While I was travelling throught Europe a couple of years ago I caught the train from Lucerne to Milan and thought it to be one of the most scenic trips I have ever taken by rail. It takes approximately 4 hours to complete the trip but it is every bit worthwhile. Here is a few photos of the scenery taken from inside the train. I apologise for the quality but I have a pretty basic camera and in no way claim to be a photographer. Feel free to post other rail trips you think might be scenic.

Apart from Rovos Rail, South Africa also has the Blue Train, as well as the Shongololo Express, which covers a great deal of Southern Africa, including Namibia, Zimbabwe and Tanzania.

I thought I would start a thread to share information or photos on particularly scenic railway lines from around the world. I do not know if this has been done before, please join in!

If there is also a scenic railway that does not see passenger trains it would still be good to see pictures.

I will start off with one that is not overly far from me which is the South Coast Line in New South Wales, Australia, which runs from Sydney to Wollongong and Kiama/Nowra.

Between Waterfall and Thirroul stations for much of the line it follows a band of small seaside towns next to the Pacific Ocean, also with the Illawarra Escarpment and plenty of bush nearby. Here is a shot of 6-car EMU passing between Stanwell Park and Coalcliff railway stations.

I will also look for pictures, but the following left a lasting impression on me:

1. The Metrorail line between Cape Town and Simonstown in South Africa with the Mountain on one side and the sea next to the tracks on the other
2. The line between Curitiba and Paranaqua in Brazil travelling through the rain forest and mountains
3. The line from Edinburgh to Perth in Scotland running over the Five railway bridge and passing St Andrews
4. The short line from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe to Livingstone in Zambia - passing over the railway bridge right next to the Victoria Falls
5. The Line from New York to Montreal passing through the country side next to all the lakes in Fall with the play of colours....

I will again look for the names of a line I recently travelled in Japan on a Hybrid Train (both diesel and batteries) through the mountains - it was excellent.

Regards

According to a voting among railway empolyees about the most Scenic railway in Sweden, the Iron Ore Railway between Kiruna and the border to Norway won by a big margin.

Hard to choose, in Slovakia it is probably Štrba-Tatry section, although area of High Tatras mountains has its own urban rail as well.

The best view on High Tatras could be from Štrba-Tatry /Poprad/ section:

For the enginnering achievement it might be section Banská Bystrica-Dolná Štubňa. On 41km long section there are 22 tunnels and 112 bridges.

The Tren a las Nubes (Train to the Clouds) is a train service in Salta Province of Argentina, that connects the Argentine Northwest with the border with Chile in the Andes mountain range, over 4,220 metres (13,850 ft) above mean sea level, the third highest railway in the world. Originally built for economic and social reasons, it is now of primarily touristic value as a heritage railway.
The train leaves once a week from General Belgrano station in the city of Salta for the 15 hour, 434 kilometre round trip to the viaduct La Polvorilla, located 4,220 metres (13,850 ft) meters above sea level. The curved viaduct is 224 metres long and 70 metres high. From Salta, the train enters first the Valle de Lerma and then the Quebrada del Toro before reaching the Puna. It is known as the Train of the Clouds because clouds can be often be seen around and under the bridges and slopes of the landscape through which the railway passes.
The railway line has 29 bridges, 21 tunnels, 13 viaducts, 2 spirals and 2 zigzags. Because of the design decision of not using a rack-and-pinion for traction, the route had to be designed to avoid steep grades. The zigzags allow the train to climb up driving back and forth parallel to the slope of the mountain.

The first picture is of the BNSF main line through Glacier National Park in Montana (USA). This is the main line between Minneapolis/St Paul and Seattle via Spokane.

The last picture is of the Cairns-Kuranda Scenic Railway operating west out of Cairns, Queensland (AUS).
