That's a stunning new view Cul, and who would have thought that 230m+ WT would be consumed so quickly (go Latitude you good thing!)

The glass looks fab, and as long at Multiplex are careful enough to fix the defects in the facade (note the missing horizontal elements above and below the West facing vent on the lower plant level), it's going to be kick-arse!

You really do have to feel sorry for anyone who bought *any* of the south-facing apartments in WT - cuse all they are going to be staring at is green glass!

LOL Yerrrr, where's our new tallest, W.T.? Great that another new scraper can block out the view.

After Latitude, we can look forward to a stream of 20-40 storey structures popping up all over.

Our next tallest will be John Boyd Tower and perhaps City One. :)

I would be happy with John Boyd ATM.

Speaking of this, I counted four missing facade elements on the western face of World Tower today, kinda randomly distributed, and I know I've noticed them on the eastern facade as well in the past.

I've also noticed peeling grey paint on some of the lower level blacony slab edges.

Do you think they just havent gotten around to finishing it all off yet, or was there some typically shoddy work on Meriton's part and pieces are falling off?

yeah the grey models (approved colour) in our city model are fast disapearing. Just this week i coloured 4 new towers all in one city block!
720 George st-35storeys
East-32storeys
Royal garden conversion-16storeys
Park Central- 15storeys
all these will go ahead within 6 months!
hopefuy Jboyd will start this year too!

just some goss on latitudes construction! ive chatted with a Multiplex guy today and i asked him when top cooling/ plantroom will commence? he said next week the first of the 5 cooling towers will be put into place while the steel frame and cladding will also start. This just be finished by late June (about 4 weeks) and then the 70m spire will be put into place by 4 segments. All completed by last week in June! The crane on george st will then come down in july.
looks like July will be a great month to photograph the LAT!

Hey Culwulla,
I noticed you mentioned Lat's spire height at 70m. This added to its structural height of 188m would take its total height to 258m
I thought Lat's total height to spire was 222m?? Did the spire grow??

CULWULLA
May 25th, 2004, 08:32 AM
nah, the spire is (70m in total length),sort of like Q1 and Auroras, the spire starts 4 office levels below roof, and extends over 47m above current roof height of 175m.
confused? i know i am.lol
heres a pic i took of Auoras 70m spire, it starts some 30m below roof.

Well i walked to QVb today as i had 1/2 an hour to kill after missing the bus (doh!). But what can i say about this building??? Simply awesome, its just so modern, well designed, Architecturally brillant. I love the 'comb' type of effect near the staircase, the simple sheer wall of glass, the aluminium trimmings.
Also i have to say the signage on the top is simply perfect. I wonder what material it's made from, it looks so modern and regal at the same time...

Is the Eastern facade seeing much sun in the mornings? or is it blocked by all the Pitt and Castlereagh towers' shadows?

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid119/p258b4da30c9269f99d99192d162fe0dd/f873dc3e.jpg

also: if they've finally got around to cleaning its windows, someone walk into the Hotel Ibis on the other side of Pitt Street, go to level 15 etc, and as you walk out of the lift, there's windows facing the site which will give an absolute purla elevated view of the tower from the above purla angle ;)

Yes tayser, it would see the morning sun....a bit less so in the Winter than the Summer months due to the sun being further north and lower on the horizon. In deep Winter, Hordern Towers may effect the eastern side more so in this respect.

The lower half of Latitude will virtually see no morning sun in any season due to DCM's East construction and the above mentioned regarding Hordern Towers.

The afternoon sun is a totally different story for Latitude.

Greetings Latitude fans

Thought you might be interested in our little project

This link: www.remoteimaging.com.au is to a prototype system we've developed for remotely photographing large scale engineering projects. We've been running it on Latitude since Nov 2002. We've just about ironed out most of the bugs and are now having a scratch an a think as to the best way to market the system.

The camera is solar powered and transmits its pics using a wireless internet connection. The web site updates itself automatically every time the camera sends it a picture.

The animation is contineously looped. It will run slowly the first time as it loads the frames and then speed up. If you're lookin at it on a reasonably grunty P4 it should get up to about 5fps.

As a taster, here's yesterdays snap

enjoy

Hi shutterbug and welcome :)

Muse here. Chief Construction Nerd & Latitude's No. 1 fan (don't listen to the others as they jostle for your attention around the base of my pedestal ;) ).

That is a pretty nifty program @ =<5fps...and thanks for the wonderful taster beamed in from the roof of the Mandarin Club Building - lookin' big, bold and beautiful! Theeee perfect angle for a Latitude construction pictorial documentation.

Will you also be doing it for the closer section of World Square Retail and/or DCM's East, considering you've also been capturing the construction of 688 George?

