Jo November 2nd, 2003, 07:12 PM Great pix as always :okay:
I never knew they would put a large screen tv at BigC. Also never thought about the one at Siam Discovery Center.. is it new also?
RafflesCity November 2nd, 2003, 07:15 PM I'm glad that they restored the interior of MBK. It was kinda drab 4 years ago.
But my favourite is Siam Discovery. It has a nice outdoor plaza and the place feels hip and cool.:guns1:
kiku99 November 2nd, 2003, 07:21 PM Siam Discovery is cool. MBK doesn't look that nice but it sure is a great place for bargain shopping.

I don't think so., Because u can also find the "no photograp" sign at every entrances. I believes thats about the copy-right of the interior-design stuff...IMO:
BKKinTO November 3rd, 2003, 05:21 PM Big Thanks to Chad. Yeah! I asked my friend to take a photo in Gaysorn Plaza for me.he said photos are not allowed.
Jo January 16th, 2004, 12:42 PM Has anyone been to Pratunam Complex yet? Some photos or words on how it is would be much appreciated :)

Too bad, many malls don't allow photographs. but i am sure they are not that strict though. because i remember some of my female friends used to take photos inside Seacon Square.

I've never been to a mall over 3 stories:|
Jo January 17th, 2004, 02:16 AM Oh really? So does that mean LA malls are more spread out and rarely taller than 3 storeys?
BKKinTO January 17th, 2004, 02:34 AM Yes,malls here in Toronto also.No more than 3 floors.
Jo January 17th, 2004, 02:50 AM Oh okay.. sounds strange but maybe the have studied consumer behaviour and found it doesn't make sense to build them taller!?
Chad January 17th, 2004, 04:41 AM Yep, now malls are getting bigger and taller.....for Example this 2 malls which situated in the heart of the city ; Pratunam Center contains 14 storey of shopping center and it's neighbor ; Platinum Fashion Mall which will rise 12 storey up.......What an upscale!!!

kiku99 April 27th, 2004, 04:37 AM Work on the the Ratchadamnoen master plan in which the inner part of the old Rattanakosin area will be turned into a tourist attraction, gets under way in June.
The Office of National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) which oversees the plan, better known as the Champs Elysee project, yesterday asked the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to submit its infrastructure development plans and budget proposal for approval in June.
It will be the team's first meeting after the government approved the project early this year.
The BMA would be responsible for sewage system improvement, building six underground walkways under Ratchadamnoen avenue, refurbishing pavements at tourist spots such as Khao San road and Thanon Sib Sam Harng road in Bang Lamphu, and conserving historic buildings on Tanao road.
Utis Kaotien, senior policy adviser from the NESDB, said the first five years of the project would involve basic infrastructure development, pavement refurbishing, and canal restoration.
In the second five-year phase the pedestrian walkways would be built.
Some tenants would be asked to leave their premises or turn to businesses to serve tourism.
But Mr Utis said building facades would be kept.
The NESDB expected the Ratchadamnoen master plan to be fully implemented in the next 15 years.
The Royal Hotel would be upgraded into a five-star hotel and Thevej Insurance building would become a three-star hotel.
The northern part of Klong Lod which includes tourist attractions such as Wat Ratchanatda and Wat Thep Thida would become a route for canal cruises.
Three subway routes woud run from Huay Kwang to the Bank of Thailand in Bang Khun Prom; from Hua Lampong to Chinatown and the National Stadium to Ratchadamnoen.

Chad May 27th, 2004, 12:23 AM Central Pattana to open 10th mall
Plan to dominate all major capital districts
Nondhanada Intarakomalyasut
Central Pattana Plc (CPN), Thailand's largest retail property developer, is looking at opening its 10th shopping centre in Bangkok.
The new location could be opened in 2006, almost at the same time as Central Plaza Rama IX, currently under construction.
Naris Chueyklin, the company's chief financial officer, revealed the plan as he outlined CPN's target of least three new shopping centres within the next few years.
With the two new malls, the company would be able to raise its share of retail space in the capital to 37% in 2007, up from 31% at present.
``We want to dominate all the major districts in Bangkok before expanding into the provinces,'' said Mr Naris, who did not disclose details of the new projects.
However, CPN is considering new developments in Khon Kaen or Chon Buri or both by the end of next year. The firm already operates the Central Festival Centre Pattaya and Central Airport in Chiang Mai.
Funding for the new projects would be generated by a bond issue worth 2.5 billion baht backed by 2.5 billion baht in cash flow.
A minimal amount would come from financial institutions, he said.
In the first quarter of this year, CPN generated 341 million baht in net profit, up 12% from the same period last year. It expects to generate at least 5-6% growth from rental and service revenue this year, down from 9% growth last year.
With the opening of Central Plaza Rama IX, another new site in Bangkok and the two projects in the provinces, the company would control almost one million square metres of retail space.
CPN holds a retail space market share of 31% followed by The Mall with 16%, Future Park Rangsit with 12% and Seacon Square with 8%.
CPN's current properties include Central Plaza Lat Phrao, Central Plaza Rarm Intra, Central Plaza Pin Klao, Central Festival in Pattaya, Central Plaza Rama III, Central Airport Plaza Chiang Mai, Central City Bang Na, Central Plaza Rama II, Central World Plaza and Rattanathibet Town Centre, with combined retail space of 560,000 square metres.
CPN shares closed yesterday on the Stock Exchange of Thailand at 8.70 baht, down five satang, in trade worth 3.85 million baht.

