Hey guys, I am thinking of going to Andaluz with my girl on Friday, can anybody let me know what it's like, or if there is a better alternative?
I will much appreciate any help.

Ive really enjoyed Anduluz each time ive been there. Really great spaces, its like several small rooms.

In terms of food, Im sure there are better people to comment but I really enjoyed the Spiced Chorizo, Pata Negra and the Carpaccio.

It can be full pretty early though..

Andaluz (well the one time I went there) was nice. Food was tasty, but vastly over priced for what it was. I bumped into Sanj when I was there and he went to Jun afterwards and I got pizza with my mate elsewhere. And this was after spending a not insignificant amount at Andaluz itself.

Def a good place to take a girl during the week though - dunno about Friday nights as I gather it's not the easiest place to have a conversation?

Sanj
April 14th, 2010, 02:19 PM
food is good @ andaluz, although expensive (you'll spend around $60-$70 per person on food alone which is fine in a restaurant but i find it a bit much in a really crowded bar). i wouldnt go on a friday cos it gets bloody busy, not so much fun but i would go on a weekday instead.

if you want a somewhat busy-ish atmosphere with good food and wine and table service i can recommend la lola in nedlands on hampden rd

they dont take bookings but theyve got a lounge you can have a drink and some entrees in while you wait. food is really nice simple italian food and they also do very very good pizzas, shits all over little caesars IMO

pata negra is also pretty good if u want tapas in a lively setting, similar cost per person to andaluz

if you do need to be in the city or within a couple of kms i know barolo has recently opened on beaufort st next to luxe but i cant vouch for the food cos i havnt been

Hmmm.
Thanks for the advice.
Yeah, it has to be in the city, or at least within walking distance for a lazy prick like me.
Maybe I'll try somewhere else, as I want to be able to have a conversation, and in my opinion $60+pp sounds like a bit much for what they appear to be serving, however I was looking forward to the 'Sanchez Romera Carvajal Jabugo Jamon'.

Is there a good Spanish restaurant in the CBD or Northbridge?

jackso
April 14th, 2010, 03:22 PM
The Jamon/Pata Negra is very good. In terms of other Spanish restaurants Sanj mentions Pata Negra but thats in Nedlands.

Dilaz89

The pata negra at Andulaz is $30 for 6 very thin slices. Worth it though if you've got the money.

miensie
April 15th, 2010, 03:44 AM
Wow.

And I thought the duck dish at Ha-Lu was pretty expensive.

$18 or so for what would've been 4 or 6 slices of very thinly sliced duck.

Might be tasty but I'm of the opinion that that's not worth it. Then again, I have spent close to that on a rocket salad. A very small, rocket salad.

Sanj
April 15th, 2010, 04:09 AM
nah mincy, it is absolutely worth it for top of the line pata negra (if that is what it is). generally you pay upwards of $300/kg from a deli so of course restaurants charge more.

When: 12 - 2pm, 17 April 2010 | Where: PWS, 177 Bank St, South Melbourne | Cost: FREE

Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a little shiraz from the Margaret River and Great Southern regions of Western Australia is to be followed by Gevrey Chambertin and Chambertin Close de Beze from Burgundy. A thoroughly interesting business, with some inspired Chardonnay in its first releases.

There's something elusive and ethereal about these Marchand & Burch pinots - they had us mesmerised. CAMPBELL MATTINSON AND GARY WALSH, The Big Red Wine Book
Pascal Marchand and Jeff Burch will both be in the store on Saturday to present all the new releases including Chardonnay, two single vineyard Pinots from WA as well as an 2007 Meursault and Gevrey Chambertin. These are excellent wines and we look forward to seeing you this weekend.

Rob tends to be pretty good. I'm yet to see another reviewer in Perth give as honest opinions as he does, as most seem to be so ecstatic they're getting paid to eat, that they give any shitty place top marks (luckily I'm not cynical enough to suggest that payola is involved).

