samboy January 25th, 2010, 10:40 AM hahaha awesome. which restaurant was this?
yeah I can be an idiot ;) Mind you I was very subtle about it to make sure the other 2 tables didn't hear me. It was at Bliss Noodle Bar.
crave January 25th, 2010, 11:54 AM was trying a new rub for roast pork belly...
whipped up with szechuan roast pork w/ fluffed potato and asian greens...
szechuan peppercorn, five spice, salt rub on pork... fluffed potatoes w/ fine red onions, home-made mayo, shredded fresh basil... then just did up some asian greens w/ oyster sauce...
tha combo was heaven, was liberal with tha szechuan peppercorn and it came out really intense with tha creamy mash... but i fvckn messed up tha greens (i blame tha other half for distracting...)

The wait is over! Justin Kenny and Jonny Nease have opened their new joint venture, Elixir Coffee Specialists, at 145 Stirling Highway in Nedlands.
To tell you the truth, it’s all been a bit of a mystery. Over the last couple of months there have been a lot of whispers and gossip about when and where these guys were planning on re-emerging. JK and Jonny, affectionately known as ‘The Squeeze’, are well recognised for their work at Velvet Espresso in the Perth CBD. If you haven’t been there, Velvet is an absolute gem in the city. With Justin’s vision and Jonny’s attention to detail, they both became very well known for their serious coffee.
Over the years they continually tweaked and perfected their blend, style and speed – all the while maintaining extremely high standards. It’s really no surprise that at peak times they had (and continue to have) a line out the door. They have managed the impossible, getting notoriously rushed business people to slow down and smell the espresso! Obviously they are worth the wait, and it’s comforting to know that people see the value in a great coffee.
Even though they have been laying low lately, with the odd appearance here and there, JK and Jonny have been very busy behind the scenes, making sure every detail is accounted for in time for Elixir’s grand opening.
I’ve managed to catch up with them a couple of times prior to the opening for a sneak peek at their progress, and the fit looks sleek and funky. It’s got a bit of an industrial feel to it with its high ceilings, exposed beams and huge metal lamp shades. They have also gone for the awesome Tolix stools and chairs that are not only gorgeous and simplistic, but also surprisingly comfortable. Their baby blue cups are a bit of a showpiece, and have been selectively chosen for their size and coffee to milk ratio, coming all the way from Croatia.
As far as coffee goes, it will be nothing but the best from these guys. They are at the peak of the experience and know with confidence exactly what they want and how it will all work. Not to mention that they will own the very first 3 group Synesso Hydra in WA, complemented by two brand spanking new modified Roburs for their espresso and milk blends.
Give them a go and experience the coffee specialists for yourself, the official opening was this morning.

acc521 January 25th, 2010, 03:47 PM Sounds brilliant mate. The coffee scene in Perth has really matured in recent years.
BartBart January 25th, 2010, 03:54 PM  @ pic acc.
samboy January 25th, 2010, 04:09 PM Elixir definitely looks the part. Would have been great to have a late night coffee joint (7-4pm). I'm going on record as saying if their toast ($5.50) is tiny I'm blacklisting them regardless of how good the coffee/place is.
stadiumdesigner January 25th, 2010, 04:28 PM I'm going in to see the guys on weds and eat there...so maybe I'll post the first review. Pretty happy they snuck a picture of me in there on the Five Senses website talking to Jonny!
samboy January 25th, 2010, 04:32 PM do you know if they're open 2moro by any chance?
PS: that coffee machine gave me a hard on (sad)

 i was just wondering if the $4.80 muffins would be worth it...
2 peas in a pod we are samby.
having said that roast tomato and field mushroom bruschetta with wilted spinach for $12 sounds reasonable so maybe it will balance out the muffin.
ill definitely give this place a go

That is not true. I believe it was Sorrento's where I said the portion was huge ;)
The only people that could confirm I eat a lot is either Sanj or Gabs. However, on that night, the food was rather crap so I ate only a bit of it.
Meanwhile, has anyone been to the Subiaco Woolworths on a Sunday? The place is starved for a place that actually opens on Sunday. They officially open at 11am and boy, you should've seen the line waiting by 10.55am.
Absolutely ridiculous. 11am is way too late in the morning. Most people have already started on their day hours beforehand. GAH!
And how do people know I eat 14 weetbix for brekkie???

