LOL dickhead. Try it though, it's unsweetened Rye bread with just the right amount of fruits and nuts. I wonder where it's from. Deinitely not New Norcia or Lawley's and I'm fairly sure not Barrett's

hmm i might actually, im not usually a fan of fruit bread as i find them too sweet (yes even though i have a sweet tooth) but that might be ok.

ask them where they get their bread, most people are happy to share. i remember being reintroduced to abhi's around 3-4 years ago because harvest told me that was the bread they used.

il lido uses barretts i believe

ive been a bit disappointed with lawleys the last few times ive had it and their pastries are pretty average so i rarely go there now.

same here, I'm over lawley's even N Norcia. Much prefer Barrett's except for their ciabatta which isn't really nice at all. Lawley's ciabatta is actually pretty good. Tempted to try JPSancho even if it's just once.

I was going to ask them about the fruit toast but got a phone call and had to rush out. Next time.

for ciabatta style bread temptations bakery in the boatshed is pretty good. theyve got a pane de como (i think) and a crocodile bread (whatever the wog name for it is) that will hit the mark for u i think. not cheap, but of a high quality. the croc bread is a pretty big loaf and is $8.75 or some ridiculous price like that.

agree re new norcia too, i think it's overrated. i do enjoy the tuna sandwich u can buy out of their mt hawthorn shop though

ah yes I forgot about the boatshed bakery. The guy is super polite, almost too polite for perth. Sort of reminds me of the royal 'sir' treatment you get in some asian countries. Their bread is very nice though. I may have tried the ciabatta but can't remember. time to go back.

haha yeah hans (i think that's his name) is cool. he used to do this awesome flavoured butter to try with some of the bread that i cant remember the recipe for now. ask him if u see him, he gave it to me before so im sure he'll give it to u.

the first time i tried that crocodile bread was with that butter.

edit - do u eat butter?

Went to the new bakery in shafto lane today. Very nice fitout, nice but clueless staff (extra points for being french), average food.

I did go after the lunch rush so there wasn't much left. I got the chicken baguette and my friend had a chicken pie. Both ok but nothing to rave about. It didn't look as if they had any takeaway bread either.

I'd give it another shot though, once they're more established and before lunch hour.

On another note CBD IGA is ok. Pretty small but quite full. Opening hours 7-midnight 7 days a week

I was there today too after lunch, so there wasnt a whole lot left. I had a Ham & Cheese baguette and a Strawberry Tart. Baguette was ok, Tart was pretty great. The creme patisserie was very nice. Chairs very comfortable.

that's the feeling I got too Dilaz (re no takeaway). They have it but one would expect baskets of various types of bread at a french bakery of supposedly high calibre. All I could see was some odd bits and pieces scattered here and there. ZERO visual impact.
I'll give them another 2 weeks then adios.

Miensie you magnificent lass, massive thanks for bringing up Sherbet. Went on Saturday, and fuck, I think I'm in love with the place. Went with a friend, around 3pm, and finding a table was relatively easy. That said, there was a constant stream of people buying cupcakes to go, so I take that in itself as a testament to the place.

The coffee was fucking great, had a stocky gay guy make it, with a trimmed beard. Spent $40: two mochas and eight cupcakes to go. While we're still yet to eat all of them, so far, I'd say the coffee cupcake is easily my favorite. Here are some photos:

Red velvet was fucking beautiful. Vanilla vanilla (green one) was decent, nothing spectacular, loved the coconut, but I've always been a fan of it. Banana caramel was good, and the rest were pretty decent.

I'll take any excuse to go again, so I'll definitely give the cakes a try next time.

i have been telling people i know about sherbet for a while now, im there 2 days a week at the very least, generally for coffee and banana bread before work and cake on the weekend. ive tasted nearly every single one of their cakes because i would buy them for my grandad every weekend when he was around as he only had an appetite for sweet things on his medication. probably my favourite little cafe in perth

by the way their zucchini and bacon tart is bloody good, didnt u say u eat some pork or am i thinking of another dirty joo?

As it is right now, I can probably see myself becoming a once a weeker, as I do consults once a week in Maylands, so it's the perfect excuse. The banana bread I'm damn tempted to try, as while I like sweet things every once in a while, I don't have all that big a sweet tooth.

by the way their zucchini and bacon tart is bloody good, didnt u say u eat some pork or am i thinking of another dirty joo?

I try to stay kosher, and will avoid pork most of the time (say, when having breakfast or something, where you'd usually have a rasher of bacon on the side), but if something looks especially tasty, then yeah, I become a dirty old jew. Basically, if someone offered me a plate of pata negra, I'd gobble it up like nobody's business

dancing goat is nothing to do with the melbourne goat. its owned by Rob and Annie (formerly of Bar One and Sayers respectively) and they've done a great job on the place. Real cool fitout, nice and chilled out place, consistently good Fiori coffee. Top four in Perth, Im not sure. Elixir, Spring, Epic and Velvet would all get the nod before the Goat, but maybe thats my preference to Five Senses coffee - there would be very few cafes above that.

On another note. Its my last week at Sayers. Moving to Sydney with my girlfriend (the good looking female barista @ Elixir) to have a crack at the big time athletics. Scored a trial at a cafe in Surry Hills called Le Monde, and Gem has a trial at Mecca Espresso - which is one of the three biggest names in NSW coffee. If any of you guys are over there, be sure to hit me up on SSC and ill let u know where im working!

