A man walks into a bar... and is read the riot act
By Belle Taylor | View Archive December 10th, 2009, 2:59 pm

It's 2011 and CHOGM Perth is in full swing.

A couple of flunkies from one of the delegations, lets call them William and Harry, have knocked off work for the day and want to go for a drink.

They head into Northbridge and walk into The Shed, a giant "Aussie" themed bar. A couple of hundred 20-something backpackers are throwing drinks down their necks and singing along to Men at Work.

"Let's find something a little more low-key," William says to Harry.

They leave The Shed and stumble upon a groovy little bar called Ezra Pound. It doesn't look like the type of place to play Men at Work. William and Harry order a drink, and go to stand outside where there are tables of people sitting and drinking. No sooner have they stepped foot outside, they are approached by the bouncer who tells them they aren't allowed to stand up with their drinks outside, they have to be seated.

"But there aren't any free seats," Harry protests.

"Well then you will have to go inside and stand in there, you can't stand and drink outside, those are the rules."

Bugger this, Harry and William think. They leave Ezra Pound, grab a taxi and ask to be taken to a good pub. The cabbie takes them to Mt Lawley and drops them off outside The Flying Scotsman.

They order a couple of pints and again, it being a hot Perth night, go to sit at one of the packed tables outside the pub. But as they are about to step out the door they are again stopped by a staff member, this time holding a tray.

"Sorry gentlemen I'm going to have to carry your drinks to your table for you."

"But we are only going to sit over there, its two metres away."

"I know, but I have to carry your drinks, we will get in trouble otherwise."

"What if I just stand up and drink?"

"Are you kidding? You have to be seated."

Our CHOGM visitors are beginning to think this is one very strange town. They decide to head down to Fremantle. They get a cab to the Port city and get off outside the Newport Hotel. The massive bar is packed and everyone is standing shoulder to shoulder, drink in hand. "At least we can have a drink standing up" William says, but the cover band starts up and looks suspiciously like they might start playing Men at Work, so William and Harry head off to find somewhere else.

They walk down the road, past a couple more mega pubs and clubs packed with people until they finally stumble across the X-Wray Café. There is a guy playing guitar on a small stage and a mix of people of different age groups sitting around listening to the music, some eating, some just having a drink.

They walk in and go to the counter to order some food.

"And two beers thanks," William says.

"Sorry, I can't take your drink order here," the waiter replies.

"What do you mean? We just ordered food from you!"

"Oh you can drink, but I have to take your drinks order while you are seated, you are only allowed to order food and coffee at the counter.

"And let me guess - I'm not allowed to stand up with my drink either?"

"Oh no, you can't do that, if you do we'll get a $1000 fine."

William and Harry are confused. And no wonder.

The new liquor licensing laws have had some positive outcomes. On one hand, it's enabled places such as 399, Andaluz and Ezra Pound to open. It's allowed places such as the X-Wray Café to expand their business and serve alcohol without a meal, but they have also created a bizarre hodge podge of rules which seem to serve no purpose other than to confuse drinkers and punish publicans. Giant drinking barns are still allowed to pack people in and let them go nuts while many small bars - the very purpose of which was to encourage a more sophisticated drinking culture - are straight jacketed by a ludicrous mix of council by-laws and licensing restrictions.

The problem is there is absolutely no consistency to the rules. You can stand up outside with a drink at The Brisbane - you can't at Ezra Pound. You can stand up inside with a drink at the Sail and Anchor - you can't at X-Wray café. If you are having a drink at the X-Wray café, and see someone you know on the other side of the room and stand up to wave at them, drink in hand, the cafe can be fined $1000. If you do the same thing at Little Creatures there's no problem.

Do we, the punters, care what sort of license a place has? Of course not, but punters, are expected to know what sort of license every venue they walk into holds, and then the specifics of that license. It's unfair not only to customers but to the small business owners who are putting their heart, soul and life savings into establishing a night life in Perth that doesn't just centre around funnelling alcohol down your throat. Instead of concentrating on serving customers they have to put half their energy into ensuring the miniature of their license agreement isn't being violated. Many of these new small bars are not owned by boards and rich businessmen, but young hospitality professionals who genuinely care about their business and their customers.

Can you imagine trying to explain all that to overseas visitors? Perhaps we should hand a guide out to arrivals at Perth Airport: "Arbitrary rules you are required to abide by in the State of Excitement!" The sub-title can be, "Grab a seat and have a drink in WA! No really, sit down. It's required by law."

As much as Perth people might call the "Dullsville" and "Nanny State" tags unfair, ridiculous restrictions such as these aren't going to help us lose them.

Mate, I was having a beer outside the pub in the dark on a chilly evening this week and it was nice. Funny how we have decent weather for this all year round in Perth yet fail to take advantage of it. Makes a mockery of the whole 'laid back' thing. Never mind that come 12 the fictional duo in the article would have to cut their night shot, with clubs being the only option left. Sigh...

Ahh yeah but winter has hit full swing yet so you might change your mind their ;) But I know what you mean.

Its just so frustrating. Like you say we have the weather to fully enjoy all this but we can't. Yet in London, with their shitty weather, you can.

Fookin hell! I usually pay the equivialant of $7-8 for a pint of Hoegaarden or Leffe Blonde here. Of course it's going to be more expensive in Perth but bloody hell taking the piss much?!

I could understand if these were special imports from independent European breweries but these are just mass market, uber popular, worldwide beers we are talking about.

Boutique beers push price of a pint to $18

BEN SPENCER and JAMIE WATERS, The West Australian
December 12, 2009, 11:18 am

The price of a pint of beer at Perth's trendiest pubs has soared towards $20 just three years after breaking through $10 for the first time.

The dramatic increase stunned the licensee of one of Sydney's most popular pubs, who questioned why West Australians were prepared to pay so much for their beer.

The Garden in Leederville may have been open just a few months but already it is one of Perth's most expensive pubs, charging $18 for a pint of Belgian wheat beer Hoegaarden.