The Quarter gets a big tick from me. Coffee was good, went with a few friends so we could sneak tastes from each others meals:
-bagel, scrambled eggs, and salmon were great, eggs were a bit wet, but I prefer that to the tendency that most places have to give you dry eggs
-damn good porridge, looked steel cut, but don't quote me on that
-amazing pancakes
-good hash browns

On another note, visited tiger tiger coffee bar again recently, and apart from the location, I still can't say I'm impressed with the place. Coffee was mediocre, burnt on both occasions I went.

funny you should say that. I used to go to TT quite regularly (before switching to Zekka) and their coffee was always reasonable. I went back the other week and the coffee was badly burnt. Very disappointing indeed. It was made by the same person (owner) so something must be amiss. Not rushing back anyway.

Oh my poor brother. Highly regretting his decision to return home, he thought that it was about time he started making more of an effort to go out with his mates again. He got into Subi, wearing his new Fred Perry suede shoes that he bought over here (they were actually his third choice but he chose these ones for their ''Perth friendliness", gets to the Llama bar and... "sorry, you can't get in with those shoes". He reckons there were several people in the line whose shoes looked so dirty and battered up, but were ok because they were plain black leather shoes.

Sigh!

Had hands down my best white mocha earlier today. Jayne's Addiction on Market St, Fremantle. They use molten chocolate instead of powder, and goddamn, does it make a difference. It's run by a mother/daughter team, with the Mum making the coffee. Only problem is that it is somewhat on the expensive side, as I was with a friend, and both our mochas (med + large) came out to $13.70.

I'll be checking the place out later in the week for lunch, and will grab some photos and a proper review then.

Went to Gallileo last week and have to say I was extremely impressed with the food, and it came to just under $200 for 2 people which I thought was very good for the quality of food and wine (buschetta, 2 entres, 2 mains, bottle of red, glass of white and a cocktail).

However, the service was a bit tardy when we first got there (may have been that we got there at 7.45, by which time most of the rest of the place were already well into their meals and so the serving staff were busy with them). Took 20 mins to get some water, at least another 10 mins before they took our drinks and food order, and so we had been there an hour before the Bruschetta came.

Sanj
April 19th, 2010, 07:38 AM
that is a bit of a surprise.

even bruschetta taking 30 mins from the time you ordered seems to be too long. i wouldve been pretty damn hungry at 8.45

they might be still adjusting to una (one of the owners) not being there as she's pregnant but im sure they'll have it all sorted. i went last week and my folk went back after that and on both occasions service was fine. also had another mate go last week who is extremely fussy (one of these former perthys who moved to melbun and became all about melbun) and he said it was faultless

$13.70 for 2 coffees?? jesus wept

id want the mother and daughter to be making it topless for that price

did you ever go to riki blakes in north perth before she sold it? they used to make an amazing hot chocolate with melted couverture in a shot glass that youd pour into the milk yourself. was so damn good

Haha, nice mum, but not the kind you'd want to see topless. After we tasted our coffees, she asked whether they were okay. Mine was spot on, but my friend said hers wasn't sweet enough. Owner fixed it up, no problems, with a smile to top it off. Just damn good service. Yeah, white mocha is simply a mocha using white chocolate. Like I said, expensive, but so worth it.

Unfortunately never went to Blakes when the old owners were there, so I never got to experience the joys of their hot chocolate. That said, San Churro in Freo is pretty good, damn tasty churros, and their hot couverture is good.

Edit: When there a few months ago with some mates, one of them a slanty eye, who while skinny, has a damn big appetite. Ordered a piece of mudcake, which apparently was to die for. A massive piece, with dark and white chocolate dipping sauces (basically molten couverture).

I've heard mixed things about San Churro. Some people have raved about it and others have said that it's a bit meh. Funnily enough I've been to Koko Black and Max Brenner but not San Churro. Koko Black is still my fave - just as good as anywhere I've been in the world. Max Brenner was overly sweet and seemed a bit less focused on simplicity.

In London, L’artisan du chocolat ftw (although their hot chocolate is shocking). In their Westbourne Grove store they have a changing chocolate sculpture at the entrance and when you walk in the smell is just mindblowing. Plus, you can fill yourself up on free samples, and they have half priced chocolate cocktails on Sunday afternoons :)

I'm pretty sure Jus/Grilld/Flipside use the same fat content beef. The leanest commercial mince out there is around 95% which I believe they're all using. I could be wrong though.

