View Full Version : Chepauk | MAC Cricket Stadium | U/C
Fusionist December 20th, 2009, 03:55 PM London-based practice Hopkins Architects has started work on the first phase of the new reconstruction project of M. A. Chidambaram Stadium at Chepauk in Chennai, capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
Three stands on the eastern edge of the cricket stadium site have now been demolished and piling has commenced, signaling a new chapter in the development of this historic ground.
The first of four phases, which will see the complete reconstruction of the Chidambaram Stadium by mid-2011, comprises three new reinforced concrete stands. These stands are designed to accommodate 10,000 spectators and 24 hospitality boxes under translucent PTFE membrane roofs.
The stadium, popularly known as Chepauk Stadium is the home ground of the Tamil Nadu cricket team and also for IPL's Chennai Super Kings.

Construction has started on the first phase of the new Cricket Stadium at Chepauk in Chennai. Three stands on the eastern edge of the site have now been demolished and piling has commenced, signalling a new chapter in the development of this historic ground.
The first of four phases which will see the complete re-construction of the Chidambaram Stadium by mid-2011, comprises three new reinforced concrete stands accommodating 10,000 spectators and 24 hospitality boxes under translucent PTFE membrane roofs. When finally built out, the 43,000 seat stadium will help to bring back the "swing" for which Chennai is so famous, and the sporting chances it brings to the game.

Yes would like to see a render too.

shows how slow SSC Chennai forumers are :(
The idea of this sub-section is to bring to notice and follow projects from scratch, especially big construction projects. I am amazed no one even bothered to start a new thread for this huge project.
Same way the Marina project, which is one of the largest urban landscaping project Chennai has ever taken, went unnoticed until the project was almost complete. I encourage forumers to keenly follow construction projects, especially buildings of public interest ( ie. library/assembly/stadiums etc ) and update them regularly in separate threads.

I think that's a bit harsh - as far as the Marina reconstruction was concerned, there was no separate thread, but there was tons of discussion, news posts, images, etc.
As far as the Chepauk one was concerned, I'm surprised at how fast it's happened. Was there very much in the news that we missed? I didn't think so.

well I do admit I might sound harsh but aren't we the premier webforum that covers extensively the building project updates in Chennai ? We need to act as leaders, not followers. Missing out such projects, or simply paying little attention to such big ventures in the 'chennai projects update' thread is not the way forward is it ? Hence my criticism.
If you check out the foreign city sub-forums or even the Mumbai sub-forum you can see a better index of all the major construction projects in separate threads. Not sure why it is not the same in Chennai forum.

sampath1986 December 30th, 2009, 07:54 AM Well, i hope the new structure which is going to come up does not have those big pillars, which is an irritation while watching the match....^^
sridhar_n January 2nd, 2010, 06:31 AM Well, i hope the new structure which is going to come up does not have those big pillars, which is an irritation while watching the match....^^
Considering the climate in Chennai, shelters will be inevitable. Yes, they have to design it in a way which will minimise the pillars. Yes, those pillars were indeed a big nuisance. I hope they will also build good press box and other amenities for the spectators.
Jim856796 January 3rd, 2010, 12:31 PM I hope the design of the new stand is repeated throughout the stadium. After all, it is considered a "complete" reconstruction.
Indian Sun January 3rd, 2010, 03:56 PM All the stands will be rebuilt, but it is not necessary that the design may be continuous as it was earlier. My guess is that since A,B and C stands were demolished first in one phase, they might form one particular stand.
I wonder why Hopkins haven't released the render yet. Their Pune MCA Stadium project has very clear renders.
gvijayan January 20th, 2010, 04:29 PM Is the stadium going to be in a position to host the IPL-3 edition games to be conducted this March? I was under the impression that IPL-2010 games will not be hosted in Chennai, but the fixtures say that there are going to be games.

