I suggest you to change the title to "Churches in Asia". Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Malaysia, South Korea, etc have more Protestant than Catholic. Or in other words, there are more Christian churches in those countries.

^^
That's why I suggest the creator of this thread to change the title to "Churches in Asia" or else this thread will be filled with Catholic churches from Philippines since Philippines is the only Catholic country in Asia. In addition, most of the forumers here are from SEA. They are not familiar with churches from South Korea or other Asian countries with large number of churches so they cannot post the pictures here. The official religion for Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia is Islam while other Indochina countries and Singapore are largely dominated with Buddhist population. There are not many churches in these countries. If you limit it to Catholic churches, that will be lesser.

Since CP Tan has posted most of my Malaysian Churches pictures, I'm going to post some pictures taken in Manila. I think the Philippines, Vietnam and India by far have the most beautiful/ elaborate Catholic churches in Asia.

My favourite - The Manila Cathedral. The pipe organ is amazing!

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2797/4183504281_f932359f67_b.jpg

A little bit of the massive interior. I believe the current church is the 9th or 10th to be rebuilt on the same spot.

Another very old church in Makati - Sts Peter and Paul's, interior shot. The statues were veiled for Holy Week.

I am from Sarawak state which is a predominantly Christian (not Muslim) state located in Malaysian Borneo. There are lots of churches here. Most of the churches here were built after 1960's and the Christian population is still growing. Here are older Catholic cathedral in my hometown, Kuching, the capital of Sarawak.

since you were impressed by the pipe organ.. i think you'll be more impressed with this

The Bamboo Organ of St.Joseph Parish in Las Pinas City, Metro Manila
(It is almost entirely made of bamboo)
The builder of both the church and its organ was Fr. Diego Cera de la Virgen del Carmen, a priest under the Augustinian Recollects. A native of Spain, he served as parish priest in Las Piñas through many endeavors. Historians portray him as a gifted man-natural scientist, chemist, architect, community leader, organist and organ builder.
Fr. Cera began work on the organ in 1816, while the church was still under construction, and the organ was completed in 1824.

this Bamboo ORGAN is almost 200 years old!! AND YES, IT STILL WORKS!!!

Sorry, some of the churches I posted are Christian churches, not Catholic churches. We should be one in Christ and not divided ourselves to denominations. C.P Tan, firstly, Catholic Churches ARE Christian Churches. I think for a continent as big and diverse as Asia, there is nothing really wrong with this thread title. Catholic Churches in Asia is definitely a worthy topic (for its sheer numbers, history and architecture alone).

What is your defintion of modern churches?

Ironically Philippine churches just look kind off poorly maintained by a population that is mainly Christian. That is different to churches in Non-Christian countries like Malaysia and Thailand.

It has nothing to do with the age or something. Many very old churches from other countries just look better for some reasons.

Miri church attack makes it seven
:ohno:
RAWANG, Jan 10 – A stone was thrown against a church in Miri today, making it the seventh attack in three days that is linked to the “Allah” ruling which has provoked Muslim anger. Earlier reports of an arson attack proved to be unfounded.

This is the first reported attack in East Malaysia where a large part of the population are Christians who worship in Bahasa Malaysia and also the ruling Barisan Nasional’s “fixed deposit” of votes and parliamentary seats in Election 2008.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein confirmed the attempt but insisted the situation in the country is under control.

“The situation is under control and the people should not be worried. They should not be influenced by internet reports or text messages,” he told reporters at an Umno event here.

Four churches in the Klang Valley were hit by petrol bombs on Friday while one was hit last night in Taiping. A Malacca church reported it was splashed with black paint while a priest in Penang had his car splashed with red paint.

A convent school in Taiping was also the target of an attempt with petrol bombs found near its guardhouse overnight. Church authorities believe it was meant for the St Louis Church next door.

Hishammuddin reminded the people not to be influenced by foreign and internet media reports as these could be inaccurate and project the country as unstable.

He said the ministry would brief foreign envoys on the actual situation

“We have to brief the international community as we have our citizens out there who want to know the actual situation which has been played up by certain quarters, including what is taken from the Internet,” he said.

Hishammuddin said the government will give an accurate picture of what has happened in the spate of church attacks.

Miri is a city in Sarawak state, Malaysian Borneo. As a Sarawakian, I am very shocked that this incident will happen in Miri. Sarawak is the only non-Muslim dominant state in Malaysia. Racial issues almost don't exist in Sarawak since independence. Our existing evil government has to be responsible for these church bombing incidents! :bash:

Word "Allah" predates Islam. Various christian minorities in predominantly muslim countries call their god Allah. And have done so for a very long time. Nothing strange about it when muslim religion is so deeply entrenched into the general culture in places.

