I noted in one of the local rags that the Vic Park council has come out in support of local residents opposed to a plan to turn Carlisle IGA into a massive Dan Murphy's bottle shop.

Can anyone point me to some useful information on exactly whats going on? Does the council actually have any powers to reject the Woolworths proposal? If so does Woolworths have any avenues of appeal? And just how likely is it that Woolworths will actually get this done and take over the IGA? How likely is it that they would get a liquor license anyway? (if it was anyone other than Woolies or maybe Coles, I would say "not gonna happen due to the amount of existing bottle shops in the area" but Woolies and Coles didn't become the #1 and #2 liquor retailers in this country without knowing exactly what buttons to push at the various state licensing agencies to get what they want :)

AndyGM
June 12th, 2012, 03:07 AM
Councils can use all sorts of blocking powers to prevent a change of use like that. They can block planning approval for any works and signage for exampe.

Liquor licencing is different across states, but I know Woolworths and Coles have been struggling to get liquor licence approvals in some areas in other states (while non-Woolies and Coles entities have not had the same problems), therefore they have taken to buying other existing liquor retailers in order to utilise the licence for one of their stores.

It would be interesting to see what other Woolies liquor stores are in that area.

It would be interesting to see what other Woolies liquor stores are in that area.
Nearest outlets seem to be a BWS at Belmont & a BWS at Rivervale.
There has been comments/letters from some people suggesting that Woolies wants to open the Dan Murphy's not just to sell alcohol in that spot but also to get rid of a competitor (the IGA). Although given that Dan Murphy's and Woolworths Supermarkets are completly separate business units, I doubt that's the case :)

140s problem is that it's far away from the main office core, and the escalators should have gone directly into the food court, straight from the mall, with some signage to make people 100% sure where they are going. one40, while pretty is terribly designed from a retail perpsective.

For example it's not abundantly clear you can get to Wellington Street from Murray Street mall because the arcade curves around. That would stop a lot of people using it.

I was wandering around that area and even thru the GPO building as well, its not very inviting to the average punter.

Matt B
June 14th, 2012, 10:14 AM
Did you see inside the GPO they don;t even bother having "For Lease" signs up on the windows of all those empty tenancies.

Also - that Indian 'Curry Munchers' in 140W ain't all that bad, and it is very easy to get a seat. Given it has the whole place to itself it is pretty bloody busy too - nearly always a healthy queue.

Enex secured classy retail tenants and marketed heavily and well. 140W will be a good spot in 5-10 years - I think it will be a hive of indie shops with GPO a bit of a creative quarter both with a real youth and non-mainstream focus. Sure that is not great news for their efforts to make a killing in rents today.

Matt B
June 14th, 2012, 10:34 AM
It is part of their attempts to jazz the place up. It is a retro caravan coffee cart/cafe that most likely does do ice cream. Every outlet was vacant or heading that way so as documented by the UH they offered basement price rents to trendy William St businesses to set up effectively pop-up stores in 140W. Caravan is one of those.

Kelli I would recommend mini espresso in London Court - never ever had a bad coffee there. Big fan of their fruit toast too. After that I would recommend Standing Room Only in Piccadilly (no food shame, but very good looking staff) and Greenhouse (used to have awesome breakfast muffins but started to put wayyy too much salt on top). I also really rate Ristretto in Howard Street - if you can handle the drab decor. They do a killer lemon muffin as well. I would avoid Rosso Espresso and Parrot (burnt or watery). And if you are feeling cheap you can always have a free coffee at Nespresso.

I don't mind Milkd either. North Perth is equal. My sons swimming lessons are nearby on a Sunday morning and I used to pick up a Mocha and Bana bread (love their Banana bread) from Milkd in Maylands on the way through. Now his swimming starts earlier and I never have enough time :(

I've been to Soto twice. First time had an awesome breakfast and coffee. Went about 12 months later and the breakfast was miserable, like we were being rashioned in WW2 but coffee was still quite good.

Sunday trade likely by August
Gareth Parker, The West Australian
June 12, 2012, 6:19 am

Perth retailers have been urged to start preparing for citywide Sunday trading, which is likely to be introduced as soon as August.

Legislation to enable Sunday trading outside the existing special retail precincts of the inner city, Midland, Armadale, Joondalup and Fremantle is yet to pass State Parliament.

Legislation could be debated by the Upper House this week and Commerce Minister Simon O'Brien remains hopeful the Government's August start date for the new regime can be reached.

Retail Traders Association chief Wayne Spencer said that retailers needed to prepare now for the changes.

"If retailers outside the special trading precincts think they will just throw open the doors and see the customers flood in, I've got some sad news for them," Mr Spencer said.