A survey of 21 pubs across Perth found eight now charged $11.50 or more for their most expensive ale, while only two - the St George Hotel in Innaloo and Little Creatures in Fremantle - have kept their prices below $9. The Belgian Beer Cafe on Murray Street charges $16.50 for a Leffe Blonde or Leffe Brune, while the Broken Hill Hotel in Victoria Park asks $15 for a pint of Japanese import Asahi.

Burswood's Paddy Hannan's and Sirocco round out our top five, both charging $13 for a pint of Asahi.

At the Brisbane Hotel, where prices top out at $9.90 for a Stella, general manager Mark Patterson said it was ultimately up to the consumer to decide what they were willing to pay for a beer.

Mr Patterson said imported beers were more expensive to stock and people didn't complain about their prices.

But at the Harbour View Hotel, in the heart of Sydney's exclusive Rocks area where patrons enjoy spectacular views of Sydney Harbour, publican Shannon Hunter struggled to fathom the massive price discrepancy between Perth and the Eastern States.

He said his pub was renowned for keeping its prices low, with the most expensive beer an $8 pint of Becks or Heineken.

Curtin University economist Peter Kenyon said boutique beers had become increasingly fashionable and young professionals were more prepared to splash out.

Professor Kenyon was shocked the increase between 2006 - when Perth pints first cracked $10 - and 2009 was so much greater than the rate of inflation but doubted the price of "bulk commodity" beers such as Swan Lager had moved anywhere near as quickly.

It reflected a two-speed economy where social groups were increasingly defined by where and what they drank.

"Pubs are treating themselves more like upmarket restaurants these days as well, where they have table service and a lot more sophistication," he said.

"You are paying a premium and people seem happier to do it now."

Australian Hotels Association executive director Bradley Woods said Eastern States pubs benefited from gaming machines and reduced transport costs, enabling them to keep their beer prices below those charged in Perth.

As usual, the fun police are insistent on making sure that responsible individuals can't enjoy their night out past midnight. Of course if we want to get drunk and head down the road into Northbridge and pack into a club, no worries!

Ridiculous. I think some new liquor laws came into effect this week. The license at Capitol/amps doesn't allow them to serve shooters any more and one person cannot buy more than drink at a time.

I was at a joint in Sydney last week and the chick behind the bar said she had to changeover to plastic glasses after 10pm and a limit of 2 drinks per person. The place was also crawling with cops. This was just a pool hall.
Moral of the story - The same shit is happening all over Australia not just Perth. Personally I don't care less IF it produced the desired outcome but these sorts of half arsed measures rarely do anything and not easily quantifiable anyway for someone to become accountable.

Last I was in Sydney there were sniffer dogs inside what was essentially a neighbourhood bar... the regulars were not happy...

..Clarences, I know one of the people behind that one..they have spent more money than you would possibly imagine on legal fees and rent of the premises, before they even got a license. Effectively, 6 figures to get a small bar license...

india was a real eye opener, ill tell you more details when i catch up with u sometime as a lot of what i observed/learnt will probably be boring for a lot of people.

what was interesting though was what someone who worked for Austrade (the australian trade commission) told me: "In India there is a line for everything - on the roads, in the shops, in schools, in govt offices etc. the only way to get things done is to get yourself at the front of the line and if you stay at the back waiting for your turn nothing will get done". this proved to be quite true actually.

u have to fight to get things done in india and at one stage i had to fight 3 groups of people at the trade show, including the UK project manager and had to reduce her to tears in order to get compensation cos 30kg of my cheese went missing.

india though is pretty alluring in its own way and even though all the trip was work work and more work apart from the last 2 days in bangalore im definitely looking forward to going back in feb. bombay was just shocking in terms of traffic, ive never experienced anything like it. on one particular day we spent 6 out of 10 hours in the car and that was because we had to go to 3 areas for meetings. yes, only 3 meetings took 10 hours cos of traffic.

i did like the vibe of bombay and to some extent delhi but for me the most liveable city was bangalore, which reminded me a lot of KL actually. the traffic was only really bad during peak hours, the rest of the time was fine. i think u would like bombay more though, it really does have a bit of a buzz.

work wise it was pretty good, the 2 largest importers and distributors in india for cheese (who are known to be extremely fussy) are both very keen to represent our product (as well as a third company) so we now have to work on making the business work.

also still in discussions with someone in bangalore to possibly open a small gourmet store, sort of like simon johnsons meets the boatshed.

one thing i didnt like was the attitude of some people, in particular in delhi, to staff or people they didnt think were on their level, ive never seen such arrogance in my life and i was discussing it with the guy we stayed with in bangalore and he acknowledged it can be difficult giving your kids perspective when you live in a house with a driver, maid, chef and security guard on call for everything u possibly want. i do think that is a downside of having cash in india, it does seem really easy to lose perspective.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

food wise india was awesome, i ate a heap of tasty freshly made desserts like ras malai, kalakand etc. ive always been a big fan of milky indian dessert and when you eat them the same day they are made (and they are made traditionally) they are amazing texturally. i also had a very very impressive jain meal, i got a pic of it actually. there were probably 12 different thingd on my thali and they were all bloody good, which is impressive condiering there was no garlic, onions, potato etc (jain's dont eat them).

i also ate the best kichari (like a spiced porridge) ive ever eaten, which redefined what kichari was to me cos the way it was cooked it was still wet but starchy enough to not be watery, a lot like very good risotto in terms of consistency.

what else, oh yeah i tried indian chinese food, which turned out to be a huge surprise. i ordered szechuan noodles from an indian neighbourhood restaurant and what came out was a lot like mamak mee goreng from singapore but with mee hoon instead of hokkien mee.

i could bang on about this trip for a long time but i think ill leave it at that, this is probably already my longest post.

