The problem is that so many of these venues are limited by their licences. Case in point are many of the small bars that have to close at midnight. So you either go home.... or go to somewhere you don't really want to be, but want to stay out with your friends - and so end up funding the above beer barns!
When a lady from Liqour Licencing was questioned at the Perthour event about why the small bar licences only allow opening until midnight, she just said that is the way it is! BUT WHY!?!? :ohno:
Well even the big places like the Deen & Shed that close early cause a lot of shit in spilling drunk yobos onto the street not knowing where to go/what to do.
ryan79 February 17th, 2011, 04:10 AM fair enough , gotcha! on the bright side, Perth will be just like Melbourne in 15 years.
(melb circa 1986 that is)
 Nah I think Perth is doing well and it is an exciting time to be here - its just happening all to slowly.
I've learnt to focus on the thing I love about Perth otherwise I'd go insane. Add travel to that and Perth doesn't look too bad. I haven't been able to go anywhere for a long time but thats about to change - new job plus $$$ :D
I think it goes through phases.
Sydney had the it period in the Olympics era, now its Melbourne. Brisbane will probaly be next (if they can fix the floods up) and then its our turn.
Perth will get there. 15 years is about right (although I will be thirty fucking eight by then).
I'll be fucking 46! Mind you there are plenty of 40 somethings out there enjoying the city and to be honest with all the nanny laws we have now its much better to be older (and supposedly more sophisticated) than young and wild.
NB was much more fun when I was younger as it was more free and there were more clubs. The city is getting more and more bars most of which are very cool to hang out in. And this will continue to increase over the next couple of years.
It would be nice to have everything done now but the fact I'll be 46 doesn't phase me too much. I am certain I'll still be out enjoying the city. The youth today can forget having a decent youth nightlife/clubbing culture. Its the best its going to get.
Well even the big places like the Deen & Shed that close early cause a lot of shit in spilling drunk yobos onto the street not knowing where to go/what to do.
Yes, and because of that the cops say all venues selling alcohol cause these issues. Punish the cunts who fuck harshly and leave the 99% of us to have our fun.
Nate Von Longneck II February 17th, 2011, 04:30 AM Spelling it out clearly:
If I was young, now, I would get the fuck out of Perth and don't look back. ..and don't head to Melbourne, head to a real city (just my opinion).
Perth's too expensive, it's full of dicks, and it's probably the biggest nanny-state in the Western world. There is nothing on the horizon (say the next five or ten years) that will make Perth in any way a significantly better city to live in than it is now.
Leave.
You don't need money to leave, you just need the will.
On that happy note, I would just add that I am having a lot of fun in my life in Perth, and anyone can have a good, fun life in Perth.
But, Perth is not a city for young people. Ironically, when there was less legislation/laws, more bars and pubs around, it was great.
It's not now.
(People seem to forget, or not realise, there were way more pubs around in Perth not so long ago. They have all been closed/demolished. The list of pubs that have disappeared is amazing)
NZer February 17th, 2011, 04:30 AM I am overseas at the moment, coming back to Perth in June.
Please shower me with tips for places to buy good produce and get nice meals for a reasonable price.
Sanj February 17th, 2011, 04:47 AM Nah I can't. I'm stuck in Perth now for family reasons. I've missed my chance.
yeah i feel you, i often wonder that myself. im also stuck here for a few years at the minimum with commitments but i have to keep reminding myself that it isnt all bad, another 9 years at the very max and ill be completely and utterly free
i do get a touch of the "what ifs" though, especially cos i never imagined myself working for my old man but have now been here 7 years

ask me closer to the time and ill be happy to give you some advice. what area will you be living in?
NZer February 17th, 2011, 04:55 AM Thanks. I appreciate it.
Not sure where I will rent a place yet, but initially I will be staying with relatives in Stirling.
I don't expect to find everything close to home, so I don't mind a bit of driving on shopping day to find what I need.

There was a spate of it a while ago, I remember that I just found the Shenton Park pub, then it closed down (to make way for retirement villiages). Then I just found the Swanbourne pub, then that closed down (to make way for retirement village). The Hurlingham! Steve's!

There are sooo many..
I would take an educated guess, and say at least thirty pubs/basr/hotels, over the last few decades, have been "removed" from the city, without being replaced on the same site with another pub/bar/hotel.
Actually, it's probably higher than that.

I've had a long string of things happen since I came back from London that have caused me to be stuck here.
Visa rules changed for UK, GFC scaring me off moving, losing my job, family issues.
Just not meant to be I guess.

I do agree that young people need to get out of Perth. However the problem is that it is a vicious cycle - as if the very people who will drive vibrancy in the city just leave, then vibrancy won't develop!
I particularly agree with the bold bit...Perth people need to go oveseas.... but as a foreigner myself who has been in Australia 3 1/2 years it is not necissarily the case for me. Getting my PR soon so need another year or so before I can get Citizenship (and then go off travelling the world again but with Dual Nationality and the intention to come back here eventually). Now where to spend that next year to two years.... Perth (where I have already spent 2 years and am getting increasingly frustrated) or Melbourne..... hmmmmmmmmmmmm
(I have previously lived all over the UK (Liverpool, London, Sheffield, Coventry, Birmingham, Manchester) and in Brussels.... and plan to live in Rio or Buenos Aires after leaving Australia before maybe back to Europe. I'm nearly 30 but don't feel old.... yet!)
Johnvb February 17th, 2011, 08:53 AM Pics from Claremont Quarter today. Thoughts
1. This second half really connects the new development and solidifies the vision.
2. Great development for the western suburbs, will be extremely successful over the next few years. There is now a HUGE range of high-end retail available
3. Quality and finish should have been more suiting for the claremont high street. The pre-fab concrete and white walls are unimaginative and cheap. Wood, tiling, stone and steel would have been more appropriate.
4. Residential component: scaled back to four floors from seven, should have been ten. Basically zero shadowing and it would open the area up for investment allowing a greater number of people to live there with increased critical mass.
5. Lack of streetscape, the internal mall is a real kick in the guts for active street life in the area. It feels like a westfield and detracts from 'feel' of the area.
Enjoy!!!

