Yo, Uber cool ssc'er!

when you think classy (smaller) nightclubs in Perth which ones pop to mind??

Geisha?
Ambar?
Eurobar?

I am researching venues and their profile/image amongst the Perth clubing scene. I am kinda out of the loop, so some of your preconceptions would be appreciated. :-)

eurobar would probably be the least offensive although the fuckwits at eurobar are probably the worst of the 3.

geisha doent fit the bill IMO and ambar is too dark etc.

Yeah my work mates have been begging for a regular pub/bar in this hood... FINALLY we got somewhere to go in walking distance. Surely lots of other West Perthies are in the same boat... it should do well.

Pros:

Monteiths Beers.
Open Balcony area.

Cons:

Only monteiths on tap (DONT try the summer ale. Its aids.)
Clears out by 8pm. Deffo not a late night haunt.

The menu looks very appetizing to me.

Its pretty good actually. Had steak there a couple of times. Also their other place over near Canning Bridge is quite good. However there is still a severe lack of good steak in the City / Northbridge (Beaufort St Steak House was good I thought, but was out of the way and only lasted about 6 months!)

Samboy must have given it the 6 month curse

Yeah - closed before Christmas. Real shame - great idea, nice place, manager who really seemed to want to make it work, but no footfall past there apart from backpackers walking back to Billabong and people going to the Brisbane. If it was a few hundred metres closer to either the centre or Northbridge or out towards the Beaufort St strip I think it would have done a lot better. Only went once but was going to take my folks in December when they visited me... and then saw they were closed.

rockpool, hippo creek, old brewery restaurant, zebras and fibber mcgees all have a fair few steaks on the menu and all dry age their own meat as far as i know (apart from maybe zebras)

Accidental Monsters of Meaning starts this week!

Running for 11 days at the WA Museum, this latest choreographic adventure is a performance installation that examines the contradictions we face living in a culture rife with consumerism. You are invited to navigate your way through the space and consider what it will take for our species to survive.

edit -

In March the WA Museum will transform its temporary exhibition space into a living environment of dancing bodies. Accidental Monsters of Meaning is a live-art installation examining the monsters of our time and where they are leading us.

In a room filled with display cases five dancers twist and turn through imagery of consumer culture, are remote controlled by the audience, travel through an arctic wonderland and converse only in advertising slogans. Choreographer Aimee Smith invites you to navigate through this space and ask the question, what will take for our species to survive?

Uncle sanj's tip of the day - order the roo burger rare or medium rare, likewise with wagyu. They'll also take more care I general as it's a special order.

They'll often cook it medium and not med rare though

Went to Jus Northbridge last night. Got my usual cheeseburger with avocado. It was great. Looks like they've completely ditched the oil on the top of the bun now. Good move. No alcohol served but for $2 per person drinking, you can bring in your own booze which isn't bad.

Ezra was comfortably busy. It was pleasant outside in the laneway bit but there were no seats so my two mates an I stood to the side chatting and drinking. We were told that we had to go inside and wait for some space if we wanted to go outside because their license doesn't allow people to stand outside, even though the area is completely enclosed and clearly part of the venue only. Went to the Brisbane after. Still full of posers and still can't get over the price of drinks in Perth. Ahhhh Perth.

I do love that part of Perth though. A few small tweaks to a few laws and it'd god from being good but frustrating, to great.

where are you staying?

can you be bothered with a bit of a trek? are you alone?

you really should experience these butter crabs but it is in PJ which will take you 45-60 mins but are well worth it, i had it in jan and again in march when i was in kl for 24 hours.

will see if geri is free to take you, it's better with more people.

so yeah, butter crabs at wong poh in petaling jaya, banana leaf (she will know the best places, well worth trying), nasi kandar (nasi kandar pelita has around 5 outlets and is pretty good but not the best) and this midnight joint she took me to that has really nice frogs legs, hokkien mee and these killer chicken wings. will send a msg to her on FB and CC you then the 2 of you can take it from there. she works and lives near petaling jaya so hopefully she can fit it in.

by the way you might be thinking they're just chicken wings but i assure you they arent cos they're fucking beautiful. KL hokkien mee is nice there too, plenty of crispy lard.

how do i credit the poor bastards flickr account who i knicked the photos off? i dont want to do a goran

edit - it appears that wong ah wah isnt where she took us. im pretty sure it was on the same street but we went to another place. WAW looks like it is the most famous one but id go with the one we went to.

if you want more of a big budget seafood meal (still cheap compared to perth) go to unique seafood, also in PJ. the cooking is a little bit patchy at times but the produce is amazing. there are 100 tanks of different live seafood including stuff i guarantee you havent seen before. you need a few people to do it justice though

I've been meaning to ask NVL, considering you said you're a fan of laksa, whether you know of any good places in Perth? My local is ok...but whenever I've tried it in the last few years at other places I've not had much luck.

