It is more or less well known that Singapore has got three 280m/919ft scrapers. But which is your favourite of these three? Some of you may have voted 10 points for all three, so here is your chance to pick the best out of these beauties.

OUB Centre

When it was completed in 1986, it was the tallest in all of Asia and the 11th tallest in the world. Its graceful profile dominated the Singapore skyline for a good 6 years, and has a far stonger impact on the imaginations of Singaporeans then any other building. While many would have considered it simple by today's standards, its silvery finish allows it to take on a different colour at different times of the day, even without glittering glass. Sleek, sharp and smooth, it celebrates the beauty of simplicity.

UOB Plaza One

Rival Bank UOB decided to match OUB Bank's creation by another 280-metre scraper, but with 6 more floors. This occured in 1992, and like the OUB, was also designed by Kenzo Tange. The building was matched with plenty of media blitz and fanfair, and its play of geometric forms received critical acclaim. At nightfall, the UOB Plaza towers are lit up with blazing lights during special occasions, and in the year 2000, fireworks streaked right off its top for Singapore's National Day Parade, the first and only time it ever occured here. The Singapore skyline was permanantly altered.

Republic Plaza

Three years later, another 280-er quietly creeped up the skyline. Compared to the previous two, this building received the least fanfare, so much so that some locals do not even realise it is of the same height as the tallest here. However, it reflected the changing tastes of highrise architecture with its extensive use of glass along with a mix of granite. The building torso changes from an octagen to a square towards the top, as well as changing orientation by 45 degrees. It is also the only 280-er to take advantage of colour, allowing it to stand out from the otherwise greyish skyline.

I pick OUB Centre.

Yes..although I previously said I like UOB best, nostalgia changed my mind.

The OUB was new in 1987 and I recall dragging my grandma and her maid all the way just to stare up at it. Its really awesome if you look up especially at the sharp angle of the triangle and it is uninterrupted from pavement to the top.
In fact the Singapore skyline became quite highly photographed and famous once this was completed.

http://www.ura.gov.sg/skyline/skyline07-02/images/evolvingskyine4.gif

I remember UOB being very kiasu..even before the UOB was completed, TV adverts already showed the UOB Plaza and I was thinking..that doesnt exist! I also imagined it was taller than the OUB since it was nearer the river.

Up until then most Singapore skyline shots were shot from the river.
http://www.ura.gov.sg/skyline/skyline07-02/images/evolvingskyline5.gif

Republic Plaza I like least. It looks nice and elegant at night, but too demure. Also not many people noticed it. But after its completion, more skyline shots are taken out from sea.

Next time you fly into SIngapore, get a window seat on the left (or right if you depart) If the plane uses the sea route..you get a clear view of these 3, plus all the other buildings like Capital, Temasek Tower, Westin STamford, Millenia and if the sun is shining the durians glisten. ITS JUST SO AMAZING!!!

I would have prefered not to say anything so as not to sway opinions....but then...

I have to say its the OUB. It is more then a scraper to me. Its the pioneer..the most daring..yet the most humble of the lot. I liked the UOB design, but its like a big bad boy trying to bully the graceful OUB. And the Republic is like a lost sheep who cant really get along with the rest. Yes, to me....these scrapers have souls, and I find myself judging by that criteria...:D

I'd say Republic Plaza is the best looking, although UOB Plaza One comes very close.

Overseas Union Bank Centre

A timeless masterpiece of simplicity and pure beauty, changing it's profile from virtually every angle, the OUB Centre is a truly beautiful piece of architecture.

It dominates without ever screaming to get attention, always stepping back and giving a place to it's two other counterparts, but with graceful moves and it dances in the light, regaining it's deserved attention at the ideal time.

Ahh, humble yet powerful

The Queen and her loyal subjects, all built before UOB was even planned out.

Btw, that photo was taken by me.:D

Do you know that OUB actually has huge windows and is a very bright building inside?

Ahh, always putting a brave and formiddible front, but yet so fragile and light...

