FANTASTIC NEWS!

Plans to Revive Teesside's famous Globe Theatre Unveiled...

Plans to fully restore and relaunch one of the North East’s most historic and best known live music venues have been announced by Jomast.
A planning application has been submitted to Stockton Borough Council to bring back the famous Globe Theatre as a prestigious live performance and entertainment venue with an audience capacity of 2500.
The Globe, located on Stockton High Street, was one of the region’s best known music venues during the 1950’s and 60’s and attracted major artists including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Buddy Holly and Cliff Richard. Originally built as a cinema in 1913, the building is still renowned for its art-deco architecture and was last used as a bingo hall before closing its doors in 1993.
However, if planning permission is given, The Globe could once again see the return of many top performance artists to Teesside and reinvent Stockton as one of the UK’s most cultural and popular live music centres.
Proposals submitted by Jomast include a multimillion pound restoration programme to retain all major elements of the existing building as used in the past as well as upgrading and installing new seating, catering and washroom facilities. It also includes extending the venue and converting an adjacent vacant property into a modern bar and bistro.
Managing Director, Stuart Monk, said, “The Globe is a very impressive and iconic building with an exceptionally rich history in live music and entertainment. We intend to completely restore it and bring it back to its former glory.
“The present external appearance and character of the buildings will be fully retained and preserved and the internal layout will be largely unchanged in order to maintain the existing space and architectural features. However, we do intend to significantly improve facilities and add a new bar area in the stalls as well as extend the existing building to create a high quality bar and bistro for pre-performance and daytime use.
“Our development plans are substantial but if granted, The Globe could once again be at the forefront of the region’s music scene and play an integral part in the revival and regeneration of Stockton town centre."

This end of Stockton high street could be brilliant; Now with Maxwell's corner refurbished, this soon to be as well as Manhattan's over the road, which they state in the article (adjacent property), it could start to really improve Stockton high street.

This is great news! The Globe is a fantastic building ,with a fantastic history, at last its going to be brought back into use.
This could potentially be a great venue if done right and they dont interfere with the fabric of the building too much.

Yes exactly, but will Stockton be able to sustain both the Arc and the Globe, i'm not sure.

Where did you get that picture from? Got one of that Manhattans over the road which is also to be developed?

Thanks.

I'm sure i've read that it also includes extending it as well, i don't see where they could extend it? There isn't much space too.

I hope this does happen, and i can't wait to see it all done up, i think it could potentially become one of the most popular buildings in Teesside if done properly.

In terms of free land, I guess they've only got the rear of the building, and if they can, the pathway to the side. I hope the building can be saved and the investment is there for the plans to proceed.

Yes, probably at the car park at the rear? I wouldn't of thought they'd be allowed to extend onto the alleyway.

Thanks for posting that, interesting, seems as its really in there best interests to make this happen as well, and hopefully they can help give it a boost and get this done. :) I see The Empire is listed as "low risk" as well.

Stockton Council leader Ken Lupton inside the Globe Theatre.

THE CURTAIN is set to rise on the £4m-plus renovation of Stockton’s Globe Theatre.

The project will bring music and entertainment back to the 2,500-capacity venue, and is being seen as a catalyst for rejuvenating the town’s high street.

Councillor Ken Lupton, leader of Stockton Council, said: “The Globe is a splendid building in the heart of the town and is fondly remembered by many and with enormous potential for the future. Its return is long overdue.” He said the council’s cabinet would in March consider a report on improved traffic and parking arrangements in the High Street and improving the environment of the area.

Councillor Bob Cook, the council’s cabinet member for regeneration and development, said the revamped Globe would be “more than simply a magnificently-restored building”. “The council’s investment will both safeguard the building’s many historic features and enable a major step forward in regenerating Stockton’s town centre to go ahead,” he said.

An estimated 82,500 people will visit the Globe each year and spend around £2.5m in the town centre, supporting up to 130 local jobs. Stockton-based Jomast Developments will start work within the next few weeks to restore the building - and provide the largest auditorium between Leeds and Newcastle.

The Globe Theatre revamp is well under wayby Mike Blackburn, Evening Gazette
Dec 30 2011

THE much-anticipated revamp of Stockton’s historic Globe Theatre is well under way - with an anticipated reopening expected in 2013.