atom September 14th, 2006, 06:32 AM Big retailers refuse to sign store freeze
Commerce Ministry threatens more rules
Operators of 15 modern retail businesses refused to sign an agreement to freeze their store expansion at a meeting with Commerce Ministry officials yesterday. Some executives told officials they had no authorisation to make such commitments and would need to consult with their offices, adding that they needed more details of the proposal.
The response displeased Preecha Laohapongchana, the caretaker deputy commerce minister. Mr Preecha said retailers would have to stop store expansion voluntarily or would face tougher regulations that could make growth even more difficult.
The ministry gave the retailers a week to think about their position and rescheduled the signing of a memorandum of understanding for next Wednesday. The agreement would call for them to freeze expansion until a new retail law or regulations are passed.
The Commerce Ministry has been under pressure from small local retailers and suppliers, who for the past few weeks have been staging protests demanding the government do more to deal with big foreign retail chains.
The small operators claim they cannot compete in terms of price, selection or amenities with the chains, from convenience stores to discount hypermarkets. Including nearly 3,000 7-Eleven stores, the big chains have a total of about 3,700 outlets and are expected to have 4,700 within two years.
Mr Preecha has threatened ministerial announcements to control the business if big retailers do not sign an agreement.
He did not specify how long expansion should be frozen. ''It would not take a long time and would depend on how much co-operation retailers give us,'' Mr Preecha said.
He said the agreement would contain provisions for big retailers and government officials to study how to help small shops survive in a more competitive market.
Mr Preecha blamed modern retailers for lacking the intention to solve environmental problems such as traffic and pollution, caused directly by aggressive store expansion.
Gwyn Sundhagul, customer marketing director of Tesco Lotus, said his company was ready to comply with the state rules whether they were fair or not.
''But,we want the government to carefully consider any new regulations. Besides, we want to know which is the real party that has been affected by the problem,'' Mr Gwyn said.
He said that if consumers were affected by Lotus's business, they would not be visiting its stores.
Mr Preecha acknowledged that Tesco Lotus was popular because it offered good prices, but said the rapid expansion of its smaller Express outlets in subdistricts and tambons had worried local retailers.
But Mr Gwyn argued that only 100 Tesco Express outlets were available in Bangkok, compared with around 380,000 shophouses.
Currently, four Tesco Lotus outlets are being constructed in addition to 18 Tesco Express stores and one Talad Lotus.
Praphan Eamrungroj, senior vice-president for properties at Big C Supercenter Plc, said halting store expansion would not only affect retailers but also contractors and new job opportunities.
Currently, Big C has three new outlets under construction in Chiang Mai, Samui and Chon Buri.
According to Jariya Chirathivat, vice-president for marketing and communication at Big C, she believed both traditional and modern retailers could co-exist as consumers still patronised both types of businesses.
Mr Gwyn cited figures by the market research firm ACNielsen, which found that the frequency of visits to small shops had increased to 19 times per month as of March, from 17 a year earlier. In the same period, it said, hypermarket visits declined to twice a month from four times.
As well, the survey reported, 87% of respondents still patronised small grocery stores and 78% went to wet markets.
Suchada Ithijarukul, the president of Siam Makro Plc, said her company had 470,000 members. Of the total, 323,000 are small grocery stores, which rose by 5,400 from the same period last year.
She added that 65% of total sales at Makro were to small grocery stores and shops, and were up 15% year-on-year in the first eight months of 2006.