I'm a huge fan, it's one of my favourite dishes in the world. Unfortunately, my favourite curry Laksa restaurant (Angs) was taken over by new owners.

The Laksa suffered greatly.

I'm still recovering, after probably 100 Laksa's during the last 5 years, I haven't found another anywhere near as good.

Fortunately, a good friend can make a damn good authentic Laksa, but as it takes him several days of shopping for ingredients, and the best part of a day in prep/cooking/and then eating, it doesn't happen too often.

I'm open to suggestions - which one is your local?

nate - purely as a punt it may be worth trying a place in kardinya called satay mu or something like that. it is next to the chicken treat on south st.

ive only been once when i came across it by chance 2 weeks ago but the mee goreng i had was quite impressive, dad also enjoyed his pork noodles. they go to a bit of effort, eg home made cincau/grass jelly drink and they have laksa on the menu.

definitely a punt and the rest of the menu could be entirely shit but you never know i guess.

incidentally the one at angs was tasty but not all that authentic IMO

Does anyone know how to find DAs for the Victoria Park council? There is a big sign up outside a building on Leonard Street near Albany Highway saying something about a "commercial kitchen" (whatever that means) and that if you have comments on the proposal to contact the council.

I want to find whatever DA has been filed in case that has clues to what is being proposed for the site.

cheers - yeah, I'm not one to get bogged down with "authentic" discussions - I've had curry Laksa's in Singpore, KL, Penang - they would all claim to be "authentic", but all are quite different.

I know that the family from Ang's are formerly Penang hawkers (I actually visited the owners sister's stall in Guerney Drive, Penang a couple of years ago), so, they definitely know what they are doing.

I've heard about the Kardinya place - been there for years? Never visited, but Malaysian friends have recommended it for a long time.

Sanj

i realise that different people make it differently but theirs had a little bit of a chicken curry type of flavour, similar to the eden place in freo (unless im confusing the 2). there were also huge chunks of chicken thighs which seemed out of place. i do agree that it was tasty though and when you asked for it hot it came out properly spicy.

this kardy place has only been around for a year or 2 i believe.

Father in law makes a tasty Laksa.

he is closing his store for a reno in about a months time, but when he reopens he isnt doing chinese food anymore... He has been trying to sell for about a year but hasnt been able to. Mostly cos he is dealing with dodgy chinese buyers. haha!

So he is doing burgers etc, and hopes to sell within the first 3 months of reopening... He only pays $170 a week in rent (with another 5 years left on the lease)!!! that alone would be reason enough to buy him out!!

One of my favourites too.

Wing Bo in Maylands. It would fail your whitey ratio test miserably though.

It's amazingly consistent but there seems to be two different people who make it, one makes it less sweet and hotter and the other one makes it milder and sweeter. It's the only thing I get from there and have been going for six years, so I've analysed the nuances :). Always has three prawns, some chicken thigh and two of those tofu pillows.

speaking of whitey ratio, i went to endless delight chinese restaurant (newcastle st, just up from coles), packed house for tha hour we were there... tha only whitey was one sitting next to me...

if you're looking for anything watered down for whitey's, you'll be disappointed... i think they specialise in schezuan cooking... burny! heee.wooo!

nate - purely as a punt it may be worth trying a place in kardinya called satay mu or something like that. it is next to the chicken treat on south st.

ive only been once when i came across it by chance 2 weeks ago but the mee goreng i had was quite impressive, dad also enjoyed his pork noodles. they go to a bit of effort, eg home made cincau/grass jelly drink and they have laksa on the menu.

definitely a punt and the rest of the menu could be entirely shit but you never know i guess.

incidentally the one at angs was tasty but not all that authentic IMO

What is your idea of an authentic laksa then Sanj? I know there are different ones from different regions, but it seems we only get one type here, done variously?