I had an unexpectedly nice dinner at a cafe style place on Marmion St East Fremantle last week, a place called Juicy 9 Seeds. It was a braised lamb shank with a baked tomato, sauted spinach and a lemon and herb polenta cake and for dessert, a rhubarb and raspberry shortcrust pie with icecream ($27). My brother had a fish burger, but it just looked standard, although instead of chips it had roast potato, carrot and pumpkin fingers, which was a nice touch.

Usually those places have way too much of something on the plate but the meal was a masterpiece of proportion…it was nice to be able to eat everything and still enjoy dessert without leaving feeling like a giant truffle pig.

I choose to completely misinterpret Kelli's statement, and instead perceive it as being her way of vilifying all the Jews and Muslims on the forums, but belittling their lack of pork consumption.

Kelli, you've piqued my interest in Juicy 9, will have to try it out this weekend. Did you try the coffee perchance? I ask cause I had a quick look on Google (http://www.whatssogreataboutperth.com/2010/01/17/6-9-seeds-in-east-freo/), and while for the most part them seem completely enthusiastic about the place, the coffee, not so much.

Props to Flipside! I know some of you aren't fans but I like it and get takeaway fairly regularly. Had an average experience a couple of months ago and sent them some feedback through their website. Within 12hrs I had a response with an apology and offer of a 2 burger voucher. Same thing happened to a mate of mine last week. Nothing drastic just a little below par burger. Told her to email them. Again she said she had a response in a few hours with an apology and some vouchers.
This is the sort of thing that would make me want to spend my money somewhere. Establishments who read and promptly respond to emails (very very rare) and offer you a simple solution. Noone is expected to be perfect and mistakes happen but I will keep going back to a place that displays customer service and some humility.

great to hear actually. major props, i might give them another go purely because of that actually.

speaking of customer service etc, i went to barolo last week. atmosphere was pretty good, no one taking themselves too seriously, no attitude from waitstaff etc. fitout is pretty good as well although it is quite noisy as there are no curtains etc.

food was good without being great, certainly not worthy of some of the gushing re the restaurant since it opened. there has been talk about them doing the simple things well etc so i ordered 2 dishes i NEVER would order, eggplant parmigiana and bolognaise. ragu was pretty good but pasta was undercooked and with a dish that simple there isnt really any margin for error. parmigiana was pretty good. also, their pizza bianca entree for $6 is really good value. waitstaff need a bit of work but they can just about get away with it.

anyway i didnt say anything at the time as it wasnt undercooked to the point of being inedible but later on chatting to the manager he asked for feedback etc and when i told him he was genuinely appreciative of me telling him and you could tell he's passionate about what they're doing. purely for that reason i will give the place another go. wine list is also pretty good for a small list although their mark ups are around 100% which seems to be pretty high. having said that im no expert on what sort of markup is fair so i could be wrong.

eg i had a glass of mac forbes chardonnay, very nice, cost $13. i looked it up afterwords and i can buy a bottle for $28 from the winery, probably cheaper elsewhere

a bottle of mchenry hohnen rolling stone (also very nice) cost me $70 at barolo but can be bought for around $35-38

"The retail landscape of Perth is set to be reshaped as shopping centre owners take advantage of the imminent removal of the hated cap on floor size and expand substantially.

According to the Retail Traders Association of WA, centres such as Karrinyup, Garden City, Whitford City and Kingsway are likely to apply for expansion as soon as the Activity Centres Policy is approved.

"I understand some have plans ready to go," RTAWA executive director Wayne Spencer said.

The WA Planning Commission is due to receive the final draft of the policy on Tuesday and give it to the Minister for Planning for approval next month. The final document is expected to be released publicly in July.

Charles Johnson, executive director for strategic policy and research at the Department of Planning, told an Australian Property Institute forum last week that the policy's aim was that larger regional activity centres, or hubs, should house retail, employment and residential areas together, reducing the need for people to travel from where they live to where they work or shop.

"We are working on a population of about 2.2 million by 2031," Mr Johnson said. "More recently there have been predictions of 3.5 million people in the Perth metropolitan region by 2050.

"We really want to be talking about town centres, not just shopping centres, and to see a range of uses extended in many centres."

There would be a removal of the caps on floor-space -- with the exception of neighbourhood centres, which will continue to be capped.

"The policy that we have developed doesn't rely on any sort of cap -- it is not just about how big they are to grow but how they are going to be managed," Mr Johnson said. "We won't be debating simplistic measures about retail floor space."

Despite this, the hierarchy of centres would remain and the new policy would define what a centre was and what its physical dimensions were, he said.

"The issue is about the intensity of development allowed in the centres," he said. "A broader range of issues would be assessed, including local issues such as traffic and amenity impacts that could relate to the size of the centre proposed as well as urban design issues, the mix of uses and the likely impacts."

The final hierarchy will include strategic, regional and neighbourhood centres.

Mr Johnson said it was likely that retail developments over 5000sqm would go to the development assessment panels proposed in amendments to planning legislation, presently before Parliament. This legislation would cover any development valued at more than $7 million.

"That would also deal with the issue of duplication that exists in the system with approvals from the WA Planning Commission and approvals from the local council," he said.

Mr Johnson said there would also be changes to non-retail space.

"We are certainly increasing some of those housing-density targets and we are revising mixed use and non-shop per metre targets," he said.

Mr Johnson said the final document also addressed bulky goods retailing.

Mr Spencer said the new policy was far better than the Metropolitan Centres Policy which had severely restricted retail development and retail investment and increased retail rents significantly over the past 10 to 15 years.

"It is a huge step forward from what was an archaic and very bad policy," he said.WA's largest shopping centre, Westfield Carousel in Cannington, which is just below the 80,000sqm cap for a strategic centre, is about half the size of the biggest centre in the Eastern States, where there are no caps.