Matt B February 17th, 2011, 09:31 AM 3rd and 5th shot look terrible. That concrete is indeed average. hmm the urban designer who did claremont quarter, or was involved at least, is reviewing the Leedy Masterplan at the moment.
Nate Von Longneck II February 17th, 2011, 09:52 AM I'm a little out of touch on this one.
Is that a shopping mall? Or something designed by an urban planner to improve life in Claremont? Or both?
Very confused, it looks like Karrinyup to me.
GAbE27 February 17th, 2011, 09:55 AM it looks like a piece of out dated shit!!!
Nate Von Longneck II February 17th, 2011, 09:58 AM it looks like a piece of out dated shit!!!
hahaha looks fucked doesn't it!
Johnvb February 17th, 2011, 10:04 AM It is a new mall plus streetscape/corner. My major criticism is that it is not in keeping with the claremont 'feel', should be architecturally unique with high quality materials. Instead it has been done on the cheap by multiplex.
However it is functionally pretty good, incorporates 4 levels of resi above the whole development, has a laneway with after hours activation through 5 restaurants and small bars (yet to be opened) and is pretty close to the train line.
However the designs were done about 10 years ago (and it shows!!) looks out of place for the area, more suited to cockburn central ;)
Sanj February 17th, 2011, 10:08 AM yeah design looks shit, i didnt realise it was done 10 years ago. i do think it is a good addition to the area though

well sometimes it's nice to relax amongst ourselves after roughing it with you lot for a laugh
acc521 February 17th, 2011, 10:44 AM Ted Baker section in David Jones = win if it's men's stuff.
Agreed on the internal bit. When I was there, the fact that it's a mall and has resulted in lots of blank walls at street level is very disappointing.
Sanj February 17th, 2011, 10:47 AM im hoping now that the rest is open the street level is significantly better. might see if i can go this weekend, been wanting to check out my bros office
BartBart February 17th, 2011, 02:00 PM There was a spate of it a while ago, I remember that I just found the Shenton Park pub, then it closed down (to make way for retirement villiages). Nookenburra was closed as a live band venue due to retirement village neighbouring. There seems to be a theme...
Kelli February 17th, 2011, 04:03 PM ^That's gone now too hasn't it, the Nookenburra? I loved that pub, so relaxed and so many characters in there. There is The Banksia there or whatever it is called now?
acc521 February 17th, 2011, 04:16 PM The Banksia is shite due to the ''I think I'm awesome'' crowd and shitty bouncers. Bottle shop there has some good beers that are hard to find elsewhere in Perth though.
Kelli February 17th, 2011, 04:19 PM ^Yes, I went there once for lunch, the atmosphere really wasn't very nice at all.
I vaguely remember appreciating that it was an interesting building for a new pub though, good quality building materials used, I think it was the same people who built The Gate in Success.
Nate Von Longneck II February 17th, 2011, 04:45 PM Spending my life so far in the inner city North of Perth:
Norwood Hotel (Perth/Highgate)
Knutsford Hotel (cool 50's architecture - North Perth)
Both had great live music.
Where Coles is now in Northbridge used to be a pub. Also had a few nights there.
Maylands hotel on Guildford road, where Raine Square is now, underneath Cinecentre (cnr Barrack and Murray), Ozone Bar, Redheads Bar (where the NB Piazza is)
Plenty of others!
Not to mention nightclubs - I'm a bit beyond it now, but so many nighclubs have been closed down or demolished, permanently.
As Perth has grown, it's entertainment options have shrunk.
Dilaz89 February 17th, 2011, 04:53 PM ^ which has been a recipe for disaster.
Explosion of population and wealth yet fewer nightclubs than 10-20 years ago.
Kelli February 17th, 2011, 04:54 PM That's right, that place underneath Cinecentre! Cinecellar or something like that, what happened to that place I wonder?
The Bluenote!
Dilaz89 February 17th, 2011, 05:14 PM Went to the Sentinel tonight. Really good experience that I'd recommend to anyone here who digs simple, elegant dishes. Excellent service and ambiance to boot!
5 years ago dining on St. Georges tce would have been unheard of. Can't wait for the new restaurants/bars at 150, C2 and old Pallas Hotel.
jonwil February 18th, 2011, 01:22 AM As Perth has grown, it's entertainment options have shrunk.
I wonder why no-one has given thought to building more cinemas in the CBD to replace Cinecentre and Cinema City.
Or would the CBD never be able to compete with the suburban multiplexes?
Personally I think an 8 screen multiplex on the second level of some development in the heart of the CBD would be great (and would probably encourage me to go to the movies more often)
BartBart February 18th, 2011, 01:32 AM ^That's gone now too hasn't it, the Nookenburra? I loved that pub, so relaxed and so many characters in there. There is The Banksia there or whatever it is called now?
The Nookenburra as it was - a live pub venue. Its death sentence was signed pretty much when they built a retirement village right next door. They knocked down the whole thing a couple of years ago and it is now commercial with Botanica there now.
samboy February 18th, 2011, 01:46 AM Does anyone know of a travel website where you can book/lookup around the world trips with more than 10 stopovers? I've had a look at a few and I can't seem to find anything with more than a few stopovers.

I'd say an around the world ticket would be better value if you want that many stopovers.
samboy February 18th, 2011, 02:13 AM That's what I want acc but I can't find a website where I can enter multiple destinations (more than 5) and see some around the world ticket options with different partners etc.
Sanj February 18th, 2011, 02:21 AM for this sort of thing it might even be worth going into a travel agency but i must admit im no expert in this area. ive got a friend who has used au revoir travel in mt lawley for years (her folks travel at least 4 months in the year i reckon and have for years), might be worth trying them out
the only other agency ive actually used is globetrotter but i believe they specialise in travel for companies. service is fantastic and we only stopped using them cos we book most of our flights out of singapore now and save at least 30%

Samboy - I found the most unbelievable sites, a few weeks ago.
You could pick any city on earth (pretty much) as part of a "round-the-world" ticket - it woudl then tell you the price, distance travelled etc.
I spent an hour on it in dreamland.
I didn't bookmark it - but it was Star Alliance, and the other frequent flyer mob. (One World?) Search - you will find it!
acc521 February 18th, 2011, 02:25 AM Qantas have it too. I think it uses the One World alliance partners if you use their site.
Nate Von Longneck II February 18th, 2011, 02:31 AM Hey acc - you still up? haha - looking into doing a "repositioning cruise". Trying to get around the world without planes.
Searching with the GF last night - you can do a one-way cruise from Spain to Panama for $600 all inclusive, 14 days journey, stopping at Azores and Caribbean on the way. (or spain to miami etc etc)
Seems that twice a year, all the cruise ships move from Europe to Caribbean, and nobody wants to do the one way cruise, so they sell them really cheap.

