Awesome pics acc! Really hope you get a lot out of perth this time round. If you'd like to meet up for a walk one day soon that could be arranged :)

Will let you know - schedule is pretty tight until I go back. I'm enjoying being back stacks. 2 weeks is no where near enough time.

Try the latte flavour! The fruity ones are too much in my opinion.

P.S. I made French toast for breakfast this morning. Topped with slices of banana, cinamon and a drizzling of maple syrup ;)

Umeshu
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Various brands of Umeshu for sale at a Yamaya liquor store in Iizaka, Japan

The famous Choya brand umeshu. The ume fruits can be seen at the bottom of the bottle

Umeshu on the Rocks (Umeshu Rokku)
Umeshu (梅酒?) is a Japanese liqueur made from steeping ume fruits (while still unripe and green) in alcohol (焼酎 shōchū?) and sugar. It has a sweet, sour taste, and an alcohol content of 10-15%. The taste and aroma of umeshu can appeal to even those people who normally dislike alcohol. Famous brands of umeshu include Choya and Takara Shuzo.
Ume liquor is popular in both Japan and Korea. A similar liquor in Korea, called maesilju, is marketed under various brand names including Mae Hwa Su, Mae Chui Soon, and Seol Joong Mae. Both the Japanese and Korean varieties of ume liquor are available with whole ume fruits contained in the bottle.
Japanese restaurants serve many different varieties of umeshu and also make cocktails. Umeshu on the Rocks (pronounced umeshu rokku), Umeshu Sour (pronounced umeshu sawa), Umeshu Tonic (with 2/3 tonic water) and Umeshu Soda (with 2/3 carbonated water) are popular favorites. A popular choice for young people is to mix it with Green tea (o-cha). "Umeshu" can be served at different temperatures; chilled or with ice, room temperature, or even hot in the winter. Many people also make their own umeshu at home.

November 17th, 2010, 08:00 AM
^ I went and had a look, but I really cant make a commitment to any pair I try... I have issues!! (my current pair I have had for 8 years)

I also tried on some jean pants from Jack London, they looked cool-ish... but the best thing about them, was that I discovered that I have dropped a "dress" size from 34 to 32!! YAY to weight loss!!!

miensie
November 17th, 2010, 08:07 AM
Yeah, you'd definitely lost some more weight since the last time I saw you. Good for you, Gabs. Feels great doesn't it :)

32 is the most popular/common size, no?

Jack London had some nice items the last I was there. They also have some weird things too. A gold brocade blazer for example

And if you didn't really like a particular pair, then I wouldn't fork out $270 for shoes that are just 'ok' to you.

Bahahahaha...the second pair looks a lot like my everyday shoes, Samby.

The first pair are platforms though. I only have two pairs like that - one which I do reserve for special occasions and the other is fine for work.

It's not so bad, I am quite used to it by now. Have been wearing heels since I was 11/12.

I'll admit it is partly why I have back pain now and then though. My phsyiotherapist did recommend I wear substantially shorter heels but I told her I'll take the pain over flat shoes anyday.

Have you tried the coffee at Good Samitarians yet?

I mostly go into town on Saturdays mincy and everytime I've walked past it's been closed. May be they just do weekdays. PigeonHole has just opened a coffee shop 'Cabin Fever' at their Bon Marche location. ]

I went to the opening last Friday night.

Salmon quiche was soooo good. Like a better version of a home-made quiche, if that makes sense. The smoked salmon flavour had delicately infused rest of the quiche. Outstanding.

Didn't have a coffee, because there were free alcoholic drinks on offer!

Johann, who runs Pigeon Hole, is an amazing guy. Opening two businesses, in Perth, inside a month, is no mean feat. He is about to open "The Fox Hunt" on William Street, Northbridge.

Also, for the first time ever, Little Willy's is open on Sat and Sun this weekend. I believe the opening hours will be 8am - 5pm.

Hello! I live in Korea, and noticed the pictures from Tong86. I was wondering how much per person a meal like that would cost? Here, it would be about $7 - $8 per person...plus alcohol. Beer or soju would be about $3 per bottle. All of those side dishes (with the exception of the kimchi pancake) would be included with the meal and re-fills would be free.

miensie
November 18th, 2010, 05:44 AM
Hi Davie!

From memory it was $142-something for 7 people so a little over $20 per person.

That included drinks and the side dishes were also complimentary :)

I know what you mean though, all you can eat Korean BBQ goes for $5-6 per person in Thailand too.

Nate Von Longneck II
November 18th, 2010, 05:44 AM
Hi Davie,

We paid about $25 per person, including drinks and side dishes.

The meat dishes started at about $8, beer is about $6 or $7.

I think the side dishes were free.

For $25, we really ate quite a lot, it would be considered good value here in Perth. You could probably choose wisely, and spend about $12 per person (plus drinks).

Most of the people at the restaurant were Korean, a good sign!

Looks good Crave.

I normally go to PoPo on Barrack for Korean, most dishes are $8 - $10, including a nice selection of complimentary side dishes and soup.

Bonus - you can always buy beer at Korean restaurants!

..and, they are open until at least ten every night (inc Sundays)...