Joe Lenzo, executive director of the Property Council of Australia's WA division, said the council supported the new policy.

But the fact the activity centre policy required not purely retail but also commercial and residential development needed scrutiny to ensure shopping centre owners were not tied to providing other projects, he said.

"Westfield might want to redevelop Innaloo but it will be somebody else that will come in and do the residential or the commercial bit," he said. "It is not up to the retailer. We just want to make sure that is in the regulations.""

What to serve when the finest chefs in Britain come for dinner

Waterside Inn celebrates Michelin success with 25-course meal for culinary royalty

By Martin Hickman, Consumer Affairs Correspondent

Wednesday, 19 May 2010

http://www.independent.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00375/pg-14-michel-roux_375649s.jpg
Michel Roux outside the Waterside Inn restaurant, which he runs with his son, Alain. The Rouxs invited all the UK's Michelin-starred chefs to a 25-course meal

When Heston blumenthal, Raymond Blanc, Angela Hartnett, and dozens of other top chefs come to dinner, what do you cook? How about the turbot in chicken crust with sage, or the scallops with peanut sauce – or the snail flan?

If you are celebrating running the most successful restaurant in British history and serving the country's best chefs, there is no need to choose. Last night, Michel and Alain Roux served 25 dishes – including the three above – along with some of the finest champagne and claret in the world at the most extraordinary culinary gathering witnessed in a British restaurant.

The occasion was the family's 25th successive annual award of three Michelin stars to the Waterside Inn, the £150-a-head restaurant in the Thames-side village of Bray in Berkshire, which has maintained the highest standard of traditional haute cuisine for decades.

Winning a Michelin star is an accolade for which many chefs sweat in vain; Britain has only four three-star establishments. So when the Rouxs, father and son, came to wonder how they would celebrate 25 years at the top, they hit upon a twist to the usual practice of inviting the owners of the world's other three-star Michelin restaurants to a banquet. Instead, they invited the 140 UK chefs in possession of a Michelin star.

"We invited them all," recalled Michel Roux, 69, whose son Alain runs the restaurant day-to-day. "We were surprised. I was expecting about 60 or 70 or 80 of them to say yes, because not everyone can take a day off from the kitchens, but we have 116 of them, which is a huge compliment."

He went on: "I wanted to share it with the one, two and three-star chefs from the UK and not the three-star club from all over the world. There will be a lot of people with one star who are 25 to 35 years old – and they are the future of the UK."

On the guest list were some of the best known faces in British cooking, among them six who have recently had their own TV series – Blumenthal, who runs the neighbouring Fat Duck restaurant in Bray, fellow Frenchman Blanc, Hartnett, Tom Aikens, Marcus Wareing and John Burton Race.

Gordon Ramsay, who recounted his early days under the strict regime run by Michel's brother Albert Roux in his autobiography, sent his head chef Clare Smyth in his place. Other Roux proteges, including Pierre Koffman and Andrew Fairlie, who went on to run their own multi-Michelin starred establishments, were only too pleased to accept. Jean-Luc Naret, head of the global Michelin organisation, Gary Rhodes and the wine writer Jancis Robinson were among other guests.

On the menu was "myriade de canapes", followed by 25 courses – one for each year of the brothers' gastronomic excellence. 1985 was represented by Flan d'escargots en habit vert (snail flan with a green sauce) and 1995 by Canard aux clous de girofle et au miel (duck with wild mushrooms and honey.) This year was Terrine de foie gras et pintadeau truffé (foie gras terrine and truffled guinea fowl).

The classic French influence, heavy on sauces and seafood, was unsurprising given the Roux's roots at Le Gavroche in London, the two-star place now run by Michel Roux Junior, the son of Michel's brother Albert.

Courtesy of the Waterside Inn's suppliers, the wine list started with vintage champagne and became progressively heavier with white burgundy, red burgundies, clarets and a sauterne dessert wine, a 1986 Château d'Yquem. Twenty-four chefs prepared the food in the kitchen, which was open to inspection by the guests.

When asked what changes he had witnessed in British dining over the past 25 years, Mr Roux said: "It's not a change – it's a revolution. The young British chefs love cooking now. Before they were looking at cooking as a job for people who were thick or stupid.

"But it takes two to tango: now the public likes great food too. The public has found out that British food is a great thing. All that has happened in the past 30 years. Forty years ago it was the dark ages. You would not have found a person talking about food."

"It's a way of life," he added, explaining how he had kept three stars for so long. "I like things to be done well, very well. I'm a great believer that it doesn't take much longer to do something well than poorly – and it gives much greater satisfaction."

^No, but you are a giant ham.

Re truffle-pigs, they use dogs instead to sniff out the truffles on the Manjimup truffle farms, apparently because the pigs eat too many. Truffle-dogs.

Don't worry Kelli - I was actually giving Sanj a bit back after the "are you calling Goran a c**t" treatment. Wasn't making fun of you this time around!

^Ahhhh, I get it, you’re even more of a ham than I gave you credit for :).

my ugly mug can be seen laughing my head off in the promo for this years festival actually. im pretty sure they got me in the middle of taking the piss out of the uptight channel 7 reporter next to me, she started copping it the moment she said "i only drink NZ pinot" in a wanky way

You’re in there twice, its great footage, you've got the whole table in an uproar.

that's awesome! i want to see that movie now. I suppose planet would have it?