Makes a big difference to price where you start - eg starting in Jakarta was much cheaper than starting in Perth.

yeah many industries have that, eg we pay a prettylow rate for our 20' FCLs from Singapore to Japan cos most of the volume comes the other way and they want to fill up the space (called backloading)

Can I call you Zamir from now on?

Oh shit just realised the time. Time to catch some zzzz!
samboy February 18th, 2011, 02:55 AM I had some mates over from interstate and decided to take them to Tiger2 for brekky. Now I remember why I hadn't been there for ages. One of them asked for a slight change to a menu item (as she had a baby) and was greeted with a snide comment (actually several). The staff were almost scared to be courteous at the risk of upsetting the owner (who wasn't there). It's a weird atmosphere. Almost as if they've been coached to do the exact opposite of what basic customer service is all about. The people I was with said it felt like some hicksville twilight zone. Also what they claim to be 'sourdough' is no better than thick tip top bread. Their coffee is pretty ok as always but I have vowed never to set foot in that place again.
Sanj February 18th, 2011, 02:59 AM the owner, that fat stuck up bitch, started out nice but somehow lost the plot along the way. i hope she shuts down and leaves the industry
agree re the bad attitude seemingly being demanded by the owner as ive seen it myself from staff to others in front of me.
incidentally have only had one slightly bad experience there but dont go there out of sheer disgust at how some other ppl have been treated. i was having a glass of wien there with a friend once and this older couple (in 50s) who had been shopping popped in for a glass of wine and were spoken to like they were ppl who had obviously wandered into the wrong place
samboy February 18th, 2011, 03:02 AM what makes me even more pissed off is that (seemingly) the business is very successful. Are we that starved for choice??
Sanj February 18th, 2011, 03:05 AM too many dumb c**ts, more dollars than sense etc
we are especially starved for places that arent cooker cutter equivalents so every slightly "alternative" cock would rather be served badly at tiger tiger than go to somewhere boring
we also never, ever complain and when ppl do it tends to be done in a bad way so ppl like this dumb bitch get away with it. i do think that things are changing though. a lot of the places opened recently are significantly better and have genuine warmth i/o attitude
ryan79 February 18th, 2011, 03:35 AM I gave up even getting coffee at that place, even if it is good (Greenhouse is better anyway).
I walked in once, full of stuck up grungy hippies (you know, the Nate type. I've got lots of money but I'm still a super cool hipster with a shit woolen beanie knitted by grandma). Anyway, as I was waiting for my take away coffee I was just getting frowned at by all the staff walking past and two bitches behind the counter kept whispering to each other.
Most uncomfortable feeling I've had a in a while. Its like being back in High School and wander into the wrong area. Actually I lie. I like being in that situation. To know people dissapprove of my presence is satisfying. I just don't want to give them any of my money.
ps - j/j Nate
Matt B February 18th, 2011, 03:47 AM I love Tiger Tiger. LOVE!
my brother once asked for his coffee with condensed milk... got told no... said he could see a can of opened condensed milk in the fridge, pointed it out to the staff, they said no.
I think sometimes customers need to be told no, it is a breath of fresh air. Don't like it, leave.
samboy February 18th, 2011, 03:48 AM haha
Sanj February 18th, 2011, 03:52 AM they should bulldoze it [/buckels]
Sanj February 18th, 2011, 03:59 AM 2 new places for ppl to try out
1) nubia cafe, inglewood - african place, tiny menu, can be slow service but something about it makes me happy. really warm ppl, the chicken and rice is fantastic. HIGHLY recommend trying the somali tea which is similar to proper chai. have had 2 meals and 4 teas since discovering it recently
2) thai esarn, bayswater - only been once but think it has huge potential. some dishes i havent tried before, we had 3 dishes, 2 excellent one average. worth trying imo
Kelli February 18th, 2011, 04:14 AM Where is that one in Bayswater Sanj? What were the dishes you had?
Nate Von Longneck II February 18th, 2011, 04:22 AM Hey! I had that Thai in Bayswater on Wednesday night (a friend just bought a house in Baysy).
We had - Tom Yum, Pad Thai, and a "prawn salad" and some rice (all his choices).
All quite nice, no complaints at all. Not sure of the price, he paid for it all. Not much spice going on, but that could be easily fixed. If it was a local joint, I would go back regulalry - I'm sure they could adjust the spice level my tastes..
Prawns in the salad were great, mussels in the Tom Yum were huge, and delicious.
RE: Tiger Tiger
My GF took her friend from Melbourne there, not so long ago. They came home laughing about how rude/bad the service was. They wouldn't sell "soda water" seperately. They were willing to sell a alcoholic drink *with* soda water, but nut sell the soda water separately, for my GF's friend.
My GF's friend was pregnant at the time. Great service, A+ recommended.
Sanj February 18th, 2011, 04:28 AM they asked us how hot we wanted it so im sure u could ask for hot/extra hot. im really keen to try one of their esarn specials which is a deep fried marinated rice with crispy pork
kelli - had:
whitey money bags (my mates choice) - meh
crispy fish salad - really nice, fish couldve been crispier but well balanced and very refreshing
some stir fried chicken dish that was recommended, i think it had red curry-ish flavours. very nice, only complaint was they used chicken breast
eggplant dish - average
sticky rice with mango - nice
all up $64 which i thought was reasonable. money bags and sticky rice probably the most expensive relative to what you get ($7)

It took me a couple of years to find the Tiger Tiger boss again after she left Cafe 130. Honestly I love the attitude! You guys would be complaining about that Soup Nazi guy given the chance.
I'm trying to get the wife to open a cafe... we may have "Rude Tuesdays" just for fun.

Graham is the bloke behind the Ellington and has some serious Jazz cred, for those (like me) who tend to think free council events often have naff bands.

