Geeez jarkti when are you going to get to wear all that stuff!

It's 17 degrees here today. First work day that I haven't had to layer!

Cardigans and vests are the way to go for work. Much better than wearing a t-shirt under your business shirt.

i dare say u sound roughly 3514 times more homo than i do in that post

Bahahaha I think not. No one should have to see that. Damn you, I think I'm scarred for life.

what did u have at bourke st?

I only had coffee. CKF had a sausage roll on your recommendation. I don't think he really liked it that much.

I wasn't impressed at all to be honest. I think you can see from the photo just how packed the place was. The line went from the counter to the sidewalk. We were waiting for a good 20 minutes just to order and then another 15 minutes or so until my coffee was ready. There is one guy making coffee orders. One guy. Doesn't help that the place itself is tiny.

By the time you get to the counter, you're frazzled and frustrated because people are pushing and shoving. If you've never been there before and don't know what's on the menu, you're forced to stand there and ummm and ahhh while you have a look at what's on offer while they give you impatient looks cause you're holding up the queue. Bloody well get a bigger place or give us menus so we can have a look while we're waiting!

I wanted to have a good look at the goodies in the glass display but some moron was blocking the way.

The attitude of the staff there is just not worth putting up with. We gave up.

u dont go to a really busy bakery and wait for a coffee woman, u go there for what they're famous for.

i would bet my left nut you would love their brulee tarts, they are really amazing.

kfc, what sausage roll did you have? the lamb, harissa and pinenuts one?

i did warn you about the wait though and yeah it isnt a lot of fun but i think if youre prepared for it youre ok. shame about the staff attitude though cos they were fine when i went but i agree, the last thing u need after waiting 20 mins is some dickhead with attitude.

What did you think of the Penang Laksa?

yeah i think youll like it. did u like the hanging meat (in the restaurant that is)?

penang laksa was a bit too sweet and not sour enough. seemed to have been whiteyfied. was also missing the fish/belacan flavour which is integral to the dish

actually im really keen to try the curry laksa at eden because i wonder if it will be missing the belacan too and i know both you and nate really rate it. i think it would have more of a chance of being able to mask the lack of it than the assam laksa though.

Rockpool Bar and Grill House Rules

Best manners and temperance are expected at all times

Don’t look fiercely at people, or talk loudly or harshly, but cultivate a smiling countenance and a quiet, but firm tone of speech

Gentlemen, don’t approach ladies; and if you are so lucky to have one approach you, endear her as you would your mother

No hooting, no hollering

Don’t bring yourself into prominence before a crowd at the bar.

Be polite and approachable, but let them advance to you

Gentlemen, don’t interrupt or join any conversation, but if it is general you may seem interested

Leave your attitude, with your hat at the door

Back slapping after six drinks should be tempered with mercy

Remember, nothing is on the house but the roof

appreciate the tips of picking up ladies neil

I get that and probably should've realised their portions would be small when the waiter hesitated when I asked him how large their portions were. BUT compared to places like Galileo, I would be able to have a full dinner there at a much more reasonable price than Divido AND I would walk away a much happier camper.

$31 for 5 pieces of ravioli and $33 for 3 rotolo is taking the piss. The artichoke ravioli at Galileo is only $18, roughly the same portions and much tastier.

So why would I go to Divido when I would have a better experience all round at Galileo?

haha i agree wholeheartedly, which is why although ive wanted to try divido for a while i still havent been there but ive been to galileo around 30 times. i find it hard to justify eating any wog food in perth apart form galileo actually. went to da bruno a couple of weeks ago for mums bday and we all unanimously agreed we shouldve gone to galileo instead - $380 for 4 people excluding wine (it is byo only) for food that was maybe 70% as good as galileos and service that wasnt up to scratch either.

Sank:
Yeah, exactly. I was really looking forward to Divido and was really hungry that night so I was supremely pissed off when my food came out. Everyone's reaction to their food was, is that it?? My girlfriend who had the lamb complained that it was really bland too and it was probably the most well-presented dish out of the lot. The scallop entree was weird too, came with corn 0_o

While I'm a fan of trying new places, it grinds my gears when you leave so bloody disappointed. Nothing worse than paying stoopid amounts for food that wasn't even worth it.

You're never disappointed with Galileo - the food and the service - and it's a fantastic place to fall back on, one that you know will deliver.

went for dinner @ la lola last night.

i like the relaxed, wank free atmosphere.