Jain cuisine

See also: Jain vegetarianism

Jains practice a unique concept of restricted vegetarianism. They do not consume root vegetables such as potatoes, garlic, onions, carrots, radishes, cassava, sweet potatoes, turnips, etc. However, they consume rhizomes such as turmeric, ginger, peanuts. Brinjals are also not consumed by some Jains owing to the large number of seeds in the vegetable, as a seed is taken to be a carrier of budding life. Strict Jains do not consume food which has been left overnight, such as yogurt which may have been set overnight, and have their meals before sunset so that the bacteria inside the food may not be inhaled and accidentally killed. Most Jain recipes substitute potato with Plantain.

sherbet how i love thee. part of what i had to go to india for was to sample what was available there. i mustve tried around 10 cakes and 15 cheeses and all those cakes were either extremely shit or pretty shit with only 1 being somewhat passable.

india is still in its infancy when it comes to things like this, if anyone was in asia in the 80s and 90s they would know what i mean by plastic looking cakes and icing, dry sponge hidden beneath lots of veg fat based whipped cream to try and add some moistness etc. yuck. typical HDB style cakes (singaporeans will know what i mean)

just had some cake at sherbet today, god damn it reminded me why i love it so much. when my grandad was in town last month i bought him cakes from there 2 to 3 times a week and at least 3 flavours each time so ive tried a hell of a lot of cakes from sherbet and not one has been shit. some have been amazing, some bloody good and just a few merely good.

my fvourites: banana walnut and choc cake, hummingbird cake (a touch too sweet but really tasty, btw completely different to hummingbird at rochelle adonis), raspberry, coconut and lemon syrup cake, pistachio and fig yoghurt cake and a couple of their chocolate ones (not the flourless one, i found that a bit too heavy). im sure there are others i have forgotten too.

stinky - ure missing out big time.

im trying to think now, i think their fig, apricot and pistachio yoghurt cake was quite low on the sugar, their red velvet cake wasnt very sweet either (although the cream cheese icing was sweet the actual cake wasnt) and from memory the banana, chocolate and walnut cakes are not too sweet although it has been around 2 months since i ate the last 2 so i could be wrong. their vanilla and raspberry cupcake is too sweet, i agree. the rest of their cupcakes that i have tried have been good but not great.

oh yeah the rapsberry, lemon syrup and coconut cake is not too sweet and is very nice. really moist and the quality of the components shines through in it cos of its simplicity. i bought 4 or 5 slices of different cakes for grandad to choose one for his going away lunch and he chose that one and it was very popular with everyone actually. i definitely recommend it if u like simple moist cakes which arent too heavy (ie no icing, ganache etc) and have a bit of tang (in this case the raspberries)

meals - have tried their brunch tart which is again good but not great, it definitely needs the tomato kasundi or whatever it is that they serve it with but it is still tasty and for $4.50 i think it's pretty good value. ive bought a sandwich for mum and she loved it, i only had a small bit and it was pretty good but a bit hard to judge based on what i had. havent had any other savoury stuff from there, most of the stuff ive had from them has been takeway cos my grandad was living in winthrop and not well enough to travel much so i tended to take the cakes to him.

their banana bread is pretty good as well, ive had that a fair bit and of all the ones ive had only 1 was too sweet but certainly not to the point of being unbearable.

i find beth is very helpful, she's the taller blonde who is normally at the counter. if u tell her what u like and dont like she's pretty good at suggesting stuff - eg she told/warned me the vanilla raspberry cupcake was quite sweet etc.

Lol, yes a compulsive whinger. Where is that Miensie? You fellas going on about bubble tea and coffee-in-a-can made me gag at the mere thought of the overly sweetness of them. I have a secret suspicion that men like things sweeter than women for a reason related to why they also like the air conditioning up. Metabolisms like hummingbirds.

I rarely eat anything with sugar in it, so am hypersensitive to it in cakes and things when I do eat them. Choosing the cake at Sherbet with the bright pink raspberry icing was a bit of a silly thing to do then probably. Maybe Sanj’s banana bread would be a better option.

 u crack me up. speak to beth and let her suggest something. i saw a cake in there today i hadnt seen before, it had rhubarb in it i think (didnt have a close look) so maybe that would be more to your liking cos im assuming it will have a nice tang to it. otherwise the lemon syrup and rapsberry one i mentioned is pretty damn good.

they rotate the cakes they do. that's one thing i enjoy, u could go there a few times a week (as i did last month) and try different cakes every time. it can be a bit disappointing if u have a craving for a particular cake and they dont have it though but i suppose it is still more of a positive than a negative.

gee im gushing about sherbet a bit tonight arent i? sounds like my posts about galileo in the past before everyone got sick of them or kelli dreaming of spending a night with jimmy hoffa. shows how bad the cakes i had in india were.

harvest/sayers? sayers is good but a touch overpriced, shouldnt be an issue with you though. harvest is good as well but notoriously unflexible - eg if a dish states that it comes with scrambled eggs they will not change them to fried eggs. their scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, salmon roe and possibly truffles in 2007 is still probably the best brekky dish ive had in perth and they use abhi's bread which is really nice as well. unfortunately harvest is also overpriced

the 2 of them are my favourites for perth brekky, although i havent been for a while.

cantina brekky is a little disappointing, it is still nice but i dont think it lives up to the standard of their lunch/dinner. i did see some PERFECT looking scrambled eggs come out of their kitchen there a while back though.

ryan - they have the red velvet cake at sherbet today
kelli - theyve also got the rapsberry, coconut and lemon syrup cake but they only had half a cake (i assume from yesterday).

edit - just saw the subi, mt lawley or northbridge thing. if that is the case then i say sayers (i assume leederville is ok).

went to arigataya ramen yesterday on roe st, a new place. was a bit disappointed actuallym the broth was a bit insipid. texture of the noodles was good and the roast pork was also good (although a bit too soft so had lost its texture a bit). definitely not as good as nao.

stopped by chutney garden or whatever its called for a masala tea on the way home, mincy might be worth checking out their veg thali. u get 2 curries, dhal, roti, rice, pappadum and dessert for $10. cant vouch for the food as ive never tried it.

This reminds me. I was in Vic Park on Tuesday on my day off so I remembered you liked Fuji and thought I'd try it for lunch. My girlfriend and I could not find it and we were starving so went to Sebastian's instead. Not too bad for $12.