Overall the quantities for both chicken and beef are a little higher at Jus. Speaking of which according to their website Jus is opening a new store in freo soon. + William st according to Nate. Talk about rapid expansion. I've heard it's a dangerous trap in business but who knows.

id be surprised if jus didnt mince their own beef. no idea re flipside but i remembver hearing years ago that some butcher in freo made their patties. could be completely bullshit though

grilld says their patties are trimmed of all fat and are 100% lean. there is no way they could do thick patties like jus if that is the case, would be disgusting.

i agree rapid expansion is dangerous, i hope he can pull it off.
i do think he'll be able to do it but im sure there will be teething problems.

damn you make it? any tips/recipe?

Hmm, not really. It's one of the only things I make where I make sure I'm using my good old trusty LeCreuset frying pan, so I get the sides nice and crusty. I go heavy on the sweet paprika powder, and very heavy with the garlic. If I'm feeling fancy, I'll blacken some red peppers on the gas, and then add them to the mix, sliced. While I'm not really an organic food junkie, garlic is one of the things I make sure to buy organic. Just so much more potent, and sticky as fuck when you're cutting it up. Make sure you drain the tomatoes well.

I've added anchovies before, which I fucking adore, but that's more for personal taste. Some tabasco on top is also a nice touch.

Of all my purchases, bar none, it is Le Crusset that I stand by as being the best buy. Obviously, not cheap, but so goddamn great. Can take a good pounding, great heat distribution, and just look good. I did make the mistake of buying a Le Chasseur casserole dish, and while not bad, you can tell in a second that it's a step down from Le Crusset.

Also, I when I was eating and trying to avoid eye contact with the lady that works there i noticed a door leading up stairs to something called "Sir James International"... Does anyone know what it is? I was too chicken to go in just in-case it was something dodge like taboo... haha

Went to the Quarter on Hay tonight. I've always been skeptical of the place up until recently when Rob Broadfield gave it 17/20. We originally intended to go to tiger tiger but they closed when we arrived (8pm).

I'm really glad we didn't end up at tiger tiger. The quarter was quite busy with only a few tables remaining. Service was very friendly although a bit slow at times. All the staff were good looking, a big (Y) in my book :P. We ordered the fish cakes as a starter to share. They were quite good but small and a bit expensive.

I ordered the pork done 3 ways ($30) while my friend got the red emperor ($45). We asked the waiter to match wine to those dishes which he did really well. The pork was perhaps the best pork dish i've ever had, one pork slice which resembled a cake with pork crackling as the icing, one hollowed out apple stuffed with pork mince and one pork fat gravy thing that tasted like my grandmothers home made gravy.

Please excuse my crappy description of the meal. I am a neanderthal compared to youse foodies on here. Overall, we both enjoyed it and would go back.

Service: 8/10
Food: 9/10
Ambiance: 7/10
Value for money: 7/10

Went to Mod Cafe for brekkie this morning with Gabs.

Place is relatively small and rather unorganised and scattered - took half an hour for my mocha to come out when we were the only two people in the place, Gabs asked for his flat white in a mug but it came in a regular cup so had to be sent back - but the coffee is good and service is friendly.

$4.50 for my mocha and $7.50 for scrambled eggs on toast.

They're still finalising the menu as they've only been open a month. He also said they don't yet know what people like/want. Nothing on the menu is too standout-ish, your regular cafe food.

Coffee was good though, very smooth and strong enough. Will be going back.

Went to Galileo last night for the third time. The food was nice, the service was too slow. It's been the same the previous times as well. They are very professional and know their shit but 30mins for initial order then 60mins between the time entrees were cleared and the mains arrived is too much.
This is probably a good thing for most but I feel like I'm olive oiled out. Way too much for my liking. The bruschetta bread was completely soaked through which isn't to my taste. Although their house bread is bloody nice.
Went to Grill'd tonight and it was totally packed. 20mins to order (est) and they said 35-40mins wait for the burger. Didn't wait. At this rate I can see a few more opening in Perth.

Four Australian restaurants make S.Pellegrino global top 100 list

FOUR Australian restaurants have been ranked among the top 100 fine eateries in the world.

Sydney's Quay restaurant was voted Australia's best and finished up at number 27 in the overall S.Pellegrino World's Best Restaurants list for 2010.

The harbour city restaurant had jumped 19 places from its debut 46th position last year.

Tetsuya's in Sydney's Kent Street came in at number 38, after falling from the 21st spot.

