dear fatties,

ran into sheree, one of the original owners of sherbet, at hoopla in kensington today. she said she works there atm, was flat out so i didnt get a chance to find out m ore info. from the brief look at the counter it looks like she is doing some of the cakes so it could be worth checking out (she did all the cakes at sherbet). hoopla was also really busy today, certainly the most ive ever seen it although i only pop in every 4-6 weeks or so

btw - kustom cupcakes peanut butter and chocolate cupcake - erection worthy, might be the best cupcake ive ever had. holy crap.

the tacos at la cucaracha were also really tasty but a touch dry. very good value too

finished off on sunday with food from kung fu kitchen - ]

braised ox tongue - delicious, really beefy, ive only had lamb tongue before but this was a very pleasant surprise
duck necks - also first time - fiddly but really tasty and spicy
some smoky tofu dish - also worth trying
chinese hamburger - im becoming a big fan of these, thanks to nate for the tip (i had been there a coupel of times without noticing it)

One recommendation I have for New York (not food related)...go to the Museum of Natural History. ive been twice to rockpool perth and twice to the bar section

first time was in the first month of opening, food was very good but service patchy. imo not worth the money paid due to the service and we all left a little dissatisfied

second time was brilliant, food excellent and service was one of the best ive had in a while from ayoung waitress, she wouldve been under 25 but really knew her stuff. i ate with 3 chefs and a couple of other foodies and all were impressed with the food. definitely worth the money

both times at the bar have been really good. once on my birthday where we spent around $50/head including drinks for a quick lunch and another time when i popped in for a burger after work

for me the bar has a bit more leeway as it is cheaper and more casual. the main dining room simply has to be very good because if it isnt it ends up not being worth the money spent. the steaks are also as good as their reputation btw, if youre with other people ordering steaks i recommend ordering a few different ones and sharing them. also, when i read the menu a month ago they had a jerusalem artichoke soup with mushroom toast, if they do still have it make sure u order it. had it in sydney 2 years ago, fucking amazing

Beauty... the bottles are expensive... but a lot cheaper than buying a bottle on a per-shot basis. Very cool to head out with people you want to impress and ask for 3 shots of your own bottle. I was in there last weekend and ran the calcs in my head...

Also - it made me realise if I'm prepared to pay for scotch at a bar then I may as well stock the good stuff at home!

+1 life is too short to drink rubbish, especially if you dont drink very often and the difference is not a lot of money (as is often the case)

just checked out the prices, still a little painful - $197 for nectar d'or which is one of my favourite mid priced single malts, i prob drink it more than any other. assuming 25x30ml shots in a bottle it works out to a saving of just under 50% over the single shot price

I lived in Korea for 13 years, and Starbucks were hugely popular. Most Koreans live in apartments, so they go there to meet friends. I went because there wasn't really an alternative, though the coffee culture is beginning to develop there. Plus, Starbucks had amazing free high speed internet. Actually, in Toronto they are quite popular too, despite there being some decent coffee shops. I think there it's because most young people live in smallish apartments near the downtown...not monster homes in the suburbs miles from downtown, like in Perth. Still, here if I had the choice I certainly wouldn't go to Starbucks. An aside, can you buy bagels in Perth? They don't seem to be very popular.

Starbucks should do ok in Perth if they opened late. Moot point though as they will never open here.

Hard to find cafes that do bagels here. Lawley's does it. There's a couple of jewish places (not cafe) that sell them too. There's a place called 'bagel shop' (or bagel house) on Hay street which sell hardly anything to do with bagels.

bagels - the kosher food joint sells them in menora or wherever they are and recently fresh provisions has started selling them, i saw them last week. i havent had them but they are meant to be authentic-ish

kosher food centre did get busted last year for unhygienic conditions but that doesnt bother me

I know I've said this before but the bagels that the kosher joint does are not authentic. They're really buttery almost like a croissant. They taste good but not like a bagel should. You've yet to try a good one it would appear. A good bagel, with fresh cream cheese in the middle - one of life's simple pleasures.

It's like pretzels. Outside of Germany (bar one place in London which closed down due to family illness), I've yet to find one that comes close to the real thing. Crispy on the outside, just the right amount of salt sprinkled on it, and soft and fluffy on the inside.

Decent number of bagel places around. Like Sanjipoo said above, Kosher food centre has decent ones. Lawley's bakeries (there's plenty of them around Perth) have multiple varieties now. Boatshed has good ones. Quite a few supermarkets have them as well.

Bagels have also entered the mainstream a decent bit now. Most cafes seem to have bagels on offer it seems.

MY reading of the agenda (it will be determined at Tuesday's meeting) is that they have approval for a cafe and loft storage (granted within last year), but want to convert the loft to more cafe and expand the cafe downstairs, but it falls woefully short of the parking requirement... and the staff recommendation needs to follow policy for such a large shortfall.