1 - OUB, as it is the first Singapore skyscraper I knew about. It's also kind of similar to another favourite BOC in Hong Kong.

2 - UOB

..and at a distant third place - Republic Plaza

I would say that this is one of the most interesting polls around. Do you guys know that the UOB is the one that is actually doing very well in the ROT, must higher then the other two?

Also, I remember doing this threat in the world forums too. Surprisingly, Republic plaza was the one that got the most votes, and OUB the least!! :D

I think Republic Plza looks better in pics and renderings.. I remember judging it from its rendering before contruction and I readily concluded it would end up being the best looking of the 3 when completed. The 'real' thing however did not live up to expectation :D

1. UOB

3. Republic

UOB Plaza One for sure love the angles and the smaller one as set just make it look great. Stage set back as well this one my Top

But OUB Center has shape angles that slice the sky. One of a kind tower

Republic Plaza by a big margin. It's the nicest to work in as well. If you work in UOB, on a high floor, you have to change lifts at about level 34 - wierd!

I think you local guys are too misty-eyed about UOB too, that's why the vote on the world forum was different....

I voted for UOB. ;)

December 26th, 2003, 07:00 AM
UOB is my first choice. When it is lit, it looks very pretty and able to be the shining beacon that overshadows OUB. Republic Plaza comes a close second with its modern look.

Incidentally, why are Singapore's tallest buildings all tipped the scales at 280m? Is there a height limit on Singapore buildings or is there a weight limit? Can anyone enlighten me on this?

Cliff
December 26th, 2003, 10:45 AM
Weight limit?, I've never herd of that being related to height.:D

Yes, Singapore buildings do have a 280m height limit set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore(I think).

OUB Centre was the first building in Singapore to reach that height.:)

paw
December 27th, 2003, 04:40 AM
I just realised, though not surprising since the Top 3 are all 280m high, on the other thread. Weight limit because the buildings are on the river banks, so weight...;)

huaiwei
December 27th, 2003, 08:16 AM
But then only UOB is just beisde the river front, isnt it? ;)

Cliff

According to 100 of the World's Tallest Buildings, Republic Plaza has the most office space compared to the other two.

Has anyone realized that our 3 tallest are actually very skinny compared to skyscrapers of similar height in other cities? I think this might be a result of the old city grids.

No wonder 1 Marina Blvd looks so fat..its actually 'American' size:cheers:

The diagram of Republic Plaza is too fat, whilt the one of OUB is showing the wider side of the building. Jut compare UOB and Citigroup.

I think the skyscrapers in Shenton Way are limited by existing street grids, but slim makes them look taller:cool:

Nope. Because it stands alone it enjoys all the attention to itself and seems taller than it really is.

If placed in the financial district its attention will be divided by taller structures. Even the OCBC isnt that domineering in the skyline anymore.

Which one of Singapore's three 280m skyscrapers are the best!?

U.O.B Plaza One
66 floors
Completed in 1992
Designed by Kenzo Tange

Rises to the maximum allowed height in Singapore

One of the highest towers in the Asian region. The new headquarters of The United Overseas Bank, U.O.B., one of the most prestigious financial groups of South-East Asia, is situated in the Central Business District of Singapore. It is a futuristic project with two office towers of 66 and 38 floors and a podium with banking hall designed by Prof. Kenzo Tange of Japan, one of the most internationally renowned modern architects, in joint venture with Architects 61 of Singapore. The tower, with its 280 meters, is amongst the highest in the Asian region and creates a new image to the vibrant and diversified Singapore skyline. Permasteelisa has executed this work by employing 46,000 m2 of 30 mm thick natural granite cladding; 23,000 m2 of special 26 mm thick double glazing; 700 tons of extruded aluminum sections custom designed to create a pressure equalized structural framework. The external curtain wall system of the U.O.B. represents a significant and innovative contribution to the evolution of the building facade for the use of advanced technology.

Rebublic Plaza
66 floors
Completed in 1995
Designed by Kisho Kurokawa Architects & Associates

The high-rise building is to be built adjacent to the Raffles Place in the central business district of Singapore.