I am so spoiled living in Korea. Stores are open 10AM - 9PM seven days a week.....and living near a university, many restaurants such as the one you people went to, are open 24 hours....although who would want to eat that kind of food at 9AM is beyond me. Maybe people stumbling home from a bar at 4AM. I'm moving to Perth in February...back to school. Will have to get used to Perth's trading hours and liquor laws.

next to the court wine bar

entree - meatballs are great as are the cured salmon/beef carpaccio special they usually have. the eggplant and prosciutto entree is bloody good too

pasta - best one is probably the artichoke ravioli

mains - duck, chicken and lamb are their best imo. their short ribs used to be amazing but now are merely good since they replaced the salsa verde with something else. venison is nice but a touch on the small side, will be fine if youre eating entrees too

the chicken in particular is one of the very few places (non gook) that ill order a chicken main, i do think it is the best chicken main ive had in perth

i think youll be fine. to put into perspective we usually spend $80 +/-$5 and that is for an entree and main each, a couple of shared sides, a couple of shared desserts and probably a bottle of wine (or a touch more) and a couple of coffees this is for 4 people and it is usually too much food

mains are all under $30, pastas are pretty cheap and entrees are affordable too. you do need 2 courses to be full but not 3

miensie
November 18th, 2010, 07:39 AM
Yeah, you shouldn't have a problem, MD.

Most times I eat there (main, dessert and sides), it comes to about $90-something for two people.

Agree about the artichoke ravioli - reminds me a bit of the ravioli at Perugino. And that's a very good thing :)

^^

shame about the ribs - the one time I have been, thats what I had, they were great! You didn't need an entree to be full if you ordered the ribs!

Dilaz - I went with a work group earlier this year, there were about 8 of us, and with a few beers and wines, we spent almost exactly $50 a head, which was out budget.

The vego with us said it was the best pasta dish he had ever had - can't remember, it may have been fetuccini.

Checked out Cabin Fever (Bon Marche) today just in time for the free coffee deal. Must say the girl who own/runs the place is super lovely. The place is nice, the layout is a little awkward but in keeping with the vibe. Coffee was above average. Slightly weak for my taste but no major complaints. All coffees are $3.50 which is good by Perth standards.
There's no real food options but a nice place to hang out for some coffee/sweets.

I'm not sure what the hell's going on in Perth but the city was almost dead on Saturday except for the malls (avg). Are people too scared to venture outside those two streets? Coupled with the overcast weather it was very depressing. The NB festival (or whatever that was) was also pretty much dead during the day.

^^ NB festival has been a waste of time the last 3 years... but this year was a lot quieter than previous years.

re: frisk, Friday nigh and Sunday arvo were very steady.

They have a petition going to get support for their liquor license, but he isnt asking any customers to sign it, he only mentioned it to me cos I asked him how the process was going... So I asked all the customers in the cafe to sign it and told him to leave it on the counter... when I came back on sunday it had heaps more signatures... :)

havent had any great chilli crab in perth unfortunately, the balance of sweet and hot is always off imo

if you like black pepper crabs i can highly recommend the black pepper snow crab at hawkers. we have it everytime my grandparents come to perth, so around 3-4 times a year. bloody good dish, 1 crab will cost around $150 but is well worth it considering how many people you share it around with.

Wok hei was perfect. It was heading towards bland without the sambal though (which I had to ask for). She gave me the tiniest amount and I was going to go back and get more but that little bit was sufficient. Damn was it hot! A wedge of lemon wouldn't have gone astray either.

My favourite.

The pork chop is tender, juicy, and fucking delicious.

Comes with a big old bowl of Pho as well.

$9.50

on the other end of the spectrum i finally tried novembars today, had a double cheeseburger and small chips. overall quite a tasty burger but if i want a greasy burger ill still be inclined to go to alfred's.

also very cheap, eg a cheeseburger is $7.20 and pretty good size. one negative though is the homemade patty is not very juicy

ryan - no idea sorry. i had heard the jap near dog swamp was ok but i had a terrible meal there a couple of years ago. the jap on walter rd near grand prom is also pretty average

tanpopo in mt lawley is ok for a quick cheap jap meal, they have recently moved to beaufort st where koinonia used to be. eg their bentos whichg include miso, a couple of prawns, some salad, edamame and ginger are $9.50, stupidly cheap

Sanj
November 23rd, 2010, 09:08 AM
it isnt loading for me for some reason but i think ive read it in the past.

perth doesnt have many specialty ramen joints but for me the best ones are nao > daisuke in freo markets (i think that's the name) > arigataya

nao closes at 6 on most weekdays though (9 on friday) but they're also open for lunch. try the spicy chashu ramen with leeks, it is a thing of beauty. i have it nearly everytime im in the city during lunchtime
there is a newish one in the city on barrack (might be called zensaki) where mr samurai used to be but i havent eatenb there. walked in and the food looked a bit meh. my folks also went there and didnt particularly rate it - i tend to trust my dads opinion on jap food as he has been to japan well over 20 times and it's probably his favourite cuisine in the world.

