Putrajaya gears up to host N-Day celebrations

PUTRAJAYA: With less than three weeks to go before the administrative capital hosts this year’s National Day celebrations, preparations are under way to ensure that the occasion will be an unforgettable one.

Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the Putrajaya Corporation had promised that the 4.2km boulevard, which is to be the venue of the National Day parade, would be ready on time.

“Everything will be ready on time. The corporation is working hard to ensure the completion of the boulevard.

“We expect a minimum of 50,000 people to turn up to watch the parade in addition to the 20,000 participating in the march. This is because although we expected only 100,000 to come for the Putrajaya Carnival last weekend, police statistics showed that visitors numbered close to 400,000.

“So we must be ready. Although we want to encourage everyone to use public transport, I have instructed the corporation and the police to ensure there is enough parking for all the cars,” he told reporters after flagging off the Jalur Gemilang Merdeka motorcycle convoy from Taman Putra Perdana here yesterday.

The boulevard extends from the Prime Minister’s Office across the Seri Saujana and the Seri Gemilang bridges and is bordered by government offices, including the majestic new Palace of Justice and the Finance Ministry.

The design and landscaping of the boulevard was intended to celebrate the Malaysian “melting pot” and the diversity of racial cultures in the country.

Tengku Adnan also said the Putrajaya monorail system was expected to be running by the end of next year.

I think the Putrajay Boulevard is completed but not the buildings surrounding it. They at least need to complete the facade of the buildings first. I don't think it would be nice to have buildings U/C along the Putrajaya Boulevard.....;)

Most buildings along the boulevard already have their facade completed but I doubt the interior could be completed on time. Anyway they are really speeding things up! (which is good news) ;)

I really like the palace........I think it is the nicest Istana in Malaysia! Wish it would be opened to the public like Seri Perdana! :D

There is definitely traffic congestion in KL - shopping malls for example would be packed with people.

I went to Midvalley 3 years ago during Merdeka day and it took me 1 hour to enter the car park!!! :bleep:

Grand N-Day parade in the works

PUTRAJAYA: Some 300,000 visitors to the National Day parade on Aug 31 here will enjoy extraordinary sights and sounds.

Putrajaya’s inaugural National Day parade would be held along the 4.2km Putrajaya Boulevard which boasts several attractions, including the Prime Minister’s Department at one end and the newly completed International Convention Centre on the other.

The parade this year is seen as a historic event as it will be held for the first time at the Federal Government's administrative capital.

A VIP stage has been built in front of the Palace of Justice, the new judiciary complex in Precinct Three.

Students from Form 4 Alpha 1 of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Putrajaya 1 showing off their newly-made Jalur Gemilang at their school courtyard Thursday. With the support of their principal Puan Che Manis and class teacher Puan Siti Zaharah Bahran, 24 students spent two weeks and nearly RM1,000 to produce the 120 meter-long national flag. They hoped to have the feat recorded as the longest Jalur Gemilang ever made.--STARpic by RAJA FAISAL HISHAN.

Fronting the VIP stage area is the performance stage currently under construction.

The first rehearsal for the parade will be held on Aug 26 followed by subsequent rehearsals.

Some 12,000 people are expected to participate in the parade.

Gone are the days when the public was subjected to cramped conditions at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur as the boulevard offers a spacious area to view the parade.

The parade, seen as a farewell gesture to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad, will focus on Malaysia’s development between 1981 and this year.

Malaysia's MERDEKA DAY Countdown!

:cheers1: :cheers1: :cheers1: :cheers1: :cheers1: :cheers1:

10 days till Merdeka Day!!!

Please post any Merdeka pictures here (esp decor on skyscrapers). :)

Actually I wanted to post the picture of the huge Jalur Gemilang (Malaysia's Flag) that are hung on one side of Menara Telekom which could be the tallest ever made. This flag is about 30 stories high but they sort of like removed it after a few days! Reason: unknown :(

There is a picture of it in The Star (Monday 18th Aug) edition - front page. My scanner still isn't working and it would be great if anyone could scan it and post it here :)

Giant flag damaged by weather

Source ~ The Star

Aug 21, KUALA LUMPUR: Strong winds and heavy rain last weekend damaged the Jalur Gemilang put up on Menara Telekom, said Telekom Malaysia Berhad corporate affairs general manager Kairul Annuar Mohamed Zamzam.

He said the bad weather caused stitches to come undone and tore up the flag, leaving intact only the yellow crescent and 14-point star.

“It was not just a huge piece of cloth. It was pieces of cloth sewn together and it hung downwards freely without anything to hold it,” he said at Menara Telekom yesterday.