Not only that both of these religions are "religions of the book" . So technically both the christian god and muslim god are the same one.

So some people would be happy if people started using a different word for "god" altogether from the various religions and or languages which must exist in the area?

Eighth church attack in Seremban
By Adib Zalkapli

http://media.themalaysianinsider.com/images/stories/2008-Aug11/00001_door.jpg
The doors of the SIB church in Seremban show signs of scorching.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 11 — The primarily East Malaysian Sidang Injil Borneo (SIB) church in Seremban, Negri Sembilan was attacked today with a firebomb, leaving scorch marks on its front doors.

The attack did not affect the church interior and was believed to have occurred early this morning.

Rasah member of Parliament, Loke Siew Fook visited the church soon after and confirmed the incident.

“The worship hall was not affected, the attack only affected the front door,” Loke told The Malaysian Insider.

Meanwhile, Negri Sembilan police chief Datuk Osman Salleh said a report has been lodged, but refused to provide any details.

“I can’t confirm anything at this moment,” he said when contacted.

The first church attack took place on Friday, amid dispute over the use of the word “Allah” by the Catholic Church’s Herald to refer to God in the Malay language.

The SIB church conducts it service regularly in the national language.

Both the government and opposition have moved to defuse tension, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announcing financial aid of RM500,000 for the worst hit church — the Metro Tabernacle.

Separately, opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held a dialogue with the Christian community yesterday.

Yap, you're right.. Here in Indonesia we do not have any problem with the using of word "Allah". It is used both in Islam and Christianity (Protestant and Catholic) here... Of course there are still many conflicts between Muslims and Christians here, but not caused by using "Allah" word

I even heard that Bible which is printed in Indonesia (by Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia / Indonesia Biblical Association) are banned in Malaysia because it's using the word "Allah"

I hope the government of Malaysia will solve this problem soon and Christians there can go to church without fear. Christians in Indonesia have suffered by several bombing attacks in several churches during Christmas eve few years ago, but we can pass it... Be strong and may God bless u all there :)

Because the majority of Filipinos especially in Manila do not speak Arabic. Hence they don't use "Allah" to describe God. Its either God or Panginoon.

I attended both Catholic and Protestant services in Jakarta, they also use "Allah". Does it mean that the problem is only confined to Malaysia?

..Here in Indonesia we do not have any problem with the using of word "Allah".

^^ not just used the word "Allah", it banned bcoz they using the Malay language. I was heard the churches prayer n ceremony can't using Malay language. :bash: CMIIW.

we are Indonesian Christian using "Allah" with easy here even the name of our church is using it world too.. like Gereja (Church) Sidang Jemaat Allah, Gereja Allah Al-Masehi, Gereja Allah Pengasih n of course it using Bahasa Indonesia (not much different to Malaysia languange), n also in our prayer n Bible (Alkitab).

Is this confirmed? If Malaysia will ban the use of Malay language in churches, this is too much and will have a world condemnation. So, they expect that Malay will not be spoken by Christians/Catholics in Malaysia???

Malaysian Christians stand firm on use of 'Allah'
(philstar.com) Updated January 12, 2010 03:33 PM

KUALA LUMPUR (AP) – Christian leaders in Malaysia refused Tuesday to stop using the word "Allah" for God despite attacks on churches in a religious crisis that has raised concerns about the erosion of minority rights in the Muslim-majority country.

Daniel Raut, a senior leader of the Borneo Evangelical Church — the largest Malay-speaking congregation in the country — said it will not drop the use of the word "Allah," even though Christians fear for their safety.

"Since our forefathers become Christians in the 1920s, we have been using Allah even in our mother tongue," said Raut, who is from the Lumbawang tribe in eastern Sarawak state. "We are quite fearful (for our safety) but we will pray for protection and believe God will intervene in this matter."

Nine churches have been attacked since Friday, with the assailants using firebombs and in one case, paint. The unprecedented attacks have strained ties between Christians and the majority Malay Muslims, denting Malaysia's image as a moderate Muslim-majority nation.

The attacks were triggered by a Dec. 31 High Court decision that overturned a government ban on the use of "Allah" by Roman Catholics in the Malay-language edition of their main newspaper, the Herald. The ban and the ruling also apply to Malay-language Bibles, 10,000 copies of which were recently seized by authorities because they translated God as Allah.