5 glasses of a sangiovese, 2 of stella bella SSB

entrees - 1 carpaccio, 1 chorizo dish, 1 capsicum

mains - prosciutto, fior di latte and rocket pizza, a prawn linguine and a pork belly, sweet and sour onion and radicchio pizza

dessert - a parfait and a strawberry and zabaglione dish i think (i didnt see the menu)

all up was $200 which i thought was fair. food is good, atmosphere is pretty good, only downside is that it doesnt take bookings so u have to wait in the lounge for a table. you can drink and order some nibbles in the lounge though so it isnt too bad. the mains did take a while though so if we hadnt ordered the entrees in the lounge we wouldve been starving

ill definitely go back but still wish galileo hadnt been damaged in the storm cos thats where i was meant to be eating last night.

samby - more your style of pizza, wood fired, thin base, not too much cheese, only a few toppings. i definitely rate this pizza over little caesars

mela is good but be prepared for it to be very casual and the service slow. it is quite different to most indian restaurants in perth cos it is a mix of north and south indian food and they do a lot of streetfood type stuff, especially on weekends. one of my favourite dishes there is their kheema dosa, which is a crispy, slightly sour pancake filled with lamb mince.

shits all over buddha bar in my opinion but then again im not a big fan of heavy, rich north indian food u get in most restaurants and i only eat it 2 or 3 times a year.

edit - obviously didnt read your question properly. it is quite a different experience to most indian restaurants but i do think food wise it compares favourably

I don't think I LOVE Grill'd that much but for my taste they are the best compromise between bun, salad, chicken, price, setting (don't eat chips).

I'm a chicken burger person and typically go without the mayo/aoili etc so the taste of the base ingredients is important to me.

Ideally I would go with Flipside bun/relish and Grill'd chicken/salad and sit at grill'd

What I also like about grill'd is the quantities of each ingredient relative to the other. You can bite into all ingredients with each bite and there's no leftover bread or oozing salad liquid (Jus) on the plate.

A guy was out the front the other day with a pneumatic drill breaking up the concrete - in trainers and no safety goggles / anti vibration gloves / ear defenders!! Looked like he must be the owner doing the job on the cheap!

Whole building needs knocking down and something several stories high going up imho! But I guess the Elephant and Wheelbarrow wouldn't want that as it would likely be apartments - and the new residents would complain about the noise!

America’s greatest contribution to world gastronomy was first served in 1885 at the Erie County Fair in Hamburg, New York. wassup bitches!

OK, so now I am in Ipoh, Malaysia. I just spent a week in KL, and as a city, it has moved right up my list. I have been there before, but this time, I saw so much more. It really is a great city.

Favourite place that I ate was called Yut Kee restaurant. Favourite meal - Roti Babi - a roti filled with pork, onions, etc. Actually, I ordered three lunches that day, because I couldn't decide between Roti Babi, Chicken Rice, or Pork Chops. Also got some Kaya Toast, and a few drinks, and the total came to 27RM (about 8 bucks). Bargain.

Now in Ipoh, Malaysia. Tonight, had a whole "Yim Kok Kai" chicken... a chicken cooked in nothing but salt and herbs, in a kind of giant wok presure cooker. The meat was tender, the skin, infused with herbs. Chicken like I have never had before. Apparently the joint is famous "Aun Kheng Lim Restuarant".

So, foodwise, things have been unbelievable. Indonesian food is amazing, I have a new love - Bakso Ayam Soto - a noodle dish, with rice, and chicken, and meatballs, and tofu, and veges. Average price was less than a dollar.

....hows things acc? I see you are online...

Haha, what are you saying? I am not sure I like the sound of chocolate dipped chips. The ruin of a good chip. Tuna in bechamel is really nice though, with chives, lemon and pasta. I suppose it might cross into trashy-eat at gravox white sauce?

Just that it's got lots of photos of food people made themselves.

Anyone been to V Burger Bar (http://www.vburgerbar.com.au/) (obnoxious music warning) in EVP? Prices are $9-$12.50, I had the Pepperizo which was OK except the chorizo was in huge chunks that were hard to break apart.

