ryan79 August 13th, 2012, 11:57 AM Most innovative?? WTF are they smoking. perthgazer August 13th, 2012, 12:02 PM There's a 'shop leased' sign on the old Herdsman at 140 store, same with the tenancy on the corner of Wellington and William. jonwil August 13th, 2012, 02:19 PM I think that with all the work on William Street done and with the ongoing works on Wellington Street forcing pedestrians (and cars to some extent) to the south side of the street, both those locations should get a lot of foot traffic now. Whether it translates into sales (and profits) depends on just who is taking those tenancies. GAbE27 August 14th, 2012, 03:20 AM To the NBA fans on this forum. I am running a fundraiser for my basketball social club and we have authentic NBA jerseys for sale from $65. Well overpriced. Import your sneakers instead. jarkti August 14th, 2012, 12:24 PM What's a good shoe site? For Lacoste ? I want these http://www.hypedc.com/arona-13-dark-brown.html Ari Gold August 14th, 2012, 12:29 PM It is expensive, maybe overpriced even. But for those of you who like to try on the shoes, go in the store for good service, etc, hype dc is very good. jarkti August 14th, 2012, 12:39 PM The ones that I want are $128, on the UK Lacoste website they are $138 Though on Hype they are on special down from $158 GAbE27 August 14th, 2012, 04:31 PM The ones that I want are $128, on the UK Lacoste website they are $138 Though on Hype they are on special down from $158 tell them that in the store. just cos thats the sticker price doesn't mean thats the price u need to pay.. would you ask for a better price on a TV or a car? Do it, you might be surprised :) as my grandma always said "a closed mouth never gets fed..." desperaterobots August 14th, 2012, 04:32 PM Hype was really fucking disappointing in terms of range. On the flipside, HAL maintain superiority. Hooray for HAL! c_avdas August 15th, 2012, 06:24 AM I find chatting to the person in the store for a few minutes almost always gets me a better price on stuff like shoes, even if I don't ask for one usually ends up costing me about the same as buying off the internet when you account for things like postage etc GAbE27 August 15th, 2012, 06:55 AM Hype was really fucking disappointing in terms of range. On the flipside, HAL maintain superiority. Hooray for HAL! like :okay: this guy knows whats up!! jarkti August 15th, 2012, 10:28 AM HAL are good. for Nikes and stuff But my shoes are Lacoste and Fred Perry all shoes like that acc521 August 15th, 2012, 11:36 AM Can't you get Fred Perry direct from the site? I've been buying my Fred Perry shoes from ASOS Only thought on looking on the Fred Perry website two days ago, ha jackso August 16th, 2012, 08:57 AM Here is a good defense of small bars by Dom Knight. http://www.dailylife.com.au/news-and-views/dl-opinion/in-defence-of-small-bars-20120718-22a7x.html acc521 August 16th, 2012, 10:49 AM Far too much commonsense in that article. Aerobat August 18th, 2012, 06:47 PM Been talked about before , but Jamie Oliver is confirmed to be opening his new store in 140 williams. JAMIE Oliver has chosen Perth to open his second Italian restaurant in Australia. After months of speculation, the king of "pukka tucker" has confirmed he will open Jamie's Italian at 140, on William St, early next year. The star who branded himself "The Naked Chef" will join the food revolution sweeping the city when he opens the local version of his popular Sydney diner. "Australia has always been close to my heart since I first visited around a decade ago and I had a brilliant time when I was there earlier this year for the launch of Jamie's Italian Sydney," Oliver said. "I get a lot of wonderful tweets from Australians who have eaten at Jamie's Italian restaurants in the UK, and now Sydney. "We've wanted to open in Perth for a while and now we've found the perfect location on William Street, right in the heart of the city." The restaurant will serve up fresh pasta daily, along with Oliver's signature planks of antipasto. He said the restaurant would have a strong focus on authentic Italian food. The celebrity chef has put out a casting call for 100 new staff to work at the Perth and Sydney restaurants. A spokeswoman for Cbus Property, the developer of 140, said the upmarket restaurant would be the first of many to take up leases at the development in the coming year. "Jamie's Italian will be the cornerstone of the new 140, forming part of an overall plan to transform the existing retail areas into a dynamic and vibrant urban eating environment," she said. http://www.perthnow.com.au/entertainment/perth-confidential/jamie-oliver-to-bring-pasta-and-italian-fare-to-140-on-william-st/story-e6frg30l-1226453344551 Aerobat August 18th, 2012, 06:48 PM http://www.perthnow.com.au/entertainment/perth-confidential/jamie-oliver-to-bring-pasta-and-italian-fare-to-140-on-william-st/story-e6frg30l-1226453344551 acc521 August 19th, 2012, 03:14 AM It was overpriced for what it was in London, but I suppose in Perth that means that it will be competitive with the rest of the options around town. Overall, definitely a great step for 140 and it will be a big