The government has condemned the attacks as the work of extremists, but also has appealed the ruling. Jamil Khir Baharom, the Cabinet minister responsible for Islamic affairs, called on Christian leaders to drop the use of "Allah" to help ease tensions.

About 9 percent of Malaysia's 28 million people are Christian, most of whom are indigenous tribespeople in the remote Sabah and Sarawak states on Borneo island. Muslims make up 60 percent of the population and most are ethnic Malays.

Raut was in court early Tuesday to support church member Jill Ireland, who sued the government in 2008 after airport authorities seized eight of her Christian compact discs with the word "Allah" printed on them. The trial is set for March 15. The Borneo church also sued the government in 2007 after custom officials seized six cartons of Christian literature containing the word "Allah."

The Borneo church was formed in Sarawak state in 1928, nearly 30 years before Malaysia's independence, but has since expanded nationwide and has some 250,000 members, a majority of them who use Allah in their worship and literature.

Alfred Tais, who heads the Malay language section of the National Evangelical Christian Fellowship Malaysia, said there are at least 300 churches in peninsular Malaysia and hundreds more on Borneo that worship in the Malay language using "Allah."

"We won't hold any protests. Our response is to pray for peace. We have mobilized all our members to pray that God will give our leaders wisdom to find a solution to this problem," he said.

The Allah ban is unusual in the Muslim world. The Arabic word is commonly used by Christians to describe God in such countries as Egypt, Syria and Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim nation.

I don't really know what the reason is... But there in Malaysia the country even make a regulation that whoever ethnically Malay should be Islam and they can't convert to other religion or they may sentenced to death :ohno:

Maybe that's the reason why they ban the use of Malay language. First, because there are no ethnic Malay who are Christians, why not using Chinese, English, or Indian languages? Second and most important reason, I think they afraid that the use of Malay language will ease the evangelism or Christianization toward ethnic Malay...

Formerly one of the last few cloistered convents in the world, the fine gothic architecture is a favourite theme among photographers. (From http://www.singaporetourism.info)

The complex's name was taken from the original convent name CHIJ which stands for Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus. :)

Binondo Church is also known as Minor Basilica of St. Lorenzo Ruiz is located in Binondo, Manila. Founded by the Dominican priests in 1596, Binondo Church is one of the oldest places of Christian worship in the Philippines. It was administered by the Secular Priests in 1768, returned to Dominican Administration in 1822 and back to Secular Priests in 1898.
The maintenance is largely funded by the Catholic Chinese community, many of whom reside or operate businesses in neighboring Chinatown. Masses are held in Filipino, in Chinese dialects (Mandarin, Hokkien), and in English.

San Agustín Church is the oldest existing church in the Philippines. It is an essential tourist destination in Manila for those who are interested in Philippine history and culture.

The present structure is actually the third to stand on the site. It has 14 side chapels and a trompe-l'oeil ceiling. Up in the choir loft are the hand-carved 17th-century seats made of molave, a beautiful tropical hardwood.

The San Agustín Church lies inside the walled city of Intramuros located in the capital city Manila. It is the first European stone church to be built in the Philippines designed in Spanish architectural structure. It also houses the legacies of the Spanish conquistadores, Miguel López de Legazpi, Juan de Salcedo and Martín de Goiti who are buried in a tomb underneath the church.

The Basilica Minore de San Sebastián, better known as San Sebastián Church, is a Roman Catholic minor basilica in Manila, the Philippines. It is the seat of the Parish of San Sebastian and the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

Completed in 1891, San Sebastián Church is noted for its architectural features. An example of the revival of Gothic architecture in the Philippines, it is the only all-steel church or basilica in Asia. It has also been implausibly reputed to be the first prefabricated building in the world, and more plausibly claimed as the only prefabricated steel church in the world. In 2006, San Sebastian Church was included in the Tentative List for possible designation as a World Heritage Site. It was designated as a National Historical Landmark by the Philippine government in 1973.

San Sebastián Church is under the care of The Order of the Augustinian Recollects, who also operate a college adjacent to the basilica. It is located at Plaza del Cármen, at the eastern end of Claro M. Recto Street, in Quiapo, Manila.

First built by Father Diego Espina in 1575 in what is now known as San Nicolas, which was historically a part of Balangon. It was destroyed when the volcano erupted in 1754. It was rebuilt at the present site in 1755, but was destroyed by an earthquake in 1849. Construction of the present church was started in 1856, according to the plans of Lucina Oliver, an architect. It was inaugurated in 1885.