I'm working near Kardinya this week, should try eating something other than canteen food.

ive had endless delight twice, once was around 10 days ago, excellent. bought takeaway 2 nights ago and was extremely disappointed. everything had been dumbed down, i felt like i received the whitey special. 2 of the dishes that were repeated were nothing like they had been a week prior. ill definitely give them another go but theyve certainly got issues in the consistency department.

Yes, I used to go there a bit when I first moved here, but I was just trying random things and was mostly disappointed. Their laksa was terrible! I like the atmosphere in that place a great deal though, the outdoorish area. I've not been there much lately. I'm glad you mentioned particular dishes though, thanks, I'll try those next time. Maybe like Matt said, you've just got to know what a place does well. Maybe that aught to be dinner tomorrow night, otherwise I'll forget the names... I love you Sanj, it's like being set dinner homework :).

Nate Von Longneck II

Endless delight - agree with sanj, there is a consistency problem. I went a few times, but really, I can't go past Maks in chinatown these days. Once a week. Last weekend, we sat in the laneway, smoked our lungs out at dinner, at the table. It was like going back in time...

The waiter said "if the cops come, don't smoke!"...then he sat down on a crate, directly under the "no smoking" sign in chung wa lane, and lit up a smoke.

This solidified Mak's as my favourite chinese in Perth.

RE: the ceramics shop...ha, I have taken so many people there, everyone buys something! They are closing really soon.

RE: Coles - yep, they will never have a liquor land there. It's all thanks to the Aboriginals. If you think I'm being racist - I'm not - some Aboriginal group actually petitioned for there to NOT be a bottle shop at that location. Stupid fucks, the fact is, sniffing is the substance abuse of choice in that location. Again, not being racist - I see it everyday.

Kelli - I will give Wing Bo a go, thanks for that.

Brisbane gathers MOS
Georgia Waters
March 18, 2011

A MOS Burger outlet in Singapore. Inset: a rice burger.
Sashimi. Teppanyaki. Tempura. Hamburgers?

The latest eatery to open in Brisbane is not your usual Japanese joint.

MOS Burger will be familiar to anyone who's spent time in Japan as the country's second-largest fast food chain, offering hamburgers, drinks and fries with a wasabi-mayo twist.

The chain - with 1500 outlets across Asia, 1400 of which are in Japan - chose Sunnybank as the site for the first of a planned 100 across Australia.

MOS Burger spokesman Paul Su said the Sunnybank Plaza location was selected as the best place in the country to test the Australian market and the company expected to open at least four more stores across Brisbane by the end of the year.

It's currently under construction and is expected to be open by the end of March.

''Sunnybank was chosen because of its high Asian population, so it’s a good test site,'' he said.

''It will give us the chance to start localising the menu for the Australian market.''

MOS’s most famous menu item, a burger made with a ‘bun’ of cooked rice, will be available, Mr Su said.

Other typical menu items include pork katsu and marinated fish burgers, side orders of fried prawns and mussels and milk tea.

The company was launched in the early 1970s in Tokyo by Satoshi Sakurada on his return from working in Los Angeles.

MOS – an acronym of Mountain, Ocean, Sun – is technically fast food but the company's focus on good service means customers will typically wait ten minutes for their meals.

Mr Su said he'd been searching for staff for the Sunnybank store and had sent six overseas for training.

MOS has its share of Australian fans, including Sydney's Gary Peck.

Mr Peck, who launched his Bring the MOS to Oz website after being told the company would not expand to Australia, said its arrival Down Under was a long time coming.

"I been working hard to bring these handfuls of happiness to Australia for many years and I'm so happy and excited to learn that through my efforts or not, it's finally happening," was his ever so slightly tongue-in-cheek response to the news.

"I have dreamed of the day Mos Burger would come to Australia. I just hope people understand what it means for fast food in this country."

Hey Sanj, thanks for the recommendation. I went to Mrs S for brekky today and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The place was packed and people waiting outside. The waitress was very nice and after a short wait found a table for us.
Overall, despite the crowds the waitresses are friendly and not flustered. The coffee is ok (I wasn't expecting anything great anyway) and my poached eggs on toast was done nicely. Prices aren't over the top either. Next time I'm going to try something a little more elaborate after having a quick squeeze at other people's plates. Shame they don't do baked beans.

