since the other thread has been deleted, had to start a new one.
just a small article in todays tele was interesting.
For the first time in 90 years, Sydney;s top temps reached 20C on everyday in the january to April period with the coolest reaching just 21C on April5. The last time this occured was way back in 1914.Autumn temps have been up on normal in the majority of last 25 years.
todays weather in Sydney in one word - beautiful- 24 clear...

rainfall this month has been very low, just 0.8mm falling at Observatory Hill.

For the next few days, temps will be in the mid 20's and it will rain next week too.

I just read that this Autmun was the 2nd warmest on record. The warmest was recorded back in 1958.

If they excluded nighttime temps, this Autumn would of been the warmest on record with an average daily temp of 24 degrees.

You aussies have a beautiful weather. Over here it's been rainy and foggy for the whole weekend. Last week was just as hot as December. I don't know what's happening, we're supposed to have the coldest winter in the last years however the first days of the season were completely above normal.

Right now it's 22ºC (6pm) when it should be at least 15... :(

It's good you have rain though - you should be happy about that! :) We haven't had decent rain for quite a while, and today the next stage of water restrictions begin, due to the low water levels in the city dams.

I must say, it is great having beautiful, clear, sunny days in the mid-20's, but a few decent rainy days wouldn't hurt either!

I'm serious, the forecast is for my state, of course, and they do say it's gonna be cold because of the very mild summer we had this year (temps didn't even reach 40ºC!). They said it's gonna start getting cool by next week.

SEQ has the best storms in the country. Just ask the B.O.M. Due to the instability of warm surface air and the cold air in the troposphere. Or something like that. I was half asleep in that class. Why it gets hail stones the size of golf balls.

Thats true. The afternoon storms here are one of my favourite things about summer. Its still quite warm but its raining.. the smell of rain is in the air. U can walk out into it and be like ur taking a shower :P :D

On that note it been really cool in brisbane lately, not as hot as youd expect. Looks like we can expect a few warmer days now (34 max)

It has been quite cool for Brisbane especially for this time of the year. Out by the bay (eastern surburbs) it has been highs of about 23-24c and lows of about 14-16c. Things will definately start to really warm up though. I just hope we dont get those temps like we did in Feb this year, 2 solid days of 40c + temps.....

I can't believe Sydney is getting 42c - even Melbourne and Adelaide are hitting low 30s too.....

Snow would be fun, but then it wouldnt be such a novelty to me! Still, I'd like to live a bit closer to places with regular snow, which are currently about 6 hours drive away (except for the somewhat random and unusual snow falls that occur in the Blue Mountains on occasion, only 90mins away).

I would be very disappointed by mild summers! Summer should be toasty warm, but not too humid IMHO.

Chatswood is a biosphere with 5 shopping malls, many apartments and office towers all interlocked using sky bridges. So that means ya don't have to be outside udner the sun from shopping centre to home.

Doesn't matter if its 42 degrees. As long as air-con is working, Chatswood will survive.

The storm last night was nothing... the storm this afternoon destroyed one of my cars. The rear window imploded and the front window is close to shattering with cracks all over it. The dints look akin to bullet holes or craters in places - with no part of the car spared. My second car which was in another location has hail damage to the bonnet. Luckily the toughened glass roof (targa tops) on both survived.

I have pics of the hail which was litterally the size of small oranges and shaped like a hatak mothership ... jagged all over with points on them.

After the hail the rain started with road flooding and other water damage to cars and properties already shredded by the hail.

What an inconvenience!

Storms lash Sydney

Electrical storms sweeping NSW today brought down powerlines and trees, tore roofs off buildings and caused havoc on Sydney's roads.

Large hail up to five centimetres in diameter and heavy rain lashed the greater Sydney area and the NSW Central Coast this afternoon.

Trees were reported down around Sydney and in the city suburb of Gladesville, roofs were blown off two shops.

Areas from Richmond in the west to Sydney airport were hit by heavy rain and hail, a Bureau of Meteorology spokeswoman said.

NSW Fire Brigade Superintendent Ian Krimmer urged anyone requiring assistance with non life-threatening storm damage to call 132 500.

"Our Triple-0 network is being inundated, we do have over 100 incidents in the Sydney metropolitan area - power lines, trees - and we urge please to dial triple-0 for life-threatening (cases) only."

A Westpac Rescue Helicopter spokesman said three cars were underwater after a road under a railway bridge flooded in Sydney's south.

People were stranded on top of one car at Railway Parade, Bexley, the spokesman said.

Trains also were being delayed by up to 30 minutes on most lines because of the electrical storms, CityRail said in a statement.

At my place, it rained very heavily for around half an hour, not to mention how dark it was during the storm. I hadn't seen it that dark. Visiblity was very poor too!!!! There wasn't any flooding except for huge patches of water at a nearby reserve.

The lightening was spectular too. I saw it from outside. One bolt was enough to trigger a car alarm within my street

I have woken up and it feels very cool outside and it's nice to see that for a change.