The First National Shrine in the Diocese of Malolos shrine

On June 12, 1976, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), headed by then Julio Cardinal Rosales, raised the honors of the church, when on their semi-annual assembly in Baguio declared the parish church of Our Lady of Fatima in Valenzuela a National Shrine. The great honor imposed a greater responsibility, for the parish must lead in spreading the urgent message exhorted by Our Lady in 1917. This was a signal honor to the parish, a strong moral booster to a community faced with such a herculean challenge, but with its own corresponding responsibility for it bestowed on the young parish the task of leading the promotion of the devotion to Our Lady of Fatima.

Tourist Site and Pilgrim Church

Due to the increasing prestige of the National Shrine during that time, on April 24, 1982 and December 10, 1982, Tourism Minister Jose D. Aspiras declared it as a Pilgrim Church and Tourist Site, respectively. During the Jubilee Year celebration in 2000 and the Year of the Holy Rosary in 2002 to 2003, the National Shrine was among the designated pilgrim churches in the Diocese of Malolos. It also hosted several diocesan Marian celebrations such as the Diocesan Marian Pilgrimage on May 13, 2006, a Marian Year and on the dawn of January 5, 2008 which gathered thousands of Marian devotees in the diocese and around the country

Center of the Devotion to Our Lady of Fatima in the Philippines

The World Apostolate of Fatima (WAF) National Center is also located at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima. This organization is a Public International Association of the Faithful of Pontifical Right established by the Holy See on October 7, 2005. It is also a movement of the Church with millions of members all around the world who follow the requests made by Our Lady to the three children in 1917. In 1989, the delegates to the national convention of the WAF held in Cebu City unanimously approved the transfer of the National Center of the WAF to the National Shrine. Its affiliate organizations are the Youth Apostolate of Fatima (YAF) and Children Apostolate of Fatima (CAF).

Home of the National Pilgrim Image (NPI) of Our Lady of Fatima

The National Pilgrim Image of Our Lady of Fatima is one of the original statues blessed by Pope Paul VI and was later brought to the Philippines and crowned as the National Pilgrim Image during the launching of the National Marian Year in December 1984. It was subsequently entrusted to Bahay Maria for care and protection until it was permanently handed to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima on October 17, 1999. The Pilgrim Image was the forefront of the “EDSA People Power Revolution” in 1986 where Our Lady, through the image, showed her maternal protection to our people. This is the reason why the image of Our Lady of Fatima is considered as the universal image of peace. During the solemn rites of her turn-over to the National Shrine, the signing of an “Agreement for Acceptance of Responsibility for Care and Protection” was also made. Since then, the image has been a witness of numerous note-worthy events which shaped the history of the Church and the society.

Almost five decades since its establishment, people from different parishes and even dioceses continue to come, in leaps and bounds, to feel the solace, find comfort and direction, and experience peace as they pray, celebrate, and serve God. The National Shrine will never be what it is today, a Shrine of Peace, if not through that generous efforts and services rendered by many people in the past years. This community prays that the Lord Jesus Christ, through Our Lady of Fatima, will continue to transform this piece of land as a mirror of His face, of compassion, piety, and love, together with the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Mother and companion in our journey.

Malate Church is a church in Manila, Philippines. It is a Baroque-style church which faces a small park and beyond that Manila Bay. The church is dedicated to Nuestra Senora de Remedios ("Our Lady of Remedies"), the patroness of childbirth. [1]A revered statue of the Virgin Mary in her role as Our Lady of Remedies was brought from Spain in 1624 and stands at the altar.

The church was built originally in the sixteenth century by the Augustinians and is one of the oldest churches in Manila outside of Intramuros. British soldiers took refuge in this church during their occupation of the Philippines and attack on Intramuros in 1762-63.

I think the oldest is the Basillica Minore del Santo Nino.

While the Philippines has the most number of old churches, the oldest Catholic church in South East Asia is possibly the semi-ruins of St. Paul's Church in Melaka, Malaysia.

St. Paul's was built in 1521 by the Portuguese (i.e. 44 years before Basilica Minore del Santo Niño).

Mass is still celebrated on the feast of St. Francis Xavier. Click to see picture:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_yue3lWqntTA/TAiWSXkFvUI/AAAAAAAAB1s/g9XrnKmfQ_A/s1600/IMG_1329+copy.jpg

St. Francis Xavier was briefly buried in the church before his incorupt body was transferred to Goa.