Sanj January 27th, 2010, 08:51 AM is that the one of me squinting or the one of my hands all over the place as i ranted?

acc521 January 27th, 2010, 08:53 AM Seriously Nate, I was looking in the mirror the other day and I am soooo much whiter than I have ever been before. This winter has managed to chip away at my beautiful olive complexion :(
Dunno when I'm coming back miensie. I def want to do another summer here and then it all depends on work. If I can find a job that I'm really happy with that I feel is going somewhere, I'll probably stay longer. If not, I'll probably head back around Oct/Nov. At the moment, my job is soooooooooooooo shite, but the economy here, while improved, is still pretty bad.

pasty fat bitch, if youre reading this - you need to remove that carrot from your anus. that is all

100% agree. I could make, I reckon, ragu for about, say, twenty people, it would cost less than a single meal at an italian restaurant, and be just as good.
also, thanks sanj, will check it out.

I just bastardised Sanj's recipe to show but you'll get the idea. Keep in mind this is the 'healthy' alternative which may not be exactly what you're looking for.
120 g pancetta cut into small pieces (I used shortcut bacon instead)
2 large cloves Garlic minced
3 tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Salt
2 Eggs (No eggs for me as I wanted to keep it light)
1/3 cup freshly grated Reggiano Parmigiano cheese or Pecorino Romano (Pecorino for me as I prefer the stronger flavor)
¼ cup finely chopped Flat-leaf parsley
500 g Spaghetti (Barilla Egg Pasta - Not bad for the price)
Freshly ground Black pepper
Carnation Evap reduced until the desired creaminess is reached
I also added finely sliced shitake (I love mushrooms in anything)
And some sundried tomatoes (again personal preference)
Sanj - I find myself using Carnation 98% evap in a lot of dishes and it's surprisingly good. I even used the coconut milk version in a curry. I'll be interested in your opinion though, as you know my taste buds are somewhat bland.

im not all that much of a food purist (eg ive got no issue if people like cheese on their seafood pasta) but if that is a carbonara ill bleach my anus and post pics of it on facebook. it looks like it could be pretty tasty though
edit - yeah will give it a go.i do think it would work quite well and is a bonus cos u can always have it in your pantry.

All I can say is, its not the most awesome thing on earth or anything like that, but it is a quality, independent retailer, currently with stores over East. There are kind-of similar stores in Perth, but not as good as this one, its a perfect fit for William Street, and they are a well established small business.