"There will be an adjustment period and they need to do a lot of work now.

"It will take a while."

Mr O'Brien said the response to Sunday trading in the special trading precincts gave the Government confidence that citywide Sunday trade would be embraced by the community.

Went to Nahn Thai last night, I hadn't been since last year and was pleasantly surprised to see they've done a complete renovation and extended into the property next door. It was also the first time I've been on a weekend, which is when they have a banquet style set menu. I really enjoyed it, the soft shell crab was fantastic. About $75/4 people for 3 courses and a fair few drinks.

Nine Fine Food is still next door on the corner, but I noticed the store on the other side of Nahn Thai had a Liquor Licence application by them on the window. The shop looks too small for them to be planning a relocation, and it's also quite far away from their existing premises. Does anyone know what they're planning?

Innocent Bystander is privately owned by one of the guys who founded Little World. White Rabbit is owned by little world, so that goes to Lion along with Pipsqueak and Aspall.

There was this French one I used to get in London that was great, however I don't think it's available in Aus.

Dan Murphys has "Breton Cidre" for $3.90 a bottle. From the same region (Brittany) so might be alright?

Aspall is actually quite good, but I can't bring myself to pay $7.90 a bottle from Dan Murphys when it used to cost me less than half that in London.

I am assuming the glass elevator in that picture is roughly where Shake Shack now sits?

Someone really should do a "history of retailing in Perth" somewhere (covering the CBD and all its retail changes over the years and maybe the rise of the suburban shopping centers)
Would be interesting to see what Carousel used to look like before it doubled in size or what was there before Galleria opened...

I remember taking that elevator as a kid, to the point where my brother and I used to demand we were taken in the glass elevator whenever we were in the city.

I also remember Carousel a long time before the renovations. The cinema used to be located in a separate building from the main shopping centre and I remember going there to see Hot Shots as a kid, my brother saw Highlander II at the same time (obvioulsy we couldn't agree on a choice!)

I did some research... indeed it is the one where the sun is blocked out after a sheild designed to protect from sunlight due to ozone depletion turns the planet in to a perpetual state of night.

Further research tells me that there were subsequent directors and other cuts where they were no longer aliens, which would help. I mean look everyone being vampires was on for Dusk 'till Dawn... but then that's tarentino and it is not like it changed between movies.

I'm bored this evening so I thought I'd cover some of Morley ... :)

Before the Galleria there used to be a collection of separate mini-shopping centres and department stores. One of those centres, Morley Market still exists today. The Galleria merged most of these together into what was then an attractive design. When it opened it was way ahead of anything else in Perth during the early 1990s.

Parts of the galleria are much older than the rest, the Kmart used to be stand-alone and opened in the late 1960s. The Target and its surrounding shops used to belong to a stand alone Morley City shopping centre which opened during the early 70s. There used to be a Myer-like department store on the current Myer site that was built in 1961.

This separated, standalone layout for suburban shopping districts wasn't unique to Morley either, Innaloo, Midland Gate etc were designed in much the same way.

http://purl.slwa.wa.gov.au/slwa_b3048508_2.jpg
Kmart in the same building as today, except now instead of facing a road it faces shops within a mall. That cover walkway went to the old Morley bus station which was just a collection of covered stops.

In the old days K Mart Morley used to sell groceries as well as their variety items.

This is the old Morley City from 1975. This structure is still apart of The Galleria with Target occupying the same space and part of Woolworths occupying Walshs.

yeah yeah but my comment was in relation to unexpected/inexplicable changes to plot half way through, or in Highlander's case in between movies (they were NOT aliens in Highlander). A director could not throw in that sort of twist if it was not in the storyline/screenplay.

Thanks for the info on Morley.
How many other Super-K-Mart stores (with the supermarket section) existed in Perth? I think K-Mart/Coles Mirrabooka is one example that used to be a Super-K, where there any others?

I still remember when the K-Mart in Kardinia was a stand-alone store with a small building next to it holding a Coles and various specialty stores.

Were there any other suburban Boans stores?

Anyone got any other pictures of Perth shopping centers that predate the late-80s/early-90s renovation that many Perth centers underwent (Carousel, Galleria, Southlands, Garden City etc)

And yes I like Galleria and love the selection of shops they have (some people I know dont like it because of the multiple levels making it more confusing or harder to find what you want)

I disagree with that, good directors like Oliver stone and Quentin Tarantino add a lot to their movies. Maybe a director of a Jennifer Aniston movie would be a project co-ordinator as there is no creativity to begin with.

But of course the writers bring a lot creativity.