It will consist of office space in the tower and car parks in the podium. The first basement floor, composed of a variety of shops and restaurants, is accessible by the escalator from the covered walkway on the street level and is linked to the subway station on the basement level of the Raffles Place adjacent to the site.

The height of the tower is 280 meters, which is the highest possible height under the air-traffic control restriction of Singapore.

In order to maintain a fine, ocean view from the upper floors of the office tower, the axis of the tower is turned by 45 degrees from the axis of the ground floor level.

The exterior finish is the combination of the granite with strip windows and the curtain wall made of tinted glass. The curtain wall surrounding the four sides is gradually inclined to smoothly shift the octagonal configuration of the typical floor.

The top of the tower, where the executive club for the owner including guest rooms, and other facilities is located, will be lit up during the night to be a landmark of Singapore.

OUB Center
63 floors
Completed in 1986
Designed by Kenzo Tange

The Overseas Union Bank is located in Singapore's financial centre. The plinth of the tower establishes a relationship with Raffles Place, whose subterranean level contains the central underground connection. Raffles Place, which is to be developed as a green area, and the OUB Centre constitute the core of the Singapore development zone. Situated below the tower is the prestigious bank lobby, whose 36m high entrance area creates a vista taking in the OUB, Raffles Place and Singapore River.
The building is subdivided into two clearly distinguished volumes: a lower and higher tower standing back-to-back. Each tower stands on a triangular plan. A particularly impressive feature is the entrance with its almost 40m high atrium providing an exciting view of the surrounding area.

An article that briefly mentions about Kenzo Tange and the firm's work in Singapore, including the OUB and UOB.

Essentially Tange

13 August 2004

Paul Tange wants to be different yet true to his visionary father's architectural principles. GEOFFREY EU finds out how he strikes a balance

WHEN your father happens to be one of the most accomplished architects on the planet, following in his professional footsteps can naturally be both a blessing and a curse. Just ask Paul Noritaka Tange, only son of Kenzo Tange, the iconic Japanese architect who is credited with designing some of the most beautiful urban spaces and breathtaking modern buildings of the last half-century - and also some of the skyscrapers that define the Singapore skyline.

The younger Tange, 46, joined his father's architectural practice - Kenzo Tange Associates - 20 years ago, fresh from Harvard University and eager to benefit from the experience of working with a man hailed as a master builder in post-war Japan and who was a mentor to some of Japan's most famous architects, including Fumihiko Maki, Arata Isozaki and Kisho Kurokawa.

Kenzo Tange retired two years ago at 88, and his company was absorbed into Paul's own firm, Tange Associates, which had been working in tandem with the parent company for over a decade. While his father, who won architecture's coveted Pritzker prize at age 74, remains active in an advisory capacity, Paul Tange has taken over the company reins. With ongoing projects and offices in Asia, Europe and North America - including Shanghai, Taipei, Singapore and Milan - he has the unenviable task of being true to his visionary father's architectural principles while also wanting to make his own mark as an architect.

'When my father decided to retire, he thought his name would be a burden to me,' says Tange, who was in Singapore recently. 'Kenzo Tange had become a brand name, so we decided to make a distinction between the two.' There is no question, of course, that many prospective clients still seek out the elder Tange but the fact remains that Paul has been intimately involved in most of his projects over the past two decades, responsible for research and pre-planning as well as principal design work on some of the more recent works. 'Before, it was more of a 'master-student' relationship and now it has become much more of a joint effort,' says Tange.

'I don't want to become my father,' he adds. 'I'm a different person, and times have changed. Collaborative work is important and the second generation has a different task. Not everything is handed over on a silver platter.'

'I try to keep to the traditions my father started, so I am not doing anything drastically different - I just expand the horizon a little.'

One example of father and son doing complementary work can be found at the Hiroshima Peace Centre, a major project that symbolises the city's reconstruction from the devastation of an atomic bomb. It was built by the elder Tange in 1950 after his firm won a design competition.