Went to Leonidas today and they have closed. Closed a month ago. No plan to open anywhere else. I am so devastated. My fave chocolate place in the world and we were lucky to have one in Perth.
I can't believe it. Don't what to do now.
Sanj February 18th, 2011, 08:41 AM ive never been there, shame
just a bad location unfortunately
Sanj February 18th, 2011, 08:42 AM ryan - ive had some really nice airflown truffles at barker and hale in cottesloe, ws a couple of years ago now but i remember being quite impressed.
i also read about some chocolatier who has started selling some stuff out of her home to the general public, will see if i can dig up her info for u
jonwil February 18th, 2011, 09:16 AM What are Caffissimo and Coffee Club and etc doing that's making them so successful? Is their coffee actually good enough to compete with the small guys or is it just the fact that the big chains have all the prime locations and the lowest prices?
Caffissimo alone have at least 1/2 dozen locations in the CBD (one near QV1, one near central park, BankWest tower, Quadrant, Wesfarmers, Australia Place, Central Law Courts, International House, Stirling Street, Art Gallery) and Coffee Club is fast catching up (Coffee Club just opened one in the former NAB bank building next to St Martins Tower)
Sanj February 18th, 2011, 09:19 AM generally people know what they are getting and there is some sort of consistency. for most people who arent fussy this is enough. it is also quite recognisable - eg meet me at coffee club outside the new building on william st

Thanks sanj. But this place has a sentimental value for me (the one Brussels but Perth continued it. Couldn't believe Perth was lucky enough to have one). Just so sad that such a great unique place is closing. The guy was brilliant and friendly and very knowledgable about his chocolate. He'd also give me one for free most times.
The place had been going strong for 11 years and would get crazy busy around Xmas. Not sure why he shut down but the two stores either side of him were also closed and gutted. Something must be happening there.
Maybe Kokos will replace them for me. I'm genuinely very sad :(

I think its a combination of location and name. They plaster their name everywhere so you can't miss them as opposed to the good small place who only have a sign or two and located in a not so visible space.
Caffisimo in the AMP tower go closed down and an independant with decent coffee opened. Can't remember its name.
Sanj February 18th, 2011, 09:38 AM bad location ryan. plenty of passionate people who are good at their craft but shit businessmen. he could possibly have been one.

If you eat the cookie and think it's special, then I think we should make a wager on how long before it turns up there :).
Have you ever had a conversation with the big Austrian man in the antique store in that row of shops? If not, I dare you! He's barely ever in his shop actually, he's out tormenting the other shop owners. God, what a character!

Nate Von Longneck II February 20th, 2011, 08:34 AM Mak's Chinatown last night - Pork Belly with Yam have you had it? gooood.
We had the Szechuan Fish (again) gets better each time. Fried Beans, the best I've had, pickled cucumber (great), a tiger prawn hot pot sort of dish, a chicken hot pot, the chilli potato garlicy salad (love it).. we ordered a lot of food for just four people, total price $115. Can't argue with that!
Mak's is now officially my favourite Chinese restaurant in Perth. Four or five visits, zero complaints.
Also bumped into Dilaz and friend in Chinatown, they were both looking very smart indeed.
Sanj February 20th, 2011, 08:49 AM i had a good 10 minute chat with one of the girls from mak's the other night, she pointed out a few of her favourites. im inclined to go in one day and let her order the food, should be interestiung.
those fried beans are stupidly good,so is the szechuan fish hot pot, which i assumed is the dish youre talking about
i have had some meh dishes there but have definitely had some great ones. she reckons they might be increasing the price of their pigs trotter soon as the chef has been complaining about it being too cheap relative to the work and quantity of food. let me know next time you plan on going there, ill be keen to come along

Its developers say it will be a world first but officials claim a boutique bar planned for North Perth is inappropriate and too close to houses.
Founders of Cocktail Gastronomy – a catering firm that matches drinks with gourmet food – have applied to open a bar near the busy intersection of Angove and Charles streets.
Last month, chef Daniel Sterpini (pictured left with bartender partner Adam Keane) revealed the bar would offer a unique food and cocktail service on a scale never before seen in the world.
Mr Sterpini said the bar would encourage the extension of Angove Street’s cafe strip from its current Fitzgerald Street end all the way down to Charles Street.
However, Town of Vincent planners claim the proposal runs counter to the ‘orderly and proper planning’ of the immediate area.
The immediate area itself is not so flash – containing an old-school adult book shop, drive-thru McDonald’s, used car yard and BP service station.
Mr Sterpini’s plans were advertised to neighbours and not one objection was lodged.
The council did receive a single submission of support that nevertheless warned that a parking shortfall might see the bar’s patrons parking at the McDonald’s or BP.
Vincent’s planners latched upon this, estimating the bar would fall 18 car parks short of the their requirements.
They have recommended the boutique bar be rejected when the town’s councillors next meet tomorrow night.

It got withdrawn/deferred at the applicant's request prior to the meeting.
The issue as presented by staff is that there is no parking, and the council carpark nearby it surrounded by residential quite a bit...
... my opinion will wait until it comes back to council.
acc521 February 22nd, 2011, 05:14 PM Here's an idea. Not every inner city venue needs to have a bucketload of parking specifically for the premises!
Matt B February 22nd, 2011, 05:51 PM Here's an idea. Not every inner city venue needs to have a bucketload of parking specifically for the premises!
As I say it was withdrawn. However the corner of Charles and Scarb Bch Rd is hardly inner city:) It is hardly a public transport mecca for small bar types, and the local resi density not exactly through the roof.
acc521 February 22nd, 2011, 05:58 PM I'd consider it at the edge of ''inner city''. It's certainly appropriate for the length of Angove street to be developed into a trendy little street with some activity I would say.
Matt B February 23rd, 2011, 12:23 AM I'd consider it at the edge of ''inner city''. It's certainly appropriate for the length of Angove street to be developed into a trendy little street with some activity I would say.
Generally he admin recommendation is based on policy, and it is up to the council to determine to follow or go against the recommendation, and it didn't get that far. I'd assume they are tweaking it a bit.
ryan79 February 23rd, 2011, 12:51 AM Is there seriously a conspiracy to keep Perth as boring as possible?
Do all shops on Angove st have their own car parks?
Come on, this shit is bullshit. Just approve it and let people live a little.
samboy February 23rd, 2011, 01:24 AM I try not to read (or think) about this stuff as it gets my blood boiling. It just reinforces my belief that dumb f$&k councils only serve one purpose - Self preservation.
acc521 February 23rd, 2011, 01:28 AM We shall wait and see :)
Kelli February 23rd, 2011, 02:30 AM I think its natural for councils to be concerned about parking, it's them that has to deal with the barrage of calls from irritated residents.
The City of Bayswater have been letting parking space requirements slide a bit for the Eighth Ave area, but the justification is that the train is there and many people will arrive that way rather than drive.
Cars are the problem really.
eugenius February 23rd, 2011, 03:00 AM just put some bicycle racks outside. You know all the trendy hipster types that go to small bars ride bikes these days. Cars were soooooooo 20th Century!
Nate Von Longneck II February 23rd, 2011, 03:08 AM "plans were advertised to neighbours and not one objection was lodged."
I lived on Waugh St, about 50 meters from there.
Every single spot for street parking is taken in that area, so you could add 5 bars to that location and it would make no difference.
There was/is? a strip club practically across the road. It had a night club license.
The Rosemount, up the road, has it's car park backing on to residential, and yet, had it's numbers recently INCREASED to over a thousand patrons!
Parking is a bigger issue there.
Another ridiculous decision coming up!
Nate Von Longneck II February 23rd, 2011, 03:09 AM I try not to read (or think) about this stuff as it gets my blood boiling. It just reinforces my belief that dumb f$&k councils only serve one purpose - Self preservation.
100% accurate.
..and the best way, in Perth, to self preservation :
Keep things the way they are. No change allowed.