Natural Born Killers for example is a long way from the vision of Tarantino that he divorces himself for the project. Oliver Stone really put his own vision into the movie (which I love btw). My understanding was that Tarantino only wrote the first part of the movie but looks like I'm wrong. Either way it has Robert Roderiguez style all over it.

As I said earlier some other 3rd bloke wrote the story in the 1st place, not Tarantino nor Rodriguez. From what is available online it is not possible to determine who decided all the patrons of the tavern would become vampires, which was the point of my post. Could be any of them.

Both those dirctors are also the writers for their movies. which as u said is a lot different to the run of the mill director, who basically pull all the creative components together. Which is still no easy task.

For some reason I don't give a shit about this anymore (which is probably how it should be) after all the arguments.

Historic Sunday trading legislation passed

SUNDAY retail trading is now a reality in WA - with State Parliament passing legislation today to allow shops to open from 11am to 5pm.

The move is being hailed as historic for WA, with many retail and business groups arguing in favour of Sunday retail trading thanks to positive surveys on the issue.

While the legislation has passed, a start date for Sunday trading has yet to be announced, with Commerce Minister Simon O’Brien saying a formal implementation date would be announced in the coming weeks.

Many are tipping it to start in August.

Mr O’Brien said today the new laws would give the right to all general retail shops in the Perth metropolitan area, including supermarkets and department stores, to open from 11am to 5pm.

The special trading precincts of Perth, Midland, Fremantle, Armadale and Joondalup – where shops were allowed to open on Sundays – will be abolished to make way for the new regime, said Mr O’Brien.
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA said today will be remembered as "the day that Western Australia removed the shackles from retailers and consumers".

"The State’s peak business organisation, CCI, congratulates members of the WA Parliament for bringing Perth’s old fashioned and anti-competitive retail trading hours laws up to date," CCIWA chief executive James Pearson said.

"Allowing all shops to open on Sundays, all year round, will be a boost to retailers who have being doing it tough in recent times.

"This change will also help create more jobs for workers who want the flexibility of working on weekends, or existing employees looking for more work"

While the change is welcomed, Mr Pearson said the next step is to fully deregulate retail trading in the state and allow West Australians to shop when it suited them and allow shopkeepers the freedom to choose how best to meet their customers' needs.

Quite sad... bye bye family unit. Having lived in the eastern states all my life, parents, or even teenage kids are working Sundays, there goes the "family who play together stay together" idea. When I moved to WA two years ago, it was what I think set it apart from the rest of Australia, going out on a Sunday to parks, river, events, etc and seeing families together. Another day for most people to walk around the shops windowshopping, as they still don't have the disposable income to spend...

Yeah - agree about Chapel St. Not been there since Christmas I don't think. Smith St would be good for me. But not for my wasteline.

Having said that I still haven't been to Huxtaburger yet. Whenever I go past there are too many hipsters outside or I have already been tempted by somewhere else on Smith or Gertrude.

On a more WA related note - was back in the Westside the other week - had a meeting on what was the Queens Birthday in Vic, so went over on the Friday and went down to South West staying in Margaret River over the weekend(the weekend it blew a gale and it seemed like half the trees in the region were blown down across the roads). Went and had a meal at the Arc of Iris - always great food there and I would throughly recommend it to anyone. Then the next night I went to Winos. What. A. Rip. Off. :ohno: Tries to be tapasy small serves, but for extortionate prices. And not very impressive flavours. Left feeling hungry and had cheese on toast in the place I was staying before bed! most dishes are served as "meals"/comes with rice, but if you ask they can bring tha dishes on their own... so just ask for it without tha rice...

Huxtaburger is good, but not great. Beatbox Kitchen is my fave in Melb, and conveniently when I can't be arsed cooking dinner after a long day, the van is always around Brunswick :-)

Kelli one thing I have no idea about is CBD brekkies here unfortunately :-( Perhaps cafй vue on little Collins? I have had coffee, cakes and lunch there and it's always been top notch.

For cheap dinner, Shanghai Street Dumpling on little Bourke is brilliant.

I actually rarely eat out in the CBD.

We're staying in the CBD, so that's why I specified CBD, but anywhere central really. Staying on Collins Street, so both Rose Garden bbq and cafe vue would be very convenient, two of us need coffee toot sweet in the am! The other one is an annoying morning person.

You're all so kind, I've grown lazy, just ask here instead of bothering with doing any research myself, all sounds good, thanks. No pressure Ryan, but if you do find it that would be great too.

Strange the Vics don't have a food thread, the Sydney people just started one.

Anyway, since you're all here, do you have any tips for Melbourne CBD? Cheap dirty peasant food. And breakfasts!