drawcard for sure. Ktrain August 19th, 2012, 03:23 AM I ate at two different ones and I felt both were a good experience. Not high end food, but good portions & wines, solid service and always full so plenty of atmosphere. Will no doubt make a killing off the celeb factor. acc521 August 19th, 2012, 03:34 AM Oh for sure. Not the best Italian in the world, but as far as chains go it's more than adequate and, in my opinion, what a chain should be - not the best, but decent and consistent. WCG August 19th, 2012, 04:04 AM With Celebration Place or what ever its going to be called (hopefully not Prince Charles Square) and the whole CL its in a great location. ekul444 August 19th, 2012, 04:22 AM Just checked Jamie's website and it says 'The Mitchell Building' so where the Herdsman was. Nice spot. Let's hope this is just the beginning for 140. ryan79 August 19th, 2012, 05:51 AM Possitive move. Will be good now the William St road works have finished. jackso August 19th, 2012, 06:26 AM Smart move. The Mitchell Building already has a full kitchen installed I think. jarkti August 19th, 2012, 06:47 AM It was weird seeing William street fully open, it looks good :) jackso August 19th, 2012, 03:33 PM This is the Sydney Jamies Italian. Hopefully we get something as high quality. http://architectureau.com/articles/jamies-italian/#img=0 Dilaz89 August 19th, 2012, 03:51 PM Jamies italian is one of my favourite restaurants here. Fairly basic food but quite well done and reasonably priced for what it is. Ipggi August 20th, 2012, 12:40 AM I've heard mix reviews for the Sydney one .. friends say the food it's okay but nothing to write home about. Or more importantly not worth queuing for, as will probably be the case because they do not take bookings for tables less than 6. This is the food menu .. http://www.jamieoliver.com/au/italian/pdf/sydney-italian-2012-menu.pdf $15-26 pasta. mid-high $20s for most of the mains. perthgazer August 20th, 2012, 02:53 AM Jamies italian is one of my favourite restaurants here. Fairly basic food but quite well done and reasonably priced for what it is. I really enjoyed going to the Dubai one with you - i think they willl do really well here. The CBD seems to have a lot of really expensive restaurants plus lots of food courts and not much in between. crave August 20th, 2012, 04:29 AM i hope jamie comes to perth to open it... i want him to "shut down" tha entire cbd... paralysis! i want single mum's wid dawtahs in prams spilling onto william street and causing traffic chaos! traffic chaos banking up all tha way down to south perth! GAbE27 August 20th, 2012, 05:42 AM i hope jamie comes to perth to open it... i want him to "shut down" tha entire cbd... paralysis! i want single mum's wid dawtahs in prams spilling onto william street and causing traffic chaos! traffic chaos banking up all tha way down to south perth! So specific!! acc521 August 20th, 2012, 08:17 AM Finally tried Salsas today. Had the chicken burrito. I was expecting it to be ordinary but my god it was beyond bad! There was nothing remotely Mexican or Tex Mex about it, it was sweet, the rice was overcooked, the ingredients stale and the tortilla exceptionally doughy. Just awful. It was consistently busy, and how that is so, and how it keeps expanding is truly beyond me. Sanj August 20th, 2012, 08:21 AM that reminds me, have i mentioned casa mexicana on lake st? only mexican joint in perth actually owned by mexicans, one is quite an accomplished chef too who used to work in kitchen at amuse and star anise as well as FOH at la cholita only been once for a quick snack but it was pretty good. worth checking out Ultimate Hater August 20th, 2012, 08:41 AM Acc - you reminded me, I tried Zambrero's in ML before I left - holy shit, that's the worst meal I've had in a long time. I give em six months. Sank - good news, are they targeting similar markets to La Chol and the other one? Ultimate Hater August 20th, 2012, 08:42 AM Zambreros: "Corn salsa" = bits of corn. "Tomato salsa" = bits of tomato. True story. Sanj August 20th, 2012, 08:46 AM prob targeting a less hipster crowd to be honest. very simple fitout, it is in those 2 shops near re store that h ave been empty for 5 or 6 years. theyve also imported a fairly big tortilla press from mexico and plan to retail as well as wholesale fresh tortillas pretty good idea imo, margins should be pretty good for what is essentially flour and water or masa and water Sanj August 20th, 2012, 08:49 AM worst thing about zambrero is how much different shit they put in, reminds me of pizzas youd have in high school when you had the munchies beans, meat, corn salsa, onions, tomato salsa, cheese, sour cream, avocado, sauce Ultimate Hater August 20th, 2012, 08:53 AM prob targeting a less hipster crowd to be honest. That's a good thing! tbor August 20th, 2012, 08:59 AM The other one being El Publico? Sanj - isn't the Flying Taco owned/run by a Mexican bloke? Sanj August 20th, 2012, 09:01 AM nope whitey american woman with a love of mexican food, anna yeah el publico and la cholita samboy August 20th, 2012, 09:02 AM Zambrero is CONSISTENTLY SHITE Salsas ranges from VILE to AVERAGE