I think they would do. The Civic Video on the corner of Guildford Road and Caledonian Ave has a good range too, that's the type of thing they might have. I love food movies - have you seen Babette’s Feast? That is great as well, about french food. It has reminded me that I want to see Big Night, which is set in an Italian restaurant. The Cook, the Thief, his Wife & Her Lover is another good one. I didn't like Chocolat at all though.

i dont know if i would recommend Jun for a date, depends on the girl i guess. it isnt fancy at all so if youre trying to impress with a fancyish place it wont work.

the gook in me means that i can be just as impressed at a really casual place like hawkers as i could in say jacksons but i know a lot of people dont feel that way

steve - ha-lu and satsuki would both be good options. i somehow have never been to ha-lu but have genrally heard pretty good things. nine on bulwer is pretty good too but it is modern jap as is tsunami in mosman park. you'll get non seafood options at any of those 4.

wouldnt recommend matsuri or that teppanyaki place in the city i cant remember the name of, pretty average food.

overall though if casual is fine then definitely go to jun, just be a bit adventurous with ordering and you'll bve rewarded.

Enjoy mate all the best. Tsunami is a pretty nice setting to celebrate an occasion. Foodwise though i find it somewhat overpriced and overrated for the hype it seems to get. The food is nice but I've left somewhat hungry the 3 times I've been there. Although I have a feeling neither of you would care too much considering the event.
PS: Keep in mind the Ishiyaki portions are very small

If you could go to any fine dining establishment in Paris, what would it be.

I should be able to get a table at Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée on one night, and am looking for suggestions for the other night.

After reading all the hype about Esprezzo Cafe (Noranda shopping centre) and how brilliant their coffee is. #1 on the Perth coffee review website etc I ventured down there for brekky to check it out. The place was absolutely packed and remained that way. In hindsight the demographics should have been a warning.

The good - Nice friendly service, everyone who works there seemed to be awake and on the ball. They even asked me how I would like my eggs poached. Runny/Med/Firm. I was surprised they were that specific (although the result dispelled that myth). They have a great looking art-deco style coffee machine.

The bad

- Coffee too week and sour. Nothing special at all.
- Small tables massive plates. Can hardly fit 2 plates and drinks on one table
- Poached eggs were almost hard boiled (asked for runny)
- Toast = Cheap and nasty Coles brand or similar

Overall I was pretty disappointed. I'm somewhat dubious about all those reviews. It's either them sending all the feedback or it's just the Morley crowd whose only point of reference is Miss Maude.

On a positive note they have homeware shop as well nextdoor which has some very cool stuff. I had my eye on a BUGATI kettle but the $450 price just wouldn't get me over the line.

Hi guys! Just a quick food post from the past couple weeks.

Samby, I went to Zekka for brekkie. Finally  wasn't overly impressed. Their breakfast range is pretty limited but I get why that is, being more coffee oriented than anything else. I made sure to try the chutney/relish. Wasn't a fan of it at first but it grows on you. I'm not usually a fan of chutney but this was quite nice, had a spicey tang. $9.50 for two poached eggs on toast is pretty average but I've seen a few places do it a lot cheaper.

Lovely pictures.

That is funny, I just tried the red velvet cake yesterday. The woman at the counter said it was a cream cheese icing, but unless they somehow found a way of whipping it to a tenth of its natural density, I’m not so sure it was, it was extremely light, smooth and creamy, as was the cake. It didn’t taste cheesy either, unless she put whipped cream through it, which would explain both quandaries. I could never take it seriously before, with all that red food colouring, but it was the best chocolate cake I’ve ever tried, and the only one I’ve ever tasted better than my mums. I just had a try of someone else’s though and actually had an Orange and Almond cake, which was gorgeous as well, one of those where they boil the whole orange, peel and all and made with pure almond meal and no flour. I’m quite stunned by that place, there is just a whole new level of love in those cakes. I agree with Sanj though, their cakes are in a different league to the cupcakes. Also am a fan of the Blackberry and Lemon Syrup cake and the Plum and Almond.

What is that in the middle of the plate of oysters Acc, it looks like half a garlic?

If it's done properly, the icing should contain buttermilk. The texture sounds spot on.

Didn't even notice that thing in middle until I looked at the pic. Dunno what it is, the oysters weren't mine. I has these amazing scallops in a buttery citrus onion sauce.

i looked on the net and there are a number of different ways to do icing for red velvet, some with buttermilk, some with cream cheese and some with roux of all things. im not much of a baker so have limited knowledge but perhaps the use of roux in the icing (if that is what they used at sherbet) would explain the texture because it is really soft and creamy but at the same time it still has a bit of texture to it

glad u liked those 2 other cakes kelli, the blackberry and lemon syrup one is great, it used to be my grandads favourite. considering u dont like sweet things it shows how good the cakes are at sherbet to have you so impressed

Oh maybe that's it then, a roux, that would explain why it tastes buttery as well.

Yes, i love how they rely on fruit and fruit syrups, nuts etc for flavour and not sugar.

London, England. A city where Lamb Shwarma is exotic, and rickets is making a comeback. Being Australian, and fond of good food, sunshine, and attractive people, London was not my cup of Earl Grey. It wasn't all bad in London, must see tourist attractions included Paris, the magnificent eiffel tower, and the Somme region of France. But seriously, next time I feel the need to visit London, somebody shoot me in the face. Either that, or just stick me in a cold dark room with no windows, a warm beer, a slice of stale bread and a limp carrot. Which, coincendally, was the Sunday special at the Kings Ankle and Sheep Bladder pub in Camden. London is best viewed, when drunk. London is the runt of the European litter. London wasn't all bad, but it was at least 99.9% bad. On a positive note about London and the UK in general, since leaving London, we have visited France, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. Photos to come as soon. Big shout out to London's West End Cameras in Shropscock on Putwinkle, they saved a whole bunch of London shots from a roll I did my best to burn, lest I ever be reminded of London again. Nah, London's alright, innit guv?