In 2002, Paul Tange designed a modern memorial hall that recognises the loss of life and that occupies one section of the vast park. 'We are proud to say we have kept to very good design standards,' he says.

'My philosophy originates from what my father taught, especially when it comes to large-scale projects,' says Tange of his father's lasting impact on the post-war reconstruction of Japan and his work on the urban planning of major cities around the world. 'In the last 10 years, I began to believe that there are no more borders in architecture,' he says. 'After all, it's about creating spaces for people - whether it's public or residential.

'For example, if you can create an office space that is as comfortable as your home, you should be more productive. Or, why must a library look the way it does? Some people like to read on sofas, others like to read outdoors - we can create libraries to reflect that.'

According to Tange, architecture is changing from mass production to more individually-oriented environments. 'Buildings have to be more adaptable - what we have to do is create more comfortable spaces for the individual to be more creative in. I'm now thinking of buildings with a lot of green space - not in the traditional sense, but pockets of greenery so that even if you're in a 100-storey building you can still be close to the green.'

Close to nature

He adds: 'Urban life is great but somewhere along the line, people have lost touch with nature - so why not have a space where you can plant a tomato, for instance? To create humane communication spaces, our life becomes richer. It is our responsibility as architects to try little things like this.'

While the Tange name has typically been associated with skyscrapers, he says the attention to human scale has not often been highlighted. He cites two prominent Tange projects in Singapore - the OUB Centre and neighbouring UOB Plaza - as good examples of tall buildings that focus on the human element by allowing for gathering spaces at ground level. 'We are proud of what we have done at ground level, opening up a view corridor from Raffles Place to Boat Quay.'

The Tanges have an unprecedented association with Singapore, dating back over 30 years to the time when Kenzo met then-prime minister Lee Kuan Yew at an awards ceremony in Hong Kong and was subsequently invited here to provide some insight into the redevelopment of the city.

The result was a spate of Tange-designed buildings in the 1980s and 90s - OUB Centre, UOB Plaza, Nanyang Technological University and the Indoor Stadium among them.

Over the past few years, Paul has worked on projects such as UE Square, the PSA Building and student residences at Chinese High School. Works-in-progress include the new Cathay Building complex and The Linear condominium in Upper Bukit Timah. In December last year, he also completed his first private residence here, for The Linear's developer Albert Teo.

Tange says architecture in Singapore is a fine balance. 'In 30-plus years, Singapore became a modern city. Along the way, maybe we neglected the historical element, but we Japanese have done that too. If architecture can stop people and make them say what they think, then it is somewhat successful. It's good that people comment one way or another.'

These days, Tange is also keen on designing hospitals and healthcare-related buildings, such as retirement homes. 'I'm very interested in this field because after all, my father is 90 years old! In the case of hospitals, patients should be made to feel comfortable - it will help them get better.'

On his choice of profession, Tange says it felt like the natural thing to do. 'Nobody forced me to do anything. Since I was a little boy, I was surrounded by architecture, so that's what I thought I would do. I did try economics for a year in college but I hated it - then I realised that architecture was what I wanted to do.'

No regrets

He adds: 'It was a hot summer day in Bologna and we were having really lousy pasta when I told my father that I wanted to become an architect. There was dead silence for about 30 seconds. He was happy in a way but he also knew how difficult it was to be a good architect. In the end, he said, 'You live only once, you might as well do what you want to do'. Luckily, I haven't regretted it yet.'

One of the most important things he learned from his father, Tange says, was the art of concentration. 'I used to observe that he spent a very long time deep in thought, putting the pieces of the puzzle together until something triggered an idea. We can't design buildings overnight - we're always thinking. He also taught me that beauty in a building is a very important function. Just being functional is not enough - we are actually artists with social responsibility.'