depending on where you get it from. I've had a half decent chicken burrito in Morley/Chatswood but a disgusting one at Carillon. Someone recommended Guzman y Gomez (pork) which I haven't tried yet. She's from LA so I'm assuming she knows a little bit about mexican.... or may be not. crave August 20th, 2012, 09:14 AM if anyone is ever at tha old midland junction... i highly recommend that fish & chips shop... omg. i haven't been excited in fish & chips for ages... it's restored my belief that perth is king for fish and chips... no skimping! crispy crispy chips! massive single portions! opened mon-fri 4.30-7.30/8pm... i had tha seafood basket - massive fish, 6 squid rings, 2 prawns, 2 giant plump mussels (sickly massive, no doubt resembled eating out something else. yuck)... owned by japanese guy... he looks jap. :p jackso August 20th, 2012, 09:20 AM I've been told about Guzman y Gomez too. Are they open in Perth yet? jackso August 20th, 2012, 09:23 AM I've only been a couple of times, but I for a fast food type place I was pretty happy with Mad Mex. Plenty of choices, could be a little more generous with fillings. eco186 August 20th, 2012, 09:23 AM Website says no. acc521 August 20th, 2012, 09:24 AM I must admit, Mad Mex was like the top street vendor in Mexico City compared to Salsas. jackso August 20th, 2012, 09:25 AM Just checked. There was a DA last week for Guzman E Gomez at 87 James Street, Northbridge. ..adam August 20th, 2012, 09:26 AM I've always thought the Salsa's in Morley is okay, though I'm more a fan of the seasoning they use on the chips than anything. It's decent food court food. acc521 August 20th, 2012, 09:34 AM Perhaps the quality varies by outlet (as Samboy suggested). The one I had was seriously bad. I could feel it sitting uncomfortably in my stomach for hours. So "gluggy". GAbE27 August 20th, 2012, 10:20 AM Zambreros: "Corn salsa" = bits of corn. "Tomato salsa" = bits of tomato. True story. I almost ate there yesterday when in Mt Lawley... Lucky i didnt aye!!? had jus burgers in NB instead... which was also kinda disappointing!! jackso August 20th, 2012, 10:24 AM Flipside should be open in NB soon, another burger option! In the next couple of weeks I think, as well as Mechanics Institute. perthgazer August 20th, 2012, 10:36 AM Has anyone tried the maccas lamb burger? I found it to be absolutely gross. steve_87 August 20th, 2012, 11:13 AM I almost ate there yesterday when in Mt Lawley... Lucky i didnt aye!!? had jus burgers in NB instead... which was also kinda disappointing!! I had a burger from jus yesterday also. Was also underwhelmed. The onion rings were good though. acc521 August 20th, 2012, 11:23 AM Still need to get around to trying the one in Melbourne. I walk past it every Friday night - problem is, I generally have new places to try on a Friday! Ultimate Hater August 20th, 2012, 11:41 AM ha! just saw the lamb burger advertised over here - thought it must have been an NZ thing. ya know, sheep and all. Fish and Chips over here are incredible, and you wouldn't pay much more than about $10 AUD or so for two people. I paid about $15 today for two, but it was at a "fancy" place in Queenstown (tourist prices). Guzman - if that's the one on Crown St in Surry Hills, I've had it a couple-o times, and it was good. Flying Taco - Anna is from LA, which is pretty much Mexico. acc521 August 20th, 2012, 11:50 AM I believe it's pronounced "Fush and Chups". Re Mexico, spurred on by watching Breaking Bad, I started doing some more in depth research into the border states in the USA. I always knew it was fluid down there as regards the history but never knew just how easily a lot of that area could have been part of Mexico, and just how Spanish influenced some of those areas are. I mean look at this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Paso–Juárez Absolutely fascinating, a metro area so large and integrated that borders two quite different countries. Of course it happens all over Europe, but not to this size! Which also led me to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit–Windsor which is also fascinating. Anyway, I digress! I cannot wait until my honeymoon next year. 4/5 weeks in California, Mexico and Cuba! Ultimate Hater August 20th, 2012, 11:52 AM The only place I have been to in Mexico is Juarez. EASILY the most dangerous place I have ever visited in my entire life. Honeymoon trip sounds awesome, don't go to Juarez. Or El Paso for that matter. acc521 August 20th, 2012, 11:55 AM Yeah I've heard. Actually considered by many to be the most dangerous city in the world at the moment. Pretty much the consensus seems to be to avoid cities on the border. It's really out of control at the moment. perthgazer August 20th, 2012, 12:50 PM Best mexican food I have ever had was in Houston. delicious, everything mexican has tasted quite bland over here since then. acc521 August 20th, 2012, 12:54 PM I've been making my own Mexican food at home lately, trying a few things out of this book I got recently: http://www.amazon.com/The-Mexican-Cooking-Diana-Kennedy/dp/0553057065 http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2003/oct/12/foodanddrink.features6 