Anniyan January 21st, 2010, 01:29 PM Rendering: http://www.hopkins.co.uk/projects/_3,140/
The existing ground is situated in a tight urban site a couple of streets from the beachfront to the east. Our proposals create a series of twelve stands set on top of a continuous lower bowl of terracing. The sea breeze is then able to flow through the horizontal gap between the lower terrace and the upper stands and also through gaps between the stands and across the playing surface. Stands on the eastern edge of the site are reduced in scale, but follow a similar section, to allow greater air-flow from the east.
Daytime temperatures can reach 45°C in Chennai and so extensive translucent fabric roof structures provide shade over the stands. Sports and catering facilities such as badminton, squash and swimming pools for two social clubs at the ground, in addition to a cricket academy and car parking are also provided as part of the redevelopment.

I am not sure why there is so much of gap between the stands. Spoils the 'cagey' amibience I would imagine. Would have also increased the capacity by atleast 5 to 10 thousand. If you notice Chennai doesnt feature in the quarter or semi-finals or finals of the 2011 World Cup. Instead these games goes to Ahmedabad, Mohali & Mumbai.
Infact the games in Chennai are New Zealand v Kenya, England v SA, England v West Indies, & India v West Indies. So only one India game in Chennai. Could have been better if MAC was marketted properly as a leading venue.
Also the backside of the stadiums..( where you see tyhose vertical black lines, poles I suppose ? ) is it going to be open or is it glass clad ? From the render it is unclear.

I think that the most of the exterior perimeter of the galleries will be open as it really gets hot in Chennai and Glass cladding will add to the heat.
They are planning glass boxes with ACs for VIPs and Sponsorers.

We are used to it at Chennai. But the emphasis is slowly moving towards day night (100 overs) or night matches (40 overs).
Sathisht77 January 21st, 2010, 03:52 PM The old MAC stand that ran all around the stadium was quite intimidating for foreign players particulary the Aussies. So that psyched them out even before the game started. Add to that the tales of Dean Jones's vomiting etc, India had their noses ahead even before the game started.. We might miss the gladiatorial environment with these nice looking stands coming up.
Not sure how the open stands will affect swing bowling ? Some form of Free mantle doctor ??
scorpiogenius January 21st, 2010, 08:02 PM Its a disappointment that Chennai doesn't feature among the WC 2011 venues. It was one of my favourite cricket stadiums in India.

why does every ground in India have to goto Hopkins architects?
they have practically the same design for everything
this is pune international cricket centre

which looks exactly the same at Chepuk.
india is going to end up with a lot of similar looking grounds.

Fusi!!
We have been watching Cricket, Hockey and Football matches in Chennai for decades. Our enthu is so high that Sun is not an issue. Even the matches in Univercity Ground, Anna Univ, GuruNanak, IIT, Chemplast(Taramani), Viveka, Rajaratnam Stadium, Nehru statdium are being watched by huge numbers not minding the sun.
Probably you have not seen Marina in the afternoon - Lovers Paradise. They prefer that time period since the crowd will be relatively less.
When you are passionate, SUN is not at all an issue. I always wonder while seeing the IPL matches in England, huge crowd waiting and watching in biting cold. Even small kids!!!
The Spoilsport is generally RAIN.
Fusionist January 22nd, 2010, 09:54 PM ^^ I have been to several stadiums in Chennai too, so can easily say 'been there' ! lol. But my point is any new design for should be all weather stadium, considering the elements. Chepauks new design simply fails imho.
Anyways on a general note, I have a couple of issues at hand that warrents my attention and dont want to make mistakes. I do love it here but when arguments get heated I do sometimes feel festered. I am thinking of being less active here, but I hope the forums keeps up the momentum. :)
Jim856796 January 25th, 2010, 01:27 PM The new second tier of the Chennai Cricket Stadium is in pieces. Are they temporary stands or are they just made out of steel rather than concrete?
chennai11 February 2nd, 2010, 05:55 AM In Cricinfo and some Newspapers it said that a part of the renovations will be ready by the IPL 3, but looking at these pictures i dont think this will happen.
sampath1986 February 2nd, 2010, 06:25 AM Well, i doubt if the complete stadium would fully ready before the world cup. I'm saying this because The pune cricket stadium being built by the same architects has been under construction for more than two ears now...^^
still i hope it is ready on time....:)
Indian Sun February 2nd, 2010, 08:28 AM ^^ The pune stadium is being built from scratch - It requires preparation of the playing surface as well.
In case of Chepauk - it's just a case of building the stands. Of course IPL 3 looks like an impossible deadline , but lets keep our hopes up on the World Cup.