Then on the way back, I saw Fuji :hammer: Gah!

Apparently you need to take your shoes off when you dine in?

only have to take your shoes off if you are sitting on those 4 or 6 traditional style tables. theyve got another 2 or 3 normal tables and place at the counter for another 8 seats or so and you keep your shoes on for them.

now is a great time to have the hiyashi udon at fuji, just ask for it without the prawn (it is only a tiny bit so not integral to the dish). it is a light cold noodle dish in a bit of broth, very refreshing on a hot day. their tamago nigiri sushi is also the best in perth IMO.

^ Now that I know where Fuji is, I will make sure I try it. Very rarely in Vic Park though.

what did u have mincy? i havent been to perugino in years. have only been twice, once it was amazing and the second time was merely good.

I had the ravioli in sage and butter sauce for entree; field mushrooms on a bed of rocket as a main, creme caramel for dessert. All to die for, I am serious. The main sounds ordinary but I can tell you it is always wonderful.

I think you'd love the chicken liver entree they have, Sank. My boss was muttering stuff about great texture and that it was cooked to perfection.

And the creme caramel. Now, that is real creme caramel.

The service is second to none too.

Sanj
December 17th, 2009, 03:08 AM
lol from memory u had the ravioli and field mushroom last year as well didnt u? those dishes sound familiar. come to think of it so does the creme caramel.

although i realise that pasta is a first course for wogs, in this case wouldnt u have preferred an entree of the mushrooms and a main of the ravioli?

seems to be a bit odd to have a heavier entree than a main.

what was the mushroom served with? any fetta/ricotta etc?

miensie
December 17th, 2009, 03:11 AM
I have pretty much the same thing every year because I just adore it ♥

I wouldn't be able to eat the ravioli as a main and fit in everything else. Seriously, I got 3 pieces of ravioli yesterday for the entree and they are huge. I don't know how he does it but Guiseppe's pasta is constantly good every year. Wish I could make homemade pasta that well.

And I have to have dessert. Must always have dessert :D

That's pretty much it, you wouldn't want any more than 3 pieces or you'd start to get that sick feeling in your stomach.

It's spinach and ricotta ravioli. The best part about it is probably the sauce and the pasta. They do some mushrooms with it too which are superb.

Hey Mincy - I must admit my assessment of a breakfast place will depend mostly on the quality of the coffee and the type of bread used so if you're planning something a little more elaborate I'm not the best person to ask.

However if you want something really new and untested head down to the greenhouse (open on Sat). Might be worth the punt. In fact I'm going to give it a go this Saturday.

hiyashi udon at fuji

Really nice dish - I bumped into sanj and his old man the day I decided to try this dish at Fuji!

In fact, after that dish, I make a point of trying a lot of cold dishes... the cold ramen at Nao is great, the salmon-don at Takas is a really nice lunch meal...a really generous serving of salmon..

However, today I am in Mandurah, and there is only one good restaurant I have discovered..."Taku" japanese restauarnt... they do an amazing version of karage, called Tori-kara..its like a spicy version of karage... mmmmm

This weekend, I am trying a different dim sum - Emma's in vic park - anyone been?

gluggy rice for some of my sushi, average quality seafood for both dad and i, my tuna even had heaps of connective tissue and shouldnt have been served. i certainly hope this is just a once off and ill definitely give it at least 2 more chances but very disappointing.

also, was surprised to see romany restaurant rammed last night. ive only eaten there once when it was in the old location around 5 years ago and it was average. big portions but sloppy heavy handed generic italian food. last night they were really busy and the food didnt look all that special. anyone been there?

Hilarious.

That one you took actually turned out quite nice. Just looks like you were going for a bit of perspective. My whole head made it into the shot so naaah :tongue2:

Gab's pizza looks very greasy! Pasta looks La-Porcheta-ish. Last time I was there the food was good but they were treating me as if I was in the way of something bigger. You can't sit here because there's some corporates coming for dinner (this was @ 4pm). Just snooty attitude.

For all those interested there is a top 50 restaurant guide out at bookshops. Galileo comes in at number 5, Jackson's, Perugino, Star Anise are all up there. Its around $29.95, pink and white cover. I can get more info tomorrow night..

Last night at Funtastico started off great. The entrees were fantastic. We must have waited well over an hour for mains to come with the only sign of delay from the staff was the free bread. The people sitting next to us came in after us and left before our mains even got there! The staff had an extrememly complacent attitude towards service too.

if you wanna go to funtastico, have dinner first and pop in for a coffee and cake. Atleast you can't go wrong there.

Thought I'd give Greenhouse a go today. To gauge their attitude towards service I rocked up around 1PM (packed), made sure I was seated first and then told them I just wanted a couple of coffees. (Would have boycotted if they'd said no). The waitress (somewhat young/new/useless/trying but not quite there) sort of hesitated for a bit then said ok. Came back 2mins later (presumably after talking to the mgr) and said not a problem we'll get you the coffees.
The coffee was OK. Not fantastic (the roast isn't my favourite) but you can tell the barista is good and knows how to pull a shot.
I subsequently ordered some food and asked them to for minus one ingredient. Surely enough it came out with that ingredient so I politely send it back. They brought it back as I wanted and told me there's no charge (good form).
Overall it seems like a nice place, novelty value is high and it's pulling the crowds right now. Hopefully they can get a little more mature with their service once the kinks are ironed out but so far I'm happy to say it's not on my blacklist (not that they care)

I had the seared red mullet Sanj. It was nice. We were seated outside in the heat so that took away a little from the experience but that's not their fault as it was full when we got there. Overall the prices are reasonable (for Perth).
Check out their late eats menu, I have a feeling there's a couple of things on it that you may fancy trying.

Barista there is not too bad...massive coffee nerd though, to the point where all coversations basically revolve around coffee. Using a three group la marzocco linea from memory, coupled with Bannister downs and 5 senses?

yeah the coffee was good. I just didn't like the blend that much but that's more of a personal taste I suppose. Not sure if it's 5 senses as I normally like the 5S blends. My pet hate is when coffee shops give you a long black in a massive cup and the double shot still tastes like water. These guys have the size of the cup spot on.