Kairul Annuar dispelled queries that someone had tore up the 30.48m by 121.92m flag.

“It was not torn by anyone. There is no sabotage,” he said.

He said 30 workers of an advertising agency hired by the company removed the remaining parts of the flag on Tuesday evening.

“We are mending the flag now. It will take at least three or four days to stitch and put it up again,” he said, adding that at least 50 people were required to do the job.

He said the flag, which was made of taffeta nylon, was placed on the 55-storey building as a lead up to the National Day celebration.

Earlier, Kairul Annuar told a press conference that an awards ceremony called Anugerah Erti Merdeka (The Meaning of Independence Awards) would be aired on TV3 on Aug 28.

Winners of Telekom Malaysia’s Erti Merdeka campaign, which featured poetry writing, lyric writing and website design contests, would be given awards during the ceremony.

The contests, which ran from May 19 to July 14, were open to students aged between 13 and 22 years.

Shortlisted lyrics, which have been composed into songs, would be presented by top local artistes including Nora, Siti Sarah and Fazley.

Dry run of parade in Putrajaya goes well

By GEETHA KRISHNAN

PUTRAJAYA: The dry run for the National Day Parade here proceeded smoothly yesterday, with participants putting on an impressive show.

A total of 22,640 participants will take part in the parade, held for the first time at the federal administrative capital.

Five thousand participants will march 1.3km along the newly completed 4.2km Boulevard while 4,000 others will participate in field events.

Parade and field events organising committee chairman Datuk Muhammad Mohd Noor said the parade would last two hours, while an air show planned for the parade would last 10 minutes.

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2003/8/27/nation/p8dryrun.jpg
READY TO ROLL: Participants performing during the rehearsal in front of the Putrajaya Corporation headquarters Tuesday. A total of 22,640 participants will take part in this year's parade, to be held in the administrative capital for the first time.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Syed Putra Jamalullail, who is scheduled to arrive at 8am that day, will take his place at the VIP stage in front of the Palace of Justice with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad and other dignitaries.

The King will inspect an honour guard of the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment, followed by a performance by 6,000 Malaysian Citizens Symphony Group members.

Kicking off the parade will be the “Malaysia 1981 to 2003” contingent, displaying the nation’s success over the period. A total of 63 contingents, 22 brass bands, 18 floats, 20 aircraft and 220 vehicles are involved in the parade.

Four large LCD screens will be mounted along the Boulevard for the public.

“We estimate a crowd of 300,000 for this year’s celebrations and have allocated 10,000 parking lots in areas surrounding the Palace of Justice on a first-come, first-served basis,” Muhammad said, adding that Express Rail Link services to Putrajaya would start at 5am, with trains running every 15 minutes.

Putrajaya Corporation, the local authority for the city, is providing 51 buses to ferry the public from various pick-up points to the Boulevard.

Its corporate services department deputy director Norhazifa Mohamed said among the pickup points are the ERL Station here and the KTM Komuter Station in Serdang.

Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd will also extend the operating hours for its KLIA Transit services until 2am on Aug 31 in conjunction with the National Day celebration at Merdeka Square here.

Plenty in Putrajaya for N-Day weekend
By GEETHA KRISHNAN
http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2003/8/m_pg04monument.JPG
The Millennium Monument being built in Precinct 2.
MERDEKA fever is quite apparent in Putrajaya more so as the federal administration capital is bracing itself for its first National Day parade.

The parade will be held on the boulevard that stretches 4.2km from the Prime Minister’s Department to the newly-completed International Convention Centre where the OIC (Organisation of Islamic Countries) conference will be held in October.

“Those participating in the parade will march a distance of 3km covering, among others, Dataran Gemilang and Dataran Putrajaya while 14 floats are expected to take part in the procession,” Putrajaya Corporation corporate services department senior assistant director Amin Abdullah said on a visit to the boulevard recently.

A permanent VIP stage has been built in front of the Palace of Justice while a temporary stage for National Day performances is being erected in front of the Putrajaya Corporation headquarters which itself is still under construction. The building faces the Palace of Justice.

A host of other events leading to the big day have also been planned.

An exhibition entitled The Nation’s Independence History will be held from Friday to Sunday at the newly-opened Precinct 16 Multi-Purpose Hall from 10am to 6pm. It will also be the venue of the Pekan Sehari until Sept 1.

Malaysia Hari Ini intends to set up a temporary studio here to provide live coverage on events held on National Day.

The hall has a seating capacity of 700 and is located within a neighbourhood community centre that will have a library, food court, post office, swimming pool and market when it is fully operational.

