Cool thread.... How do you know I love martial art? :okay:

However, there is something that is not right in this poster...
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s57/world-2/images20070706063.jpg

The weapon(Tonfa in Japanese) he is holding is not really used by the Chinese martial artists. I used to participate in numerous 'Martial Art Open Tournaments' across north western United States and western Canada and I'd never seen any Kung Fu practitioners use such a weapon.

Some people might claim that these tonfas originated in China or Indoesia, but they are actually traditional Okinawan fighting tools along with Sai and Bruce Lee's famous Two sections staff (Nunchaku). In the tournaments, I observed that the karate competitors used them a lot while the Chinese martial artists used mostly long sticks, spears or swords.

Btw, the way he holds the tonfas is not the proper way to do it either...

Guai 拐/ or Tonfa, is Shaolin's traditional /old weapon, may be they use less now.
There is a DVD about Shaolin's Guai sell on the Japan shop -- Shaolin traditional Guai.
http://mall.cau1.com/t/bjshop68/item4108141.html

You have to learn the proper way how to hold the Guai from Shaolin's monk.
And Okinawa's martial art was Chinese influenced.

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s57/world-2/guai.png

There are few kinds of Guai 拐。

成家班 Jackie Chan Stunt Team

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Chan_Stunt_Team

The Jackie Chan Stunt Team also known as Jackie Chan's Stuntmen Association is a group of stuntmen and martial artists who work alongside Jackie Chan.

The group originated from the relationships Jackie formed in his early starring roles in Hong Kong action movies. Several of his co-stars and stuntmen hired by the film studios began working together regularly. This engendered a familiarity of one other's skills and abilities and it made sense for them to become a working team. Some of the members had received training at the Peking Opera schools, similar to Chan.

Shaolin Temple's kung fu monks prepare IPO

The 1,500-year-old Shaolin Temple, the birthplace of kung fu, is preparing for a 1bn yuan (£85m) initial public offering (IPO), government sources have confirmed.

A joint venture between Dengfeng, the city where the ancient Buddhist temple is located, and the state-run China Travel Service (CTS) will be listed in either Hong Kong or Shanghai in 2011.

CTS (Dengfeng) Songshan Shaolin Cultural Tourist Company Ltd will have the temple's annual ticket sales of 150m yuan as part of its revenues. However, a government source said that the temple's buildings would not be included in the new company.

Everybody was kung fu fightingMore than 1.6 million tourists visited the site in Henan province last year in order to visit its prayer halls and see the temple's monks perform their kungfu show. The Shaolin Temple also performs a stage show that has toured London and New York.

According to legend, the destruction of the temple by its enemies in the 17th century helped to spread martial arts across China as five fugitive monks carried their kung fu with them.

"The joint venture will promote tourism in the region," said the government source. "But the assets of the temple itself, and its cultural heritage, will not be part of the group," he added.

CTS is expected to take a 51pc stake in the venture after contributing a cash investment. A spokesman for the travel agency said he could not comment on the deal. According to the Oriental Morning Post newspaper in Shanghai, the two sides signed a draft agreement on October 21 and Dengfeng city has agreed to inject 6m yuan into the venture.

The IPO will do little to help the public image of Shi Yongxin, the 44-year-old abbot who has presided over the monastery for a decade, transforming it into a global brand.

Mr Shi's critics claim that he has allowed one of the cradles of Zen Buddhism to become crassly commercial.

Last year, Mr Shi began to franchise out his operation, taking over the management of a number of temples in Yunnan. Rumours suggest that Shaolin also has its eyes on a site in Taiwan.

The front of the Shaolin temple has also been used in recent years as the backdrop to an open-entry kungfu competition and a swimsuit-clad beauty pageant.

Defenders of Mr Shi, who has become known as the "CEO monk" in China, say that the temple was run-down and derelict before he took over, after the suppressions of the Cultural Revolution.

Mr Shi himself has said he is "not a businessman" and that he doesn't "hold shares" in the temple.

And Okinawa's martial art was from Chinese influenced.

To be specific, Okinawan Karate, is derived from Fujian style martial arts. During the Ming and Qing Dynasty, Fuzhou was the only port allowed for Okinawans to trade with, thus much of the Chinese influences are almost entirely those from Fuzhou.

Kung fu kids – out of Africa-1

Enock Belo is every inch a Shaolin kung fu exponent. He throws flying kicks, jumps over obstacles and delivers his strikes smoothly. Belo is 10 years old. And he’s African.

.
The Malawian orphan, who is a resident of the Amitofo Care Centre (ACC) in Blantyre, southern Malawi, is one of the 200 children in the orphanage being trained in the ancient Chinese martial art.

ACC founder, Taiwanese Buddhist monk Hui Li, said Belo and the other children are being trained in the martial art form by three monks who are Shaolin kung fu masters brought in from China.

“The children are trained for three hours a day, six days a week by the Shaolin masters,” said Hui, who is currently here with 20 children from ACC.

