So we ventured out to the XO lounge/bar/restaurant with the Mrs tonight to redeem the old scoopon.

First (and lasting) impressions - It's surprising how much money someone can spend on a fitout on all the wrong places. I have no doubt shitloads has been spent yet it has zero soul and an awkward dynamics. Not to mention nothing will guarantee any class but hey that's not necessarily the establishment's fault.

Anyway, the service is very friendly but clumsy and amateur. They're trying hard but simply can't pull it off. The antipasto entree was nothing special. The king prawns were more like king one day prawns. The mains were nice and tasty (Steak and Barramundi) but nothing more than what you'd expect at a good cafe. The dessert (orange mousse cake) was pleasant but didn't taste like a mousse should.

Put it this way, for the price I paid ($89) we came away satisfied however for the price I would have paid without a scoopon ($240) I would have been majorly pissed off.

The majority of diners looked to be the coupon crowd. The bar seemed noisy but there weren't more than a dozen people there.

It's just a bad concept for Perth poorly executed. I give them 6 months or whenever the coupons run out. Whichever comes first.

I had a beer there a while ago. Bar tender seemed nice, they had been open 3 months at this point I think. Definitely agree on the fit out, pretty cold, bland etc.

They can probs survive on the lunch and after work crowd from Exchange..

The problem with Perth is, at the risk of sounding like a broken down record, that the price to value ratio is just way off. In HK, I had a 5 course meal, absolutely divine food and excellent service at L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon, and the meal + 2 Asahis, came to just a shade under AUD$100. This is Friday night, at one of the best restaurants in HK.

It will be a big reverse culture shock coming back to WA service, quality, and prices.
I know there are places in Perth that look after their customers, but the average is pretty poor.

Pay a premium + eat shit + treated like a number = Perth, WA.

i love all tha little food places that have propped up on murray st between barrack and pier st... it's like a whole set of little ethnic tuck shops, people should really embrace it and get them to step up tha food a notch... i like how tha shops aren't big cafe set-ups, mostly small little places... i like how tha focus isn't on alcohol, i suppose that could be it's disadvantage for now is that after work most people want to drink...

I like that area as well, the tiny coffee booth with the big man in it is too cute.

The price you pay for high wages for low income earners, low competition and people who are willing to pay the price.

I don't think its that bad. There is still a lot of quality, its just expensive.

Should try Karratha. Their best restaurants are like our average ones but you pay 10 bucks extra for a main and the service is pub service at best.

it's a decent break from the usually crappy paninis you would get elsewhere for lunch. it's hard to describe as they have all sorts of foods, but u can tell the owners are really trying, and using good ingredients. i would highly recommend it to local CBD workers.

it's only been operating for a month or two i think, having taken over from what was probably a generic operator.

Police to target bottle shops in liquor war
RONAN O'CONNELL, The West Australian April 25, 2011, 2:45 am

The war on alcohol being waged by WA Police has shifted focus from pubs and clubs to bottle shops, with officers attempting to stop supermarkets from expanding their liquor empires.

Police have put submissions to the Liquor Commission against Woolworths' applications to open Dan Murphy's shops at Bicton, Cockburn and South Fremantle.

Police opposed ultimately successful applications by Woolworths for a liquor store within its supermarket at Warnbro Fair shopping centre and by Lima Lima Pty Ltd for an IGA Plus Liquor shop in the same suburb on the grounds the area was already saturated with retail alcohol outlets.

There were six liquor outlets nearby - five bottle shops and a tavern.

It is the latest attempt by police to curb the availability of alcohol after their successful lobbying to have restrictions placed on the opening hours of licensed venues and the types of alcohol sold at pubs and clubs.

Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan said in submissions to the commission that granting either of the licences in Warnbro was not in the public interest and could contribute to "harm or ill-health" to members of the local community through alcohol consumption.

He said there were already enough liquor outlets in Warnbro, which police statistics showed suffered problems with antisocial behaviour.

Director of Liquor Licensing, Barry Sargeant, echoed the police concerns, submitting that granting any more liquor licences in Warnbro could result in a rush of applications for new stores by competing liquor outlets.