Exactly...any cricket lover will say Chepauk has the best pitch in India. I was sad they were going to build a new stadium far away from the city. It is great that our dear Chepauk continues to be the ground where we will watch cricket
ModernIndia March 9th, 2010, 03:24 PM Why this complex of feeling victimized?
:) Nice observation ff. I wonder about the same thing as well.
Chepauk has the best pitch in India.
Why the superlative (best pitch)? May be you trully believe it is the best and I can certainly understand that feeling. But it does not even have to be the best.
(IMHO EdenGardens is the best, just for the sheer size, atmosphere crowd and the pitch. Chennai comes second in my personal list of favorite grounds in India.) Either way, Chepauk is a great ground which has provided several years of entertainment to millions of fans and is the host for some of the magnificient matches. I am glad that they chose to restore it instead of abandoning it.
I read in one of the above posts/links that a critical design consideration is to bring back the swing, by allowing the sea breeze to enter the grounds through the stands. I hope the science works allowing the craftsmen (bowlers) to display their art. I want to see Zaheer Khan and Shreesanth in their present form playing in this ground. Hopefully we can witness Mr. Balaji too, especially his late swing like the legendary Kapildev himself.

Iam talking about the pitch not the stadia or atmosphere...take a look at every test match that happened in the last 20 years in Chepauk except the Ind vs SA 2008. They were all exciting matches with tight finish. It is because there is always something for the batters and bowlers (fast and spin)
BCCI official had said the following
Daljit says Chennai has the best Test wicket in India and credits the ground staff for their stupendous effort in preparing result-oriented pitches.
"I think Chennai is the best Test wicket in India. The wickets there are good and it always gives a result. If you see the weather in Chennai, it is hot, hotter and hottest and there is no other season there. So over five days, the pitch will degenerate and wear out. But if you see in the North, you have good wickets, but if you have Test match there in November, December or October it is very difficult for the wicket to wear out like in warmer places. I think the Chennai ground staff is very good in preparing wickets

i dont know how chennai got fooled... the whole stads is pulled down completely and newly everything is constructed except the pitch and outfield.. they both are alrweady one of the best in india and the new stand looks really really good... and so is MAC stadium in the centre of the city connected well by MRTS.. what more does a fan want??
ModernIndia March 9th, 2010, 06:34 PM Got your point Satisht77. Chennai is also one of the favorite hunting grounds for India.
I was trying to say that even if it is not the best (which it may very well be), we should extend its life as it has brought us some of the memorable entertainment in the game of cricket.
I cannot wait to see a test match after the stadium is fully constructed. I am expecting it to be awesome. I know I am being selfish when I say that the BCCI quota system is robbing us of the pleasure to an extent. (No! I am not feeling victimized. It is pure and simple selfishness!!! :))
venki04ss March 9th, 2010, 07:18 PM wooooooooooooooooooow 3 stand's construction ready to complete!! (may be 75% exterior finish .. but not fully constructed) before IPL 3.
this stand similar to LORD's Ground Mound stand's.
Where is pavilion in this stadium (after renovation)??
They fooled chennai again?? Good people will watch at new stand due to huge price ticket's 1000 and 1500rs. Fool people will watch at old and existing stand. look 200rs ticket price lower tier.!
MAC Stadium is one best test venue in India.
One thing why Stadium and state association ready to open early? i never seen any stadium full construction finish work like england and australia venue's. see this new 3 stands ready to install bucket seat without cover cement and paint on steps. Every stadium need perfect construction finish. there is alot of bribe and corrupt by state administration. This stadium need australia and english ground bucket seat's :ohno:
sampath1986 March 10th, 2010, 02:56 AM ^^ Well, i don't think that they would install permanent seating arrangements, with very little time left for the games to begin....:ohno:
I think they would be putting up temporary plastic chairs as usual.....
venki04ss March 10th, 2010, 11:18 AM I think they would be putting up temporary plastic chairs as usual.....
may be temporary plastic chairs like chinnaswamy stadium seating arragments during IPL and International matches.
I don't Understand Why TNCA decided to re-construct MAC Stadium?. Original plan build weatherproof cricket stadium (outskirt from chennai) was good idea?. Chennai is big city (metro's in india) so they should build 80000-90000 seaters world class cricket stadium. It isn't good MAC 45k capacity. Chennai is best crowds at stadium in india so far. There is no space further development present stadium. Is there any plan to build another cricket stadium outskirt in chennai after complete renovation existing stadium..!! If Our Country less population then 45k seaters capacity is Ok. Australia built MCG 100,000 Capacity and SCG 55,000 Capacity? so We are Re-building and renovation like wankhede and MAC Stadium - 45,000 Capacity??.
This stadium goes to Legacy.
Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad - big metro cities name .. They don't have 60-80k capacity stadium.. Large population. Poor planning BCCI and State Association official. :ohno:
Pune International Cricket Centre is one best cricket venue in India (when construction complete). They have very good space future development (it is possible expansion upto 95,000 capactiy). :)
die4chennai March 11th, 2010, 05:47 AM Any plans of retractable roof in the future?
It was promised in the new stadium which was eventually scrapped
venki04ss March 11th, 2010, 07:28 PM Any plans of retractable roof in the future?