Keeping every one happy
With its new colossal malls and lifestyle complexes, Bangkok is fast becoming a hot spot for discerning shoppers
KANOKPORN CHANASONGKRAM
'There's one problem with Siam Paragon," complains Marco Chou from Taiwan. "It's too big and I don't know where to go." On vacation in Bangkok, the 32-year-old manager at Swedish furniture company IKEA feels that exploring the seven floors of this colossal complex may give him "unhappy" feet. Nevertheless, this landmark for buying luxurious brand names was one of the stops during an all-day shopping spree that started at Mahboonkrong Centre and ended at The Emporium. His verdict on Bangkok's shopping scene - it's perfect compared to Taipei and even better than Hong Kong or Singapore, especially in terms of facilities and services.
Fongchan Thammata, who was doing her Christmas shopping at The Emporium, also gives thumbs up to Bangkok as the best place in Asia for pleasurable spending. Like some Thais, she used to hop on a plane for a shop 'til you drop trip in Hong Kong. Since Bangkok's bigger and better shopping centres offer more variety and international brand names, Fongchan doesn't need to fly out for a Ferragamo. "Shopping is no longer on the agenda while in Hong Kong and now I only go there for sightseeing or visiting friends," she says.
While Thailand has long been a hot spot for cheap shopping and tourists can't miss bargain hunting at the likes of Chatuchak Market, five-star complexes like The Emporium and Siam Paragon have elevated the country's shopping image to attract high-end consumers, who have more bucks to burn. And after premium malls, what else can retail giants roll out to further push Thailand as a shopper's paradise for both locals and foreign tourists?
The recipe for retailing success may be turning towards luxurious, largest or lifestyle shopping phenomena. The revamped CentralWorld at the corner of Ratchaprasong intersection, for example, proclaims itself the first and largest lifestyle centre in Southeast Asia. It is also the last piece of the jigsaw to complete Bangkok's central shopping district, along Rama I, Phloen Chit and Sukhumvit roads, accessible by skytrain.
An evolution of shopping malls perhaps, lifestyle complexes that offer more than shopping fun are popping up all over the place. They may cater to a wide range of consumers with diverse lifestyles or they can focus on a niche market with a particular lifestyle.
"CentralWorld aims to serve the diverse needs, interests and lifestyles of consumers," says Dr Nattakit Tangpoonsinthana, executive vice president of marketing, Central Pattana Public Company. "The bigger space allows us to offer more variety in shopping as well as entertainment and leisure to keep everyone happy." Its 550,000-square-metre retail space houses two department stores, 500 shops, six megastores, 50 restaurants and 21 cinemas as well as TK Park (Thailand Knowledge Park). Central Food Hall, one of the megastores, is claimed to be the largest supermarket in Southeast Asia. Offering a wide array of premium food and wine to cosmopolitans, the lifestyle food hall also has a Central cooking school with international chefs to advise customers on home cooking.
Next Thursday, Dec 21, CentralWorld will relaunch its trendy department store Zen, which now covers seven floors. The revamp has also added Zen World - a 13-floor lifestyle zone featuring a beauty centre, a fitness centre, and a spa and yoga studio as well as travel and educational services, which will be completed by June, 2007.
While the complex may have almost everything under one roof, Dr Nattakit emphasises that it remains true to shopaholics. "CentralWorld is an affordable place where consumers can do some real shopping, not just window shopping, since outlets cater to a wider market group," he says. "Moreover, people will find it a great place to update on new trends in technology, fashion, design and even dining that will enhance or change their lifestyles."
Also calling itself the largest lifestyle centre, but for Phuket, Jungceylon on Patong Beach will be the island's latest attraction. The whole project covers 200,000 square metres with 75,000 square metres for retail space. Its developer, Phuket Square Co Ltd, also wants to make it a world-class shopping and leisure destination.
Prawit Janyasittikul, deputy chief executive officer of Phuket Square, observes that Phuket boasts beautiful beaches and sightseeing attractions but still lacks a stylish spot for shopping and entertainment. "We want it to be a place for people to shop and relax in style. Jungceylon will help stimulate tourism by attracting more high-end travellers and make Phuket more perfect as a holiday destination."
Boasting Sino-Portuguese buildings, modish constructions, broad avenues and green areas for a tropical feel, the project will feature more than 200 shops, Robinson department store, Carrefour Hypermarket, SFX Cinema, a sports complex, international restaurants and clubs. Not only a magnet for tourists, Prawit adds that the complex will be a hangout for locals with diverse needs and lifestyles. A soft opening is scheduled on Dec 20 with 60 outlets ready to welcome visitors. The entire complex, however, will be completed around next June, while a five-star hotel will open its doors at the end of 2007.