So I had another look at the restaurant book Sanj, but forgot to check the author of the list. For some reason when I was flicking through the first time I saw Galileo as number 5, when in fact it is 21.

As for the whitey ranking, its pretty high. There were maybe 2 or 3 non- Australian/European places in the top 20, one of which was Nahm Thai.

But as I said before, the top ones are Jacksons, Perugino, Star Anise, Must (maybe), Zafferano (maybe). Its not a special list but the first I have seen in bookshops similar to the Sydney & Melbourne list. Its good pretty good info on the restaurants etc.

Ventured down to Greenhouse this morning for brekky.

1. Requested a table for 2. They didn't ask inside or out and automatically guided me outside. Told them I would like to sit inside and they happily obliged. No big deal.

2. Ordered Coffee, Eggs on Toast, extra toast with jam and Fruit Toast.

3. Coffee was very good. Poached eggs very runny (watery eggwhite not good). Already came with some powdered black pepper on the eggs and no site of salt. Toasts were tiny and missing bits from the top and corner. It looked like the bits had either come off during sloppy slicing or simply fallen off in the toaster. Either way that's not something I would serve in a cafe where they are charging $6 for tiny bit of toast and jam.

4. Fruit Toast - Ok but hardly any fruit in it.

5. Chairs - Look quite nice but very uncomfortable. Not somewhere you can relax with the paper.

At this point I had already made up my mind to add yet another joint to the blacklist and as per my policy couldn't be bothered educating anyone in the concept of attention to detail.

Not until the waitress asked me how it was when collecting the plates to which I responded alright. She said just alright? I really wasn't in the mood to explain but told her the toast wasn't quite right and missing bits. She said ah ok and walked off. Came back 30 seconds later and said she checked with the kitchen and they bake their own bread and it wasn't actually missing anything. I'm not really sure what it all meant as it made very little sense to me but I just said yeah that's fine. Paid up and left.

It's really unfortunate that a place like this with so much potential can't even get the basics right. I'm sure they will be very popular anyway due to shortage of similar places in Perth and the public's general acceptance of mediocrity. Shame really as I was quite looking forward to this but will not be going back anytime soon.

You can make up your own minds.

Seriously, $6 for a piece of toast with jam. I won't bother going there based on that alone, I have a lot of jew blood in me, and I could never, ever, ever, forget an experience like that.

Perth people have a strange desire to be ripped off on everything, Greenhouse should do fine (they would probably do even better if they put the price up to $8 for toast).

Went to Eden in Fremantle today, to try the vegetarian Laksa - verdict - fantastic. $8.50. Girl had the Nasi Lemak (also $8.50) - tasted great also. Both meals were of generous size. Ambiance/decor - cafe.

2 slices Nate. (pathetic ones though)
I know why they are charging so much. It's because the jam came in a deep jar (must be the in thing a-la ezra), where you had to dive in with a utensil to scrape off whatever you could find on the bottom. That sort of inconvenience doesn't come cheap mate ;)
As for their home made claim, sure it probably is home made (ie costs them even less) but I've made bread at home which is just as good if not better in my dodgy oven.
don't get me started.....

off to a mini tour of Asia next week so I'll get my value fix for the year. Can't wait for some awesome and cheap food!!

I remember when my jew blood really came to the forefront. I forget the name of the restaurant (Leederville strip I'm pretty sure), but the waitress asked whether I wanted the regular or large seafood pasta, and I started asking whether the large came with significantly more seafood, or just pasta, which is cheap. Mate gave me a look of shame in response, and a "uh" from the waitress.

I had hope over Greenhouse. The prices themselves, while not amazing, I could tolerate. It's the bad poached eggs that will keep me away. I just hate watery whites.

Was ripped off pretty well in Freo, maybe a year ago (the cafe was on Market St, near the Subway. I think it's where the Billie & Rose store now is). Remember it being a pretty decent cafe, but paying $9 for a "Manhattan Sandwich", which consisted of two slices of toasted bread with chicken breast, apple, and avocado inside. I mean, it was nice, by not $9 nice.

The bakery in the main part of the Freo capp strip had some pretty damn good poached eggs. Coffee was okay, but I've returned maybe six times this year based just on the quality of the eggs.

I went to Must for dinner Friday night. Great service but it ended there.

While visually it was a nice setting it was very loud. Loud music and loud patrons at the bar. Very hard to have a proper conversation. Could hardly hear the waiter speak.

I had rotisserie chicken and it was quite dry and over cooked. The girl had sirloin steak she asked for medium but came well done.

It was a shame because I heard so many good things about this place. Anyone else had experience at Must?

Hey Ryan I've been there once on Sanj's recommendation and tried the Charcuterie Plate and some other bits and pieces which were very nice. It was quite a few months ago though.

Although this is what it says on their website

"Inspired by the bistros of Paris , Must Winebar's dining space is casual, friendly and even a little rowdy at times. While it may not be the venue for a quiet romantic dinner, many love affairs have been ignited over the delectable cuisine of Russell Blaikie and his team"

Probably not the ideal place to get a lady friend in the mood ;)

hey ryan, ive only been there 4 or 5 times but every time ive been the food has been on point. the charcuterie plate and savoury souffle with crab bisque are among my favourite dishes in perth (definite top 20).

i dont go on a weekend night though, for the very reason u mentioned (the noise). did u send the chicken and steak back? ive never sent anything back there but it strikes me a place that would handle it quite well.

i reckon give it another go before you write it off, but not on a friday or saturday night. it does attract some dicks then who like to act all sofistimacated and shit with all the posh wine aye. basically a lot of the same twats u would see across the road, but with a bit more cash in their pocket.

having said that the last time i was at the queens the crowd had improved a bit

Sanj

finally went to bouchard today (for lunch).

overall quite impressed. it is still pretty casual for lunch, no real dress code, no tablecloths etc. we had:

Entree
1) seared salmon with crab remoulade and licorice salt - very good but the crab was a touch too acidic. still a nice dish on such a hot day

2) scallops with i think celeriac puree (although it really isnt the season so maybe it was something else) and some sort of foam. only tried a small bit but it was very nice as well

3) cured ocean trout with wasabi ice cream and soy jelly. probably the best entree actually, flavours worked together perfectly, again a great summer dish

Mains
1) snapper with broadbeans, pancetta etc. very good but again tasted just a little bit too acidic. perfectly cooked summery dish though.

