footscray is 99% ethnic... weird off-cuts, asian fish, plenty of duck... if it's an animal, not much won't be up for sale when it's been chopped up... set-up on tha ground level of a multi-storey carpark, it's old and dirty... it smells like asia wet market stench... :p

i guess it all depends on just how big they allocate areas for meat/seafood/fruit&vege/other goods...

looking at tha list, i'm hoping you'd get a really good selection of shops... i just enjoy so much now having tha choice of 3-4 places selling tha same meats but you can gaze amongst them all and see tha differences, not only that, but also get to build a relationship with them... eg. when i go to footscray or queen vic, i go to different stalls depending on what type of meat or meat cuts i'm after... it's funny how, you notice differences and so you tend to go for one stall that sells that better quality/cut etc... it'll be interesting to see whether you get to have this set-up there...

market fly-by

There were four butchers and four large fruit and veg stalls (the four of them virtually took up the back wall, which is about 100m in length). Some dry goods places. I can't remember how many fish places, I remember seeing at least one large stall for fish. I'm not sure how much of a genuine market feel it will generate though, Perth has an uncanny knack of creating sterility.

The friend I mentioned has butcheries at other markets and they seemed to have a fairly standard range from memory, but I think they cater to the market in those outer suburbs a bit. I think Morley will be much bigger, would attract a different crowd and many more people. She came from China in her 20's and has a few pointy things to say about how pedestrian things are here and she is a chef as well. I think she would only need encouragement from customers to stock different things.

I remember your photos from the Footscray markets, those looked great and I remember at the time hoping these ones would turn out like that. The layout is certainly similar.

Malaga is good for the fruit and vegetables, similar to how Subi is. Although Wanneroo is best for that, it's just too far away.

People have mentioned the Canning Vale markets before, but I've never found them, I thought it was a wholesale market? Do they have a section open to the public?

well close to a train-station would be ideal, i don't disagree with that, but i think tha concept to have a shopping hub in morley is good also... even if you're not into shops at tha galleria, you have to agree it's a good precinct to have in the end..

i like tha set-up at south melb markets, however, tha meat and fish section get away with robbery becos it's "south melb" crowd... so over-priced, i resent that.

matt, tov would be ideal for a inner city market, any strategy/push for one?

back end of mciver station/lord street would be ideal for me... :)

Yes, if I go to Malaga, it's only for the veg. Queen Victoria markets is more my idea of markets than South Melbourne though. They didn't even have any fruit and veg there. There were a lot of boutique stalls, coffee places, chocolates, cake etc in glass cabinets. I think markets should be a bit rough and tumble with piles of fresh produce just out of the ground, mainly seconds from the local growing area, where you can walk in with $30 and your pointy elbows and come out with your weekly groceries. Not good with kids though, unless you're trying to lose the blighters :).

Kelli
December 16th, 2010, 02:55 AM
Yes, the more options the better and the closer the better. As to Malaga...it is relatively good quality and cheap when the alternatives are Coles, Woolies or IGA! Now I just mostly use a couple of small, local veg shops rather than go out there. That is why I'm hanging out for Morley.

The crowds @ Malaga on the weekends are a sad indication of the lack of choice in Perth. The Fruits/Vegies can be purchased at any Asian shop, the foodhall is pure junk and the remainder isn't worth the effort.

It's true regards choice. I can't believe the crap that my local Coles sell for inflated prices, $3.50 for half a scungy cabbage the other day, they'd only get away with that in a market that has little alternative. $14 a kilo for capsicum at the IGA. Even shopping at Fresh Provisions is better value.

Not sure I agree about the asian grocery shops vs Malaga though, not for the price, variety and the quality of particularly fruit. Even though I said I think markets should be lively enough to need elbows, I used to go to Malaga on Fridays, because everything was fresher and there were no crowds.

"Shiraz Persian Restaurant" opening next week, near Coles, just off Newcastle on one of the "new" side streets.

Opposite "Endless Delight" Chinese, which is now open.

Homemade ravioli with spinach and ricotta cooked in a sage and butter sauce.

Herb grilled mushroom on a bed of rocket, pecorino and diced tomatoes.

Creme caramel, pear and almond tart with fresh cream.

That ravioli and creme caramel is worth waiting a year for.

They had a few more vegetarian options this year actually.

I was fit to burst. Could've rolled all the way home. Didn't even have room for dinner.

The way they do chicken livers looks very tasty. But I recall you're not a fan of the livers.

They also had four specials that day - octopus, salmon, veal and something bucca (?).

Set menu had 11 entree options and 9 mains (not including the specials) if I rememeber correctly.

The service there is something wonderful. They were so packed they had to creat four additional tables in the main entrance

I'll have to investigate these then, thanks. I can't help it, I do like a bargain. My mother said to me once, 'if everyone spent money like you, the economy would go down the toilet'.

