View Full Version : Eastside panorama photographs
Guilbert53 December 14th, 2009, 09:58 PM Over the last two and a half years I have been taking a number of photographs of the Eastside area of Birmingham.
Some of these have been panorama shots, trying to capture a huge sweep of various parts of Eastside so it can be
compared when development is ongoing or complete.
I am creating this topic so all my panoramas can be collected in one place.
Note all these pictures have been cut down from their original size so they fit on this forum. The originals are huge,
but if anyone wants copies of the originals let me know.
.
Guilbert53 December 14th, 2009, 09:59 PM Here is a photograph of a plan for Eastside as it was in the middle of 2009. This photograph was taken inside the Millenium Point
building, however this plan has since been removed.
I have left it rather large so it is easier to read. On the panorama pictures that follow I will indicate from where the pictures
were taken.
Note this plan will not be built as shown (although some parts may). The plans for a high speed rail link (HS2), with a station on
this site, has thrown all plans for this area into disarray.

Guilbert53 December 14th, 2009, 10:05 PM In the append above is a photograph of the plan for Eastside as it was in the middle of 2009. The view in the photograph
is from the Eastern end, looking West/South West towards Birmingham city centre.
NOTE: This plan was in place BEFORE they announced the HS2 high speed rail link idea (March 2010), with a possible
station in this area. Some, or all, of the plans on the picture above could change over the next few years. Some may
be built, others redesigned, others replaced by railway lines or the railway station.
On the plan above each area is numbered, so let us look at each numbered area in more detail. The numbers go clockwise
round the picture, starting bottom left at 1 and going round to bottom right to 11 (with 12 the city park).

Guilbert53 December 14th, 2009, 10:30 PM Here is a panorama of the Curzon Street site (area 1 on the plan above) as it was on Sunday 18th October 2009.
This picture is taken at the very Eastern end of the Curzon Street site. It pans roughly South West round to North.
On the left is the railway line, the Southern boundry of the site, and behind you can see the Rotunda. Next as you
pan round are a large number of trees, which denote the Western end of the new city park (area 12 on the map above).
The brick building in front of the trees is the Eagle and Tun pub.
After the trees is the dull brown Albert Street Car park and Dale House, which will be demolished to make way for the
Martineau Galleries (area 6 on the map above). Then as you pan round you see the new large Masshouse development,
then the back of Curzon Street station.
You then see the huge Millenium Point / Thinktank building, then in the distance the partly destroyed Victorian building.
The Victorian building, and the vacant land in front, is the site of Eastside Locks (area 11 on the map above)

Guilbert53 December 14th, 2009, 10:37 PM Here is a panorama of the City Park Gate site (area 5 on plan above) in Birmingham's Eastside. This was taken from the roof of
the Albert Street car park opposite (area 6) on October 18th 2009 pointing South East.
The white building on the left is Masshouse (area 7), then in the distance Curzon Street station (area 1) and behind it the
new student accomodation, then the triangular Island House, then a temporary car park, and on the right Moor Street station
and the Selfridges car park and link bridge.
The area behind the car park and Island House (with the trees) is the planned start of the new city park (area 12)
that will snake its way past Curzon Street station almost to the student accomdation.
If anyone wants to see the opposite view (the view FROM in front of the student accomodation) then see
append above, here:

Guilbert53 December 14th, 2009, 10:39 PM Here is a panorama of the Eastside Locks development (area 11 on plan above), taken in October 2009.
The view is from where the canal goes under Curzon Street, looking North.
The cranes on the left are on Jennens Road and are on the site of new Aston University student campus. The brick building to the right is
Moby Dick's pub, to the right of that is the tower of the Victorian factory, the cream building in the centre is the canal building, and
the buildings on the right face on to Lawley Midddleway.

Guilbert53 December 14th, 2009, 10:42 PM Here is a panorama of what WAS going to be the Eastside Birmingham University Campus site (area 2 on plan above), project
since cancelled, taken on Saturday 30th October 2009 in Bartholomew Street, from the North West of the site, panning roughly
North East to South East. The University campus WAS going to take up all the grassed area in front (the plot is currently split
in half by Banbury Street).
As you pan from left to right, on the left of the picture is Albert Street which leads into Curzon Street. The buildings on the
left have JUST been demolished (December 2009), and where they stand will become part of the new city park (area 12),
which will continue on down Curzon Street (in front of the Millenium Point building).
As you pan round you can see Millenium Point, the Woodman pub, the Curzon Street station (with the new student
accomodation behind), the Eagle and Tun pub, the railway line, and finally Bartholomew Road.
I have now posted 4 panoramas of what WAS planned to be the University Campus site, from four different sides. Panorama
4 is from the North West, Panorama 13 is from the South East, Panorama 14 is from the South West, and Panorama 15 is
from the North East.
Panorama 4) What WAS going to be the Birmingham City University campus site from the North West:

Guilbert53 December 14th, 2009, 10:49 PM Another panorama of Eastside, this time from the top of Selfridges car park. This is a panorama panning from roughly North
West to North East.
All along the front of the picture you can see Moor Street station.
As you pan round from the left the white building is the back of Marks and Spencers, then the small cream building is a
catholic church, then you see the ugly dark brown Albert Street car park and Dale house (with the big yellow sign on
it) which are due to be demolished (area 6 on the plan above).
The row of conifer trees in front is roughly the site of the City Park Gate development (area 5 on the plan).
Then the large white buildings are Masshouse (area 7 on the plan). In front of them the small cream building is the Fox and
Grapes pub, and to the right the trees are where the new public park will start and snake off to the right (area 12 on the plan).
Then we see Millenium Point, and in front of it the grass area due to become Birmingham University Campus (area 2 on the
plan). Just at the back of the grass you can see Rosa's cafe (and other buildings) which have since been demolished
You can then see Curzon street station (with the huge vacant plot behind, area 1 on the plan), and on the far right the new
student accomodation that defines the Eastern end of the Eastside plot.
Panorama 5) A view of the whole "Eastside" site from Selfridges car park - from the South looking North:

Guilbert53 December 14th, 2009, 10:56 PM Here is a panorama shot from Park Street Gardens (near Moor Street station) from Sunday 13th December 2009.
Taken from Park Street gardens the picture pans round from the Bull Ring and Moor Street station on the left (facing
South West), right round to Curzon Street station on the right (facing North East).
The main development at the start of the photo (directly in front) is City Park Gate (area 5 on the plan above) but as you
pan round you see Martineau Galleries (area 6), Masshouse (area 7), The Learing Centre (area 8), Curzon St development
(area 1), and the City Park site (area 12).

Guilbert53 December 17th, 2009, 09:25 PM Here is a new panorama I have never posted before. This was taken from the roof of the Albert Street car park on
October 18th 2009 pointing roughly North East. This is mainly a view of the Masshouse site, although other sites are shown.
The large brown building on the left is Dale House, part of the Martineau Galleries development (area 6 on the plan above).
The two modern buildings, red and yellow, are new university buildings - Matthew Boulton college and Etna House (Jennens Court).
The large white building is Masshouse (area 7). The Masshouse site also includes the vacant area in front of the red building,
currently a temporary car park.
To the right of Masshouse, in the distance, is Curzon Street station (area 1) and behind it (in the far distance) the new
student accomodation
The area on the right of the picture is part of the City Park Gate site (area 5 on map). The vacant triangular site in front
of Masshouse has plans for a hotel, then to the right of that site is the triangular Island House.
On the far right is the start of a temporary car park (still part of the City Park Gate site) that leads up to Moor Street station.
You can see a full panorama of the City Park Gate site above (here http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=48489487&postcount=5)
The area behind Island House and the car park (with the trees) is the planned start of the new city park (area 12) that
will snake its way past Curzon Street station almost to the student accomdation.

Guilbert53 December 20th, 2009, 08:59 PM Here is a new panorama I have never posted before. This shows the Eastside Locks site (area 11 on the map above).
This was taken from the grounds at the "back" of Millenium Point, near Jennens Road and Howe Street, on October 31st 2009,
pointing roughly East.
The land I am standing on is roughly the site of the new multi storey car park planned for the area, so when that is built I
may not be able to get this picture again (or the car park may obstruct much of the view).
The road directly in front is Howe Street, the entrance to the Millenium Point Car park. The jumble of cars on the left are
parked in "A B Row". The roads running in front of the Victorian factory are Cardigan Street and Belmont Row.
As we pan left to right we see the Victorian factory, then the small canal building (just left of the red van), in the distance
we see the new student accomodation, and in front of that Moby Dick's pub, then the Millenium Point car park, then
Millenium Point itself.
The area in the far distance, way behind the Millenium Point car park, is the huge Curzon St site (area 1 on the plan above).
There is a panorama of this site above, here:

MrSingh December 21st, 2009, 10:05 AM Dear Guilbert, seeing as I'm the first non-Guilbert to write on this thread. I would like to Thank You for the posts you have put up so far. They are providing an excellent picture and insight into the current circumstances of the overall vision for Eastside, and it is now clear that this is a project that ought to be carried out with the utmost care and attention and is obviously vast in scale. Hopefully we will see a pick up in the market in 2011 and a movement toward emphasising office developments over residential.
Keep em coming :)
Guilbert53 December 30th, 2009, 08:26 PM Here is another new panorama I have never posted before. This shows a complete panorama of the North side of the
Eastside complex, taken from Jennens Road. I know this is similar to the last picture I posted, but I believe it is just
different enough to be worth posting.
This was taken from the middle of the Jennens Road dual carridgeway near the "back" of Millenium Point. It was taken on
October 31st 2009 panning roughly North East to South West.
The road running along the front of the picture is Jennens Road, and the small road in the centre running towards Millenium
Point (away from the picture) is Howe Street. The jumble of cars on the left are parked in "A B Row".
All the area to the left of Howe Street is the Eastside Locks complex (area 11 on the plan above). The area to the right of
Howe Street is the Millenium Point car park and Millenium Point itself.
Note there are plans for a multi storey car park on the land at the end of Howe Streeet and the area behind the advert for the film
"2012".
The new buildings on the far right of the picture are Etna House (Jennens Court), part of the Learning Quarter (area 8 on the
plan) and Matthew Boulton College.
Panorama 9) A view of the whole "Eastside" site from Jennens Road - from the North looking South:

GrAfiK_248 December 30th, 2009, 10:01 PM very nice guilbert, keep it up :)
morestoreysplease January 1st, 2010, 12:30 AM Cheers Guilbert - man what a depressing area it is at the moment. This should have been dealt with when Masshouse Queensway was demolished in 2001 so the two developments of Eastside and Masshouse could have meshed together by now. God knows when we'll get any life around here!
Guilbert53 January 4th, 2010, 12:06 PM Here is another new panorama, taken on October 31st 2009, showing a part of Eastside I have not shown before.
This is taken from Jennens Road, about 200 yards WEST from the picture above (panorama 9), taken from behind the
Millenium Point / Thinktank building. The picture pans roughly North East to South East.
The road on the very left is Jennens Road, travelling East. The next road (after the trees) is Nova Scotia Street,
which snakes its way behind Millenium Point. The area behind the trees is the site of the new multi story car park (shown
better on panorama 9 above).
We then see the huge back of the Millenium Point building, and then a bare area in front, ready for development. This
plot is part of the Learning Quarter (area 8 on the plan above), and is planned to become the Ormiston Academy for
Performing Arts. Nova Scotia Street will be removed and built over.
As we pan round further we see Grosvenor Street (Nova Scotia Street merges into Grosvenor Street), going down towards
Curzon Street station. In front of the station is the red brick Woodman pub, and to the right of that some grass which will
be part of the Birmingham University Campus site (see panorama 4 above).
At the bottom of Grosvenor Road you can see 2 cars pointing left. They are on land which will become part of the Eastside
City Park (area 12 on the plan above). On the far right of the picture we see part of the new Etna house (Jennens Court)
complex.
Panorama 10) View from the Western end of Jennens Road

