Fremantle Myer's $30m makeover will 'rival' Claremont Quarter
Courtney Trenwith
August 8, 2011 - 5:57AM

http://images.watoday.com.au/2011/08/07/2541908/Myer-Fremantle_729-420x0.jpg

A planned $30 million upgrade of the dilapidated Myer building in Fremantle will create a new shopping precinct that will rival the up-market Claremont Quarter, the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce claims.
The desperately needed development, lodged with council last week, is expected to be enough to convince the department store to remain in the city amid speculation that it would close when its lease finished mid-next year.

As part of the upgrade, the 40-year-old building will be opened up to create shop frontage onto Kings Square, while a balcony and 500 square metres of commercial office space will be added to the third floor.

Assuming Myer remains at the site, dozens more retailers would take up about half of the 18,000 square metre floor space, which is presently unused, Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettit said.

The City of Fremantle Council, which has collaborated on the development proposal with the building's previous owner Luke Saracini, its new owner Sirona Capital (it is under contract) and Myer, supports the proposal and is expected to approve it by next month.
Fremantle Chamber of Commerce chief executive officer Peter Nolan said it would provide a much needed boost to the city's ailing retail sector.

It would likely include boutique and specialty stores that targeted shoppers' high-end discretionary spending, which would draw consumers from other areas, particularly nearby Claremont Quarter, which opened earlier this year and features Myer rival David Jones.
"That would be the hope," Mr Nolan said.
"Claremont Quarter has created an attractive destination but it's not for everybody. I would much prefer the high-street appeal, outdoor experience than the inside environment.
"The consumer will go to the environment that they think is the nicest environment. Fremantle has huge competition over a mall - it's vibrant, you can have a coffee, go for a walk and wander around the historic area. Adding more retail is just adding more opportunity to the city."

However, Claremont Mayor Jock Barker denied the proposed development would have any impact on Claremont Quarter.
"It wouldn't impinge at all," he said. "There's no comparison between Claremont's reputation for up-market shopping and Fremantle's.
"Even if it's upgraded it still wouldn't rival. Claremont is more closely aligned with Double Bay, unlike a port city."

Mr Barker said a $3.5 million upgrade of the Bay View Terrace streetscape, including more alfresco dining, new trees and angled car parking, as well as planned new bars and restaurants would make it even harder for Fremantle to compete.
"It'll have a huge impact because it'll look like a slice of Europe but it'll be a very up-market slice of Europe," he said.
Sirona Capital managing director Matthew McNeilly said while it was still early days, he wanted to see mid to high-end retailers join the centre.
He had no doubt it could compete against Claremont Quarter and Garden City Shopping Centre in Booragoon.

"A lot of people live in that neck of the woods [and] there's a bourgeoning population south of the city [of Fremantle], as well. We'd be attracting people from there," Mr McNeilly said.

"I look at Fremantle and it's long overdue for a make-over. I suspect that largely what's holding the place back is some willingness to spend some money down there.
"The council is supportive of developing a new vision for the area and we as a developer/financier are prepared to back that vision and help realise it."
Mr Pettit said the Myer building make-over would be the catalyst for the city's rejuvenation.
"I hope it will really start the rejuvenation of retail in Fremantle as an eclectic centre," he said.
"It's looking a bit tired and rundown and in need of a face lift. This will start it off."
The development application is due before council within a month.
Construction would start mid next-year and take about 12 months, during which Myer would vacate, Mr Pettit said.

trust the whitefella to find the whitest dish on the menu

you dont go to an izakaya for bento, it is similar to jun that way which also charges around $18 for a teriyaki chicken bento from memory

i reckon it will end up being around $30 per head excluding drinks for quality japanese food which is a bargain

If I went there I would have:

Buta no kakuni~Braised pork belly sweet and tender $8.00
or
Agedashi tofu~Deep fried tofu with fish stock soup $7.00

and

Tofu salad~Diced tofu and salad with special dressing $8.00
or

Miso Soup $3.00

Hungry, my fridge is depressing :(.