Kelli February 23rd, 2011, 03:54 AM It's quite a difficult thing to cook at home well though, tofu, usually needs either deep frying or a really tasty sauce. nope, that is four seasons, on the corner. this is the very last one just before you exit onto forbes rd.

walsons used to have a pretty good range of tofu to buy if you like cooking it at home. i believe most of the range is made by them but i could be wrong. it is also in that centre but fronts william st (directly opposite city fresh)

Bingo! It's the last one at the south end of the restaurants at the back end, if that makes sense. It looks very unlikely, but I loved the hostess there as well, she unashamedly gave me lessons on etiquette while I was eating. The beef hot pot was really good as well. Not sure about authenticity, I judge meals more about whether they are flavour balanced or not.

Dilaz89 February 23rd, 2011, 05:12 AM Bars breathe new life into Perth lanes
MARISSA LAGUE, The West Australian February 23, 2011, 6:56 am
http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/wa/8889943/bars-breathe-new-life-into-perth-lanes/
The small bar trend in Perth is giving laneways and basements a new lease of life and delivering new rental opportunities for property owners with laneway rents ranging from $300 to $600 per square metre and basement CBD restaurant space on the ground floor of an office tower being priced up to $1000/sqm.
Changes to liquor licences in 2007 paved the way for about 30 small bars to open in and around Perth, according to Jones Lang LaSalle, and while the small bar scene is still in its infancy compared with Melbourne and Sydney, the arrival of more intimate settings has been well received by patrons.
"Small bars like 1907, Wolf Lane or Helvetica in the CBD have been highly desirable to workers, especially on Friday nights. It makes sense that more of these would slowly develop, especially with the benefits they provide," said Jones Lang LaSalle's investment sales manager Phil Fogliani.
"Property owners can add value to their property by using the previously underutilised space more effectively and the conversion of basements and storage areas into bars provides another destination for people to enjoy a drink," he said.
Mr Fogliani said basement storage areas in CBD buildings would attract around $50/sqm for rent as general storage space but when converted into a bar, could return around $300-$400/sqm.
Benefits also extend to the suburbs where small bars are rejuvenating strips of shops.
Examples include The Cabin in Mount Hawthorn, The Stanley in Wembley and The Suite in Shenton Park and Jones Lang LaSalle's head of retail leasing for WA, Nick McAuliffe, said that as Perth matures, demand for small bars would also increase from other retail tenants. "The small bar phenomenon complements the social shift towards a push for local," Mr McAuliffe said. "We are experiencing strong inquiries from potential small bar owners looking for the right opportunity."
Colliers International associate director of retail leasing Peter Millard said the small bar scene had been slow to get off the ground with complaints of excessive red tape and a complicated process.
Colliers International has also been working with the City of Perth's Laneway Activation Committee.
"We are currently working with building owners on two separate sites in the CBD, one at the eastern end of the city and one in the heart of the CBD, to formulate opportunities to activate laneways in those sites," Mr Millard said.
"Another great example can be found at one40 william where the Melbourne-based developer Cbus, worked closely with architects when submitting on the development to incorporate a laneway activation in the project, which has now taken shape."
The laneway - Globe Lane -links one40william and Forrest Place.

haha yeah, I mentioned the strip club..
So, Maccas, brothels, strip clubs, drug growing supplies, all fine.
Bar, where you DRINK ALCOHOL - needs car parking.
Poor Matt.
samboy February 23rd, 2011, 07:05 AM Apparently the guy who owns the "Fez" in Mt Lawley is opening another one in Leederville. My guess would be @ the old C2Go or Stuzzico premises. Although the one in MT Lawley is not open for dinner so probably not that exciting.

It didn't come to council, they withdrew the application, it's out of my hands!
Someone asked earlier if say everything else on Angove is expected to provide parking... the answer is yes. Just like any development there is a parking requirement based on size and type of use. They then get concessions based on proximity to PT, proximity to a public carpark etc, then a shortfall can be determined to be too big = refusal, or manageable therefore they pay a cash in lieu (an incentive to provide parking if they can but reality is that the CIL amount is miniscule compared to the cost of actually providing a parking space).
The strip club is an established use, and was a nightclub for years before that well before the CoV existed.
Lets just wait and see what happens.

Can you clarify this?