He wrote that even the potential for a "minimal increase in the risk of alcohol-related harm" was a concern.

Woolworths argued in its submission that the population of the suburb had increased by 45 per cent since the last liquor store licence was given in 2001.

The supermarket said it had commissioned independent market research of 409 customers that found 70 per cent of respondents thought its proposed Warnbro store was a "good idea".

A Woolworths spokesman said yesterday that the company welcomed debate on their liquor licence applications and were active participants in many local community liquor accords. In granting the Warnbro licences, the commission said that the evidence provided by police and Mr Sargeant indicated the decision was "unlikely to have any discernable negative impact on the local community".

The commission is yet to decide on the applications for the Dan Murphy's stores.

Liquor Stores Association of WA executive director Lindsay James said there was no need for a "liquor store on every corner" and he supported tight regulation of new liquor store licences.

Didn't have time for a proper lunch anyway in the end, but popped down the alley to Hay St and had takeaway chicken katsu in some kind of curry sauce, strange. Although there are quite a few pleasant lunch areas to sit in on Hay at least.

On the way out afterwards I went to Venn for coffee though. Looking at the menu I liked the idea of the Half/Half on the menu, half serve of soup and half salad. Their salads sounded nice too.

I can confirm that as of today there is a vendor called Curry Munchers open in the One40William food court. Looked like the same rather bland generic crap you find at any number of other vendors in the CBD (Carillion food court is particularly notorious for this IMO)

What the CBD really needs is more variety instead of YET ANOTHER Thai, Sushi, Subs/Salads, Japanese, Kebabs, Burgers etc)
Although for lovers of Mexican, check out this page
http://www.salsas.com.au/main/Franchising/Available_Sites_u/default.aspx
It claims Salsas want to expand to Raine Square (when it opens presumably) and also to Carillion City (with there being 3 or 4 different vacant shops in Carillion City, I am sure there is a suitable site)

Oh and whoever had the brilliant idea to open a Nandos on William Street should get a bonus, that place was fairly busy again today when I went there for lunch and I think its got a great long-term future in that location.

So yeah if there is a particular franchised brand you want to see open in your area, checking their website and franchise site list may tell you where they plan to open in the future :)

City kiosk plan dubbed boring
BEATRICE THOMAS, The West Australian
April 29, 2011, 2:25 am

The City of Perth's street traders policy has been branded boring and over-regulated after the council finally settled on a tourist booth four years after it vowed to bring at least three colourful new kiosks to the Murray Street mall.

In 2007, the council flagged organic fruit and vegetables, flowers and international newspapers as preferred uses for the kiosks to add vibrancy to the city.

But only one kiosk has been installed and remains vacant, with the most recent of three tender processes failing to come up with one operator the council's works and urban development committee, which is overseeing the project, deemed appropriate.

Thirteen ideas including fresh fruit juices and crepes, gourmet popcorn, doughnuts, coffee and a kiosk selling international newspapers, postcards and flowers were all knocked back in January.

However, on Wednesday night the council agreed to a six-month, $600 trial lease with Tourism WA's visitor centre operator, Best of Australia Travel Centre.

Lynda Dorrington, of Perth cultural think tank FORM, said yesterday another tourism booth 50m from the council's own information kiosk was "boring, boring, boring".

"Is that what people really want or do they want to stumble across the flower grower stall on the way home," she said.

Ms Dorrington said the city had lost the characters of the old stalls and the approach was too cautious.

But Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi, who sits on the works committee, said the kiosks offered separate services, with one offering tours around WA and the other information about the city.

She said the 13 recent proposals were either in direct competition with retailers, did not have detailed business plans or failed to meet other operating criteria.

"We're being deliberate to make sure we get the right operator within the first kiosk before we then proceed with others," she said. Last year, Perth's hot-dog man and last street vendor was booted out after complaints about the smell.

FuturePerth chairman Sean Morrison said the greatest places were those which had life and spontaneity, which traditional street vendors provided.

Haha! I merely disliked palms before the cocos craze, by the end of it I was physically repulsed by them.

Palms don't do much, they're purposeless - no shade, no fruit, no beauty, no story (except outside a mosque). And they're not suited to a hot dry windy climate and people don't prune them, so they look ratty. I don't like any of the 'architectural' plants actually, they make a hot dry city look even more desolate. Quite a few species are native to Australia though.