Absolutely amazing stuff, and most of it is so simple. It's amazing how people can fuck it up constantly in the pursuit of modifying it to "local" tastes. Just cook the real stuff. It's simple and tastes great! jonwil August 21st, 2012, 05:20 AM The problem I have with many Mexican cookbooks including this one which I bought: http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CEoQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FMexican-Healthy-Ways-Favorite-Cuisine%2Fdp%2F1843092514&ei=H_syUJbcE8mTiQeSxIDYCg&usg=AFQjCNHBHjzyjEdWD0W6Z6j7OqVt3b6eaw is that they seem to be written for an American audience and assume access to things that are unavailable/hard to find in this country (or really expensive) For example, some of the interesting-looking recipes in the book I have require ingredients I haven't found anywhere locally: Masa Harina Plantains Tequila (I know its not hard to find but I bet it would be quite expensive to buy just for cooking with given that I dont drink alcohol) Chipotle chiles specific chiles more generally (its hard to know which ones to buy when Woolworths just labels them "Chilli green" or whatever) Sanj August 21st, 2012, 05:50 AM Apart from plantains I have bought everything in the above list in perth. There are also numerous aussie based online stores that ship to perth U can't expect to go to woolworths to find mexican chillies GAbE27 August 21st, 2012, 07:12 AM I believe it's pronounced "Fush and Chups". I also ate cat while i was there. which tastes a lot like rabbit. acc521 August 21st, 2012, 07:48 AM Cuba is going to be all types of awesome. I'll be happy to survive on Cube libres and cigars :) acc521 August 21st, 2012, 07:49 AM jonwil, often if you do a google search you can find adequate replacements for the more specific ingredients which you can get from your usual supermarket. Regarding the Chillis, yeah you have to look around - my local F&V store caters to Indians and Middle Eastern immigrants so I'm lucky in the Chilli department. If you're really struggling, you can always use hot red chillis from Coles/Woolies in place of a specific one. I tend to use Cayenne peppers as my standard hot red chilli. jonwil August 21st, 2012, 08:43 AM Apart from plantains I have bought everything in the above list in perth. There are also numerous aussie based online stores that ship to perth U can't expect to go to woolworths to find mexican chillies Can you recommend a shop (or shops) in Perth that has the Masa Harina and the chillies? Willing to go pretty much anywhere in the metro area but would prefer somewhere in the inner or south eastern suburbs. Wanna try making something a bit closer to REAL Mexican than what comes in the yellow boxes marked "Old El Paso" :) Also is a Tortilla Press worth the investment or not (and if it is, where can I find one?) I tried Google but all I got was older results that may not apply anymore. jackso August 21st, 2012, 09:04 AM Ok so since being in Italy I have been craving some proper fruit gelato/sorbet etc. Where is everyones favourite? Sanj August 21st, 2012, 09:07 AM Masa - all the kakulas etc type stores will have it, probably angry almond, loose produce as well. Not all that rare. Spanish flavours, grocer and boatshed will have too Chillies - spanish flavours, the grocer, I think a shop at freo markets, possibly one of the coventry stores Tortilla press, just get it online. If you get it here it'll be a fortune imo acc521 August 21st, 2012, 09:19 AM The gelato from this place was beyond unbelievable. http://www.ilgelatodisancrispino.it/ Miles ahead of the second best gelato I've ever had. I just think about it at random times and (although I love Rome for many reasons), would go back to Rome even if it was a shit city just to eat it. acc521 August 21st, 2012, 09:38 AM De Niro and Packer defeat eats from Armadale August 21, 2012 - 1:27PM Jenna Clarke Last night Armadale took on Robert De Niro and shopping centre coffee was celebrated. For the 2012 Restaurant and Catering Awards for Excellence local Asian take away favourite Hans Cafe was pitted against fine dining super power Nobu for the title of Perth’s best Asian Restaurant. The Coffee Club in Midland was a finalist in the Best Coffee Shop category and Hog’s Breath Cafe in Kelmscott and Mindarie were recognised as some of the best family restaurants Perth has to offer. Sizzler in Innaloo was notably absent from the finalists list which boasted 173 dining establishments and catering companies from around WA. "The Restaurant and Catering Awards have never been more important than they are in today's market. As an industry from many diverse backgrounds, dreams and ideals, we have to have one goal to provide better food, service and hospitality than we did yesterday," Restaurant and Catering Western Australia president Warwick Lewis said ahead of the gala awards. Other eateries to make the finalist list included iconic venues such as Fraser's Restaurant and Witch's Cauldron and canapé connoisseurs Mustard Catering. Winners were decided upon by "mystery diners" – a team of trained and independent judges who anonymously visited each