Davie - yes, Jun may be unlicensed, but they have no probs in you buying a size pack from next door and taking it downstairs. It's not actually an Izakaya, as sanj pointed out.

Whatever happens to MYER Fremantle, as long as they eliminate the ugliness of the building, it will be good IMO.

I kind of disagree.

While revamping the store & opening it up will make the place feel a little fresher, the entire city centre is stale. Even the more modern developments that have taken place just down the road, opposite Target/Woolstores Shopping Centre, have done nothing to improve the place.

This is just a more expensive version of that terrible paint job they gave the Queensgate carpark all those years ago. Failing to fix a problem but pretending things are improving.

Ive been friends with a lot of Salvadorenos for a long time (due to the fact I grew up in Freo and Cockburn).
During the 90's there was a bit of a war between the Salvadorenos and the Chilenos (perth's biggest hispanic community).

Did anyone else catch the ludicrous story on Today Tonight last night, which described itself as "the biggest survey of Perth cafes ever undertaken"? It then proceeded to examine like eight randomly selected cafes from across the metro area, including a Gloria Jean's, McDonald's, Muzz Buzz, and ultimately awarded the title of Perth's best coffee to some random shopping centre cafe in Noranda IIRC.

What do they charge, about $11 for a pint? I'd say the reasons would be:

The relatively small volume produced and

They charge what people will pay.

It's no longer a tiny brewery, their cartons are in most bottle shops in Perth, as well as those pint bottles. They also export their beer, 9.50 a pint is not justified if its your own beer. The only reason ill pay it us because its good beer. It went from 8 50 to 9, to 9 50 in like a bit over a year.

samboy

As a Burswood employee, they are trying to turn Burswood into the exact same replica as Crown.

Crown thinking, Crown management, Crown ideas, etc, etc although Burswood shits on Crown's bottom line (i.e. profit) each and every year for the past decade plus.

hasnt opened yet. ive been to the melb one though and it was pretty good and will be a good addition to perth dining scene but it didnt blow me away.

the famous black cod with miso is every bit as good as the hype though

I have never tried cod. Knowing how long living they are I wouldn't be able to justify eating one.

Ok, toto for vietnamese, I especially recommend the pork soft bone noodle soup. V burger bar for niceish burgers with no attitude, batavia corner for indo food although standards have dropped a bit, the imp for tapasy stuff, good but not great.

Apparently nyonya malaysian has improved, the turkish place next to oit has awesome lahmajun for 3.50. There is a new place with nice cakes and cupcakes in burswood, izumi has passable okonomiyaki but everything ekse is sub par, senoji only does friday lunch but is quite good, food for me has good salads and generous sandwiches made to order on barretts bread, reasonably priced. Crumpet used t be good but heard bad things lately. Kabuki for nice enough whitey jap food, malay joint in centro joint for good the tarik but everything else verage, cinammon whatever for surprisingly tasty lunch specisals, I went with my folks Last week, recommend the briyani or goat curry. Massive portions too.

That should do u for a while. Oh yeah, ayhans turkish kebab plave in kensington, get the chicken plate, pretty tasty plus the owner is awesomem. If you're lucky the bread wil come out of the oven just as you walk in.

Am at bivouac, stopped in on the way home. Gnocchi with oxtail ragu was ery tasty but a bit oily. Perfect winter food, good portion, 22 bucks.

General Pants is pretty decent. They haven't used the other levels but the store is pretty big and the fitout is decent. Great range, decent prices too (by perth standard). It's sure going to upset the idiots across the road at Live.