It isn't possible retractable roof in the future. MAC is existing stadium. There is no space. Rectractable roof need more space and construction will be difficult. We never seen any cricket ground have rectractable roof..!! people think MELBOURNE (colenal stadium)?. This isn't regular cricket ground but multi-sport's use in Melbourne.

Same news in DKN
Good make over. btw, will the stands on the right hand side also be brought down and new stands built? I hope that is the plan.
Best pitch?? not sure if its chennai but Chennai can boast for having best crowd/spectators. They are so well informed and sportive. Even a small milestone reached by a player (in terms of career wickets / runs / catches etc) is known to the spectators (who read the newspaper before coming to the matches). And remember the India Pak Test match when Sachin valiantly fought but India lost by a slim margin? After applauding Sachin's for his effort, the crowd them very sportively applauded for Pak's victory. If you ask any Aussie player abt his fav venue in India, he'd say its Chepauk.
ranga March 12th, 2010, 10:50 AM ^^
But test cricket is not drawing huge crowds as was in the past. There was a time people used to sleep near the stadium inorder to ensure purchase of ticket and a vantage seat in the gallery. People outside were seen glued to their transistors listening to the commentary and many people in all walks of life were eager to know the latest scores and other particulars. Those thrilling days are gone. Now u find empty stands when test matches are conducted and even for ODIs there appears to be decling intetrest as time goes by.All this due to introduction of safety gadgets to the batsmen unfair rules to the disadvantage of the bowlers and the day and night matches where the due factor is playing havoc to the team bowling second.Unless conditions are equal cricket will be a dying game.
sridhar_n March 12th, 2010, 12:33 PM ^^The main reason is actually commercialistion of the game by our own BCCI. Test cricket still draws good crowd in England, Aus and SA. And even in India, Test Cricket has to be played only in 5-6 main venues - Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore and Mohali..I dono why they have matches in centres like Nagpur, Ahd etc where we only find empty stands. Recently, the Ind /SA match in Nagpur had virtually no spectators while the match at Kolkata attracted good crowd. Let them play the ODI and T20s in other venues.
Anniyan March 12th, 2010, 01:14 PM Test cricket still draws good crowd in England, Aus and SA.
Do they prepare flat pitches for test matches like in India?

Not Mohali boss.. Traditionally Green Park in Kanpur is a better test venue that draws large crowds.. And there weren't many ppl when Sachin broke Lara's record for most no runs in Test cricket, save few school children :ohno:
srinivasvny March 13th, 2010, 02:59 PM The hustle and bustle at Chepauk may seem chaotic, but they add to the excitement ahead of our first game of IPL-3 on Sunday against the Deccan Chargers.
Construction activity in the stands is in full swing with hardworking men totally dedicated to their time lines; the Television crew is rigging the lines along the periphery, connecting the cables to their control room and satellite van. They get distracted with the home runs from the power strikers. All the above activities are constructive in nature with the batsmen honing their long range shots to leave the bowlers helping them distraught.
The eastern part of the stands with gateways, gangways and a lovely canopy is sure to make the business of playing and viewing cricket a joyous one. The cauldron effect has sufficiently vanished to be replaced by the late afternoon sea breeze flowing into the field.