As for Prada, if it opens its said to be on the corner of King & Hay, opposite Gucci.
purple_orchid January 29th, 2010, 12:49 AM ^^Thanks for the pic jackso, are there any spaces next to apple or prada possibly for high-end retail? and is the prada space a heritage or new bld?
samboy January 29th, 2010, 01:02 AM Prada is not a new space but I don't know if the bldg is heritage. One wouldn't think so looking at it. There's spaces near Prada for other high end retail. In fact 2 along Hay st. One isn't for lease (been empty for years for some reason) and the other one next to it is. I'm pretty sure it's an old travel agency that closed down.
jackso January 29th, 2010, 01:52 AM If Prada does open (smeg?), along with Apple it will certainly lift the retail landscape of that section of Hay St and I wouldn't be suprised to see several current leases not being renewed.
miensie January 29th, 2010, 02:11 AM I haven't been down that section of Hay St for a good while now.
Is the Hans next to the newsagency still open?
We could get rid of that and replace it with something. Anything.
samboy January 29th, 2010, 02:17 AM nah mincy, hans/newsagency is part of the same development (both closed). Work started on both long time ago then stalled for a while then the windows got covered again with some black stuff presumably a sign that something is happening? but I haven't seen much
jackso January 29th, 2010, 02:19 AM Yeah Hans went long ago. That, along with the news agent is (from what we have heard) Prada's possible new home.
miensie January 29th, 2010, 02:21 AM nah mincy, hans/newsagency is part of the same development (both closed).
Hah really?
That's excellent news then.
I need to arrange a location for dinner next Saturday and I wanna try one of the places on my list. Am dying to go to Divido but I don't like their min. spend policy Friday/Saturday nights.
I'm sure there were some other places I've been meaning to go to. No pizza this time though guys.
Help?
samboy January 29th, 2010, 02:23 AM Carvers $15.95 buffet? Ok I'm being stupid, let me have a think. (I heard the buffet isn't bad for the price apparently)
miensie January 29th, 2010, 02:28 AM *twiddles thumbs*
:D
Sanj January 29th, 2010, 02:35 AM budget mincy? does ambience etc matter?
samboy January 29th, 2010, 02:35 AM Here's one for ya Mincy http://halu.net.au/ if you're up for Japanese with a little twist. I've been there twice and haven't been disappointed. Not too bad on the wallet either.
miensie January 29th, 2010, 02:39 AM budget mincy? does ambience etc matter?
Nothing too casual (so no Hawkers, Billy Lee etc) but nothing too fancy either (so no Jacksons or Perugino etc.) so somewhere in the middle. Would definitely like a place with a nice outdoor area so we can take advantage of the warmer weather.
Just as long as there's no min. spend, I'm fine.
Here's one for ya Mincy http://halu.net.au/ if you're up for Japanese with a little twist. I've been there twice and haven't been disappointed. Not too bad on the wallet either.
Haha good choice Samby.
However, I have been there :D loved it too.
Sanj January 29th, 2010, 02:48 AM ah ok that rules out the ethiopian place cos that is really casual. would suggest the prophet but no chance of getting in tomorrow night without a booking.
what about clarences? same owners at cantina and they have a nice outdoor area at the back where you can have a drink before or after the meal etc. i havent eaten there though so cant vouch for food
miensie January 29th, 2010, 02:52 AM This is for the following Saturday, Sanj, so the 6th of February. Could do The Prophet then.
I thought you weren't all too fussed with Cantina nowadays?
- EDIT -
Why do neither of them have a website?? Gah.
Sanj January 29th, 2010, 02:56 AM yeah i gave them a second go a while back and they arent nearly as c**ty. could be also cos the manager there now is an old mate. the problem is that they do make the best risotto in perth along with il lido so i tend to go back for that.
other options - what about duende or pata negra? or gypsy tapas? havent been to gypsy tapas but ive heards it's fun and the food pretty good.
can vouch for pata negra and duende though, food is pretty damn good at both of them.
there is also that italian place on beaufort st in inglewood, cant seem to remember their name at the moment. without a doubt the best gnocchi ive had in perth (yes u dont normally order gnocchi but ud be mad not to have it here). the only potential issue is that they have a small menu so i doubt u would have more than 1 or max 2 veg options per course, probably 1.
the prophet is good though, their beans are really tasty and both the fried cauliflowerr and eggplant with tahini sauce are really good entrees. bonus is that u would struggle to spend more than $30 per head. their lentils and rice is another very good vegetarian dish
miensie January 29th, 2010, 03:02 AM Pata Negra!
That was one of them.
Just had a look at the menu - how big are their 'The Earth' portions? Is it a tapas style establishment?
Sanj January 29th, 2010, 03:04 AM cant remember specifically the earth sizes but id say they are a touch bigger than normal tapas. we paid around $75 a head including 3 or 4 alcoholic drinks and 2 or 3 desserts (4 people).
miensie January 29th, 2010, 03:12 AM Ok, cool, thanks Sanj.
I've narrowed it down to The Prophet, Clarences and Pata Negra. If none of my friends are willing, we can always go to Galileo.
Thanks, I appreciate it :)
Sanj January 29th, 2010, 03:19 AM yeah id probably go to the prophet if i were you. lots of veg options, bloody tasty, affordable, something different
miensie January 29th, 2010, 03:22 AM I am leaning towards it, hence why it's first on the list :)
A popular place then if you need a booking? Smart casual?
samboy January 29th, 2010, 03:24 AM not the sort of place you need to be concerned with what you wear :) booking definitely.
GAbE27 January 29th, 2010, 03:25 AM ^^ how funny, I was just about to ask sanj if pata negra was any good cos wifey wants to go there for her bday.
So sanj what you reckon worth droppin a cnote in there or not?
miensie January 29th, 2010, 03:29 AM Thanks Samby :)
Gabs, it's not just Sanj who I've heard good things from about Pata Negra. Give it a shot.
I would too if The Prophet didn't sound so enticing.
GAbE27 January 29th, 2010, 03:33 AM D-U-N!! lookin it doooooooooown!
crave January 29th, 2010, 03:46 AM :(
my other half won't let me put a bar tab on my 30th... omg.
i feel nasty.
Sanj January 29th, 2010, 04:24 AM gabs - only been once to pata negra but had a good time. it's by no means perfect, the lamb with mahamara (or soemthing like that) was pretty tough, although the sauce was magnificent. another dish was average but the arroz negro was very good, as were a couple of others. the churros with pedro ximenez ice cream is certainly worth getting and was one of the highlights of the meal. ive also heard their fabada is very good but not sure if they'll have it on menu in height of summer.
it is also a touch overpriced but not sayers overpriced where u feel like someone has anally raped you.
not sure if you have been to movida but i wouldnt say it is as good as movida but it isnt all that far away. not as inventive as movida but still some very good dishes and a great selection of sherries as well.
samboy January 30th, 2010, 07:13 AM So I went to Elixir today.
1. Staff at counter very friendly and a 'Happy to be there' demeanour. (cute too)
2. Long Black - Hardly any crema, weak, not hot enough and somewhat sour. I found it to be nothing special (by comparison, Zekka (when jackson makes it) is much better and so is Velvet)
3. Toast (2 slices) + Jam ($5.50) - The bread was good BUT one slice was normal size but the other was the arse end less than half the normal size. If I ran a place and decided to serve not square loaves I'd be ditching the ends or use it for something else. Or just get square loaves that are nice and even.
4. The place was very busy and felt a bit cramped. Probably not their fault as there was one large family who had re-arranged the tables.
5. The food menu is quite limitted (essentially what you see in the pic on the board)
6. I peaked over to the other table at the $12 (toast+mushroom+roasted tomato+ spinach) and it looked ok but not something that would fill me up. Essentially one toast with a pile of spinach mostly.
Verdict - Meh.
Would I go back? No
Would they do well? Lots of Cayenne drivers in the neighbourhood that would keep this place very busy.
Citystyle January 30th, 2010, 10:02 AM ^^Thanks for the pic jackso, are there any spaces next to apple or prada possibly for high-end retail? and is the prada space a heritage or new bld?
That news agent was cool and was always packed.
Johnvb January 30th, 2010, 01:51 PM Nate I am guessing your store is American Apparel... PM me if I'm right ;)
purple_orchid January 30th, 2010, 09:02 PM ^^hope not. nate, is it a multi-brand store, maybe the corner shop?
purple_orchid January 31st, 2010, 12:44 AM Prada is not a new space but I don't know if the bldg is heritage. One wouldn't think so looking at it. There's spaces near Prada for other high end retail. In fact 2 along Hay st. One isn't for lease (been empty for years for some reason) and the other one next to it is. I'm pretty sure it's an old travel agency that closed down.
if it is a new bld, we might get a contemporary facade, prada uses Herzog & De Meuron and Rem Koolhaas, so it could be interesting. hope they will attract other high-end brands to open in that area.