I would have to agree with this. Perth is severely lacking in Thai places that are worth eating at. I've been disappointed too many times to even bother anymore.

I know it's not exactly practical, Dazzyd, but both my Mum and I were impressed with Thai food in Sydney. Cabramatta especially if you're after Lao, not Thai, food.

I have not once come across a place here that does bamboo salad. And that's a crying shame.

I do agree with you that their poached eggs are done very well. But as I'm not that into poached eggs, I don't really pay that much attention to it on menus. Over the past couple of weeks, we've had brekkie at numerous places. I've seen eggs done any way - poached, fried, scrambled (my fave) - ranging from $4.95 to $11.50. The norm is usually $7.50 or so. I wish I could remember where I saw the cheaper options but I can't as I'm more of a big brekkie person. Will let you know if it does come to me again, sorry Samby :)

By the by, is that espresso place you tried in London Court the very small place near the tie shop towards St Georges Tce? I am eager to give it a shot.

There used to be an awesome Thai place in Mt Hawthorn, same side of the road as New Norcia Bakery. Really different from your regular Royal Thai or similar Thai restaurant. It didn't even have a bad thai pun for a name... although I must admit I do love a good thai pun. 3-4 years ago it closed I think - damn shame.

If I wanted to take someone to good Thai in Perth I'd go to Ria in Leederville and explain that they should shut up about the fact it isn't Thai and just enjoy some great, classy, stylish asian food at a relatively bargain price for Perth.

I have not once come across a place here that does bamboo salad. And that's a crying shame.

Maybe if you gave them some notice and asked in your sweetest voice someone may pander to your wishes.

The Mt Hawthorn cafe is a bakery as well. They may do some products exclusively at the New Norcia based bakery like the nut cake? But they do a lot of baking at the Mt Hawthorn site. http://www.newnorciabaker.com.au/index.htm

My wife used to work there one day a week way back and for a 4 hour shift we used to get a mountain of end of day stock! yum.

hey mincy yeah that's the one. They use Fiori which I'm somehwat partial to as that's what I use @home although '5 senses' seems to be more popular. lawl. I knew there was a reason why I wished I'd had the opportunity to speak with you at the FP meeting, Matt :)

Unfortunately, I think the reason bamboo salad is hard to come by is because it's not something that would typically appeal to many people who like Thai food. It's very strong in flavours and aromas - ie. Lao ;)

had a quick lunch at the suite in shenton park today after my haircut.

it's owned by the guy who owns the cabin in my hawthorn and opened 3 weeks ago. vibe is pretty good, prices are fair, coffee is cheap (although that is probably forced due to the little pantry being next door). had a soft shell crab dish with pickled cucumber and wasabi mayo, was $16 or $16.50 for i think 3 soft shell crabs. portion size was pretty good for the price although im unsure if i got more as my friend is the chef there. i suspect it was the normal portion though.

open all day 6 or 7 days a week and has a small bar license so you can judst go there for vino etc

I was exactly the same, Samby.

Then I met a lot of the guys at the FP meeting last year and realised they're not weirdos. A lot of them are actually really cool people. Now I'd say I've met a good amount of people from the WA forum and I'm good friends with a few - ckf, Sanj and Gabs mostly. I adore Alvie but I just don't get to see him enough. If accy-acc came back home, I think we'd be good friends too.

Sanj and I were just talking on Sunday when we went to Jus Burgers that we should set something up with you. It does sort of feel weird for a few minutes but then it's just as you say - your online friendship transcends into real life. Sanj is a lot nicer in person, I assure you. And I think we would get along very well too :)

So yes, we'll have to set something up.

Had a very quick look in G-Star. I've never bought G-star so I don't know how much of the line they carry. Its hard to tell the stores between Industrie and G-Star.

Its really really good to have that part of the street activated again though. Hopefully its not too long before the last tenancy is done..

Dilaz89

Haven't been in to G-star. I've always found them to be tryhardish and over priced. I think perthgazer might have told me that jackets in Gstar are $400+. Next door at industrie, i got a decent jacket for $150.

The industrie store is really good and very well priced if you want unpretentious, plain clothing. As a brand they've totally lifted their game over the last 2 years.

acc521
May 27th, 2010, 10:18 AM
G Star is awesome, but as usual the range in Perth is very limited, and consists mostly of the ''try hard'' stuff that Dilaz mentioned. I always disliked G Star until I saw their range overseas and realised that the stuff they sell in Perth (at the stage through independent retailers) represented only a fraction of the usual men's range, and the bad fraction at that.

^^You want good looking sales assitants, go to Abercrombie & Fitch. Their sales staff are essentially models. Crazy stuff. It's almost like a club with all the low lighting, cologne smell and good looking people everywhere. There's actuall quite a gay vibe about it, and I reckon probably more than half of the male sales staff would be gay.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8118941.stm

...

Look book

At the company's only UK outlet, off Savile Row in London, there is no shop sign.

But it is unmistakably Abercrombie. A male model, in worn-out jeans and leather flip-flops, flaunts his honed torso just inside the doors.

This is shopping as clubbing. Alison Moyet's Love Resurrection throbs through air heavy with signature fragrance Fierce, an androgynous cologne muskier than more citrusy rival CK One. And it is dark, lit only by the spotlights directed at neatly folded stacks of faded polo shirts and raw-edge hotpants.