casanovaman March 15th, 2010, 10:49 AM Yesterday friends visited chepauk to view the IPL matches..they so surprised by the quality standards of the venue. What happened to another cricket stadium which planned near kanchipuram?
ceeznic pirate March 15th, 2010, 11:05 AM ^^
That project has been shelved. Read the earlier pages in the thread.
The new stands and the venue as a whole looked great except that they allowed a dog to participate in the match. The play interrupted 5-10 mins because of that. The third umpire decision display board also had some problems. During commentry Ravi shastri said that all the stands ll be rebuilt before the world cup.
@casanovaman
Ur's signature :lol::lol:
gvijayan March 15th, 2010, 11:52 AM ^^ A small correction. I was there in the stadium last night. There were two different dogs that entered the ground during last night's match. Both the dogs went out of the play area more than once, but were never trapped by the ground staff, and they freely came back into the field.
Had it been an ICC event, BCCI and TNCA would definitely receive bad remarks about this incident.
And the new stands look better.
Kathir March 15th, 2010, 12:31 PM The arrangements for entry and exit was 'the worst'.
ezhilan81 March 15th, 2010, 12:43 PM The new stands looked cool on TV with those roofs..Chaminda Vaas got a bit of swing and they immediately gave credit to TNCA for facilitating the wind to enter between the 2 new stands. I think stadium will look awesome once all the stands come up in the same fashion. Can somebody who visited these stands share your experice on the facilities available there? and was it cooler than before?
gvijayan March 15th, 2010, 06:52 PM ^^ Yesterday was my first visit to Chepauk, so I don't know if there is a difference. And as stated by Kathir, the arrangements for entry and exit were pathetic. But I think that is how it has been for all along. There was a mad rush thronged the entry gates and one needed to have lots of power to get in and get out. There were hardly any policement or security personnel to regulate the flow of people moving inside the stadium.
kannan infratech March 15th, 2010, 07:00 PM The entries to Chepauk except the Pavillion remind me of the Race Course Horse Start up Points. Or looks like a village cinema theatre entrance through the ticket counter.
My friends had a real bad experience yesterday. Having come all the way from Srilanka, they had a nightmarish experience.
The staff and Police treat the ticket buying public as Dirt and Police does not even know how to manage crowd without using rough tactics.
The quality of food is pathetic and you dont have much choice. You can not carry water bottles but you can buy them inside.
Even flags were confiscated by Police.
Not all the people can buy Pavilion tickets to enjoy smooth entry.
vivekajithfan March 15th, 2010, 07:15 PM Yetseraday was my 8th consecutive IPL visit to chepauk....the new stands were awesome n spacious wid more no more of seats....but d entry was really pathetic..Good pitch....outfield turned out to be a very quick one......widin 2011 all d stands will be renovated....

Kannan, I was about to say that the entry points were like village cinema theatre counters.
And we took some of the water bottles inside, probably we didn't get noticed by the security cleanly. They allowed the flags inside, but they considcated the sticks in the flag. But again, I could see few people managed to take flags with sticks inside the stadium.
On a different note, it was nice to see all the major hitters giving some treats in a single game.. Gilly, Gibbs, Symonds, Rohit, MS, Raina, and Albie....
srinivasvny March 16th, 2010, 03:38 AM how are the entry/exit to the new stands??? ad how are the other facilities like stalls, toilets in the new stands?

roninja1999 March 31st, 2010, 02:56 PM Nice to see the ground taking shape offering a great contrast to the older parts of the ground still standing. It will make a great Test venue (real cricket) alongside the IPL circus which is great fun mind you.

Nice to see that they are taking care of the players too, rather than building a giant stadium to make more money.
madrasi7777 April 1st, 2010, 08:27 AM Will this stadium be completed for the world cup. Indian Sun April 4th, 2010, 07:25 PM ^^ I think seats will be added. I'm not sure about the feasibility of grass embankments in India, given the crowd.
win-win, the new structures do not form the pavilion.