A smaller scale lifestyle mall, the five-rai Ozono on Sukhumvit soi 39 has a hotel, spa, restaurants and boutiques. The hotel, though, is for Bozo or Benji, whose masters have to go abroad, perhaps for a business trip or a holiday. Ozono, which opened in May this year, serves a specific target group - pet lovers and their four-legged friends.
Open for business last month, Life Center at Q House Lumpini at the corner of Sathon Tai and Rama IV roads, brings specialised premium healthcare clinics, spas and beauty outlets and a fitness club together for Thailand's first lifestyle mall for health and wellness. It has responded to the health boom, with more people adopting healthy and anti-ageing lifestyles.
With all the new malls serving a variety of lifestyles and grand venues for glorious shopping, Thailand should come closer to becoming the most desirable shopping stop in the world. Lisa Waller, a British international school teacher and long term resident of Thailand, however, sees a weak spot. "A lot of Westerners may find it frustating shopping here," she says. "Why? Because it doesn't cater for Western sizes." At the end of the day, size does matter
WAITING TO BE UNWRAPPED
Since Santa's not coming to town, many people are on a gift-searching mission at Bangkok's popular shopping spots like Siam Paragon, Central Chidlom and The Emporium. Six dedicated shoppers share their thoughts about Christmas shopping - just have a guess at what gifts are in their shopping bags. (Find the answers at the bottom.)
- Mikael Bostrom, Swedish International Development
Cooperation Agency
A business trip here allowed Mikael to do some Christmas shopping in Bangkok. "I don't do it in one go and it takes several days before I can find all the presents for my wife, children, relatives and friends. But I tend to decide on what to buy before going shopping because I'm not the kind of person who would go to department stores for hours," says the efficient shopper. Last Christmas, he gave his wife a beautiful book on art but this year she sent an SMS to him while in Bangkok of what would make her happy this year.
- Wannee Paitoon, financial analyst
"It's the time of the year when we have fun in choosing presents for people," says Wannee. "But don't get into financial trouble by overspending." She didn't go over budget at Siam Paragon's Cartier shop, however, where she bought herself a Christmas present."I'm not crazy about brand names but Cartier offers unique designs and durability. It's worth it." The financial analyst adds, "I wanted to give Mum an overseas holiday package as a present this year but the flights were all booked. So waiting till December is too late if you want to give a great getaway as a gift."
- Fongchan Thammata, employee of trading company
The long list may be a burden but Fongchan puts her heart into buying corporate gifts for her business contacts. It takes about five full days to get her Christmas shopping done. "I have to find something different for each person each year and that can be quite a demanding task," she says. "Cosmetics will always delight women though and for men I like to buy leather belts," she says. "The presentation, like packaging or as a gift set, makes an impressive present and I'm always on the lookout for attractive items."
- Marco Chou, manager at IKEA, Taiwan
"I don't make a list of what I want to buy for my family and friends," says Marco. "I just walk around and I can feel what will be good for my father or my mother when I see it." For his sister and friends, he's looking for fashionable clothing and accessories. The tall and handsome Taiwanese adds that Thailand is a great place for shopping, especially clothing and creative candles.
- Viphavee Benjathanasombat, ballet instructor
After a whole year of working together, Viphavee wants to give her colleagues something nice as an appreciation of friendship. Then she has to prepare gifts, usually hampers and baskets, for respected poo yai. "I will choose hampers containing healthy food and items or fruits," she says. "I want to wish everyone happiness and good health and this kind of gift, in a way, promotes health."
- Kat Ngkaion, prenatal class teacher at The Core & BNH
On her wishlist, she would be very happy if someone buys her a Samsung D900 phone this Christmas. But Kat sees it as a time for giving rather than receiving. Thanks to her financier (her husband), she has a big budget of over 50,000 baht but she spends money wisely and buys when there's a sale. The Filipina has four boys and was at The Emporium buying gifts for her children's friends. "I always get caught up in buying a lot of toys. After a while, my children forget about the toys they got for Christmas," says Kat. "But what we will all remember is how we spend Christmas together. So it's really about loving and giving and I teach my kids that Christmas is about giving, not receiving and I take them to orphanages to visit the children there."
Answers Mikael: silk shawl for his wife, clothing for his kids. Wannee: Cartier ring and bracelet for herself. Fongchan: A big surprise that needs to be kept a surprise. Marco: Killer Loop pants for himself. Viphavee: L'Occitane gift sets for colleagues. Kat: three Barbie dolls and wooden toys for children's friends.