smysticed January 4th, 2010, 05:24 PM Thanks Guilbert. The big empty space in the middle of this shot is going to become the Ormiston performing arts academy, we've had a planning application in i think?
i_like_concrete January 4th, 2010, 05:50 PM Here's the thread for the academy.

Guilbert53 January 5th, 2010, 08:19 AM Thanks Guilbert. The big empty space in the middle of this shot is going to become the Ormiston performing arts academy, we've had a planning application in i think?
Here's the thread for the academy.

Thanks guys. I am learning new things all the time.
I have updated the text for Panorama 10 above (I had no idea it was called Nova Scotia Street I thought it was Grosvenor Street).
I have also added a link to the Ormiston academy discussion to my full list of Eastside projects above (in my second append).
Guilbert53 January 8th, 2010, 11:01 AM Here is another new panorama, taken on the 1st January 2010. This panorama shows the site of the Eastside City Park
(area 12 on the map above).
The City Park is a long thin park that will snake its way down from the very Western end of Eastside (near Moor Street
Station) to the very Eastern end of Eastside. This photograph shows more of the Eastern end of the City Park site (you
can see the Western end of the City Park in panorama 12 below).
The road that runs all along the front of the picture is Curzon Street. The photograph was taken where Curzon Street
meets Cardigan Street (you can see Cardigan Street in the centre of the picture).
Curzon Street will remain after the development of Eastside (as will Cardigan Street) and the park will be built all along the
area at the front of this picture, on the land running between Curzon Street and the Millenium Point/Thinktank building.
As you pan from left to right you can see the Rotunda on the very left, then Curzon Street Station, then the large white
Masshouse buildings (the park will run in front of the Masshouse buildings). You can then see the huge Millenium Point /
Thinktank buildings (the park runs right in front of the building), then some grass plots either side of Cardigan Street (the
park will continue on these grass plots),
Then as we pan to the right we begin to see the Eastside Locks site (area 11 on the map above). The cars on the very
right are parked in Penn Street which I believe will be lost as part of the Eastside Locks development. Panorama 3 above
is taken from a position on the very right of this picture, looking North into the Eastside Locks site.
I believe the building of Eastside City Park is due to start in the middle of 2010 and will take 2 years.

Nacho January 8th, 2010, 11:46 AM Good pano there Guilbert ; MP seems linked to the centre more .The new Aston University residences appear to help connectivity too .It's also time to sort out that burnt out buildng before it collapses .
ROYAL BLUE January 8th, 2010, 07:10 PM I'd imagine as soon as the park is complete, interest in the area will go through the roof. Especially apartments etc. Its not really a pleasent area to live at the moment, but that will change.
Guilbert53 January 8th, 2010, 07:30 PM I'd imagine as soon as the park is complete, interest in the area will go through the roof. Especially apartments etc. Its not really a pleasent area to live at the moment, but that will change.
While it is called a City Park I do think the name is a bit of a misnomer. It is not really a "park" in the true sense (like say Cannon Hill Park).
It is a long thin corridor of grass/trees/benches/fountains etc, and if you look at the width of it there is not a lot to it and I do wonder how many people it will attract once it is built.
The danger is that if the park gets finished but the other developments (like the huge Curzon Street site or the Eastside Locks site) have not even been started then the park will soon fall in to disuse and be haven for vandalism and druggies.
I really hope not, and I hope the park begins to attract further development.
It really needs the other major sites to be started soon or the park will be a "finished" development inside a complete area of waste land.
.
i_like_concrete January 8th, 2010, 07:34 PM I've always thought of it as more of a large public square than a park, but I guess the council didn't think that sounded as grand.
Guilbert53 January 8th, 2010, 07:34 PM Below is a plan of the park
The bottom left is Moor Street Station, the top right is about where I took my picture above from (Panorama 11), you can see Cardigan Street "cutting" through the park.
Plan of Eastside City Park

.
Guilbert53 January 23rd, 2010, 08:06 PM Here is another new panorama, taken on the 23rd January 2010 (not a particularly good panorama and I may take it again
on a sunnier day in the spring). This panorama shows the site of the Eastside City Park (area 12 on the map above).
The City Park is a long thin park that will snake its way down from the very Western end of Eastside (near Moor Street
Station) to the very Eastern end of Eastside. This photograph shows more of the Western end of the City Park site (you
can see the Eastern end of the City Park in panorama 11 above).
The road that runs all along the front of the picture is Albert Street (it becomes Curzon Street AFTER the traffic lights on
the right). The photograph was taken where Albert Street faces Fox Street and Grosvenor Street (you can see them
both in the centre of the picture).
This section of Albert Street (and sections of Fox Street and Grosvenor Street) will be REMOVED during the development
of the Eastside City Park and the park will be built all along the area at the front of this picture.
As you pan from left to right, on the very left you can see the trees (and graveyard) of the existing park area (the new
park will start in this existing park), then the large white Masshouse buildings (the park will run in front of the Masshouse
buildings). You can then see the cleared site where Rosa's and Los Canarios were, then a large grass plot, with Fox Street
on the left of the grass plot and Grosvenor Street on the right of the grass plot.
Then as we pan to the right we see the Millenium Point / Thinktank building (the park will continue along the front of the
building and replace the huge red patio), then we see Curzon Street (which will remain after the park is built) and finally
on the right a small part of the Woodman pub.
After the park is built, and the section of Albert Street in front removed, all cars coming down Cuzron Street will have to turn
LEFT at the Woodmans pub into New Canal Street.
I believe the building of Eastside City Park is due to start in the middle of 2010 and will take 2 years.