Had the sirloin with betroot, asparagus and horseradish cream starting with a selection of breads and a nice glass of SSB.

yeah it is my favourite restaurant in perth (which is a big call), have been there over 30 times.

amazingly consistent restaurant and great value for money in my opinion. to have no mains over $30 for great food while employing professional waitstaff and paying shenton park rent is pretty damn good

was pretty impressed with sherbet last week.

spoke to them about getting a couple of cakes on thursday for a bbq we were having on saturday as they were closing from friday for easter. i suspected it was a bad idea to do that true enough they advised me that they wouldnt recommend buying it as it wouldnt be great after 2.5 days.

although it is something that makes sense, id like to see more places do something like that, instead of thinking about the $100 the 2 cakes wouldve cost.

im constantly bagging out places for their lack of professionalism so i thought sherbet deserved some props for this. i only hope that they did it because of their passion and not just because im a regular.

Yeah, it's rare to see a place in Perth that's more concerned about your enjoyment of a meal, and the reputation of their food, rather than money (and the foolish thing is that with great word of mouth comes money).

I'm gonna try and pop into Simbucks in Yokine for lunch today, apparently it's one of the only Kosher cafes in Perth.

i had a brilliant sticky date pudding on sunday night, place in port melbourne called don dino's pizza & pasta bistro... tacky looking restaurant but one of better ones i've been too of late... always used to think, what a dive, but it was always packed, typical port melb crowd and it's across tha road from a housing commission block... i always seemed to overlook this place... lol. never juddge a book by its cover... i know i should know better... eep.

grill'd in mt lawley is a big fail for me. Disappointing. Tried it twice now. I'll go on Mondays when Jus Burgers is closed, if I'm dying for a burger. But yeah, ain't no good.

I'd say grill'd burgers are one step above bog-standard.

First-up, the staff (of which there appears to be hundreds - seems way overstaffed) have to wear really stupid looking bandanas in what feels like a condescending appeal to their target demographic.

The menu is bloated beyond comprehension. I was literally baffled by the selection. Mostly because all the burgers have fucking stupid names that barely suggest what's inside. I had a "Hot Mama" and some other bullshit the other time. What the fuck.

The bread they use is disgustingly white - we're talking crumbling to pieces after being toasted. They have options for the bread, both times I asked I still got the usual white roll. You know when you toast a shitty roll, and you take a bite, and you wind up inhaling crisp toasty shards of bread and wind up coughing for 5 minutes? That didn't happen, but only because I was careful to exhale at the right times.

The chips (herbed and thick cut) are good but over-salted and if you want sauce, it's 70c extra. Of the two sauces I've tried, the mayo & relish are nothing to write home about - infact the relish was pretty foul. 70c extra for sauce is fucking stupid. Although they did have tomato sauce in bottles around the place, so I guess I'm the stupid one.

On a busy day I had to wait about 20 minutes for a burger and chips. There were so many staff in the kitchen I was baffled by why it took that long, seeing as the burger looks like it gets handled by 5 or 6 different people, but whatever. On a quiet day it took a little less time, but not by much.

Anyway. Don't recommend it.

Good question.

I've had it at quite a few places but it's something that's mostly overdone or not done well. I think if Perugino offered sticky date pudding it'd be good but unfortunately they don't.

This one I had at Gavino's was slightly above par compared to a lot of others:

had another amazing dinner @ galileo.

good to know that even when Una (one of the owners who runs front of house) isnt there there are no problems with service. they remembered my rabbit that i had requested, remembered it was my brothers bday, drinks were topped up regularly, great wine recommendations, got the same table as always etc. they even brought out heaps of bottarga when i requested more.

had by far the best rabbit dish ive ever had, god damn. cooked on the rotisserie and then finished in woodfired oven (i think), u get close to half a rabbit, was a huge portion and was amazingly tender but full of flavour

2 glasses of red, 1 glass of white, 2 glasses dessert wine, 1 limoncello, 1 cocktail

some bread to start
1 ravioli (theyve changed it slightly jackso and mincy, it is an even bigger portion than before but now in larger raviolo type parcels. still great)
1 cured salmon entree
1 kingfish entree
1 sardinian dumplings with bottarga and salmon

1 rabbit
2 chicken mains
1 pork main
1 roast vegies side

1 mud cake
1 poached peach with almond frangipane
1 tiramisu

2 coffees

all for only $317 which is amazing value in perth. the last 2 bday dinners, at da bruno and clarke's both came up to around $380 and involved meals where we had to bring our own wine AND the food and service were no where near as good.

you can definitely eat for less there as well as we were all pretty full after that.

