A BMW vendeu, o ano passado, um milhão e meio de automóveis em Angola, apesar de não possuir, então, qualquer empresa de assistência às viaturas compradas. Talvez por isso, o conhecido fabricante de automóveis alemães pretende nos próximos anos tornar-se num dos líderes do mercado angolano na venda de automóveis com abertura de uma representação oficial da marca no país, que ficará localizada na rua da Missão, em Luanda.

Ontem mesmo, foram já inauguradas as primeiras instalações, que incluem com uma oficina de apoio equipada com tecnologia de última geração, equiparada às demais existentes a nível internacional. A BMW Angola dispõe também de uma loja para a venda de peças e contará em breve com um estaleiro e um centro de formação profissional, no município de Viana, onde procederá a formação de técnicos na sua maioria angolanos.

Para a concretização do projecto, numa primeira fase foram investidos doze milhões de dólares e serão criados 100 postos de trabalhos directos. A BMW, que era representada anteriormente pela União Comercial de Automóveis, muda agora de estratégia, em função do objectivo de o fabricante pretende obter na região Austral de África, em particular, em Angola, de liderança do mercado automóvel nos próximos anos. Brevemente, será aberta uma representante na província de Benguela.

Perguntado a Tony de Almeida, administrador da empresa, sobre quais eram as perspectivas de venda dos automóveis, a resposta chegou rápida: “Está tudo vendido, estes quatro que estão aqui mais outros quatro que estão lá atrás.” A reacção à chegada da marca a Angola foi de tal modo entusiástica que, em finais do corrente chegarão mais 10 unidades.

E, a respeito das matrículas, isso sempre foi assim. Pelo q me lembro, qdo ainda vivia no K.Sul, em 1996/97/98, tinha lá carros com a matrícula BG, LBA, etc.
Essa lei entrou em actividade depois de ter "mais carros do que letras" da série "AAB, AAY, AAF, AIA" etc.

It is indeed a Bentley Flying Spur owned by a chap whose office is about 20 feet from mine here in Luanda.. indeed this pic is taken on the corner of the street with our offices on.

Are you sure? without them you would be in Lagos...and believe me, driving there is pure horror...I never forget having stuck in traffic there, believe me or not: 1km 4 hours!

In the medium-term Luanda has to get rid of the ugly blue small buses which block roads and really look flimsy...and it needs to install a proper public transport which was already existent before the war, btw.


A combination of broader roads (I have noticed that roads are really very narrow because Luanda is an old city and was not built to cope with the influx of millions of people..but just for 500 000 people), more multi-lane highways (5-6 lanes on each side) and above all a functioning & reliable metro system will ease congestion a lot but all this will run into billions of dollars to build and an additional sum to keep it all well mantained..

No, I don't think so. There are 4 ferraris photographed (2 F430, 1 360 and 1 599) in Botswana, one of the richest countries in the continent. There are
two (F430 and California) ferraris in Mozambique, one of the poorest countries. Until now, Angola has only two Ferraris spotted. There are many others african countries above the Sahara where you can see, eventually, such expensive rides rolling. But got a Ferrari in these countries is like got a Bugatti in Europe, so it's a good way to estimate how good things are when we talk about expensive cars.
UAE and Kuwait are other worlds, excellent examples for Angola and Nigeria (not in democracy :lol:). I've never been there, but it might be crazy.

No, I don't think so. There are 4 ferraris photographed (2 F430, 1 360 and 1 599) in Botswana, one of the richest countries in the continent. There are
two (F430 and California) ferraris in Mozambique, one of the poorest countries. Until now, Angola has only two Ferraris spotted. There are many others african countries above the Sahara where you can see, eventually, such expensive rides rolling. But got a Ferrari in these countries is like got a Bugatti in Europe, so it's a good way to estimate how good things are when we talk about expensive cars.
UAE and Kuwait are other worlds, excellent examples for Angola and Nigeria (not in democracy :lol:). I've never been there, but it might be crazy.

it is one single road! and it looked fenced off, btw.
I can´t think of ANY other African country that has built so many kilometres of new road across the country in such a comparatively brief span of time....and the work is ongoing. especially given after three decades of war, virtually all roads disappeared or were in a utter state of disrepair....even many bloggers say that more and more roads get better and better...so it is really not as bad as that - especially if you compare it with other African countries. Tens of thousands of kiometres of new road are still u/c throughout the vastness of the country.

Sorry Matthias, you got me wrong. When I said "I've never been there", I was referring me to UAE and Kuwait. Yeah, I've never been in Angola as well, but I said there were only two ferraris SPOTTED and it was right.

Otherwise, obviously there's a huge possibility to have many others in Angola, just like anywhere else in the world. You might know, if people don't see it, they don't believe it, this is it. The amount of supecar pictures determines how often they are in your country, because nowdays everyone has a cellphone, everyone has a camera. Tell me, How many angolians have ever seen a ferrari? If you say to them that it's common, if you say to them there are tens of ferraris and lamborghinis they'll want pictures or any other thing to prove that, Am I right?

That's why I support this kind of thread - reason of my post "don't let this thread die" - to people see and realize Africa - or part of it - is giving the first steps to the development of their national capital. But don't tell me ferraris are common in Angola, because it's impossible. Angola is very expensive to live and those cars are restricted to the super rich.

BTW, how many commercials about Africa do you regularly watch on TV? Compare that number with commcercials displaying Asia and other parts of the world.

Apart from that, how many African Al Jazeeras are there? Media is more or less an instrument of power in order to mould people in a certain manner, in the West media organs are said to be "free and fair", I call it intelligent and subtle manipulation if one doesn´t display a certain alertness of mind. Only empty-headed humans beings can fully believe what the media tells them. Al Jazeera has joined the bandwagon by creating its own media organ. Some people say that it is a mouthpiece of the Qatari royal family, this might be the case but so what....most Western influential media houses are also owned by highly influential and capitalist interests (several of them are extremely wealthy family clans, too) that look to push though their agenda and influence the populace very intelligently.
When will Africa understand that it is all a big game and just join the rat race???

Germany. Unfortunately, many people here have a highly distorted image of Africa: either it is very gloomy (the standard clichés) or it is romantic: Africa - a "country" full of safari, wilderness and thrilling adventure. The later is fueled by regular TV films that are mostly produced in South Africa and Namibia and which bear weird titles like "Johanna und der Buschpilot" (translated: "Johanna and the bushpilot") or "Afrika, mon amour". The latter doesn´t need any translation, I think.