Souq at Dataran Putra in Precinct 1 will host a crafts exhibition and demonstration from Friday to Sept 1 between 10am and 6pm.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad is scheduled to launch the Millennium Monument in Precinct 2 on Saturday.

The monument will hold a time capsule containing the nation’s historic developments.

On the same day, Taman Botani and Taman Wetland Putrajaya will join forces to hold the first Merdeka Cycle N’ Hunt from 7am to 1pm. Taman Botani will also kick off a photography exhibition on plants and insects. Scheduled to end on Sept 7, the exhibition will be held daily from 10am to 6pm.

The newly-opened Agricultural Heritage Park in Precinct 16 will play host to a cooking demonstration and sale of traditional cakes from 10am to 6pm.

http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2003/8/m_pg04putrajaya.JPG
Ongoing work at the Putrajaya Boulevard to get it ready for the parade.

Meanwhile, Ambang Merdeka where fireworks are the highlight will be held at the SK Putrajaya Precinct 8 field on Saturday between 9pm and midnight.

Events scheduled for Sunday include a drawing and colouring competition at the Precinct 8 Multi Purpose Hall from 8am to 1pm and Remote Control Car Competition at the SK Putrajaya Precinct 8 field between 3pm and 6pm. A similar competition will be held on Sept 1 from 8am to 6pm.

The focus will also be on Taman Botani where a sand art competition will be held from 10am to noon and 2pm to 4pm,while a water telematch is at 4pm.

As a finale to the celebrations in Putrajaya, the biennial Putrajaya Angling Competition will be held on Sept 1 for the first time at the newly- opened Central Wetland in Precinct 2. More than 1,000 anglers are expected to test their fishing skills this time

KL aims to be brightest capital

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s capital city is set to make a national as well as a world record tomorrow by being the largest-lit city at any one time.

At the stroke of 7pm, some 100 buildings in the city will be lighted up simultaneously, ahead of the countdown event that will be held at the Dataran Merdeka here for the National Day celebrations.

Tourism Malaysia said National Day eve this year promises to be a spectacular affair with events scheduled from 5pm to midnight when the nation enters its 46th year of independence.

The bid by Kuala Lumpur City Hall to enter the Malaysia Book of Records and the Guinness Book of World Records will be among the record-breaking attempts that will make it an exciting event.

About 30 minutes before the city lights up, 18-year-old Jayabarathi Letchemanah, daughter of ’Mighty Man’ R. Letchemanah, will attempt to pull 4.8 tonnes of TD2000 vintage cars with her hair along Jalan Raja, opposite the Sultan Abdul Samad Building.

Her feat would enter the national record book as the “Female Pulling the Heaviest Weight.”

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad, his deputy Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and their wives are expected to arrive at Dataran Merdeka at 10.45pm, before the start of a record-breaking harmonica concert.

The 20-minute show by 460 harmonica players is an attempt to enter the Malaysia Book of Records as “The Most Number of Harmonica Players Performing At Any One Time.”

After the concert, Dr Mahathir will receive 100 achievers whose names have been entered in the record books, including Datuk Malik Mydin who recently became the first Malaysian to swim the English Channel and singer Siti Nurhaliza, the recording artiste with the most number of awards.

Tourism Malaysia said in a statement, the National Day countdown celebrations will also feature cultural dances as well as performances by local artistes Too Phat, Datuk Sharifah Aini, Ogy Ahmad Daud and Rem.

As in previous years, Dr Mahathir will lead the countdown and proclaim ‘Merdeka’ seven times at the stroke of midnight.

All set for N-Day event 400,000 to watch parade in Putrajaya

BY SUSAN TAM

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2003/8/30/nation/n_1putrajaya.jpg

PUTRAJAYA: It will be a historic moment for the 400,000 people expected to turn up here tomorrow for the 46th National Day parade, which is set to be the largest event held in the country.
Culture, Arts and Tourism Minister Datuk Paduka Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir said the two-hour event will be held for the first time in the nation’s administrative centre.

“All components of the celebrations will be larger, in terms of the number of participants and the instruments to be used in the Malaysian Drum Symphony.

“There will be 3,000 drummers compared to last year’s 1,000 participants.

“The formation participants have also increased from 500 to over 2,000 people,” he said after a full dress rehearsal yesterday.

He said the participants would march along the newly completed 4.5km-long Boulevard from the Putrajaya Convention Centre, passing the Palace of Justice and several ministries, towards the Prime Minister’s department.

Abdul Kadir encouraged Malaysians living in or near Putrajaya to be “part of history”, adding that a total of 22,640 participants would be taking part in the event.