Matt B February 23rd, 2011, 07:29 AM Does every type of development need to account for parking?
Can you clarify this?
Yes EVERY type of development needs to account for parking.
Some examples form last night:
Hobart St Deli - alterations and addidtions.
Required 14 bays
0.646 multiplier for bus stop, mixed use, nearby public carpark = 9.044 bays
minus provided on site - NIL
minus previously approved shortfall = 7.5 bays
resultant shortfall = 1.47 bays
Result and staff recommendation- APPROVED
West End Deli -change of use cafe to eating house
Required 12.21 bays
0.85 adjustment for bus stop = 10.379 bays
minus provided on site = 5
Resultant shortfall = 5.379 bays
Result and staff recommendation- APPROVED
see we are not complete idiots.
The Small Bar (withdrawn)
Requirement = 22.22 bays (based on 1 bay per 4.5ish capacity of 100 people)
adjustments (car park and bus stop) 0.8075 = 17.9 bays
minus provided = NIL
Resultant Shortfall = 17.9
Staff rec: refusal.
Based on the local car park (24 bays) being at the rear and quite secluded and there being no rear access to the bar.
we also have a policy "Where the requirement is 11-40 bays, a minimum of 15% of the bays is to be provided." which is also not complied with.
Matt B February 23rd, 2011, 07:31 AM Glad you like that Sanj;) I'm upset I've not got you guys discussing the issue. We've made a decision and I'm not really allowed to criticise a decision in a public forum. $60k cost estimate to change to the CoV. My quotable quote is "Vanity over substance!" 5-3 in favour.
Matt B February 23rd, 2011, 07:33 AM If someone can convince me that 100 people are likely to rock up to that bar and require no parking bays I'm all ears:) Not giving my personal opinion, just sticking up for the staff. In general they play the policy book and council has discretion to accept or ignore. Their job is really to tell us what our policies say. If we regularly go against policy then the next step is to bring policy up to date.
Sanj February 23rd, 2011, 07:35 AM what is the difference between cafe and eating house?

that actually does make sense (and damn you for being right in this regard). i guess the frustration comes from a lot of people, myself included, thinking that the bolded part is where the whole thing falls apart. as samby said councils are fucking useless and at least appear to be more interested in self preservation. i know you must partly agree because you surely wouldnt have nominated twice if you didnt think you could improve the shitstorm that is the town of vincent
remember when gogo got refused permission to open a bar by council because of a lack of parking on fucking beaufort st?? seriously, beaufort st. incidentally 5ive managed to get approved by council so id love to know how they got around the parking issue

I don't know that Gogo one, but we knocked one back on the corner of Richmond and Oxford in Leederville (heritage eyes on oxford building) then approved Kitsch only a matter of months later (again b4 my time). The latter got Re-Store to say they could use their parking, the former not so lucky.
One thing about the discretion of Council... unfortunately when the officer rec is refusal then they list a range of other things and it can sound like it is the devil incarnate... when really it is just a parking shortfall.
All I can say is we approve a lot more than we knock back. Both those Hobart Deli and West End Deli ones had locals at council complaining about lack of parking for example and we don't fall to pieces. I think the shitstorm is more perception than reality to be honest.
Matt B February 23rd, 2011, 07:50 AM what is the difference between cafe and eating house?
good question. Maybe the ability to serve wine/byo? I honestly have no idea!!! whoops.
Nate Von Longneck II February 23rd, 2011, 07:51 AM Would you be likely to approve a small bar in the vicinity of William/Brisbane, if no parking was provided on premises?
Matt B February 23rd, 2011, 07:58 AM Would you be likely to approve a small bar in the vicinity of William/Brisbane, if no parking was provided on premises?
No idea - would all depend on size etc... the admin run all the planning rules over it to figure that out. But the Brisbane St Carpark is notoriously under utilised and is in close proximity. They'll run the calcs as per usual and then make a call on whether there is enough parking nearby to cover the shortfall.
crave February 23rd, 2011, 09:14 AM why would you want parking as a main hurdle/criteria if an application was for a small bar... if that bar was granted a liquor licence... i would imagine most people should probably be taking other means of transport that doesn't involve driving...
given for tha potential to have an entertainment "spine" from mt lawley to cbd and tha fact that it has good public transport... isn't that a good platform for council to encourage people to take public transport? what about a bus shuttle? nb/highgate/mt lawley/north perth/leederville? tha council could then look at changing planning schemes of precincts (ethnics, wine sippin wankers, indi cvntz) where people can do a couple of spots and travel with ease..

I have heard a story that ToV have been including the cash in-lieu into their operating budget and not setting it aside in a trust like they are supposed to be doing... and were caught out when a developer pulled out of a development and ToV couldnt refund them... Shhh you didnt hear that from me!!
Its ok gosnells done the same to BGC, we paid the 50K in a cross over bond and gosnells couldnt pay us back and had to make installments!! haha

Officials slam ‘world first’ cocktail bar

CHRIS THOMSON

There has been some effort to see maximum parking provision set rather than just minimum, to encourage low car developments. The question is whether developers will go for it.
As an example we cop some flack for knocking back the "St Marks" development on Beaufort St. Ok it is density and inner city, but other places in the world provide that without having to excavate the whole site to put in two levels of basement parking! I tend to think, thinking aloud, that zoning should not matter, but you should set a maximum parking provision for the site, and if people want to up the zoning they have to do it without providing more parking. I think it is the only way forward to be honest to tackle the car issue.
eugenius February 23rd, 2011, 03:11 PM Think I agree with some of this. It is ridiculous in the inner city that all apartment blocks have to provide parking for all apartments. I doubt that would be the case almost anywhere else in the world!
Also I think small bars should be discouraged from having parking. Alcohol and driving do not mix. You want to be encouraging people to walk / take PT, and for small bars to become neighbourhood bars for locals to frequent, rather than travelling further (and this being more likely to drink drive) to a larger establishment.

Didn't you read my post that we approved two places last night (ok not bars) even though they didn't meet the requirements. And Council was totally at liberty to approve the bar had it not been withdrawn.
I mean it is totally my point, we are looking at moving away from minimum parking requirements where practical/feasible.
Reality is people need to get to places. We determine the # cars, then apply a heap of reductions that basically means if you are in a town centre with great PT and plenty of public parking (or out of a town centre and we can see that your parking will not dominate all the spaces available) you'll get away with it.
The reality is also that when a new application comes along in a centre like Mt lawley or Angove St then more often than not it is the neighbouring business that complains there is not enough parking. So as an example Milk'd may complain when Pantry Door wants to open... it is a dog eat dog world out there.
ryan79 February 24th, 2011, 12:37 AM Well this bar better not get rejected for some bs reason when it comes through. Thats all I'm going to say.

In a situation like that, who would you accept an objection from? The land owner, the business owner or both?
most cases it would be easy to provide a justification against such an objection.