of the restaurants and scored each venue on the "entire dining experience". The judging system consisted of 66 criteria for fine dining establishments and 55 criteria for more relaxed restaurants. The judging criteria and parameters of success were finalised after comprehensive surveys were carried out with Perth diners. Phone manner, table presentation, lighting, drinks and the dishes were all considered. Stephen Clarke of Clarke's of North Beach took out Chef of the Year while what was once Alan Bond and co's favourite place for a power lunch - Mosman's Restaurant - were awarded the George Mure Memorial for professional development. Chris Taylor from Fraser's was awarded the prestigious Hall of Fame Award and the Witch's Cauldron received a lifetime achievement award. http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/de-niro-and-packer-defeat-eats-from-armadale-20120821-24jzn.html?rand=1345527025929 Bahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Bullswool August 21st, 2012, 09:44 AM My favorite Gelato was in a little sidestreet shop in Florence. The second best Gelato I have ever tried, and despite becoming a chain now they still have maintained their quality. jackso August 21st, 2012, 10:34 AM The best I had was a great little place just off Campo San Margherita. It was beautiful, the guy made it in store and you could taste the fresh fruit in it. I also find myself thinking about it at random times. More importantly, is there anywhere you can get decent , fresh gelato in Perth? Sanj August 21st, 2012, 10:44 AM nowhere amazing that i know of, the gelato chains are ok i guess - il gelato, gelato amico etc 2 people are making paleta in perth from fresh fruit etc although i havent tried them. one is la paleta, check them out on FB. i believe they do alcoholic versions for functions too kinda like sorbet (with the fresh fruit etc) although obviously not churned so texture will be different jackso August 21st, 2012, 10:51 AM Will check them out. Can't decide the best place I have been, but it is probably a little place my wife and I found in Verona near the Roman amphitheatre. Sanj August 22nd, 2012, 06:45 AM the exact cake isnt on her FB page but elements of it is. i have more or less decided on a layered chocolate and hazelnut cake (flourless with hazelnut meal) filled with homemade nutella, with a bit of dark choc ganache and milk choc italian meringue buttercream ruffles. have also told her to go nuts on the decorations as i want a visually stunning cake. the only change i might make is to change the ruffles to a vanilla one for more contrast. my meal is substantial but fairly light so i thought i would go a somewhat rich cake as an option. i am still considering changing to a choclate and raspberry though as there is going to be lots of booze beforehand so not sure if a rich cake will work. i do really love the look of this cake as well, these are the ruffles im talking about http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/534965_370432989663504_826567240_n.jpg this is another one im considering - a 3 layer choc velvet cake (basically a red velvet without the food colouring) with dark choc ganache and vanilla meringe buttercream http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/311937_269874389719365_603772756_n.jpg if there wasnt going to be lots of food and alcohol beforehand this is what the cake would have been - layers of choc mud filled with salted caramel, peanut butter buttercream & smashed chocolate covered scorched peanuts. inside and outside shots (AMAZING) http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/298287_265706093469528_1404821485_n.jpg http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/300861_265617626811708_825557548_n.jpg Sanj August 22nd, 2012, 06:46 AM sorry about the large pics, took em straight off facebook acc521 August 22nd, 2012, 06:58 AM That last one sounds especially obscenely awesome. Given that I wont be eating Mexican of any sort more than once per fortnight at the most, I cant see it being worth paying the $ for a big piece of metal if its not going to give me results that are better than I could get with a cheap rolling pin from K-Mart or Big W. acc521 August 22nd, 2012, 03:19 PM I don't have one. The new laws will transform the way families spend their leisure time and inject an extra $1 billion into retail spending in the next 12 months, according to the Retail Traders Association. Premier Colin Barnett hailed it a "coming of age" for Perth. "We are behind the other states and cities in Australia, we're behind the world and we've caught up," he said. "There's no doubt that Sunday will be the biggest shopping day of the week and will change the lifestyle of West Australians for the better." But the Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA, while welcoming Sunday trading, will launch a fresh battle with the Government today when it begins a campaign for total deregulation of shopping hours. "It's been literally decades since (we) started campaigning to bring choice to retailers and shoppers. Finally the state's politicians have seen sense. Finally they're allowing some