Housed in a mansion built in 1725 that was once a branch of the Bank of Scotland, it has the appearance of a revved up gentlemen's club. Dark walls, ornate fireplaces, gracious staircases.

And the place heaves with staff. Within a few steps, one encounters two doormen in check shirts. The half-naked himbo. A pair of greeters, one boy, one girl. Another pair dancing on a balcony. And a man with greying hair with a broom.

And they've all got the look. Individually, they'd be the most beautiful girl or boy in the room. Collectively, they become a mass of long locks, fresh faces and slender limbs.

The look is so easy to define as the company has a detailed appearance policy, revealed in a 2005 class action filed by 10,000 employees and job applicants who didn't fit the Abercrombie identikit enough to work the shop floor.

Chris Sanderson, strategy and insight director at the forecasting and consumer insight consultancy The Future Laboratory, says the company shifted its marketing strategy and its vision about 15 years ago. Since then, it has been one of the most influential American teen brands.

"What they did was wake the very conservative Ivy League look and sexualise it at a time when the process of brand sexualisation was happening at the top end of the market.

"They brought that to a mid-American audience, through photographers like Bruce Weber, and the A&F quarterly. It was basically soft porn for a very wide audience - young girls, young guys, gay guys."

...

^^Agreed, the A&F clothes are pretty standard imho bar the occasional decent t-shirt. You're coming at the best time for sales. When you do check out A&F, just about 20 metres up Saville Row from it is the Evisu flagship store - really awesome stuff and massive reductions during sale time.

Pepe Jeans is a brand I like that has some really good items, similar to Zara price-wise if you buy during the sales.

Went to A&F in Milan. The clothes were okay - no point in spending so much money on it. Weird how, even in the mens, there were hardly any women models (salespeople) - they were mainly men who walk way too close to everyone.

Agreed. On the quality of both stock and sales assistants ;)

There is one guy at Calibre, I think SD said he was a friend of his, with dark brown hair and amazing green eyes. Have you seen him? Gorgeous.

Their items are definitely overpriced though. Even their plain t-shirts are pretty insanely tagged. Nice shirts though.

In my opinion, YD have the most hideous shirts. Ugh.

I don't mind the jackets at Politix and unless it's a leather jacket or wool coat, anything over $500 is stupid. The most expensive jacket I have is a Cue campaign jacket that was just under $400. Even then, I had to think twice.

Shopping with a gay guy is even more fun than shopping with your girlfriends ;)

big bowl disappoints me pretty much every time i go unfortunately. the texture of their noodles is really good, im definitely a fan but unfortunately their soups are almost always insipid and lacking in depth of flavour.

if they could get the soups right they'd be on to a winner

yeh i didnt have any soupy noodles as i am not a fan of that kind. i just find it too soggy. im more of a dry type fan..

good soup noodles are NEVER soggy. best example of this is the ramen at nao, the texture of the noodles is superb.

i actually tried a dry noodle dish there the last time i was at big bowl but was disappointed as well.

All I know is Sank told me the Jus for Fremantle has been confirmed.

Will be good to finally get together though, yay! :)

Sank, was Spaghi the place with the squid ink pasta? Do they do a carbonara? Got a dinner there this weekend.

yeah they do 2 kinds of squid ink pasta, one is in a star shape. unfortunately they dont do any squid ink sauces, just the pasta so you dont get a very pronounced flavour.

used to be pretty good but my last 2 experiences at spaghi have left me pretty underwhelmed. that star shaped pasta was waaaay too thick and the owner is a bit of a bitch. if you're going to have attitude/be dismissive you better have amazing food to make up for it and unfortunately the food is merely good to ok, nowhere near amazing.

some of their stuff is pretty good though.

why the carbonara question? is this for your friend who only orders carbonara?

the only place i remember seeing carbonara made properly is al sito in inglewood where egg is used to thicken it, not shitloads of cream. im sure there are other good versions around perth though but the majority make me want to vomit.

Why do cool independent quality places always end up becoming chains. boo. Next they will bring in quality control to ensure all venues are the same, then the accountants move in and the source ingredients are rationalised to ensure consistency, next thing you know it I'll be having a kids party at Ronald McJus's place:)

I'm generally not a fan of rockport shoes (I figure another 20 years and some arthritis before I go there) but I was at Jim Kidd today and noticed these for $50 (2 pairs for $100 actually). Considering how comfy these bastards are and the normal price I figured it's quite a steal

Branded Burgers = shite.

They're the mob that just opened up in Northbridgr, next to the piazza. Got myself a Branded Cheese Burger, which cost maybe ten or twelve dollars. Took about half an hour to arrive, and it was decidedly average. Bun look straight from Woolies or Coles, with pickled sandwich cucumbers and caramalised onions inside. I will say, the meat was pretty decent (angus, but it's not like that's something unique these days). Shared onion rings and fries with a friend, both cost four dollars. Fries were good, onion rings were pretty boring. Batter was okay, you could hardly taste then onion, almost as if they had been frozen, and were really lacking salt. Tiny serve, barely enough for one person. I would have tried the wagyu burger, but it wasn't available.

Not worth a return visit. Grabbed a coffee afterward from Milk and Honey, and the mocha was pretty good.

funny you should say that. I just walked past that place today. First I couldn't believe the 'seafood' shop had already gone out of business then looked at the menu and thought hmm looks ok may be I should try it. Then luckily I looked at a table who had ordered a burger and saw the 'Woolies' sesame seed bun which also looked tiny and quickly moved on and had some DIM SUM.