Yeah they are surprisingly good and have a decent range by Perth standards. The shop is larger than any other retailer in the city I can think of (excl Surf shop). The downstairs area has been sectioned off with a 'B' address which I'm guessing they'll be leasing separately.

i suggest going to suria soon, it is ramadan at the moment and they are doing lots of kuih (traditional malay desserts) that are hard to get in perth. im planning on going this week if i can find the time. there is also apparently a hari raya festival in balcatta being organise dby the perth malay community that i want to go to, will post details when i have them.

This is what shits me about Perth. Having to go to Girrawheen to find something decent. I just can't do it. Get in the car, drive down some godforsaken highway to some crappy shopping centre even if the food is awesome. Sprawl is putting quality cheap food out of my reach. Good blog entry that though Sanj - Good find. It is probably like 16 years since I've been to Girrawheen (use to head to the northen burbs for cricket before I gave up as I was too crap and it was too hot for this pom).

On this though, we had the PTA come to council last night talking northern corridor Light Rail. It would be pretty cool if the Light rail opens up Mirrabooka/Girrawheen etc as I'd be more than happy to make the trek on a tram. Although undoubtedly the risk is that these kind of places get forced out as others move in to take advantage of the light rail.

But I agree with Nate, there is enough vietnamese in Perth surely for one of these places to serve banh mi (which I am not embarrased to say I'd not heard of until today!).

Incidentally, you can get a surprisingly great/massive/tasty/cheap sandwich at the greek cafe on James St opposite Brass Monkey.

Sanj
August 17th, 2011, 05:29 AM
it is not having to go to girrawheen to find something decent, it is going there to get the best.

in fact one great thing about perth is the fact that we generally dont have to go too far for good to decent food from nearly any culture, you have to remember that i generally recommend the best and being singaporean i dont mind going an hour away for the best. ultimately it boils down to how important quality vs convenience is, eg i would never go to anna's considering how many good places there are 5 mins away in nb.

your gripe here isnt a fair one to be honest. plenty of people go all the way to cabramatta for the best viet as well so it isnt solely the case in perth and in hong kong i travelled nearly an hour to have the best goose despite HK being such a food mecca

re banh mi, i do agree that it is odd that there isnt some in nb/perth.

Sanj it is more the quality of the urban environment you have to travel through than the trip itself. But I will have to check out Girrawheen I guess. As I say it has been a long time. It is probably no slower to drive there than to walk to and queue at the Re Store for a roll.

I've not been to Cabrammatta, but I get the feeling it is a much more interesting place than Girrawheen aside from the food.

But that's it, I'm packing the kids in the kombi and heading to Girrawheen this weekend.

Broken rice at phong vinh > trah vinh (i have tried both)

Pho recommendation for trah vinh? The first one I had there, pretty sure it had the name "trah vinh" in the title of the dish (trah vinh special pho? something like that), was not as good as phong vinh.

had a quick lunch at bar section at rockpool today, fucking quality. good service, great food.

i HIGHLY recommend their hendricks gin and tonics with house made tonic, considering how expensive booze can be in perth $12 was pretty fair IMO. i personally had a really good blood and sand, perfectly made despite not being on the menu

2 x wagyu burgers, 1 x minute steak, 1 x spicy prawn roll, 2 x 4 emapanadas, 1 onion rings, 1 chips, 1 raddichio salad + 4 drinks was $205 which is pretty fair imo. certainly not a regular occurance but was worth the money as you can easily spend $50 per head at a suburban cafe and this was a vastly superior experience. probably couldve cancelled one, maybe 2 sides though.

goingto p'tite ardoise tonight, popped in last night for dessert and they couldnt fit me in, 100% occupancy on a tuesday!

Aye. Used to go there often with one of my towelhead mates who lived in the area, and as far as food court places go, it ain't half bad. Went to Jewel of the Park a little while ago, and yeah, I know I shouldn't complain about cheap places, but fuck, was that place shit. They're up there as far as shittest naan around Perth goes. Kick in the guts that that Indian place on Cambridge St changed hands, was one of the better places around. Their take on onion baaji I loved, but that's life.

As a consumer it can only be a good thing.

