simcard December 23rd, 2009, 12:40 PM isnt Hong Kong airport one of the worst? I have seen pictures and videos of landing in HK and i could tell the pilots need to be super alert to land there
Kubajzo December 23rd, 2009, 12:53 PM isnt Hong Kong airport one of the worst? I have seen pictures and videos of landing in HK and i could tell the pilots need to be super alert to land there
I think that was true for the old airport which is already closed.
GlasgowMan December 23rd, 2009, 01:11 PM I would say dangerous is the wrong choice of word. Interesting yes but what is dangereous about airports such as Gibraltar, Madeira, Barra or Princess Juliana?
ps Barra Airport is not an International Airport. Barra Airport is in Scotland and it only has two flights each day, both to Glasgow International.
simcard December 23rd, 2009, 01:12 PM I think that was true for the old airport which is already closed.
ooh right, thanks for this info, i did not know HK now got a new airport

I have landed there 3 times, very close to the water. However they have had very few accidents.
ruifo December 23rd, 2009, 06:01 PM I don't agree with this list! ;)
What about:
- Rio de Janeiro - Santos Dumont, Brazil?
- Paro, Butan?
- Merida, Venezuela?
- La Paz, Bolivia?
- London City, UK?
- Quito, Ecuador?
- Tegucigalpa, Honduras?
- Cuzco, Peru?
- Kai Tak, Hong Kong?
And many many others? ;)
Otsuka December 23rd, 2009, 06:17 PM whats dangerous about barra?, id say the most dangerous is heathrow, the slightest bit of fog and all the flights are canceled, and they only have 2 runways, yeah dangerous.
Whisper09 December 24th, 2009, 01:39 AM I also prefer Tegucigalpa, Honduras as you see in this video:
v_z5HtME9n8
chevy_boy December 24th, 2009, 11:24 AM Paro in Bhutan must be one of the most dangerous airports in the world as only around 7 pilots are licensed to fly there...
Also Baguio Airport in the Philippines...
muc December 24th, 2009, 11:48 AM Nice looks quite ideal on that photo. No obstacles at all in approach and takeoff. Why should it be dangerous?

hkskyline December 29th, 2009, 12:19 PM Any airport with cross-runways are inherently more dangerous. The most notorious busy example I have is New York La Guardia.

daloso January 1st, 2010, 01:48 AM How do you catalogue "dangerous" an airpot,by the runway, the surroundings or what?Because Toncontin yes it has some risk in landing and in T/O,bit that picture of the accident was mostly a HUMAN error, have you ever heard that the human is the 99% of the causes of fatal accidents? How come it doesnt "appear" on your list Congonhas,or perhaps La Aurora in Guatemala City, maybe you forgot Tenerife Los Rodeos?
Toncontin despite his difficulties has been used for major international american carriers such as American(with the 757),Continental,Copa,Taca and Delta(recently),the FAA has certified it and allow to the North american airlines to fly?Why well ask them, otherwise we will have an isolated city!

^^accidents may happen in any airport, and that does not make them "dangerous"!
eomer January 1st, 2010, 02:16 PM Nice looks quite ideal on that photo. No obstacles at all in approach and takeoff. Why should it be dangerous?
Nice's airport looks not dangerous but there are mountains in runway axis.
An other reason: due to rich people who live here, aircrafts are not allowed to fly over cape of Antibes any longer and must make 2 curves before landing.
That's absolutly crazy but the autorities accepted that stupid rules.
I'm surprized to see that Bogota (4 000 m !!!) is not on the list.
nomarandlee January 2nd, 2010, 01:30 PM I would think that Telluride Regional Airport (a major ski resort in SW Colorado, U.S.) would get some love......
...... At an elevation of 9,078 feet (2767 m) above sea level[2], it is the highest commercial airport in North America.
Telluride Regional Airport covers an area of 542 acres (219 ha) and has one runway designated 9/27 which measures 6,870 by 100 feet (2,094 by 30 m).[2] Located on a plateau, the airport's single runway literally dips slightly in the center. The runway can be a very challenging approach for pilots, particularly those operating commuter aircraft or business jets. During winter months, approximately 20% of the scheduled commuter airline flights end up having to divert to other nearby airports because of abruptly adverse landing conditions. Pilots must contend with high terrain exceeding 14,000 feet at all quadrants, as well as the airport's location on a plateau where 3 sides (including both ends of the runway) plunge about 1,000 ft to the San Miguel River below.......

Bogota is actually 2640 meters above sea level and on a plain region called Sabana de Bogotá.
sotavento June 30th, 2010, 01:03 PM Madeira airoport is the total worst available to land in a regular airway ... some people even call it "the poruguese aircraft carrier".
You got two options ... or you jump the island 1600m coming from one side or you aproach prom the same side , overrun the runway and pull the handbrake.

ImBoredNow July 10th, 2010, 04:52 PM ^^That's a pretty long runway though and landing is clear with no obstructions.
inhenriq July 11th, 2010, 05:23 AM Huh? There's definetely many airport in this thread that are not that dangerous at all. For example...La Paz? I know it's quite high, but it doesn't matter because the runway is long enough for heavy airplanes to take off with enough fuel for a short hop to Santa Cruz and then the rest of the world. It's not ideal of course, but there's the possibility, and thus, the height does not make more dangerous than others. Or what about Agatti airport in India. ok, there's water around it, what is the problem? La Guardia has water around it too (like sooooo many airports) but it's much more dangerous because of the runway patterns. Still, because of the many rules associated for operating in that airport, it's safe to say that it is not a dangerous airport, though a tricky one, and definetely not for everyone; but thousands of flights depart and arrive each day, with minimal incidents compared to those many flights.
Kai Tak is one of the best examples for dangerous airports though.

Khorog field in Tajikistan about 2000 m above sea. One of the most difficult approaches of the world. Runway is 1840 m long and 49 m wide. Only one side VFR.

http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/6480/01180786et6.jpg
La Carlota is not a airport anymore is now the biggest heliport of the world. I don't think Bogotá is a dangerous airport, it has a high elevation from the sea level, but no obstructions on a normal approach or a short runway.
jemurillo0705 July 15th, 2010, 10:48 PM ^^ SAN isn´t dangerous
malegi September 10th, 2010, 05:10 AM CGH isn't dangerous, there are something about 400 flights daily.

caelus December 15th, 2010, 12:52 PM ^^ This one above is hardly "dangerous", many airports around the world have runways facing the ocean on both ends, HKG is an example.

You remember correct. Scenes for "Tomorrrow Never Dies" were filmed there.

Saba's Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport
The danger arises from the airport's physical position. First of all, the runway at the airport is extremely short (approx. 1,300 ft or 396 m). It is flanked on one side by high hills, and on the other side and at both ends of the runway by cliffs dropping into the sea. This creates the possibility that an airplane could overshoot the runway during landing or takeoff and end up in the sea or on the cliffs.
