake i had the qulity is pretty good
coffee was also very nice

Your friend might have her privacy settings set so that only her friends can see the photos.
If you want to post them to SSC, simply right click on the image to get the address and then paste it here. You can hotlink to individual images on facebook without needing to be friends etc.
Sanj November 16th, 2010, 07:00 AM yeah but i dont want my full name etc on ssc. how do i get around this? do i have to upload it to flickr or one of those things?
also, can you pls look on my fb and let me know if you are able to see the pics or my update about the lunch?

If you hotlink the photograph directly then it won't show your full name or any details, it will only show the photograph. It's only if you like the actual webpage that the photo is on then will people be able to see your details.
I just checked your facebook on my fone and I can't see any link to the photos you speak of. It might be different on the computer but its blocked at work so cant check for you mate

Sorry hon, was at lunch.
I've just checked your FB and nothing's there. I'd say her privacy is limited to friends only so even if you've tagged yourself, we can't see it.
Do you want to just save the pics, zip them then email them across to me? I'll up them to my Photobucket for you if you like :)
Definitely do not recommend hotlinking and even if you did, the page won't load and an error message will come up because of the same privacy restrictions.
Sanj November 16th, 2010, 07:31 AM for fucks sake, how do i zip them then?
that would explain why i didnt have any comments on the photos, i thought that was weird
btw thanks mincy
miensie November 16th, 2010, 07:34 AM Oh dear. This is worse than I thought, lawl :tongue2:
Ok, never mind the zipping as you'll need to download winrar to do so if you haven't got it. Pics on FB aren't large in size so just save them and email them separately. Hotmail has a 10MB limit per email if I'm not mistaken so that should be fine :)
* By separately, I mean attach them one by one. Don't send them in individual emails. Just in case ;)
crazyknightsfan November 16th, 2010, 07:35 AM Definitely do not recommend hotlinking and even if you did, the page won't load and an error message will come up because of the same privacy restrictions.
Not if you only hotlink the photo
for fucks sake. how do i zip them then?

Sanj November 16th, 2010, 08:11 AM cool, no pics of the cheese plate, finished dessert or the granita but it gives some idea. best 2 courses were definitely the pasta and pork belly. i would pay good money for either one of them
thanks mincy!
miensie November 16th, 2010, 08:18 AM The pasta looks good. I've no idea how you guys managed to eat all that. Don't know if I could to be honest.
And you're welcome! :)
crazyknightsfan November 16th, 2010, 08:21 AM kfc is pretty cut he didn't get any pork belly
Sanj November 16th, 2010, 08:26 AM as you can see mincy we didnt really alter them to degustation like portions, hence the 7 hour meal and most of us still feeling full the next morning
kfc, that pork belly was epic, really really nice. ill make it again soonish, you guys can come around. we'll get mincy some breadsticks
mincy - pasta was a play on a fairly famous buon ricordo dish

The hell you will.
You better make me something a whole lot more substantial than that. That pasta looks good *wink wink nudge nudge*
I wanna do a small dinner with you soonish (som tum + somen style) but our apartment is a mess and will probably remain so until we settle in properly.
And what kind of Asian doesn't have wintermelon tea in their house, eh? :poke:
Sanj November 16th, 2010, 08:53 AM mess is fine, stop making excuses. when next week is dinner at your house? will you cook meat for the rest of us?
Nate Von Longneck II November 16th, 2010, 08:57 AM In my experience, vegetarians make AMAZING meat dishes.
