Damn, you should of posted those foodie pics in the Pagkain thread also. I love indian food as well. I started eating it when I use to hangout with an indian and pakistani friend back on college. Their food is pretty much the same because of the obvious he he.They just call chapati ruti in pakistan.

Medio uneven pa rin ang development, e. Considering ito na nga ang I.T. capital nila. [There's somethin about Indian culture which makes them a natural for IT; para bagang pagong na tinapon sa tubig.] The airport itself is just less than a year old; very brand new... can give some competition to T3. Yung sections ng city for the rich are also very nice pero yung mga nakikita natin sa features na madudumi at poor andiyan pa rin... at least ngayon parang wala akong nakitang mga baka na tumatawid at nakahilata sa calle. Kung sa atin maraming mga asong calle, sa kanila maraming bakang calle (sa ibang mga cities); pero ngayon wala akong nakita.

Yes, they share the same food, race and even language - Urdu (Pakistan) and Hindi (India) are the same spoken tongue; but in written form Urdu is in Arabic whilst Indian Hindi is in Sanskrit. Again politics played a role in the division. I looove Indian food kaya lang madami high carb talaga - like mutton biryani or chicken biryani. But one breakfast item na very healthy is Masala Dosa - one huge parang crepe with pumpkin and veggie/potato mix inside. Seguro kung tumagal pa kami dito ng 1 pang buwan pati mga scents :lol: namin parejas na rin at masasabing naturalised na. :rofl: Nahiya lang akong magtanong pero pansin namin, may iilan ilan ring mga babyboomer at older gen-X men na hindi gumagamit ng deodorant...

You put me on the spot there, mate. Esp now na anghirap pumasok rine heto nga’t 1post/1 thread a day lang ang ration ko? Might take a taglish essay for that pero hayaan mo, pihadong hindi tayo mag-no nosebleed coz mga aquiline at matatangos tayo, buejeje… mahirap coz baka may masagasaang mga extrañero. In a nutshell, even with the BRIC status, I’d still prefer to live in Cebu or Manila any time. :D

I guess what primarily attracts Western, Japanese and Chinese businessmen here are the prospects of a huge market of over a billion people. Dinadaan nila lahat sa scale and quantity para kumita ng tidy profit. As for all the rest of the non-business Western people, what pro’lley attracts them are the Taj Mahal, rich thousand year culture and history, the food, textiles, marble and stone works, the universities and not to mention the magnificent flora and fauna – the Bengal tiger and the elephants, the Himalayas, etc etc. I also do not know what makes Hindi culture click off naturally with I.T., they are famous for that these days. A giant country, it is a land of extremes where the rich are exceedingly rich but the poor are extremely poor. The gap is h-u-g-e at kawawa talaga ang mahihirap.

The wealth of the country did not reach the masa – ang mga mahihirap at mga dukha. What you see in Bollywood, the traditional rich and the modern rich lifestyles ay ganung ganun talaga sa mga wealthy, they are filthy rich ~ Most of them are stunningly gorgeous and beautiful to boot. :yes: ... But on the other hand naman, andun ang mga dirt poor din. Likewise, kung ano ang makikita nyo sa National Geographic at mga magazines about the slums ay ganun talaga, think Slumdog Millionaire. Mas nakakarindi pa nga sa actual dahil mafe-feel nyo ang itim na putik sa sapatos (na hindi ko maintindihan kung ano) while walking pag malapit sa city rivers. Karamihan ng calle ay kulang sa proper pavement at usually dusty. About sa mga public toilets, di bale na at hindi talaga ako makakalapit within 20 feet marami na akong nasasagap na amoy at mga hindi kanais nais na sights. Natural hindi naman ako puedeng magpost ng pangit na pics about sa kapitbahay. Yung mga sidewalk foodstalls makikita nyo ilang beses paulit ulit gamitin ang cooking oil. Buti ngayon bihira na akong makakita ng bakang calle (sa atin asong calle). Kung barumbado ang mga Manila drivers, mas barumbado ang Bombay drivers. If you thought you had seen bad conditions at the slums of Manila, grabe it is even worse in Indian slums. By comparison, mas malilinis naman tingnan ang mga squatters ng Manila con ikumpara sa madudungis talaga na tao at conditions at Indian cities. Not my first time to India, been here several times already in at least 5 different cities. But enuff of CvC... :|

Kung ano ang impression mo ay parejas tayo. Ang hindi ko lamang mawari pa´t maintindihan ay paano nila nakamit ang BRIC status, the nuclear power plus a strong military na hindi naman naka benefit sa vast majority of the masa? :dunno:

About the culture tidbits, did you know that the West won’t admit it but all European languages come from the main branch called the Indo-European Family and are distantly related to Hindi/Urdu? And that most Indians are technically Caucasian by race (not all Caucasians are white and blue eyed). So India is very relevant to the Western mind and psyche. I also noted that the word Vijaya is quite common, people I asked told me its just a common name, or a first name. :)

Kawasaki Fertility Festival/ Kanamara Matsuri
The Kanamara Matsuri (Festival of the Steel Phallus, かなまら祭り?) is an annual Shinto fertility festival held in Kawasaki, Japan in spring. The exact dates vary: the main festivities fall on the first Sunday in April. The penis forms the central theme of the event that is reflected everywhere—in illustrations, candy, carved vegetables, decorations, and a mikoshi parade.

The Kanamara Matsuri is centered around a local penis-venerating shrine once popular among prostitutes who wished to pray for protection against sexually transmitted diseases. It is said that there are divine protections also in business prosperity and the clan's prosperity, easy delivery, marriage, and married couple harmony. There is also a legend of a sharp-toothed demon that hid inside the vagina of a young girl and castrated two young men on their wedding nights (vagina dentata). As a result, the young girl sought help with a blacksmith, who fashioned an iron phallus to break the demon's teeth, leading to the enshrinement of the item.

Today, the festival has become somewhat of a tourist attraction and is used to raise money for HIV research.

^^ Hehe..just a subway ride away. As close as it is, I am guilty of always putting off visiting D.C. Whew.. too many tourists, but man you are right it was lovely.

^^ Speaking of tourists, there was a sea of humanity at the theme parks last Friday. We went to Universal Studios and it was packed! Guess everybody took advantage of the holiday (Good Friday) and took in the sights. Oh, and I can only imagine what the beaches were like this long Easter holiday weekend.

^^ Some friends of ours from Brooklyn (about 30 of them) are there now enjoying the parks. The airfare was too expensive so we decided to go to Orlando till summer. Looks good for tourism dollars in D.C. and Orlando. :okay:

^^ Coming down for the summer, eh? Be ready to stand in long lines in the heat (or rain) at the newest theme park called "The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter" at Universal Studios, should you ever want to check it out. Yeah, looks like people are heading back to the theme parks down here, attendance is up and retail sales in the parks are steadily climbing.

The condo units are on the move again, at a bargain price almo$t at face value. :)

Ah yes. I remember Alexandria as the capital of Ptolemic Egypt, with the Ptolemy Dynasty being the last Dynasty and it's most famous member was Cleopatra, also the last Queen of Egypt. The Pharaoh's Lighthouse (7 wonders) also used to be there as well as the great library of Alexandria in ancient times. Nice pics...

Catalonia, alongside Basque Country and Galicia was set apart from the rest of Spain as a Historical nationality and given the ability to accede to autonomy automatically, which resulted in the 1979 Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia. The rest of Spain, in a process spearheaded by Andalusia, followed by Asturias and Leon, completed by 1985, carved itself into 14 additional Autonomous Communities by drafting their own Statutes of Autonomy. After 2003 there has been a round of amendments to the various Statutes of Autonomy (notably, alongside Catalonia's, those of Aragon, the Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands).

Both the 1979 Statute of Autonomy and the current one, approved in 2006, state that Catalonia, as a nationality, exercises its self-government constituted as an autonomous community in accordance with the Constitution and with the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia, which is its basic institutional law.

The Preamble of the 2006 Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia states the Parliament of Catalonia defined Catalonia as a nation, but that the Spanish Constitution recognizes Catalonia's national reality as a nationality. :cheers2::cheers2:

Catalonia

La Diada de Sant Jordi, also known as el dia de la rosa (The Day of the Rose) or el dia del llibre (The Day of the Book) is a Catalan holiday held on 23 April, with similarities to Valentine's Day and some unique twists that reflect the antiquity of the celebrations.

The main event is the exchange of gifts between sweethearts, loved ones and respected ones. Historically, men gave women roses, and women gave men a book to celebrate the occasion—"a rose for love and a book forever."

In modern times, the mutual exchange of books is customary. Roses have been associated with this day since medieval times, but the giving of books is a more recent tradition originating in 1923 when a bookseller started to promote the holiday as a way to commemorate the nearly simultaneous deaths of Miguel Cervantes and William Shakespeare on 23 April 1616.

Barcelona is the publishing capital of both Catalan and Spanish languages and the combination of love and literacy was quickly adopted.