Executive Assistant to Tetsuya Wakuda, Kayu Hashimoto, said the master chef was thrilled to be included in the list.

"(Tetsuya) is very happy that he's in the top 50," she said.

"It is something that we take quite seriously so it's a nice reward."

Two other Australian restaurants made it into the next 50 restaurants making up the top 100 - Marque in Sydney at 67 and Melbourne's Attica at 73. Marque also took out the Restaurant Breakthrough 2010 prize at the awards ceremony in London.

Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar.
End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.
"We were celebrating into the early hours," said Marque head chef Mark Best from London.

"It's a great honour, just to be invited to be in the top 100 and to be surrounded by the chefs that I've always admired, to be sitting alongside them was just surreal.

"I was dragged up on stage and I couldn't believe it. It was just crazy."

Danish restaurant Noma took out the top spot on the list, pushing previous winner El Bulli in Spain to second, while third place went to UK restaurant The Fat Duck.

The list of the world's best dining spots was put together by a panel of more than 800 international critics, chefs and food experts from 27 regions around the world.

The list has been issued by the UK's Restaurant Magazine since 2002.

It's true, she has a massive arse.

She does have a sort of constructed persona. Over the last few years they have worked hard to create her into the 'simple cooking' mother with no time at all who uses whatever ingredients she has and isnt really all that great a cook, just smart. Prior to this her recipies were really quite complicated and involved a lot of time ('How to be a domestic Goddess' for example). There are also a lot of reports around London that she eats out A LOT, like, most nights. But with that much money, why not.

Had a late lunch/early dinner with a friend at 44 King St today, ordered the veal with duck fat fried chips. Very tasty, and for just south of fifty, not all that expensive.

One thing that did piss me off: while having desert, called the waitress over to place an order for a takeaway coffee (I'm a relatively slow coffee drinker, so I prefer the convenience of being able to take it away with me). Waitress said it was cool, then about ten minutes later this douche bag French/Italian staff comes over (I don't know, maybe a waiter), and said it was against policy to have customers consume take-away coffee in the place. Okay, cool. About ten minutes later, when heading out, I ask for my coffee, and this asshole acts like I took a shit in his eye. Coffee wasn't that good anyway.

call me crazy but just under $50 for a dish at a cafe with cafe service seems ridiculous. you'd expect fine dining service and food at those prices.

eg the mains @ star anise and jacksons cost about that, the signature main at ezard in melbourne which is a stunning pork hock dish that takes a day to make and involves a lot of different processes and techniques is around $50 from memory.

desserts are meant to be good there arent they? i havent been there in years

I mean, yeah, it wasn't cheap, considering that the service (and the place as a whole) seems like a trumped up cafe, but it was damn tasty, and I was all too willing to pay that bit extra for the joy of duck-fat fried chips. Friend had a seaweed encrusted salmon dish, which cost $19. While small, it did have a taste, and it was pretty damn good, especially the beef broth on the side, which seems like a weird combo, but worked together quite well.

Yeah, deserts were good. Shared a date and ginger pudding, with creme fraiche. Simple, but tasted damn good.

I'm flying out to Melbourne for a few days later today (conference), so I'm looking forward to getting a good feed in me over there. Just checked out the site for Ezard - fuck, I have to visit the place. The food looks fucking gorgeous.

fair enough i suppose, i certainly am not above paying over the odds for something tasty (getting raped at boatshed being a good example)

ezard is really nice, have been there twice, once alone and once with someone.

both times the food was really good, he manages to pull off asian flavours with french techniques and modern presentation effortlessly and without compromises. the infused olive oil you get there to start with the 3 flavoured salts is amazing, they actually sell the olive oil too, for around $20 a bottle. i usually have one around but am out at the moment.

recommended it to my folks as well as to a mate who lives in melbourne and they all loved it. the service is also spot on, i remember all of us being impressed by the maitre'd who was extremely polished for someone under 35

Boatshed restaurant: had a very nice duck liver pate there, confit of duck (okay, you can probably tell I fucking adore duck), and a damn good vanilla brulee.