city_thing January 31st, 2010, 08:03 AM A lot of places here smell like Malaysia, even though they're not seafood markets etc.
I can't believe you drove all the way out to Springvale just for the markets though

i wanted to take more photos, but i noticed people started looking... :>
tha drive was about 30mins, in which i kept thinking, god i hate suburban sprawl.
Kelli January 31st, 2010, 09:24 AM Thanks Crave, that is interesting, i love food markets. The Morley markets claim to be modeling themselves on a 'Melbourne market'. I have been wondering which one, i thought maybe South Melbourne, but the layout, content, style of that Springvale one looks more like it, hopefully it is on that scale...
jarkti January 31st, 2010, 09:26 AM Nate I am guessing your store is American Apparel... PM me if I'm right ;)

I hope your right!
acc521 January 31st, 2010, 12:22 PM Springvale was "interesting" when I went there. I thought I was in Vietnamfrica.
city_thing January 31st, 2010, 09:03 PM ^^ lol, why did you go there?
I can't imagine any tourist putting the Springvale Markets on their 'must see list'.
The Vic markets and South Melbourne markets are both pretty cool.
acc521 January 31st, 2010, 09:20 PM My old company's head office was there lol.
miensie February 1st, 2010, 02:37 AM I was actually going to ask whether it was American Apparel as I'd heard it was coming to Perth. However, I'd heard this sometime last year. The predicted location was Leederville, not Northbridge.
The Prophet is out as my best friend doesn't like Lebanese food
acc521 February 1st, 2010, 02:50 AM ^^You need to find a new best friend. What a loser. That's just inexcusable.
samboy February 1st, 2010, 02:52 AM Looks like Grill'd is opening in Mt Lawley sometime in March. I don't know exactly where but I suspect it's the old Cino to go or Red Rooster. Either way I'm looking forward to it.
acc521 February 1st, 2010, 02:54 AM That's brilliant news!