You know somethings going to be good when they truncate the name of the country of origin, and have to emphasise that the ingredients don't come from the garbage can.

edit: This kind of reminds me of that place in the city that shut down a year or so ago... They sold falafel wraps with a bunch of vegetarian fillings at a massively inflated price. Can't remember what they were called, but they were tasty. They seemed to operate on this idea that they charged more because you could keep going back to the salad bar to 'refill' your falafel thing with more toppings, but that idea never, ever made sense to me. Who eats the fillings without eating the surrounding wrap/bun/whatever?

...Anyway. Fresh Mex Grill...! Prove me wrong, children. Prove me wrong.

on a whim, went to "sizzle mania" for lunch the other day. Not recommended.

note to self - search this thread on phone before entering random eatery! Thursdays I can get out for a longer lunch, Phung Vin closed thurs, thought lunch specials looked ok, laksa, not good.

I should try that duck place on east side of William a bit further north.

So if headng a bit further north to that "chinatown" any advice anyone?

You absolutely have to go to Good Fortune roast duck. Ask for the plum sauce.

I have had Laksa at Joy Cafe a few times now. Not a world beater, but perfectly good for lunch. With a drink, I pay about $12.

mela can be good but can be frustrating also. my family eats there more than any other indian place in perth which i suppose is an endorsement of some kind.

tra vinh, i cant stress enough that this is imo the best viet in perth. try the broken rice, pho and spicy soup noodles. soursop shake is awesome on a hot day too

perth is sadly lacking in that department. the one at ten ten isnt too bad and is very good value at $7.50 but still not excellent. i make a pretty good chicken rice actually but i use more of a master stock instead of straight chicken stock so it comes out more like the soy chicken rice.

ORLY!

I had a chicken rice in Singapore couple of years ago or so, at Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice, Stall 10, Maxwell Food Centre.

To this day, I consider it one of the best meals I have ever had in my entire life.

I didn't know rice, or chicken, or tangy lime chilli sauce, could taste that good.

Just searched it on google - this shows the line, daily, of people waiting for chicken rice at Tian Tian. In this hawker center, there are probably 100 or so other options, so for someone to get a line that long, its gotta be good.

I dont think its about bland chains vs good pizza joints, its about the fact that most people care about price a lot more than about quality or taste.

Domino's on Albany Highway will sell me a meat-lovers pizza for $7.95 (cant find any information on how large said pizza is)
Brando's (a good local pizza joint) charges $13 for a meat lovers pizza in a 23cm size. (more for larger sizes)
The Domino's offering has bacon, ham, pepperoni, beef and Italian sausage.
The Brando's offering has bacon, ham and pepperoni only.

Most consumers will pick the Domino's pizza because its cheaper and has what they perceive as "more" toppings.

dominos used to be shit but nowadays their toppings have improved quite a bit. Having said that I'll only buy it when I have a 4.95 coupon.

Yep.

Three pizza's at a "gourmet" pizza place = minimum $60 these days.

Three pizza's at Domino's = less than $20 usually.

Domino's will offer better specials, will offer delivery, and won't close at 9pm.

If you want to compete with Domino's, at triple the price, you need to have a really tasty pizza, good opening hours, convenient location, consistency, and impeccable customer service.

I said that it got both smaller AND more expensive, meaning it was worse value for money at that point (i.e. you pay more and you get less)

As for my own pizzas, I use a Breville Emporia Stone Cooked Pizza electric pizza oven.

It looks like this

I would love some Pizza tips Samboy...

I have a terra-cotta stone, but have now switched to one of the metal trays with holes in the bottom - kind of diamond shape cutouts all over the base.

I pre-heat the oven as hot as I can get it (last time, I put it on max, and had the best result yet). The crust was great, the top was great, it was overall the right level of firmness. This was with the metal tray.

I'm also a non-rolling-pin man.

Any general tips? I love cooking simple food, where a small number of variable can produce a vastly different result. I completely understand why Japanese chefs train for ten years to cook a bowl of noodles...

speaking of heating the oven. I guess it depends on the oven but mine doesn't get as hot as I would like it on the backheat fan forced setting. The top grill setting (with fan) is hotter so I just use that. Extra care is required not to burn the toppings but they hardly ever do. Well worth experimenting with it if you have that option. Pre-heat and get it as bloody hot as it would get.