I like how Burswood is expanding into a place where you just don't automatically think gambling. Some things are still uncertain (dome's replacement, stadium, train-stations etc) but things are heading in the right direction for consumers.

Internally, as an employee, Burswood has to be one of the worst place to work at in WA. You are a number and treated like one and thats it. Retention rate has to be the worst out of any company in WA.

Speaking of melon, does anyone know what you do with bitter melon? Do you just chop it and cook it like any other veg? Don't have to salt it like eggplant or anything?

bitter melon is my favourite...

staple recipe for me is a in quick stir fry -

onion
chilli-garlic paste (pre-mix)
oyster sauce
bitter melon (1/3 inch thickness - angled slice to create sizeable lengths)

pretty much a quick stir-fry of tha aromatics then throw in melon slices, high heat, lid, spray some water into it for moisture, not soaking just create a pastey texture with tha sauce...

i don't wash tha inside or salt it to take tha bitterness out... i haven't come across around that are really bitter... tha more bitter tha more i enjoy :p

my other favourite recipe is tha pork and bitter melon in black bean sauce... you brown off pork soft bone/neck/rib then add black bean paste recipe or pre-made stuff to your liking to tender, and then whack tha bitter melon til tender... i like a bit of crunch...

we had 1 x rabbit terrine, 1 x escargot, 2 x rangers valley sirloin with bearnaise and red wine jus and 1 x apple tart tatin

all up $133

worth checking out imo, absolutely no pretension whatsoever, proper french bistro food with reasonale prices. meal wouldve been a lot cheaper had we not chosen the most expensive main $42, plus they have a pretty big daily specials menu which are priced from $22 for mains.

ill definitely be back, predominantly older waitstaff who are warm and want you to have a good time and will do what they can to make it happen. little touches like making me a fresh lot of bearnaise when i asked for more because they had run out and it came out quickly and perfectly made

only downside was that they had just run out of the stuffed pigs trotter when i ordered so ill have to go back for it. it's a special but ive been told they will have it ready for me if i give them 48 hours notice next time

That should do u for a while. Oh yeah, ayhans turkish kebab plave in kensington, get the chicken plate, pretty tasty plus the owner is awesomem. If you're lucky the bread wil come out of the oven just as you walk in.

Best kebab joint south of the river in my opinion - Black Sea Cafe, albany highway, Turkish joint.

where is it?

"West Perth" could have you looking in the wrong place IMO. It is on Carr St a block or so east of Loftus St, so WEst Perth next to Leederville not West Perth "proper".

It is a gem though. Apparently they do "locals" nights where they get all his regulars and locals in and do something special. A good mate and real foodie lives about 100m down the road and loves the place. Decent coffee and brekkie too.

acc521

To be fair it's not exactly comparable quality.

Rockpool, in relation to the quality, and prices in Perth, is fairly priced.

Nothing to do with being ''made of money''. Personally I'd rather save a bit longer and have fewer, but better, quality meals.

If you come to London jonwill, make sure you check out this place:

This reminds me of a story at Myer not that long ago.

Lady buys a top for $45.
Shop attendants tells lady if she bought an additional pair of socks for $10 she'll qualify for a special 25% promo for purchases over $50 which effectively makes the TOTAL purchase price $41.
Lady "No thanks I don't need any socks."
Shop attendant (bemused) "No problem"

I bet the same 'lady' whinges to no end when the price of milk goes up by 3.2c

Moral of the story - People are clueless and deserve to get screwed.