Sanj will just need to take me instead :D

miensie February 1st, 2010, 03:01 AM Tis a bit of a shame though as I was looking forward to it.
Not to worry as I'll get there sometime anyway.
Nate Von Longneck II February 1st, 2010, 03:37 AM Went to Hamburger Hill on Sat night.
Verdict : great! Hadn't been there for years, and the burger was really good. Nice size, very fresh, lightly toasted bun, and jail bars across the counter.
I would rate it higher than Flipside on Cambridge St, not quite as good as Jus or Alfreds.
Also, I have had the following Dim Sum in the last few weeks:
Dragon on James St - shit
Dragon on Francis - average
Northbridge Chinese on Roe - shit
Dim Sum Cafe - average
Some other place opposite Brass Monkey - slightly better than average, let down by too much MSG
Emma's in vic park - shit
I am about to give up on Dim Sum unless someone else can give me a good suggestion? (welcome inn is closed for another two weeks).
miensie February 1st, 2010, 03:39 AM I don't rate Flipside at all.
Wil give this Hamburger Hill a shot.
I'm so craving a sesame ball
acc521 February 1st, 2010, 03:41 AM I think Samboy is the only person who ever rated Flipside.

what about yu at burswood? ive heard it is overpriced but tasty. this is a while back though, dont know anyone who has been recently
there was apparently a good place in freo i heard about a couple of years ago, will try to remember the name. it might have been just outside main freo. also, dont bother with the place on canning hwy that heaps of people rate. pretty average.
acc - flipside isnt bad by any means, i just dont think theyre the best. if i want a big tasty greasy hamburger i go to alfreds but if i want a goremay one i go to jus.

Thanks sanj - I will look into Yu.
Mincy - I'm not too sure about vego options at Hamburger Hill... its just a plain ol' burger place, so you may struggle...

I still rate the burger with fwaa graa at Jus as the best burger I have ever had in Perth, and one of the best I have EVER eaten.
Alfreds is your good old fashioned honest burger.

seriously?

Very similar to my Mum's aversion to curry.

They might be new, I hadn't noticed them until recently. (edit - sanj is right, its Monster Burger... have you tried one sanj?)
acc - I have been thinking of some awesome burger ideas lately, by mixing various cuisines (Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese) in burger format. The duck one is excatly the sort of thing I think would be amazing. No, not thai "satay".
But, for example, maybe a thai green curry chicken in burger format... or a thai beef sald in burger format...
Anna at Flying Taco did some roast duck tacos last year, they were pretty damn good.
edit - acc, it must be gettin late for you! no work today?

