Timor Leste launches ASEAN Secretariat

INDONESIA: Indonesia's former province Timor Leste launched the "ASEAN National Secretariat" in Dili to prepare for its accession into the 11-member Southeast Asian bloc, said a press release made available by Jakarta's ASEAN Secretariat on Monday.

President Jose Ramos Horta said the secretariat, which was built on South Korea's financial assistance, would be used to train Timor Leste officials ahead of its accession into the 41-year-old grouping that ratified the use of sanctions to enforce its rules last December.

He said Timor Leste had secured support for its accession during his recent visits to Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia.

"We wish to join ASEAN as soon as possible. Timor Leste's ties to Southeast Asia and ASEAN are based on three factors: geography, desire of the people, and clear government policy," he said in the press release. - JP