Nacho January 23rd, 2010, 08:46 PM Thanks for the pano Guilbert .
Guilbert53 January 26th, 2010, 11:38 PM Here is a new panorama of what WAS going to be the Eastside Birmingham University Campus site (area 2 on the map above),
now cancelled, taken on Saturday 1st January 2010 in New Canal Street, from the South East, panning roughly West to North.
The University campus WAS going to take up all the grassed area in front (except for the sloping grass area in the distance on
the right).
All along the front is New Canal Street, and behind it the huge grass plots that WAS going to contain the Birmingham University
Campus. Dividing the grass plots in half is Banbury Street.
As we pan from left to right we see the railway, then in the distance the Rotunda, then the trees and graveyard of the
existing park (which will be the start of the new City Park - site 12 on the map above). We then see the huge white
Masshouse towers (site 7), then the cranes demolishing Rosa's cafe and Los Canarios restaurant (the buildings have
JUST been demolished - January 2010) and the area where they stood will become part of the city park.
Then we see the Millenium Point / Thinktank building, then the Woodman pub, and on the far right you can just see
Curzon Street station (and on the far far right you can JUST see the Eagle and Tun pub - well the sign anyway).
btw If you look in front of the Woodman pub, on a lamp post - you can see the famous Nuneaton sign which has been
there decades - and does have some sort of notoriety on the internet.
I have now posted 4 panoramas of what WAS going to be the University Campus site, from four different sides. Panorama
4 is from the North West, Panorama 13 is from the South East, Panorama 14 is from the South West, and Panorama 15 is
from the North East.

is it my eyes or does masshouse block M appear to be a bit wobbly???
May be the photo stitching software trying to make the best of my wobbly photography.
I dont use a tripod and I just move across bit by bit so they dont always line up !
Bureau des etrangers January 27th, 2010, 01:15 AM Ahh well i hope its your software and not my eyesight
the more i look the worse it gets, now the rotunda seems to be leaning slightly
Erebus555 January 27th, 2010, 01:21 AM ^^It's the light playing tricks! :)
Although, the left hand side of Masshouse does lean in a bit - I'm guessing that's the stitching software like guilbert says.
Guilbert53 February 1st, 2010, 12:31 PM Here is a new panorama, taken on Saturday 30th January 2010. It is taken from a piece of waste land on the very South West
of the Eastside site, showing almost the whole panorama from West to East. Behind my back is the railway line out of New Street.
As we start to pan from left to right we see a wall blocking most of the view. This is one of the difficult things about taking "before
and after" photographs, you often have to take pictures of uninteresting things, in the hope the "after" shot will look very different.
Behind this wall is the start of the new City Park (area 12 on the map above). On the very left you can just see part of Selfridges
and the Bull Ring.
You can see a panorama taken from the OTHER side of the wall here:
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=48490603&postcount=9
As we continue to pan left to right, after the wall we see Fazeley Street in the foreground, then (behind the trees) the huge white
Masshouse towers (area 7), then the Millenium Point / Thinktank building, then the Woodman pub, then Curzon Street station, then
the Eagle and Tun pub, and on the far right the railway line.
The new city park that starts behind this wall will continue right in front of the Masshouse towers, then down between the Millenium
Point building and the Woodman pub, right to the end of the Eastside site.
The grassed area on the right is the site of the new Birmingham University City Campus (area 2 on the map above). Until a few days
ago cars would be parked around these grass plots, but the roads have now been blocked off, ready for work to start.
I have now posted 4 panoramas of the University Campus site, from four different sides. Panorama 4 is from the North West,
Panorama 13 is from the South East, Panorama 14 is from the South West, and Panorama 15 is from the North East.

Guilbert53 February 20th, 2010, 10:11 AM Time for another panorama.
Here is a new panorama of the Eastside Birmingham University Campus site (area 2 on the map above - since
cancelled), taken from Curzon Street station (standing at the base of one of the pillars) from the North East of
the site.
It was taken on Saturday 30th January 2010 in New Canal Street, panning roughly South to North. All along the
front is New Canal Street, and behind it the huge grass plots that will contain the Birmingham University Campus.
As we pan from left to right on the very left we see part of one of the pillars of Curzon Street station, then the
Eagle and Tun pub, then the railway (and in the distance the Bull Ring and the Rotunda). We then see the trees
and graveyard of the existing park (which will be the start of the new City Park - site 12 on the map above).
We then see the huge white Masshouse towers (site 7), then the site of Rosa's cafe and Los Canarios restaurant (the
buildings have JUST been demolished - January 2010) and the area where they stood will become part of the city park.
Then we see the Woodman pub (which has just reopened), then part of Millenium Point / Thinktank building, and on
the far right you can just see another of the pillars of Curzon Street station.
I have now posted 4 panoramas of the University Campus site, from four different sides. Panorama 4 is from the North
West, Panorama 13 is from the South East, Panorama 14 is from the South West, and Panorama 15 is from the North
East.