The date palms and dwarf date palms both have nasty spikes. That reminds me of the bouganvillia we used to have around the side of the place in Bassendean where I grew up. You soon learnt not to go around that side without shoes/thongs on.

Big Morley drawcard
27/Apr/2011
By Liam Croy, Eastern Reporter

http://www.inmycommunity.com.au/_uploads/ArticleFeed/resized_mordraw_300_300_FitSquare.jpg

Morley’s $60m Coventry Square market is in the last stages of construction, with 88 per cent of its outlets leased.

WITH Morley’s $60 million Coventry Square Markets to be opened mid-year, Bayswater Mayor Terry Kenyon is counting down the days.

The 11,500sq m markets will become WA’s largest fresh food centre, and include 120 specialty retail outlets, 14 eateries and a tavern.

Coventry Square principal Greg Poland believed the markets would “add enormous value and vibrancy” to the Morley area.

He told the Eastern Reporter the markets were 88 per cent leased, with just one of the 14 cafe and restaurant sites remaining.

He said their design was inspired by a mix of European heritage buildings and New York City loft interiors.

“I grew up in the area, and have close connections here to friends and family,” he said.

“I want to make this the must-see place in Perth for visitors to go to.”

Cr Kenyon believed the markets would be a drawcard for both interstate and international tourists.

“What I’m most excited about is the 400-plus jobs it’s going to create,” he said.

“It’s going to be brilliant for the City.

“There’s going to be a micro-brewery, restaurants and cafes.

“It’s certainly going to bring the place to life and bring the nightlife closer to home.”

I really hope it lives up to its hype. Come on Morley you can do it.

'Final stages of construction'. That statement doesn't inspire me with a lot of confidence considering actual construction just started or rather demo just finished.

On a semi related note, on my way to the toilets I checked out the 140W foodhall again today and it's so shit there's no words to describe it. It's almost impossible to get it so wrong!! (I remember the hype)

I dont think there is a food hall ANYWHERE in WA with a crappier selection of outlets than the 140William food court.

The Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Curry places are pathetic (there are better examples of all 4 elsewhere in the CBD IMO)
I have no idea where the best pizza in the CBD is but given that pizza is usually too expensive to be a viable lunch option, I dont much care.
The Greek place is the only place even worth thinking about (I dont know of anywhere else in the CBD that has proper Greek food)

I wonder if there is anything that could save the 140William food court if it was to move into the empty shops...

Not sure either, we only had the Peruvian Pepper in the wheatbelt, every house had one though, they made good tree-houses.

Crave, you might be interested in this coming up then, annual plant sale in Mundaring (first Saturday of May each year). The WA wildflower society grow and sell all kinds of local exotica, including local native grasses, sedges and other grass-like things, mostly a few dollars each.

You could always just wander down to 130 now it has joyfully reopened! Hurrah I never have to live Leederville again! (I'd rather not leave and not have my world view challeneged). Had 2 good take aways last week, but the weekend coffee with brekkie was a bit milky/weak.

Gotta love a cafe that can be closed for what seems like a year and re-open with no noticable change in decor:) New roof, new floor, maybe some new seat coverings, but if you didn't know you'l not thihnk "wow this place has just been refurbished for a year".

Cafe 130 can kiss my hairy ass!! The whole point of that place was going there at night and having a fruit toast with my coffee. The sign on the door says opening hours until 6PM!!! Sorry no go.

I understand the rationale though as it's the same owner as that dump (greens) across the road which is extremely popular and he knows most people will end up there at night anyway. Well not this grumpy old bastard!

I will probably try their poached eggs though ;) how much is it matt?

hehe almost identical down to the placement of the tonka truck. The tightarse owner probably used slave labor or people on community service.

Hmm being a parent with no regular evening social life I didn't know that. I guess in the good old days Greens was never open in the evenings when 130 was so in terms of late night capacity it is a net gain. I quite like Greens for an evening coffee and cake I must admit. Lack of eggs a problem.

I fucking hate Greens & Co(ck).