If you want to venture out to Subi there's 'Satsuki' which is owned by the same people as above but probably slightly less adventurous menu. I go there quite often. Most dishes are pretty good but I've had a couple that wasn't too my taste. (stay away from anything that has 'foam').

Here I am. I'll stay true to form and question why it is always the customers who get blamed when some foreigner opens up a crap example of their national cuisine!

because everything that is wrong in the world is the fault of the white man. HAVE YOU NOT BEEN LISTENING?

on a more serious note - i blame us as consumers for lots simply because if we demand better chances are we will get better. if a place in a prime location opens up in melb and doesnt offer good food at fair prices with reasonable service it WILL close down. here it could very well thrive, simply because we are not discerning enough

same goes for apartments, we are not discerning enough and are happy to continue to accept mediocrity

btw it isnt just the customers fault, of course it is also the restaurant owners fault but i do think things are getting better, you are seeing many more authentic places opening up no matter what cuisine.

ah I forgot to tell you. Yeah I did go but they were packed and I couldn't be bothered waiting so ended up getting take away from Chelsea's ;)

I don't think I can pay $30 for a pizza TBH (moral objection). I've been experimenting at home and have managed to churn out some nice ones (or may be my mrs is stroking my ego). So far the plain/wlmeal (50/50) combo with some buttermilk (yup you heard it right) is producing a decent dough. BMilk seems to make it a little more crusty.

When I was in West Perth my lunches mainly consisted of food from the Food Hall. MYO, Roast Turkey or Beef roll, Japanese, chicken kebabs and sometimes that place at the end that did average toasted sandwhiches.

^You're stirring poor Matt, no way is Leederville worse. If Leederville suffers from the 90's, West Perth suffers from the 80's - its a stronghold for Joe's Pie Shop and Miss Maude's. I do miss the Blue Note though.

The PMH cafeteria makes for another option too, fairly standard but a big range and it was always the cheapest place for rolls, salads, hot meals.

Flipside Freo for lunch today and then it's all over folks :(

Got to try everything new that I'd wanted except for Helvetica and The Ellington.

Galeleio last night was awesome. Got the Artichoke, sage and butter ravioli and an entree, duck as a main, with veges as a side and tiramisu for dessert.

Also tried from family's meals the roast beef entree, salmon entree, roast potatoes and venison. My sister won with the dessert - the special for the day was a frozen chocolate mouse which had an amazing texture.

Samboy, as the Flipside guru, chicken or beef?

here's the deal and a lot may not agree with me so take it with a pinch. keep in mind I don't like aoili so the rest of the flavours are important to me. Also I haven't been to the freo one in ages as I typically go to wembley

Chicken - Nicely grilled. Doesn't taste any better than Jus and others and the portions are somewhat smallish.

Beef - Both myself and my Mrs prefer their beef over others. I find the patty itself has a lot more flavour than Jus which for me is bland without the accessories.

In a nutshell if I was going to Flipside for something different I'd go with the beef.

PS: Just to wind up mincy, I find their buns superior to all others in Perth.

ive seen some aioli recipes which called for potato etc in it which would be a pain but the vast majority of aioli you eat around perth is made pretty much as a garlic mayo, which is fucking easy to make

roast garlic, some mustard, touch of vinegar, salt, egg yolks and oil, i normally prefer veg oil instead of olive but sometimes put a touch of EVOO too

For posh nosh I like the hotel buffet spreads Shangri-La and Ritz Carlton Millenia (where i'm staying:banana:especially) http://www.ritzcarlton.com/en/Properties/Singapore/Dining/Default.htm

Rang Mahal at the Pan Pac hotel is also fab for Indian.
Broth is always worth a go too - run by expat Aussies and lovely location

I don't think you can go much wrong really in Singapore food-wise. Even places like Chatterbox at the Orchard Mandarin (open 24/7 for those Hainan chicken rice cravings) is worth a visit. http://www-singapore.com/mandarin-orchard/dining.htm

are the cakes any good? i went into sherbet to order a cake for the weekend but they are fully booked, apparently people are booking way in advance now (they have some orders for march!)

anyone have any recommendations of whre i can order a nice cake from? ideally looking for something lightish, maybe a bit tangy so dont really want a fruit tart or a rich chocolate cake

I got a really light brioche cake from La Galette on broadway Sanj. Simple and tasty. I rarely eat dessert so not an expert but those who were with me loved it as well. From memory it was quite reasonably priced as well...around $22? She told me it's something fairly new so if you're interested it's better to call them first.

ooh thanks for that samby. brioche cake though, what sort of consistency was it? was it still quite brioche like/"bready" for want of a better word?

any you would recommend from there acc?

incidentally la galette replaced maison perry who started off making really nice cakes but lost their way. their orange souffle cake used to be fantastic

No particular recommendations. I've only had their macarons today and some of the smaller cakes in the past. All quality.

For weddings he's booked out until Jan so must be doing something right :)

you're testing the old man's memory! It was almost like a large Choux but softer in texture filled with creme patissiere and rasberry coulis topped with almonds.

They call it a brioche cake but (to me) it didn't taste like your traditional bready brioche. The whole thing was very light and a little tangy (coulis)

If all that makes sense.