“They can also be a part of the festivities by catching the live telecast shown on the eve and the day itself,” he said.

Asked about contingency plans for the event, as the day’s rehearsal had faced a short but heavy downpour, he said the organising committee was experienced in conducting such events and would be prepared for any situation.

He also encouraged Malaysians to stay up and not sleep on the eve of the National Day, so that they can witness the historic occasion when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad shouts “Merdeka” seven times at the countdown celebrations in Dataran Merdeka.

He added that the newly arranged Negaraku would be introduced for the first time during the countdown.

“Although the changes are minimal, Malaysians will be able to show their patriotism by appreciating this version of the national anthem,” he said.

Abdul Kadir also said the event would pay tribute to Dr Mahathir by showcasing the country’s development and progress during the years that he has been Prime Minister – from 1981 to 2003.

Maybe you dun come to KL often enuf lar! ;)

Although this Merdeka not as many buildings litted up compare to lets say year 2000 but still many buildings that previously wasn't litted up did.

Notable examples are:

- Menara LUTH (fist time litted so brightly!)
- Bangunan PNB
- Westin KL (for the first time!!!)
- Menara Keck Seng
- Wisma Hasil (3 builldings litted up!)
- Bangunan DBKL (This time with flood lights which changes colours!)
- Menara ExxonMobil
- Phileo Avenue (4 buildings litted up!)
- Bangunan Angkasaraya
- Nikko Hotel
- Menara Dayabumi (last time used to litted up everynight but has been 'dormant' for a number of years)
- Bangunan Bukit Aman (with multi-colour lights)
- Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan (newcomer)
- Menara Telekom (newcomer)
- Bangunan Public Bank (the one next to Wisma Tun Sambanthan)
- Wisma Telekom Semarak
- Bangunan Bernama
- Chinese Assembly Hall
- Desa Petaling condos (many condos like Amandesa etc.)
- ......I could have missed out some as I recite this list from top of my head. These are the ones I saw.......;)

Amongst the 'heroes' that litted up everynight are:

- Menara Maybank
- PTT (this time with 'Paddlepop' colours!) :D
- Menara Public Bank
- Bangunan AmFinance
- Menara Maxis
- JW Mariott
- Menara KL
- Istana Budaya
- Balai Seni Lukis Negara
- Mont' Kiara condos (many buildings)
- Sri Tiara
- Masjid Negara (with new very bright lightings)
- Empire Tower (definitely needs brighter lighting!)
- ......and lots more ;)

Too bad I've only got pictures of buildings around KLCC :(

Anyway I am sure there are exceptions for big flags but generally dun sit or put it on the ground (esp in front of people).

That is why when the prefects or scouts raising the flag on the flag pole, did ya notice they put the flag on thier shoulders? This is to prevent the flag from touching the ground. ;)

;)

Maybe you dun come to KL often enuf lar!

Although this Merdeka not as many buildings litted up compare to lets say year 2000 but still many buildings that previously wasn't litted up did.

Notable examples are:

- Menara LUTH (fist time litted so brightly!)
- Bangunan PNB
- Westin KL (for the first time!!!)
- Menara Keck Seng
- Wisma Hasil (3 builldings litted up!)
- Bangunan DBKL (This time with flood lights which changes colours!)
- Menara ExxonMobil
- Phileo Avenue (4 buildings litted up!)
- Bangunan Angkasaraya
- Nikko Hotel
- Menara Dayabumi (last time used to litted up everynight but has been 'dormant' for a number of years)
- Bangunan Bukit Aman (with multi-colour lights)
- Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan (newcomer)
- Menara Telekom (newcomer)
- Bangunan Public Bank (the one next to Wisma Tun Sambanthan)
- Wisma Telekom Semarak
- Bangunan Bernama
- Chinese Assembly Hall
- Desa Petaling condos (many condos like Amandesa etc.)
- ......I could have missed out some as I recite this list from top of my head. These are the ones I saw.......

Amongst the 'heroes' that litted up everynight are:

- Menara Maybank
- PTT (this time with 'Paddlepop' colours!)
- Menara Public Bank
- Bangunan AmFinance
- Menara Maxis
- JW Mariott
- Menara KL
- Istana Budaya
- Balai Seni Lukis Negara
- Mont' Kiara condos (many buildings)
- Sri Tiara
- Masjid Negara (with new very bright lightings)
- Empire Tower (definitely needs brighter lighting!)
- ......and lots more

Too bad I've only got pictures of buildings around KLCC

I think this list shows that there are many buildings which were litted up (much more than normal evenings). There are more buildings specified in my other replies ;)