This portion will be taken up for renovation after IPL. But if its kept seat-free with artifical grass, it would be wonderful - but not sure if the weather in Chennai would be condusive for that and this will also reduce the capacity of the stadium and I don't think our money minded associations would be for it.
sampath1986 April 5th, 2010, 06:08 AM ^^Well, the front portion of the new stands are no more empty..... Now temporary seating arrangements are in place over there.......
That particular picture should have been taken during the 1st or 2nd IPL match in Chennai, while the B and c stand where still under construction and had some work to do. But now it has been completed and temporary seating arrangements are in place as of now, in the lower tear...
But in the Upper tear of all three new stands, permanent seating is in place and the seats are in yellow....:)

As per TNCC, this will be ready well before the World Cup next year and there are 4 ODIs scheduled to be played.
One obvious advantage of the new stadium design is that there are gaps between stands permitting air to flow in and cool off the players and the people especially with the weather being hot and humid most of the time. The current stands are fully jam-packed with no chance of air flowing in and everyone suffocates during a match. It is like a big cow shed. :bash::bash::bash:
By the way, in great stadiums like the Yankee Stadium in NY, even small things like the seat design and arrangement are taken into account to circulate air beautifully around the stadium. They have also assessed how the ball will fly through and how its flight-path will be affected by the wind-flow.:cheers: - in India, we can't expect these kinda things atleast for some time in the future. :ohno:

Yellow!!!!!!!:ohno:
I wish they had put mixes of red and white colored seats, or blue and white colored ones...yellow for me seems very odd. AHD stadium also has yellow seats and they look awfull.
Personally, I don't like the yellow color CSK jersy. I hope the team owner decides to change the color to something else by next IPL.

Well, i think yellow is quite good..... It reflects the city of Chennai and its hot weather.....
And when it comes to team jersey i would like it to be better in terms of design, but the color should remain yellow..... Well it's my personal opinion.:)

Mad 4 Madras April 12th, 2010, 11:33 AM ^^ I strongly agree for hosting such event. See the enormous cash flow this generates and thus can't be paralyzed coz of TNEB's inefficiency.
venkatm April 12th, 2010, 01:08 PM TNEB, MTC, PWD, CMDA, Corporation, CWSSB etc. are all stuck in the 70's. I have lost count of the number of times we suffer outage in Indiranagar due to "cable fault". Power was more reliable and there was less scope for corruption when we had overhead cables in Chennai.

sridhar_n April 19th, 2010, 12:21 PM ^^ is the first pic the pavilion ? if so, they should have better seating facility; not plastic chairs. I hope they are temporary.
Great innings by Dhoni, isn't it? ( I was actually cursing him until the 19th over..he was sort of struggling to time the ball).. Will our guys be third time lucky and bring home the cup?
ChennaiIndian April 19th, 2010, 04:59 PM ^^ They weren't lucky in the last two occasions and didn't bring home the cup. So where is the question of being 'thrid time' lucky?
venki04ss April 19th, 2010, 05:40 PM i think MAC looks better given the scale and size...and will more when fully done!!!!!!!!!!![/QUOTE]
U tell me each stand !! .. look is it fully shade cover see above picture (MAC) in day time. 25% Sun Light display in 2nd tiers. Rose Bowl Stadium installed 100% shade cover in 2nd tier's. Who is designed this roof at MAC.? (Local or Overseas import).
If we talk about each stand. It is same look remaining 12 stand's..
We cannot sit 12th row in 2nd tier's (newly renovated stand) .. when matches played in day time. Chennai weather is horrible during summer season...