Boatshed markets: I might as well just deposit my whole paycheck into their coffers every fortnight, I buy from them so often.

ezard is really nice, have been there twice, once alone and once with someone.

both times the food was really good, he manages to pull off asian flavours with french techniques and modern presentation effortlessly and without compromises. the infused olive oil you get there to start with the 3 flavoured salts is amazing, they actually sell the olive oil too, for around $20 a bottle. i usually have one around but am out at the moment.

recommended it to my folks as well as to a mate who lives in melbourne and they all loved it. the service is also spot on, i remember all of us being impressed by the maitre'd who was extremely polished for someone under 35

I'm getting excited! On a side note, that's why I've always loved Vietnamese cooking, especially baked goods, as they mastered fusion cooking way before it became trendy.

There is a huge, new Virgin Active gym near my flat but it's like £40-50/month!

I miss paying $770 for 2 years at New World Health and Fitness in Warwick :(

I have a friend that goes to a gym here and pays $349.99 (...) a month. And when you start, you give them a roster of what days you will be attending the gym. If you miss one of those days, they fine you $60.

There's a Virgin Active gym on Bourke st here, full of yuppies all day and night.

Hey Vic, being an ex bagel addict I tried the place on flinders st you were talking about but I found it quite buttery (more like a croissant) similar to the one in menora. Don't get me wrong it's very morish and I'd easily eat 5 (that's the problem I guess).
I'm open to being educated but are authentic bagels meant to be buttery?

Nah, but either way, the buttery ones are pretty delicious. Should be nice and moist, but not quite bready, and shouldn't be all that crunchy on top.

I try to avoid things too buttery (like croissants), as I could eat them over, and over, and over... Unfortunately, I've gotten hooked on palmiers, basically flattened out, crisp croissants, without yeast, and a bit sweeter. Fooking delicious.

Yeah I'm childish - but whoever put ginger and date together in a pudding must have a small chuckle.

haha yeah sort of. By today's standards I was never fat but I dropped around 10-15kilos (no diet) a while back when I took up triathlon (non-pro) for a few years. Learned a lot about healthy eating during that time and have tried to maintain it over the years, although I don't exercise nowhere near as much these days. It just becomes a habit and I find it extremely easy not to eat/crave unhealthy food. In terms of volume I eat quite a bit more than the average person. (e.g 2.5 chicken burgers ;))
Helps with my philosophy of trying to be different than the majority in every way.

had a pretty good dinner at il lido last night.

had about 8 shared starters, a main each, and 2 shared desserts as well as a bottle of wine and a cocktail for $310, which is really good value at around $60pp

highlight was definitely fresh tagliatelle with oxtail ragu as well as the octopus carpaccio.the tagliatelle was one of the best pasta dishes ive had in a while, highly recommended for anyone who likes oxtail and pasta. it was rich without being at all heavy.

was a bit disappointing actually. it was smaller than i expected and there were less meat producers than i expected also. wasnt a great selection of vegetables although the stall selling different types of lettuce etc had great looking stuff.

bread was also a bit meh, the guy selling coffee was extremely slow and a bit rude and there wasnt a lot of food to eat there, although i did have a pretty good yabby pie. i did have some really nice yoghurt though, no complaints there.

how much was the meal?

acc521
May 6th, 2010, 02:34 AM
^^I've edited the post to put descriptions on. Seriously amazing meal mate. The whole meal came to 390 pounds (inclusive of 12.5% service charge).

65 pounds was for the entrée, main and dessert, plus those other smaller bits and pieces that don't have descriptions. x 4

Add to that one beer, one bottle of red, two glasses of white and two teas.

When you consider the level that a place like this is on the dining scene, I don't think that 100 pounds was that bad to be honest. The food was just so amazing. I wanted to try everything on the menu. The service was unlike anything I have ever experienced before as well. Excellent, excellent experience. I also really liked the fact that it was upmarket but very friendly and unpretentious.

Surprisingly not so. I was also checking out Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester and the 3 course dinner there is 75 pounds.

Oh and with the Celeriac, they bring it out on a wooden board in the bread that it has been baking in and cut it in half while explaining how the ash flavour permeates it, they then give everyone at the table a smell before bringing it back to the kitchen to finish preparing the dish. Very cool.

I'm pretty sure it is Sanj but I could be wrong. The reason I say this is because they have a few maggie beer sauces on the bench and this relish in a generic jar. I assumed they may get it in bulk and xfer as needed. Although it could be some home made stuff. I'll ask next time I'm there.