of the shackles off," CCI chief executive James Pearson said. "Now we need to take the next step and that is to fully deregulate trading and remove the silly restrictions that stop people buying a washing machine after 5pm when they can still buy a power tool. "Consumers should be able to buy whatever they want whenever they want and retailers should be able to choose to open when their customers find it most convenient." All general retailers, including Coles, Woolworths, Myer and David Jones, can open across metropolitan Perth from 11am to 5pm on Sundays and most public holidays. Mr Barnett admitted there were "anomalies in the system" such as hardware stores, including Bunnings, allowed to open earlier but said his Government would work with retailers to "sort those out". However, he did not support full deregulation. "I think the demand was for weeknight shopping and Sunday shopping. I think it's a good balance that way and I think this meets the needs of Perth for many years to come," Mr Barnett said. Opposition Leader Mark McGowan said he too wanted incremental reform, but not total deregulation. Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show WA retail trade grew 20 per cent last financial year as shoppers spent $29.7 billion. Topshop last week revealed it would lead the charge of high-end fashion retailers opening Perth stores to capitalise on the booming local economy and Sunday trading. The new laws are tipped to create up to 2000 new jobs across Perth, the WA Retail Traders Association said, with Woolworths expecting to hire about 600 more workers in its 55 metropolitan stores. Restaurants and cafes are also preparing for a wave of customers hungry to take advantage of extended Sunday shopping hours, while many of the state's 12,700 small businesses would embrace Sunday trading, according to the Small Business Commissioner. Mr Barnett urged shoppers to spend up today. "Be part of the first day of Sunday trading," he said. "Go out, enjoy the day, spend some money." jarkti August 26th, 2012, 03:39 AM Topshop is high end? Reglardless of quality, I order from Topman a lot so it'll be nice to try stuff on. Condensed milk is awesomen in cafe sua da, masala tea, making a dulce de leche etc I've always got some in the pantry Btw scm works with masala tea as a thickener as well and is often used along with regular milk as you cook it on the stove with spices etc. Wouldn't use it with regular tea ryan79 August 31st, 2012, 10:39 AM Have go with sanj on this one, tinned spag is disgusting. acc521 August 31st, 2012, 11:04 AM Tinned baked beans on the other hand :-) Matt B August 31st, 2012, 05:22 PM tinned baked beans are definitely superior to tinned spag. Kelli September 1st, 2012, 03:34 AM I think both are improved by cheddar stirred through at the very end. They put way too much sugar in them now though, can't eat it. Not sure why that changed, I suspect Americanisation. samboy September 1st, 2012, 03:53 AM The sauces are equally disgusting (sugary). If I'm desperate I generally rinse it out and stir in a can of tomatoes and some spices. Making your own baked beans (from canned beans) takes very little effort and tastes far better. Although most people are too time starved (lazy) to do it. acc521 September 1st, 2012, 03:58 AM I like the tinned beans on buttered toast. It's one of those guilty pleasures where even though it's not actually any good quality/health wise it just hits the spot sometimes. Urbicus September 1st, 2012, 05:02 AM I like the tinned beans on buttered toast. It's one of those guilty pleasures where even though it's not actually any good quality/health wise it just hits the spot sometimes. Wat. Get rid of the butter and keep the amount of beans low and you've got a perfectly healthy breakfast. High fibre, low calorie. Just make sure you choose brands that are low in saturated fat and sugar. acc521 September 1st, 2012, 05:07 AM Loads of sugar and salt though. It's gotta be Heinz. eco186 September 1st, 2012, 09:26 AM Noticed in the paper today that the IGA at canning bridge is looking to trial 24/7 trading starting Dec 1st. jonwil September 1st, 2012, 11:30 AM Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the recommendations re Mexican ingredients. Went to the Spanish place on Oxford St, they didn't have any of the ingredients on my list. They did have a Tortilla Press though (but at almost $50 its not worth buying unless you would use it all the time :) Ended up finding the Masa at Kakulas in Northbridge (awesome shop BTW). Didn't have the time to go looking for proper fresh chiles, ended up with some generic "Green" ones from Woolies :) Thanks again for the recommendations and tips, now I just need to put it all together and make some tacos :) acc521 September 1st, 2012, 12:44 PM Enjoy the cooking (and eating!) :-) Youngplanner September 1st, 2012, 01:05 PM Karl O'callaghan's little rant on alcohol consumption from 7:30 WA. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-08-31/commissioner-calls-for-the-community-to-shift/4237476 acc521 September 1st, 2012, 01:15 PM Cultural change will not be effected by legislation. ryan79 September 1st, 2012, 01:22 PM So much bullshit in that story. I think he's so old he's forgotten what its like to be young. While admit there is problem with violence in our community it goes a lot deeper than alcohol. And theres still no mention of actually dealing with the people who actually cause the trouble. Its all about making it harder for people to enjoy themselves. ryan79 September 1st, 2012, 01:24 PM The harder they try to legislate this the worse it will get. Your everyday person will just give up going out and only the scumbag cunts who look for trouble left. jonwil September 1st, 2012, 04:13 PM Attempt at Mexican food was a bit of a bust. Tortillas were a total failure (couldn't get the right mix of Masa and water) and the rest of the stuff (mixture of shredded beef, guacamole and salsa) ended up having too much lime juice, chilli juice or both. (not to mention that biting into even a small solid lump of garlic is not a good thing) Any good taco recipes or tips on how to get things better next time would be very much appreciated. desperaterobots September 1st, 2012, 10:48 PM http://www.purlbar.com.au/images/special1.jpg Perth. jackso September 2nd, 2012, 02:35 PM Bought and cooked one of those fresh ducks you mentioned Sanj. Beautiful. perthgazer September 4th, 2012, 03:48 AM Apple Store Garden City opening this Saturday @ 10am http://www.apple.com/au/retail/gardencityperth/ Sanj September 4th, 2012, 03:56 AM checked out mechanics on sunday after my 30th, great little venue. reasonably priced cocktails ($12 aperol sours), awesome deck, good staff ate like an absolute pig that day (no surprise). had a party at bivouac first, menu as per below - spiced olives, cheeses, cured meats etc to start - porcini mushroom+gruyere croquettes - arancini - pork hock terrine - calamari - goat chops - lamb, chilli jam and pickled cucumber sliders - okra, mushroom and freekeh risotto - layered chocolate mud cake filled with homemade nutella, raspberries, roasted hazelnuts and with a rapsberry italian meringue buttercream - sticky lemon bars - LOTS of booze id highly recommend bivouac for a private function, everyone loved it despite the different age groups there (5 year olds to 80) after mechanics ended up at hawkers for a boozy supper - crayfish noodles, marmite chicken, fuzhou tofu, szechuan red hot beef great indulgent day acc521 September 4th, 2012, 10:23 AM Sounds like a great day. Ultimate Hater September 4th, 2012, 11:58 AM Sounds like a great day. sure does! jackso September 4th, 2012, 02:25 PM Sounds awesome Sanj. The cake I saw on FB today looked amazing! Reminds me I've got to get around to organising my 21st. Sanj September 4th, 2012, 03:13 PM scored an invitation to good food guide launch next week, gonna see if i can ask broadfield to sack all his azn food reviewers bloody red teapot etc making the list of best budget azn, absolute fucking disgrace, from memory some of the others were viet hoa and pepper lunch i reckon i could name 20 better budget azn restaurants, make me so damn angry. in the past the west has named places like TQR on that list which makes me so damn angry heard a rumour someone is considering open a fish and chips ala cicerello, kailis etc in nb on william st, wonder how that will go jackso September 4th, 2012, 03:32 PM I want to see a big Cicerellos type fish and chip place at EQ. Brings quite a bit of life to an area. Sanj September 4th, 2012, 03:39 PM yeah i think it would be good have you seen the kiosks that are being proposed for barrack square on short term leases? a friend and i are considering applying for one for 2 months, from december -jan/feb Sanj September 4th, 2012, 03:41 PM http://www.mra.wa.gov.au/Projects/Elizabeth-Quay/Investment-Opportunities/Barrack-Square/ looks interesting, a fairly low cost, low risk punt. jonwil September 4th, 2012, 03:45 PM Is there anything already existing anywhere near the CBD that qualifies as GOOD Fish & Chips? Or do I need to go to further afield to find decent F&C in this town? jackso September 4th, 2012, 03:48 PM Yeah they look cool Sanj. Come fitted out with basic kitchen stuff I believe. What are you thinking of doing? (PM me if you like). You've certainly got one customer! Sanj September 4th, 2012, 03:54 PM havent quite decided yet tbh. goals are high quality, high margin and reasonably priced jackso September 4th, 2012, 04:00 PM Crumbed sausage on a stick? Sanj September 4th, 2012, 04:02 PM haha speaking of which someone i know is doing corn dogs this sunday at the bird along with hainanese chicken rice check out FB page under law and order culinary intent - she's been doing some cool stuff there on sundays philly cheesesteak, banh mi etc jackso September 4th, 2012, 04:03 PM Philly Cheessteak! Sanj September 4th, 2012, 04:07 PM yeah the cheesesteak was really good she also did poutine which i unfortunately missed im considering going on sunday? date? we could go to mechanics as well, pretty cool place jackso September 4th, 2012, 04:14 PM Deal. I'm free anytime from 3:30. Been meaning to check out Mechanics too so this works great. I think you've got my number? jonwil September 4th, 2012, 04:26 