PS: I'm not having a go at JonWil, I just remembered the story.

that same lady wouldve probably hit the roof when she found out she was then charged $0.05 for using her eftpos card...

new tip - popped into old cathay restaurant in vic park last night, in the monadelphous finbar building. i had originally assumed it was a mainland or HK joint but turns out it is malaysian chinese

i was very impressed, impressed enough to be returning with a mate tonight.

great staff, nice fitout, licensed, very tasty food. also, they must have done a scoopon type thing cos there was a couple using a voucher and the staff did not a) treat them differently b) suggest cheaper dishes

overall portions around 25% bigger than hawkers but prices around 40% more.

they also make their own tofu in house every single day and i think it mightve been ever so slightly superior to hawkers homemade tofu in texture.

spent $43 on a really good chicken dish, tofu, rice, tea and more rice for takeaway and it was enough for a good dinner plus lunch for dad and i.

I may have done this before purely on the basis of being so damn annoyed by retailers making endless sales pitches at the cash register.

Perfect example, getting fuel at a Shell servo station yesterday..

Me: Number 4, thank you.
Attendant: Any vouchers or discounts?
Me: No.
At: Flybuys?
Me: Nope.
At: Anything else?
Me: No thank you, just the fuel.

Interestingly I was looking at the success of various promotions we have run over the past year at my company and when simultaneous promos are being run, customers always tend to go for the "simple" one, rather than the one that would save them more money, but involve a split second, simple calculation.

Although it's much cheaper, I don't know why people buy Kindle readers when there are so many tablets out there these days which do everything a Kindle can plus basically replace a computer (at least for light computer users).

Mind you, I guess the lack of screen brightness and dulled tones make reading at length on a Kindle much more enjoyable than reading on an ipad, galaxy pad etc.

Hey Sanj,

I know you were joking but if you still want it I can print it off and send it to you. A staple in one corner is all you get ;). PM me your address if you want. (I better doublecheck if I can print from kindle).

As for your 2nd question. It is an Android Tab with Kindle app. Personally I find buying a kindle not worth the money as you can do a million more things on a tab. A low end one is no more expensive than a kindle. For your mum though, the kindle may just be simpler to use.

lol I did offer you bastard! Yeah that's the title.

I got the 7" Galaxy Tab from JB's when it was $299 (no contract). For my purposes it's perfect and much more functional than a larger ipad. Works great!!

They don't have them any more unfortunately as new models are out.

There are a LOT of Chinese tabs out there for around $150-200 which more or less do the same thing (Android). They can be hit and miss in terms of quality so a little more research is required before you fork out any $$. If you ever buy one of those make sure they're the 'capacitive' screen type and have 'flash' support. The remainder of the features (GPS, 3G, Wifi etc) you can make a decision on as you're looking.

Since the deal is still valid for another 53 hours or so maybe I will pop into Redfin tomorrow when I do my normal fortnightly shop and check out their range and prices and decide if its worth taking the deal (being that I would need to be buying at least $45-$50 to make the deal worth it rather than just spending $30 directly at their store)

I must say though that the offer should be good business for Redfin, if it gets people to shop there instead of buying the garbage seafood they sell at Woolies, its a good thing.

bitter melon is my favourite...

staple recipe for me is a in quick stir fry -

onion
chilli-garlic paste (pre-mix)
oyster sauce
bitter melon (1/3 inch thickness - angled slice to create sizeable lengths)

pretty much a quick stir-fry of tha aromatics then throw in melon slices, high heat, lid, spray some water into it for moisture, not soaking just create a pastey texture with tha sauce...

i don't wash tha inside or salt it to take tha bitterness out... i haven't come across around that are really bitter... tha more bitter tha more i enjoy :p

my other favourite recipe is tha pork and bitter melon in black bean sauce... you brown off pork soft bone/neck/rib then add black bean paste recipe or pre-made stuff to your liking to tender, and then whack tha bitter melon til tender... i like a bit of crunch...

Friggen heck, they're bitter. Like eating bicarb. Ended up slow cooking it with beef to diffuse it.

You could have got a second pair anyway, despite the size being incorrect and put them in storage. Give it 30 years and they may fit. By which time, pants will cost $2499.00. Bargain!

