Art Deco/Art Moderne

Style Definition
Art Deco and Art Moderne are two ends of a continuum, forming a style with roots in the verticality of Gothic architecture but leaning toward the simplicity of modernism. As its name implies, Art Deco uses more decoration while Art Moderne buildings tend to have smoother, streamlined shapes.

Both Deco and Moderne use setbacks to reduce building mass and to emphasize verticality. Unlike "Wedding Cake" buildings, their shapes recede from the street gracefully, not in tiers but in gentler and more carefully positioned steps. Limestone is the most common cladding material, with brick facades common in Art Deco.

Although Art Deco are based on Egyptian design but Sunway Pyramid doesn't have the 'streamlined' characteristics of art deco which is very important. The mall is a 'direct copy' of the Egyptian design ;)

Art Deco

Timeline

The period termed "art deco" manifested itself roughly between the two world wars, or 1920 to 1939. Many actually stretch this period back to 1900 and even as far as the late 1950's, but work of this time is generally considered to be more of an influence to the Art Deco style, or having been influenced by the style. As with many other art movements, even work of today is still being influenced by the past.

This period of design and style did not just affect architecture, but all of the fine and applied arts as well. Furniture, sculpture, clothing, jewelry and graphic design were all influenced by the Art Deco style.

Common themes

So what distinguishes this style from all of the rest? Basically it was a "modernization" of many artistic styles and themes from the past. You can easily detect in many examples of Art Deco the influence of Far and Middle Eastern design, Greek and Roman themes, and even Egyptian and Mayan influence. Modern elements included echoing machine and automobile patterns and shapes such as stylized gears and wheels, or natural elements such as sunbursts and flowers.

_________________________________________________________________

The Art Deco Era

During the period between the two World Wars, an eclectic design style developed that later became known as Art Deco. The name was derived from the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs Industriels et Modernes, held in Paris, which celebrated living in the modern world. Today, "Art Deco" is used to refer to a mix of styles from the 1920s and 1930s.

The Art Deco era was one of contradictions. Through the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression of the 1930s, the Art Deco style infused the everyday world with an elegant style of cool sophistication. Singers and songwriters entertained audiences through the new medium of radio, and Hollywood musicals offered the hope of better times and a temporary escape from daily troubles. Travel was in the news with ocean liners racing the Atlantic and trains crossing continents, as speed became a metaphor for modern times.

What characterizes Art Deco design? The architecture and applied arts of the period reveal a varied mix. However, most share the hallmarks of geometry and simplicity, often combined with vibrant colors and simple shapes that celebrate the rise of commerce and technology. From luxurious objects made from exotic materials to mass produced, streamlined items available to a growing middle class, the world of Art Deco represents a "graciousness of form" from a simpler time

The Empire State Building, finished in 1931-32, ended the era of Art Deco skyscrapers. The building's tiered structure, reminiscent of the Egyptian and Aztec pyramids, reflects the popular skyscraper style of the period. The building is topped with a mast for mooring dirigibles, an expression of the machine age and its focus on transportation.

Interior Design during the Art Deco era reflected a unified approach. Indeed, the line between Art Deco interior design and industrial design is often difficult to distinguish, with many of the era's top industrial designers and architects often designing interiors as well. Many of the furnishings incorporate industrial materials such as glass and metal and were designed to create a cohesive environment reminiscent of a fine-tuned machine.

Industrial Design made a name for itself during the Art Deco era. During the 1930s, industrial design consultants were commissioned by manufacturing companies to produce a variety of goods. Influenced by efforts to develop a more aerodynamic automobile, industrial designers adopted streamlining for a number of objects. Made from the latest materials, such as plastics, chrome and aluminum, domestic goods had a modern, high-speed look and were available to everyone due to mass production.

The popularity of Art Deco has seen a resurgence in the last ten years and it is predicted to continue to attract an even larger following. Collectors from every walk of life are seeking the "Art Deco" look and are paying premium prices to acquire the pieces of their dreams. There appears to be a new "old" movement. Investors are encouraged to take a serious look at this genre of period pieces.

_________________________________________________________________

Art Deco Style:

Art Deco is widely used in many areas as a decoration style, such as architecture, interiors, furnishing, fine arts, handmade crafts, posters, and industrial design. If one is looking for an appropriate word to describe overall Art Deco as a design style, 'Speed' would be the best word for it. "During the Great Depression, a second Art Deco period, buildings usually have very little ornamentation and have a very flat, machine-like look "(Klunk.2). In fact, Art Deco was influenced by the modern art movements of Cubism, Futurism, and Constructivism; however, it also took some ideas from the ancient geometrical design styles, such as Egypt, Assyria and Persia. Art Deco designers use stepped forms, rounded corners, triple- striped decorative elements and black decoration quite a lot. The most important thing is that they are all in geometrical order, and simple formats. With the increasing of machine power, Art Deco also used machine- like materials.