The slow service MAY be a weekend thing. I've always been there on a Fri/Sat night and always had slow service so assumed it's the norm. I typically load up on their bread. The bastards make it salty which makes it very morish.

rabbit - it isnt usually on the menu, i had requested it a few days before so they brought it in which is another reason i love the place. there is nowhere else i can do that. their piglet is also amazing but they've had trouble getting it recently

one hour between entree and mains is too long though, weekend or not. i think even 45 mins is acceptable there on a weekend as it's the sort of place that you go to for a leisurely dinner anyway but 1 hour would be a bit long

sherbet rocks but the coffee can occasionally be inconsistent. when the owners or the big-ish gay dude makes it ive got no complaints whatsoever but when the other dude makes it it's occasionally burnt.

i dont eat lots of cupcakes so not the best to comment. they do a red velvet cupcake sometimes, they had it most of last week but i didnt see it today or else i wouldve bought some (bought some cupcakes, muffins etc for someone today)

recommend (in no particular order):

salted caramel slice
ruby citrus poppy cake (not available at the moment, stunning)
passionfruit pound cake
lemon pound cake (they have it today, not as good as the passionfruit but still really nice for a simple cake)
banana, walnut and choc cake (today)
raspberry/blackberry and lemon syrup cake
white chocolate and raspberry brownie (today)
coconut layer cake
2 of their chocolate cakes (cant remember the names)

im sure there are others i have forgotten

salted caramel slice
ruby citrus poppy cake (not available at the moment, stunning)
passionfruit pound cake
lemon pound cake (they have it today, not as good as the passionfruit but still really nice for a simple cake)
banana, walnut and choc cake (today)
raspberry/blackberry and lemon syrup cake
white chocolate and raspberry brownie (today)
coconut layer cake
2 of their chocolate cakes (cant remember the names)

im sure there are others i have forgotten

oh yeah their chocolate banana bread is bloody good

Thanks Sank, appreciate it :)

Do they do a Red Velvet equivalent?

Particular cupcake there you like more so than the others?

I heart Red Velvet cupcakes/cakes. Hummingbird Bakery ftw!

I can highly recommend the Banana Caramel cupcake.

So you haven't been to any of the places on that site?

I've got Zekka, Sherbet and that cafe in East Perth down on my list of things to do.

Am also not a fan of relish in general but I'll try it anyway and let you know how it goes.

Hey mincy, after reading the reviews on the website i checked out mini espresso today (london court). The guys are VERY friendly and I really enjoyed the coffee. It's nice and strong. Give it a go, I'm pretty sure you'll like it. As for the place, it's basically a hole in the wall so not the type of place to chill out (mostly take away). Their menu is quite basic but with some variety.

Looks like they get a lot of regulars as one of the guys has made a sport out of remembering what everyone orders and pretty much shouts out your order before you even get a chance to open your mouth. At some point he was really straining himself to get it right.

Quickly checked out the Sancho bakery on Saturday and I must admit I wasn't that impressed. Perhaps variety was lacking due to being the first day so I'll pay another visit next week.
Didn't actually buy anything, just had a bit of a squeeze. I leave the pastries/cakes for the expert sweet tooths to comment on but the bread selection wasn't what I had expected. Baguettes were $8 from memory. The place is nice (thanks to natuzzi) but at face value I wasn't really blown away.
Needs further input from others.

Also this is what it says on their website so if they're not planning on opening on Saturdays except for opening day then it's a bit of a letdown.
Boulangerie-Patisserie opening hours
Monday to Friday 7am to 6 pm

The pricing I guess looks expensive to my eyes (>$10 for main breakfasts etc) but should be worth it *if* it's any good. Those prices are about the same as this cafe that isn't too far from the palace, which always seems to have plenty of customers despite charging so much for a suburban location :ohno: http://www.gourmetgirl.com.au/

I know that one was meant to be a double entendre.

Anyway - went to Grand Palace for dinner. Four people - $180 all up (not counting drinks) for entree (we all had the Grand Palace Platter (see below pic), shared honey king prawns, Mongolian Lamb, fried rice, combo noodles and a vegetable plate and had a desert each.

http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/9002/entree.jpg
(chicken skewer, dumpling, prawn bread and spring roll)

Everything was done pretty simple but tasty. Wasn't really sold on the honey prawns and prawn bread. But the rest was nice (and filling!). The desserts were ok but nothing special. Waiter was unobtrusive and knew his stuff. When we ordered he didn't bother writing it down - just remembered it all (correctly).