I'm sure if your company did a press release with an accompanying paid add (revenue incentive to print the related article) for certain publications, most notably Building Australia Magazine and National Building News Monthly, future business would be generated. Also further industry media interest could be spawned. Especially with such a prevalent & prestigous project as Latitude on the "resume". Anyone who is anyone in the industry (not in the snooty sense but more so in the serious sense) would not only read but study such publications from cover to cover. Not only in Oz mind you, as there are O.S. subscribers/recipients of the above mentioned.

Nothing beats word-of-mouth either.

Certainly none of this meant to be unsolicited advice as perhaps you've already thought along such lines.

Now if you'll excuse me, I must tend to my pesky foot-soldiers.

...

This could of been the webcam that was being talked about two years ago. Multiplex wanted a webcam mounted on top of nearby building. If Multiplex wanted it here, it would of been a pretty good choice in the end. The view is great and unobtrusive.

Latitude was such a joy to watch grow over past 18 months. It set an incredible pace (probably due to steel frame construction. hopefully it wont be to long until next one!
The adjacent EAST apartments will commence soon and Multiplex will probably erect the 31storey tower. This should complete the entire World Square complex which has been going for nearly 20 years!

Remember how that expen$ive scale model had signage that included a red logo in the signage. Obviously there's been a deliberate change in styling somewhere during the construction phase.

They're just starting to construct the enclosure for the crown on the Golburn Street side. Small reinforcements have started to appear.

One downer though is that @ the base of 688 George on the Goulburn Street side is they are placing masses of that fuckin' grey grating. The same grating that graces the mid-level plant floors of Latitude Tower. Underneath all the high-tech glass cladding too!

Give it time Muse, in time we'll see what the intended use of the grating is for.

I was standing in front of the George St entrance yesterday and was more worried by this horrid all-steel external stair-case that looked like something from an old back-lane fire-escape. It was so out of place being so close to the schmick looking fin's on the underside of the southern face of the building.

Historical shots there Culwulla.

Im starting to get all nostalgic and emotional, as I remeber back in my newbie days on this forum standing on George Street taking photos of the 12 stories of bare barren core, wondering what it was. I am now witnessing the end of what has been an amazing and equally beautiful contruction period. I cant believe i have just seen pictures of the spire being erected, it really is amazing stuff. :(

Latitude, you, with your bigger brother World Tower (who you compliment mighty finely) have transformed 'Third World Square' into 'World Class Square', and have effectively doubled the length of the Skyline. It has been a pleasure watchin you grow, and everytime I look at you it will remind me of the wonderful times we had together as you grew.

Anyone looked at Latitude today?

I was in the city and noticed that a white panel has been fitted to the spire. I think its the start of the final level of the plant room.

If so, to could say that Latitude has finally reached it's finished height to roof.

Either way, it makes the spire's impression with seen from north or south on George St much bolder.

I think its the best job in the world its definatly not physically demanding but mentally come the end of the day you feel totally drained,as long as you have a head for heights and dont get seasick,oh and if you are a social butterfly forget it,can get quite lonely uptop.Dont forget the crane goes up with the building so its not as if 1 day you come to work at 40 meters the next 200 meters so climbing 4 or so towers every couple of months the height dosent really figure but the views are fantastic

@ gazmo. I was in town yesterday too....Central Square to around Campbell St. So of course not taking my eyes off the damn thing , the white panel adhered to the spire looks like an edge to clamp onto the glass-enclosed crown. Not sure if it reaches exactly where the tower will be topping out though.

The northern crane is just hangin' in there today. The eastern crane is still a'flyin' high (just had a peek outside "me" door).

gazmo
July 11th, 2004, 06:30 AM
Yeah, I don't know whether the panel is a structural member or a temporary support for the spire. I don't see how the glassy plant room enclosure is be form from this starting point.

I've been watching the northern crane all day, and despite the rain, it's been lowered further. The crane cabin is now comfortably below the roof-line.

The panel is as Nappy San white. It looks as though it will clamp onto one of the corners comfortably working as a stabilizer for those once-in-thousand-year wind forces that they musn't be expecting over the next month or two while the crown is completed. Maybe doubling-up as an aesthetic crowd-pleaser too. :)

when the 15m high cooling/room goes on top of Latitude, it should reach the height of the eastern crane cabin.

Chris, as shown by the renderings Latitude is a great looking building, which has been well designed. The rooftop is still being built with the 15 metre cooling room to be built towards the southern side of the tower which along with the spire should top it off perfectly. It's greeny, glass facade is outstanding. Gazmo's pic show's it's ability to connect with Sydney's weather conditions from the constant sunny conitions to the dark and grey skies when storms are approaching . You will be impressed with the final outcome. :)

I may conceed that the spire appears identical to that Aurora Place but as they have been able to incorporate it into the design fairly well, it looks great and as already stated; that it tops off the tower perfectly.