ACC: The Amitofo Care Centre

http://amitofocare.blogspot.com/2009/08/about-acc.html

ACC the Organisation
Ven. Hui Li, stepped foot in Africa from Taiwan in 1992 and witnessed the grief of AIDS on the helpless orphans left behind from its wake and the constant threat of disease and poverty on the majority of people. Stricken by the experience he vowed to give this life and after to heal and nurture the suffering in Africa using the Buddha Dharma. His first step was to build Nan Hua Temple; the first Mahayana Temple in South Africa. Then he founded the first Buddhist orphanage, Amitofo Care Centre, in Malawi and started to rear, educate and offer medical care to those in need as well as revive African culture. The well-rounded programmes and services ACC have are providing the orphans a safe and comfortable environment with sufficient opportunities to learn basic morality and insight through Buddhism and some life skills.
This is the goal of ACC; to bring up orphans with a healthy mental, physical and spiritual disposition.

The Art of War 孙子兵法

The Art of War (Chinese: 孫子兵法; pinyin: Sūn Zǐ Bīng Fǎ) is a Chinese military treatise that was written by Sun Tzu in the 6th century BC, during the Spring and Autumn period. Composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare, it is said to be the definitive work on military strategies and tactics of its time, and still one of the basic texts.

The Art of War is one of the oldest and most successful books on military strategy. It has had an influence on Eastern military thinking, business tactics, and beyond. Sun Tzu suggested the importance of positioning in strategy and that position is affected both by objective conditions in the physical environment and the subjective opinions of competitive actors in that environment. He thought that strategy was not planning in the sense of working through an established list, but rather that it requires quick and appropriate responses to changing conditions. Planning works in a controlled environment, but in a changing environment, competing plans collide, creating unexpected situations.

The book was translated into the French language in 1772 by French Jesuit Jean Joseph Marie Amiot, and into English by British officer Everard Ferguson Calthrop in 1905. It likely influenced Napoleon, and leaders as diverse as Mao Zedong, General Vo Nguyen Giap, Baron Antoine-Henri Jomini, and General Douglas MacArthur have claimed to have drawn inspiration from the work. The Art of War has also been applied to business and managerial strategies.

Ip Man might be Bruce Lee's master, but Bruce created his own unique style by adding high kicks and fast punches. Wing Chun itself has no kicking at all!

That's completely BS! Wing Chun doesn't have high kick like karate or tai kun do, but that doesn't mean it has no kick. Wing Chun utilizes close combat method, and the kick is lower half from mid section.
Although Bruce wasn't completely master Wingchun, it gives him an opportunity to explore other styles. He modified WingChun fist technique, added in some high kicks, and worked on some ground technique.:bash:

Kung Fu Kid film star proves a big hitPremium Article !15 January 2011
By LAURA CUMMINGS

HE'S one of China's most highly-regarded Kung Fu masters and was selected by Jackie Chan himself to star in the new Karate Kid movie.

.
But Yuan Xiu Gang took some time out from his busy schedule yesterday to show dozens of pupils at an Edinburgh school his moves.

The 40-year-old Daoist Priest is visiting the Capital as part of his first trip to Europe.

Master Yuan, who has his own internal Kung Fu school at the world-famous Wudang Mountain Academy in China, took around 150 fifth and sixth-year pupils at St Thomas of Aquin's High School for a class in Qi Gong.

The Chinese Kung Fu and TaiJi master said: "The students here were interested and they really enjoyed the class - they got so excited."

The father-of-three began training aged just seven.

In 1991, he went to Wudang Mountain - the renowned centre of Daoism and internal martial arts.

Master Yuan was accepted as a disciple by the great Master Zhong Yun Long and, since then, he has been practising martial arts such as TaiJi, Qi Gong, XingYi, BaGua and meditation.

Rachael Dunsmore, 27, from Haymarket, a student of Master Yuan's for the last two years, said: "Qi Gong is where you work to strengthen the ligaments and tendons, and open the joints.

"Master Yuan also did a beautiful demonstration of TaiJi, which all the students thought was really amazing.

He was amazed at how stiff the kids are, but that's because of our lifestyle here.

"This is a real opportunity for people to get their bodies and minds in shape."

Master Yuan, who gave a public talk at St John's Church last night, will hold another class at Craigroyston Community High School on Monday.

Pupil Andy Jack, 17, said: "Master Yuan's understanding of the relationship between our minds and our bodies is really profound."

Master Yuan added: "Jackie Chan taught me how to face the camera. We worked a little bit together. This was my first film but I don't think I would be a good actor."

Victor Spence, general secretary of Edinburgh Interfaith Association, added: "In relation to our sizable Chinese community here in Edinburgh, this will give people a better understanding and insight into the religious, philosophical and spiritual life of many of our Chinese neighbours."

Master Yuan added: "Edinburgh is a really beautiful city."
