how often does it rain over there? is it bit like Miami in terms of rain and temps?

I guess so. We're often referred to as the Miami of Australia.

We really don't get much rain here, though summer is our wet season, so I'm looking forward to a bit of rain just to green the place up a bit. We just came out of a 10 year drought. And winters are really, really dry.

All in all, much like Miami.

BTW is there a lot of crime there like in many parts of miami??

The crime rate is quite low and there aren't any "bad" neighborhoods. The Gold Coast has a lot of Australia's most expensive property along it's man-made canals. Not bad for a city of 600,000.

I do agree. They're embarrassing. Sometimes I think that government forget that people who aren't tourists live on the Gold Coast and we don't always want to walk around having to see these basically naked women.

^^That was the first that I can ever remember. They're extremely rare along coastal cities, however in outback Australia, I'm told they're quite common. For the dust to move from outback Australia, to Sydney, then 700km north to the Gold Coast is a long way.

Gold Coast is amazing!

The crime rate is quite low and there aren't any "bad" neighborhoods. The Gold Coast has a lot of Australia's most expensive property along it's man-made canals. Not bad for a city of 600,000.

I went to the beach today and was sitting there waiting for the latest addition to the Royal Australian Air Force to fly over (as you can see in the pictures, there's 5x F/A-18 Super Hornets, flying in formation with 4x F-111's). Was quite surprised by the amount of people on the beach to see them, considering it was midday Friday.

aha, you get sick of living here after a while. :)

The winter water temperatures, compared to other places in the world, are warmer though I would still use a wetsuit for a surf. If you were just going to paddle in the water I wouldn't bother. :)

Why surfers paradise is called like that?? Is one of the worst if not THE worst spot of surfing in the GC.

It's really not that bad. Most locals tend to avoid it so they don't have to battle with tourists for waves etc. Bearing in mind that in 2008, Surfers Paradise was named the best surf beach in the world. (Even though I think that Kirra is one of the best beach for surfing in Australia, and probably the world) :)

Gold Coast is really colorful and the beaches are perfect (i think they're even more beautiful that the ones in Brazil)

but for me, is my least favourite city in Oz....(maybe if i knew it, i would love it)

It's different to most cities though, which is what people tend to like about it. If you like to surf, if you like the beach, if you like that laid back feeling... the Gold Coast may be the city for you.

That said, I don't think many countries in the world of similar population could offer so many different lifestyles. :)

how many people get eaten by sharks annually?

In Australia or on the Gold Coast alone?

No one has been killed by a shark on any of the Gold Coast's ocean beaches since 1964 (and to this day, only 3 people have ever been killed by a shark on the ocean beaches -- one in 1937, 1958 and 1964). However, two people have been killed by Bull Sharks in the Gold Coast's canals.

The Gold Coast is in a sunny, humid sub-tropical climate (the same as Brisbane) and prides itself on having on average 250-300 days of sunshine each year.

As for culture. The city plays host to many of the country's biggest music festivals, sporting and recreational events. Surf culture, and Beach culture are also deeply engraved into the Gold Coast lifestyle.

It's often compared to Miami, though on a smaller scale. The Gold Coast has been dubbed "Australia's Holiday Playground" as it is the tourism mecca of the country. The total amount of tourists to the city last year was 10 million.

It seems a good city to live, I read it's humid but it has not too hot summers and warm winters, i guess this city is growing faster than other australian cities.

and What about sharks??? white sharks???, is there any risk surfing in those beaches???

Well, in a nutshell, yes. But you're more likely to be attacked by lightning than a shark. A Shark Control Program run by the Queensland Government manages a range of nets, bait hooks and other preventative measures designed to keep sharks away from people swimming at the beach. There hasn't been a fatal shark attack in the waters off the Gold Coast since 1964 and only three other confirmed non-fatal shark attacks (ranging from small bites to decent wounds) have been recorded. Even shark sightings are rare on the open beach, with only one or two large sharks even being seen by average beach goers each year and if a shark is spotted (either by life guards or aerial surveillance), swimmers are quickly warned.

However, shark sightings in the canals are very common and since 2002 there have been two fatal shark attacks in canals and inland lakes.

Gold Coast (600,000) - 830,000 intl. tourists

So to answer your question, yes, most visitors are Australia, however the Gold Coast still does well in the international market.

It doesn't rain often, but when it does rain it generally "rains". We may get a few hundred millimeters of water in a 24 hour period and flood (though the South East of Queensland is well adapted to floods). Cold, well not really, but our winter averages something like 18c during the day (I think...).

How many domestic Australian tourists visits Gold Coast each year?

5.35 million domestic tourists annually visit the Gold Coast (based on 07/08 numbers). It's no doubt increased since then.

Its a promising city with a great stretch of beach. But It looks very cut off from the road. I'd like to take a beach drive along the coast, and from what I see, that's not possible. A part of the beach could be opened up more for pedestrians and less abled people as well.