Clockwise, from top left: Manna; Nasai Teriyaki; Teriyaki Bowl; and 5 Seasons Grill.
By JOHN T. EDGE
Published: January 5, 2010
SALAAMA, a Somali roadhouse near the airport here, serves chicken suqaar, a dish of griddled halal chicken, onions and peppers, popular with cab drivers. Interlopers to this clubhouse restaurant order the dish the way the menu advertises it — as chicken teriyaki.
At 5 Seasons Grill, a Vietnamese restaurant north of the city, a banner promises “The Best Teriyaki in Town.” That would be Item 38, com bo nuong, beef short ribs, marinated with lemon grass and other nontraditional teriyaki ingredients.
“This is just like teriyaki,” said Cat Vo, an owner. “Only it’s much better.”
In Seattle, teriyaki is omnipresent, the closest this city comes to a Chicago dog.
At Safeco Field, home of the Seattle Mariners, fans eat chicken teriyaki. Specialty food retailers stock teriyaki sauces, including a triple garlic take from Tom Douglas, perhaps Seattle’s most well-known chef.
Many Hawaiian restaurants serve a version. Some Thai restaurants do too. Tokyo Garden Teriyaki in the University District violates the dictates of traditional American and Japanese cookery with its corn dog teriyaki, a $5 gut punch of deep-fried corn dogs, sliced, tossed with wok-fried vegetables and drizzled with teriyaki sauce.
The Washington State Restaurant Association has identified 83 Seattle restaurants with teriyaki in their name, including I Love Teriyaki and I Luv Teriyaki. (A concurrent search yielded about 40 restaurants named Burger King, McDonald’s or Wendy’s.)
In Seattle, teriyaki is shorthand for a range of dishes, from teriyaki burgers, piled with chopped beef, to pineapple teriyaki, platters of chicken paved with canned pineapple.
The phenomenon, now in its fourth decade, has roots in Asian immigration. (For a 2007 Seattle Weekly article, Jonathan Kauffman wrote that Toshihiro Kasahara, a peripatetic Japanese-born restaurateur, may have popularized the teriyaki sauce style now standard in Seattle when he opened Toshi’s Teriyaki Restaurant in 1976.)
Teriyaki is derived from the Japanese root words teri, to shine, and yaki, to broil or grill. That’s the way traditional teriyaki looks: shiny and incised with grill marks. In Japan, teriyaki is a mix of soy sauce, sake and the rice wine mirin, which imparts a subtle sweetness.
In Seattle, subtlety gets short shrift. Cooks sweeten with white sugar and pineapple juice. They thicken with cornstarch and peanut butter. Ginger and garlic go into the mix, because of the Korean ancestry of many cooks.
Tokyo Garden’s owner, Sujan Shrestha, immigrated from Nepal 11 years ago to attend college. He stayed to help his brother run a company that imports dried cow’s milk and yak’s milk cheese for pet treats.
For Mr. Shrestha, opening a teriyaki shop was just another entrepreneurial tack. “In Seattle, they eat teriyaki,” he said. “It’s American, it’s cheap and it’s good. I’m a businessman; that’s enough for me.”
He serves Nepalese dumplings, known as momo, with a side of coleslaw, along with gyoza, Japanese dumplings. All are prepared under the direction of the sushi chef, José Ramirez, born in Puebla, Mexico.
That corn dog teriyaki is a stunner. But his signature dish is chicken teriyaki: butterflied boneless thighs, marinated in a soy-based sauce, then grilled, glazed with a thicker version of that sauce and sliced into strips.
“Chicken teriyaki is the best cheap food there is,” he said. “It’s ideal for international students. I got through school on oatmeal cookies and coffee. If only I could have had teriyaki, things would have been different.”
Seattle is not the sole American city that loves teriyaki.
Dozens of manufacturers market sauce riffs, like Veri Veri Teriyaki from Soy Vay Enterprises in Felton, Calif. Waba Grill Teriyaki House, which promotes skinless chicken, cooked without oil or MSG, has more than 20 California locations. Teriyaki Madness, based in Las Vegas (but owned by Seattle natives) is selling Nevada on teriyaki, pitched by an Elvis impersonator.
Only in Seattle, however, are teriyaki restaurants so ubiquitous that they’re virtually invisible, said Knute Berger, the author of “Pugetopolis,” a book of essays on modern Seattle mores.
“Seattle likes to talk about local foods, about ridiculous things like fiddlehead coulis,” Mr. Berger said. “Seattle yuppies love the idea of going to some obscure Chinese place for dim sum but won’t dare tell you that they eat chicken teriyaki. Those places are so much a part of the streetscape that we can’t even see them.”
Teriyaki claims its place at white tablecloth restaurants, too. Daniel’s Broiler, a steakhouse on Lake Union serves teriyaki-marinated beef as well as poached rock lobster tails.
But the average Seattle teriyaki spot is utilitarian, with fluorescent lights overhead and neon signs glaring from smudged storefront windows. The quality of ingredients is often measured by the salt water that packers inject into the restaurant’s chicken thighs. “We use a 2 percent chicken,” said Mr. Shrestha, decrying competitors who, in an effort to save money, buy chicken with much higher saline levels.
Economy is one of the virtues of Seattle teriyaki. It’s part of the problem, too. “Teriyaki is cheap and kind of dirty,” said Debbie Sarow, a bookstore owner who often eats a brown-bag lunch at her desk. “Everybody here is focused on what’s in their food, but teriyaki sauce is mysterious. You can’t figure out what’s in there, and that scares some people off.”
Boo Yul Ko and her husband, In Ja Ko, own Manna Deli & Teriyaki, cater-corner from the 5 Seasons Grill. She sells chicken, beef and pork teriyaki plates.
On the front counter, Ms. Ko stacks teriyaki wraps with the heft of lead piping. Engorged with meat, sauce, rice and salad — the constituent ingredients of a teriyaki plate — they rise in pyramids near a ceramic cat statuette, its paw raised in a gesture of welcome. She takes great pride in selling those wraps for $3.99, a price that first-generation immigrants (and college students) recognize as a bargain.
The Kos, Korean natives, moved to Seattle from Idaho in 1999, when their son, Sam Ko, enrolled in Seattle University as an undergraduate. (He went on to earn a dual M.D./M.B.A. degree from the University of Rochester.)
“Seattle has a thousand teriyakis,” Mrs. Ko said one afternoon. Her tone was dismissive, as if explaining the looming presence of the Space Needle to a not particularly bright child. “No Americans do the cooking. Koreans do.”
“This is Seattle food,” she said, extending her argument. “For Seattle people. This is what we eat here. Seattle people eat teriyaki. This isn’t Dallas.”
Nate Von Longneck II February 1st, 2010, 04:31 AM Bacon makes everything better.
We were at Hawkers recently, the kai lan in oyster sauce came out, we started eating. I was thinking - this is the best kail lan I have ever eaten. There were small little flakes on top, which I hadn't seen at other places. My vegetarian mate, who had just eaten a mouthful, said to me "you know what those flakes are - BACON". Man it made veges taste good!
Next time we went back, we asked Connie if we could have the veges without bacon. She said - "Bacon? There's no bacon on the veges?". She went and checked with the chef, who told her, yeah, he puts bacon on the veges.
Awesome.
Sanj February 1st, 2010, 04:38 AM hahaha i love it. i remember getting pork floss on a vege dish years ago and LOVING it.
havent been to hawkers in a while, due a trip there i think. connie is great as well. have you had the fuzhou tofu? their awesome homemeade tofu that is briefly deepfried and served with a pork mince cooked in some pork lard.
their cold tofu dish with pork mince is also very tasty
Nate Von Longneck II February 1st, 2010, 04:40 AM Haven't tried either sanj - will do.
Went last Friday night after DeVille's, took seven people along with me, Connie let us in as they were closing (it was about 1.30am), she's great!

