Its original capacity was about 45,000. They proposed an increase of up to 60,000 but decided for 50,000. The stadium had artificial turf since 2005 but have removed it for natural grass. Also, they're adding 351 luxury boxes. The stadium was a bid for the 2015 Panamerican Games but they were given to Toronto.

The location isn't very good considering you can't expand anything. The express way next to the stadium gets jam packed during an event. And that express way is slow for an express way as it is at any given day. They plan to build an underground parking lot but it will be for about 600-900 vehicles and probably for the VIP and palco spectators. I think they should make a large scale parking lot for more people. Several people leave their cars parked around the neighborhoods. HOWEVER, on that express way, they are currently making a new transportation system. That should ease traffic for stadium events, especially association football.

The stadium is owned by a state-run institute and they plan to finish the stadium by 2011; just in time for the 2014 Qualifiers.

The project should have included tearing down the goal stands and replacing them with a new stand to match with the existing two-tier stands. And they also should have built the new luxury boxes all around the stadium, but that is only reserved for the west side and I hope space will be left on the east side for future expansion.

The current status is they're demolishing the stadium's old facade and vertical concrete pillars are being placed around it.

It's obvious duh, this was the stadium supposedly used for Lima 2015 Pan American Games had they won. They're putting in a track to ensure a capable stadium for any future Pan Ams bid. Too bad it isn't 60,000, that would have ensured it as an Olympic capable stadium for any future Olympic bid.

The renovation looks pretty good but it is a shame to lose the beautiful Art Deco exterior in the process. It just seems odd that if I am correctly interpreting that drawing earlier in the page, they'll keep the track but bring it down to only two lanes. What kind of national stadium has an athletics track with only two lanes?

Any more recent photos??? it is approaching the end of construction... it will be awesome if some of the Peruvians in Lima, take a few more pics before it gets ready to rock & roll.

PS: As far as I know, the stadium not only keeps the athletic track, but also houses some others sports in its interior. National Stadium Lima is owned by the Peruvian Sports Institute (It gets all this money from the Government) and they have to try to accommodate other sports in this arena.

mmm i guess... in Perú the Monumental Stadium (1251) has more suites than the Nacional (385). They are being sold in an auction, every suite has a base price. The most expensive suites until now are the one bought by Coca Cola, wich paid US$ 270.000.00. (Base price: US$180.000.00), Backus, US$ 250.000.00 (Base price: US$180.000.00) and Añaños Family - AJEPER (Kola Real) US$ 220.000.00 (Base price: US$ 188.000.00).

Peru re-opens the national stadium

Arturo Woodman , president of the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD) said that at the reopening of the National Stadium, the Peruvian team will play with the U-20 Spain. "The re-opening would be July, 24 from 6 pm. Unfortunately not the adult team, but the U-20 team that will face the equivalent of our country. It will be a big party, we will also have a large art show, "said Woodman in RPP news.

"We see the possibility of combination of U-20 play together with adult players of the Vicente del Bosque's team" concluded Arturo Woodman.

buena la remodelacion del estadio, pero los palcos parecen monoblocks de viviendas populares como el barrio de atras de la cancha de colon de santa fe en argentina.
igualmente es un estadio de primerisimo nivel, saludos

RAIN??????????????? What rain? Lima is not exactly a rainy city.

I like the fact that they haven't demolished the tower. It has always given the stadium that character I cannot describe.

Efectivamente es un gran area verde llamada el Circuito Magico del Agua... o algo así. A ello se debe la construcción de la torre sur, habrá un restaurante con vista a dicho parque.

Antes que todo, la firma de los led publicitarios en cancha son de Top Tech.

Me informan que se tiene planeado colocar en los 4 lados de la cancha, pero esta fijo que es oriente, norte y sur.

Sobre el césped detrás de arco en sur, quedará permanente.

Esta semana hay mucha limpieza, personal de seguridad, coreo grafos, militares haciendo piruetas, pruebas de video, etc.

I remember back when the stadium began to be upgraded that engineers tried to dig deeper the ground to make a total football stadium, but apparently they found the earth wasn't firm enough to hold a deeper excavation. So they decided to let it stay like that.

Not a big fan of the 6 lane running track, but the ground looks impressive and the visibility must be superb since the stands are pretty close to the pitch and the rake is steep enough.

They've done a good job of modernising what is essentially a very old structure. It looks very clean and modern on the outside, and a lot tidier inside too. Disregarding the fact they've only got 6 tracks, it also looks like they haven't added any cladding to the exterior parts nearest the tower. They look a bit open and exposed to me.
