Byblos is the international name for this city. It comes from the Greek word for "paper", as the Greeks believed that the Egyptian papyrus, sold to them by the Phoenicians, came from there (the Phoenicians, of course, never let the Greeks know about the source of this good). In Lebanon, it is named Jbeil, the same name the first settlers and the Phoenicians used.
Byblos is considered one of the oldest continuously habitated cities in the world. On its archaeological site, which is being continuously unearthed, one can see vestiges from Pre-history, Phoenician times, Persian times, Roman times, Arab times, Crusader times.
The most famous attractions of this city are the archaeological site, with a roman amphitheater, a Crusader's castle (which houses a museum with artifacts from Byblos), a Roman necropolis and columns, vestiges of phoenician dwellings. Surrounding the site, there is a Crusader's church, a fossile museum, and the old city, with its charming souks and ever-flowered trees, and the port, which is the same the Phoenicians used.
On the summer, the city hosts the Byblos international Festival, with its stage set up between the Mediterranean and the Crusader's castle.