Started with a cider at my place at 930am, then breakfast at mrs s, then off to dubrovnik where we bought cooked sausages and other cured meats, took it to the inglewood where we ate it and drank for quite a while, then pork sandwich at mondos, then off to lamonts cottesloe, then the albion, then mrs brown in nth freo, then finished off drinking more at hawkers.

1 assam prawn (really good quality local prawns, sauce couldve been more sour though)
1 redbean pancake with taro ice cream

I thought freo wass getting worse by all accounts (I'm no expert)?

I have "freo for life" friends, who are actively seeking somewhere else to move to.

Visited Mrs Brown a few weeks back - they couldn't make a basic cocktail to save their lives. At one point, the waiter, as he was clearing our table, PUT HIS FINGERS in my friends glass, she said "that's not finished yet!", he said "sorry!" and put the glass back on the table. This was after we had just been discussing how poorly made the cocktail was. A longneck of Coopers was $15. FIFTEEN DOLLARS.

I'm pretty much over going out for drinks these days. All the hassle isn't worth it for the sort of 'ambience' these establishments provide. At the end of the day the atmosphere is what we're paying the big bucks for and I can't justify it.
I'd rather have some mates over any day or just rotate between different mate's places. Much better atmosphere without the crowds/noise/bad service/overpriced drinks! Let's face it, unless you're in the 'market' (meat) there's not that much that any establishment would offer in Perth.
Now off to find some mates.

Sanj
August 22nd, 2011, 12:17 PM
all depends, in the context of food and wine it can certainly still be worth going out. i was surprised by lamonts cott to be honest, very good and varied wine list with very decent (as in low) markups, food was good, only downside was kate lamont being a little bit of her usual grumpy self. staff were excellent though

samboy
August 22nd, 2011, 04:03 PM
oh yeah I'm all for food. I was just talking about alcohol only. I've only experienced lamont at bishops and couldn't fault the wine and service. Also for those who really love a drink they were not skimping on the wine if you asked.

That's the point though isn't it. Go out for a meal and a few drinks, or go somewhere that offers something you cannot get at home - i.e. good, innovative cocktails etc.

Just going out to socialise and drink beer and premixes all night - not so much of a great proposition in Perth given the prices, rules, lack of choice, stupid little rules etc.

Keep all the cool new stuff, but bring back the old school pub where I can get a cheap pint and sit around chatting with my mates, no fuss.

^^If I had room in my kitchen I'd so be investing in one of those. They are brilliant.

I bought a Kitchenaid mixer the other day. Seems to work well - which it should since it is pretty expensive!

just got home from what was FINALLY my first visit to amuse for a gourmet traveller dinner.

$120 for 5 courses with really good wine and top service. such a good experience, carolynne the maitre d/owner is a fucking delight as well.

i love how casual they are about such seriously good food, none of the accolades have gone to their heads. will definitely be back.

what a bloody coincidence. I just clicked on something 2mins ago that took me to a chinese imitation kitchenaid.
btw kitchenaid does work very well. Just don't check how much cheaper it is in the US. As always we're getting ripped off big time.

Sanj - The US ones are 110V (hence the ripoff here). You can probably invest in a small transformer. There are also some shops in the US selling the 220V overseas version at a premium. Still cheaper than here.

Another great night at S&T Thai. Massive feed, heaps of left overs, $24.

Nate- Aborigines sleeping in your doorway tonight.

I don't spend a lot on many things anyway and only 3 or so years off paying off my place anyway. Have to start thinking of where to go with investments, I guess. Those machines are bloody heavy btw!

There is an ad in the local newspaper(s) on Coventry Square Markets saying "Opening Soon" - trying to get shops in with a mock up of the inside of the building.

well worth it anyway. I use it more than the mrs so that's saying something. I even used car wax to make it nice and shiny /sad.

I am assuming you are talking about the KA. Otherwise it will be a bit awkward.

[inset awkward silence]

So, um, what colour did you get? I went with the Empire Red, which seemed to suit the style/shape.