Good choice. Thursday i had lunch with a mate at the Dragon Palace, and it was good, but nothing to rave on about. Chicken feet were eh, spring rolls were good, same with some really starchy potato dish that I don't know the name of (pulverized potato, a gummy texture, that was cut into one inch cubes and fried). Had some other fried stuff, and dumplings, which were pretty good. For desert we had two servings of these custard filled buns, with pineapple inside, which were fucking delicious. All up cost just under $50 for the two of us, which considering we were stuffed full afterwards, wasn't too bad.

The feeling I get from Branded Burgers is that they're simply trying to cash in on the gourmet burger trend, but have little more than a base knowledge to work with. I will say, however, that the waitress was friendly, so that's probably keeping me from being anymore of a bitch.

Funny thing was that when we were walking to the burger place, we passed the pizza joint near Connections. My first instinct was to grab a five buck slice from them, but relented. Probably would have enjoyed in a whole lot more. :ohno:

Haha, I'm a loud white guy, so I get that a bit, especially when I try talking to the waitresses in English, which in Northbridge, is a bad idea.

Dragon Palace was recommended to me by a slanty-eyed friend, so I knew it was gonna be good. I still have to try that other late-night place Sanj recommend a couple dozen pages back.

My rule is that if there are Asians inside/milling around, it's probably a good place.

I only saw this, sorry Sank.

Yeah, it was for my friend who loves carbonara. I wish I'd seen your post earlier as Spaghi are not worth my time. Will take her to Al Sito as the dinner didn't exactly go according to plan.

Spaghi don't take bookings so we were there before 7pm to line up for a table. Waited a good 20 mins only to be told they weren't taking any more diners. And they close at 9pm!! What the hell is that about? How are they surviving on this village mentality? Even Ciao Italia who operate on a similar system don't close that early. And you're guaranteed a table, even if you have to wait a while.

Tried a Thai place, much to my horror, but they were fully booked (yay!). Had no choice but to attempt a shot at the Indian place across the corridor. Lady was very nice and gave us a table even though she said they were all booked cos it was my friend's birthday.

Was tasty enough but Chutney Garden is better value for money in my opinion.

Hey mincy you must have missed the discussion a few weeks ago. Oh yeah you were in love ;)

I did go twice and wasn't that impressed with anything but the decor (remember I don't like sweets). There bread selection and presentation was very average. From memory it was $8 for a baguette. I figured I wait a couple of months to get their act together and give it one more shot.
Overall they seem very amateurish to me. The website is neither here or there and 'Coming Soon' (especially when it becomes indefinite) is one my major pet hates.
I noticed a sign on the door that they will start opening on Saturdays but yet again 'Coming soon'.
It'll be good to get some feedback from a sweet expert (you) to balance out my general disappointment.

Ah I really am losing it. Must pay more attention!

So what did you end up buying?

I'm no sweet expert, I just like eating cake and cupcakes and Asian sweets :D my intention was to go for the cakes and pastries, might get a macaroon and see what's what. If there's still some left at the end of the day, that is. Gah, should've brought my camera with me!

$8 for a baguette seems to be the going price these days. I bought an egg baguette from Mod Cafe for exactly $8 the other day. Was pretty average.

^We had a love-in over the red velvet cake last week too Miensie :).

I was talking about that bakery on Hay St with someone who works near there this week and her comment was “The croissants are oily”, with an unimpressed face. She said it was always full though.

Incidentally, we were having lunch at Toms…something next door, I hate to say but it was quite dreadful, braised lamb which had been boiled to buggery and polenta that tasted like a smelly dish cloth. I’m not usually that hard to please either. The others seemed happy enough though, so maybe my meal was just an aberration.

I've been to the Bakery. I had a baguette, which was OK but nothing special. I've certainly eaten better bread in Perth (Chez Jean Claude for example). Actually, I can get a better baguette at a Cafe at Karrinyup.

I also had a strawberry tart which was very good. The Creme Patisserie was really smooth with plenty of real vanilla. The strawberry's were large and ripe, and the crust was a little hard from the refrigeration but still good.

Jackso you legend. How did I now know about this place? Must be living under a rock!! Just went down to CJC in West Leedie and the display looks much better than Sancho. Ended up buying craploads of bread, Ciabatta, Baguette ($3.60), Sourdough, Pretzel, Bagel. I munched through the pretzel and bagel in the car and they were both very nice. The bagels are just the way I like it, light and 'bready' not like a croissant. Haven't had a chance to try the rest but they all look good.
They also seem to have a large pastry/cake window as well. But i was so excited about the bread I didn't take a good look elsewhere.

Yes, I remembered the name but felt a bit bad writing a cutting review when SSC comes up so high on google searches. The chef came out after to ask how everything was, usually I would have said something, but it was a work lunch. You get taught in commercial cookery that the worst thing you can have happen is that a customer leaves unhappy without saying anything, so usually I would make an effort to complain.

It was nearly an hour between sitting down and getting our meal. It was nearly two hours by the time we’d been offered coffee and finished, which considering that their customers are mainly CBD workers with limited lunchtimes, is not the best. It’s also as cold as a frogs bum sitting in the alley in winter for that long, and I had a wool coat and scarf on.

Also, it probably only bothers me, but some places have Bentley TAFE written all over them. It might be coincidence that several of the dishes looked very familiar, I suppose. Some places use those Bentley dishes, but add their own touches and present it in a new way, which on the other hand, I find interesting because it shows the jib of the chefs creativity. But to use those exact dishes, presented the same way and then not even get them right, hm.