And Gazmo, go for it. Nothing can stop you.

The tallest free-standing flagpole in Australia is the 76m flagpole out at Rydlemere, near parrmatta. The Thomson Marconi Sonar Flag pole is located at front of factory. they make under water sonar equipment for defence force.Ive stood under it, very impressive!
the one at Dharbour is 61m or 200ft. each feet represents each year Australia was when the Bicentenial project was made.

I don't think the top of a tower would be plain and boring if it has a nice series of setbacks. The spire plays it's part too and without it I'd would probably be boring.

The crane is on it's way down right now. During traffic updates on the radio they said that there were disruptions along George St between Liverpool & Goulburn Streets due to a "crane operation". ;)

EDIT - I was refering to the western crane.

matix- glad you asked that. there will be alot of models missing over next few months due to "modelcraft" borrowing them to copy for updating of Customs house city model whhich goes back on display in Sept. I gave them a list of 80 bldgs which were missing from the customs model.it hasnt been updated since conception in 1999.they should only have a group of models for 3 days at a time to copy then they come back for another 5-6 scrapers. they are copying models from south to the north, so they are currently up around world square area.

i walked past there today it was terrible, only 1 lane in each direction and the traffic was terible, it affected all nearby streets in at least a 300m radius to about the broadway, pitt st, george st and lee st intersection

A window on the one of the lower levels of the George St side was shattered during todays wild weather!!!!!

I was there this afternoon. George St in front of Latitude was closed by the police and there was a full of onlookers. A window shattered by wild weather doesn't sound good... Was it a cause of corner-cutting in the construction?

Eastern crane is still as high as ever. It's lifting the huge skeletal cubes that I mentioned earlier.

I took these today of the skeletal cubes for the cooling plantrooms atop Sydney Tower this morning en route to Uni. At 4:30pm this afternoon more framing had been added and from ground level, it looked huge. It is very indicative of the final height too

I also tried to locate the spire on the skyline from Burwood on the train but the crane even though it was on the eastern side wasn't visible one bit.

Well the whole row is now complete and ready to be clad.

I imagine they will be lifting the E & Y neon signage into soon.

CULWULLA, was the 1st pic you posted from today taken from atop the Goulburn St car park?

However as gazmo pointed out re the white louvers :?

No indication of white louvers on the model (bit blurry however indicative):

That model has been so way off - no white "pin-stripe" elements, no white box feature of the northen face - completely different logo forms and colours. Obviously it primary feature defining the form the enclosure is ventilation - it's a double-desker plant room (if I recall, 5 units, then 2 more on top). That must generate a heck load of heat and require lots of ventilation to dissipate it.

i think the model was made 2 years ago, so it was out a date. im pretty sure there has been many subtle changes to facade. the tops of these bldgs always seem to change right up to the last minute.

@ CULWULLA. That last lot of pics that you posted are just superb! However you didn't anwser my question about the first pic taken from atop the Goulburn Street car parking station.

BTW I just had a look outside on my landing and the white "louvers" or bandings seems to be attaching themselves to the skeletal cubes. I'm still sure that there will be E & Y neon signage adhered, eventually being visible from the top of George Street south.

@ Muse. I don't think there's going to be signage on the louvers, but (faithful to the model) below it on the glass below the plant level.

Look at Cul's pic below carefully - you can clearly see vertical mounting brackets on the glass below the louvers and the way the horizontal fins abruptly stop as they come around the corner to the southern side to me indicates it's making room for signage.

My meaning was a general one about the neon signage being placed. Similarly to the E & Y signage on the northern and western sides of the tower (and like every other tall in town), I feel that the E & Y neon on Latitude's southern aspect will be affixed to the exterior of the crown.

Wow, those louvers are really see-through from that angle... If I remember correctly, there was a sun-access plane issue - which was why the crown was going to be glass.

I guess they found something better because this structure really does let the sun through.

they have a fair bit to go looking at todays photos. The whole top is now white.
im happy!
ill scan renders and post them tonight!
im also getting plans to update our city model.
ist amzing how archietcts can progressivley keep altering the building all the way right up to the last door knob is screwed on!

Passing by the site yesterday, I noticed that the windows shattered during last Sunday's wild weather had not been replaced.

The shattered windows were mainly on the bottom half of the building on the western side with a few near the top

Fabian, I don't think those boards in the last image are where shattered windows, I assume that those boards are where the crane attached itself to the building before it was dismantled. Or am I missing something? :?

You wouldn't want to be living in one of those south facing apartments with such a make-shift looking plant room.

It barely constitutes being an enclosure!

ummm interesting concept but I don't think it looks very good. It doesn't match to slick finish of the rest of the tower very well, looks unfinished.