Supper Inn on Celestial Lane in Chinatown is fantastic for a dirt cheap feast. They do amazing things with Asian vegetables there.

http://www.theage.com.au/news/restaurant-reviews/supper-inn/2007/01/05/1167777269820.html

Laksa King also has (in my opinion) the best laksa in the city. It's a little way out of the city, beside Newmarket station on the Cragieburn line, or on tram #57.

http://www.theage.com.au/entertainment/restaurants-and-bars/laksa-king-20100928-15umk.html

It's also a good idea to head to either Victoria street in North Richmond or Footscray. Both areas are hubs for the Vietnamese community and you really can't go wrong.

I ♥ Pho 264 is a great place. You can even buy a T-shirt saying "I ♥ Pho" there.

http://www.theage.com.au/entertainment/restaurants-and-bars/i-love-pho-264-20111203-1oc0k.html

You should also try MoVida Next Door for some simple tapas, and Maha if you feel like amazing Middle Eastern/Mediterranean food. They have this roast lamb dish that is just amazing.

Thanks city_thing, I have printed those off.

I love laksa, looking at the map I think that is the tram I used to get to my sisters place in Ascot Vale. Like the sound of the Supper Inn as well, the vegetables thing really does sound appealing considering I suspect meals are going to be starch laden with the other two being vegetarian.

Acc recommended Movida last time but I never got there.

I can't think which bit grosses you out :?. I think it is your delicate constitution.

This is a migrating discussion, a little trail of crumbs for anyone bored enough to follow it's meanderings backwards through the bowels of SSC WA.

All this pizza talk made me consider how to make a tofu pizza tonight. I used that fried tofu that is the dimension of a large piece of bread, toasted it crispy then put toppings on. Have to be creative with a low starch diet, it was actually good though. Only found one place in Perth that has has that tofu though, not sure why it's not more widespread. I think I'll have avocado, onion and tomato with lemon and S&P on a piece for breakfast tomorrow.

beef tagliata with carrot puree, potatoes and an awesome jus, i couldve bathed in it

Really!??! Or is that just a wish??

Yeah the rents will be high due to the amount of floorspace they take up but I am sure there are plenty of people who go there, and as far as I know Target have CBD stores in all the capital cities. Also - if we want to be attracting more people in the city we need this kind of store as those people shouldn't have to go to an out of town retail park to buy household goods etc.

Sanj
June 27th, 2012, 09:40 AM
i think part of the problem also is sourcing

a lot of restauranteurs go the easy option and pay a lot more when with a bit of creative thiinking/stingyness your money can go further

i recently helped a friend source a supplier for a particular ingredient at a 30% discount to what a number of top restaurants in perth are paying, despite him buying in smaller quantities

some of those prices in the article above are an example of that. the salmon is $5 for 150g, that works out to $33.33/kg which of course is completely over the top, especially wholesale. barramundi is also quoted as being $33 a kg, again i find that hard to believe

a box of lemons can range from $25-45 wholesale depending on where you get it from

it is a good article overall though

How do you get fresh protein as large discounts though? Dried or non perishables I can understand.

On that, I bought some muscles from the fish mongers at the boat shed last week. They were kind of vacuum packed alive in brine (how the hell you keep shellfish alive in a sealed bag is beyond me), from South Australia and a good price too /kg. But, they had a really odd texture about them and the flavour was very average, certainly not a patch on locally sourced even though they were cheaper.

I would argue that there is no way Zara would be able to sustain a store that big anywhere in Australia.

Target would have to be at least twice the size of the Bourke st store.

you buy from a producer or processor instead of wholesaler

you buy whole fillets and trim and portion yourself

you establish a relationship with people so they know to call you if they have excess of something in particular

plenty of ways for it to be done but it does require effort. like i said my friend is now paying 30% less than some very well known restaurants for product of the same quality. it can be done

there of course will be many times where you have to grin and bear it, im certainly not claiming it is possible for big savings all the time

Basement is their major stock storage. Nothing fancy just racks and shelves of stock. Plus some toilets and offices. It also has a truck turntable (truck drives in forward gets spun around, unloads and drives out forward).

Ground/first are retail.

Second is the main offices, lunch room, training rooms, toilets, plus some extra storage, mainly for the expensive items.

Third is the best floor. Half is the abandoned offices with falling down ceiling, funky smelling toilets, 90s catalogues and advertising signs, piles of wheelie chairs and accounting machines. The other half is plant rooms.