In Barcelona's most visited street, La Rambla, and all over Catalonia, thousands of stands of roses and makeshift bookstalls are hastily set up for the occasion. By the end of the day, some four million roses and 800,000 books would have been purchased. Most women will carry a rose in hand, and half of the total yearly book sales in Catalonia take place on this occasion.

In English, Sant Jordi means St. George.

I noted that the Catalans seem to take great pride in their heritage, and they tend to display the Catalan flag on their houses and everywhere more than the national spanish flag... oi, kanindut nga idea para sa atong Sugbo... hinaut makahimo pud ta og atong kaugalingong flag... ako na lang unyang ipatik ang akong idea sa atong sugbuanon flag.

Nice set of pictures. A couple of months ago the city was covered with snow. It was winter wonderland. :) It's actually my first time in Spain. I was supposed to be somewhere else after the West Coast, but we had to reroute far down south. And then we took a bus to where we were going. We couldn't even get to the trains since most train tickets were already sold out! :lol:

Anyway, I made the huge mistake of referring to Catalan as a dialect. The lady bar attendant didn't let it pass (she was a language major ata sa Univ. of Barcelona); and I was given an impromptu lecture that Catalan is a Romance language (not a dialect) and co-official in her country. Furthermore, the dialects are these 2 guys, or somethin like that - Western Catalan & Eastern Catalan.

I just got one minor thingy against the Bus Turistico drivers. Whenever an important scenery like Gaudi's building or Gaudi's dragon gate comes along, I noticed the bus would seemingly accelerate and my camera gets a slanted picture or worse, a large tree in front. Waaa. Then it only slows down to a nice pace when there's a lull, no scenes to shoot. We were unfortunate coz La Sagrada Familia had a major renovation in the church interiors goin on, we only got to see the exteriors and the basement museum.

^ Barcelona is wow! :) Yup, the whole spirit of the city seems to be moulded for the arts, thanks to the many artists living there esp the works of this guy - Antonio Gaudi.

Oh, I forgot to mention. My impression from walkin La Rambla, with the many students, liberals, writers, and intellectuals showing their works ~ was that the city seemed to be liberal to left-leaning, or socialist, or somethin like that...

If there're two things noticeable about the city, the city is full of artworks and trees! Whoa, if I tried to take a snapshot of an avantgarde building, I'd get a good pic of a tree instead ~ the way the bus turistico drivers drive. Best way for shots is to get off and walk on foot. The Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família (official Catalan name; Spanish: Templo Expiatorio de la Sagrada Familia; "Expiatory Church of the Holy Family"), often simply called the Sagrada Família, is a massive, privately-funded Roman Catholic church that has been under construction in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain since 1882 and is not expected to be complete until at least 2026. A portion of the building's interior is scheduled to open for public worship and tours by September 2010.

Considered the master-work of renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926), the project's vast scale and idiosyncratic design have made it one of Barcelona's (and Spain's) top tourist attractions for many years. The church is to be consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI on November 7, 2010, during his visit to Santiago de Compostela and Barcelona.

I’ll try to make my rant short. :rant: :lol::lol:
There is a real reason why the beautiful classic Tagalog words or nouns are spelt this way , to wit ~ lalaki (lelaki in Melayu), hari, puri, yari, mithi, dalamhati, kalapati, kasapi, lipi, uri, pighati and def NOT the anglosaxon way = lalaky, hary, pury, yary, mithy, dalamhaty, kalapaty, kasapy, lipy, ury, pighaty etc etc...

Likewise, some Spanish nouns are spelt this way, to wit ~ Gaudi, Legazpi, Arlegui, Elazegui, Eizmendi (San Miguel), Goiti, Xavi, Nani (dating BF ni Ate Glo ba yun?), Conti, Iturbirri, … (latin) Mardi Gras, Noli Me Tangere, and def NOT the anglosaxon spellings = Gaudy, Legazpy, Arleguy, Elazeguy, Eizmendy, Goity, Xavy, Nany, Conty, Iturbirry, Mardy Gras, Noly Me Tangere etc etc … The usage of “y” endings is uncommon in latin and hispanic spellings. :)

The reason is that both Tagalog and Spanish are phonetic languages ~ meaning, they are spelt the way they are spoken. During the transition from the Tagalog Alibata to the Spanish Roman alphabet, the old town of Bai remained the Tagalog Bai. The Spanish merely copied the spelling from the Tagalogs as it was easy for them to pronounce the same anyway... Bai became Bay after the arrival of the English speakers. :)

I don't think this is OT because it promotes travel to that scenic province. Given the chance, I would love to tour it again (esp the Caliraya area).