2) pancetta wrapped salmon with cauliflower puree - heard it was pretty good, salmon was a touch overcooked

3) lamb 2 ways with sweetbreads beignet and a few things - heard it was very good, i ate mums beignet and it was unfortunately overcooked so a bit tough

i also had a souffle that was tasty but a touch too sweet and actually a bit grainy at the bottom, they had lined the bowl with granulated sugar instead of castor i think.

also had a couple of complementary dishes in between courses - a lamb gnocchi with minted peas and rosemary foam. pretty good, the foam was actually really flavourful but
the gnocchi (it was more like a ravioli actually, i think the waitress made a mistake) was a touch tough.

also got some dark chocolate ice cream with an orange foam. by this stage i had seen enough bloody foam but it worked really well in this case.

the waitress could do with some more training, she forgot a few things, ALWAYS forgot who ordered what etc but she was still charming and she could just about get away with it (cute french accent)

overall id go back for sure. they do need to remove a few things from their menu though, there was a pigs head ballotine and a beef with 12 hour braisded oxtail. great sounding dishes that i would normally have but seriously not in summer and especially not during lunch in summer.

As promised Sanj, I went into Leon for lunch today. I got a chicken wrap with yoghurt and garlic sauce and a Cloudy Apple juice with Lime & Mint Leaves. The wrap was quite disappointing. They might as well have called it a lettuce wrap with a sprinkling of chicken. The pita was also quite dry. Perhaps I just caught them on an off day though - I'd certainly be willing to give them another chance because the prices were very good. Alternatively, this could be the exact reason why the prices are good. The juice was very good. The hot meals looked like they would be better than the wraps and I'd be inclined to try one of those next time.

Probably my favourite affordable ''chain'' here (can it be called a chain if there are only 3?) is Hummus Bros. A bit too expensive for what it is at dinner and on weekends, but at weekday lunch prices it represents amazing value. Very, very tasty, large servings and the service is always excellent.

mincy - how was sayers?

To be honest, apart from the coffee (which was amazing), I was a bit disappointed.

All of us definitely got the overpriced feeling. Their full breakfast is not worth $22. The Merchant does a better rendition of a full breakfast for under $20. I'm normally full after eating there but after Sayers, I was not even half-full.

It confounds me why the hell establisments insist on serving their breakfast with one measly piece of bread. This piece is probably equivalent to 1/2 the size of a normal piece of bread. Seriously, wat.

You would've seen it on Facebook but for the others to get an idea of what I'm talking about, this is what I had:

id be pretty annoyed with that. looks like theyve gone the route of taking the piss to see just how far they can push it.

how was the potato cake? as weird as it sounds it looks cold

Yeah, the first photo is what I had. The second is the full breakfast with meat.

This is what the full breakfast is supposed to consist of:

'full breakfast of poached, scrambled or fried eggs, potato cake, 3 beans, grilled tomato, field mushroom, italian sausage & bacon or take off the meat for our vegetarian full breakfast, add pumpkin & feta frittata & spinach'

Do you see 3 beans, potato cake or pumpkin and feta frittata on my plate? No. However, I didn't order so I'm not sure what I friend asked them to take off/put on for me.

I didn't try the potato cake but my two girlfriends who had it didn't finish it. Too sour apparently and not in a good way.

Speaking of sour, their mushrooms are gross. There's vinegar or something in them. I had a stomach ache not long after. Ugh.

I was pretty pissed to be honest. Live and learn. Never again. I'd go back for the coffee though as it's something awesome.

The rasberry and rocket thing was $14.50.

Thanks for the heads up Mincy. I've had coffee there before and loved it but never had the breakfast. Another place to avoid. Bloody hell we're running out of options!! (and that's exactly how these places survive).

so u are saying yours was the full veg breakfast? that plate was $22????

that is worth not a cent over $15. 3 eggs on 1 slice of ciabatta with 1 tomato, a few mushrooms, some spinach and half an avocado for $22??? i wouldve been livid.

i actually wouldve sent it back and asked for the frittata. if they had run out they shouldve done more than give u half an avocado in place of the frittata.

looks like i wont be going there either. it was overpriced before but not to this extent and the food was really good.

You'd be on the money I'd say. Place was packed when we were there and it was past the usual 'breakfast' time. Constant stream of people coming in. A few regulars obviously as the waitors there greeted them by name.

The Merchant does crap coffee but good breakfast. This place does good coffee but crap breakfast. ARGH!

The only other place I used to find consistently good for a very simple egg/toast breakfast was Zekka. Sure enough they changed their bread all of a sudden and lost its appeal for me. Might go back next year and see if anything's changed.

That is not a good sign. I was planning on heading there during my Christmas break to try their breakfast. This just gets better and better.

so u are saying yours was the full veg breakfast? that plate was $22????

that is worth not a cent over $15. 3 eggs on 1 slice of ciabatta with 1 tomato, a few mushrooms, some spinach and half an avocado for $22??? i wouldve been livid.

Haha hard to believe, I know. I saw $22 and thought, oh, goodie, a good sized breakfast! Wrong

i actually wouldve sent it back and asked for the frittata. if they had run out they shouldve done more than give u half an avocado in place of the frittata.

lawl I know you would've. I've seen your displeasure in action :okay:

I was hungry, tired and hot. Could not be bothered sending it back and waiting to be completely honest. Even after adding the missing bits, it's still not worth $22.

Went to Eden in Fremantle today, to try the vegetarian Laksa - verdict - fantastic. $8.50. Girl had the Nasi Lemak (also $8.50) - tasted great also. Both meals were of generous size. Ambiance/decor - cafe.

