The concrete outcropping throws me off a bit... Looks like a last minute addition to add some extra square footage. The angles and texture on the glass provides plenty of abstraction for me. At least the base looks clean. Regardless I still think its a decent addition to the skyline and will be interesting to watch.

Gonna be a great addition to the skyline

Man, I don't know how many vertical schools there are in the US, but looking at this and seeing the proposed floor use makes me giddy.

It's a tale of two buildings. The glassy portion is obviously beautiful. The concrete side, I'm not so sure about.

The north side isn't pretty, but remember that Buckingham Phase II will rise next door and is only ~50ft shorter.

Also, the less attractive side will not be visible in the "postcard" shot from Adler.

For high school juniors & seniors heading out on college visits, a tour that shows off the living accommodations that Roosevelt will have to offer should provide a lasting impression on many of those visiting students, which in turn could provide an added boost to the schools continuing efforts to attract students. Construction is a bit behind schedule, as initially it was to begin this past summer. But regardless, I'm thrilled to see this coming to fruition.

Designed by SCB, it will be located on the SE corner of Wabash and Van Buren. The building to its immediate right in this rendering is Roosevelt University Tower. Just imagine how improved this intersection will be once (if) these buildings are complete.

This is probably an either hate or love project. I gotta say, this looks hideous to me, especially that first rendering. I'm not against modern architecture, but this is too weird for me. Perhaps it will grow on me

^^ The first rendering is probably my favorite. I love the shape & coloring. The only thing that I'm less than thrilled with is the northern side, but as already pointed out, most of that will hopefully be covered by the proposed tower next to it.

(though if I'm being extra picky, I wish the RU tower had an extra 31 feet to make the 500 foot mark) ;)

The corner sucks. When I wlak down Wabash at night here, I am lucky to see a warm body. There are surface lots on 3 corners and the NEC is the CNA building. I hope this kicks off development in this area, but I have a feeling it will ultimately be more development for the schools with DePaul and Robert Morris right there as well.

Can you imagine rolling out of bed and into class within about 2 minutes? So much time I've wasted doing such silly things as walking 20 minutes to class.

J/K - I really like this idea for a verticle school! I'm just afraid that this may cause some students to literally never leave this building for days (if not weeks) on-end. Is there a park nearby that students can visit?

The Urban Politician

^ I kind of wonder why Roosevelt built that Schaumburg campus.

They should have focused on one locale for their University, and being that they already were established downtown, should have made that their place of choice.

Mr Downtown

^Because not everyone gets a college degree by living away from home for four years. A lot of kids—especially first-generation Americans and first-in-the-family college attendees—live at home for at least part of their college careers. Others must work while they're in school. Roosevelt asks, at every graduation, for those who are the first in their family to go to college to stand. The response brings a tear to the eye.

Roosevelt also offers MBAs and other graduate degrees in Schaumburg, where they can be convenient to the suburban office workers. Its new pharmacy program will only be offered in Schaumburg.

This new building fronts the west side of the block (on Wabash Ave). On the east side of the block is Michigan Ave and then Grant Park. So yes, students will definitely have a park to visit.

Sweet. I love it when they do renderings from unusual angles, instead of the wide shots that show the full-height building in all of its glory... This style really captures how the average citizen will see and experience the new building far better than a skyline shot.

On the other hand... WTF is with that party wall? Somebody forgot to fix the UV mapping.

We then only FOUR underconstruction projects now?
Atleast in the highrise category.
Very slow. But atleast not dead

yea i agree, I wish/hope developers pick up the pace by next year. There's still 3 parts that need major development that's being ignored (like River North along LaSelle st., majority of the South Loop from Roosevelt to Van buren, & down by Chinatown...)

I love tall buildings, but I would have just hoped for an additional 31 feet to get it up to 500 feet. Oh well. I'm still excited for this glassy highrise (save for the north face of it... hopefully another highrise will rise directly next to it soon).

1. Would like to see the projected visual impact as seen from Lake Michigan.
2. How does a structure like this impact the overall health of an institution like Roosevelt?
3. How many universities and students exist in the Loop? Would very much like to see an estimated population. Just started dating a girl from "East-West University" on Michigan Ave, just South of Balboa Ave. Never heard of it until she brought me inside of what appeared to be an old, broken-down building. Inside, it was alive and full of innovation and educational energy. If you're judging a book by its cover, Chicago's a Playmate. If you're judging a book by its content, she's a Nobel Prize winner.

3. How many universities and students exist in the Loop? Would very much like to see an estimated population.

Chicago Loop Alliance estimated a student pop of 65,000+ in 2009 and that these "institutions that together occupy nearly 8 million total gross square feet
of Loop real estate".

There's a full report of High Ed impact on the Loop by the CLA here (http://www.chicagoloopalliance.com/db_images/includes/2272009%20Higher%20Education%20Study%20Final%20Report%2011-9-09.pdf). [PDF Link]

Also of interest I came across this image on ENRMidwest:
http://midwest.construction.com/images/2011/03/0307_34a.jpg
Part of the caption reads "Shown is a historic facade that will be integrated into the $118-million tower"...haven't really heard of that before. Did some digging, and found this: "The façade of the former Fine Arts Annex, created in 1924 by renowned architect Andrew Rebori, will be preserved and will become part of the University bookstore entrance at the north end of the new building. " Better shot of the facade here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/29393526@N03/4418174889/in/set-72157623364764578).

Lastly, here are some recent shots I found on Flickr. (A user on there named Laura_1976 has chronicled the progress of this site from Nov 2009 till now, and has updated every few weeks. Full set here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/29393526@N03/sets/72157623364764578/))