Guilbert53 March 7th, 2010, 03:40 PM Here is a brand new panorama, that until recently was not possible as there were buildings in the way.
Went up Eastside today, 7th March 2010, and found they had knocked a number of buildings down, so took this panorama below.
It is taken at the very Eastern end of Eastside, where Curzon Street meets Lawley Middleway at a roundabout. It mostly shows
the Eastside Locks site (site 11 on the plan above).
As we pan from left to right, on the very left we see part of the new student accomodation at the end of Curzon Street. Then
we see yellow signs with writing on them which is one end of the huge Curzon Gate site (site 1).
We then see Curzon Street itself, then the demolished buildings (behind the demolished buildings we can see Selfridges, the
Rotunda, Masshouse and Millenium Point).
Through the trees you can just see the Moby Dick's pub, then behind the bus stop Belmont Row and the canal house (with the
white side), then the Victorian offices (with the tower), then on the far right Lawley Middleway going off to the distance.
Although it cannot be seen, the canal runs through this site (under Curzon Street, behind the demolished buildings, under the
canal building with the white side, then under Belmont Row). This site will eventually become the Eastside Locks development.

ROYAL BLUE March 7th, 2010, 05:22 PM Thats one of my favorite Pano's! It shows the sheer scale of Eastside. Huge.
Guilbert53 March 9th, 2010, 02:54 PM Another new panorama, that was again not possible until recently as there were buildings in the way. These buildings
have JUST been demolished.
This picture was taken on 7th of March 2010 and shows roughly the same area as panorama 16 above, but from a
different angle. It mostly shows the Eastside Locks site (site 11 on the plan above).
This picture was taken at the very Eastern end of Eastside, standing on the steps of the new Curzon Gate student
accomodation on Curzon Street.
As we pan from left to right we see Curzon Street going off to the left. You can just see Curzon Street station behind
the trees, then the Masshouse flats, then the huge Millenium Point building. In the foreground we then see the site of
the demolished buildings.
Behind the demolished buildings we can see Moby Dick's pub, then the Victorian offices (with the tower). Between Moby
Dick's pub and the Victorian Offices you can see the red hoardings that are the site of the multi story car park that is
currently being built behind Millenium Point.
As we continue to pan right we see the canal house (with the white side) then on the far right you can see Lawley
Middleway going off to the distance.
Although it cannot be seen, the canal runs through this site (under Curzon Street where the red car is, behind the
demolished buildings, under the canal building with the white side, then it turns and follows the left side of Lawley
Middleway). This whole site will eventually become the Eastside Locks development.

Guilbert53 March 11th, 2010, 08:32 PM This panorama was taken on Sunday March 7th 2010.
It was taken right in the middle of the Curzon Park site (site 1 on the plan above), with my back to the railway line,
and showing the HUGE site that is available. From the very left of the picture, to the very right, is the whole Curzon
Park site.
On the very left you can see the railway line, then the Rotunda, and next is the Eagle and Tun pub (the red brick building
with the sloping tiled roof -the building next door is being knocked down). The area behind the Eagle and Tun pub WAS
the site of the Birmingham University Campus (site 2 on the plan above) before they moved it.
Then we see the huge white Masshouse flats, then Curzon Street station, then the Millenium Point building. To the right
of the Millenium Point building is the Victorian factory, then a long gap to the new student accomodation, and finally the
railway line again on the right.
The huge gap beween the Victorian building and the student accomodation is mostly the Eastside Locks development
(site 11 on the plan above).

Guilbert53 March 29th, 2010, 12:42 PM Time for another panorama.
This is the Millenium Point multi-storey car park as it was on Sunday March 28th 2010.
I am standing at the "back" of the Millenium Point building, with Jennens Road on the very left (but out of shot). I am facing roughly East.
This is a similar view to panorama 8 that I posted earlier (but from a slightly different position).

Guilbert53 March 30th, 2010, 11:28 AM Here is a brand new panorama, taken on Sunday 28th March 2010.
It is taken at the very Eastern end of Eastside, on Lawley Middleway. It shows the Eastside Locks site (site 11 on the plan above).
As we pan from left to right, on the very left we see the new student accomodation, Curzon Gate, at the end of Curzon Street,
then you can see the canal house, then the Moby Dick's pub, then Millenium Point, then various university buildings, then the
Victorian offices (with the tower).
Just to the left of the Victorian building you can see the new Aston University student accomodation with the scaffolding partly
removed.
Between the Millenium Point building and the Victorian offices you can see the red hoardings that are the site of the multi story car
park that is currently being built behind Millenium Point (car park site shown in panorama 19 above).
This whole site in the foreground will eventually become the Eastside Locks development.
Panorama 20) Complete view of the Eastern end of Eastside
http://i664.photobucket.com/albums/vv10/guilbert53/Pan62small.jpg
Guilbert53 March 31st, 2010, 11:32 AM Yesterday I posted a panorama (number 20) of the complete Eastern end of Eastisde, but a large white fence ran right across
the view. So today I am posting roughly the same view, but the OTHER side of the fence. This was taken on Sunday 28th
March 2010.
The picture is slightly strange in that the sun was behind the cloud when I started the panorama (on the left), but the sun was
fully out by the time I finished (on the right).
I need the sun behind the cloud at the start of the picture because the low sun hangs right over the railway line on the left,
glaring into the camera lens.
The whole area in front is the Eastside Locks site (area 11 on the plan at the start of this topic).
The description of the view is pretty much the same as panorama 20 above, except you can now see the road running across
the picture (from left to right) which is Belmont Row (it runs right up to the Victorian factory). The road in the middle of the
picture, runnning AWAY from the camera, is Pitt Street.
The canal runs from the left (behind the new student accomodation), UNDER the canal house at the end of Pitt Street, then
UNDER Belmont Row, then it goes off to the right, behind that white brick wall.