There is an alternate parking calc, however, that shows if you count all the planet businesses as one then the shortfall is not nearly as problematic.

So anyway oneperth has jumped the gun a bit with that article as the item has not even been determined by Council yet.

They are bound by what they can or can not recommend for approval, but we're not (that's not to say it will be approved).

If everyone on Beaufort St were to double their floorspace and there was no increased transport access, well they'd all go broke.

The vast majority of the time I went into Mt Lawley I parked down near where the Maccas Northbridge is and walked up. Lots of spare parking down that way.

To me it should be the councils job to provide parking to support local business growth, if parking is really that much of an issue. Its just such a fuck backwards cunt of a way to make businesses provide their own parking.

Bullswool
October 7th, 2011, 09:04 AM
If they can't provide parking, the least they can do is promote alternative transport. It shouldn't be forced upon the land owners to provide parking, otherwise you just end up with the ugly parking sprawl behind shops

samboy
October 7th, 2011, 09:05 AM
If there's such demand for parking let the bloody council build it. Everytime I've been to Mt lawley (during these alleged gridlock times - weekend nights) I've found street parking a few hundred meters down the road from Sotos on Beaufort st. So parking can't be such a huge issue. (Or people are too fat and lazy to walk for a few mins)

Sanj

Oh I want saying that was where I had to park. Def is always closer parking available even at peak times. Eg the parking lot across the road from HJs. Just saying that it's a nice walk and not really that far.

The notion of dedicated on site parking for each business in such an area is just insane.

At least we allow Cash in Lieu to be paid where parking can't be provided (to a point). Many councils would demand the parking or tell you to get f*cked. As unbelievable as it may sound we've considered progressive on the matter:)

FYI our policy says you need to provide 1 bay per certain area of floorspace (changes per type of business) and then we would offer discount on being in a local centre, close to bus stops, close to public car parks... so these guys would be looking at about only having to provide 60% of the parking required for starters. Then if there is a reasonable shortfall we take cash in lieu.

But theory goes that all businesses use the shared parking, and provide an amount of their own... and it is VERY EXPENSIVE to provide your own so those who have provided their own would cry foul if we let someone off the hook.

It seems illogical to you, but a lot of businesses on Beaufort don't want some other business to expand and take their share of the parking.

But generally parking is always controversial, and I can tell you that since I'm a bit of an expert as a transport planner, that every dumb f*ck reckons they know best;)

Not illogical, anti-competitive. Things move on. If you had to provide parking under the old rules and now the rules have progressed, tough luck. Worst thing that happens is that there is more competition, more people in the area, and if you can keep your business running well, you'll make more money. If you're shit, you'll lose out the the competition and go bust.

Nate - did you see the Liquor Licensing article in the West's Inside Cover today or yesterday (I forget which - it has been a long week)? About your mate Barry.

No!

I'm in Melaka, Malaysia, right now.

Nyonya style Laksa for dinner, I had two lunches today (Nasi Kandar and then Wanton Mee), and a full breakfast (scrambled eggs on toast). Fresh portuguese style egg custard tarts for desert, then an Ais Kacang for a second desert. Then some other kind of pastry that I have no idea what it's called, but it came fresh from the oven. It's damn hot here! I am eating a much as I can possibly eat, and loving it.

Standing, sitting, on the street, or indoors, someone is always ready to serve you a cold beer. You can drink beer wherever you like, no license for the vendor required.

Off to Kuala Lumpur tomorrow morning, the coach is costing me $4.35 AUD.

Singapore was great, had an enormous 2.5kg Sri Lankan chilli crab, and of course Tian Tian chicken rice. We ordered 13 dishes for 4 people at an Indian restaurant, and had Chinese men nodding and grinning with approval at the glutony we were displaying.

Fun fact: Perth is sterile, boring, and over-regulated, compared to Singapore.

Melaka is an interesting little town, food is mind blowing, our hotel is a former dutch mansion in a Unesco World Hertitage area.

Take care, suckers!

The biggest negative about Singapore is their political system. Yes it works, but when you actually start reading about the stuff that goes on there, it's not cool, not cool at all. Saying that, for me personally, I know I could live exactly the kind of life I like in a place like Singapore. The biggest "problem" for me is that it's becoming quite an expensive city when compared to, say, Hong Kong which is a much better city imho.

I've had places refuse to slice some bread and stick it in the toaster because it wasn't breakfast time. Sure sometimes it may not be possible as it can throw off the kitchen staff (flexibility isn't abundant here) but that sort of reaction is just plain BS.
Giardinis is a dump anyway stuck in the 90's. That's why it's so popular with the locals. The crapaccino crowd love it.

Is Giardinis popular? Siennas, however, is packed all the time, unbelievably busy. I think that the rule of "if a restaurant that specialises in country X is full of people from Country X then it must be great and authentic" does not work for Italians.