There, I said it.

Every time I've been I have received sass and attitude from the girls behind the counter. Everything is a hassle. Everything is served with a side order of contempt. The place is lit a TV production: Whoever thought five thousand fluorescent bulbs of varying temperatures swaying in the breeze overhead was going to make for a pleasant atmosphere is insane. It is one step up from a school cafeteria - no table service, no apparent cleaning of the tables, always a bunch of weirdly wholesome youths playing pool at the back, and everyone looks awkward all the time. It has this weird YMCA/Church Of Scientology/Cult vibe that creeps me and everyone I know the fuck out. "Hey, check it out, we've got cake, band posters, plasma screens and pool tables! JOIN US IN A BRIGHTLY LIT TOMORROW!" Like the Home & Away diner run by catholics who have to resist the temptation of fifty different oversized cakes or burn forever. I hate the fact that it is the popular option by default, and that 130 is run by the same guy now depresses the shit out of me.

...Sorry, I've been wanting to rant about that place for a long time now.

I don't think we've agreed previously but you're SPOT on!! It's a shithole and I'm at a total loss to understand why it's so popular. I think people think it's a cool place and they must hang out there.

The owner of both places is extremely clever and has pretty much worked out the perth psyche. Raking it in with minimal outlay. btw DR it's been the same guy for ages. he even 'owns' the old cino 2 place, although not 100% sure what's happening there atm. finally papered up so something must be coming.

It saddens me to think there was actually something decent there (Original Greens and co) once upon a time. Don't know if anyone here remembers.

I used to get these rare roast beef rolls with a great salad and a great mustard. This is circa 1995? They really had great rolls. For a long time it didn't really work though, and I think what is there now is an improvement on what it replaced, other than bizarre lack of real food given how massive the kitchen is.

I like the pretentious pool and a game of donkey kong to be honest:)

Aside - my wife was away last week with the kids and I had a couple of evenings in Leedy - one evening great burger at Jus (although the tiny chips side is a crime against humanity), coffee at Greens, and wow life is superb with no kids lol:) (but the lack of wife was less of a plus).

Another aside... the 1.2kg King George Whiting I caught on the weekend tasted bloody superb! Absolute stonka of a fish!!

Realllly? I loved 130, mostly because, yeah, it was a dive, but it had this awkward early 90's half-baked retro-50's character about it that was kind of charming. It was nice to have a coffee and a smoke on a milk-crate out the front at 9pm or whatever.

Early 90's a 'dive' was just a 'dive' and quite pleasant to hang out. However after a while a dive became fashionable and the obligatory Perth bad and complacent attitude ensued. Pretty much downhill from then on.

This sums Perth up... everyone thinks others should do things for them! Get of your ass and coordinate some sort of underground covert opertion to install a dimmer switch. Then when you went for a coffee you could turn the dimmer no one else knows about (could even be a remote) and then back up as you leave. Mysterious.

The service was lovely and the coffee is to taste. For example I know a few coffee types who can't stand the coffee used at Pony Express and Mrs S, but lots rave about it. 2/3 have been to my liking... and it was three times in a week. If it is raining I grab a coffee on the way to the train. If it is sunny I ride and coffee is not on the agenda.

1. Dimmer switch will not work with those lights :) + To have that fucntionality it will cost him more than what he's spent on all the furniture and we all know that's not gonna happen. I'd be happy with clean sofas. And that's not gonna happen either.

2. Coffee at 130 and Greens (same stuff) is a little strange in the sense that for my taste the milky stuff is nice whereas long black is VERY average. Sign of a good coffee is in the black varieties so this place has never been that good but I quite enjoy the long Mac.

It's like the beer barn of the coffee world. Different light shades and/or warm white low watt bulbs might help? Changes the whole atmosphere.

What I liked about 130 was that it was comfortable and intimate, if you got the right spot in there. I actually like the Luna coffee lounge...comfortable old armchairs in nooks.