Just going back the rejection of the liquor application for The Latin, what is likely to happen next, is anyone in the know? Surely there is going to be some departmental squabbling that must result in something?

I mean, the EPRA has just spent millions of tax $$$ trying to revitalise this part of William St, and then RGL has just gone and rejected the applications. It would be interesting to see if Barnett has a quiet work with the commissioner or something. There is a clear conflict of interests going on here between the police/nanny state and the active city rhetoric the govt is putting out..

I would be interested to read about why the public interest clause was put into the legislation given that it wasn't there when the new law were originally enacted a few years back. Who pushed for this, and were these consequences foreseen? Does anyone have the balls to repeal the clause now that it's clearly proven to be ineffective in promoting the kinds of venues that Perth needs.

We went to Must and had a lovely night. I figured I'd judge it on the standard bearers and went the staples - charcuterie plate and then the roast chook. Creme brulee for dessert. All washed down with a nice Howard Park Riesling. No complaints at all and exemplary service.

I did comment to my wife that this restaurant game is not exactly rocket science. How hard is a roast chook, nice mash and gravy and beans, and a starter of a slice of pork pie, some pork pate, and a tin of gourmet cat food;) But they do it superbly!

what kind of bullshit excuse did they give you for the wait? that is ridiculous!

How hard is a roast chook, nice mash and gravy and beans, and a starter of a slice of pork pie, some pork pate, and a tin of gourmet cat food;) But they do it superbly!

ah cool glad to hear you enjoyed it. i love the charcuterie plate, theyve been doing it consistently well for a long time, as far as i know theyre the only restaurant in perth with a full time qualified charcutier.

When I asked the waitress, she didnt really speak much english, she just said "Sorry I will check" "Coming soon maybe 10mins" then when I said we wanted to cancel and leave they just "ok, sorry"... It wasnt really that busy either!

I told my father in-law, he thought it was the funniest shit out!! Then he said we should gone to hawkers!! haha

what did you have btw?

We had some szechuan pickles for entre - fucking delicous, with lots of szechuan pepper corns..

I can't remember the name of the prawn dish, but it was a flash fried (wokked) prawns (good size), with lots of chilli, garlic, and these minitaure peanuts, etc... prawn heads were probably the tastiest I have had in some time.

Cummin Lamb - like a braised lamb crusted in cummin and spices with some veges... I had a really similar dish to this in China, but with dog meat. haha. Lots of small pieces of lamb, still on the bone (most not on the bone)

Standard kai lan with garlic, just to test them.

Rice and tea.

Fed four people (we weren't super hungry), cost us $60! Presentation and service was a cut above the standard Northbridge chinese restaurant.

Pigs Ear was sold out.

There were a lot of interesting dishes, to be honest, I can't wait to go back, so if you're keen any time, perhaps when you call me about the monitor .

Hey good idea, lets make a date this week. My shout, you just bring the monitor. Any night but tonight.

It lacked that strength of flavour, Luka. Wasn't hot/spicy by any stretch of the imagination.

Went to Paul Bocuses' restaurant in Lyon the other night named Le Sud, or The South in French. Pretty amazing food and wine, without being over the top.

I had a plate of Jamon for entree, while the others had Foie Gras, Escargot and i forget what king prawn tails.

Mains ranged from Occo Bucco to Salmon to Lamb Shouder, and many other amazing items.

For desert, I had to go to the Creme Brulee...did not disappoint.

At the moment, we are staying in a fully catered ski house, which was built by the guy who is looking after us, and whos mother is cooking for us. Last night we had Raclette - im sure you dont need an explanation for that. SO much cheese and meats...amazing food to eat...especially after a hard day skiing!

It's better than the nothingness that currently exists, but I'd prefer (haven't heard that old saying on here for a while!) a few independent growers being allowed to open up kiosks on the weekend for example. In London, there are just random streets that on a Sat morning turn into a markets with lots of traders opening up stalls. It would be good to encourage this sort of thing in Perth.

So update on Joseph Anthony. I finally received the 3rd shirt I ordered back in April. It has taken 8 months and numerous calls/visits to get a shirt.

Its a different excuse everytime I speak to them. The latest one was about how hectic it was lately. I have never seen anyone else in the shop when I go in there and the exact same stock is on the shelf from when I first went there back in April.

So the shirt I got was ok but there are some defects. Nothing that effect it too much but compared to the first 2 I got its quite poor.

I can very highly NOT recommend them for ANYTHING as their service is just plain terrible and quality fairly average at best but a complete rip off for what you pay.

Yeah yeah I know - Hong Kong.

Office workers love it.

140W office workers will love not having to cross the street to get it.

Perth is still very much a 9-5 town so food places that cater to the lunch rush make a bunch of sense. I'm hoping the pub on the corner of 140W has a casual Greenhousey type vibe about it.