Just saw this.

That's great, Nate. I'm so happy you enjoyed it!

Were the portions enough for you?

OH YEAH! I NEARLY FORGOT. WENT TO A DIFFERENT DIM SUM ON THE WEEKEND.

"Emma's" in Vic Park.

First, the price - five of us, total price, $100. We REALLY ate a lot, tried way-too-many dishes, its a good method of finding out whats good, quickly,

The food - not bad. The pork dishes, crispy pork belly, braised pork ribs, were nice. The Chicken feet (ginger) were the best I have ever had in Perth. However, the fried squid had way too much MSG, a pet hate of mine. Other steamed dishes also had a noticeable shake of MSG. The food came thick and fast.

Overall - if you're looking for great Dim Sum, this isn't really it. If you get dragged along, its not all bad.

Its the type of place you hate to give a bad review, because they are SOOO close to being a winner.

to put it into perspective, i was looking through the menu for rockpool bar & grill last night and their squid ink fettucine with squid, smoked bacon, squid ink and chilli, which is the best squid ink dish ive ever eaten in my life, only costs $25. this at a high profile restaurant at the crown which cost millions in fitout and where they need something like 240 covers a day to break even.

the best breakfast dish ive ever had in australia, at cafe mint in surry hills, costs $11.90 and that is a dish with lamb mince, hummous, roast onions, zaatar toast etc. at that same meal my mum had a great merguez sausage dish with couscous which was huge and that also was $11.90

who the fuck are these cunts at sayers to think that they can get away with those prices and portions? also, if u even think of charging those prices the food has to be absolutely perfect, which it obviously wasnt.

i really do hope the cunt goes out of business for showing that little respect to his customers.

I'd have to agree.

The people there did not seem at all fazed by the portions or prices. There was a table that came in after us and I specifically waited to see their reactions when their food was bought out. Nada. One guy there ordered poached eggs. It came out on a huge white plate with two eggs wobbling and trying to hang on to the one tiny piece of bread. He showed no signs of disbelief.

As much as I wholeheartedly agree that they deserve a good kick up the rear end, I don't think it'll happen anytime soon. I did get a bit of a 'too cool for school' vibe from the place.

I've never seen $11-something for a good breakfast, Sanj. How I wish.

Ahh I didn't see that bit. Wasn't my choice so I can't be to blame. :) We were going to go to Jacksons but was fully booked.

hey ryan, ive only been there 4 or 5 times but every time ive been the food has been on point. the charcuterie plate and savoury souffle with crab bisque are among my favourite dishes in perth (definite top 20).

i dont go on a weekend night though, for the very reason u mentioned (the noise). did u send the chicken and steak back? ive never sent anything back there but it strikes me a place that would handle it quite well.

i reckon give it another go before you write it off, but not on a friday or saturday night. it does attract some dicks then who like to act all sofistimacated and shit with all the posh wine aye. basically a lot of the same twats u would see across the road, but with a bit more cash in their pocket.

having said that the last time i was at the queens the crowd had improved a bit

Nah I didn't send it back. Probably should have.

I'll have to try on a weeknight then.

Certainly was some dicks, most of them drinking beer though.

Wages are higher in Perth. Wages here are the highest in the country, almost 20% higher on average. Unemployment is lower, meaning its much more difficult to attract good staff. It's about competition - there is more in Sydney, and once again, its ridiculous that Perth is being compared with Sydney.

The reality is, in Sydney, and Melbourne, there are a shitload of bad, really bad, restaurants, cafes, etc. I know I have had plenty of bad coffees in Melbourne for example (although, it was cheaper).

Perth doesn't seem to do a good, cheap, whitey breakfast. I would suggest that someone needs to open one up, they would clean up.

Dim Sum is the breakfast of champions, and Perth's is as cheap as they come. You will pay on average $10 - $20 a head, for what realistically amounts to all you can eat.

i agree with what ure saying, which is why i said mincys breakfast was worth $15 max based on it being in perth. i dare say it would be worth less if it was in sydney.

i do think the biggest barriers we have to getting value for money in perth are a lack of competition and ther average punter being willing to pay far too much for shite. until and unless ppl refuse to get ripped off we are going to continue to see it happening. having said that, there is a lot of competition in the generic italian sector but even that is overpriced in a lot of cases.

look at chinese food in perth - the public has it in their minds that it is only worth a certain amount and so restaurants cant getaway with ripping customers off. there is also a lot of competition in that sector.

the issue with perth is that we are so starved of quality food (that isnt asian) that we are willing to get bent over for it. dilaz was telling me that some pizzas at ecco are $26. $26 fucking dollars for pizza in a casual setting. madness.

it is the same reason why these twats at sayers can charge $22 for that breakfast or $15 for rocket and fetta on toast.

anyway, i hope SD relays some of the feedback to them.

Hey Guys,
First of all Mincy - I'm really sorry to hear you didn't have a good meal at Sayers. In fact, i'm embarrassed you didn't enjoy it. As much as I am a part of the crew there, my area of expertise is coffee - so I am not really one to comment on the food.

If you were to ask me what I recommended for breakfast, I definately wouldn't have said the big brekky, I too think it is overpriced. For $10, you can get a serving of eggs on toast - and if you order scrambled eggs, you get about 4 eggs in that scramble. Probably the best value thing on the menu.

I can't comment on the raspberry mush, as I don't do mushrooms myself, period. Personally, I'm a big fan of the 3 bean claypot, with babaganoush, pesto and a poached egg - $14.50. Yeah, its not a super cheap place to get breakfast, and some things may be a tad overpriced. But I have seen the invoices for some of the food purchases...a fuck load of money is spent on sourcing really good quality food, for instance Blue Cow Cheese, Pioneer farm free range eggs etc.