If it tastes good, that's what matters :)

BartBart
May 9th, 2010, 04:31 PM
^^ had to look up gweilo. (note the chopsticks that I used in the pic - so not totally whitey) I like my SE Asian food - really loved going to the old Hawkers Hut in the 90s. Grand Palace was supposedly given a good score by Rob Broadfield a while back and I can see why. Quite a decent selection in their menu - you could come back a number of times and not get through it all. And (not that I ordered wine, so didn't look at the wine menu in detail) there was quite a selection of wines. I should have tried the one non-whitey dessert (chinese pancakes with sweet potato filling from memory) - unless you consider fried ice-cream in that category.

Basically everything was done nicely without being a "wow" dish. Nothing I didn't like. But using the scoring system someone devised before - there was a high whitey factor present from what I could tell (my back was facing the majority of the room)

Whilst we were there I noticed in their menu book that they said the building is heritage listed. IIRC it isn't shown on any of the Perth Foreshore plans. Not sure how that works...

BartBart
May 9th, 2010, 04:44 PM
Yeah - that was just the entree. A sample of four different things, I guess. The sauces in the background of the pic were a sweet & sour and sweet chili. But yeah - presentation wasn't a high factor. Not that it was terribly bad either.

Sometimes when you cellar wine for long periods of time (these bottles are 1968/70) they lose some of their contents. Im not exactly sure how it happens, because it doesnt leak as such. It can happen even when its cellared really well. When you take it to a clinic the 'wine person' (vinter?) will decide if it needs to be opened and tasted. They can then fill it up to the correct point (its usually not much, a couple of centimetres maybe) with the same wine of a more recent vintage.

Got back from Melbourne earlier this week, and once again I remember why I adore the place. Fuck, my coin purse took a belting, but it was good.

Sanj, I took up your suggestion on Ezard. Fuck, fuck, fuck, that was a good meal. Started off with seared scallops with chorizo and eggplant baba ghanoush (hell, anything with baba ghanoush is a win in my book). The scallops themselves were great, and perfectly seared (I've been to too many places that don't let them caramelise enough). Main is where I really pigged out. Wagu with truffle potato mash, foie gras, and an amazing shallot sauce. I see why you recommended the place Sanj, as the main cost around $70, which considering the ingredients, the superb presentation, and the ambiance of the place, it's cheap as shit. Had a banana parfait for desert, and of course, it was great. Combined with a couple bottles of wine, and coffee, came out to around $650ish, which while a fair bit, was definitely worth it.

Breakfasts were a fairly non-descript affair, as the days were pretty packed, work commitment wise. Biero Bar was great, had a damn good scotch fillet with citrus soy sauce, and the place wasn't too expensive.

Coffee wise: cup of truth, yay; seven seeds, yay; starbucks, eh okay I guess.

I believe they do, and if memory serves, they also do breakfast burritos, which caught my attention for some reason. The coffee's good, and the whole place has a cool Melbournian vibe to it - cool but not wanky. Almost feels like the sort of place you'd find tucked into a little laneway somewhere.

Ventured down to dancing goat earlier (couldn't resist). Coffee's definitely good (top 4 of what I've tried in Perth), the place is nice if you can get a table. I was there around 11:00 and was pretty packed. Can imagine what it's like during eating times. The food menu looks interesting. Not exactly to my taste (I'm weird) but I have a feeling the majority here will like it. I had some fruit toast which was bloody nice (for those who don't like it overly sweet). Overall nice place and well worth checking out. My only complaint is the way the barista knocks the coffee out. Makes an absolute racket and the floorboards were literally shaking. It does get quite annoying when it's being done at the rate of 2-3 times a minute. Needs a softer touch.

sorry no pics mate as there's no menu (on the board). As vick said the brekky burritos look interesting, they also have some bagel/egg stuff. I've got a shocking memory!! I wouldn't say it's unique or innovative but at a glance it looked interesting. Also being at 11:00 I couldn't see too much food on other people's tables to know what it's really like.