In recent years there have been, on average, 13 million annual individual visits to the centre, generating an estimated turnover of over A$500 million annually. In 2007, it grossed a Moving Annual Turnover of A$569.8 million giving it the highest turnover of any centre in the state and the 19th highest in the country. Under target building. Go down the lane next to McDonald's and there is a really steep ramp that leads into target basement. It's on the other side of the roller door inside the building.

Sunday trading to start on August 26
by: Political Editor Joe Spagnolo
From: The Sunday Times June 30, 2012 4:30PM

SUNDAY shopping begins in Perth on August 26 in a day labelled historic for WA.
The Sunday Times can reveal seven-day trading laws are just eight Sundays away, after the State Government locked in the final week of August as the date when new retail laws will come into force.

All general retail shops, including Coles, Woolworths, Myer and David Jones, will be able to open across metropolitan Perth from 11am to 5pm on Sundays and public holidays except for Christmas, Good Friday and Anzac Day.

Sunday "special trading precincts" at Armadale, Fremantle, Joondalup, Midland and Perth CBD will be scrapped as shops across the metropolitan area open. On weekdays, retailers will continue to open their doors until 9pm.

Retail groups yesterday welcomed the long-awaited start date, but called for laws to allow shops to open all day Sunday.

Commerce Minister Simon O'Brien yesterday said August 26 would mark the end of WA's "antiquated trading system".

"WA was an embarrassment and this is an historic moment for the residents of Perth and WA," he said.

"The ability for all metropolitan shops to access Sunday and public holiday trading from August 26 will create a fairer and more competitive market place that will be of enormous benefit to both consumers and the retail industry.

"Now families will finally have the choice of when and where to shop in Perth."

Retail Traders Association boss Wayne Spencer welcomed Sunday trading, but called for total deregulation, saying retailers should be able to choose when they wanted to open their doors and not be restricted to certain opening hours.

"Retailers need the freedom to restructure their opening hours to suit the consumers," he said.

Premier Colin Barnett hinted at more changes in the future, saying: "This is the next step in this government's incremental reform of retail trading hours, which started by extending weekday trading to 9pm and then by expanding the number of special trading precincts."

Shopping Centre Council of Australia executive director Milton Cockburn said his association had been ready to mount a legal challenge to WA's discriminatory trading laws in March this year, but had decided against it when the Liberal and Labor parties finally agreed to support Sunday trading throughout Perth.

Only the National Party opposed the move.

While the big retailers are celebrating, smaller shops with less than 18 employees that had a monopoly on Sunday shopping will now face stiff competition.

WA Independent Grocers Association president John Cummings said more retailers would be fighting for the same shopping spend.

Mr O'Brien said the August 26 start date had been chosen to ensure retailers had enough time to prepare. Retailers who want to remain closed are free to do so.

At that price point, you wont find a DSLR worth using (Even the entry level Canon DSLR costs somewhere near $500 for the body alone, let alone any lenses and accessories and stuff to go with it)

Best bet is to either save up some more and buy a proper DSLR or just buy a point & shoot. I recommend Canon, I have used Canon Point & Shoot cameras for years and I have family who swear by the Canon DSLRs and has used em to take some awesome shots.

I have a canon powershot s95 (which has since been superseded by the s100) - that was about $400 and is a point-and-shoot but has all the manual functions so you can use it like a dslr

I've got a 6 year old Canon Ixus that's still great that I use sometimes. Also has decent manual options considering its a relatively cheap P&S.

Crave - the s100 really is a great camera.

Don't get an SLR, do you want to be lugging that thing everywhere?

I think the idea of the SX130IS is great.

I once bought a Canon S2 IS and while it was a great camera it was always too big to be a point and shoot and too limited to be a DSLR replacement. It was always either too much or not enough!

The SX series appears to be the same sort of idea (good optics on basic camera) but the reduced size would make it much more convenient to use.

finally got to aisuru tonight... verdict: okay, but thumb-down. even tho it's okay, i don't think i've been disappointed in a long time...

tha fat-on-fat combo of waygu beef and cream cheese gave me a bit of a spark... thank god for fat.

Fat on fat is the best combo. Went to Bivouac last night and I wasn't really impressed either, I had pork belly with cabbage and apple salad, so fat but no fat on it. Should have been good, not sure what Sanj expects, it's not like I could justify complaining of anything, it was just underwhelming. It seems like one of those bland food places like Greenhouse, more for simple eaters who don't like strong flavours maybe.

Someone was commenting on it being broken before, but they've fixed the walkway on the state theatre, I love that building. It's even responding to you walking on it again. Wonder how it got broken? A bit of a problem if it keeps happening.

I really liked bivouac. I went with my wife and I was the only bloke there. We both noticed the high proportion of good looking women there. I agree with you Kelli, the food was good, but not memorable.