Just out of interest which day did you go in? I'd like to know who the barista was if it wasn't me, so I can pass on the regards in that area. I've been working hard on changing the perception of the othetr guys there that the coffee is infact another dish, not just an ancillary to food. I've been teaching the guys how to pour a great shot, and trying to pass on some tips on pouring consistant, fast rosettas so that every cup tastes great. Our custom blend is great with food - nice and smooth, with caramel and chocolate tones.

But all in all, I''ll pass on the feedback for sure, and I hope it won't deter you from coming back in again - I'd love to prove you wrong on your return - because everyone knows that one bad review means 10 less people turning up, and I'm sure that Mark would be really disappointed to hear that you didnt enjoy the food. Oh, and don't order the big breakfast!

It was yesterday around 11.15am. We were there until 12.30pm or so. I definitely had no complaints about the coffee whatsoever as it was fantastic. My best friend loved her flat white too. It was just strong enough for me with no bitterness/burnt aftertaste. Just amazing. So if you helped the baristas with that, then kudos are in order.

That is great to hear. I hope they take it on board as pretty much all four of us agreed to never go back again.

But like I said, I would for the coffee :)

As for the breakfast, I might sometime in the future. Give it a good while before I venture back and order something different. But we'll have to see. No promises though ;)

ultimately i realise i was very harsh this morning (and on a bit of a warpath) but although some of my words were probably a bit too harsh the sentiment was certainly deserved. it also upset me as i know sayers is a place that in the past was run with a lot of passion etc.

yeah have fun. if ure looking for any places to eat in singapore www.chubbyhubby.net and www.ieatishootipost.sg will cover everything u need.

the first one is one of my favourites but focuses on more of the non-singaporean food but the second one is almost exclusively hawker food related. for example at the moment they are having a poll for the best hokkien mee in singapore. singaporean hokkien mee (completely different to the malaysian one) is my all time favourite singaporean hawker dish.

Thanks Sanj, I hadn't come across those websites before. Our food list is getting longer. I don't think I'll be doing anything else by the looks of it. Just as well I've seen plenty of temples, palaces and museums so no need to waste time doing anything other than eating.

I'll be away for 3.5 weeks (somewhat flexible), going to S'pore, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. Will play it by ear along the way.

Oh-so-jealous.

You will have so much fun! And I think you definitely deserve it :)

I'm a kept man and a housebitch. Isn't that every man's dream?

PS: I won't rub it in Mincy. You suckers have a great xmas!!

You two, Samby  though I'm sure we'll talk before you leave?

If not, boo :(

Have fun Samboy.... you are going to trip balls in a month when someone asks you for $6 for a slice of toast!

This will happen, any which way you cut it.

yeah thanks mate!! This is what keeps me sane. Get out of Perth a couple of times a year and get it out of (or into) my system. Then come back and hibernate for a while and talk shit on here.

$6 for a toast or $10 for a seafood feast (OD'd on lobster and crabs) in Manila!!

I subscribe to the same theory of living in Perth, always have.

Also in Singapore, there is a book available called Makansutra.... if you are into Hawker food, its a bible.

edit:

ieatishootipost.sg is pretty reliable - sanj gave mne the tip last time.

Check this one out, if you want dim sum that is high quality, very reasonably priced, very nice surroundings, amazing service:

hey samby, any chance of u picking me up a bottle or 2 of aligue from manila? it is something i read about 6 months or so ago and id love to try it. u'd definitely have to declare it and it might get through, might not. either way i would of course pay you for it.

it is some pinoy crab fat thing that is meant to be really tasty.

I'd be more than happy mate next time I'm in Phils. Not going this time around. That stuff is pretty potent (it's like KFC X20 in your veins). Strike what I said I know that was blasphemous! Some of the best ones are sold in 'rural' areas by the side of the road. Will def keep in mind for ya. Customs should be interesting but you never know. Money's not an issue Sanj.

Sanj

awesome, thanks. yeah i get the feeling it will be ridiculously rich but damn tasty. i saw a recipe for a pasta dish with aligue in it on chubbyhubby i think.

nate is also right re makansutra. it is meant to be really good.

went by greenhouse today and had a look at their lunch menu. Pretty reasonably priced imo. Pizza $12, salads 14-16, full mains 20-25. They've also got a coffee window open closer to st georges.

$12 for pizza (if it's a full pizza and not just a slice) is good value.

Why are the salads more expensive?

had lunch at the prophet again today, as always it was very good. i struggle to think of many non-asian places where u can get a really good, filling lunch (in a cafe setting with service) for $10/person if u order correctly.

also had the lahmacun last night at turkish kitchen. god damn it always amazes me how it can be so tasty (with such a good base, samboy take note) for $3.50. such amazing value

Last chance for a coffee from me at Sayers until the second half of Jan 2010 for anyone who's got some spare time between 7am-1.30pm tomorrow. Maybe a precaution for the noise from the coffee machine or maybe music earphones. Glad to find out you knew what ear plugs were anyway. You had me worried there for a while.

This morning I had breakfast at my place, on a recommendation from myself.

I decided to have the Apricot Weet Bix Bites. The milk was slightly watery, and about 2-3 degrees warmer than I would have liked. The cereal itself was crunchy, and I was pleased to find that the apricot pieces were plump. I was a little worried about that since I've had some bad experiences before with dry, shrivelled-up fruit. I've also had some crappy apricots, too. :hahano:

The service left a lot to be desired. The guy that brought me my food simply plonked a bowl, spoon, carton of milk and box of cereal on the table. He then proceeded to sit in my seat! And he didn't say a word to me the entire time. :ohno:

Overall, I'd have to say that I would go back again, but my living there might have something to do with that.

Nah, but I think I know the guy you mean. And Dilaz apparently studies at some faraway institution on the dark other side of the river. ;)

I enjoyed that unit for the most part. Brian was very entertaining, and seems to really know his stuff. What did he have to say about Cityvision? How long ago was he a member?

I think they called it linguine wrapped in eggplant.

It was pretty good for $12. Bits of it were hard from where the cheese had sorta melted together. Pasta itself wasn't too great.

But I quite enjoyed the rest of it.

Yeah, the day I was looking fort Fuji. We were so hungry so we just chose one at random.