Guilbert53 April 3rd, 2010, 12:23 PM Here is panorama 22, a new "view" I have never posted before. This was taken on Sunday 28th March 2010. I am standing
in Priory Queensway with my BACK to Argos, facing roughly North East.
It shows the undeveloped Masshouse site in the foreground, with a whole range of University buildings in the background,
finishing off with the two private residential Masshouse buildings on the right.
I am no expert on the University buildings but I will have a go. Most of the main buildings on the left are part of Aston
University. The modern red curved building on the left is the Lakeside residency building (with some older residency buildings
behind), and the small square building next to it is the Chemical Engineering building.
Between these two buildings you can see more student accomodation being built (it is currently covered in scaffolding,
but this is in the process of being removed).
The next building, with the curved frontage, is Matthew Boulton College, then a small gap (Jennens Road goes through
the gap), then we see Jennens Court (more student accomodation), and then a small building for Birmingham City
University with a small lion on it (I have no ideas what this building is).
Then in the distance you can see Curzon Gate (a red terracota coloured building with a white upper part), which is yet
more student accomodation.
Finally on the right two white Masshouse towers, both residential flats. In front of the left tower they are just begining work
on the new magistrates courts.

Sandblast April 3rd, 2010, 06:58 PM Nice picture ^^ ... but it won't 'sell' Aston University to any students that are dithering where to go and spend their next 3 or 4 years studying!!!
Guilbert53 April 20th, 2010, 09:53 PM A view I have never posted before, taken on Saturday 17th April 2010.
I am standing at the back of Jennens Court student accomodation (which is on Jennens Road), looking South.
A small area in the foreground has been cleared of grass, but as yet I am not sure what they are building, maybe
a car park. The area behind the cleared area is planned to become the new Eastside City Park, which will actually
run right across this picture
The road going down the left is Grosvenor Street, and the road going down on the right (in front of the buildings
and behind the pile of earth) is Fox Street (Rosa's Cafe would have been on the corner before they demolished it).
As we pan from left to right, on the very left is part of the Millenium Point building, then the red building is the
Woodman pub, with Curzon Street station behind.
The huge grass area in front was planned to be the site of the Birmingham University campus, before the High Speed
train (HS2) was announced, so now who knows what will be built there. Behind the grass is the Eagle and Tun pub
(red building).
On the right, behind the pile of earth, stood Rosa's Cafe and Los Canarios restaurant, which were recently demolished,
but the old buildings that are left will remain. Behind the old buildings you can just see part of Masshouse (white building).
The building on the very right is the back of a Birmingham City University building. You can see the front of it in Panorama
22 (with the lion on it).

Guilbert53 April 23rd, 2010, 07:03 PM Here is another new view I have never posted before. I took this last Saturday (17th April 2010) about 8am. This panorama
covers a huge area, and I must say I am quite pleased with it.
This was taken at the base of the Masshouse building, and covers a wide sweep, almost a 270 degree view, from South East right
round to North.
Lets look at the view from left to right. Note: much of the plan for this area may change due to the High Speed rail ink (HS2), but I
will detail the view as it is planned today.
On the very left we see a small part of the Masshouse building, the road running in the foreground is Masshouse Lane. We then see
a whole range of trees and grass that will become part of the Eastside City park.
Then in the foreground we see a derilict site (behind the wooden fence) which is planned to be a hotel. Behind this is an existing
building called Island House. Just behind Island house you can see a temporary car park (currently empty as it was early in the
morning) which is called the City Park Gate site. You can see these plots better in Panorama 2 at the start of this topic.
Then as we pan round we see a road going off to the left (towards the Bull Ring, Moor Street station and the Rotunda). This is
Moor Street Queensway (although Google Maps has it as Moor Street Ringway).
Behind this road we see an ugly brown building which is Dale House (the taller building on the right), and the Albert Street car park
(the lower building on the left). Behind this building is Priory Square shopping centre (including Argos). This whole block is due to
be demolished to become Martineau Galleries.
We then see a road to the right of the brown building (going towards the white building) and this is Priory Queensway.
As we continue to pan round we see some white hoardings, with a sign on it saying Car Park Open. This is currently a temporary
car park but is a continuation of the Masshouse development site (you can see this site better in Panorama 22).
As we reach the right hand side of the picture we see a tall Aston University building, and then on the very right the base of the
Masshouse building again.
I wonder what this view will look like in 5 or 10 years time.

Guilbert53 April 29th, 2010, 11:48 AM Here is another new view I have never posted before. I took this on Saturday 17th April 2010.
This panorama is taken from Northern end of the Masshouse temporary car park, looking roughly South, towards the Masshouse
flats.
You can see the exact spot where I took this picture in Panorama 22. On the very left of Panorama 22 you can see a small hill, with
some bushes on it. The panorama below as taken from this small hill.
As we pan from left to right much of the foreground is the temporary car park, which will eventually be developed. On the very left
we first see Aston University (behind the hoardings), then Jennens Court student accomodation, then another university building
(with the lion on it).
We then see the two Masshouse flats (the magistrates court will soon be built in front of the building on the left). As we continue
right we see Island House (looking very isolated), then behind Island House another temporary car park (which is the City Park Gate
development site), then eventually part of Selfridges.
On the very right we see part of Dale House (currently empty) and the Albert Street car park, which is due to be knocked down and
replaced with Martineau Galleries (one day, but dont hold your breath).
Panorama 25) View from the Masshouse temporary car park