I'm using a pizza stone but happy to give the metal ones a go. how much are they?

Nate Von Longneck II
April 15th, 2011, 04:12 AM
Yep, I agree, get that oven as hot as it can get.

The trays are cheap, less than $10 from a kitchen-supply place. I read that it simulates having a hotter oven - kind of a cheats way, if you're a purist.

So you pre-heat the stone using the oven grill?

Yup I preheat stone and bake using the grill setting. Pizza on middle tray. Suprisingly it doesn't burn the toppings. I manage to turn it around in around 5-6mins. Although I wish I had an oven that can do it in less. Probably woodfire territory.

thickness varies according to my mood nate but I generally like to keep it quite thin. Probably slightly thicker than the 'thin and crispy' bases.

I use semolina to stop it sticking as it doesn't stick to the bottom of the dough (like flour will) and the courser texture makes the dough slide a lot better.

Yep, between Aberdeen and Newcastle, west side of street.

It's been average at best, since day one.

Long story, but also, they used to claim they were the new "Hoi's Kitchen".

Hoi's kitchen was a legendary Dim Sum from the early 90's in Perth. The Dim Sum Cafe has no connection whatsoever to Hoi's Kitchen (they told me this), and yet, thought it was proper to advertise as "the new Hoi's kitchen"

dodgy!

I go to Iku Sushi probably 2-3 times a week as it is good and very convenient for me. Friendly smile and hello to the boss and other regular staff etc.

Today I'm sitting outside watching a local band who were set up in the courtyard (odd set up but very nice tunes), and the boss wanders out, I say hi, we have a nice chat, I introduce myself as Matt, and she asks if I post on SkyscrapercCity? ESP? Do I have a tattoo on my forehead? I've forgotten her name oops but apparently is a bit of a lurker here so "HI!".

P.S. I found out also that the soy bean pods that are with the salads, well you only eat the beans inside not the whole thing. I've tried both (only had them there) but was never sure which would get those in the know pointing and laughing:) I'm glad it is only meant to be the beans as the pods are pretty tough:)

ps: That shit is addictive I buy it all the time from the oriental shop down the rd from you. Can easily eat the entire bag in one sitting and that's not even the good stuff.

Just thought it was time for a new avatar.. and, seeing as though I enjoy nothing more than a poorly drawn face tattoo, gucci it was.

stinky - havent been there but have heard predominantly good things. the peopel who loved it arent too big into their food so keep that in mind

Thanks, I should try it myself, it's just around the corner, not that big on seafood though.

You were right, Sherbet has changed hands, about a month ago apparently.

Yes, it was Aquarium. It's such a strange looking place. There is a Japanese restaurant opened in that area too recently.

Just ate the Sherbet banana bread, the new people have added more sugar to the recipe and it's wrong now.

One of my biggest pet hates is excess sugar. I have a sweet tooth and love my chocolates, cakes and desserts - time and time again though I come across places who, in an attempt to appeal to the masses or mask the poor quality ingredients I'm not sure, use far too much sugar.

the new banana bread is shit. the texture is completely wrong too.

i have not had any cake from shervet since before my holiday in early march because im afraid it'll break my heart when i do.

some of the cakes dont look quite right and you cant feel the love in the place anymore

ah well, it was good while it lasted. it's just a shame there wasnt any warning prior to it happening

A pet hate of mine too, the sugar thing. Why take over a place like Sherbet if you're just going to make it like everywhere else? The other ingredients were the same, just the sweetness... A lot of people are just happy if they can taste sweet and don't care about real flavour, including a lot of chefs.

I wonder if the 'handover' included recipes as well or these guys are trying to improvise.

I give'm 6 months

They had a two week handover apparently, I assume that would include the recipes.

sherbet had a bit of a cult following. If they're turned to shit I suspect once the weekend bikers die off in winter business could be struggling.

i love all tha little food places that have propped up on murray st between barrack and pier st... it's like a whole set of little ethnic tuck shops, people should really embrace it and get them to step up tha food a notch... i like how tha shops aren't big cafe set-ups, mostly small little places... i like how tha focus isn't on alcohol, i suppose that could be it's disadvantage for now is that after work most people want to drink...