Tange says he believes strongly in the democratic ideal when working on a project. 'Our job is to turn your vision into reality,' he says. 'The best compliment I can possibly think of is for the client to say that everybody participated jointly in the building. There are lots of good architects but not everybody is a good communicator. If you live in society, you need to be a good communicator. Architects can be selfish, but that's not what I want. The idea is in you (the client) - let us cultivate that.'

Heirloom - further correction - Millenia Tower is spelt with a single "n". I know, the quirkiness of it all - not sure whether it got anything to do with the lawsuit with City Development over Millennium & Copthorne. Confusing and meaningless, isn't it -- Centennial Tower is spelt with two "n"s, but Millenia Tower is spelt with one "n" and both are done by the same developer (Pontiac Land).

Yup, the hotel near ground zero in NYC was part of the Millennium & Copthorne - the chain owned by Kwek Leng Beng. Not sure whether it is still standing or torn down.

Seriously the best night shot of it capturing the elegance of its top - the whole point of this building IMO. :okay:

I've finished the Temasek Tower, and I'm about 2/3rds through Swissotel. I plan on putting people on the balconies to make it look more realistic. :) How many people do you usually see on the balconies at Swissotel during the day? Is it alot?

I had troubles working out the width of Swissotel, I emailed the architects for info and they didn't respond. :( I did find a nice long distance shot from the front which helped me.

I've been busy with uni and other pursuits so the Singapore diagram has currently stopped with Swissotel 80 percent completed. The next building I plan to draw, the Millenia Tower, will be the most difficult because I don't know how wide the building is, and all photos I've seen of the building are from various acute angles so I can't calculate how wide the building is relative to the height. Does anyone have any photos of the tower from a distance, which shows the top and bottom of the building, but is head on rather than angled?

RafflesCity
October 5th, 2004, 01:44 PM
The book 'Tall Buildings of Asia & Australia' has such a photo I believe.

What I am sure of is Millenia Tower is wider than all the big 3.

DamienK
October 5th, 2004, 11:23 PM
Thanks for reminding me, I have the book, but that photo doesn't show the base. I can probably extrapolate knowing the number of floors and get a pretty good estimate of the base. When I finish Swissotel I'll post the next three tallest in Singapore after the big three. (Capital Tower you've already seen, but nevermind)

DamienK
October 20th, 2004, 11:43 AM
I finished Swissotel yesterday. Here's Singapore's next three. Yes, I know that Temasek is a bit too brown, but that's the shade it looked in the photos that I took.
Enjoy!

will these pics be available on SSP in the usual smaller size?

DamienK
October 20th, 2004, 12:50 PM
This weekend I might try to submit them - my recent diagrams usually don't get in the primaries because I don't use flashy glass effects, and also they don't resize very well. Ones which are drawn closer to 1 to 1 scale, using photoshop, look better at the SSP size. I draw at 3 to 1 to get the details in.

He he, when I visited Singapore, I remember walking across the little bridge to the city, and the first thing I did was run across a block so that my first proper look at the OUB was the classic "knife edge" view shown in Judith Dupre's "Skyscrapers."

Breathtaking.

That was the book, and view of OUB that made me like the building soooo much!!!!!(Why is why everytime I post a picture thread, there will bound to be a pic of OUB in that angle.:D)

Btw, the best view is on the piece of land infront of Maybank Tower where the two roads meet, it is directly central and you won't risk you life taking the pic too. But I think the picture in the book was taken much closer, where the road should be.

That indeed seems to be the classic angle of OUB, but the angle that mesmerized me since I was young is the angle seen from the Padang, when the building looks like a 2-dimensional piece of cardboard propped up against the sky, so unreal, so slim and elongated........

When UOB came along it kinda spoiled the total dominance of OUB

shao_ye
August 13th, 2005, 07:47 PM
i think each one has its own uniqueness... UOB is striking cause of the different 'edges' of the building, OUB is striking because of its history and its 'simple-ness', republic is striking mainly caused of the colours used for its facade and its the only tallest building in sg that is lighted up every night without fail...

RafflesCity

I think I might prefer OUB slightly more because its been around the longest, but its facade is beginning to look 'patchy'