PM I for one would give it a try if it was good enough food and if the value for money was comparable to what I would pay at KFC or Hungry Jacks or Subway for a nice lunch meal. By "it" I mean the stall at Barrack Square. Matt B September 4th, 2012, 04:47 PM high quality, high margin and reasonably priced Is anyone doing high quality, reasonable margins and well priced nowadays? Sanj September 4th, 2012, 05:03 PM There are a few places. Not many non azn options but they do exist Speaking of which, had a takeaway from the burmese joint in girrawheen recently, 1 large rice with goat curry and fish as well as 1 large veg lentil curry type dish for $12. Great dinner for 2 including goat and fish for $12, awesome Sanj September 4th, 2012, 05:04 PM Turns out I don't have your number, can you pls PM me? Will do the same PD September 4th, 2012, 05:29 PM Deal. I'm free anytime from 3:30. Been meaning to check out Mechanics too so this works great. I think you've got my number? so what is mechanics. Sanj September 4th, 2012, 05:45 PM I for one would give it a try if it was good enough food and if the value for money was comparable to what I would pay at KFC or Hungry Jacks or Subway for a nice lunch meal. By "it" I mean the stall at Barrack Square. im certainly aiming for value for money but no way will it be as cheap (or as rubbish) as subway or hungry jacks anyway it is still very early days, we are still considering the option so a long way to go yet Sanj September 4th, 2012, 05:46 PM so what is mechanics. new bar on william st opened by flipside owners. pretty cool place Ultimate Hater September 5th, 2012, 12:11 AM FYI/Non related/semi-interesting: Auckland is absolutely streets ahead of Perth when it comes to value for money, and variety, of dining options. Far less people than Perth here as well, it's pretty eye-opening. Really, the difference is astounding. Walked a couple of K's last night, would have seen close to a hundred little hole-in-the-wall joints, and lots of people out and about (Tuesday night). re: "value" fish and chips - a quality fush and chups meal here is about $6 - $8 Australian max per person (a bit cheaper if you order a larger quantity). In the last few days I've had free-range Venison steaks, sweat breads (lambs glands - fucking delicious), crayfish, and more, and it's been cheap! AndyGM September 5th, 2012, 01:40 AM Agree When I went to Auckland I couldn't beleive how much better it was than Perth in almost all ways, despite a lower population. Ultimate Hater September 5th, 2012, 04:46 AM Agree When I went to Auckland I couldn't beleive how much better it was than Perth in almost all ways, despite a lower population. Yep, seriously, I'm not putting down Perth - I'm more offering up Auckland, or even Wellington for that matter, as pertinent examples of how small cities in our own part of the world can offer so much more than Perth. Again, I put the blame with PCC, and other councils, and government bodies. They're ruining all potential. jackso September 5th, 2012, 05:20 AM As much as I hate to say it, I really think universal access provisions are a very bad thing for this city. WCG September 5th, 2012, 05:28 AM As much as I hate to say it, I really think universal access provisions are a very bad thing for this city. What's universal access provisions? samboy September 5th, 2012, 05:31 AM Access provisions for those who would almost never use it. It's an easy way for govts to tick a box and feel good about themselves for doing something a lot less beneficial to those with disabilities than potentially putting more resources into improving their quality of life in a much better way. Sanj September 5th, 2012, 05:32 AM you mean sped laws? acc521 September 5th, 2012, 06:25 AM Nate, it was the same in Europe. I was constitute amazed at how vibrant cities of only a few hundred thousand were. It's obscene that Perth is so dead. Saying that though, I was on Gertrude St last night for dinner, just proclaimed "the" food street in Melbourne. The venues were clearly busy inside, but the street life was non existent. Sanj September 5th, 2012, 06:33 AM of course street life is non existent you cant drink on the street, street food stalls are generally prohibited, absolutely anything interesting requires a lot of permits etc AndyGM September 5th, 2012, 06:44 AM Not sure what the actual rules are at the moment, but they should just have allocated precincts where it is available for all. For instance, in Fremantle between Norfolk st and High st along South Tce, there should be a blanket rule which states you can have a certain number of outdoor tables per metre of frontage, you can have outdoor drinking at those tables and you can have a certain number of sandwich boards to advertise your menu. That way, rather than having 30 different cafes all having to individually put in permit applications to the council (costing both businesses and council money) everyone could be free to do what they want. edit: same with food stalls. There should be allocated areas (many of them, not one token location) where people should be free to set up a food stall whenever they wish. |