morestoreysplease April 29th, 2010, 11:19 PM That entire carpark could be turned into an enclosed landscaped park with a big screen for summer. In the city centre we don't need eyesores like this.
Erebus555 April 30th, 2010, 12:02 AM It's a good thing that this looks to be the first major office-led development to start moving forward after the recession in this city! :)
Guilbert53 May 3rd, 2010, 08:47 AM Here is a new panorama I have never posted before, taken on 17th April 2010.
This was taken in the temporary car park right up near Moor Street station, the very South Western edge of
the Eastside site. It pans from South West right round to North East.
I usually try to take panoramas that I can then retake AFTER the area has been redeveloped, but I may not
be able to do this one again as the site will eventually be covered in buildings (or the new HS2 train station).
Most of the foreground in this picture is taken up with the temporary car park. If we pan from left to right,
on the very left you can just see the zig zag roof of Moor Street station. Behind that you can see the Bull
Ring, the Pavillions shopping centre (with the Rotunda behind), and Marks & Spencer.
We then see some angular brown buildings (the back of Carrs Lane church centre), then a white building (a
catholic church). We then see the big ugly brown Albert Street car park (with the £5 sign in front) and Dale
House.
We then see a "gap" (with some large buildings behind). The "gap" is the Masshouse temporary car park (see
panorama 25), then the two white Masshouse flats. As we get to the far right we see the Fox and Grapes
public house (currently closed).

Guilbert53 May 6th, 2010, 10:48 AM Here is a new panorama I have never posted before, taken on 17th April 2010.
It is taken right in the centre of what is currently the Eastside Locks site, though the plans for this site may change.
This panorama covers the view from roughly West on the left to East on the right. The road running along the foreground is Penn
Street.
As we pan from left to right, on the very left we see the Moby Dick's pub (currently closed). The road going to the right of the pub
is Gopsal Street, the road going to the left of the pub is a continuation of Penn Street.
After the pub we see the Millenium Point building, then some red hoarding which is where they are building a multi-storey car park.
Behind the car park site is Jennens Road (out of view), and then we see the new Aston University student accomodation (still with
scaffolding on it).
As we continue to pan round we see the derelict Victorian offices, then on the far right we see a brick wall. The road in front of this
wall is Belmont Row, behind this wall is the canal (which is where the name "Eastside Locks site" comes from). Behind the brick wall
and canal is the road Lawley Middleway.
Panorama 27) View from Penn Street in Eastside

morestoreysplease May 6th, 2010, 11:07 AM Great shot Guilbert! I really think you should approach the Council about an exhibition of timeline photography - there must be several others with similar interests.
BrummieLad May 7th, 2010, 11:57 AM Shame about them enjoying demolishing decent architecture.
Guilbert53 May 23rd, 2010, 11:56 AM Here is a brand new panorama, taken today, Sunday 23rd May 2010, at 9.30 am (only 90 minutes ago).
This shows the planned site of the VTP200 tower (shown as plot 10 on the "map" at the start of this topic).
VTP stands for Vertical Theme Park, but there is some doubt that this tower will ever be built.
However, as it stands it is still "in plan" so let's have a look at the site (this is not the most exciting panorama
ever but will help people understand the various "plots" in Eastside).
This photograph was taken in the surface car park of the Millenium Point building (you can see the Millenium
Point building on the left). Behind me is Curzon Street, and to the right you can just see some railings that
run alongside Cardigan Street.
In the distance you can see some red hoarding, this encloses a site where they are currently building a multi
storey car park, and when that is completed the surface car park in the foreground will no longer be used.
The Eastside City Park is planned to run along the FRONT of the Millenium Point building, and will continue in
the foreground of this picture, covering the area where I am standing, where the grey car is in front, and then
off to the right.
So this is the VTP 200 plot, only about 250 metres square, bordered in front by the Eastside city park, on the
left by the Millenium Point building, at the rear by the multi storey car park, and on the right by Cardigan Street.
If VTP is NOT built, you wonder will be become of this plot.

Guilbert53 June 2nd, 2010, 08:30 PM Here is a new panorama I have never posted before, taken on the 31st May 2010 (a rather dull overcast day).
It is taken from Jennens Road, looking towards the only two major building projects going on in Eastside.
I am facing roughly South East and the panorama covers the view from roughly North East to South West. The road running
along the foreground is Jennens Road.
As we pan from left to right, on the very left (behind the huge advertising sign) we can just see the fire damaged Victorian
factory. Then we see the red hoarding that is surrounding the building site for the new multi-storey car park - called the
Cardigan Street Car Park. You can see a close up view of the multi-storey car park building site here:
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=57886195&postcount=198
As we continue to pan right we see the huge mass of the Millenium Point building, and in front of it the surface coach park
(being built as part of the multi storey car park project). Continuing right we see the new entrance / exit road that has been
built onto Jennens Road.
We then see the blue hoarding that is surrounding the building site for the Ormiston Academy for performaing art. You can see a
close up view of the Ormiston Academy building site here:
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=57454971&postcount=94
Finally on the very right we see the fairly new student accodation called Jennens Court.