I suppose people order things then complain and they're just heading them off at the pass.

crave - prophet is very very good and excellent value for money. you will struggle to spend more than $30-35/head on food IMO although the banquet is also excellent and is $45 from memory. it is byo as well. highlights are shish tawook, kafta, loubiah beans, cauliflower or eggplant with tahini sauce, lentils and rice and heaps more.

ive been to ablas in carlton (i think) which has been around for decades and has always had a chefs hat and i think prophet is a fair bit better than it.

in other news, lunch today at rasa sayang: briyani rice with chicken curry, 3 kinds of veg, pappadum, unlimited achar, pickled onions, raita, awesome dried and then fried chillis AND a proper masala tea/chai for the princely sum of $12. noice

Sanj, since you asked.

Don't bother with Cafe 130. I finally went there today. The chick who makes the coffee is the same person as before. She must have had an attitude adjustment as she was very nice. The rest of the staff were surprisingly nice as well.

Coffee (LB) was absolute shite. Bitter and really terribly extracted. Harris from Woolies would taste better. Poached eggs on Toast was ok. The bread is from Lawley's so not bad and the eggs were only slightly overdone. They use BLACK & GOLD eggs (and honey and whatever else cheap they can get their hands on).

The place was absolutely packed in typical Perth 'I don't get it' fashion. I think I'd bite the bullet and head back to Zekka as at its worst it's still better than 130.

$60M MARKETS PROJECT
Tourist drawcard for Morley
• Beatrice Thomas

Tourists and locals could soon be offered shopping and food tours taking in Mandurah and Sorrento quays and the soon-to-be-finished Coventry Square Markets in Morley, under plans by the site's developer Greg Poland.

Speaking on site this week during construction of Coventry Square, the Strzelecki Group boss said he wanted to link all three tourist attractions using bus tours and marketing campaigns.

Mr Poland has a 50 per cent stake in Sorrento Quay and owns Dolphin Quay at the Mandurah Ocean Marina.

"This makes us the biggest tourist operator in WA — as far as restaurants, shops and that sort of thing, there's no one half our size," he said.

He expects the $60 million Coventry Square centre, due to open in September, to be a key tourist attraction and entice people to "the eastern suburb.

He hoped it would have a similar appeal for tourists as the Queen Victoria Market in Melbourne.

The 20,000sqm former Coventrys warehouse will become a space for 120 speciality food and retail outlets and 14 restaurants with a big alfresco area and public square and water feature facing Walter Road.

INXS Kick Tour circa 1988/89. brilliant 1st major concert I went to.
Metallica. 1993.
Faith No More around then.
ACDC Money Talks Tour.

All the $9.96 concerts - Noiseworks, Jonny Diesel and the Injectors, Baby Animals.

Ones I'll embarrasingly admit to:
Bon Jovi and Poison around 1992ish I guess. Bon Jovi was pretty cool to be honest.

Good good times.

haha it was seriously awesome... for example, see the commentary boxes up above... we went all up around there as well. It was just me and a friend (regular urban explorer like myself). We spent a couple of hours or so there, even onto the roof. He ripped his shirt almost in half, and cut his shin pretty bad. We found some twenty year old Detol, but decided against using it. There was still a lot of paraphernalia around - in the offices etc. I'm not scared of heights, but walking around the scaffolding at the top, with a back pack, a large tripod, and a heavy camera, was pretty fucking sketchy!!

Fortunately, they had already torn slithers of the roof away, so natural light was coming through. Even so, it's a lot darker in there than it looks in the photos (long exposures / tripods).

I was thinking - a lot of young people would have never seen the inside, and will be amazed at what it looks like, and that it's just being torn down.

crave

Haha at coked. I find meat bland and dry by itself, even cooked well.

I think we've had this discussion a while ago, but lots of fellows don't seem to like sauces. Salad dressing falls into the sauce category in my opinion, love dressings as well.

Kelli
May 10th, 2011, 02:25 PM
About to make dinner, one of my favourite dressings fish sauce, rice vinegar, lemon, chilli and some sweetener (diabetic tendencies, so no sugar for moi, usually would use palm sugar). On a salad with shredded cabbage, red onion, capsicum shavings, sprouts, julienned carrots and cucumber.

With steak, usually just deglaze the pan with some wine or port, or for the same reason as above, some diet lemonade of all things. Then add some mustard or garlic with butter or lemon at the end.

Sauce .