I sure am glad many Filipinos aren’t confused and know the original name. La Provincia de Laguna de Bai ~ After having visited 14 churches there last year, I must admit it is one of the most beautiful and scenic provinces readily accessible from Metro Manila. Laguna is 30 kilometers away from Manila and is bounded by the province of Rizal in the north, Batangas in the south, Quezon Province in the east and Cavite in the west. The province was named after "La Laguna" which is Spanish for lagoon. It was officially christened "La Provincia de Laguna de Bai", after Bai (Bay), the largest town along the lake and also the first provincial capital.

First established in 1770 by Father Junípero Serra and Gaspar de Portolà (governor of Baja and Alta California (1767–1770), explorer and founder of San Diego and Monterey), Monterey served as the capital of California from 1777 to 1849, under the flags of Spain and Mexico. Variants of the city's name are recorded as Monte Rey and Montery. Portola erected the Presidio of Monterey to defend the port against an expected Russian invasion.

John Ernst Steinbeck, Jr. (February 27, 1902 – December 20, 1968) was an American writer. He wrote the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Grapes of Wrath (1939) and the novella Of Mice and Men (1937). He wrote a total of twenty-seven books, including sixteen novels, six non-fiction books and five collections of short stories. In 1962, Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Literary Arts. Notable artists who made the area their home include John Steinbeck, who grew up in Salinas, and lived in nearby Pacific Grove for many years as well as the city of Monterey for a very short time. Steinbeck immortalized Monterey with his novels Cannery Row, Tortilla Flat and East of Eden, and his play Of Mice and Men. Among Steinbeck's friends were some of the city's more colorful characters, including Ed Ricketts, a marine biologist, and Bruce Ariss, artist and theatre enthusiast who designed and built the Wharf Theater. After Rickett's death, the new owner and a group of his friends would assemble in Rickett's lab for drinks and Jazz music every Wednesday evening. While visiting with the group, San Francisco DJ, Jimmy Lyons, suggested holding a Jazz celebration in Monterey which eventually became the Monterey Jazz Festival.

In 1879, Robert Louis Stevenson spent a short time in Monterey at the French Hotel, during the time he was writing "Amateur Immigrant," "The Old Pacific," "Capital," and "Vendetta of the West." The former hotel, now known as "Stevenson House", is located at 530 Houston Street and features various items that once belonged to the writer.

Wala lang. The place is so serene and tranquil. It reminds me of Glenn Miller. The adjoining neighbourhoods are/ seem to be predominantly upper class and white. Their mall is definitely uppercrust and heck, I don't know many of the exclusive brands settin up shop there. I wasn't able to take pics of the neighbourhood coz I was drivin'... :lol:

Carmel-by-the-Sea, usually called simply Carmel, is a small town in Monterey County, California, United States, founded in 1902 and incorporated in 1916. Situated on the Monterey Peninsula, the town is known for its natural scenery and rich artistic history. In 1906, the San Francisco Call devoted a full page to the "artists, poets and writers of Carmel-by-the-Sea," and in 1910 it reported that 60 percent of Carmel's houses were built by citizens who were "devoting their lives to work connected to the aesthetic arts." Early City Councils were dominated by artists, and the town has had several mayors who were poets or actors, including Herbert Heron, founder of the Forest Theater, bohemian writer and actor Perry Newberry, and actor-director Clint Eastwood, who was mayor for one term, from 1986 to 1988.

Carmel-by-the-Sea is located on the Pacific coast, about 330 miles north of Los Angeles and 120 miles south of San Francisco. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,081.

As of the census of 2000, there are 4,081 people, 2,285 households, and 1,108 families residing in the city. The population density is 3,753.3 people per square mile (1,445.6/km²). There are 3,334 housing units at an average density of 3,066.3/sq mi (1,181.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.58% White, 0.44% Black or African American, 0.32% Native American, 2.25% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 0.91% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. 2.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Beliba gyud ko nimo @mercato. You travelled on places where few people do you did. I drove west coast to east coast round trip but never bother to stop places to smell the flowers or appreciate and enjoy the cities I had passed by along L.A. I-40 & I-95 to NYC. :hammer: :)

^^ but there were also many places where we just zipped thru and sayang I also didn't get the chance to unwind and relax due to time constraints. Like, I'd love to spend more time in Sausalito, Sacramento, Santa Barbara, Milpitas, San Jose.

I am also curious as to what makes these Pacific coast cities tick. I mean, how come Monterey has such a small population and a very laid back town and I don't see anything industrial and largescale and yet the people seem to live comfortable small town middle class lives? How can they do it, and how can the good things be adopted to our own cities.?