From the outside, you could be forgiven for thinking nothing has happened since multi-million-pound development plans by Jomast were given the green light early last year.

But the past few months have seen substantial improvement work on the interior of the Grade II listed building - which once played host to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Cliff Richard and Buddy Holly.

After decades out of use, 100 skiploads of debris have had to be removed – everything from bingo tables to 1970s tiling and old carpets. The building is also now secure from pigeons.

Ian Williams, project director for Jomast, said: “The main structure is in remarkably good condition considering its age.

“The Globe is now watertight below the stage - but only after we spent a week-and-a-half pumping out at the rate of 350 gallons an hour.”

David Wilmore leads Globe Theatre projectby Mike Blackburn, Evening Gazette Jan 23 2012

David Wilmore has plenty of hard work ahead at The GlobeONE of the country's leading theatre restoration experts has been appointed to help with the revamp of Stockton’s iconic Globe Theatre.

David Wilmore has just finished work on the restoration of Newcastle’s Theatre Royal, and also lists the City Varieties Music Hall in Leeds and the Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond amongst his credits.

Built in 1935, the Grade II listed Globe hosted top names in the music business until the 1970s, including famously a performance by The Beatles on the night President Kennedy was assassinated.

It finally closed in the 1990s after nearly two decades as a bingo hall, and has remained empty since.

Stockton-based Jomast Developments Ltd recently acquired the property on Stockton High Street and last year announced plans for a £4m restoration as a venue for music, comedy and other events, with the support of Stockton Council.

Dr Wilmore, of Theatresearch historic theatre consultants, had heard about the resurrection of the famous Globe and said he was delighted to be brought in as a restoration consultant.

He said: "The Globe is a real ‘Sleeping Beauty' and its restoration provides a great opportunity to bring this beautiful building back to use

£4m revamp of Stockton's Globe Theatre stalls

Stockton's Globe Theatre

THE MUCH-anticipated revamp of Stockton’s historic Globe Theatre has stalled while a bid is made for lottery cash. When the £4m revamp of the legendary music venue began in earnest at the start of 2011 it was hoped the doors would be open for concerts by the end of 2012, but a recent report to Stockton Council’s Cabinet suggested the refurbished Globe - which once played host to bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones - would not open until autumn 2015.

Stockton-based Jomast Developments owns the classic 1930s Art Deco building and is carrying out the renovations with the support of the council. Preliminary work to secure and protect the Grade II-listed building, including addressing flooding issues in the basement, is complete, but it appears the full refurbishment of The Globe is dependent on a bid for Heritage Lottery funding - on which a decision is expected in July.

Stuart Monk, director of Jomast Developments, anticipates the next stage of building work will follow a decision on the Heritage Lottery funding. He said: “As soon as our application is determined, it will be full steam
ahead.

Why the Beatles will be towering over the Globe Theatre
by Mike Blackburn, Evening Gazette, March 21st 2013

http://images.icnetwork.co.uk/upl/gazettelive2/mar2013/7/1/featured-globe-theatre-wrap-599205521.jpg
The proposed £20,000 wrap for the Globe Theatre in Stockton as part of its redevelopment

MUSIC legends like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones will soon tower over Stockton’s high street once again. The green light has been given to wrap Stockton’s Globe Theatre with a dramatic printed mesh featuring famous acts who have performed at the historic venue over the years. Graphics will recall the heyday of the Globe in the 1950s and 1960s - when famous acts like Buddy Holly, Billy Fury, Eddie Cochrane, Roy Orbison and Ike and Tina Turner graced the stage.

The £20,000 installation will be a semi-permanent feature and will act as protection for the building until work starts to renovate the fascia as part of the Globe’s £4m redevelopment. Listed Building Consent for the attachment of the netting to the Grade II-listed art deco building was granted by Stockton Council’s planning committee this week.

“The current appearance of the Globe as a large vacant building on the high street creates a negative impression on a key gateway entrance into the Conservation Area," a report to the committee said. "It is considered that the building wrap will create visual interest in the medium term while the restoration works for the building are developed further."

My first post - probably got the quoting bit wrong.

Who are they kidding, just look around.

I think that if it ever gets finished it can only be a positive thing but I fear that it will never happen.