'Third-time lucky' doesn't mean they're going to be lucky again, it means that they'll be lucky the third time.
madrasi7777 April 22nd, 2010, 11:28 AM Well, i think yellow is quite good..... It reflects the city of Chennai and its hot weather.....
And when it comes to team jersey i would like it to be better in terms of design, but the color should remain yellow..... Well it's my personal opinion.:)
Earlier I did not like the colour but now I think it is a good colour. CSK colours stands out .May be it can be sobered down but it should remain Yellow. With regards to the seat colour I think yellow is wonderful. The combination of Yellow, Blue and White will be great.
Indian Sun April 22nd, 2010, 12:30 PM ^^ We need a different shade of yellow, like the canary yellow of the Aussies, not this flourescent yellow. It hurts.
R2IChennai April 22nd, 2010, 11:20 PM YAY super kings won, This is the first match I watched (in US )
Awesome game. Why CSK cheerleaders are dressed like athletes? We need more skinshow to entertain the audience..

Indian Sun June 2nd, 2010, 07:17 AM According to the renders, the rest of the stands (yet to be built) are taller than the existing new stands. I hope that is maintained, since the above layout does not show a height distinction.
kodai June 3rd, 2010, 04:17 PM Why can't they just build a permanent roof covering all the seats instead of having a canvas roof with all the ropes and protruding poles. with BCCI being richest off all the boards in the whole world, why can't they allot money to chennai, I really don't know why chennai is not given importance while conducting important matches like semi finals or finals is this due to space limitation or north superiority in the BCCI, they always choose either bombay or bangalore, with krish srikanth being chairmen of selectors he should do a lot bringing important matches to this stadium

I guess that will remain during the world cup considering the time it may take to construct it. They might rebuild it after the WC. It better old than be demolished and left unbuilt.
Indian Sun August 19th, 2010, 07:02 AM That's the pavilion. It doesn't matter if it stays for the WC. It was revamped in 2006 and has modern facilities.

Thats an iconic stand. The thatched roof structure kind of became a symbol of chepauk, a beautiful backdrop when the TV cameras focus the batsmen. So i doubt if they will modify that. Lets see!
srinivasvny August 19th, 2010, 12:23 PM i posted the seating for the WC(costs stand wise) and in that the old pavillion would be used. hence that wont be demolished till the WC. posted that a few pages back.

That is one pathetic Stand, with the giant pillars obstructing the view and insufficient public amenities.
Only the VIP necessities and the Change rooms were refurbished with plastic seats in that Stand for 2006 and does not deserve to be a part of the new Chepauk.
This is going to be an eyesore for an otherwise pretty Stadium.

Every Cricket Stadium never complete full construction from Render and Design in India. Y'day Hyderabad, Today Chennai n what next.? Wait n watch Wankhede and Eden Garden's etc.
It is stupid making money first (international matches Ticket's) rather than perfect construction finish.
Anyway WE ARE THIRD WORLD. OUR COUNTRY SPORT AND CRICKET INFRASTRUCTURE ALWAYS LOOK PATHETIC. We never compare australia, England, South Africa cricket stadium's.
:ohno:
Indian Sun August 20th, 2010, 06:37 AM All right, firstly, we don't know what's going to happen to the pavilion. It's too early to say.
And, the work seems to be up to date. I'm pretty confident of this stadium being fully ready by January 2011.
I hope the height of the stands to be built is more than the already built ones. That's what the renders promised.

Yeah. But I would like to know, what exactly is the advantage of a bleacher ? As in, how does the foldability help ?
r3dg33k August 20th, 2010, 01:46 PM Yeah. But I would like to know, what exactly is the advantage of a bleacher ? As in, how does the foldability help ?
By folding you will have space to stand while watching the match else our fans will stand on the seats which will cause damage to the seats.
srinivasvny August 20th, 2010, 03:07 PM for ur info the top tier in the new stand had folding type of chair.. thats what i heard..

naveen vinu September 8th, 2010, 09:07 PM guys is the pavilion gonna be demolished or they gonna maintain the same pavilion......:nuts:
antriksh_sfo September 9th, 2010, 06:26 AM Yeah. But I would like to know, what exactly is the advantage of a bleacher ? As in, how does the foldability help ?
It reduces the width of each row in the stand.
Standard no bleacher row can be 85cms to 100cms.
But with bleachers used, each row width can be as low as 75cms.
1. So with even large number of rows, the distance from field of play is considerably reduced.
2. With more rows added, bigger capacity can be achieved within the same available space. Almost 10% Capacity increase.
3. The Construction cost for the Stands is reduced accordingly.
4. The foundation construction cost for the stands also get reduced (this normally plays massive role in any civil construction price/resource wise). Almost 10 to 15% cost reduction.
Indian Sun September 9th, 2010, 06:40 AM ^^ Thanks for the info, antriksh.

