I'm forced to wonder, was there an expansion of some sort?

I am not sure if there was any expansion on it, as I am not familiar with its history. But, I love this church, as a child I used to go on the eve of Easter, the place is majestic.

Maybe someone else can provide a definitive answer, but I don't think so. I've seen it from the inside and out and it looks like a very cohesive design with no obvious additions.

Well clearly it is different in the two pics.

Clearly in this pic something appears to be added on, the front and the setback are clearly different

I know this is an old topic but I have the answer. the B/W picture shows the rear while most of the other pics show the front. :)

^^That's the first thing I was going to say when I opened this up. I had never seen this thread before though.

Kebede,

That is what I though too at first. But the last image posted by Simfan disproves the 'front and back' theory!

Something is definitely up!

I think you are confused because the two bell towers and the dome rest halfway in the centre of the church ,which I presume is a perfect rectangular structure, therefore they create a visual effect that you are looking at the same face of the church with bits missing or bits added to it because two faces of the church look the same seen from the back or the front, apart from one side has the columns and the other side has a flat wall face,,, I thought the same too when I saw it first on this thread.