Art deco usually have streamlined elements and geometric design......(read the definition I posted earlier on Art Deco). As for Neo-Classical.....well......it is a revival of classical style....meaning there would be elaborate pillars and architectural elements like cornices and mantel. 'Neo' in Neo-Cassical meaning 'new'....so it is 'New Classical' ;)

Neo-Classical is modern Classical ,which is less ornate than 'traditional' Classical style buildings.Neo-Classical was partially influenced by the Modern Movement.

One interesting thing I noted is than many Neo-Classical buildings in SEA are mixed ,with some Art Deco elements ,like the Kepple Railway Station and the Family & Juvenile Court here.

The Supreme Court and The Ogilvy Centre are examples of 'true' Neo-Classical in Singapore.

Err... this is actually the Cenotaph lah, to be specific. :)

From the net:

CENOTAPH

The Cenotaph stands north of the Pavilion on a 7 stepped rectangular base. It measures 45 ft high. The granite structure was built in 1921 to commemmorate the fallen troops in WWI, later the names of those who fell in WWII and the Emergency were added to the roll of honour.
The Cenotaph was originally placed at Victoria Avenue (now called Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin) near the KL Railway Station. It was taken apart piece by piece in November 1961 and reassembled at its present site when the National Monument was built.

A sign outside it says 'Welcome to Malaysia'.The only place which you can enter Malaysia without a passport (it sits on Malaysian land).:D

Of course you need passport to enter Malaysia itself.;)

Singapore Railway Station ,built in 1932 in a unique blend of Art Deco and Neo-Classical.

Sounds exactly like Golden Mile Complex in Singapore.

It is actually very well designed, very clean and nice. The back is like a giant staircase, all units get equal amount of sunshine, wind and same views. The back is entirely balconies.

But apartment owners ended up adding awnings, covers and structures to their units, spoiling the entire back facade. :bash:

Morever, it isn't very well maintained, not cleaned. Now it looks like slums on a slope! :puke:

It is. :D You should try it. If I find myself in Nando's I will always order half chicken, with chips and rice as the side dish.

N for the chicken, order extra hot peri peri chicken for 1 quarter n the other quarter make it lemon n herb. Superb combination. One side of mild feeling, and the other one will blow your tongue away. Oh yes. Then mix with extra hot peri peri sauce n garlic sauce as well...cool it down with ice lemon tea. Make it 2 glass.

Definitely you will coming back for more.

Though the best Nando's I taste before will be in MidValley. The one near Puduraya is not that nice actually.

Baq > I could assure you that the Capitol, Cathay and Colliseum are all not Art Deco. Capitol and Cathay are kinda in those 50s style while Colliseum are neo-Classical. StarHill Centre is neo-classical as well ;)

As for Odeon Penang I am not too sure if it is recladded as I could see 2 flagpoles there. But as far as the pictures are concerned....it isn't art deco :)

Stunning Art Deco cinemas in KL are the ( now demolished  ) Pavillion Theatre and Odeon Cinema. Federal is kinda like a fusion of Art Deco with Modernist ;)

Yeah, at times it’s quite refreshing to look at Art Deco. :) Wonder how the interior looks like…

EKRAN House (Wisma EKRAN)

Designed by AO Coltman of Booty and Edwards, this building was constructed in 1937. Originally know as the Anglo-Oriental Building, it was later taken over by the Malaysian Mining Corporation. Architect Chen Voon Fee renovated the building in 1988 for use by Mahkota College.

The building is an excellent example of Art Deco construction with extensive use of Art Deco elements and ornamentation, characteristic of the style. Situated on the corner of Jalan Tangsi and Jalan Parlimen, it has a double frontage of two asymmetrical wings. The curved corner of the building houses the main entrance. Two prominent pylons with flagpoles on top flank the entry. Projecting from these pylons is a concrete canopy shading the entrance. Observe the decorative grooved pattern around the perimeter belt between the colonnade and windows.

During renovation, the internal lower roof was replaced by a reinforced concrete floor. This created a usable space in the core of the building. A ring of corridors, which wrap around the three-storey atrium, links the internal rooms. The building is currently owned and occupied by EKRAN Berhad.