There were quite a few vegetarian options on their menu. I would have liked to order the Stinky Cheese Risotto from the specials, but find that much starch at lunchtime soporific. Some of their sides look good, like the Cauliflower Cheese and Braised Red Cabbage. They had a lot of risotto dishes on the menu, maybe that is why the meal took so long (someone had one) and maybe that is what they are good at.

Tut, i always get on the waffle-wagon when there are accounts to do.

Nah, I think it's good. You get a pretty fair and varied range of opinions on here so being honest about places is good practice cos then a lot of us get a better understanding of the place and what to expect. Plus you get to know which other SSCers have similar opinions/tastes to you so it's a good come-to option when you're out of them :)

I wouldn't discount a place 100% until you give them a second chance though. It could've been an off day although an hour's wait is just ridiculous. Reminds me of the Funtastico fiasco.

They had plastic blinds that could be used to seal off the area and presumably heat it, but they didn't have them down. There was a small indoor area, which was open as well though. Probably if we'd asked they would have put the blinds down, to at least cut the wind chill factor.

^I think there was a brie and cranberry one. There was a smoked salmon, cream cheese and capers. And chicken and avocado. That bread though, gosh, and they used butter not margarine. I haven't been there for ages, it'll prey on my mind now though.

It's a nice idea to have productive plants like strawberries in the pots, but they are all dead, there is not enough light there, it's too cold and windy. It's not a greenhouse more of an empty pot house. Not sure that it matters, it looks ok still as a pot house, but maybe it bothers them.

Maybe they might move it. It's a mystery why, but flowering plants in pots just don't grow in the shade here, whereas they will in somewhere like London, they have magnificent planter boxes on the shady side of buildings. What i don't get either, supposedly they got specialist horticultural advice, I wonder if it was a local.

^Good lord, plant torture! Are you being serious Jackso, or are you up to mischief? In case you are serious, Devil's Ivy is the one plant i've found that grows well without any natural light at all.

I've been meaning to put this in the landscape thread, Devil's Ivy in The Atrium on St Georges Tce. It must be a thing from the 1980's, because the Hyatt and the Lord Forrest Hotel in Bunbury have it growing in this same way as well. This would do well on the Greenhouse too, i'm actually itching to pull the last of the scraggly strawberries out and plant this instead.

Completely serious. They look great. My room needs some colour too, I recently painted the walls grey, and am yet to hang anything on the walls..

Kelli

It changes the whole feel of those buildings. And of a room too, to have something green in it. Is it a pure grey? What shade? I was just teasing about the plant torture as well, besides i've got a hedge which is the ultimate in plant torture and repression.

Devils Ivy will even grow in water. I've had one of mine in a vase of water since 2002. I just give it one of my multi vitamins every now and then, haha. Remarkable plant. You can just pinch a cutting from the Atrium as well :). My mum used to be the gardener at the Hyatt, a large proportion of her time was spent having to prune the triffids anyway, so its not such a crime. Actually, they might have cctv, so maybe not.

Live music revival planned for CBD
A series of free Friday night concerts featuring local musicians is set to wake up the sleepy city centre.

Perth CBD set for live music revival

It is an often-heard complaint that live music has been squeezed out of inner city Perth.

But with moves afoot to liven up the central business district, it is starting to reappear in unlikely places.

The latest addition to the urban live music calendar is a series of free Friday night concerts at the food court at retail centre Enex100.

The Friday Night Live series, which runs until the end of the month, will feature local musicians including Howie Morgan, Melody Whittle and James Sandon and ranges from jazz and blues to funk, soul and rock.

"With live music you really think Northbridge or Fremantle and a lot of suburban pubs have lifted their game recently," Morgan said.

"There are still a few live music venues in the city but it's generally hard to get people to stay there, especially on weekends."

Organisers hope to entice a range of people to the gigs, from those eager to kick off the weekend, to those looking for an after-work wind-down dinner and drink.

Next month, Forrest Place will host three days of jazz as part of the Winter Arts Season.

A marquee installed in the heart of the city will help transform the area into a New Orleans Jazz Club with nine performances on July 23, 24 and 26, courtesy of the Ellington Jazz Club and Perth Jazz Society.

Oh yes, really!? The company with a one word name, 10 letters, starting with a G and ending with a D? If so, my mum worked for you! I think we might have another one degree of separation as well, through the company with the three letter acronym on Bagot Rd.

I had to look it up, but Devil's Ivy is one of its common names and Pothos is its original latin name.

I finally got around to buying a wool jacket. 70% wool, 30% cashmere (so fairly soft). Nice lining in it. Bit longer than the black pea jacket from County Road that I was looking at.

I wonder of the space left in Wesley Quarter (murray st side) has been leased out yet. It would be nice to see another of the retailers from over east / over seas establish themselves there.

United Colours of Benetton perhaps? Dont really mind who, but the more variety the better. Plus Benetton always have good window displays/marketing..

Zara would be nice, but as far as I'm aware they're not even established in Australia so that would be very unlikely. American Apparel perhaps? They have stores in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, so surely they must have some plans to expanding into Perth and Brisbane.

Its next to Industrie and G-Star so its not going to be too upmarket. Ed Hardy will be opening directly across the road too. Maybe we will see some of the yet unseen brands open in Raine Square..

Hai homos, I see fashion has been a bit over represented in my thread over the last week or so.

Good news, burrata is now available in perth, not from italy but aussie made. I tried this brand when they were experimenting last year at a trade show in sydney and was quite impressed.

Herdsman fresh has it for 14.50 for a 200g tub, brand is paesanella. They had 2 left when I left, expiry 10/6. I plan on having mine tomorrow, loooove burrata