samboy February 1st, 2010, 06:40 AM I think Samboy is the only person who ever rated Flipside.
I still stand by it though. Overall Jus rates higher but flipside has better buns (for my taste) and their meat patty eaten just by itself without any garnish etc is seasoned/spiced much better than Jus. Chicken hands down Jus is better.
Judging from the crowd the other night I don't think they care what we think anyway. The Stanley seems to be overflowing most nights which by the looks of it has created a huge customer base for flipside. The owners must be laughing all the way to the bank.

jackso February 1st, 2010, 06:47 AM I really need to try some of these asian dishes/places you guys keep talking about. Hawkers, Billy Lee's etc. Most of my friends are satisfied with a below par caesar or fast food.

I did once Sanj and I must admit it's not my thing. It felt more like a crowded pub without bogans (read western suburbs). Didn't have the feel of a relaxed/quaint lounge atmosphere which I tend to favour in my old age. The shopfront setup doesn't help it either. They encourage you to grab a burger and bring it over which is all well and good but finding a seat can also be a challenge.
Just my opinion though as they seem to be doing great business.
ryan79 February 1st, 2010, 02:55 PM ^^If you come to London I'll take you to Hache and you can order the duck burger. Soooooo good. It's what's best about a burger, plus what's best about Good Fortune, combined!
Haché Duck Burger:
AROMATIC CRISPY DUCK. Succulent, crispy Duck breast with Spring Onion, sliced Cucumber and Oriental Hoi Sin Sauce.
That really turns me on. Their whole menu does really.
Kelli February 1st, 2010, 05:55 PM Sanj, not one to be overly effusive but i finally had cake at Sherbert on the weekend and it was really quite special - the Plum and Almond cake. I made your Beth a little snippety though, by asking too many annoying questions maybe.

awesome, glad u enjoyed it. i definitely think summer is the right time for you cos they have a number of cakes with berries that will work well due to their tartness etc. they've got a bluebverry and polenta cake i want to try as well that'll probably be something you like. i have had the plum and almond cake and although i enjoyed it i wouldve loved it to be just a touch sweeter.
sherbet is one of the few places that will live up to the hype actually.unless they start cutting corners or expanding too fast i can only see it being as good going forward cos the main attractions (the cakes) are pre-made so mistakes can be remedied as opposed to stuff cooked to order.