World Cup comes to the Northbridge Piazza

7th Apr 2010

From June, the City of Perth's newest gathering place will be transformed into a live site for soccer fans following the City of Perth Council's decision to broadcast selected games from the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

The City will screen six pool games and all of the final 16 games.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said that the Council's decision to screen selected games struck a healthy balance between supporting Northbridge traders and giving the public an opportunity to celebrate the World Cup as a community.

“I would like to encourage all Northbridge restaurants to embrace the World Cup atmosphere,” Ms Scaffidi said.

“It is a great opportunity for traders to theme restaurants with flags, offer special menus and take advantage of the excitement that accompanies the World Cup,” she said.

“We decided to show a selection of pool games in earlier family friendly timeslots. This will allow families to experience the excitement of the games, whilst not taking business away from the retailers trading with special late-night trading permits.”

“All matches from the quarter finals on will also be shown, giving Western Australians a place to gather as a community to celebrate the world game, and hopefully, cheer on the Socceroos to victory,” she said.

The $13.6million Northbridge Piazza holds 2,000 people and has an 8m LED outdoor screen.

GAMES SCREENED
• All 16 finals matches to be held from 26 June
• Korea Republic v Greece, 12 June at 7.30pm
• Germany v Serbia, 18 June at 7.30pm
• Netherlands v Japan, 19 June at 7.30pm
• Ghana v Australia, 19 June at 10.00pm
• Slovakia v Paraguay, 20 June at 7.30pm
• Italy v New Zealand, 20 June at 10.00pm

Yeah the Piazza and screen are wroking quite well. Free wifi now as well.

Its a little bit of a shame that there are only a few World Cup group games being shown - and only at weekends. Would be good to have more stuff on during the week (and more Australia games).

But all knock out games should be great - especially as its only a 5 min walk from my house :D If they can generate an atmosphere even just 1/10th of the atmosphere of the fan parks at the World Cup in Germany it will be amazing.

Only a few group games (6).

And chances are only 1 Australia game as they are going to find it hard work getting out of the group.

However, if they do it would be likely to be England v Australia in the round of 16 - the place would be packed!! I think its great that they are showing all knockout games, just worry that the spirit will waver away once Australia are out.

Yesterday turned into a shitstorm, but finally had a chance to pop into Simbucks today. Hmm, as far as a cafe, nah, it's more a jewish takeout place, with a few tables. I bought myself a tuna and beetroot bagel (they're primarily a bakery), and I'd say it's the best bagel I've had thus far in Perth. Perfectly boiled, great texture, and just a delight. Had some poppy seed cake as a kind of a desert, and I was loving it. That said, I've got more fond memories of foods containing poppy than other people, as when I was a kid, the only deserts we'd have would contain poppy (typically makowiec, http://www.thefreshloaf.com/recipes/makowiec).

I'd definitely recommend it for the bagels, and its got a decent jewish grocery section, from which I bought the following:

http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/9859/photogb.jpg

The fish spread kinda explains itself, but halva is a sesame based snack: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halva.

I had a chat with the owner (during which quite a few hasidic jews came in to buy some lunch), and asked him whether he knew of any purely kosher/Israeli restaurants around Perth. No luck :(

In summary, it's a decent place to grab a great bagel, but not worth going out of your way for.

Never been, but looks decent. As far as the entrees go, the scallop bruschetta seems interesting, and I guess the duck and fig (I prefer my duck hot, preferably prepared by one of our slanty-eyed brethren). Lamb rack seems well worth a try, but that $11 corkage is, ah, interesting.

But yeah, like you said Sanj, this is the first I've ever heard of the place.

Yeah, unfortunately they don't seem to cater (PUNNY!) to the audience that would seem most likely to buy from them, i.e. the lawyers, doctors, and accountants. Jobless jew?!

If I hadn't specifically made time to visit the place, there's no way I'd be able to fit it in during a typical working week. Especially when you consider that Yokine is one of the Jewish hubs here in Perth, you'd think there'd be at least some place that would be open a bit later during the week.

That's not specifically a dig at this place, but aimed more at Perth in general.

Being that a lot of the Jews here in Perth are from South Africa, and those guys have a fair bit of business acumen, and money to throw around, yeah, it does surprise me that there's no dedicated Jewish eatery here in Perth. There used to be Besh Fresh, but that died about a year ago.