Guilbert53 September 4th, 2010, 11:00 PM Been a while since we had an Eastside panorama, so here we are.
This was taken today (4th September 2010) and is an update to the picture above.
It is taken from Jennens Road, looking towards the only two major building projects going on in Eastside, the Cardigan Street Car Park
(on the left) and the Ormiston Academy for Performing Art (on the right).
In the centre you can see the huge mass of the Millenium Point building, and in front of it the surface coach park which now seems to
be open (they have removed the fencing that you can see round the site in the picture above).
Panorama 30) View from Jennens Road in Eastside

Guilbert53 September 13th, 2010, 02:53 PM Another Eastside panorama, taken on the 4th September 2010. A very wide panorama so you will need to scroll across to see it all.
This is the very east side of Eastside.
The road all along the foreground is Belmont Row, and I am standing roughly where it meets Penn Street, looking North East.
This is the site of the Eastside Locks development (assuming it gets built), the Eastern side of it.
Although it cannot be seen, the canal runs along much of this picture. It enters about a third of a way into the left of the picture, then
runs in FRONT of the wall with the windows in it (the buildings behind have been demolished), then runs BEHIND the low wall on the right
of the picture, before going UNDER Belmont Row on the far right of the picture.
Running along the back of the picture (unseen behind the white fence) is part of the Birmingham ring road, Lawley Middleway.
You can see the REVERSE of this picture, facing West looking INTO the Eastside Locks site, here:

Guilbert53 May 2nd, 2011, 08:36 AM Another Eastside panorama, taken on the 1st May 2011. A wide panorama so you will need to scroll across to see it all.
This is the very Western edge of Eastside. This picture was taken with my back to the Fox and Grapes pub (currently closed),
with Park St in front of me. I am facing roughly East / South East.
Work has started on an Eastside City Park, that will run from the Western edge of Eastside (near Moor St station), through Eastside, all the way
to the Millenium Point building.
This panorama shows the very Western end of the planned park, which is already a small existing park.
On the very left you can see the Masshouse buildings, then as you pan right you can just see the entrance to Fazeley St (near the No Entry sign),
then as you continue right you can see the old Curzon St station between the trees, then on the very far right of the picture (under Park St.), is
where the trains come out of New St station going East.
Last year I posted two other panoramas in this topic showing the site of the city park, see Panoramas 11 and 12. Panoramas 4, 23 and 24 also
show areas where the planned park will go.
Note also Panorama 6 is taken from IN the park looking TOWARDS the Fox and Grapes pub (so the opposite to this panorama), and panorama
2 shows this small park from a distance, from on top of the Albert St car park.

ellbrown May 2nd, 2011, 07:05 PM Have you taken a new one on Jennens Road? It has changed quite a lot since your last one above in post #63.

No I was going to wait until the Cardigan St car park and the Ormiston Academy are finished.
Guilbert53 June 8th, 2011, 08:57 PM Here is a new panorama I have never posted before. In fact I took it over a year ago, in May 2010, but never got round to
posting it. It is a panorama so you will need to scroll across to see it all.
I am standing in the middle of Jennens Road (on the central reservation) looking roughly South West towards the centre of
Birmingham.
On the very left are the two Masshouse towers. The Hotel La Tour just behind them had not been started at this time. In
the distance you can see the Rotunda, then as you pan right you can see the ugly brown Albert Street car park and Dale
House.
On the right you can see the tall thin McLaren Building, and on the very right hand side part of an Aston University building.

Guilbert53 September 1st, 2011, 11:24 AM A new panorama, taken yesterday (August 31st 2011), a rather dull overcast day.
It is a panorama so you will need to scroll across to see it all.
This shows the start of the creation of the Eastside City Park.
It was taken with my back the the Eagle and Tun pub, looking roughly North West and North.
The road running left to right is New Canal St, the road running away from the centre of the picture is Banbury St.
On the very left you can see workmen (in Orange jackets) clearing the overgrown trees and shrubs from that area.
In the centre you see the huge area they are starting to fence off.
On the far right you see the Woodman pub.

I think I will call this picture "A study in grey" as there is a lot of grey about.
This shows a complete panorama of the North side of the Eastside complex, taken from Jennens Road. This was taken from the middle of the
Jennens Road dual carridgeway near the "back" of Millenium Point, panning roughly North East to South West.
It shows the new multi story car park on the left, the new Coach park in the centre, and the new Ormiston Academy of Performaing Arts on the right.
Compare this with Panorama 9 from 2009 which is a similar view (though not from exactly the same spot)

ellbrown September 3rd, 2011, 10:01 PM I was wondering for ages when you were going to get that panorama Guilbert. Thought you were waiting for BOA to be finished and opened?
You didn't get the new U-turn in the picture. Assume that you were standing near the u-turn.

Due to holidays etc during August not had much time to come up to Birmingham.
I must also admit that after the riots/looting I became rather anti-Birmingham for a while, so was not keen to come to the city centre.
I have also been taking lots of pictures of Shirley town centre before the Parkgate scheme starts (as you know from my "Parkgate" topic.

I only came in to the city centrego to work (saw lots of smashed windows but over the next few weeks those windows were replaced, some are yet to be done).
I wasn't interested in taking riot related photos.

Yeah I know.
Are there any panoramics you would want to take at or near Aston University such as the Woodcock Sports Centre and the City Council offices? Or the library, Phase II of the student accommodation and the former Central Fire Station?
Guilbert53 November 27th, 2011, 05:34 PM Here is a new panorama I took today, Sunday 27th November 2011.
It was taken from the old Curzon Street station (standing at the base of one of the pillars).
It was taken in New Canal Street, panning roughly South to North. All along the front is New Canal Street, and behind it
the white hoardings enclosing the area that will become the Eastside City Park.
As we pan from left to right on the very left we can just see part of one of the pillars of Curzon Street station, then a small
part of the Eagle and Tun pub, then the railway (and in the distance Selfridges, the Bull Ring and the Rotunda). We then see
the trees and graveyard of the existing park (which will be the start of the new City Park - site 12 on the map above).
We then see the Hote La Tour (with the crane) which is currently being built, then the huge white Masshouse towers (site 7).
Then on the right in the foreground we see the Woodman pub, then part of Millenium Point / Thinktank building, and on the far
right you can just see another of the pillars of Curzon Street station.
Compare this with Panorama 15 which was taken from the same viewpoint on 30th January 2010.