After talking about that salt and chilli bean curd they have there, I got the overwhelming urge last night to get some on the way home. Nice, delicious.
I thought I'd try something new off the menu as well though, so I got a hot and sour soup. Foul, hideous!
Just a warning, in case people go there on my recommendation, it requires discretion!
crave February 24th, 2011, 02:11 PM did they put the cheese on upside down... I fvckn hate it when they do that!!!
lol... well, there's something about sliced cheese in those individual plastic wraps that just seems like there's some sort of plastic compound being chewed in your mouth... tha salami was about 2' thick, thinly sliced in a single layer, then tha cheese... at least tha roll was fresh...
it's this little cafe up in swan view, tha only "decent" one without making a trek... anyway, it's a pastry/bakery and they have a cafe... they still have tha most horrible coffee, so hot...
i'm usually a fan of griffith's coffee beans but they burn tha fvck out of it and tha milk is so hot... it's still warm almost 3 hours later... i hope griffith's coffee pays them a visit soon and gives them some much needed training... :p
anyway, tha point of this is that, they make a killing being tha only place up here and tha cafe is soooo crap... and i really resent that... :p

Or you could go to Linclons which was started by a former employee of Tarts!
Lincoln < Tarts
cnr Lincoln and Stirling St, Highgate
samboy February 25th, 2011, 02:06 AM Based on some good reviews I went to Lincoln's couple of months ago on a Saturday. The staff were very cold and uninterested. They also told me they don't do cooked breakfasts (only premade stuff). Walked back out.

?? I always get cooked breakfasts when I go there! And it is usually excellent quality (although Perth prices).
Other than that and Tarts, there is the eco/greeny cafe diagonally opposite the Brisbane, the Dissy Witch opposite the Northbrige Hotel, and Toast at Claisebrook Cove. All too much $$ for what they are though, but that's Perth.

Just an FYI for those of you who like cooked breakfasts, there is a small restaurant/cafe called Verge Cucina within the Burswood Peninsular project which serves good coffee and tasty breakfasts.

crave February 25th, 2011, 08:42 AM swung by maylands to see tha new shops that opened up across tha traino, interesting spots, tho it's so hot... council should consider trees there... there's a cool chinese furniture place mainly reproductions, i think tha owner was gay was over two houses, front and back thru a courtyard, double storey also... will have a new cafe opening there too... which will be good...
went to hit up milk'd and omg... 12.90 for a ham cheese tomota foccacia... rolled my eyes and i walked out of there... i'm very certain tha patrons at tha front heard "$12.90 for a focaccia are they fvckn kidding me?" lol. ended up across tha road, forget tha name but it's next to tha gun shop, looked to be run by lesbians which was far better... great sandwich... and a bit more respectable $12 for sandwich and drink...

Welcome to Perth. Where the market kicks you in the teeth every time you crawl back to it.
samboy February 25th, 2011, 02:19 PM Hey Crave, just out of curiosity apart from family is there anything else in Perth that you have experienced/seen so far that has made you glad to be here. Not being sarcastic I'm genuinely interested.
crave February 25th, 2011, 05:20 PM that's a tough one samboy, my first answer would be no... only been back 2 weeks and been out only a couple of times tho but none of tha superfluous stuff has given tha wow factor... will have to revisit tha question in sometime when i've actually settled back in and gotten my head around to "perth" time...
i'd probably enjoyed tha welcome home a bit more if this fvckn weather wasn't so hot... this isn't a perth thing tho, i hate any hot weather, anywhere...
but anyway, i've come with a different set of motivation for being back here and tha challenge is ahead of me... i will say though i'll do my best to make a difference around tha place... :)

We can trade restaurant tips etc
re: perth weather - it is hot as shit at the moment Crave, it's doing most peoples heads in.
Also FOOD:
I had the Cheeseburger Sushi at Iku outside of 140 William (on William St) yesterday.... its really really good! It could finally bridge the gap between Jap and Whitey food, and make us all live in harmony! That good!
Not at all what I was expecting, cost was $7.50, cold bottle water $1, so for $8.50 it's a great little lunch. I will be back for sure!

crave February 26th, 2011, 06:13 AM their carbon footprint is out of control!!! :p
ryan79 February 26th, 2011, 06:13 AM Cheeseburger sushi sounds insane. I must try this.

Oh, I thought it was like the one here.
A traveling restaurant, interesting
Sanj February 26th, 2011, 06:21 AM more like a pop up restaurant than a travelling one, i assume each one will look different etc, merely have a similar theme
Sanj February 26th, 2011, 06:23 AM damn i just looked it up and im disappointed, was expecting it to be like this http://www.sushiburger.com.au/Hamburg-SB-02-kirinuki500dpi-RGB1.jpg www.sushiburger.com.au
but from what ivef found it isnt. still keen to try though
samboy February 27th, 2011, 05:12 AM The VENN galery/shop/cafe is looking REALLY nice. Looking forward to grabbing brekky or a couple of drinks there. I hope they stay true to their word of a 'relaxed atmosphere' and it doesn't turn into some wanky 'dress code' establishment. And yes it's another Tapas joint.
steve_87 February 28th, 2011, 09:02 AM Hey guys, my wife is trying to organise a hens party for her friend even though she despises them. In her words, "what are some good cocktail bars for a chilled hens day (not skanky)?" Any suggestions would be much appreciated!!
Sanj February 28th, 2011, 09:43 AM do u have a rough idea of group size? do they want some sort of private area type stuff or just a nice place in general to go to?
acc521 February 28th, 2011, 11:53 AM I still like 1907.
jonwil March 1st, 2011, 02:27 AM Can anyone suggest a place in Perth that does GOOD steak?
Sanj March 1st, 2011, 02:42 AM Can anyone suggest a place in Perth that does GOOD steak?
rockpool, hippo creek, old brewery restaurant, zebras and fibber mcgees all have a fair few steaks on the menu and all dry age their own meat as far as i know (apart from maybe zebras)
everyone i know who has been to rockpool so far has been a little bit mixed on the overall experience but no one has complained about the steaks.

I hear Sentinel on the corner of William St & the Terrace is very decent. Or Tony Romas up near Woodside Building if you like the "american steakhouse" experience.
steve_87 March 1st, 2011, 03:03 AM Just 6 of them sank. Nothing private just nice in general. Cheers
jackso March 1st, 2011, 03:40 AM Had the cheeseburger sushi from Iku on William st yesterday. It's good! Not what I was expecting. I'll be returning, so hopefully this place stays around.