^I wonder where those bars are being proposed for? There is not much vacant at the moment, virtually all the Match shopfronts are gone. There is a nice old deco place on Guildford Road that has been stripped and is being renovated, I've wondered what is being planned for there.

I've wondered if the naming of the alleys is just affectation, or if it is because places down there will need an address.

Do you know which one Sanj?

Rifo's was ok five years ago, when it was a cheap and cheerful and you could get a quick dinner for between $8 and $13. It had a genuine italian bistro feel, down to the strong muddy coffee. The menu hasn't changed, just the price, which has about doubled, I think the son took over is what happened. It's not the kind of food that warrants the price any more, is all. I actually quite like their salads.

202 whatley i think, 2 shops to the left of that gooky furniture store which had wenovation sale written on it recently

apparently one is in one of the match shops, no idea re the rest. i imagine the print supplies shop will disappear soon. there ia golden express that looks like an average lunchbar that is opening up very soon as well, looked nearly ready to go last week.

Oh, that is interesting, thanks. What is there at the moment is not that exciting from memory, an art place and alternative therapy place type of thing.

There are interesting characters in those shops, the print supplies fellow and particularly the Austrian in the antique store...mad as a box of frogs.

re NB - very hard to say without knowing what youre looking for but my favourite overall NB restaurant is easily hawkers (it is one of my favourite 2 restaurants in perth)

btw it is closed for holidays at the moment

Damn, that would have been the type of thing, but I'll keep it in mind for another time. I suppose we'll just take pot luck, although if I have no strong opinion ready, we'll probably end up at Viet Hoa.

Another nice meal in Qld, Spirit House on the Sunshine Coast. It's built around and over a lake boardwalk style in tropical gardens, all outdoors but under cover and it was raining the whole time we were there, nice. Sauces to die for!

Agree with the whole "fuck Rifos" sentiment. Especially considering you have considerably better coffee shops literally minutes away - Sherbert and Milkd. The multipurpose centre across the road from the Polish church should help liven the place up, as will the eradication of the temp Rifos car park. I wouldn't be surprised if some day soon the IGA next to Leo's is shutdown, considering there's another IGA a few hundred metres away.

Maylands has a good place in my heart, I can't wait to see it become the next hot spot.

kelli, is that cod? looks so good! yum...

The lady said it was a snapper, a spiny something snapper. It was actually my least favorite dish there, the fish was beautiful and fresh and was interesting how they cooked it (the whole thing was coated and deep fried) but the sauce wasn't flavour balanced. You'd expect something with tamarind in the title to have some element of sourness, there wasn't enough sweetness and there was too much salt (from someone who loves saltiness). The sauces on the other dishes were lovely though. Sauces are my thing.

I guess you are talking about the Maylands one. I'm always happy with the North Perth one. Not tried Maylands. My wife can't drink the coffee from That place on London St even though many love it. I think she's narrowed it to a brand of coffee now.

I drink black coffee too, with or without milk on the side, which with the milk frothing thing out of the picture, there is so much less chance of it going wrong as well. It seems like the filter isn't working properly, it's gritty and tastes of that mouldering dishcloth taste that dirty machines have.

I'm going to be controversial and say that Macdonalds has the best and most consistent coffee in Maylands :ohno:. From their machine, not the cafe.

I haven't tried the North Perth one, maybe it is a case of stretching their expertise too thin by opening another one? Most people like the Maylands one that I speak to though, I suppose there are just different tastes.

Did you just call me a c**t?

There are places I much prefer to Milkd in Maylands (Dancing Goat or Elixr for a start), but as far as coffee shops go, it's better than most of the junk that's produced.

I'm yet to have a bad experience with Sherbet, with their coffee at least.

Sorry, I'm a little violent with my opinions sometimes. Lots of people have said that they like Milkd to me before, so I wasn't just saying you were a c**t...everybody is :).

I had a couple of dodgy ones early on at Sherbet, maybe they've got more consistent. They aim to please though and they get it, they always seem to make my iced black coffee just how I like it even though it's not a standard coffee.

I make my own at home mainly in a $2 Japanese coffee maker, it's perfect every time in my humble opinion, nowhere else measures up is all :).

Has anyone tried the new Dome? You'd think the world headquarters would be setting the standard. Some Dome cafe's get it together some of the time.

Just discussing with my wife and Maylands Milked is run by good crew so no reason the coffee should be bad. As I say my wife was a bit of a gun barista in her day and she just doesn't like some coffee blends or brands nomatter what quality the barista. So maybe Milk'd and you just isn't a good match.

reminds me of a joke. A chemist with an exclusive client list used to offer its a "try before you buy" arrangement on its top range of condoms, and was well known for having very attractive assistants. One day a tramp/homeless man observed this, realised what was going on and shuffled up to the counter and asked for a trial of their finest condoms. The lovely assistant said certainly, and took him to a booth at the rear of the store, and then spoke in to her pager "Jenny, could you grease the cat's arse and bring it to booth 3 thanks."