By the way, there was an earlier church in Melaka built in 1515, called The Annunciation - that church no longer exits.:)

Mass is still celebrated on the feast of St. Francis Xavier. Click to see picture:

St. Francis Xavier was briefly buried in the church before his incorupt body was transferred to Goa.

By the way, there was an earlier church in Melaka built in 1515, called The Annunciation - that church no longer exits.:)

The First Mass in the Philippines happened in 1521...

OK. :)

What really surprised me was seeing Mass being celebrated smack in the middle of a Makati shopping centre concourse, I think it was Glorietta!

Well, it isn't exactly similar, but there are some places that do have their own dedicated chapels.

As a Malaysian, the Philippines is always a refreshing SEA country in terms of culture and I love it - always look forward to trips to Manila.

it is the oldest church in the whole Philippines so i guess it is also the oldest in SE Asia.

^^ actually the oldest church in ASIA is in Yordania,

in SEA, dunno yet. BUT, in old town square of BATAVIA (Jakarta-Indonesia) there is an old church (1695 - now). the name of the church is the Sion Church (it's a protestant church). just wonder if there's any other church in SEA older than it. :dunno:

it is defferent from Today's Catholic
they dont go to Catholic church..

Kakure Kirishitan (隠れキリシタン?, Japanese for "Hidden Christian") is a modern term for a member of the Japanese Catholic Church that went underground after the Shimabara Rebellion in the 1630s.

Kakure Kirishitans are called the "hidden" Christians because they continued to practice Christianity in secret. They worshipped in secret rooms in private homes. As time went on, the figures of the saints and the Virgin Mary were transformed into figurines that looked like the traditional statues of the Buddha and bodhisattvas. The prayers were adapted to sound like Buddhist chant, yet retained many untranslated words from Latin, Portuguese and Spanish. The Bible was passed down orally, due to fears of printed works being confiscated by authorities. Because of the expulsion of the Catholic clergy in the 17th century, the Kakure Christian community relied on lay leaders to lead the services.

In some cases, the communities drifted away from Christian teachings. They lost the meaning of the prayers and their religion became a version of the cult of ancestors, in which the ancestors happened to be their Christian martyrs.

Many secret Christians, some of whom had adopted these new ways of practicing Christianity, came out of hiding when religious freedom was re-established in the mid-19th century and rejoined the Catholic Church after renouncing their unorthodox, syncretic practices. However, there were those who decided not to rejoin. They are known as the Hanare Kirishitan (離れキリシタン, separated Christians).

Modern extinction of Hanare KirishitansFollowing the legalization of Christianity and secularization of Japan, many Hanare Kirishitan lineages ended abruptly. Traditionally, boys learned the rituals and prayers from their fathers; when boys were uninterested or moved away from the homes, there would be no one left to continue the lineage.

For a while, Hanare Kirishitans were thought to have died out entirely, due to their tradition of secrecy. A group on Ikitsuki Island in Nagasaki prefecture, which had been overlooked by the Japanese government during the time of persecution, made their practices public in the 1980s and now perform them for audiences; however, these practices have acquired some attributes of theater, such as the telling of folktales and the use of statues and other images which most underground Christians had never created.

The anthropologist Christal Whelan uncovered the existence of genuine Hanare Kirishitans on the Gotō Islands where Kakure Kirishitans had once fled. There were only two surviving priests on the islands, both of whom were over 90, and they would not talk to each other. The few surviving laity had also all reached old age, and some of them no longer had any priests from their lineage and prayed alone. Although these Hanare Kirishitans had a strong tradition of secrecy, they agreed to be filmed for her documentary Otaiya.

The Cathedral was built in 1937 and completed in 1942. The particular architecture of the cathedral is its large doors without partitions. The verandah of the Cathedral is largely designed in order to make who ever stay in the verandah, feel that they were in the interior of the church. Beyond the verandah, there is a small room to maintain remains of dead Christian?s ashes in small earthenware for worshipping (with burning incense stick).

San Pedro Cathedral is the oldest church in the city, prominently located at the corner of San Pedro Street and C.M.Recto Avenue. Named after Saint Peter, the patron saint, it was said to be built in 1847 by Don Jose Oyanguren, the Spanish conquistador who later become the first governor of Davao region.

The church’s old altar is still preserved at the right wing where old statues of saints are placed. This is also where the bell tower stands, along with other notable sculptures outside (Blessed Virgin Mary, Ten Commandments and Pieta statues).

The cathedral was rebuilt in the 70s by renowned Architect Manuel Chiew and its façade or dome is said to be inspired by Noah’s Ark. (http://www.dabawenya.me)