Picking on poor old Anna Vietnemese again Sanj? It is hardly a stalwart of the main strip... just innoffensively doing its stuff on the fringes and not pretending otherwise.

I totally agree, we didn't realise what time it was. Although I don't recall breakfast times being explicitly stated on the menu, I was bleary eyed (swap meet morning!) and the waiter seemed keen to extract orders from us so we didn't spend too much time looking.

But yeah, we were happy to take a second look until a clear eye-roll and 'For fucks sake' was muttered as he turned to leave. We weren't too phased or offended, it was just like "Oh, I guess that's what they call shitty service! Should we just leave? Yeah, let's just leave."

It's a pity because the only other real option was 130, which appeared to have two staff members swamped with orders.

Wow, you got a booking this late? At the bar or dining room?

I am going Friday week. Even when I booked last week there were no bookings available between 7-9. Luckily I wanted a bit earlier. I suppose QI is a bit of an older crowd so Rockpool would be a popular pre-show dinner place.

Yeah restaurant, I hope.

Just had the most amazing soft shell steak tacos from this random place in the middle of nowhere in Brooklyn. Along a quiet street, through a Mexican deli and right out back there's a dining area filled with about 15 Mexicans, a few which are drunk singing along to some Mexican music. Tacos = $2 each with some amazing side sauces/salsas included.

going to a roving dinner tonight as part of beaufort st festival, should be fun.

starts at must, then merchant, raah and cantina

raah opens 28/10, menu available on website raah.com.au

i was somewhat hopeful until i read the second page where for the larger items they recommend 2 per person plus 1 or 2 sides.

by my calculation, CONSERVATIVELY, food will cost $76/head excluding booze, too expensive. the mezze type dishes seem to be quite well priced but they must be tiny

food tonight is $150 including booze, a bit expensive but hopefully worth it

personally im a fan of decadent days instead of just a singular dish

breakfast @ mrs s, snack of kransky with leek from dubrovnik, gnocchi lunch @ cantina and a cake for dessert, possibly the lumberjack @ mrs s if they have it (great cake but extremely filling)

all within 5 mins of your house

alternatively for a one stop indulgent meal i recommend the violin duck @ hong kong bbq, i had it yesterday (sorry matt).

get a half a duck with some dry noodles (or rice, i recommend the noodles), it will blow your mind. better than anything good fortune does, prepared a bit differently with amazing skin

well worth checking out kelli

staff are excellent, ive never had attitude there no matter how busy it is. there is a great vibe unlike say sayers where people get aggro waiting for seats

croque monsieur/madame, scrambled eggs, cornbread and rice pudding are worth having

rice pudding topping changes every so often, at the moment i think it is with caramelised pineapple and black pepper

some lunch items are pretty good too although ive only had lunch twice. had breakfast close to 20 times there i reckon since it is so close to my house. prob not the best food wise (although close to it) but for me the best overall package for breakfast in perth but i could be a bit biased since its my local

I cannot get enough of Jus Burgers.. been to the Northbridge and Leederville stores about 4 times in the past week/week and a half -.-

ive lost a bit of love for jus burgers, find it a bit inconsistent now and they ALWAYS overcook the patty. i used to get beautiful medium rare patties and now even if i say rare i get it medium well. for me if youre going to bend me over by charging $5 for a tiny amount of coleslaw and small chips the rest of the meal needs to be awesome

on the plus side though the staff are generally pretty good which is no mean feat considering hes got 4 outlets now

still tasty but not quite as good as when they started which is a shame. i find i now alternate between jus and burger bistro with occasionally doing grilld for the burger they do with harissa. jus still just about edges the other 2 imo but the miss saigon burger from BB is great too

had a burger from novembars last night. pretty good in an alfreds kitchen kinda way. $7.20 for a good sized cheeseburger

I can't tell whether I have a head cold with hayfever or just really bad hayfever.

It seems like there is a cold going around. People who work near me have had it over the last couple of weeks, so not surprised I finally had my turn. You are probably the same as me and had a rare combo. The hot day yesterday might have set off the pollen/grass seeds/whatever it is that causes me to sneeze.

Right time of the year for hay fever for me. But the combination with having a throat feel like it was sandpaper on Friday (no gay jokes people!) and the fluroscent phlem (yes - too much info) makes me think it was a combo. Sneezing continuously all day is so tiring and has made my neck hurt!

Anyway - hope that didn't put anyone off their food.

I'm in Penang still, heading to Bangkok tomorrow.

Food in Penang is spectacular, as always, and I have been hurting it.

Catfish Nasi Kandar for breakfast this morning at an old-school coffee shop, curry mee that came in two bowls for lunch (it was like eating two bowls of laksa, my head started hurting, also had a side of satay, and some Apom, some Rojak, and an Ais Kacang. No shit.

Heading out for famous Tandoori in a few minutes, and am actually contemplating going to two different joints tonight just to compare Tandoori's.