Also, I went to Suria Cafe in Greenwood tonight. It was awesome, for those who like authentic Malaysian.

Mee Rebus, Chicken Murtabak (with curry of course), Cendol, Ice Kacang, and Teh Tarik, altogether left two people feeling full and content, and came to a total of $26. Ice Kacang was the best I have had in Perth so far.

The other customers chatted to us, one was a couple of Indian Restaurant owners who travelled 30 k's on their day off just to eat at Suria!

I mean they are, but as everyone's saying they are mass produced, available in abundance everywhere in the world, and are priced at a level where anyone can get something if they really want (e.g. every woman in her 20s and 30s that I know on Facebook buying something from Tiffanys when it opened).

Perth, and most smaller cities around the world, don't do high end. Real high end and designer makes Prada and Gucci look like WA Salvage.

What would be the most high end over priced store?

I was shocked at how many designer stores Bali had, there were three Paul Smith stores in the spot I was staying in!

Those random brands that only have like one or two stores in the world.

Hermes is one of the most expensive high end brands, though I've read that unlike many others its products are generally handmade. As far as Prada goes (and I could care less as I can't afford such brands), it is everywhere. I live in a city practically no one has heard of (Busan, Korea) and there are FIVE Prada stores. Koreans love their luxury goods!

Prada is huge in Korea, they have invested a lot. Its probably their second home after Italy.

I'd be interested to hear some names.

Fashion is like art - best marketing campaign wins.

I heard a storey today about a guy who worked at kambrook. They had a whole bunch of a style of kettle they couldn't sell. So what did they do? Jacked up the price and sales went through the roof. Percieved value.

Those designer boutiques might be very expensive but they more than likely have a similer manufacturing cost.

id be careful if i were you, mincy will be in shortly to tell you about how individualistic prada bags with kmart-esque leopard print is when worn by a gaysian male

With an absurdly bad haircut.

I think I heard a similar story - not sure if it was Kambrook. It went something like...

A company couldn't sell a particular product, so they put out a 2nd product only slightly more upmarket and more expensive than the one they couldn't sell. The sales of the original product went through the roof because it was now considered to be "value". Not sure if it is an urban myth though - but sounds similar to your version.

At Hermes in Hong Kong, I saw a bag so expensive my brain wouldn't accept the currency conversion. It was about 60 thousand dollars, and wasn't the most expensive one on display.

re: marketing - I appreciate LV - they have NEVER had a sale, unlike every other luxury brand (including Prada).

Watches by Patek Phillipe I have seen for 100k plus (think that was in Singapore).

Like Korea, the Japanese love luxury goods - Japan is the worlds largest market for many (most?) luxury brands - they consume over 40% of the world's luxury goods. Although, I have read the Japanese are coming to their senses, and buying up brands like Zara as opposed to Prada these days (causing big problems for the brands who have invested heavily in Japan)

Ostentatious wealth is really not cool anymore, which is why Perth, with it's bogan culture, is starting to see these luxury brands pop up. We eat that shit hook line and sinker.

This. When I went to St Etienne in France, it was tiny as hell, population of 180,000 with very much a village feel, they had more luxury brands than Perth, and this is with Lyon (France's second largest city) being only an hour away by train.

As anyone who has been to Europe or Asia knows, practically every shopping mall has one of each of these brands. It's good that Perth is getting them, but it's just not a big deal.

as long as we don't get high end brands opening up in shopping centres/"malls" i'm happy... i don't want perth to be responsible for another burberry episode...

Ostentatious wealth will come back into vogue. It always does. People with money don't want to be seen to have money at a time like this (more so the last few years - and more so in other parts of the world).

I must have seen about a dozen Pradas, Hermes, LV's ect in Singapore. Every shopping centre on Orchard rd alone had them, even the older ones. Forget about grabbing a bargain though, everything is priced the same. Roughly 10-15% cheaper than in Perth.

Middle end shopping in Singapore is great. River Island, Topman and Zara offer good quality clothes at affordable prices with a range to match. Perth needs stores like these more than it needs luxuary brand stores.

There's no denying though that luxuary brand stores do enhance the city by adding to the streetscape as well as the prestige and image of the place.

I think Tiffany's is a perfect example of the stupidity of a lot of 'high end' shopping.

When I had the engagement ring made for my fiancee I went to a pretty high end Sydney jeweler and had a ring designed for the specific stone I chose. The whole thing ended up costing not much more than two thirds of what a similar ring would have cost at Tiffany's, where it would have been simply one of many identical rings bought by saps with more money than sense.

I agree. Went to Topshop/Topman in Soho, New York... Womens section looked great, mens section... very disappointing.