Wasn't what I was expecting either.

Sanj March 1st, 2011, 06:52 AM yeah im tempted to check it out but nervous im going to end up seeing stirfried noodles with honey lemon chicken and cauliflower
crave March 1st, 2011, 06:56 AM lol. fingers crossed :p
any of you seen tha billboard on tha art gallery? there's a "yam dreaming" picture on it but didn't read tha details... can't seem to find any info online...
NZer March 1st, 2011, 06:56 AM lol.
It sounds pretty cool though.
One thing (maybe the only thing) I liked about KL, was how people hang out with friends and eat/chat at all hours.
Would love to be able to catch up with some mates and enjoy street food at 3 AM in Perth.
Nate Von Longneck II March 1st, 2011, 07:01 AM Everything I have heard about this does not sound good.
(not many hawkers).
HOPEFULLY it will come off good, but not holding my breath.
PS - Crave, I had the "Columbian Empanadas" a week or so ago in the cultural center.
$10 for 3, and they were tiny.
You should cook some up!
Sanj March 1st, 2011, 07:08 AM i assume this is the one that matt (abstract gourmet) does? were the options pork, beef or beef and potato with either guacamole or romesco?
they're quite tasty but well overpriced IMO. their arepa is quite tasty too
he was planning on selling them at ellington on sundays as well, not sure if he's doing it though
crave - u should get into it and charge gook prices not whitey ones.
crave March 1st, 2011, 07:09 AM my other half kept pushing me to set up a stall in a few festivals in melb, but i kept saying no... had too much going on there and didn't have people interested in helping out... different story here in perth tho, gonna suss out a couple of places and test tha waters...
Sanj March 1st, 2011, 07:10 AM cool, i can definitely offer the support of my overacting appetite and expanding waistline
Nate Von Longneck II March 1st, 2011, 07:14 AM i assume this is the one that matt (abstract gourmet) does? were the options pork, beef or beef and potato with either guacamole or romesco?
Yep Matt - seems like a nice guy.
I had one of each. They were tasty, but one of them was like 3 or 4 cms across. Tiny. I had the guacamole, that was tasty as well.
Crave, totally do it. I will spread the word.
jarkti March 1st, 2011, 09:14 AM Had the cheeseburger sushi from Iku on William st yesterday. It's good! Not what I was expecting. I'll be returning, so hopefully this place stays around.
Can you (or anyone) try describe them to me?
whats in them and stuff?
steve_87 March 1st, 2011, 09:56 AM Cocktail bars?? Anyone?
Nate Von Longneck II March 1st, 2011, 10:02 AM Can you (or anyone) try describe them to me?
whats in them and stuff?
Starting from the inside - small chunky pieces of marinated beef, placed next to cheese, then rolled, sushi style, with rice and Nori (seaweed), then, the whole thing is fried in a tempura batter. This melts the cheese inside, making it nice an goo-ey and stringy. The whole thing is surprisingly "light" as in, the frying is very japanese/tempura style.
Then, the roll is cut into six pieces, like sushi, and served with a japanese mayonaise dipping sauce (tastes a bit like a cross betwen typical "Cupi" style japanese mayo, and thousand island dressing).
It's quite hard to explain - even with this explanation, you won't be able to quite picture it!
It's 7.50, worth a roll of the dice Jarkto.
ryan79 March 1st, 2011, 10:08 AM That makes me want them even more!! Better than I imagined.
Start my new job next week - first port of call for lunch!
jarkti March 1st, 2011, 10:18 AM God, that sounds nice!
I want one, next time in the city I'll go past and grab one :)
7.50 sounds pricey though!
Matt B March 1st, 2011, 11:50 AM It is a great little sushi joint. I just started a shortish contract in Albert Facey House and have lunched there mon and tues. It is only now I see it is cooked fresh not in the fridge with the rest of the sushi. I thought maybe they'd always sold out when I got there. (as they had with the $1 water today). Ahh well, there is always wed, thurs and Fri.
jackso March 1st, 2011, 12:14 PM The Katsu and Karaage both look pretty good too, though I have not heard anything yet.

Dilaz89 March 1st, 2011, 03:17 PM Cocktail bars?? Anyone?
Bar 399. Can't beat it.
ryan79 March 1st, 2011, 03:26 PM Did that place used to be a nightclub or is there another nightclub with a number on William St?
Matt B March 1st, 2011, 03:52 PM Do a bar crawl through northbridge. It's not a hen's night unless the bride to be is in public drunk with a veil on her head. Just work way up William St from Ezra Pound to 399. Or vice versa.

It used to be the best video games arcade in Perth. It was called "Spectrum".

There was a strip club/nightclub pretty much across the road, can't remember what it was called. It was seeeeeeedy.

I know where now. Not the place I was thinking of so this is a new place.
Across the road, was at once called Nu Vibe (I just looked it up and it looks like its open again?). The name of the strip club escapes me to but it was famously dodgy.

samboy March 2nd, 2011, 09:07 AM Is this the one opposite the old Globe? I passed out there on my bday. Don't remember much but I was told my mates dragged me onto the stage. I'm pretty sure I was tampered with.
Sanj March 2nd, 2011, 09:09 AM haha the site. it was disgusting
nate - tried the cheeseburger sushi today for a healthy breakfast. pretty good! a bit greasy but not overly and the chicken was uneven but overall pretty good. im normally a bit of a sushi snob but this was worth trying. the lady there who i suspect has a stake in it was quite nice as well, genuinely wanted feedback, spoke about the response etc. i hope they do well.
i think they use a machine to make their nigiri which im sceptical of so i will have to go back to try.

samboy March 2nd, 2011, 09:12 AM nope the site was above sparrow, next to mela
aaah that shithole. yeah I remember now. Never really dared.
Come to think of it, besides that there were shitload more brothels in Perth at the time. We used to go B-Hoping with mates, spend 30-60mins at each place, have a chat with the girls, watch a bit of TV, take the piss out of old/married men trying to act inconspicuous and just bugger off. They were mostly very friendly and noone cared. Even offered drinks every now and again. The good old days.
Sanj March 2nd, 2011, 09:43 AM just spoke to an old friend who lives in bangkok, havent seen him since he left perth 10 years ago.
turns out he owns a restaurant, bar, nightclub and his family owns a food market. gonna be awesome!