Which ethiopian ones are you thinking of? I was driving down Rockingham Road in Hamilton Hill about a month ago, and saw that one that sprung up over there. Personally, I've never stepped foot into one of these places.

Kosher Food Centre probably has the best range, it's on the same plot of land as the synagogue, so it does a fairly decent amount of business. Good challah (a knotted bread), but yeah, nothing spectacular.

Haha, yeah, not saying much that it's better than Billy Lee's (I go to Lee's quite a bit, mainly cause it's either that, Moon Cafe, or Maccas late at night). I'm thinking I'm gonna check out the Bentley one in the coming week.

Regarding Hammy Hill, shit load of blacks over there. It's where most of the refugees from Somalia have settled.

also, what we normally do there (cos the menu is a bit confusing) is to tell the chef to just bring out a whole host of stuff, that way you cant go wrong. you normally get a lamb dish, 2 chicken dishes, some lentils, some veg, some egg and a cheese similar to labneh. costs around $20 pp

Sounds good, and will do next time I go. When I go to azn restaurants I tend to go with a mate who's from Singapore. Helps to push my culinary experimentation that little bit further. Went to the Oriental Inn last week, and even though it was tasty, got raped by the waiters/waitresses coming round with the trays of food, and just putting more and more on the table. Nothing too spectacular, but the chicken feet were decent.

i dont mind grilld actually, it is certainly better than a burger from a kebab shop etc but for me it goes

jus > alfreds > flipside > grilld which is why id only eat it if in the area and felt like a burger, wouldnt go out of my way etc.

the patties are too thin for me and not juicy at all which takes the gormay out of it a little. i did think the flavours of the hot mama were good though (if that is the lamb with harissa one that im thinking of)

Nah, hot mamma was just... spicy beef or something. Patty was definitely dry.

Where's alfreds? I really disliked flipside. It reminded me of something you'd get from a van at a football game, greasy as all fuck.* Couldn't finish it.

I'm pretty sure Jus Burgers have ruined burgers for me forever.

*To clarify, I have never been to a football game, so this comparison may not be accurate.

hai gais,

wanted to say how disappointed i was in the beaufort st merchant on saturday. went there for a coffee while a mate had brekky, both coffees were shite, with mine being especially bad. When i asked for it to be remade, the waitress was cool but the barista merely shrugged his shoulders and was a general cunt about it.

on top of that, some of the bacon was burnt and their new pintxos/tapas menu is fucking shithouse.

out of around 12 dishes, maybe 3 are cooked to order. the rest are all pre-prepared or simply cooked like chorizo. NOTHING interesting and looked to be extremely lazy. their desserts are also now up to $13, which at a casual place is ridiculous.

on top of that, theyve taken the marrow off the menu which i suppose shouldnt be a surprise at they made their own brioche for it, which judging by their current lack of effort would be waaaay too hard.

extremely disappointing, eat a dick merchant.

I haven't been back since the menu changes were made - is the breakfast menu still the same?

And I don't know what some of you were going on about Jus Burgers. Was very happy with it Friday night. No increase in prices that I saw.

After Sanj's rant about Beaufort St Merchant I thought I would add my own.

Went to Lederville on sat morning and after having a look in the bike shop decided to get a drink / eat in Cranked.

Never again.

Slow service (ended up ordering at the till even though it was table service), dirty tables, poached eggs and toast - which was just that - 2 slices of white bread, not butter, no garnish, no sauce, and the eggs overcooked. I could have done that at home!! My mate has scrambled eggs and sausage - the sausages were lukewarm at best, and the scrambled eggs didn't seem cooked!!

Not surprised at all. I was there about two months ago, and the coffee was just horrible, Muzz Buzz quality awful. I've got the place on my blacklist, same as Exomod in the city, where I ordered a white mocca and got mostly congealed milk and mocca powder.

Actually, I've found Milkd in Maylands to be pretty decent, as long as you can tolerate being stabbed or mugged while making your way from the car to the coffee shop.

It's pretty basic stuff Mincy but done quite well. If you ever order the eggs make sure to grab (self serve) the maggie beer chutney they have on the back counter. It goes really nicely with it. They also have MB sauces which I haven't tried but the thick onion chutney is nice.