My car got dented. It started raining golf balls as I was driving home from work. :(

My Cousin who lives at Yagoona (in your area) was saying there was hail at his place too. He was chatting on MSN to my brother and the computer simply went off. Did the power go off within the area as well???

That's the sort of storm I miss seeing when I am living overseas....nonetheless, am not too happy with the damage, and we were without power for the night, and without phones til this morning apparently.

I wished I had my camera to catch the view from work as the storm was coming in at 3pm or so, sky went dark, areas in the distance disappeared, lightning struck surrounding buildings, power went off and of course there was the wind and rain. When it cleared up of course we were left with the stories in the news. Amazingly with the warm weather just after the storm, temps dropped off dramatically as night fell. Its due to the meridional setup we have atm. There is a strong blocking high in the Tasman, which is directing N to NW winds down across a lot of southern areas. Been a hot April nationwide pretty much.

Will only cool down when the blocking pattern breaks down allowing a zonal west to east flow with more cold fronts. I'd say mid May is when that should start to occur.

BTW, any of u folk know of www.weatherzone.com.au ? Excellent site for weather enthusiasts with a great forum.

And i think last year's winter, or at least one of the winter months was the warmest on record.... Everytime i go back to Sydney in winter i'm amazed at how warm and sunny it is constantly, not the winters I remember going to school in freezing winds and rain.

Today was warm - 28 degrees in the CBD, 8 above average  I noticed alot of schoolkids at Hurstville heading off on the train to Cronulla to get a dip.

We've already had a couple of days with 26 degree readings such as Sept 10 and August 31 (It hit the max at 1030am that day)

Sydney really turned on the good weather for the weekend. I was out all Sunday night until 10am and it was really nice to be able to walk from place to place without freezing your tits off. At sunrise on Monday morning it was about 20c and very plesant - especially with the morning sun on Sydney Tower.

Yesterday was the hottest of this spring/summer so far.

I know this might sound a little odd, but have people noticed that their hearing changes in the heat? ACtually, i am sure it is not our hearing but sound travels differently in warmer air. It's not a huge difference but it is noticeable. Everything has a very slightly different ring to it. We get used to it by mid summer but it is particularly noticeable on days like yesterday when it is the hottest day in six months by almost 10 degrees.

And before any smart arse tries to accuse me otherwise - i am not under the influence of any substance (except my overly heavy lunch). I'm serious! :)

Anyone else know what i am talking about?

You'll often find that on Summer afternoons, radio waves tend to carry longer distances because the air is warmer. It has been known that you can sometimes pick up FM stations from Auckland along the east coast of Australia some summer arvos. I know Im not actually talking about sound as you were, but it sought of along the same lines. :)

It's been a funny week 34 one day, 21 the next and then 30 the next day. Thats part of Spring here in Sydney. It cannot just make up its mind from one day to the next.

I heard it was very windy last night and it caused a bit of damage too along the coast. The southern suburbs escaped it pretty much. a bit breezy though today.

Humidity / air moisture make the sound travel. From where I live here in Brisbane when its dry I can't hear much at all, when its humid I can hear the planes land and take off at BNE and the City Hall chimes very clearly.

I have never felt anything like this... There wasn't much mosquito plague last year...so this is it.

Maybe it goes in rotation. Xmas beetle --> Mosquito --> Flies.

Insect repellant companies will be laughing. People hitting their sunglasses and slapping their face to fend off these crap.

Tell me about it - what happened to sunny Sydney. Sunday Morning I froze walking back from The Shift in the rain and wind. This morning (Monday) was actually colder and rainier.

Had a lovely evening Saturday night though watching the storm roll in while at a party in an apartment in St Margrets. The view over the harbour, the CBD and out to the eastern suburbs was fantastic and I saw many lightning strikes hit tall buildings!!

Yeah feeling a little homesick, for the last two years I've gone back to Syd for November/December, but this year not. Your weather is really ridiculous, saw and heard about the cold weather, here was just as ridiculous, houses without power for three days, trees over everywhere and snow up to 1.5 metres deep in some places and people sleeping on freeways with their cars covered in snow. Really wasn't normal.

I certainly know what it's like walking home in the morning in summer, the weather the night before was so hot and humid, but by morning you really freeze your ass off!

We better check our sewage systems that after years of under-par rain it won't be clogged with trash, everytime there were strong rains even in the city there would be big patches of floods.

funny...

just 150km from Sydney its 13degC tonight while I can't get to sleep due to the humid hot night. yes oh' please bring back Winter. There's something beautiful about wrapping up at night and slowly heating up as oppose to going to sleep and slowly sweating feeling hotter. :sleepy:

It got to 37 but it began cooling down by lunchtime especially in the southern suburbs. At 4pm it was 24 at Sutherland and Mascot and still in the mid 30's across the rest of the city.

Saturday night was quite cool to my surprise.

It will be a hot week 37 on Wednesday and 35 for New Years Eve and New Years Day :)

Also I noticed on the Central Coast during my recent trip how it can vary by a few degrees although its in a coastal area. I remember on one day It was 36 up at The Entrance (Going off the Norah Head reading for that day) while down the coast in Sydney it was 31. Seabreezes were non existant.