Indian Sun October 17th, 2010, 11:12 AM Passed through the stadium today. Majority of the works seem complete in the D,D Special, E,F ,G and H stands. The structure is complete, the roof is yet to be installed, and seats are pending. Peripheral works such as gates and pathways are underway. It should be ready before Dec 10, the Ind-NZ match.

Indian Sun December 10th, 2010, 09:22 AM ^^ In comparison to world cricket stadia, Chepauk is supposed to be of average size, neither too large, nor too small. I think it's rougly 70m on all sides. To compare with, the shortest boundary at Lord's is 64m.

coolmukund December 10th, 2010, 07:28 PM ^^
I have never been to this stadium. So i have a doubt. Does this pavilion come in the beach side or city side????
Indian Sun December 10th, 2010, 07:50 PM ^^ The pavilion is at a 45 degree angle to the beach side, and faces the Chepauk MRTS Station, across Victoria Hostel Road. The shorter new stands are on the beach side, and their reduced height is to facilitate the sea breeze to a greater extent. The stands opposite to the pavilion are accessed by Walajah Road, and the stands opposite to the Beach Side by Bells Road.
CGMaurya December 10th, 2010, 10:02 PM The breeze coming at the ground level from beach road is responsible for swing rather than over the roof.
The non avialability of space on the Beach Road end for an extended 10 row stand is the main reason.
Indian Sun December 11th, 2010, 06:27 AM ^^
Chepauk Cricket Stadium
Chennai, India 2011
Chennai's Chidambaram Stadium at Chepauk is famous in world cricket and has a long history of exciting matches. However, since the construction of the stadium in the early seventies, the characteristic swing of the ball created by the incoming sea-breeze which led to so much excitement after lunch has dwindled away.
Hopkins Architects have been asked by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association to find a way to increase capacity, provide additional corporate box and air-conditioned accommodation, maintain roof shading and get the swing back. It is also important that the principles of Vaasthu, an Indian form of feng shui, be adhered to in the design.
Stands on the eastern edge of the site are reduced in scale, but follow a similar section, to allow greater air-flow from the east.
from the Hopkins Architects Site.

ChennaiIndian December 11th, 2010, 08:34 PM http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Chennai/article944280.ece
Sport is a great leveller. When the Indian ODI captain Gautam Gambhir stepped out of the pavilion towards the 22-yard pitch on Friday, many in the crowd were chanting his name feverishly. Within next three minutes, they would turn against him.
As he walked back after scoring a nought, a fan screamed “Look at him. After scoring a ‘duck', he doesn't even have the courage to look at us”.
The spectator then went on to mutter statistics on Gambhir's batting average. That is Chennai's knowledgeable cricket fandom for you and the setting was the fifth ODI between New Zealand and India at the M.A. Chidambaram stadium, Chepauk.
It was the first match at the stadium after the recent renovation, during which the distance between the stands was increased to facilitate the flow of more sea breeze into the arena.

wlbkng December 14th, 2010, 11:52 AM Eventhough the stadium is renovated, in the world cup only one Indian match is going to be played(India vs. West indies) in Chennai. Other 3 matches will be played by other countries. I wish they kept one semi final in chennai instead of the one at mohali. The ground would be a feast to watch if they had a quarter final or semi final or final in the ground.

krishnaswamy December 14th, 2010, 08:22 PM what about the basic facilities for Fans?
I have seen Ind-WI match(2007 Jan?).. There is no facilities for Fan.. Rest rooms were worst... Canteen food and food courts are expensive and not good too(worser than platform shops)... that time they have put old wooden chair(D-stand?) for 1000 rs

Now they've improved all facilities.....u cant enter inside using fake tickets as they've installed bar code reader in the entrance......Toilets are pretty good....And this time no nets so that gives a clean view......and food stuffs r much better but they always remain expensive......overall a worldclass stadium .........
