New RM2mil attraction at Kek Lok Si

PENANG: The 115-year-old Kek Lok Si Temple in Air Itam here now boasts a new attraction – the RM2mil Chun Thee Bodhisattva Hall.

Situated next to the Kuan Yin (Goddess of Mercy) statue complex, the hall was opened yesterday. More than 1,000 devotees and about 80 monks from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malaysia attended the ceremony.

The hall features a wooden Chun Thee Bodhisattva (18-arm Buddha Bhagavati) statue carved in China.

Temple abbot Rev Seck Jit Heng said they started rebuilding the Chun Thee Bodhisattva Hall about three years ago after demolishing the original shrine, which had become dilapidated.

SPECIAL DAY: Monks walking to the temple for the opening ceremony in Penang Friday. Note the pillars around the Kuan Yin statue being constructed for the shelter project.

“The new hall was rebuilt using donations from the public,” he told reporters.

On another matter, Rev Seck said the construction of a shelter over the 30.2m-high Kuan Yin statue was targeted for completion by 2008.

Funded by public donations, the multi-million-ringgit project started in 1999.

Rev Seck said the annual lighting-up ceremony of the temple for Chinese New Year would be held on Jan 24.

Thousands of red and yellow lanterns and multi-coloured bulbs will be lit up all around the temple grounds to usher in the Year of the Dog.

read from the chinese newspaper, the collecting funds actually still not enough to built the shelter. But they still have to carry out the projects.
