With the Djamel Eddine Khene Research and Development Center, Sonatrach, one of Africa’s largest companies, will focus on research and development in downstream petroleum and gas industries, attract the best scientific talent, and promote collaboration through scientific conferences and symposia.
A central landscaped courtyard is surrounded by four four-story “research clusters” – two on each side – and a cylindrical building containing an auditorium. Administrative programs are housed in a separate wing. Shielding the entire complex is a double-wall building envelope system consisting of a broadly overhanging horseshoe-shaped roof and lattice sunscreens that limit solar gain while retaining daylighting and views. The lattice sunscreens, patterned with designs inspired by traditional Algerian architecture, lend the facility a distinctive visual identity. An entry sequence defined by gardens and a dramatic umbrella canopy culminates in a breathtaking arrival hall.
Prevailing winds drawn through the courtyard and across water features provide evaporative cooling for a comfortable outdoor environment year-round. Operable windows provide daylight, fresh air, and a visual and auditory connection to the outdoors. Advanced modular laboratories readily adapt to the requirements of numerous scientific disciplines. Lounges and meeting rooms are designed as “hot zones” of interaction, promoting the cross-disciplinary collaboration so pervasive in cutting-edge science.