Agreed.
I've come across men who aren't what you'd term 'handsome' or 'goodlooking' but were just very sexy. Charisma, confidence and charm has a lot to do with it. So I'm sure it works the same for girls.
I get AA are trying to be different and it probably works to some extent. I mean who could forget a poster like that one Nate posted, legs spread for the whole world to see. Barf.

miensie February 2nd, 2010, 07:28 AM Meanwhile, I'm going to Monster Burger today!! Will report back.
OK. I ordered the Falafel burger with chips and a coke. $14.
I was very hungry so I'm thinking that's why the first few bites really made me think, mmm wow, this is good! Afterwards, I ate a bit slower and noticed a few things I didn't like: bun was a bit soggy in places (but I did like the bun itself; could've just been toasted better), tomato was very floury and had a somewhat sour taste, needed more lettuce, falafel patty wasn't cooked properly I don't think. It was quite dry, was falling apart and didn't cover the whole bun. Patty itself was a decent size though, none of that crap flatness Flipside gave me.
They also gave me grilled eggplant free of charge which is apparently an extra.
The main distinguishing thing for me with Jus Burgers is their bun and the aioli/salad mix. They get it right 9/10 times and it's what makes the burger really tasty. This burger was lacking a bit in my opinion. Not too bad but not really that good either. Was a pretty decent size too.
Chips were approximately the same size portion as Jus Burgers but not crunchy. Could've been the paper bag it came in, I don't know.
The place itself is tiny and in a location you wouldn't really think to go down unless you know it's there. There's a kebab shop next door. Has a few outdoor tables but I walked into the kitchen thinking it was part of the eating area.
There was no one else there though but that area is pretty quiet.
Not sure if I'd go back. Maybe to try the haloumi burger.
Photos tomorrow.
jackso February 2nd, 2010, 07:33 AM Now youve got me thinking about burgers. When I think about burgers i think abut Jus. When i think about Jus I think about Jus Onion Rings, which means im going to have to go there soon.

miensie February 3rd, 2010, 05:04 AM Haha...I like Dilazzy so it's ok :)
You reckon the airport people will let me on the plane with a Jus Burger in my handbag? When you're not supposed to take outside food on board with you?
Sanj February 3rd, 2010, 05:10 AM not a problem but i wouldnt recommend it, the buns get really soggy after a while. the flipside burgers travel better but i suppose you arent a fan so doesnt really matter. u could maybe get them to put less relish etc on the bun?
miensie February 3rd, 2010, 05:13 AM But the relish is the best thing about the whole burger.
It'll still be better than anything they've got on offer, soggy or not.
Excellent. That's me sorted then :okay:

ask them to put the relish in a little container, like the one they put aioli in when u order the onion rings.
why are you taking a burger on flight to hong kong? surely u want to be hungry for when u land?
miensie February 3rd, 2010, 05:17 AM Hah! Even better!
Thanking you, Sank :)
Sanj February 3rd, 2010, 05:19 AM no worries. even vegetarians deserve to eat well.

Oh, Samby, that store next to Transit on Murray St? It was only temporary as it's now gone
samboy February 3rd, 2010, 05:45 AM mincy - Thank god for that it was horrid.
So checked out Monster Burger today. Just the basic chicken burger. The bun is identical to Jus although it was toasted really nicely which is rarely the case at Jus. Just enough to form a crispy layer on top and very soft in the middle. Salad was fine same as everywhere else and the chicken was ok. It didn't have the charred taste though as I suspect their grill is probably not the greatest.
All up I would say it was OK. I think they've taken a few tips from JUS re their presentation.
What I like about the place though is its location. On a nice day like today it's pretty good sitting outside in the laneway. We need more places like this to be busy (even if they're average). Also it's perfect that there's a mbike bay right next to it.
I was there for 30mins (12:00pm) and didn't see another person at either of the 2 shops (kebab next door which seems to be owned by the same people). I'm hoping I was just too early and may be they get busy at night.
Being a family/turkish joint I'm hoping they open quite late as well on some nights when you absolutely positively need to have a burger.
miensie February 3rd, 2010, 05:54 AM I actually don't think Jus Burgers do anything wrong with their buns although this could come down to our different tastes, Samby. You don't like the bun per se, amirite?
The one time I was not pleased was when they'd greased it really badly.
I think no one really knows they're there so that's why it's so quiet.
Burger itself was presented well, I give them that. Didn't taste that good though. I will go back for the haloumi burger though.
samboy February 3rd, 2010, 05:57 AM yeah cool mincy the haloumi should be very good if done right. You're right I'm not a huge fan of the doughy turkish bread which does get very soggy at Jus. This happens mostly with the chicken as they don't typically rest it that well. Also with the very high turnover at Just I don't think they have the time or space to really toast the buns whereas this joint I was the only one there.
...and grill'd seems to be taking up the R Rooster space in Mt Lawley. Fitout already started.
